Roush responds to the stir generated by his bickering drivers

Several days ago, the apparently long-simmering feud between Roush drivers Carl Edwards and Matt Kenseth came to a public boil.

In news reports of the incident, Edwards seemed to point a finger at the Roush organization for their woes, unfavourably comparing their situation to what exists at happy camper teams like Hendrick Motorsports.

Carl Edwards: "Hendrick Motorsports, and those people that we compete against do a better job of having team spirit than we've done lately at Roush Fenway."

and...

"I think that, obviously, leadership from somewhere is needed, but I think most importantly it comes from within. You know, Mark Martin was very good at communicating when he wasn't happy with something."

Perhaps feeling the heat, today Jack Roush offered his thoughts on the situation. (... with files from Ford)

Jack Roush, car owner of five Ford Racing Fusions, addressed the incident between Carl Edwards and Matt Kenseth in the garage area at Atlanta Motor Speedway on Friday before practice.

JACK ROUSH, Car Owner – Roush Fenway Ford Fusions – WHAT STEPS HAVE YOU TAKEN THIS WEEK AS FAR AS DEALING WITH THE INCIDENT BETWEEN CARL AND MATT?  "I've been engaged all week trying to understand what the reasons were and what the frustration was behind the conflict between Carl and Matt, and I think we have the measure of it.  Certainly, Carl realizes that he wasn't a friend to Matt and Matt, I think, is anxious to have Carl get some relief from the dilemma he finds himself in.  We're working our way through the aftermath of the conflict that was regrettable, and I think in the future, in a scenario where there will be conflict and differences of opinion, that we'll be able to avoid that confrontation."

THERE HAS BEEN A LOT OF TALK THIS WEEK ABOUT HOW RICK HENDRICK COMES ON THE RADIO TO TALK TO HIS DRIVERS AND MAYBE CALM THEM DOWN.  WILL YOU BECOME MORE ACTIVE IN THAT REGARD WHEN YOUR GUYS ARE ON TRACK?  "Very seldom do I feel the need to become engaged with the running of the race from a crew chief and a driver point of view.  In a very, very rare circumstance I'll clarify something that's obvious to me for all to hear, but not very often.  I think by maintaining a pretty much hands-off policy toward the development of the race is what NASCAR looks for.  I think it's in the interest of fair play as seen by the fans, and I don't see a greater participation myself to try to stave off a conflict or a dispute that could potentially occur.  This is an overtly aggressive, competitive, potentially combative circumstance that occurs between all the drivers on the race track.  I want that from my drivers and their sponsors so everybody recognizes that the ability of the car and the judgment of the crew chief will manifest itself for all of our activities, for all of our different programs in the result on the race track.  There may be a dispute over space from time to time among drivers, but in the case between Matt and Carl it wasn't just what happened at that race at Martinsville, it was the fact that there had been some conflicts and some hard feelings that had smoldered for some period of time.  By having discussion and thinking about the things that are in the common best interest for their careers, I'm sure that reason will prevail going forward."

Targa Newfoundland Veterans Team up to Tackle Tall Pines Rally

For Immediate Release - October 24, 2007 Veteran Targa NewFoundland driver and Overall winner of the 2006 event, Glen Clarke is teaming up with expert rally co-driver and Targa veteran, Ray Felice in an Open Class Subaru to compete in the 2007 Rally of the Tall Pines

Clarke, who owns and operates Open Road Motorsports recently took a rally driving course at Tim O’Neil’s Rally School in New Hampshire in preparation for his first rally. In addition to competing in Targa Newfoundland Glen has competed at many different tracks all over the world including, Pikes Peak, Watkins Glen, and Birmingham in the UK. He is also a Porsche Club PCA National Instructor.

A key to achieving success in any undertaking is effective team work. “My Targa experience has taught me that the most important team member is the co-driver. The co-driver is the team's quarterback and is essential for managing the driver's pace. Ray Felice is one of the more experienced and talented co-drivers in the business. When I learned that Ray was available for Tall Pines, I knew that he would be the right person to help develop our team and help us learn to compete in a safe and competitive manner” says Glen

Glen’s driving career started in the early 90's with karts, Porsches and formulacars. After lots of fun and reasonable success on the track, he turned his attention to adventure races such as the Cannonball One Lap of America and Targa Newfoundland. “Competing at Targa raised my interest in stage rally. Stage rally offers the new challenge of mastering the driving, navigation and team work required to be successful“

Ray says, “It will be different riding with someone other than my usual driver, Peter Reilly, but I am looking forward to it. I have known Glen since 2003 and have always got along well with him. He is a very talented driver who is always focused on his job behind the wheel. “

“We have four goals for the event: don’t damage the car (it’s borrowed), finish the event, learn from it and have some fun! “ We will be running Hankook Tire tires at the event and that will go a long way in helping us with our goals!

When asked why The Tall Pines Rally for the first event Glen replied, “Tall Pines is a sentimental choice for my first rally as I grew up in Wilberforce Ontario not far from Bancroft. As a kid I can remember standing at the end of our driveway watching the cars race by. At that time I never thought I would have the opportunity to take part. This year, another dream comes true!”

We would like to thank ACP for the loan of the car and Hankook Tires for the tire support.

The filming of the series for TV broadcasting is provided by ATV Productions. Information on the Canadian Rally Championship and the various Canadian rally competitions is available at Canadian Association of Rallysport web site below.

Raceline Radio Network Newsletter - Oct. 25, 2007

From Erik Tomas.... Raceline Radio

Random thoughts, some might actually have something to do with racing automobiles...

A shame Lewis Hamilton couldn't dispatch an F-1 World Driving Championship. He would have been the first rookie in history to pull off the feat. I think nerves got the better of the 22 year old and he stumbled with a panicky start in the season closer at Brazil. I bet you his feet were shaking on the pedals. His McLaren then slowed with bubbly hydraulics and a sticky gearbox. He lost drive for a moment, and he simply dropped too far back, 7th and a lap down.

Formula One tried their best to further pollute their season with the cold-fuel inquiry, that for a few hours after the race, questioned whether some BMW and Williams cars would be excluded from the finishing order, bumping Hamilton to 4th, good enough for the title.

You chill the fuel, it takes out some oxygen molecules making it denser, creating a horsepower boost. But F-1 decided it was no big deal, and the finish stood. Kimi wins the crown by 1 point over Hamilton. The pro-Hamilton British press are crying into their fish and chips.

Lewis' interview on Raceline Radio was a definite season hi-lite. He's a great kid and a wonderful talent. He'll have his day no doubt. I admit I was pulling for him to win the F-1 crown, but Kimi Raikkonen wins that. Kimi is a nice guy but he's as out-going as melted ice. He managed to crack a slight smile on the podium in Brazil. Kimi is not an exciting personality, but a fast and precise driver and full measure for it. He's an unlikely champ, ending an interesting but turbulent F-1 season.

Can someone please explain to me why CTV's "Corner Gas" is considered funny? And you would think the Network has another "I Love Lucy" on their hands. They promote "Corner Gas" in every single stop set in their evening programming. Folks, if you insist on pulverizing us with incessant promos, at least have the decency to produce at least 2 versions of it so we're not seeing the SAME damn promo every commercial break.

The mandate of this show is to spotlight Canadian driving talent and success. 2007 was a banner year for Canucks in DIRT Modified Racing. The 358 Division was commanded by Canadians, first and second in final points with St. Edmond Quebec's Mario Clair edging Kingston Ontario's Danny O'Brien for the title. Close to 70% of the cars in the pits at Super DIRT Week Syracuse were Canadian creations from the Bicknell shop in St. Catharines Ontario. We build 'em and drive 'em to victory lane. That works.

The phone rang in the Raceline office at 3 AM Sunday morning. I had set the alarm, so I was up. Sort of. It was Sebastien Bourdais after he clinched his 4th ChampCar World Series championship in a row. He chided me for complaining about the early hour. We have developed that kind of relationship. Sabby talked about his never-say-die Newman-Haas/Lanigan team again, and how time after time, recovered from the usual rash of racing set-backs to keep him in the fight.

The Flying Frenchman scored his 30th career win in Australia to lock down his 4th straight ChampCar title. That breaks Ted Horn's record of 3 set just after the close of World War II. How rare is 4 championships in a row? It's never happened in NASCAR or the NFL, and hasn't happened in 20 years in The NHL or Major League Baseball. And the truly amazing thing? This all happens in just his 5th year in the series. Paul Tracy has one title over 17 years of service. Bourdais finally gets that F-1 break, heading to Torro Rosso and Gerhard Berger's tutelage next year.

Sea-bass has become more Americanized than he thinks. While he allowed wife Claire is looking forward to moving closer to her family in France, Sebastien is more concerned about all the accumulated junk in their garage at their Florida place. Sabby was incredibly co-operative with us. I hope we can stay in touch as he disappears into the isolation of Formula One's infamous unavailability for media and fans.

Heck, I'd even help Bourdais clean out his garage if I thought it would score brownie points.

ICAR On-Track at Mirabel for 2008

MONTREAL-MIRABEL, QC - The International Center of Advanced Racing (ICAR) hosted a distinguished group of VIP's and media Wednesday as plans for the company's on-going development and construction of a state-of-the-art motorsport complex were unveiled on-site near the Montreal-Mirabel International Airport terminal.

Ahead of its planned opening in Spring 2008, ICAR outlined its mission to redefine motorsport in Québec with its revitalization of the former airport facility.  With work having already started on what will be one of the most prestigious private motorsport complexes in Canada, including a permanent 3.8km road course, Wednesday's guests were treated to an overview of ICAR's plans for the site.

With an impressive multi-configuration track layout, where advanced safety features will be showcased, ICAR hopes that the site will serve as an unrivalled platform for automotive manufacturers and dealers to present their products while attracting the corporate sector as an event venue.

The ICAR complex will also serve as a key motorsport facility for professionals and amateurs alike.  Attracted by the ultra-modern design of the circuit, meeting approved FIA design standards, and with virtually the entire track visible from a single viewing point, the motorsport community will have at its disposal a cutting-edge home situated just 20-minutes drive from Montreal.

The new ICAR Club will allow members to have exclusive track time as well as VIP access to events held on-site with full use of the restaurant and lounge situated in the complex's stunning pavilion.

In addition, the site will host the ICAR Academy, helping to ensure the future of motorsport by initiating a trainee and sport-study program for young drivers while offering advanced driving courses.  The Mirabel base will also serve as the official home and testing facility for the ICAR Star Mazda racing team and the ICAR Karting team - the latter making full use of the brand-new kart track located on-site.

"I'm thrilled to have officially introduced ICAR's plans for the Mirabel complex and I'm delighted with the progress we've already made here," commented ICAR Chief Executive Officer, Frédéric Senay.  "We're on-schedule to open in Spring next year and put simply we'll be offering ICAR's users a unique facility in the region.  From day one we've wanted to redefine what we could offer the automotive and motorsport industries and I believe we're on-track to meet that objective."

Jean Teasdale, Vice President of Cargo and Industrial Development for Aéroports de Montréal shares Frédéric Senay's enthusiasm for the ICAR project.  He commented, "ICAR's strategy for the revitalization of the Montreal-Mirabel Airport complex shares our vision for the development of the site and we couldn't be more excited to have found partners with such a dynamic, class-leading business model.  I look forward to returning in 2008 to witness the dream become a reality here at Mirabel."

Wednesday's official introduction was capped with a one-lap display race comprised of some of the vehicles that will feature in ICAR's plans for the site, with Mr. Hubert Meilleur, Mayor of Mirabel, enjoying the honour of waving the checkered flag.

Rick at the Races.... Rick Young's perspective on last weekend's DIRTcar Eastern States Weekend

By Rick Young

During the course of the year, rain-outs have caused me a few disappointments , but the big down pour that hit most of the North East last Friday did me a great favor.

One big event I look forward to each year is the Eastern States Weekend at the Orange County Fair Speedway at Middletown NY. It's the curtain closer of the SUPER DIRTCAR SERIES for all the divisions within the the organization. It's an event that has been going for 46 years and I first heard about it back in the 70's when I lived in the UK.

Let me digress for a moment... In the late 70's , following an article I had printed in Petersen Publishing's HOT ROD MAGAZINE concerning British stock car racing, I received regular correspondence from North American Modified fans. One of them was a guy called Bill Goodrich of Fort Montgomery NY who was a regular at the Orange County Fair Speedway located at Middletown, not far from New York City . He told me all about the Eastern States Weekend as well as mentioning a top driver called Buzzie Reutimann and some young kid called Brett Hearn who was starting to make a name for himself. Over the years I lost contact with Bill, and often wonder if he still attends the races. If any of my NY readers know of his whereabouts and could put me back in touch, it would be great.

After taking the previous weekend off ( from racing) , to recover from SUPER DIRT WEEK (All the comings and goings of this big event certainly take it out of you ) I was all set for the six hour drive down to Middletown. It's difficult to take time off work at the moment, so the logistics have to be well planned. The 'Eastern States' is a three day event starting on Friday, so on most occasions, I've ended up missing the opening night. My car was packed Thursday night so I'd be ready to head South straight from work on Friday. I'm in the trucking industry and you are never 100% sure when you'll get finished. It turned out to be a really hectic day and I was still driving my truck around Montreal at 7-00pm at night. I eventually got back to my terminal in Cornwall Ontario , and after ending my shift at 9-00pm , I was soon heading South in the pouring rain. Although the forecast for the rest of the weekend was for sunny weather, I was selfishly hoping it would be raining in Middletown on Friday too, which would mean a postponement of the races to Saturday. After traveling down Interstate 87 and over the Adirondack Mountains , I reached a favorite truck stop of mine at exit 16 just north of Saratoga at around 1-00am. The seats were folded down on my Chevy and I slept until about 6-00am. After a wash and scrub, I was back on the road and arrived in Middletown at 9-00am in time for Breakfast. Sure enough, on arrival at the track I discovered Friday nights show had been washed out and with sunshine predicted for the rest of the weekend, the make up events were planned for Saturday morning. Just as I'd hoped ! 'Mother Nature' was kind to me this time !

As usual there was a big crowd assembled for DIRT racings last big event of the year and with the weather now warm and sunny the stage was set for some great racing. With a large turnout of cars in all divisions there were a lot of qualifying races to get through before the days headline 100 lap SUPER DIRTCAR SERIES race for 358 DIRT Modifieds could take place. I set myself up on the infield by turn three and four with camera in hand waiting for the action. It was a sign of things to come when a big wreck occurred involving Kenny Stafford # 60 and Joe Puzzella # 82P right in front of me. This was just the first of many big crashes that occurred over the weekend.

There were a lot of my buddies in attendance, including Cornwall Motor Speedway promotor Ron Morin, so for the start of the 100 lap Mod race I joined him in the pace truck. I can now say I've done a couple of laps of the OCFS !

This race, which was just one of many over the weekend was probably one of the less interesting, with Brett Hearn # 4 ( yes, that young guy I'd heard about from the 1970's) taking the lead from Pat Ward # 42P on lap 8 and staying there unchallenged to the checkers.

Sharing the glory in Victory Lane was Mario Clair # 22 of St Edmund , Quebec, the newly crowned 358 MR DIRT SUPER DIRTCAR Series Champion. I guess for this year he will be called "Monseiur DIRT"

It was now around supper time , so I took off into town to one of the usual restaurants I frequent. This turned out to be a wrong move. After supper I went into the nearby Walmart Photo Department to print off some of my afternoon pictures, which included the 'wreck' shot of Stafford and Puzzella. I was just about to leave Walmart when I had that sudden 'urge' to run to the nearest washroom ( toilet) . For the next twenty minutes or so I was committed to a self-imposed 'solitary confinement' until I felt safe to emerge. I guess something I ate for supper disagreed with me !

I then returned to the track and got my bed made up ( folded the seats down in my Chevy once more) next to my buddies RV in the camping area before checking out the evenings DIRT Sportsman races. At the same time as these were going on , there's was also a lot of socializing to be done at the "31st LAP" . This is the name given to the track bar located behind the main stand, where each year on the Saturday night of the ESTERN STATES WEEKEND they hold a "New Years Eve" Party complete with all the streamers , garlands, hats and hooters etc. It's always a lot of fun, so I split my time between watching the Sportsman and 'partying'. I saw Mike Ruggiero # 4R win the Sportsman SUPER DIRTCAR race then retired to the bar to see the 'New Year' in.

I awoke on Sunday morning to yet another warm and sunny day, and after breakfast ( at a different restaurant ! ) I was ready for more racing action. First of all it was the on-track PIT PARTY for fans to meet the drivers. I chatted briefly to former SUPER DIRTCAR SERIES champion Gary Tomkins who told me a little bit about his forthcoming racing tour to Australia . Apparently an 'Aussie' driver came over and bought one of his old cars and shipped it back home. Following this, Gary has been offered the chance to drive it at a few selected events 'down under' in November.

Top of the bill on Sunday was the 200 lap Eastern States race for big Block Modifieds with a DIRT Pro Stocks Series race as supporting act.

Just like Syracuse, two weeks previous, there were a lot of my local drivers taking part in this division , and I chatted to , Roch Aubin # 4R of Alexandria, Ontario in the pits. It was his first time there so I warned him to stay away from the wall. The Pro Stocks are noted for providing plenty of wrecks and today was no exception. Denny Gauvreau # 72 another of my local drivers was involved in the second nasty wreck of the weekend when he flipped on to the roof of Sean Corr # 8 demolishing both cars. There was more carnage in their 25 lap feature ( won by Eric Marin # 214) with a total of 14 cautions ( it felt like 114 ! ) . Roch kept away from the wall, survived any major wrecks and came in a creditable ninth position.

The Pro Stocks stoppages caused things to run late but eventually it was time for the big race for the DIRT MODS. Once again I stationed myself on turn 3 and 4 hoping to be close to the action. I wasn't to be disappointed !

Things looked all set for another Brett Hearn victory (this time driving his # 20 car) so I was in the process of 'panning' a decent action shot of him when all hell let loose, just behind him. As I turned, I saw the rear end of Frank Cozze's # 44 car smashing through the outer advertising boards, taking down an electricity pole with him, just as Rusty Smith # R2 rolled into the wall behind him. It looked horrific as Smiths car sat on it's side smoking with the throttle jammed wide open. The red flags were soon out and thankfully both drivers were OK, but it was one of the scariest looking incidents I've seen in all my years of racing. Emergency crews and track staff worked well and it wasn't long before racing resumed. Hearn who had led most of the early laps continued leading until Billy Decker # 91 got by on lap 86 with local hero Jeff Heotzler # 66 not far behind . Decker looked uncatchable until lap 193 when he ran out of gas. This handed the lead top Hoetzler who went on to take the flag. After many years of trying, the 2007 OCFS track champion, Jeff Hoetzler of Wallkill NY , close to Middletown finally won the big one.

With everything running later than expected, and with a six hour drive ahead of me, I skipped the Victory Lane photo session and was out of the gate as quickly as I could. With the minimum of stops, I was back home at 12-30 and ready to go back to work on Monday morning for a rest !

This year's Eastern States will be very memorable, not only for the excitement on the track but for the warm and sunny weather. I never dreamed that at my last race meeting of the year I'd be wearing shorts and T shirt.

THANKS to my photographer buddy , Boris Rudzinski for allowing me to use his Victory Lane shot of EASTERN STATES 200 winner Jeff Hoetzler

That's right, this past weekend brought my 2007 RICK @ the RACES campaign to an end. With nothing else planned until the ice racing starts in January this will be the last report until then. Hopefully, it will give me a chance to get back 'on track' with my RICK @ the RACES (RETRO REPORTS) which got sidelined while things got busy. The last one I did brought us up to the latter part of 1979 and with any luck, I'll have the final chapter for that year out to you before long.

ESS: Champion Alain Bergeron to be honoured at banquet

Saint-Pie, QC … Despite a 2007 season marked by several bad lucks, Alain Bergeron never gave up and he will be part of the honored drivers at the annual ESS Banquet of the 'Empire Super Sprints' that will take place November 10th at Syracuse NY.  After two important accidents at the beginning of the season in the nights # 1 and 3, the Saint-Pie QC driver was way far in the series points standing but his tenacity allowed him to finish the season in fifth place in the series championship and to finish first in the DASH series.  A long season that had begun last January while the 2006 champion had succeeded qualifying himself for the A-Main in the big final night at the WinterNationals at East Bay, Florida.  Altogether, Bergeron will have accumulated 8 wins in heat races and 12 Top10 in 21 ESS programs.

'To be able to complete a season so loaded would not have been possible without the constant support of my team and my sponsors.' to note Alain Bergeron.  Those sponsors are Coffrage Daniel Lampron, Domaine de L'Érable, Castrol, DMI, Tufoil, Permatex, Metaux A.D. ALMS: Canada's Ron Fellows named most popular for fourth straight year

(BOWMANVILLE, ON - OCTOBER 24, 2007)  The fans have spoken, and for the fourth year in a row Ron Fellows is the Most Popular Driver of the prestigious American Le Mans Series. The award is yet another special honour the 48 year-old Mississauga, Ontario native and Corvette Racing driver has collected recently. Earlier this year, General Motors announced a limited edition Corvette named after him- the Ron Fellows Z06 Corvette- and he also received a custom designed guitar from PRS Guitars.

The Most Popular Driver Award was one of two honours presented to Fellows at the annual season-ending banquet following the Monterey Sports Car Championships in California. Fellows also took home a specially commissioned Corvette painting, awarded by American Le Mans Series founder Dr. Don Panoz in recognition of the efforts Fellows and his wife Lynda made at the Le Petit Elegance charity fundraiser at Petit Le Mans earlier this month. Fellows wore a specially designed pink race helmet that he signed and was auctioned off after the race with the proceeds going to Emory University School of Medicine's Department of Surgery and its Program for Breast Cancer Research, based in Atlanta.

Fellows has competed at every American Le Mans Series race at Mosport (his home track) since 2000. In 2008, the American Le Mans Series returns for their only Canadian event as part of the Mobil 1 presents the Grand Prix of Mosport, August, 21-24.

Jacques Villeneuve: Atlanta Truck Preview

Race/Date: EasyCare Vehicle Service Contracts 200 - Oct. 27, 2007 (NCTS)
Location: Atlanta Motor Speedway - Atlanta, Ga.

NOTES:

This week's race will be Jacques Villeneuve's fourth NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series start in 2007.  He did not finish the last two races due to other drivers' accidents, so he is ready for a good finish.

- Atlanta is another new track to Villeneuve.  He has tested other 1.5-mile ovals, including Chicagoland Speedway, the track at which he had his first NASCAR test.

- A huge ice hockey fan, Villeneuve will not be sneaking away from the track Saturday night to see the Atlanta Thrashers – they are playing in Chicago.  While he was based in Switzerland during his Formula 1 career, Villeneuve started his own hockey team, The Monks of Bretaye.

- "Villeneuve" means "new town" in English…  "Newtown" is the name of Villeneuve's bar/restaurant, located on Crescent Street in the heart of Montreal's social scene.  The venue is under pressure to start hosting NASCAR-themed evenings, enabling fans to watch 'JV' in action on the big screen.  Watch this space for more details.

- Buckle up…  Suggestions that the hand driers in the Newtown washrooms are the most powerful in the world are unconfirmed, but if you find yourself in there, consider yourself warned!

- "Old friends" is how some would describe Remus and Sonax –European-based sponsors of Villeneuve's No. 27 Toyota Tundra Truck.  Remus first sponsored the Canadian in the F1 series in 2001.  Sonax has been with Villeneuve even longer – since 1996.

- Hamilton matches Villeneuve…  On Sunday, British F1 rookie Lewis Hamilton narrowly missed the F1 driver's championship.  In 1996, Villeneuve also finished second in the drivers' standings in his first attempt.  Coincidentally, both drivers each won four Grand Prix in their debut season.

- Music to your ears…  Villeneuve released his first musical album "Private Paradise" earlier this year.  Europe's leading motorsports memorabilia site is now selling it, as fan interest reaches new highs.

- NASCAR fans will have to wait until the 2008 season before they can buy JV/27 merchandise.  Expect to find some very unique items when the range hits the shelves.

Jacques Villeneuve on Atlanta Motor Speedway:

"It's a fast track, so it'll be very different than Martinsville!  Although this season is about gaining experience, I'm a racer, so a good result would be a bonus.  I'll be out to cover as much mileage as possible, to learn as much as I can, and to keep building for 2008.  Right now, BDR has a strong package, and I'll hopefully get to run some laps with Mike [Skinner, teammate] and Johnny [Benson, teammate].  If I can do that, I'm sure we can do well."

MOTO-ST: GO BIG RACING’S 8-HOUR RUN ENDS IN HEARTBREAK

(Daytona, FL) - For seven hours and fifty-three minutes of the eight hours finale of the SunTrust Moto-ST Endurance Series, Go Big Racing could not have asked for a better run.  Ross Millson (Hamilton, ON), Karl Daigle (Granby, PQ), and Paul Glenn (Keene, ON) overcame two pit stop penalties to drive their Summit Gearworks/Ready Fastener Suzuki powered SV650 to the front of the ST Class pack and were sitting in first place at historic Daytona International Speedway when disaster struck.

With seven minutes remaining in the race, Go Big Racing saw their shot at winning their first SunTrust Moto-ST Endurance Series race fall short as the bike suffered what the team believed was an electrical related failure and was forced to retire with a third place finish.

At this point, we are not sure what went wrong with the bike, commented Millson moments after learning that they were out of the race the most important thing is that Karl is fine and we were still able to finish on the podium for our hardworking crew and for our sponsors.

An early pit stop penalty saw the Go Big Racing Suzuki drop to as low as sixth in the ST Class, but some determined racing by all three team members allowed the team slowly work their way back to the front of the pack where they waged a lengthy battle with the #87 Speedworks entry.

Buoyed by the support of Phil and Rose Kurucz (and family) of Summit Gearworks and Mike and Imma Rice of Infinet Designs, all of whom made the trip to Daytona to support the team, and the Ready Fastener and AVAcore Technologies - CoreControl teams back in Canada and Michigan respectively, Go Big Racing was able to eventually use great racing and pit stop strategy to carve out almost a full lap lead on the #87 entry before the technical issues arose.

It was great to be able to be here in Daytona to see Go Big Racing in action and to see how much heart they have as a team, said Summit Gearworks President, Phil Kurucz We are extremely proud of these remarkable racers and crew!

The third place finish in Daytona allowed Go Big Racing to finish the inaugural season in second place in the ST Class championship point standings.

Overall we are very happy with the results this season, commented Glenn We would like to thank all of our sponsors for their support, which allowed us to run in this new series and gain valuable experience that we can take forward.  We also once again have to thank our crew for their tireless effort each week.  We would not be able to run up front in an eight hour race without the hard work of Mark Millson, Scott Laidman, Blaine Groves and Angie and Mike Hallman.

Speed TV will broadcast of all 6 rounds of the SunTrust MOTO-ST Endurance Series with The 8-hour finale from Daytona airing January 8, 2008. Visit www.speedtv.com for complete broadcast details.

Go Big Racing now heads into the off-season after a very successful year that saw Paul Glenn win the 2007 International Motorcycle Supershow Amateur 600 Canadian Championship and Ross Millson finish his rookie season in the Parts Canada Superbike Championship in 3rd in the HJC Rookie of the Year standing.  Throughout the winter, you can catch up with Go Big Racing at the International Motorcycle Supershow and the Toronto Motorcycle Show where they will be displaying their bikes and signing autographs.

ACTion News - Wednesday, October 24, 2007
By Justin St. Louis

Joey Becker had a good season in the American-Canadian Tour (ACT) Late Model division at Thunder Road, maybe his best one yet.

"I'd say it was," he said.  "It sort of depends on how you look at the numbers, though.  I almost think we ran better last year, but we ended up better this year.  It was weird how it worked out."

A month shy of his 34th birthday, Becker is paving the way for Thunder Road's "new breed" of Late Model talent.  Having just completed his fifth season steering the familiar #16 Richard Green Trucking Fords out of the far northern reaches of Vermont's Franklin County, he finished a surprising third in the "King of the Road" championship race at Thunder Road, and has placed himself among the elite Late Model title contenders.  In fact, the effort was so surprising it went virtually unnoticed.

"Some of the newspapers and radio stations first reported that Jamie Fisher had finished third in points, and I think it's because they didn't even consider me to be a contender (entering the Thunder Road finale)," Becker laughed.  "Jamie and Dave (Pembroke – the eventual champion) and (Cris) Michaud were in such a tight battle, the media sort of forgot about me.  That's okay, that means there's no pressure on us.  That's how I like it, that's how my crew guys like it.  We just show up and do our job, and then people say 'Where the heck did you come from?' when it's all over."

The numbers Becker spoke of initially were impressive: An opening-day victory at the Casella Mother's Day event in May highlighted the year's eight top-ten finishes and three top-fives in 14 starts, and a third-place showing in points was a career best.  But the Jeffersonville, VT racer was right, the statistics were a little strange.  In the same number of events in 2006, Becker posted two more finishes in both the top-five and top-ten, but still ranked only fifth overall.

"I think the difference is that nobody had that outstanding, record-setting year this season," Becker philosophized.

And again, he's right: Dave Whitcomb, with just six top-fives, led all drivers in the Late Model class at Thunder Road, and finished seventh in points.  Pembroke's title-winning season saw only five top-fives, as did Michaud's runner-up campaign.  Marcel Gravel and Kip Stockwell also earned five.  By comparison, 2006 "King of the Road" Chad Wheeler had a whopping nine top-fives, as did Michaud the year before that.  In 2004, Michaud had an even-better 10.

"It's tough to win races when everyone is so good all of the time," said Becker.  "Look at the cars that didn't qualify for the Milk Bowl this year, that should tell you how hard it is to be successful at this level."  Included on the list of DNQs at the Chittenden Milk Bowl were Trampas Demers and John Donahue – winners of the two most recent events at Thunder Road prior to the Milk Bowl.

So, as far under the radar as he has been, how does Becker feel his team will stack up against the "headliners" in 2008?

"We're coming out fighting for the championship from day one," he said.  Given his quiet success throughout the past two seasons – say nothing of his sometimes dominant victories in the NAPA Tiger Sportsman division years ago – it seems like Becker knows how to do just that.

Unfortunately, last week's deadline prevented us from touching on the big news regarding the True Value Modified Racing Series event at Thunder Road's Mekkelsen RV Memorial Day Classic, May 26, 2008, but hey, we've got plenty of time now!  The TVMRS will be sharing the doubleheader bill with Thunder Road's Late Models, each running a 100-lap main event.

Series founder and competitor Jack Bateman tested his open-wheeled machine at "The Nation's Site of Excitement" last week, and inked the date with Thunder Road bossman Tom Curley on the spot.

"I wanted to test my Modified at the track before we made the decision to have a race there, and it went extremely well, better than I expected," said Bateman.

Using old tires, Bateman's lap times were in the 12.6-second range – three-tenths of a second quicker than the current Late Model track record held by Joey Polewarczyk.  "It wouldn't surprise me to see lap times in the 12.1s and 12.2s for cars on new tires," said Bateman excitedly.  "If the guys are really hooked up, the laps could be even faster."

Top True Value Modified Racing Series drivers include three-time series Champion Kirk Alexander of West Swanzey, NH, 2006 Champion Dwight Jarvis of Ascutney, VT, Windsor, CT's Les Hinckley, Andy Seuss of Hampstead, NH, and Massachusetts drivers Louie Mechalides and Vinnie "Who?" Annarummo.  Top-ten Série ACT Castrol driver Marc-André Cliche of Vallée-Jct., QC is also a part-time racer with the series.

The last Modified race at Thunder Road was in June 1965, won by former National Champion Dick Nephew of Mooers Forks, NY.  Canadian legend Jean-Paul Cabana won the Memorial Day Classic in 1965 at the wheel of a Modified car, as well.  A special "match race" was held at Thunder Road ten years later between the full-bodied Late Model Sportsman car of Dave Dion and the open-wheeled Modified of Donnie "The Golden Jet" Miller – Miller won in a landslide.  A full list of race winners in open-wheel Modified events held in Vermont is currently available at www.thunderroadspeedbowl.com.

We spoke with Ryan Vanasse, who was one of 31 Late Models in the pits at the Lee USA Speedway "Oktoberfest" last weekend.  Vanasse reports that after a last-lap bout with another car, he spun from the second position in his qualifying heat and was forced to start on the tail for the feature.  By the lap 10 mark of the 50-lapper, he was just outside the top ten and making headway when the steering rack began to stick on his Team V Transportation car.

Finally, with about six laps remaining, the rack stuck completely, spinning the car out of sixth place in Turn 2.  After a trip to pit road under the caution flag, the crew freed up the steering enough for Vanasse to finish the race and then watched their driver march from 23rd at the restart to finish 15th.

"It was a typical way to end our season," Vanasse lamented, "but we ran really well and got the car figured out for next year."

Vanasse, who along with maybe Ron Henry, Jamie Aube, Brian Hoar, and Scott Dragon, helped carry the banner for drivers with the worst luck all season, used his back-up car at Lee, the car he campaigned full-time on the ACT Late Model Tour in 2006.  His primary ride for 2007, a Race Basics chassis has been overhauled and dialed in for another go next season.

Vanasse also reports that Jimmy "Scruffy" Linardy, one of the most likeable guys in northeastern short track racing, was in attendance at the Oktoberfest, running his ACT #77 car.  "He ran well, and finished somewhere close to where I ended up in 15th," relayed Vanasse.  (Results of the race were not available at deadline time for this column, sorry!)

Linardy, in his first full year of Late Model racing, qualified for a pair of ACT Late Model Tour events in 2007, at Airborne Speedway in May and at the season-closing New England Dodge Dealers 150 at Oxford Plains Speedway a few weeks back.  The former A.J. Begin crewmember and Lee USA Roadrunner (four-cylinder) driver finished 22nd at Airborne and 27th in Oxford, making solid gains every time out on the track.

Incidentally, multi-time Lee USA Speedway Track Champion J.R. Baril won the race.  Andy Seuss won the True Value Modified Racing Series season finale.

Did you know…?
-Eight full-time Thunder Road Late Model competitors earned the best points finishes of their careers in 2007.  Champion Dave Pembroke and third-place Joey Becker led the way, ahead of Rookie of the Year Chip Grenier (6th overall), Mike "Beetle" Bailey (8th), Marcel Gravel (12th), Shawn Fleury (13th), Brooks Clark (23rd), Doug Murphy (24th).  Their previous bests had been Pembroke: 2nd in 2004; Becker: 5th in 2006; Bailey: 15th in 2006; Gravel: 13th in 2006; and Fleury: 20th in 1999.  Grenier, Clark, and Murphy had never attempted more than two races in a season prior to 2007.

-The 29 drivers that comprised the finishing order of the 44th Annual Chittenden Milk Bowl at Thunder Road in September have combined for – get this – no fewer than 35 touring series championships and at least 29 track championships.  That does not take into account Rookie of the Year titles, mini-series titles (like Roger Brown's L/A Harley-Davidson Challenge championship this year, or Jean-Paul Cyr's Am/Can Challenge title in 1996), state championships, or titles in a "support" division like the NAPA Tiger Sportsman, Allen Lumber Street Stock, or Power Shift Warrior classes.  Add in the titles from the drivers that failed to qualify, and the numbers top 40 and 35, respectively.

-Nick Sweet became the first Barre, VT driver to win the Thunder Road Sportsman title since, well, technically he's the first.  Greg "Burger" Blake was the 1989 Thunder Road Champion, but lives just across the line in East Barre.  Beede brothers Chuck (1985) and Dan (1987) have long claimed Williamstown and/or Graniteville their homes, although when both men were in their ACT Tour days in the late '80s and early '90s, they were "relocated" by the media the Barre.  Bobby Therrien is the first Street Stock champ from the town of Hinesburg, VT, and is the third Chittenden County resident to win the crown.  Before him were Joe Small (Milton – 2004-05) and Jason Gibbs (1994).  Bunker Hodgdon is the second Hardwick, VT driver in a row to win the Warrior title, following Maynard Bartlett, Jr.

Litt Lands LairJet on Podium at Delaware, Finishes Season at Berlin

Ryan Litt was just hoping to finish his first Supermodified feature on Friday, September 28.  In two previous ISMA events, the Lyons, Ontario-based driver battled handling and mechanical problems, while finishing only a handful of feature laps in a supermodified prior to this year's event at Delware.  This all changed on Friday night as Litt piloted the #07 owned by Dave Lair to a second place finish in the 50 lap feature event.

Litt started the night off with a fine second place run in the first heat race of the night, with top drivers such as visiting NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series star Johnny Benson, and Rob Summers finishing behind him.  By virtue of finishing near the front of his heat, ISMA's handicapping system put Litt on the pole of the feature event, a situation which the sprint car veteran took full advantage of.

Litt took off at the drop of the green flag, knowing the fast cars would waste no time moving up from their handicapped starting positions in the middle of the field.  Three brief caution periods slowed the event in the first ten laps, but Litt was able to reassert his lead after each of these slowdowns.  An entertaining battle at the front started to take shape on the third restart, as former ISMA champion Dave McKnight and teammate Mike Lichty, along with all time ISMA feature win leader and 3-time ISMA champ Chris Perley had quickly advanced to the front of the pack.  By lap 20, McKnight and Perley had started to put pressure on the #07, and the three drivers had opened up some distance on the rest of the field.

One final caution period slowed the field on the 23rd lap, and then the second half of the 50 lap feature was run entirely under the green flag.  Litt managed to keep the obviously faster cars of McKnight and Perley behind him for longer than many onlookers thought, but on the 32nd lap, McKnight finally got by and began to stretch out the lead.  Four laps later, Perley also got by, but then on the 40th lap, Perley slipped high in turn 4 and Litt quickly pounced, retaking the second position.  The top three remained constant for the last ten laps, and with Mark Sammut and Mike Lichty finishing 4th and 5th, Perley was the only driver in the top 5 who doesn't call Ontario home.

McKnight commented on his pursuit of Litt in victory lane - "The battle with Ryan was great. He's an up and comer. I know the Litt family from way back and I'm happy for them. Ryan did a great job tonight. He kept it tight. He made me work the outside. He didn't give me an inch. That team definitely had a shot at the win."

After enjoying the moment at Delaware, it was time to get on the road and head to Berlin Raceway, near Grand Rapids, Michigan, where Ryan planned to do double duty – driving in both the ISMA Supermodified division, and the AVSS Sprint Car division.  Unfortunately, the supermodified decided to be uncooperative, as the engine blew up in practice.  This left Ryan and the team to concentrate on the sprint car for the evening.  Things started off well, with the #07 BS&B Radiator/OTC-SPX Tools, Beast/Claxton sprinter sitting near the top of the speed charts in practice, but qualifying time trials provided a setback, as Ryan could only muster the 11th best time in the session.  This put the team behind the 8-ball for the rest of the night, as there was no chance of being in the inversion for feature starting positions.  Ryan went out for his heat and won it fairly easily, but in the feature the car was not handling very well and Ryan almost spun out a couple of times.  With an epic battle going on for the AVSS championship title between Jeff Bloom and Jason Blonde, Ryan pulled into the pits rather than risking interfering with the outcome of the race, and so the #07 ended the season on a sour note, sitting in the pits before the checkered flag.  It was at least an entertaining event, as Blonde and Bloom fought tooth and nail for the championship title, swapping positions in the top 5 numerous times before the race was over, with Bloom nipping Blonde at the finish line for 5th, but losing the championship title by 1 measly point.

The season started and ended on sour notes for Ryan and the team, but in between there were plenty of highlights, including an 11th place finish in the Little 500 in May, the first fast qualifier award of Ryan's sprint car career at the Fastest Short Track Show in the World at Toledo in June, a feature win on home soil at the Cayuga Speedway in July, and the 2nd place finish at Delaware last month.  Ryan and the team would like to thank all their family, fans, and sponsors for their support of the 2007 campaign.  Sponsors for the 2007 season included OTC/SPX Tools, BS&B Radiator, BRR Media, BOC Gases, Leaf Racewear, and Huron Produce.  A special thanks also to Dave Lair for once again inviting Ryan to drive his Supermodified at Toledo, Delaware, and Berlin this season.

At this time, it is possible that Ryan and the team may compete in some special events in Florida in December, but that has not been decided yet.  Plans for the 2008 season have not yet been finalized either, so check back next month for some possible news on those fronts.

For more information on Ryan, the car, and the team, including schedules, photos, merchandise, and contact information, please visit Ryan's official website at www.RyanLitt.com .

Pacific Forest Rally results: Twelfth national victory for Antoine L'Estage

MERRIT, BC - The team formed by Canadian defending champion driver Antoine L'Estage and his co-driver Nathalie Richard, both from St-Jean-sur-Richelieu (Quebec), dominated this weekend's Pacific Forest Rally, penultimate round of the 2007 Canadian Rally Championship presented by Subaru and Castrol.

With their Hyundai Tiburon 4WD, L'Estage/Richard were never challenged for the lead of the event which they led from start to finish. They finished with a 6 minute and 7 seconds advantage over local favourites Norm LeBlanc (BC)/Keith Morison (AB) with their Production 4 class (models closed to the production) Subaru Impreza WRX. It was a fantastic result for the Western crew in their only national rally event of the year! LeBlanc/Morison finished ahead of championship contenders Andrew Comrie-Picard (Toronto, ON) and American co-driver Marc Goldfarb with their Mitsubishi Lancer Evo.9 RS. Hindered by a wrong choice of tires and centre differential problems, Comrie-Picard/Goldfarb lost important points in the championship chase as L'Estage now has a 15 point lead. It was also the twelfth national victory in Antoine L'Estage last eighteen events.

Regular competitors in the western events, Scott and Robert Trinder (BC) finished fourth in a Subaru Impreza WRX, ahead of Gord Olsen (AB) and Todd Patola (BC), also in a Subaru Impreza WRX.

In Group 2 (category for 2-wheel drive modified cars), the battle between Colin Armstrong/Ryan Warrington (AB), in a Volkswagen Golf, and Aaron Neumann/Graham Coates (BC), in their Honda Civic, was the focus of attention for many of the spectators with both crews seeking for victory throughout the rally. In the end, Neumann/Coates took the win, but Armstrong/ Warrington have secured the Group 2 championship. Colin Armstrong is also leading the novice driver category. These two Group 2 crews finished sixth and seventh overall, followed by Ontarians Nicola and Massimo Narini (Subaru Legacy GT).

While there were only a couple of retirements during this 2007 edition of the Pacific Forest Rally, weather conditions provided the greatest challenge during the event for both the organizers and the competitors. Rain in the host town of Merritt meant significant snow at higher elevations forcing cancellation of two mountain stages. The organizers had to revise the schedule and two replacement stages were added. Many of the roads used were snow and ice covered providing the competitors with critical tire choice decisions and difficult driving conditions.

The final round of the Canadian Rally Championship, presented by Subaru and Castrol, will take place November 24 in Ontario (Tall Pines Rally). It will be there that the driver's title is claimed by either Antoine L'Estage or Andrew Comrie-Picard.

The filming of the series for TV broadcasting is provided by ATV Productions. Information on the Canadian Rally Championship and the various Canadian rally competitions is available at http://www.carsrally.ca/.

Pacific Forest Rally final standings (complete results on www.pacificforestrally.com):
1) Antoine L'Estage – Nathalie Richard (Hyundai Tiburon 4WD) – 1 hour 49 min. 30 sec.
2) Norm LeBlanc – Keith Morison (Subaru Impreza WRX) – 1h55'37
3) Andrew Comrie-Picard – Marc Goldfarb (Mitsubishi Lancer Evo.9) – 1h57'26
4) Scott Trinder – Robert Trinder (Subaru Impreza WRX) – 2h00'49
5) Gord Olsen – Todd Patola (Subaru Impreza WRX) – 2h02'13
6) Aaron Neumann – Graham Coates (Honda Civic) – 2h08'48
7) Colin Armstrong – Ryan Warrington (Volkswagen Golf GTI) – 2h09'59
8) Nicola Narini – Massimo Narini (Subaru Legacy GT) – 2h11'05

Jacques Villeneuve's Martinsville Recap

Jacques Villeneuve - Unicef Tundra

Post Race Report
Race:                          Kroger 2000
Track:                                    Martinsville Speedway
Date:                           Saturday, Oct. 20, 2007
Started:                      27th
Finished:                    32nd
Laps Completed:       157
Total Laps:                200

Jacques Villeneuve went to Martinsville (Va.) Speedway hoping to run well in his first-ever short track event.  He practiced at Caraway Speedway, near Asheboro, N.C., earlier in the month in preparation for this race, and he and his No. 27 Unicef Toyota Tundra team were ready to get going Friday morning.

Rain set in and halted the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series practice sessions, meaning teams waited all day before having the opportunity to practice that afternoon.  Villeneuve and his team made a number of changes to their truck during the lone practice session.  Villeneuve quickly gained speed, and the team was pleased with the outcome of the session.

Villeneuve was the second driver to make a qualifying attempt Saturday morning.  A good lap 20.340 seconds earned him the 27th position on the starting grid.

After the green flag was displayed to start the race Saturday afternoon, Villeneuve immediately showed his talent, as he picked off positions one by one.  By lap 20, Villeneuve had told crew chief Doug Wolcott that the handling of his Unicef Tundra was loose, and he needed a change soon.

The first caution of the day began on lap 25, during which time Villeneuve and the rest of the field dove down pit road.  The No. 27 team made a trackbar adjustment during the four-tire stop, and Villeneuve restarted 20th on lap 30.

Villeneuve immediately moved forward again and had worked his way into the top 15 by lap 90 of the 200-lap event.  The handling of his Tundra became tighter by the lap, yet Villeneuve remained calm and continued to prove his skills on the track.

On lap 158, there was contact between the trucks of Jason Leffler and Clint Bowyer.  Villeneuve had nowhere to go, and his Unicef Tundra was shoved around like a ping pong ball before hitting the wall hard.  The damage forced Villeneuve and the No. 27 team to retire from the race.  They finished 32nd, 43 laps down to the leader.

Editorial Comment - Brazilian Grand Prix

By James Neilson

What an entertaining way to finish the year. You've got to love the Brazilian Grand Prix wrapping up the season for the last few years. It actually means those of us in North America can watch the season's final race at a decent hour.

So Raikonnen won, Alonso looked like a guy who didn't give a crap as long as his teammate didn't win and Hamilton finally looked like a Formula 1 rookie. It was bound to happen sooner or later but it was too bad it came at such a crucial moment in the season.

As usual the race was a procession, settled in the pits. Is it too much to ask for an exciting championship battle with exciting races on track?

Could that have been the most subdued title race of all time? I mean we all know Kimi Raikkonen isn't going to flip out over anything besides a bottle of Crystal and an inflatable Godzilla (Kudos to anyone who gets that reference). But could ITV commentators James Allen and Martin Brundle have been more depressed at the end of that race? I know they're British but that was a joke.

At one point they even hoped Alonso would move out of the way for Hamilton to help his title chances. Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha! Those guys are freaking comedians. I had a pretty crappy weekend all around and that single comment, absurd to the point of sad, practically made my weekend. I will construct a working prototype of the Delorean from Back to the Future before Alonso ever moves over for Hamilton.

So then to top it all off, like only F1, and apparently the Maritime Pro Stock Tour, can do Ron Dennis has disputed the result of the race, putting the final standings in doubt.

Kudos to you Ron Dennis; you mismanaged the most talented driver pairing in Formula 1, lost complete control of your employees, had your team kicked out of the Constructor's Championship and now you're adding another black eye to Formula 1 by creating the possibility that the title will be decided by the courts.

Aren't you sick of courts by now?

Raikkonen Wins F1 Title - For Now

By James Neilson

Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen rebounded from a lackluster early season, winning the Brazilian Grand Prix and capturing the 2007 Formula 1 World Championship in the season's last race. McLaren's Lewis Hamilton came into the race leading the championship while his teammate, Fernando Alonso, sat in second with Raikkonen in third.

It didn't take long for Hamilton to toss his title hopes away, after going off on the opening lap, trying to get around Alonso, Hamilton's car slowed, apparently struggling with some sort of electronic glitch.

Ultimately his car kept going but it was clear by then that the Ferrari's had the speed over their McLaren rivals. Hamilton valiantly tried to get back into contention while Alonso could never get close to Felipe Massa or his Ferrari teammate, Riakkonen.

There was some controversy as Massa had led handily until a pitstop put him behind Raikkonen for the remainder of the race. Then, after the race, there were fuel irregularities found in the BMW's of Nick Heidfeld and Robert Kubica, as well as the Williams of Nico Rosberg.

The stewards claim that Heidfeld's, Kubica's and Rosberg's cars fuel was below the tolerable limit but that it was almost impossible to prove the accuracy of the measurement, thus no penalty was applied.

McLaren has appealed the decision leaving the title up in the air for now. If Heidfeld, Kubica and Rosberg were to be disqualified Hamilton would be elevated to fourth, securing the World title in his rookie season.

Here we go again....

Legendary motorsports reporter Shav Glick passes away at 87

GLENDORA, Calif. - Legendary Los Angeles Times motorsports reporter Shav Glick died early Saturday morning after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 87.

The only two-time winner of the NHRA Media Award (1977 and 1985), the personable Glick was more than just a sports reporter from a major metro daily newspaper assigned to cover drag races; he became close friends with many racers in the NHRA POWERade Series, including Don Prudhomme, Kenny Bernstein, Joe Amato and John Force, among others. His last story that appeared in the Times was an obituary published three weeks ago in which he eloquently reported the passing of one of his best friends, 94-year-old NHRA founder Wally Parks.

In February 2006, NHRA hosted a retirement party for Glick at the Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum in Pomona, where he was offered special thanks in moving tributes by Prudhomme, Force and several others. NHRA President Tom Compton and Parks presented Glick with a custom-made NHRA POWERade Series golf bag and commemorative plaque for his many years of coverage of NHRA Drag Racing. More than 300 members of the NHRA community, including racers, sponsors, public relations representatives, and many of his peers in the journalism world, attended the event.

In the early 1990s Glick was honored by NHRA for his countless contributions to the sport of NHRA Drag Racing through four decades of consistent and accurate coverage with the naming of the Shav Glick Media Center at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona.

Shav was a very special person in the world of motorsports, and he will forever hold a special place in the hearts of everyone at NHRA and in the NHRA Drag Racing community, said Compton. He was respected as a pioneer in motorsports reporting, and he had many personal relationships with the people who worked at NHRA and the generation of racers he covered. He will always be remembered as a consummate professional who loved what he did and the people he worked with. He received many honors during his career, including being named the only two-time winner of the NHRA Media Award, and we are proud to say that the Shav Glick Media Center at historic Auto Club Raceway at Pomona will forever serve as a tribute to the man whose coverage on the pages of the Los Angeles Times helped NHRA to grow and prosper into the second largest motorsport in the country.

DIRTcar: Eastern States 200 Report

Middletown, NY - October 21, 2007 - By Tom Skibinski, Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series PR Director

Home track favorite Jeff Heotzler ended a story book season as he outlasted Billy Decker on Sunday to capture the 46th Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series Eastern States 200 Big-Block Modified Championship at Orange County Fair Speedway. Heotzler earned the 2007 Orange County points title without a single win before closing out the season with the biggest victory of his career that awarded him the $20,000 first-place prize.

After starting 42nd in the 46-car field, Heotzler sped past Billy Decker when his full tank ran dry on lap 193 and held off three-time defending race winner Brett Hearn in a race that was slowed by 18 caution periods and a trio of red flags. Hearn's runner-up tally secured him the overall Hoosier Tire-Sunoco Race Fuels Mr. DIRTcar Modified Series Championship, with veteran Rich Eurich crossing the line third ahead of Pennsylvanian Rick Laubach and Captital District runner Kenny Tremont.
