RYAN LITT: TOLEDO RUNNER-UP, AUTO CITY NEXT

by Tommy Goudge (June 24, 2010) – London, Ontario driver Ryan Litt and the #07L BS&B Radiator/OTC Tools Sprint Car team were in action at Toledo Speedway’s “Fastest Short Track Show in the World” on Friday, June 11, and came away pleased with a second place finish in the Sprint Car division.

The day began with Ryan qualifying third in Auto Value/Bumper to Bumper Super Sprints series time trials with a lap of 12.85 seconds around the high-banked half mile. Derek Snyder took fast time honours and also set a new track record at 12.65, well over 140 MPH.

“We had a really good car at Toledo,” says Ryan. “It was at the top of the charts all day. We were a tick tight in qualifying but still good enough to lock down third place. Congratulations to Derek and family for setting the new track record, it couldn't go to a more deserving bunch.”

Toledo has always been a good track for Ryan and the team, and they had high hopes for the feature race.

“We started fourth in the feature and moved into third on the first lap,” says Ryan. “I was really concentrating on trying to keep the tires under me so I could charge to the front near the end, but I think I waited a little too long. I was passing for second and slid high and (Jason) Blonde slipped by. I knew once he got to the lead he'd be gone, so I turned it up after that and got into second behind him.”

The race came down to the last few laps, and Ryan was going hard trying to get his first win of the season. Veteran driver and multi-time sprint car champion Jason Blonde was in front of him.

“We caught him in traffic with a few laps to go,” says Ryan. “The racing was really tight - the cars move around in dirty air a lot, so it definitely got wild with under five (laps) to go. We closed up the gap to about a car length and then got stuck behind two lapped cars who were racing each other. Overall it was a good night for us and hopefully the end of our bad luck that we've had throughout the year.”

Ryan also drove the #70 Supermodified for owner Gary Morton of Stouffville, Ontario at Toledo, as the Midwest Supermodified Association was in competition.

“I had a lot of fun running Gary’s super,” says Ryan. “It's always tough jumping in a new car for the first time and expecting to run with the regulars, but we were doing alright until the motor expired with two (laps) to go. Gotta thank Gary for hiring me to run his car - it was a blast.”

Supermodifieds and Sprints rarely run on the same night at the same track. Ryan relished the opportunity to do both at Toledo.

“It was one of the most humid days we've had yet, so running two cars was definitely a good workout,” says Ryan of doing double duty. “I don't think I had more than 10 minutes of rest all night, besides the rain delay. I love it though - the more laps I can turn, the better.”

Last weekend, Ryan had plans of travelling to Florida to compete for the DeCaire Motorsports team at Desoto Speedway. A bad forecast cancelled those plans, so Ryan’s next race will now be this Saturday, June 26 at Auto City Speedway near Flint, Michigan for round number four of the Must See Racing Xtreme Sprint Series season. Ryan has competed in five career events at the unique 7/16 mile oval, compiling one top five, three top tens, and one fast time award. His best feature finish at Auto City is fourth, on May 10, 2008.

“Auto City isn't one of my favorite tracks,” says Ryan, “But with this new format it should make it pretty exciting. It's usually a tough track to pass on, so hopefully we have some good luck and can start near the front.”

Auto City was once a hub of open wheel activity, but had just two open wheel races on the schedule last year (one of which fell to rain), and none for the 410 Sprints. This Saturday’s event is the only open wheel race scheduled this season at the track. A good purse – including $3,000 to the winner – has been posted, and an extra $1,000 will be added if the winner accepts the challenge of starting at the tail. A unique format is in place for the race, with time trials, heat races, twenty lap qualifying races, and a twenty lap feature scheduled. The race will also be taped for television broadcast, and a full pit area and large crowd are expected.

“With the increase in purse, and with the bonus, all of us drivers will be pushing it extra hard and raising the bar,” says Ryan. “I wouldn't be surprised to see another track record broken, and fans can be sure to catch a lot of side by side racing.”

FENWICK FLYER: WILD WIN

By Tommy Goudge (June 24, 2010) – Tom Huppunen and the #12c Best Western Cairn Croft Hotel Sprint Car team visited victory lane at Ohsweken Speedway for the first time last Friday night. Tom toughed it out on a rough track surface and overcame a mid-race challenge from Keith Dempster to get the win on Best Western Cairn Croft night at the Speedway.

The night started with Tom running fast in hot laps. He drove the #12c to fourth in the first heat race, good enough to transfer directly to the feature and a spot in the redraw. Tom got the outside pole and took off at the start of the twenty lap feature, but was being a bit too cautious on the rough track and lost the lead to Dempster on lap seven. Tom got the lead back after a mid-race restart, and led the rest of the way to get his first win of the season.

“The car needed some TLC with the steering rod bent and loose, and the right rear shock losing its oil,” says Tom. “The oil scavenge lines got crushed on the motor from mud, and the rad mounts got loose and almost wrecked the rad. I took the whole driveline apart and checked all the torsion bars just to be sure there wasn't any damage that wasn't as obvious. Oh yeah, wore the brake pads to dust too.”

A week before the win, Tom got back on track with a solid sixth place finish after a rough start to the season. Earlier that night in hot laps Tom was extremely fast, running a lap time just one hundredth of a second off his own track record. The sixth place finish coupled with last week’s win has Tom back in the top ten in the championship standings at Ohsweken, as he and the #12c team try to defend their 2009 title.

This week is another weekly event at Ohsweken for Tom and the #12c team, and also serves as one last tune-up before the Northern Summer Nationals at Ohsweken scheduled for July 2.

Tom answers: “I know I am doing a good lap time when I don’t have to put much steering input going into the corners, and I can let the car drift out towards the wall near the middle of the straightaway. It feels much like karting back in the day - just a bit faster.”

Pirelli creates Formula 1 team...

MILAN, ITALY - The chairman of the Pirelli Group, Marco Tronchetti Provera, and Pirelli Tire's managing director, Francesco Gori, today presented to the media the company's plans for supplying tires to Formula One for the three-year period between 2011-2013.

The company's program includes the creation of a dedicated team for the development and production of Formula One tires. The Team of internal Pirelli human resources will be made up of engineers and researchers who have accumulated experience at the highest levels of motorsport: creating winning products for rallying, Superbike, the Rolex Sports Car Series in North America and GT racing, as well as various one-make series. This ensures that the other divisions of the company remain focused on the ongoing business.

In order to meet the Formula One teams' requirements in terms of reliability, safety and performance, Pirelli's engineers are already working on simulation models and tire compounds that will be most suited to the rigors of Grand Prix racing.

The Pirelli Formula One team will be an international group of people based in Milan, the home of Pirelli Tire's research and development department. This division has traditionally been at the heart of Pirelli's cutting-edge technology and is formed of 1000 research engineers, working in five development centers all over the world. Pirelli Tire allocates each year between 3 and 4% of its revenues, the highest level in the tire industry worldwide, to research. Motorsport activities have benefited for many years from the innovations introduced to high-performance tires by Pirelli's Research and Development.

The Formula One tires will be produced in the motorsport department of Pirelli's Izmit factory in Turkey, which is entirely dedicated to competition tires.

As established by the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile), the Pirelli Formula 1 supply agreement includes development of six different types of tire for the whole season. Four of these will be slick tires – with different compounds to suit various dry asphalt surfaces – and one will be a rain tire, for heavy precipitation. Finally there will be an intermediate tire, for damp conditions and light rain.

In co-operation with the teams, Pirelli is also ready to develop technical evolutions to the current tires for the future, regarding in particular the wheel size.

Today's economic climate has enforced a realistic and collaborative approach to share out the production and logistical costs associated with supplying tires to Formula One teams fairly. Pirelli will also invest in communications activities to leverage the technological and production values associated with Formula One, utilizing resources and budget that have already been set aside for this specific purpose. Formula One will become an important showcase for the Pirelli brand along with its commercial and industrial growth, without impacting on the company's existing financial strategy in any way.

In the coming years, Formula One is expected to attract around two billion television viewers per season, with important media coverage in emerging markets as well. Pirelli's business development and growth strategy, which is concentrated in these areas, will benefit hugely from the global visibility offered by Formula One, helping to promote the brand and maximize return on the marketing investment.

TWIN THUNDERSTOCK FEATURES AND MORE THIS FRIDAY AT OHSWEKEN

By Tommy Goudge (June 23, 2010) – The fifth round of Ohsweken Speedway’s Friday Night Thunder hits the track this Friday, June 25. This week’s event is presented by BS&B Radiator and features twin fifteen lap features for the ESSO Thunder Stocks, plus a full card of Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Cars, ESSO Thunder Stocks, ESSO Mini Stocks, and Bombers, plus Kids Box Car Races!

Kyle Moffit of South Dayton, NY finished third in the Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Car feature last week, and took over at the top of the championship standings as a result. Alton’s Keith Dempster came home second to feature winner Tom Huppunen, but he moved to second in the standings just five points behind Moffit. Dave Dykstra entered the evening as points leader, but missing the scales after the feature cost him a fifth place finish and the points lead. The Port Colborne driver now sits third, nine points out of first. “Tilbury Tornado” Kyle Patrick got another top ten last week and is fourth in the standings, followed by Campbellville’s Kevin Job, who finished fourth last week.

The ESSO Thunder Stock championship chase was also shaken up last Friday when Billy Bleich lost a tire during the feature and ended up ninth. The Port Robinson driver’s points lead was cut to just thirteen over Caledonia’s Lee Winger as a result. Winger finished third in the feature behind Cambridge driver Jamie Cox, and defending division champion Shayne Pierce of Welland. Cox now sits third in the standings, ahead of Stoney Creek driver Jeremy Bean, and Dave Bailey of Hagersville.

Trevor Goulding visited Engine Pro Racing Victory Lane again in ESSO Mini Stock action last Friday. The Welland resident has now claimed three out of the four features run so far in the division this season, and leads the points chase by twenty-seven over Kevin Hilborn of Brantford as a result. Craig Erskine is the only other driver in the division to claim a win this year, and sits third in the standings, followed by Paul Goodale, and Waterford driver Mark Thorne.

Karl Sault also claimed his third feature win of the season on Friday in the Bomber division. The Dundas driver now enjoys a fifty point lead over John Cote and Dave Patton, who are tied for second. Kacey Huffman is currently fourth, while Shawn Ireland and the Chechalk team are tied for fifth.

STAR MAZDA FEATURES A FOUR TIME WINNER LOOKING TO MAKE IT FIVE AND A TOP MOTORCYCLE RACER TRADING TWO WHEELS FOR FOUR IN FEATURE DOUBLE-HEADER AT NJMP

New Jersey Motorsports Park (June 21, 2010) -- The battle for the 2010 Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear hits the half-way mark this weekend with a double-header on live HDnet TV at New Jersey Motorsports Park – and two interesting stories.

The first involves a hot young driver looking to make Star Mazda history. Thus far this season, it's pretty much been the Conor Daly show, with the Indianapolis teenager and son of racing legend Derek Daly winning the last four races in a row driving the #22 Juncos Racing / INDECK / The College Network / Merchant Services Ltd. Mazda – and headed for the New Jersey track where he won in 2009. But the gods of racing are nothing if not fickle, and he'll be facing some stiff – and experienced – competition this weekend.

There are a number of potential spoilers hoping to bring an end to Daly's '5 in a row' scenario. Among the leaders is Quebec youngster Mikael Grenier driving the #17 Andersen Racing / Slow Cow / April Super Flow / NAPA Auto Parts / HS Telecom / Desharnais Mazda. Currently 4th in the championship with a pole and podium finish in the Night Before the 500 at O'Reilly Raceway Park, Grenier brushed the wall mid-way through last weekend's second annual Star Mazda Pizza Ranch 100 at the 7/8ths-mile Iowa Speedway oval. The contact relegated him to a 15th-place finish and did a bit of mischief to his standing in the championship, dropping him from 2nd to 4th, but Star Mazda awards 44 points for a win and while Daly's 216 points gives him a comfortable cushion over Grenier's 163, it's hardly insurmountable.

Other top contenders with experience at the New Jersey Motorsports track include Brazilian racer Caio Lara (#19 JDC Motorsports / MLD / ATW Mazda) who scored a pair of top-5 finishes at this event in 2009, and other top contenders with experience on the New Jersey Motorsports Park track include Jorge Goncalvez (#9 Team Apex / Wabash Capital Investments Mazda) driving for a hot new team that put two drivers on the podium in the Night Before the 500 Round 5 at O'Reilly Raceway Park in Indianapolis on Memorial Day weekend. Norwegian racer Anders 'The Viking' Krohn scored a top-6 finish at NJMP last year, in addition to winning on the Milwaukee Mile Oval. This year he's back with the team that helped him with the 2008 F2000 championship and is second in the championship battle driving the #47 Andersen Racing / Norse Cutting & Abandonment / Trallfa / Colosseum Mazda to a pole at the Sebring season-opener, a podium and four top-5s.

Another driver who changed teams, albeit more recently – between Rounds 4 and 5 of this season – is Texan Rusty Mitchell. After two seasons with the family Mitchell Motorsports team, he's now in the cockpit of the #66 Juncos Racing / Motorola / Petro Communications / HRP Racing Products / Texas Autosports Mazda. Juncos Racing is currently the hottest team in the Star Mazda Championship; in their rookie year, 2009, they won four races with Irish phenom Peter Dempsey and have already won four with American phenom Conor Daly.

Also keep an eye on a hungry young driver named Connor De Phillippi, driving the #11 JDC Motorsports / MAZDASPEED Motorsports / Skip Barber Mazda. He won the 2009 Skip Barber Pro Series and is driving in the 2010 Star Mazda championship with backing from the MAZDASPEED Motorsports Driver Development Ladder, the unique and prestigious automaker-backed program that helps champions at each level of open-wheel racing move up the ladder. He has three top-5s and two top-7s this year and is currently 5th in the championship.

The other interesting story this weekend involves a brand-new driver who is unlikely to win the race, but will certainly attract a good deal of attention from fans and media, given the popularity of SuperBike racing at NJMP. Larry Pegram is one of the top motorcycle racers in North America (currently 5th in the AMA Pro American SuperBike championship) making an exploratory run in the Star Mazda Championship. Pegram has scored one win, four podiums and seven top-5 finishes so far this season riding the #72 foremost Insurance/Pegram Racing Ducati 1098R. He scored two top-5 finishes in the SuperBike race at NJMP in 2009. Pegram brings with him a film crew shooting a reality series about his exploits as he makes the switch from two wheels to four. He is making his Star Mazda debut with the help and support of friend and fellow Star Mazda driver Walt Bowlin. Pegram will compete in the Expert Series for drivers between 30 and 44 years of age while Bowlin races in the Master Series (45 and older). Let's hope we don't see a 'reversal of fortune' this weekend involving these two: Bowlin missed several races earlier this season due to a broken collarbone, an injury he suffered while test-riding Pegram's SuperBike.

All the racing action this weekend at New Jersey Motorsports Park, including the Star Mazda Championship, the Cooper Tires Presents USF2000 National Championship powered by Mazda, Mazda MX-5 Cup, IMSA Prototype Lites and the Patron GT3Challenge, will be broadcast live on HDnet. The pre-race show takes place 12:30 pm – 1:00 pm, and 1:00pm – 4:00 pm will be live coverage of the Playboy Mazda MX 5 Cup, USF2000, and The Star Mazda/Visit Florida Cup. All times are Eastern. Rick Benjamin will call the play-by-play, and a pair of well-known racers, Johnny O'Connell (USF2000 and Star Mazda) and Elliott Forbes-Robinson (Mazda MX-5 Cup) will be the on-air analysts. Todd Lewis will be the pit reporter. In addition to the live broadcast, both Playboy Mazda MX 5 Cup races and one of the two Star Mazda Championship races will be cable syndicated across the USA, Canada and worldwide.

The NJMP weekend is part of the partnership between MAZDASPEED and VISIT FLORIDA that includes the 5-weekend, 7-race VISIT FLORIDA Cup, a championship-within-a-championship in which the driver scoring the most points during the five VISIT FLORIDA weekends will win both the VISIT FLORIDA Cup and a personalized Florida dream vacation.
Star Mazda Championship on-track action begins with a 'promoter test day' on Thursday, June 23 with 40-minute sessions in the morning and afternoon. Practice continues on Friday, June 24, with qualifying for Race #1 from 9:45 am – 10:30 am Saturday, June 26. The traditional Star Mazda standing start gets the green light at 3:00 pm Saturday afternoon. Qualifying for Race #2 is from 9:05 am – 9:50 am Sunday, June 27 with the race start scheduled for 3:05 pm that afternoon.

Seibert stays hot with top-five at PGARA Speedway Park; ARCA OK Tire Challenge Series points leader shows poise at tough track

June 21, 2010, Prince George, BC - Ryley Seibert excelled again scoring a top five finish in round three of ARCA's OK Tire Challenge Series at PGARA Speedway Park on
Saturday. The Williams Lake, BC, teenager, showed a veteran's poise using patience to carve through the field in the Mr. Quick Lube Shell 100 to finish fourth.
"I'm really proud of what we did this weekend," said Seibert. "I'd never seen PGARA Speedway Park let alone turned a lap on it. Our game plan was to wait until the
midway point of the race to make a move, and I think we executed well."
Seibert qualified eighth fastest in time trials, but according to the series' rookie rules he started the main event 13th. The game plan worked early in the race as
Seibert saved his equipment for a mid race charge.
By lap 70 Seibert cracked the top five, and he made his move to fourth 10 laps later.
"At the end of the race I was right on the tail of the third place car," Seibert said. "With a little more time I may have taken the spot, but I'm not sure I had
anything for the top two."
The rookie rule used in the series forces rookie racers to start behind the experienced drivers for the first three events. Seibert's probation of sorts is over. On
July 17th when the series visits Goldpan Speedway in Quesnel, BC, he will start the feature where qualifies.
"On one hand it's been great for my learning curve," said Seibert. "I've had to deal with traffic coming from the back, so it's helped with my confidence in the car.
But I'm definitely looking forward to starting where I qualify at the next show."
Entering the Prince George event Seibert held the OK Tire Challenge Series points lead after two events. With his solid showing he will remain atop the standings.
"We're going to compete for the championship," said Seibert. "We hadn't decided when we started the year what we wanted to do, but with our early success we want to
chase the title."
Seibert hopes to follow in his father's footsteps to compete in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series. If he gets his way it will be sooner than later.
"We're trying to put a sponsorship package together to race in Vernon," said Seibert. "It would be great to start my NASCAR career close to home. I have alot of laps
there, and with the right car I think we could contend for a good finish."
