ALMS: Porsche, Penske To Run New Prototype In American Le Mans
BRASELTON, GA - In what American Le Mans Series President and CEO Scott Atherton calls "one of the most significant if not the most significant announcement in our series' history," ALMS and Porsche jointly announced today that Penske Motorsports, Inc. will field a new Porsche prototype racecar in the ALMS.
The history-making unveiling of the new prototype sports car racing program intended for customer race teams was made at Road Atlanta, scene for Sunday's ALMS Sportsbook.com Grand Prix of Atlanta, by Peter Schwarzenbauer, President and CEO of Porsche Cars North America, Inc. (PCNA); Roger Penske, Chairman and CEO of Penske Motorsports, Inc.; and Uwe Brettel, President of Porsche Motorsport North America (PMNA).
"Our American racing customers have made it clear to us that they would like to move up several levels in the ALMS competition, as would we," said Schwarzenbauer. "We believe this new Porsche prototype program will provide the perfect means to do so and will generate added enthusiasm for sports car racing in America, especially with Penske Motorsports as our partner and initial entrant.
"The American Le Mans Series offers manufacturers such as Porsche the opportunity to showcase both their chassis and engine technology," Schwarzenbauer added.

Porsche's key corporate North American organizations - PCNA and PMNA - have commissioned their parent company, Porsche AG, to design and construct a race car that will be eligible to compete in the LMP2 (Le Mans Prototype 2) ALMS class. It will be the first purpose-built Porsche factory racecar since the 1998 Porsche 911 GT1.
Since the inception of the ALMS in 1999, Porsche's customer teams have competed in the ALMS GT2 class where they have won five manufacturer championships in the last six years, including last year's GT2 title. Porsche holds the all-time mark for race wins and poles with 49 and 50, respectively. For more than 30 years, the highly successful North American Porsche customer racing programs have featured such famed Porsche racecars as the 934, 935 and 962.
Porsche's last factory effort in IMSA was the Porsche 962. Porsche announced Friday that it will re-enter the prototype ranks at Petit Le Mans.
Penske Motorsports, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Penske Racing, Inc., will field the new Porsche prototype in its first full season of competition exclusively in 2006. One of the world's most successful racing organizations, Penske Racing has a rich racing history with Porsche highlighted by championships in the 1972 and 1973 SCCA Can-Am Series, campaigning the legendary Porsche 917/10 and 917/30 race cars. It is anticipated that Penske Motorsports will debut the new Porsche prototype at the final two races of the ALMS season - the Oct. 1 Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta and the Oct.16 season finale at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, as test events before entering the entire 2006 season.

LAKE ERIE SPEEDWAY: SST Starts Off At Lake Erie Speedway

Spring is here and the Super Short Track racing is ready to fire up the 2005 season. Many new faces along with the heroes of 2004 will be looking for the green.
Lake Erie Speedway, under the new leadership of Joe Lewandowski and team, welcomes the competitors of this sportsman modified series April 23 & 24th for the Spring Thaw 75 lap Sunday feature event. SST teams along with several other featured divisions will be welcome to practice beginning on Friday, April 22. SST Tech Inspector Dennis Murphy Jr. requests SST teams to prepare for pre-race tech at 9am Saturday morning prior to practice.
SST licenses will be available for processing the weekend of this inaugural Lake Erie Speedway event. All proceeds are directed toward the year end point fund and are anticipated to grow from $5000 in '04 to well over $8000 in cash prizes for '05.
Hoosier Tire East is back on board as the Official SST Series premier sponsor. The Hoosier 10-70 remains the official tire and will be required for all SST tour events. Rick Kluth of 2Kwik Chassis supports the series again with a donation of a modified chassis to one of the top 15 series participants.

MERRITTVILLE: 2005 Season Opener Kicks Off Membership Rewards Programs
THROLD, ON - When Merrittville Speedway’s 2005 Season kicks off Saturday April 30th, several Driver Membership Rewards programs will also get their starts. Race fans can also look forward to quite a season as many new faces and some old familiar ones will be in competition weekly. “We’re really excited, “relates (GM) Erica Bicknell, adding “it’s been some time since there has been so many rookies through all divisions.”
2004 Sportsman Champion Adam Ferri will be contending for Rookie of the Year honours in the L.St.Amand Enterprises 358 Modifieds. Following Ferri to the premier division are Boyd McTavish and Greg Panunte who have competed at the top level in previous years.
Two veterans also returning to regular Saturday Night competition are Ken Cosgrove and Randy Chrysler, while Dan Miller will also be returning for the full season.
Miller’s old car will be in Sportsman competition all season with former kart racer Alan Sleight, one of the many up and coming drivers competing with the GM Crate Engine package. Other former karters joining the Sportsman ranks in 2005 include Nick Cupolo, Anthony Rizzardo, and Mat Williamson. Greg Ayers and Dave Dykstra have also made the jump to the Sportsman Division from the Hoosier Stocks.
The Seneca Niagara Casino Dwarf Car Division will also see a huge influx of new drivers with Paul Klager, Bruce Demers, Adam Murphy, Owen Steele and Tim Tallman among those expected to compete weekly.
With the whole season ahead of them, drivers in both the Original Pizza Logs Sportsmen and the L. St. Amand Enterprises 358 Modified Divisions will be striving to maintain a top 5 position in their respective division in a program that begins with the Hoosier Tire Canada Night.
At the 2005 Awards Banquet set for Saturday November 12th at Club Castropignano, the top 5 finishers in each division that hold a valid Merrittville Speedway Membership will be entered into a contingency program.
A similar contingency program in 2004 saw over $11,000 in prizes awarded to 10 drivers with veteran St. Catharines Sportsman driver Bill Willard awarded a 2005 Chassis, Body and Bumper Kit.
Another major program that launches with the 2005 Opener is the second season of the Hoosier Stock Division.
Hoosier Tire Canada joined Merrittville Speedway last season as the title sponsor of the former Street Stock division with a $2500.00 point fund posted. Mike Dooley’s first championship came in Hoosier’s first year as Title Sponsor.
Hoosier Stock drivers that have valid Merrittville Speedway Memberships and Perfect Attendance must also display Hoosier decals throughout the season.
The 2005 Hoosier Stock Point Champion will receive $750.00 among other awards at the Awards Banquet.
In 2004, Merrittville Speedway’s Stock Car divisions shared in a Membership Rewards program that totaled more than $83,000 in point fund, product and other prizes. Every indication is that that 2005’s program will surpass that figure.
The Hoosier Tire Canada Season Opener April 30th will feature the Hoosier Stocks and L. St. Amand 358 Modifieds in addition to the Original Pizza Logs Sportsmen, Seneca Niagara Casino Dwarf Cars and the 4 Cylinders. Gates open at 5:00 and Showtime is 7:00.

ROAD RACING: Travis Walker joins Kensai Racing for 2005
MISSISSAUGA, ON - Travis Walker, an 18-year old race driver from Mississauga Ontario has announced he will join Kensai Racing for 2005. “It’s really thrilling to be offered a seat on this team,” Walker said. “Kensai Racing is a top team, with great people and equipment. I am really happy to be driving for them.” Walker is scheduled to drive Kensai Racing’s new Acura RSX Type S in the FAQ Touring Hankook Championship in Quebec and will compete in several Grand-Am Cup races in the same car.
Ray Lee, Team Manager and Crew Chief for Kensai Racing is happy to have the dynamic young driver join their team. "Having Travis is a great addition to the Kensai Racing team. He had a great rookie season in Honda Michelin, along with a successful karting career. I think he has a bright future ahead of him," Lee said.
“It’s hard to find good young talent. I think he's a great fit with the team, he will bring youthfulness to our veteran driver lineup,” Lee added.
Walker is confident that he can win races in 2005, and Kensai is equally as confident as Lee pointed out. “Our goals are for him to win races in the FAQ Hankook Touring Championship. He’s heading to this series as the #1 driver for the Kensai Racing team. I am very confident we have driver, the team, and the car package to be successful in winning races in Quebec. As for Grand-Am Cup, Travis will run in a least three races this year, possibly more. I think the car will be competitive and possibly contending to win, but we understand this is a learning year for both the team and driver. We’re looking at 2006 to run the entire season of Grand-Am Cup.”

BARRIE, ON - Barrie Speedway is very proud to announce a new sponsorship arrangement with CARQUEST Auto Parts for the Late Model division.
Negotiations began in February and have culminated in not only the points fund sponsorship of the Barrie Late Models but a deal for two major nights of racing as well. CARQUEST will host the CASCAR Sportsman series August 13th as well as the final round of the immensely popular "Blue Jay Catering Big 3" Late Model series on September 10. Round Three of the Eastern States Rally Championship Promises Close Competition
MONTICELLO, NY - Rally New York, the third round of the 2005 Eastern States Rally Championship (ESRC), will take place this weekend on the gravel and tarmac roads of the Catskill Mountains outside of Monticello, New York.
The ESRC is the most competitive regional rally championship in North America covering a geographical area from Tennessee to New York.
With the Mid-Atlantic and New England states hosting the largest number of US licensed rally drivers nationally, Rally New York has attracted the cream of the crop for this event.
Over 40 teams are entered, with names like Burke, Lawless, Drislane and Donnelly. Competition should be close for this weekend's event.While the Seamus Burke driven Libra Racing Hyundai Tiburon is the fastest driver/car combination in the event, 2004 Rally New York winner John Drislane and co-driver Ronan Burke in their Mitsubishi Evo 6 will be right on the pace from the start.

While all Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT Series events and the best-five feature finishes at a driver's home track will determine the overall big-block Modified champion,
contenders in the 358-Modified, Sportsman and Pro Stock divisions will also need hometrack bonus points in their respective title quest. In addition, regional bonus points are also included for Sportsman and Pro Stock competitors.
Of the 26 DIRT MotorSports™ member tracks registered this season, only the following may serve as hometracks at which valuable points can be earned through Labor Day. And while each of the tracks listed below is DIRT-sanctioned, only those divisions specified by the individual track promoter may award bonus points in 2005.

WINGHAM, ON - Due to difficulties in finding a primary sponsor, the partnership in principle between Sipple Motorsports of Berea, Kentucky, and Bob Elliott’s Northern Force Racing of Wingham, Ontario, has been dissolved.
“It was my responsibility to find the backing and I was unsuccessful, stated Elliott. “We have some strong contacts for 2006 funding but nothing for the interim. We even tried offering primary status to some potential associate sponsors but nothing came together.”
Elliott also said that “Doc and Mike Sipple did their part by having the complete team along with show car in place and it’s a shame we couldn’t find the resources. The whole team got together in mid-February at the Sipple’s facility in Kentucky for a practice session and the camaraderie was wonderful. You couldn’t ask for nicer folks and I wish them well.”
As for Northern Force Racing www.northernforce.com and their plans to operate a Top Fuel team, Elliott had this to say: “My marketing and public relations group will go back to plan ‘A’ which is to secure enough funding to run our own team.”

CASCAR: Tara MacLeod to participate as a rookie on the CASCAR Super Series

TORONTO, ON – While everyone was thinking up April Fool’s pranks a few days ago, team driver Tara MacLeod was in Florida negotiating the details of her first major auto racing ride.
“This all happened really fast. One day I'm in Nashville and a few days later I'm in Florida, making the biggest deal of my life," stated an excited MacLeod, who lives in Innisfil, Ontario. “My head is still spinning.”
MacLeod has received major sponsorship from Central Merchant Services, Inc., a Florida-based credit card processing firm, and will compete in the CASCAR Super Series for stock car racing for 2005.
"We are excited about this move into the Canadian market," explained Kevin J. Pankow of Central Merchant Services. "I had an instant liking for Tara and her husband Dwayne. They make a great team off the track and I'm sure they'll make a great team on the track.” Central Merchant Services presently provides major sponsorship to ARCA RE/MAX Series (Automobile Racing Club of America) competitor Billy Venturini of North Carolina.
Under the team banner of MacLeod Racing, 32-year old Tara has been a strong competitor on the Ontario short-tracks, with several awards to her credit. She has always wanted to step up her racing career, and is very enthused about the coming 12-race CASCAR Super Series.

“This all happened really fast. One day I'm in Nashville and a few days later I'm in Florida, making the biggest deal of my life," stated an excited MacLeod, who lives in Innisfil, Ontario. “My head is still spinning.”
MacLeod has received major sponsorship from Central Merchant Services, Inc., a Florida-based credit card processing firm, and will compete in the CASCAR Super Series for stock car racing for 2005.
"We are excited about this move into the Canadian market," explained Kevin J. Pankow of Central Merchant Services. "I had an instant liking for Tara and her husband Dwayne. They make a great team off the track and I'm sure they'll make a great team on the track.” Central Merchant Services presently provides major sponsorship to ARCA RE/MAX Series (Automobile Racing Club of America) competitor Billy Venturini of North Carolina.
Under the team banner of MacLeod Racing, 32-year old Tara has been a strong competitor on the Ontario short-tracks, with several awards to her credit. She has always wanted to step up her racing career, and is very enthused about the coming 12-race CASCAR Super Series.
“I am so thrilled and excited Kevin stepped up to the plate,” she said. “I am going to make a strong attempt at CASCAR’s Rookie of the Year honors.”
MacLeod’s Ford Taurus race cars are being prepared by Micks Motorsports of Mt. Albert, Ontario, under the leadership of Kerry Micks, veteran CASCAR Super Series competitor known as “The Iron Man.”
She plans to compete in the entire coast-to-coast stock car series. “We're happy for Tara and her team. She's been looking for this for a long time. We're looking forward to working with her and coaching her through her first full season" said Micks.

Kawartha Speedway: "The tire situation at Kawartha Speedway has been decided upon and in co-operation with Peterborough, Sunset and Mosport Speedways, we will be using the Goodyear brand tire for our Limited Late Model and Thunder Car classes.
Goodyear has moved tire production back to North America and has promised a better quality tire with better selection and repeatability. The Late Models will be on the American Racer 10', same as last year. All tire pricing will be consistent between the four listed tracks. Tires should be available at the Speedway by the end of April. "

DIRT: Petrosino Wins Enduro Season-Opener At Cayuga County Fair Speedway

WEEDSPORT, N.Y. (April 10) – Bright, cloudless skies greeted the racers and fans on Sunday for the start of the 51st year of competitive auto racing at the Cayuga County Fair Speedway. So nice was the weather that the bright sunshine played havoc with the speedway causing heavy dust conditions at times during the open practice sessions.
On tap for the opener was practice for any and all racers along with a 100-lap Pick-N-Pull Enduro Championship. This would be the first of three planned Enduro Championships, augmenting the regular 4-cylinder Enduro division which starts weekly competition at the end of May. In the first special event, Tom Petrosino, from Auburn, NY, survived all 100 circuits to lap the entire field and take home the $1,000 first place money.
Forty Enduro cars and 50 race cars from six different classes were on hand, including those from the DIRT Modified, Sportsman, Pro Stock, Street Stock, Mini-Modified and Sprint Car divisions. Not all cars used their transponders yet those that did receive times for their laps.
Setting fast time of the day was DIRT MotorSports™ 'Elite 11' runner Gary Tomkins turning in a 16.556 second lap, 81.556 mph. Tomkins’ time came during the first practice session. Bob McCreadie set fast time in both the second and third practice sessions for the Modifieds, topping the second practice session with a lap of 18.828 second for a speed of 71.702 mph. Times fell off from the first session due to the slicker, dryer track conditions.
Other top DIRT Modified times were turned in by Alan Johnson, who steered the Thum Racing number 12T. Johnson turned in second fast time of the day with a 16.875 second lap, 80.000 mph. It was reported by Johnson that he would wheel the Thum big-block Modified each and every Sunday at Cayuga County. Also fast was Donnie Wetmore Jr. with a lap of 16.957, Jeff Brownell with a lap of 17.059 and Billy Dunn turning in a 17.206 second circuit.
In the Sportsman division Chris Higgins recorded the fastest lap with a 17.763 second effort in the first practice session. Only two of dozen Sportsman cars on hand were running transponders.
The start of the 100-lap Enduro spotlighted Mark Deland, from Auburn, NY and Bryan Randall from Waterloo, NY out front of the field that boasted 40 starters. Deland used his starting position to quickly jump into the lead with Fred Greule right on his rear bumper. Greule took the lead from Deland in a side-by-side battle on lap three although Deland fought back using lapped traffic to retake the front spot a lap later.
Greule was not long for the race, pitting within the next few laps. This pushed Greg Large from Auburn into second with Kelly Smith in third. Deland started to slow some on lap nine allowing Large to take the lead. Smith, who started to show his strength, passed Large for the lead two laps later on lap 11 and began to pull away from the rest of the field. Only Large seemed to be able to stay with Smith’s fast pace.
Large retook first on lap 16 with an inside move entering the third turn. Also on the charge was the number 32 driven by multi-time Enduro winner Greg DeChick. Deland gave up third to DeChick and quickly moved in on the leaders. Up front Smith pulled alongside of Large to regain the front spot on lap 19, making for five lead changes in just 20 laps.
Smith put his car on cruise control with DeChick running a solid second. On lap 33 hometown favorite Kirk Eckross from Weedsport was turned sideways exiting the fourth turn. Cars started to slam into the disabled Eckross machine forcing starter Dave Farney to throw the red flag. Caught up in this melee was second place runner DeChick as well as multi-time track Enduro winner Bill Werner.
When the field was given the green flag again it was Kelly Smith in first followed by Tom Petrosino and Wally Young from Penn Yan, NY. All looked well for Smith as he easily held off his closest competition until lap 47. At that time he made contact with the inside concrete wall in the first turn and came to a stop to put an abrupt halt to his afternoon agenda.
This put Petrosino into first-place and at this time only the leader and runner-up Young remained on the lead lap. Third-place runner Adam Keuer from Waterloo, who had started second to last in the field, was a lap down to the two leaders. Petrosino seemed to want to be the only car on the lead lap as he set out to lap Young.
On lap 70 Petrosino completed his mission passing Young to become the only car on the lead lap. Three laps later Young’s car seemed to slow dramatically while on lap 79 Keuer unlapped himself to Young and then passed him again to take second as lapped traffic remained heavy. Young turned his car pit-side on lap 83, out of the race for the time being.
Moving up from his last place starting spot, Josh St. Martin took over third and then passed Keuer for second. Up front, all Petrosino had to do was to stay out of trouble and keep plugging away as the laps clicked off.
The red flag flew for the second time in the event, this time on lap 87 as a number of cars piled up exiting the fourth turn. Caught up in this accident was third-place runner Keuer. Lenny Panagiotatos from Farmington was able to grab third following Keuer’s wreck.

St. Martin held on to second but was unable to catch the high-flying leader with Petrosino taking his first checkered flag and pocketing the $1,000 first-place check. “I had to dodge a lot of debris today,” Petrosino commented to announcer Doug Elkins in victory lane. “I just have to thank everyone who helped me get here this year.”

DRAGS: St. Thomas clean-up day a success
SPARTA, ON - Sunday’s track clean-up day was an unqualified success. Nearly 100 volunteers showed up to help in the annual spring cleaning. The weather was absolutely perfect and the track really came to life at about 2 p.m. with the new glue application. Many thanks to the many volunteers who helped.
This Saturday will be Chassis Inspection Day by Korey Herman, IHRA Inspector. Appointments are still being accepted. Sunday will be paint day with the gates opening at 9, free breakfast 10-11 and free test & tune for volunteers from 1-5.

Canadian GP link to Adscam mess
Interesting story in the Toronto Sun today. According to the report, the GP billed the sponsorship fund for 600 non-existant tickets to the Cdn. GP. Race promoter Normand Legault is set to take the stand this week.

JUSTICE JOHN Gomery will take his first bite out of a Liberal rainmaker this week when former PM Jean Chretien's golfing buddy makes an appearance before the AdScam inquiry. Jacques Corriveau is expected at the Gomery commission as early as Tuesday, where he will be grilled by lawyers on his dealings with Liberal-friendly ad firms and about his involvement in the scandal-plagued $250-million sponsorship program.
Tomorrow Gomery is expected to uncover where the 600 VIP Montreal Grand Prix tickets purchased through the sponsorship program went when he questions the event's owner, Normand Legault.
Legault will be accompanied by two Grand Prix staffers to explain what the federal government got for its money during the 1998 sponsorship of the popular car race, and how much federal funds the event received.
A Gomery official suggested that the feds never got the 600 tickets they paid for -- that, in fact, those seats had already been sold to race-car fans.
The official said the 600 tickets billed to taxpayers could have been included in a dummy invoice sent to public works to bilk taxpayers through the sponsorships.
Legault was also responsible for getting racing star Jacques Villeneuve to autograph a racer's hood for Groupaction Marketing founder Jean Brault. "

Tomorrow Gomery is expected to uncover where the 600 VIP Montreal Grand Prix tickets purchased through the sponsorship program went when he questions the event's owner, Normand Legault.
Legault will be accompanied by two Grand Prix staffers to explain what the federal government got for its money during the 1998 sponsorship of the popular car race, and how much federal funds the event received.
A Gomery official suggested that the feds never got the 600 tickets they paid for -- that, in fact, those seats had already been sold to race-car fans.
The official said the 600 tickets billed to taxpayers could have been included in a dummy invoice sent to public works to bilk taxpayers through the sponsorships.
Legault was also responsible for getting racing star Jacques Villeneuve to autograph a racer's hood for Groupaction Marketing founder Jean Brault. "
