COMPASS360 SHOOTS FOR ANOTHER STRONG FINISH AT LAGUNA

Monterey, CA -- Compass360 Racing's Toronto-based crew has hauled the team's three Honda Civic Si's across the country to the beautiful Laguna Seca track nestled on the picturesque Monterey peninsula of Northern California. Hoping to continue their strong 2009, C360R has assembled another impressive driver line-up.

Californian Christian Miller, who lives an hour away in downtown San Jose, is looking to notch his third straight first-place finish in the 034 Motorsport / Skunk2 / C360R #74 Honda. With Miller's regular co- driver, Randy Pobst, competing across the continent at Mosport this weekend, the team drafted 2008 KONI Street Tuner Champion Jamie Holtom for the task of helping Miller to stay at the front of the Driver's Championship.
Although this race marks Holtom's first race of 2009, he tested with the team in the fall of 2008. The Laguna race marks his first time competing in a Civic. "I've raced against these Hondas for so many years, I'm looking forward to trying one on for size," laughed Holtom.

Holtom is no stranger to two other members of the C360R, having competed with them in go karts for many years before they all graduated to sports cars in the KONI Challenge. Matt Pritiko and Travis Walker will once again share the CanadianRacers.com / Skunk2 / C360R #74 car. After two podium finishes in the first three races, the young duo look to solidify a place at the top of the Championship, currently sitting in 5th place.

"It really is an important weekend for us in the points," Pritiko said. "With another good finish, we can be right in thick of the championship hunt. I know the Compass360 guys will have all three cars prepared really well, and I am looking forward to an exciting weekend of racing."

New to the team is Bret Spaude, who will co-drive with Team Owner Karl Thomson in the Skunk2 / K&N / C360R #75 Civic. Spaude is competing with rival Bill Fenton's team, but will race with Compass360 for those events that Fenton does not attend this year, as he is in contention for the Mesco Rookie of the Year. "With Bill sitting this race out, it made sense to drive with Karl and Compass360," noted Spaude. "After seeing them make history by putting three cars on the podium at New Jersey I'm looking to notch a good result here at Laguna."

Miller is equally excited. "This being a home race, we've got lots of friends and family out to entertain our sponsors. We're obviously working hard to finish first for them."

"We're doing our best to put together strong driver line-ups in each of our cars," remarked Thomson, who finished first at Laguna in 2007.

"We pulled off a miracle in New Jersey, and I doubt we'll ever see a dream result like that again very soon, if ever. But I think we've got an equally strong group for Laguna, and we're excited to race on Saturday."

The KONI Challenge race starts at 3:00pm on Saturday, May 16th, and will be televised tape-delayed on SPEED on May 23rd at 12:00 noon.

Ontario Formula Ford: Stefan Rzadzinski Mosport Report

Stefan Rzadzinski debuted in his first formula car racing weekend at the Mosport International Raceway. Stepping into his #2 Brian Graham Racing Formula Ford for the first time on Friday morning, Rzadzinski took to the historic course. Developing an understanding for the car and circuit, Stefan consistently gained time throughout the 4 practice sessions.

On Saturday, progression made during practice had to be attuned once again. Weather was threatening following a damp morning warm up session, and by qualifying a torrential downpour hit the Formula Ford lineup as they were sitting on the grid.

As the field took to the track, Rzadzinski continually gained speed and confidence throughout the session, coming to grips with the wet circuit. Rzadzinski placed 4th in the session and was sitting on the outside of the 2nd row for Race 1 of the Ontario Formula Ford Challenge Series. Being slightly cautious with the conditions, Rzadzinski dropped a few positions in the opening lap.

However as he regained assurance with the grip available, Stefan worked his way up into 3rd position. A few laps later Rzadzinski’s day very nearly finished as he lost grip on a slick part of the already drenched circuit. Stefan managed to prevent the car from stalling in his spin and retook to the track, only losing one position. 2 laps later he salvaged the final podium position and sustained it as a safety car was deployed due to incidents around the course. The race concluded under the safety car and Rzadzinski finished 3rd in his formula car debut.

Sunday brought sunny skies and another completely different challenge for Rzadzinski. Putting his car 3rd in the dry qualifying session, the 16 year old Edmontonian placed himself in position for another great run. The race commenced and Rzadzinski lost a position heading into corner 2.

However, this initiated a great battle for 3rd position with fellow combatant Dan Burchill. Throughout the race, the position was traded multiple times and the 2 cars were running nose to tail. It was only in the final few laps of the race where Rzadzinski pulled out a few car lengths and once again finished in 3rd position, completing the double podium in his open wheel racing debut.

“I am very pleased with the way this weekend went. It is fantastic to get a double podium in my first formula car event. Brian Graham Racing is a top level team and their assistance in the transition from karts to cars was extremely valuable. Without The ABL Group, SuperTint, AMSOIL/SyntheticLubricants.ca and all of my supporters, this event would not have been possible. I look forward to the rest of the season and will resume to focus on developing as a young driver.” stated Rzadzinski.

Stefan will continue his pursuit of the 2009 Ontario Formula Ford Challenge Series with Brian Graham Racing on May 29-31 at Shannonville Motorsports Park. Competing this season with support of The ABL Group, SuperTint and AMSOIL/SyntheticLubricants.ca, Rzadzinski is actively pursuing partners to complete his inaugural formula car season. On board race video sponsored by CRGWest.ca is available on www.rzadracing.com under the "Video" section.

Delaware Speedway Insider... May 15-16 preview

Delaware Speedway Insider: WHELEN ENGINEERING NIGHT
Race Date: May 15, 2009 & May 16, 2009

Mother Nature Doesn't Dampen Delaware's Drive

While Mother Nature has prevented Delaware Speedway from dropping a checker flag on any weekly division feature races so far this season, it has not dampened spirits at Delaware Speedway! Fans, drivers and officials have never been so energized about programs at the speedway. This weekend, officials plan to hit the ground running again with an exciting line-up of racing that features Canada’s finest weekly racing program on Friday, and the Transmission Direct Enduro and Ultimate Sandblasting and Coating Chaos Cars on Saturday afternoon.

Fans have a lot to be excited about this Friday night. The historic speedway renovation project has continued aggressively throughout the rainouts. This week fans will get their chance to see the latest round of upgrades. The first of which is the first use of the racetrack since the historic repaving project began this past Saturday. The initial repave has seen large sections of the speedway replaced with new asphalt. The second is the highly anticipated activation of the new sound system at the track.

The line-up for the evening itself aims to finish races already begun in the rain, and to run races already scheduled to be run that night.

With the rainfall putting a stop to the racing program last week, the APC Late Model division sits frozen four laps into a great race. Thirty drivers descended on Delaware Speedway to run in the opener for the first stage of the J.B.M. Auto Leasing Triple Crown. This race will be completed first thing Friday night at 8:00 pm. The APC Late Models will see further action in the evening when their field runs their originally scheduled 35-lap feature race. The field will be set based the finish of the J.B.M. Auto Leasing Triple crown race with an eight car inversion plus the roll of one dice.

The POWERADE Open-Wheel Modifieds will also be hitting the track on Friday. Last week before the rain came, the division completed qualifying for a 25-lap feature race. This race will be run second on the evening. Later in the program they will run their originally scheduled 25-lap event lined up based on a two-dice inversion of the finish of the first race.

The Delaware Super Stocks have not yet had a race event this season. They will be running heats and a 25-lap feature race. Their rained out program for opening night will be filled later in the season.

The entire evening finishes with a Throne King’s of the Hill Spectator race. The event is for street legal, street driven vehicles to compete in one-on-one drag races around the half-mile speedway. The winner of the event will be receiving a $500 prize. Don’t forget to bring a helmet and proof of ownership and remember; only the first 40 cars will be accepted, so register early!

Gates open at 6:00 pm, racing gets underway at 8:00 pm. The wildly popular “toonie hotdog” deal will be in place from 6:00-7:00 pm. Be sure to arrive early and pick out your favourite seat and take advantage of this offer. On Saturday gates for the Transmission Direct Enduro and Ultimate Sandblasting and Coating Chaos Cars open at 1:00 pm, racing starts at 2:00 pm.
Click here for full speedway schedule!

What about my rainout ticket from last week???

The speedway has elected to allow those rainout tickets to be used at full value - - this means that you can redeem that ticket at the front gate for a new one this week! Don't forget to take a moment to review the track's rainout policy. It's a great night to bring someone new to experience the NEW Delaware Speedway!

Still loving those new hotdogs...

Toonie hotdogs will be available through the main concession stand from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm! Arrive early, find your favourite spot on the hill and head over to the new concession stand and try our brand new hotdogs!

So what is new this week in the renovation?
New pavement, new sounds system, new ticket system!
This week is the debut of several more renovation improvements! As well as the obvious fresh pavement, fans will be experiencing two additonal exciting upgrades: the new sound system and new ticketing system! Click here to see new photos from the renovation! (Caution, large photos)

NASCAR Canadian Tire Series Racers Show Their Stuff in Pre-Season Test at Kawartha Speedway

By Jim Clarke, Kawartha Speedway PR/Clarke Motorsports Communications

For the last 2 years, Kawartha Speedway has played host to the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series championship clinching event.  In 2007, JR Fitzpatrick earned the title in a thrilling 250 lap showdown.  Last year, it was Scott Steckly’s turn to lay claim to the king’s crown, in a rain-shortened show.  Again this year, the 3/8th mile oval at Fraserville, Ontario will wrap-up the year on Canada’s only national stock car racing tour with a 250 lap shootout Saturday, September 26th.  Wednesday, May 13th the track welcomed close to a dozen of the country’s best runners for a day-long test session.

Bright, sunny conditions with a brisk breeze gave the drivers and teams a chance to experience a variety of track conditions.  The Snap-On Tools #3 of 2008 race winner Jason Hathaway was the first to arrive, followed by the #77 Dodge Avenger, driven by Kawartha’s General Manager/Promoter Derek Lynch.  After that, the infield pit area filled quickly as a variety of teams took advantage of an opportunity to put their machines to their paces on the country’s premier stock car racing facility.

The entire test session was incident-free, with teams filling their notebooks and laptops with useful data.  Springs and shocks were swapped.  Air pressures adjusted and tire stagger changed – all in the hope of gaining a slight advantage when the green flag drops to open the 2009 season – Saturday, May 23rd at Autodrome St. Eustache.

For details on the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series schedule, follow the link at www.nascarlocalracing.com.  Learn more about Kawartha Speedway by visiting www.kawarthaspeedway.com.

#3).  DJ Kennington’s young team mate Joey Hanssen turned his first ever Kawartha Speedway laps during the pre-season test Wednesday, May 13th.

Inside Track NASCAR Columnist Ernie Saxton honoured with Leonard J. Sammons Jr. Memorial Award

Northeast Hall Of Fame Honors Public Relations Specialist Ernie Saxton

Weedsport, NY – May 12, 2009 – By Herb Anastor, Northeast Modified Hall of Fame Selection Committee

Nationally recognized public relations, motorsports marketing and promotions specialist Ernie Saxton has been named recipient of the 2009 Leonard J. Sammons Jr. Memorial Award which recognizes outstanding contributions to auto racing. Saxton will be honored when the 18th annual Northeast Modified Hall of Fame driver inductions and special award ceremonies take place Sunday, May 24 on the Cayuga County Fairgrounds in conjunction with the annual Memorial Day Weekend holiday show at the adjacent speedway.

When it was first announced that Saxton was to receive the Sammons Award, being surprised was just one of the emotions that he felt.

"I am humbled to have been selected for this award," said the 67-year-old publisher of the highly-regarded Motorsports Sponsorship Marketing News upon being told of this honor. "After writing so many columns and articles and working for so many speedways and organizations, I still enjoy what I do. And as long as my health holds out, I plan to continue doing this, although I might phase a few things out in the years to come. But I am really looking forward to the activities at Weedsport."

Saxton has a long history in the professional business world of motorsports. But just like anyone else, his first involvement with racing came as a fan. As a kid growing up in the 1950s, he enjoyed the excitement of open-wheel racing. He went to local tracks – including the legendary Langhorne (Pa.) Speedway – and soon began to follow one of the big stars of that era, Johnny Thomson.

Saxton liked the way that "The Flying Scot" handled himself on and off the race track so much that he organized and became the president of the Johnny Thomson Fan Club, and he had fun running the fan club and watching his favorite driver race. But after Thomson was killed in a Sprint Car race in September of 1960 at Pennsylvania's Allentown Fair, he looked around for another way to stay involved in the sport that he loved.

For a short time, he took on the duties of a racing photographer. But the proximity of the cars whizzing by him as he tried to capture their images caused him to rethink that idea and he turned to writing. And that change proved to be the perfect fit.

In the mid-1960s, Saxton began writing for the old Illustrated Speedway News and even as the youngest columnist on that staff he was trying to improve the working conditions of those who covered racing. It was because of this that in 1969 he, Al Consoli, John Ernesto and Red Kirsch founded the Eastern Motorsport Press Association.

The goal of EMPA was "to bring about a better understanding of the sport and to bring more professionalism to the coverage of motorsports" and through his long tenure as the EMPA president – a position that he will relinquish at the end of this year – Saxton has worked tirelessly in that behalf. But he has also helped the media to gain increased access to the valuable information that is supplied by promoters and racers, and he was instrumental in the establishment of a press release format that is widely used today.

Prior to opening his Langhorne-based Ernie Saxton Communications business in 1989, he got a closer look at the automotive industry during his 13 years as the Manager of Marketing and Advertising at the Chilton Book Company. And the relationships that he developed then and since have enticed many of the top personalities in racing to come to the annual EMPA Convention and give attendees a unique and insightful look into the business of motorsports.

A columnist with Area Auto Racing News for some 28 years, Saxton has written or still writes for such varied publications as the Bucks County Courier Times, Inside Track Motorsports News, Stock Car Racing, NASCAR Magazine, Speedway Illustrated and National Dragster.

The director of public relations and communications at Grandview Speedway in Bechtelsville, Pa., for 43 years, Saxton also served in that capacity at New Jersey's Bridgeport and Trenton International Speedways, and he was the press liaison for six years at Pennsylvania's Pocono International Raceway.

Saxton's résumé lists the position of public relations director for the United Racing Club, American Racing Drivers Club and American Three-Quarter Midget Racing Association; once handling those three jobs all at the same time. And he has also been a regular contributor and/or host on auto racing programs that were broadcast to local and regional radio markets.

The public at-large also got a different look at this man of many talents from 1986 until just a couple of years ago when he served as the popular MC for the "Ms. Motorsports Contest" at the annual Len Sammons Motorsports Auto Racing & Trade Show. But due to other mounting duties at the show – which include the coordination of the event's "Promoters Summit" – he was forced to relinquish that enviable position to DIRTcar television host Shane Andrews.

It's obvious to see that Saxton is the type of person who gets things done. He is also someone who is never hesitant to speak his mind and that has sometimes made him controversial. Yet, the focus of what he has written or said has always been on what is good for racing and some of his previously criticized ideas and opinions are now widely accepted.

As an announcer, he has worked at 174 tracks across the country. He has been behind the microphone at Grandview for 41 years and also called the racing action at such unique locations as the old Ascot Park in California, New York City's Madison Square Garden, the old John F. Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia, and the Scope Arena in Norfolk, Virginia.

As a writer, Saxton brings clear thought to his columns and an interesting slant to his stories. And, as an authority on public relations, marketing, sponsorship and the business aspects of racing, he champions the idea of seeing that everyone -- from fans, competitors and sponsors to the race tracks themselves-- gets the best value for the money, time and effort that they have put into the sport.

At the upcoming ceremonies later this month you can be sure that Ernie Saxton will acknowledge the help that his wife Marilyn has given him over the years.  And their relationship in this light is well-known throughout the racing community. But so is his leadership in motorsports and he is well-deserving of this singular recognition.

ACT TOUR: Memorial Day at Thunder Road

Waterbury, VT – Teams from all over New England will celebrate Memorial Day weekend at Thunder Road in Barre, Vermont for the traditional running of the Mekkelsen RV Memorial Day Classic Doubleheader. It is the only time in 2009 when fans can see the stars from both the American Canadian Tour (ACT) Late Models and the open wheel ground-pounding monsters from the True Value Modified Racing Series racing together on one card.

American Canadian Tour point leader Scott Payea watched the heavyweight fight between Randy Potter of Groveton, New Hampshire and Brad Leighton of Center Harbor, New Hampshire at Airborne last Sunday. Potter and Leighton punched and counter-punched for over 90 laps of what was a classic 35th Furniture World of Vermont Spring Green battle royal on the fast, newly renovated Airborne Speedway half mile.

“I watched them swap leads, bang doors, beat on each other for most of the race. It was great! I had the best seat in the house, and should have bought a ticket. It really was like a pair of heavy-weight prizefighters softening each other up in the early rounds. I thought about watching the end of the fight to see who was going to win, but fortunately I had some car left to slide past them with 5 laps to go. Loved the new track, and for me, it was special to win at Airborne. Now I need one more spot than last year at Thunder Road in the Memorial Day Classic to keep my momentum going,” said Payea. Payea finished second to John Donahue of Graniteville, VT in the Mekkelsen Memorial Day Classic one year ago.

Late Model and Modified champions from every state in New England and two provinces of Canada will converge on the “Nation’s Site of Excitement” for the second annual Memorial Day Classic Doubleheader. Kirk Alexander of Swanzy, NH, the multi-time True Value Modified Champion, was masterful in a late charge to take the inaugural event. The Jarvis brothers, Dwight and Peter from Ascutney, VT, finished second and third respectively. “I really enjoyed the race at T-Road last May. It is a tough place to get around, but once I figured out not to think about that wall in turn 4, things improved a whole lot. Now I have to get from second to first this year,” said Dwight Jarvis.

The Late Model contingent will have the best of the ACT TOUR along with a host of Thunder Road regular racers at this year’s Late Model portion of the Classic. Defending Thunder Road Champion, Eric Williams from Hyde Park, VT will try for two-in-a-row after winning Thunder Road’s Merchants Bank 150 opening day. Cris Michaud will be in the R&D Ford trying to be the first Ford in the history of the ACT Late Model Tour to win in a Ford crate motor.

Joey Polewarczyk, Jr., the young superstar from Hudson, New Hampshire said, “I am ready to win at Thunder Road. I have such a love – hate relationship with that track. I used to wreck in turn 4 when I first started going up there---every time!  I think I have that figured out and have won poles for the Chittenden Milk Bowl races, but I have not been able to string together three good segments in those races. During practice I am as fast as the regular T-Road guys, now I want to win there as much as any place. I know I can. I love the place with all the fans and all the history, and I want to be in the history books. I feel really good about our chances in this year’s Memorial Day Classic”.

Fans will see lots of tributes to the past 50 years of racing at Thunder Road when they arrive on top of Quarry Hill for the Memorial Day weekend. Camping will open at noon on Friday, May 22. Thunder Road support divisions will qualify on Saturday afternoon, May 23rd, and then the pit gates open for the Late Models and Modifieds on Sunday, May 24 at 8:00. Front gates will open for fans at 10:00. Post time is 1:30. Admission for the Twin 100 Double Feature Mekkelsen Memorial Day Classic will be $20 Adult; $5 for children (6-12); and $40 for a family of four.

Tickets will be on sale for the June 25th CARQUEST Governor’s Cup 150, featuring NASCAR’s Tony Stewart in a Joey Pole Racing (JPR) prepared race car beginning Sunday at Thunder Road. Advanced tickets for the Governor’s Cup will be $17 for Adults in advance, $20 day of race, and $3 for children 6-12.

The next event on the ACT Tour is this Sunday afternoon at the Oxford Plains Speedway in Oxford Maine. The New England Dodge Dealers 150 is expected to draw nearly 50 teams to the famous speedway, as it is the only appearance for the Late Models before the TD Bank 250 in July. Post time is 2:00.

For additional information contact the Thunder Road office at 802.244.6963 or media@acttour.com.

Jacques Villeneuve turns some laps in a NASCAR Canadian Tire Series car at Autodrome St-Eustache

Just weeks prior to the start of the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series, at Montreal's Autodrome St-Eustache, Jacques Villeneuve jumped behind the wheel of Dave Jacombs' #7 to turn a few laps in a stock car at the flat, 4/10-mile oval.

The outing was nothing serious, according to JV, who drove the car in running shoes while sitting on a pillow!

Those hoping to see Villeneuve in action at the May 23 NCATS opener will have to wait for another opportunity as he's planning to be in Europe on that date. 2007 NCATS champ Andrew Ranger appears with Jacques in some of the shots.

Thanks to JV for the use of the photos!

NASCAR CANADIAN TIRE SERIES: Harvick driver Cale Gale to drive for new Farwell Racing Inc. team

Waterdown, Ont. - Canadian NASCAR fans won't have to cross any international borders to watch Kevin Harvick Inc.'s (KHI) exciting young driver, Cale Gale, this season as Farwell Racing Inc (FRI) announced today that Gale will drive the all new No. 13 Rheem Chevrolet Impala for much of the 2009 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series season.

The 24-year-old driver, named after NASCAR legend Cale Yarborough, from Mobile, Ala. is currently under contract with KHI and spends time behind the wheel of KHI's No. 33 Rheem Chevrolet.

"Cale is a very talented young driver who needs seat time," said Kevin Harvick, KHI co-owner and Sprint Cup driver, "when FRI approached us with the opportunity for Cale to drive for them, we saw it as a win, win."

Gale is unable to commit to FRI's entire 2009 schedule and will miss FRI's season opener at Delaware Speedway on June 6 as he is already committed to drive the No. 33 Rheem Chevrolet for KHI in the Nationwide Series race the same day in Nashville, Ten.

"I'm really excited to drive for FRI and Rheem in the Canadian Tire Series and in front of the Canadian fans," Gale said.  "From what I have been told, there are a lot of great drivers in this series and I look forward to competing with them.  I grew up driving on short tracks, so it will be great to get back on them.  I'm also looking forward to gaining more experience on Canada's challenging road courses."

None of this could be possible without corporate support and FRI is well on their way with the announcement of their primary sponsor, Rheem Canada Ltd.  "We have seen the success a good race program can have in the United States and we are excited to implement a similar motorsports program in Canada," Rheem Canada General Manager, Dave McPherson remarked.  "Our sponsorship of the No. 13 car is more than a rolling billboard, it is a well-designed marketing program and we believe FRI is the company and team that will enable us to implement that program successfully."

New to motorsports team ownership, FRI co-owner, Stewart Farwell, is very excited for his new venture with his youngest son Matthew, "Matthew and I are passionate about racing, but this is more than just a hobby for us, this is business.  We see racing as a great marketing vehicle and, therefore, our approach will probably differ from the norm."

The Farwell's have wanted to get involved in the Canadian NASCAR series for some time, but weren't sure when or how it would happen, the answer was delivered one morning last August in a Globe and Mail article entitled, Lightning's Last Dance.  After reading the article and meeting with Lightning's owner, Rob McConnell, Farwell knew he had found his car, team, crew chief and partner.  And Rob McConnell couldn't be happier to partner with the Farwell's, "I thought we were done before that phone call last fall.  Stewart and Matthew have given Lightning's team an encore and we are very excited."

FRI will run a shortened season in 2009 with plans to compete in the full series in 2010, "we want to walk before we run and do it right" Farwell stated.  Catch the No. 13 Rheem car debut at Delaware Speedway on June 6, with Lightning's trademark driver, Nik Lapcevich behind the wheel.
MEDIA ADVISORY:

To schedule one on one telephone interviews with Cale Gale, Rheem's Paul Gharghoury and/or FRI's Stewart Farwell, please contact E.J. Lewick by email at ejlewick@farwellracing.com or by phone at 905-330-4011.

Ohsweken Speedway set for season opener this Friday (May 15)

By Tommy Goudge (May 13, 2009) – More than seven long months have passed since Wayne Johnson won the Canadian Sprint Car Nationals, ending the inaugural season for the Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Car division at Ohsweken Speedway.  This Friday, May 15, Corr/Pak is also the presenting sponsor for the fourteenth annual opening night at Ohsweken, featuring the Corr/Pak Sprint Cars, ESSO Thunder Stocks, ESSO Mini Stocks, and Bombers!

The first season for the Corr/Pak Sprint Cars at Ohsweken was a successful one, with great racing and good car counts at each event.  Continued growth is expected in the division this season, with at least five drivers already registered to compete for the Rookie of the Year title this season, including Kevin Loveys, Wayne Ashton, Jim Huppunen, Travis Cunningham, and Jason Martin.  Joining those rookies are plenty of established drivers such as track champion Keith Dempster, ’08 rookie of the year Ryan Hunsinger, Kevin Job, Glenn Styres, Mikey Kruchka, Tom Huppunen, Dave Dykstra, and many more!

The ESSO Thunder Stocks division grew by leaps and bounds last season.  Large and competitive fields are expected again this season featuring the likes of Glen Leinen, Rob Disher, Mike Thorne, Chris Dickie, Mark Saul, Jamie Cox, Brad Herron, and a host of others.  One name no longer found in the division is that of 2008 track champion Cody McPherson, who has continued his climb up the racing ladder to the DIRT Sportsman tour.  Replacing him behind the wheel of the Mikey Granton-owned machine - this year re-numbered 88 - is Shayne Pierce who already has a feature win at Humberstone to his credit this season.

In ESSO Mini-Stock competition, Abel Castelein is once again the driver to beat.  Coming off his second consecutive track title, Castelein won’t lack for competition as he tries for an unprecedented third championship in a row, as drivers like Mitchell Brown, ’05 champ Rick Emberson, Mike Evers, Kevin Hilborn, the Hess team, and many more will try to knock him off the top of the heap.

Another new addition in 2008, the Fun Stocks return to Ohsweken with a new name this season.  Now known as the Bombers, the division continues to be an affordable and fun entry level option, with some surprises in store for fans and drivers alike.  Lee Hils became the first champion of the division last season and will return to defend his crown in 2009.

Ohsweken Speedway's Friday Night Thunder kicks off this Friday, May 15 when Corr/Pak Merchandising presents the Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Cars, ESSO Thunder Stocks, ESSO Mini-Stocks, and Bombers. Friday Night Thunder at Ohsweken offers affordable exciting family entertainment just a short drive away from most Mid-Western Ontario locations. Friday Night Thunder Adult General Admission is $10, while Seniors and Students are $8, and Kids age 12 and under are FREE! Please visit www.OhswekenSpeedway.com for more information. Spectator gates open @ 6:00p.m., with the first race taking the green flag at 7:45p.m. this Friday, May 15!

Mosport Speedway kicks off its 2009 season this Saturday

(BOWMANVILLE, ON – May 13, 2009) Canada’s Fastest Half Mile Oval, Mosport Speedway, will be alive with the sounds of roaring stock car engines this Saturday night when the Auto Workers Community Credit Union Saturday Night Racing presented by PartSource kicks off its 2009 season.

Three of Mosport’s four home grown classes are in action at Coca-Cola Opening Night, with new rules, new names and bigger purses. The biggest changes are evident within the Bob’s Towing Sportsman division (formerly ThunderCars), which has opened up the rules to allow more eligible cars, which should result in bigger fields and lots of close, exciting racing.

The Late Model class (which has dropped the “Limited” from its moniker) has introduced a significant rule change this season that will allow teams to use a crate engine from General Motors by mid-season. A key benefit of this change is a much more cost-effective engine program for the racers. Late Models using this new crate engine will also be given a 100 pound weight break, which should encourage more teams to use it as an alternative.

The THORSONS EVT 6 or Less class, the most affordable form of stock car racing at Mosport, returns relatively unchanged, featuring a large field of drivers, including defending champion Ryan Oosterholt, a 17-year old from Blackstock, ON.

The R.P. Oil Modified division (their season kick-off is in two weeks) has also undergone some major rule changes during the off-season. This year, teams are permitted to change the appearance of the car with the addition of front fenders and a full front bumper cover and is sure bring in new challengers for two-time defending champion, Jim Rossiter.

In addition to the four home-grown classes, Mosport Speedway will feature a host of visiting specials in 2009, headlined by the return of the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series on Aug. 8 for the Mosport Speedway 200. Featuring many of Canada’s finest stock car talent, such as 2007 champion Andrew Ranger, defending title-holder Scott Steckly and perennial contenders D.J. Kennington and Dave Whitlock, the Mosport Speedway 200 provides a gruelling test of skill and race strategy.

Other fan favourites will include stops by the Lucas Oil Sportsman Cup (June 13), the OSCAAR Super Late Models (July 11 and Aug. 22), and the Ontario Legends cars (May 30, June 20 and July 25).

On top of all the great racing lined up for 2009, the Speedway will once again give its fans the chance to feel like a real racer on the famous half-mile every week, with the Old Dutch Snacks King of the Hill competition. Using their own street cars, fans race two at a time around the Speedway for one lap, with the winner moving on until the evening’s “King of the Hill” champion is crowned.

Two Fan Appreciation Nights are on the schedule, at the midpoint and season’s end (July 4th and Sept.12th). One of the Speedway’s most popular nights, Fan Appreciation allow teams and drivers to acknowledge the fans by bringing lining their race cars on the front straight and inviting spectators to join them. Pictures and autographs are available and kids take home huge bags full of candy and other goodies given away by the teams.

Tickets for the Auto Workers Community Credit Union Saturday Night Racing presented by PartSource are available at the Speedway’s front gate. Prices are $13 for adults, $8 for youth 13-16 and kids 12 and under are free. The gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the racing starts at 6:30 p.m., except on Fan Appreciation nights which begin at 6 p.m.

Advance tickets for the Mosport Speedway 200 are $25 until Aug. 5 and are available through the Mosport Hotline at (905) 983-9141(Monday to Friday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm ET) online at www.mosport.com and through Ticketmaster.

Kawartha Speedway: Stormin' Norman Mayhew - Taking What He's Got and Doing What it Takes

By Jim Clarke, Clarke Motorsports Communications

Norm Mayhew is an easy man to please.  He loves going fast and his weapon of choice is a late model stock car at Kawartha Speedway.  The 28 year-old from Cobourg, Ontario – tagged with the nickname “Stormin’ Norman” by a former high school teacher – thrives on the action at the 3/8th mile oval and does everything in his power to make sure his #60 Northumberland County Moving Company/Only Solutions/Mayhew Graphics Ford Fusion machine is ready to hit the raceway.

Mayhew and his race day crew – crew chief Colin Mackenzie, marketing guru Andre Arff, spotter Paul Devlin and housing/logistics manager Rob Valois – go over their machine after every show.  Even the driver’s mother, Royanne Mayhew gets involved with the car preparation.  Mayhew says his mother gets right in there and getting her hands dirty alongside the other members of the team.

“My mom can often be seen with a wrench in her hand,” says Mayhew.  “She’s been around the sport for a number of years – helping on my car and my father’s.  She knows as much as most of the crew guys in the pits at Kawartha or any other track.”

When he’s not at the track, Mayhew enjoys snowboarding, hockey and mountain biking.  He’s also quick to acknowledge the constant support of his girlfriend, Sheena.

“She’s very supportive of everything I do,” he says with a smile.  “My commercial sign-making shop Mayhew Graphics is incredibly busy, especially in the weeks leading-up to the start of racing season.  Sheena keeps things organized and helps me stay focused to get things done around the business and with the race team.  I owe her a lot of thanks and really appreciate everything she does to make sure we don’t fall behind with the important things we do every day.”

After a rough couple of years – 10th in points for 2007 and 8th in 2008 – Mayhew has decided to trade his familiar black and green paint scheme for brand new look.

“We seemed to have trouble staying out of trouble,” Stormin’ Norman admits.  “Whether we got caught-up in someone else’s wreck, or involved other racers in incidents we caused, it was time to change the look of the car.  We experimented with some different designs during the off season, but finally decided to swap the black and green paint scheme for a predominately red car, with black and white accents.  The car was very well received at the promotional shows we did during April, so I’m confident we made the right choice.”

In addition to getting his own car ready for the season he also designed and printed graphics and paint schemes for a number of other drivers including Willie Reyns, Ryan Kimball, Dave Morgan and his father, Steve Mayhew.  As a way to say ‘thanks’, Steve will put Norm in one of his Thunder Car machines for a few starts at Kawartha this season.  Kawartha-Durham Kart Club racers Bailey and Mason Brown – children of Kawartha late model runner Linc Brown – and Mayhew’s cousin Danny Benedict also had the racer prepare their designs for the 2009 season.

Mayhew plans to take the equipment he’s got and do whatever it takes to get to the front of the pack at Kawartha Speedway.

Merrittville Speedway: Holiday Doubleheader this weekend

Thorold, Ontario - The first holiday doubleheader of 2009 is coming up quickly on Merrittville Speedway’s 58th Anniversary Schedule. When the gates open for the Seaway Mall Rankin Cancer Run Night – Saturday May 16th – the schedule that race fans and race teams saw for the first time at the Race Car Show at the Niagara Street Shopping Destination in Welland has changed due to delayed events from the 2nd Annual Spring Sizzler April 25th.

With the BRP Can Am Late Models in the spotlight in their only 2009 visit, the Modern Corporation Open Wheel Lites will also be featured with their regularly scheduled event in addition to the delayed 25 lap Stars North Mod Lite Tour. Adding to the show will be three Lucas Oil Weekly Racing Series Divisions – the Original Pizza Logs Sportsman, Hoosier Stocks and the Turn 4 Collision 4 Cylinders.

The L. St. Amand Enterprises 358 Modifieds will be preparing for their Monday Night Madness Event hosted by Zavitz Financial Strategies and Employee Benefits that has it’s schedule changed too. In addition to the start of the 2009 Lucas Oil Shoot Out by dirttrackdigest.com – the rain-delayed $ 4000.00 To WIN 358 Modified Super DIRTcar Series Event  from April 25th will join the May 18th Card for Twin 50 lap Events.

The Saturday and Monday events will provide a full menu of great racing action.

“Race fans will sure get their racing fixes over the Holiday Weekend,” relates (Merrittville GM) Erica Bicknell, “with the original schedule … and what we have had to add … it will be quite a doubleheader with some must see events both nights!”

Merrittville Speedway made a return to the Seaway Mall in March leading up to the 2009 Season and one car on display that drew lots of attention was the BRP Can Am Late Model of former Merrittville Pro Stock star Rick Baker.

Baker is expected to be in the field when the 2009 BRP Can Am Late Model Series opens at Merrittville after a recent non-point event at the Black Rock Speedway that saw rookie Greg Galligan in Victory Lane when all is said and done - a new river that calls the Woodhull (NY) Speedway home.

Galligan almost did not go to Black Rock.

After the victory lane celebration Galligan shared, “Our new car is still under construction at Close (Racing Supply). When we learned it would not be ready we thought we would simply wait for the Woodhull opener (April 18th). Charles (McGregor) and his guys rolled the old 1* car out of the trailer earlier in the week and here we are. What a way to start. We have the entire team excited about the new season.”

The BRP Cam Am Late Models should provide some excitement at Merrittville Speedway May 16th as Galligan is one of some 13 other drivers that have registered for the Tour’s Absolute Powder Coating Rookie of the Year honours.

The Late Model special event will feature a star studded field of the region’s pilots from Black Rock, Genesee, Little Valley, McKean County, and Woodhull.

Another race car featured at the Seaway Mall promotion was the Seaway Mall-sponsored 8M Modern Corporation Open Wheel Lite Car of Joey Mastroianni. The Welland native embarking ion his first full season in recent years – will be looking for top finishes in each event.

The Seaway Mall - located at 800 Niagara Street features over 120 friendly stores and services and offers free wireless internet throughout the mall.

The Seaway Mall is open Monday to Friday from 10 AM to 9 PM, Saturday from 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM and Sundays from 12 to 5 PM. Shoppers can also visit the Seaway Mall on line at www.seawaymall.com.

When the gates open May 16th, representatives from the Rankin Cancer Run will be set up with information on the 4th Annual Event set for May 23rd. The Rankin Cancer Run is all for Niagara. Every single dollar raised by the Rankin Cancer Run helps local cancer patients  - get involved, have fun and make a difference right here in our community. As usual, a late finish at work on Friday night, ruined any plans I had of going racing. I'm in the trucking industry and you can never be sure what time your day will end. These days, my Friday's are always busy, and I'm now having to get used to the fact.

Unless I get really lucky, racing is out. All this coincides with Fridays becoming the favorite race day for many promoters. Any tracks located less than a two hour drive from home, I class as 'local' and on some Fridays this year there are five of them running on the same night. They are the Can Am Speedway (Lafargeville NY) Capital City Speedway (Ottawa,Ont) Autodrome Edelweiss (Cantley Que) , Autodrome Granby (Que) and the Mohawk International Raceway (Hogansburg NY).

Wednesday nights are the regular race nights for the Capital City Speedway but at the beginning and end of the season they switch to Friday. The season opener was last Friday night ( 8 May) , and until my work commitments intervened that was going to be my destination.

The Airborne Speedway at Plattsburgh , New York is another of my local tracks and on Saturday (9 May) they were staging a 'double header' consisting of Tom Curley's, ACT Late Model Series and the DirtCar Modifieds. With favorable weather in the forecast I was looking forward to this one.

I awoke Saturday morning to a wet and miserable day, but heh ! the racing wasn't due to start until the evening so there was plenty of time for it to clear up.

During the day, in between showers I went along to the Benson Auto Parts store located on Brookdale Avenue in Cornwall (Ont). Bensons are one of the major sponsors at the Cornwall Motor Speedway and the track had presented a display of cars out side the store. The # 55 Dirt Modified of Perry Francis was there as well as the DIRT Pro Stock of # 47 Dave Bissonette, two cars from the Rookie division and Kart from Cornwall's Kids Karting club. The black Chevy Speedway Pace Truck was there and promoter Ron Morin was helping to cook hamburgers.

After socializing there for a while it was time to drive half a mile down the road to the International Bridge and head off to Airborne. On arrival at the bridge I was greeted by a police barrier, where no cars were permitted to cross. One of the cops informed me that a protest was taking place on the bridge and it would be closed for at least another hour. Damn it , I thought !  I'll have to cross into the USA via Montreal ( AutoRoute 15  to Lacolle and down I 87)

I made good time and the rain had stopped by the time I'd cleared Montreal , but the closer I got to the USA border, the darker the skies became. As I approached the last exit before the border the car started to snake, as I got a 'blow out' on one of my rear tires. I pulled on to the shoulder and went about fitting the spare. Just as I finished, the heavens opened and it was pouring with rain once more. Instead of continuing across the border I got off at the Lacolle exit and grabbed a coffee at the truck stop. I then rang the Airborne track and got the message that the show had been postponed until Sunday afternoon. So, it was back into the car for the drive back home.

The weather didn't look much better when I got up on Sunday morning, but I was determined to get some racing in, and was willing to try again.

This time the International Bridge at Cornwall was open and I crossed in to the USA at around 10-00am. Before heading to Plattsburgh , I took a detour down the Frogtown Road in Hogansburg to check out reconstruction progress of the Mohawk International Raceway. The new bleachers were in place and there were guys working on the main building. The 2009 opener is scheduled for May 22.

As I traveled towards Plattsburgh through the occasional rain shower, I must admit, I wasn't too optimistic about the days racing. Strangely, as I approached the outskirts of the city the skies got brighter, not much, but enough to give me hope. On arrival at the track the place was heaving with excited race goers and the cars were already out on the track doing hot laps. I met up with my buddy, track photographer, Mike Watts and joined him in the center to 'snap' some action. Topping the bill were the ACT Late Models with drivers from all over New England (USA) and Quebec ( Canada). There were over 40 of them in the pits as well as 20 plus Modifieds and the three other domestic divisions at Airborne. I was going to see the new Mini Modifieds for the first time. The 100 lap ACT race was an excellent affair that provided an exciting finish that could not have been better, if it were 'stage managed'.

Brad Leighton # 55NH led for the first half of the race with fellow New Hampshire driver Randy Potter # 02NH in hot pursuit. Potter edged past on a couple of occasions as Vermont's Scott Payea # 89 moved up to make it a three way battle. With about five laps to go Payea made his move and relegated Potter and Leighton to the 'chasers'. He then survived a late caution for the final run to the checkers. It was Great Stuff ! The Modified feature wasn't quite so exciting, but it did provide a good battle for first and second between Napierville, Quebec's Martin Roy # 90 and New Yorks Patrick Dupree # 24. The Canadian took the victory, his second consecutive win this year. Throughout the afternoon it stayed dry ( if not cold) it was a good days racing, and worth all the effort to get there.

Next weekend my three remaining local tracks stage their season openers, Autodrome Edelweiss (Fri) , Brockville Ontario Speedway (Sat) and the Cornwall Motor Speedway, Ont, (Sun). The Cornwall show has all the ingredients to be a great night with the opening 100 lap race in LUCAS OILS 358 MODIFIED CANADIAN DIRT SERIES.

OTHER STUFF

I'm sure there's a few people out there who after reading my 'stuff' , have doubted my sanity, regarding the obsession I have for traveling to the races. Those that know me well, will tell you, I've always been this way.

One crazy expedition I did in the late 1970's went something like this. Two buddies, Martin Budgell , Nigel Harradine and myself started our road trip on a Saturday night watching the BriSCA F1's at the ( long gone) Harringay Stadium in North London. When the racing was finished we drove down to Dover and caught the overnight ferry to Ostende in Belgium. On Sunday morning we drove through Belgium and the Netherlands to the Kaldenkirchen Speedway in Germany. We arrived around midday for the afternoon Superstox races.

The next week or so was spent drinking beer and 'chasing' good looking Dutch girls before the F1 stock car Long Track World Final at Baarlo. It was a great racing vacation and I'm still in contact today with Martin and Nigel. 'Nige' as we called was a BriSCA F2 driver and after a long retirement has recently resumed racing. He is back out this year in an F2/Superstox at his local Swaffham Stadium, close to his home in Norfolk (UK). He recently got a third in the Final/Feature. See attached photos.

Makes me think it's about time I ventured out on the track again ! Coincidentaly , Last time was at Airborne , driving Perry Winch's Mustang in a Media Race

As regular readers will know, I'm a member of the TRACKCHASERS forum and this past week we welcomed Nena a new member from Portugal , to our ranks. She is involved with 'Offroad', a motor sport concern, connected with AutoCross, RallyCross, Kart Cross and Truck Racing.

Check out their website www.offroadportugal.org

The video clips are excellent and makes me very envious. We don't get RallyCross as exciting as this in North America. The Cross cars look good too, and are similar in appearance to BriSCA F2 stock cars.

Ferrari threatens to quit F1

From TSN:

"Ferrari said Tuesday it won't enter next season's Formula One championship unless the sport's governing body revokes its new budget cap.
The storied Italian team, which has been involved in all 60 seasons of F1 racing, said the new FIA guidelines were arbitrary and would set a double standard. It said equal rules for everyone are necessary for the sport to continue..."

Scotia Speedworld Making Changes to Improve Fan Experience

(May 12, 2009, Halifax, NS) – As Scotia Speedworld prepares for the 2009 season, organizers have made sure to keep the fans at the forefront. Last year fans saw over a half million dollars worth of upgrades to the facility, and this year fans can expect to see further improvements. Fans will also notice changes to the Friday night Weekly Racing Series schedule, which should provide more racing excitement and enhance the overall fan experience.

Scotia Speedworld’s Weekly Racing Series hosts six different divisions of racecars. This season only five of the six divisions will run each week. Each week one division will rotate and take a much needed week off. The exception to this new ‘five division per week’ schedule will be the Season Opening and Season Finale events, in which all six divisions will participate.

Start time for the Weekly Racing Series has changed from 7:30 pm to 7:00 pm for the 09 season. The changes to the schedule have been implemented to provide fans and drivers the opportunity to take in all of the racing action each night and still be out of the venue at a reasonable hour. “We understand that fans don’t want to watch a five hour show, hopefully the changes we’ve made for the upcoming season will keep the show compact and jammed with action on the track,” commented Scotia Speedworld Race Director, Rob Bowness.

The Weekly Racing Series Season Opener will be held on a special day and time this year. The Bandoleros, Miller Tire Thunders & Lightnings, Lockhart Truck Centre Hobby Stocks, Legends, and C&R Auto Supply Sportsman cars, will race for the first time on May 30th at 2:00 pm – a special Saturday show! With evenings in May being chilly, fans will be able to enjoy the first week of racing in the afternoon while the temperature is still comfortable.

Scotia Speedworld has numerous special events lined up again this summer! Fan favourite Monster Jam will return on June 6th and 7th for three shows. Grave Digger, Backdraft, Eradicator and several of their monstrous friends will invade Scotia Speedworld with one mission – DESTRUCTION! Saturday fans can catch a 1:00 pm or 7:00 pm show, new this year is a Sunday matinee set for 1:00 pm. The popular Pit Party, where fans have the opportunity to get up-close and personal with the trucks and drivers, will take place on Saturday between 10:30 am – 12:30 pm. Tickets for Monster Jam are on sale now at all Ticket Atlantic locations.

The CARQUEST Pro Stock Tour recently announced four visits to Scotia Speedworld. The Lucas Oil 100 on May 23rd, the Forbes Chevrolet 100 on July 4th, and the Parts for Trucks 200 on September 12th. On August 7th & 8th the best drivers from the Maritimes and abroad will battle it out for the prestigious Atlantic CAT 250 title. Tickets for all CARQUEST Pro Stock Tour events are available at the gate on race day. Advance tickets are on sale now at all Ticket Atlantic locations.

Lucas Oil ESS: Ohsweken Speedway Preview

By Dean Reynolds

OHSWEKEN, ON - It can easily be described as the sprint car capital of Canada…The Ohsweken Speedway. A dream of one Glenn Styres as a simple 3/8ths mile oval literally built in his backyard to have fun has turned into one of the most premier dirt track facilities in both nations.

At Ohsweken its now sprint cars and nothing but sprint cars. For the first few seasons, sportsman machines were the weekly flavor but now it’s all wings showcasing the only weekly show of 360 sprint cars in the Northeastern US and Canada. That theory hasn’t worked anywhere else in what as known as modified country, it’s a niche here.

While the Corr/Pak Sprints is the family…Ohsweken likes to throw many parties to invite friends. The Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprints will be the first affair on Friday, May 29th. Also, how bout this…three more of the major 360 sanctions in the US and Canada, both the World of Outlaw Sprint and Late Models and it all culminates with the 5th Annual Arrow Express Canadian Sprint Car Nationals where ESS is proud to be a part once again.

Glenn Styres is the owner and the financial foundation with the hardest working husband and wife tandem of Cheryl and Ken Pelkie heading as the promoters. There is no I not dotted or a T crossed when it comes to the work of the Pelkies and that’s a trait that makes Ohsweken so successful.

Just about all the improvements are done at Ohsweken making this one of the most modern dirt track facilities of them all. Glenn has spent the money now he needs the weather gods on his side so he can make some back! A beautiful, tire friendly, banked oval produces no less than 4-wide racing. New high rise bleachers go from turn four to turn one; there isn’t a bad seat in the house. The pits are off the back stretch so fans have a clear view. Pit crews and pit spectators can view from a large set of bleachers on the backstretch with the pits boasting some of the most modern restroom facilities.

Drivers of local interest that will take on the stars and cars from the Lucas Oil tour are Glenn himself and his teammates of 2008 champ Keith Dempster and Ryan Hunsinger. Also you have Kevin Job, Dave Dykstra, Mikey Kruchka, Brad Malloy, Tom Huppunen and many more. The largest full point show car count last season was at Ohsweken with 42 machines in the pits.

Brockville Ontario Speedway Opener Saturday Night

BROCKVILLE, ONT - Spring has finally officially reached the Beast of the East. Brockville Ontario Speedway opens for another great season of competition on Saturday night, May 16th at 7pm. A few cars got to hit the track last Saturday afternoon for a practice session before the rains came, while a number of local drivers have been busy racing south of the border for over a month now trying to get out of the gate strong in 2009.

Danny O'Brien returns to defend another track championship in the 358 Modified division. O'Brien is well equipped with new equipment and a new sponsor as he tries to hold off the likes of Todd Stewart, Bryan Rogers and Bobby Herrington. Off season departures have left the Sportsman division wide open as teenagers Matt Billings, Shane Pecore and Dylan Evoy gear up to go head to head with veteran pilots Randy Earl and Randy Gaudet.

The Street Stocks also get very interesting after the demise of the trusty Nova of Billy Code in the final event of 2008, will Code be able to come back and defeat defending champ Steve Billings this time around. The wild and wacky Rookie class always provides some great entertainment with Steve Barber and Matt Bond among those trying to finally make their mark against the always powerful Jimmy Johnson inspired 20 of Josh Kane.

This Saturday night's program is presented by Mulder's Machine and Welding with gates opening at 5pm and the first heat rolling off at 7pm. Go kart fans will need to just a bit longer as their practice night is set for May 20th, with the first race set for the following Wednesday, May 27th.

IT'S EUROPE vs. THE U.S. AS THE STAR MAZDA CHAMPIONSHIP HEADS FOR MILLER MOTORSPORTS PARK IN A 4-WAY BATTLE FOR THE TOP TWO SPOTS IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP

It's only two races into the 2009 season and already an interesting points battle for the top two spots is shaping up as the Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear heads for Round Three at Miller Motorsports Park this weekend.

Englishman Adam Christodoulou, driving the #11 JDC Motorsports Mazda in his first-ever Star Mazda championship race, fired the opening shot with a victory from the outside of the front row in the season-opener at Sebring. In Round Two at VIR on April 26, Christodoulou took the pole position but crossed the finish line 7th after a wild last lap; meanwhile, while Irishman Peter Dempsey started alongside Christodoulou on the front row, pulled off a spectacular 'hail Mary' pass on the last lap and brought his #3 AIM Autosport / Motorsport Ireland / Queyside.ie Mazda home in first place. This is Dempsey's second season of Star Mazda Championship competition and he finished third in the 2008 championship with four wins, three of them in a row.

Where the first race, with Christodoulou never putting a wheel wrong, was a reasonably restrained demonstration of driving skill, by the time VIR rolled around, many of the Star Mazda Championship drivers seemed to have gotten in touch with their inner demolition derby driver and the race was a debris-strewn yellow-flag fest punctuated with the occasion couple of green flag laps. And at Sebring, another second-year driver, Californian Joel Miller, finished 5th while Rookie Conor Daly finished 3rd. At VIR, they swapped placings, with Miller finishing 3rd and Daly finishing 5th.

This is all the more interesting in light of the fact that in 2008, Miller was the reigning Skip Barber Pro Series Champion and racing in the Star Mazda with a scholarship from the MAZDASPEED Motorsports Driver Development Ladder. This year, he's paying his own way and his chief nemesis, Conor Daly, is the Skip Barber Pro Series champion and MAZDASPEED scholarship recipient. Miller is the classic outsider, a by-your-bootstraps driver who pilots the #2 JDC Motorsports Mazda, while Daly is the consummate insider, son of racing legend and noted broadcaster Derek Daly. He drives the #22 Andersen Racing / College Network / Indeck / Cytomax Mazda. Both are talented and hungry, and their season-long battle is sure to be intense.

As a result of the first two races, the duo of Christodoulou and Dempsey are tied in the championship battle with 74 points, while Miller and Daly are tied for second at 69 points. The Star Mazda Championship awards 44 points for a win, so all four, as well as a number of others, are still in the hunt. The Star Mazda Championship presents a uniquely deep talent pool this season; not only are countries such as U.S., Canada, England, Ireland, Norway, Brazil, Venezuela, Chile and Japan represented, but three of the top-4 and seven of the top-10 drivers from 2008 have returned to do battle again in 2009.

And at Miller Motorsports Park in 2008, while Joel Miller qualified 2nd and finished 3rd and Peter Dempsey qualified 6th and finished 4th, it was Louisiana racer Alex Ardoin, now in his third Star Mazda season, who made the biggest impression; starting from the 29th and last spot on the grid due to a mechanical problem in qualifying, he slashed his way up through the field to finish 10th. This year, Ardoin rounds out the top-5 in the championship battle with an 8th-place finish at Sebring and 2nd at VIR, yielding 86 points. Driving the #51 JDC Motorsports / Oral & Facial Surgery Center Mazda, he is the leading contender to step up and surprise the leaders.

Other drivers who should be watched are both second-season competitors; Canadian Taylor Hacquard, who finished 6th in 2008, and Billy Goshen who finished 8th. Hacquard changed teams in the off-season, and now drives the #15 Kester Racing Team 3G / Wolfe Auto Group / Texas World Speedway Mazda. Goshen's family team has expanded from one car last season to three, and he drives the #82 Goshen Motorsports / Baker Commodities / GPSTrackit / OTTO / First Quality Concrete Mazda.

Among Expert Series drivers (ages 30 – 44), 2008 Champion Chris Cumming of Vancouver, B.C. finished 2nd at Miller last year and heads back this year again leading his class championship with a class win at Sebring and 3rd at VIR driving the #16 Kester Racing Team 3G / Texas World Speedway / Motul Oil Mazda. His strongest competition will come from Japanese racer Toshihiro Deki, second in the championship with a 4th at Sebring and 2nd at VIR in the #80 Goshen Motorsports Mazda, as well as 2008 West Coast Star Mazda champion Patrick O'Neill, who missed Sebring but won his class at VIR in the #64 Mundill / O'Neill Construction Mazda.

In the Master Series (age 45 and older), champion Chuck Hulse did not return this year, but his teammate and 2nd-place finisher in the 2008 championship, Gerry Kraut, is back in the #55 JDC Motorsports / Dougherty & Co. / Dougherty Funding LLC Mazda, scoring 2nd-place finishes at Sebring and VIR. Kraut is also co-owner of JDC. His main competition this year again comes from a teammate, though this time its California Michael Guasch, who leads the Master Series championship by virtue of class wins in both of the first two races at the wheel of the #91 JDC Motorsports / Molecule Mazda.

In addition to the various championship battles already underway, Round 3 of the Star Mazda Championship at Miller Motorsports Park marks the first of five races designated as Star Mazda / Racing for Kids events. Participating drivers (including Alex Ardoin, Toshihiro Deki, Ryan Booth, Chris Cumming, Billy Goshen, Taylor Hacquard, Kristy and J.C. Kester, Caio Lara and Joel Miller) will visit the Primary Children’s Medical Center at 100 Medical Drive at 3:00 pm, Thursday, May 14. The top-finishing driver on the list at the Miller event will receive a $500 cash prize, with a comparable cash donation made to the Children’s Hospital in that driver’s name. At the end of the season, a $1,000 cash prize will be offered to the best performing driver in the five race mini-series with another $1,000 going to the children’s healthcare institution of the driver’s choice. Joel Miller of Hesperia, California won the RFK Star Mazda title last year and Alex Ardoin of Lafayette, Louisiana won the honor in 2007.

On-track activities for drivers in the Star Mazda Championship begins with a pair of 50-minute promoter test sessions on Thursday, May 14, one beginning at 8:00 am and the other at 1:00 pm. A pair of official 45-minute practice sessions will take place on Friday, May 15 at 8:45 am and 1:00 pm. Qualifying to set the grid for the Star Mazda Championship's spectacular, F1-style standing start takes place from 8:35 am - 9:20 am Saturday, May 16, with the 45-minute Round 3 of the 2009 Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear at Miller Motorsports Park during the Larry H. Miller Dealerships Utah Grand Prix Presented by the Grand & Little America Hotels scheduled to get the green light at 6:05 pm Saturday afternoon.
