RACELINE RADIO: Erik Tomas's 'Tomas Tales'
Erik Tomas' 'Tales'... from Raceline Radio
Lewis Hamilton continues to astound! A week after his first pole and Formula One win in Montreal, the 22 year old U.K wonder-kid marches into Indianapolis, another track he’s never laid eyes on before, and scores his second-straight pole and win!
And at the Brickyard, he battles his McLaren team mate and reigning champion Fernando Alonso head-to-head, and beats him again, heads up! Hamilton lets more opening lap wreckage swirl in behind him off the start, beats Alonso out in the first round of pit stops and where most rookies may have backed off, he goes hub-to-hub with Alonso on lap 39, holds his line and his nerve, and Fernando never got close enough to stop the kid again!
So that’s 2 poles, 2 wins and 7 podiums in his first 7 GP’s! Pretty fair shootin’ in anybody’s rifle range! McLaren boss Ron Dennis says this time there was never a question of team orders, legal or illegal in some books. They let the boys race even though they’re on the same team and those Constructors points are the most precious, evident with the sweaty palms on the McLaren wall when Alonso and Hamilton went side-by-side.
Good racing, but what happens if they crash each other out? Ah, there’s the Formula One rub! It’s interesting to watch and listen to the American media coverage of Lewis Hamilton’s feats. They rarely run the story without mentioning he’s the first black F-1 driver, that he’s pulling off these heroics, and he’s a black driver.
While it certainly is historic, The U.K and European media seems to downplay the race angle. And when I interviewed Lewis and had him on Raceline Radio last week, I was politely asked to avoid the topic. They said Lewis prefers we not dwell on his ethnicity. Fine with me. I don’t care if the kid’s purple. The much bigger story is the fact that we just might be looking at Formula One’s first rookie champion.
That would be absolutely huge, no matter what colour his skin is! So while my crystal ball worked with Lewis Hamilton, I might need to adjust the horizontal hold on the Dale Earnhardt sweepstakes.
I was convinced he was headed to continue his daddy’s legacy at Richard Childress Racing once he announced his departure from DEI. Wrong. Rick Hendrick, who’s known Little E. since he was the “Smallest E.” wanted NASCAR’s most popular driver on his squad with Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Casey Mears and all those championships.
Maxed out at 4 teams, something had to give, and that was Kyle Busch. I had an interview with Busch ready to pop this week, but that was yanked when contract renewal talks broke down when I’m told Busch wanted too much money prompted by offers from other teams. Hendrick suddenly had a tenant check out of his hotel and that left a room for Earnhardt Junior.
I loved the story Rick and Junior told during the chunk of the media conference we played on the show. When E was only 15, he signed a little contract on a napkin to work for Hendrick when he started driving. When they finalized the deal this past week for real, Rick reminded Junior of their napkin contract. Junior was surprised Rick remembered it.
Hendrick says he never brought it up because he was afraid of Junior’s daddy if he tried to enforce it! Laughter all ’round. The Earnhardt Junior-Hendrick alliance also has emotional roots. Ricky, Rick’s son, who we lost in a plane crash, once said to his Dad one day Dale Earnhardt Junior would drive for Hendrick Motorsports. Junior lost his Intimidator Dad at Daytona, so just maybe Rick sees Dale Junior’s arrival as the fulfillment of his late son’s prophecy, and Junior’s got a strong father figure in his career again.

KONI CHALLENGE: KENSAI/COMPASS360 MOSPORT RACE REPORT
Mosport, the sixth of twelve races on the KONI Challenge schedule, was a very rewarding weekend for the Kensai Racing with Compass360 team. Each of the team's three cars finished the race, with solid performances from all six drivers. Karl Thomson and Billy Johnson drove their #76 Acura TSX to victory with a dramatic last-lap pass for the lead, while Taz Harvey and Beau Buisson gave the #75 TSX its best result of the season by finishing fifth. Matt Pritiko, meanwhile, put another solid result in the books to keep his Rookie of the Year hopes alive.
THOMSON AND JOHNSON TAKE THIRD VICTORY
Billy Johnson passed the leading Turner BMW of Trevor Hopwood on the very last lap, snatching victory and edging to within one point of the championship lead. "As he always does, Karl gave me the car in a good position (fifth) and in great shape, with lots of tires and brakes," remarked Johnson. "I'd moved up to third by just past mid- way through the race and was staying with the leaders, doing my best to save the car for a sprint at the end. But after the second yellow flag, at the restart Pierre (Kleinubing in the #82 BMW Z4) and I had to avoid a slower car. I hit the brakes but they weren't there and I ended up going way off track in corner two."
The off-track excursion dropped Johnson to fifteenth place, and he worked tirelessly to make his way through traffic. With only ten laps left, Johnson was fourth, Kleinubing in first, Nick Wittmer in his TSX in second, and Hopwood in third. Kleinubing and Wittmer had gambled on a mid-race pit strategy, and unfortunately it didn't pay off this time, with the Z4 running out of gas and the i-MOTO TSX having to pit for fuel, handing the lead to Hopwood.
"Billy and I normally chat quite a bit on the radio," chuckled Thomson. "But when he finally caught Trevor and was working on the pass, he told me to shut up so he could concentrate. That's when I knew he was really working hard!"
The win marks the duo's third of the season, and helps to solidify Acura's lead in the manufacturer's championship, with 197 points, 14 more than BMW's 183. Johnson and Thomson now have 163 points, one behind the Turner team-mates with 164.
HARVEY AND BUISSON FINISH FIFTH
Beau Buisson halted his five-race unlucky streak with a solid top- five result at Mosport. The fifth place finish was all the more remarkable because it was accomplished with a car that started the race clearly worse for wear. "I was following (Jamie) Holtom in the #01 Cobalt during qualifying" noted co-driver Taz Harvey. "Going through corner three I got it a little sideways and just kept it drifting to the exit, but the car hooked up and I ended up nose-first into the wall." Still, Harvey qualified twelfth.
With less than an hour and a half to repair the #75 Acura between qualifying and the race, the Kensai crew went to work, the result being a fully-functional, if somewhat visually impaired, race car. The hood was held in place with Crew Chief Ray Lee's "special" packing tape, and the bumper with a rather large collection of zip ties.
Harvey settled into a good rhythm after the start, taking the car up to as high as ninth place before handing it to Buisson during the first caution period. Beau took the reigns and gradually made up places, limited by his inability to draft. "I'd get a good run on the car in front through the corners, but when I pulled up behind on the straight the water temp would get too high and I'd have to pull out to cool the engine," he said. Like Johnson, Buisson made a great last- lap pass, in this case taking fifth place from the #127 Fountain BMW of Guy Cosmo.
PRITIKO CONTINUES STRONG ROOKIE YEAR
Matt Pritiko shared the #74 Acura RSX-S with Dave Ciekiewicz, who currently lies third in the Canadian Touring Car Championship GT ranks. Pritiko's had an amazing rookie year in his very first season in street stock racing; he's currently in seventh place in the KONI Challenge ST driver's championship, and Mosport provided an excellent opportunity to continue his progress up the leader board.
"Matt's been a great study this year," noted Thomson. "His results are all the more impressive when you figure that not only is this his first time outside of an open-wheel car but he's also new to every track!"
Ciekiewicz started the car from 16th position, and the team elected to try a different strategy for #74, leaving Dave out for the first yellow in the hopes of another one mid-race, just within the car's fuel window. Unfortunately, like the #01 Cobalt, the #74 had to pit under green flag conditions for gas, tires and a driver change.
Although Ciekiewicz had managed to bring the car up to ninth place by mid-way through the stint, the green flag stop meant that Pritiko returned to the track in 16th. He valiantly moved through traffic, but was a lap down to the leaders. Like the other two Kensai/ Compass360 Acuras, Matt managed some good late-race improvements, moving up two positions in the last three laps, finishing in 11th.
With only two days before the rigs leave for the next KONI race (at Mid-Ohio), there's much repair and preparation to be done at the Toronto-based Kensai Racing shop, but there's no doubt the team is up to the task!

Dale Jr. sponsorship hint?
Despain: Do you think Teresa will give Hendrick the No. 8?
Waltrip: I don’t think that’s very likely. I really think he’s going to be stuck with 08, if he wants to keep 8.
Despain: Well, with the magic of the Internet, there’s already a Budweiser No. 5 car painted up. Here is what it might look like…
Waltrip: Well, I don’t think that will be true; I don’t think it will be Budweiser.
Despain: Do you know who it will be?
Waltrip: It will still be probably something you can drink – that would be my guess. And it won’t be in a red can.

NCATS: FUEL STARVATION PROBLEM ROBS BROWN OF TOP-TEN FINISH

Brown, who readily admits his road course racing skills are not up to par with some the series leaders, was behind the wheel of the unfamiliar DJ Kennington-prepared Dodge for the first time in the early season.
The racing veteran was among the field of 29 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series starters for the Fathers’ Day “Dickies 200” special at the legendary road course and he was looking to improve upon his 10th-place finish of a year ago while competing in the CASCAR Super Series.
Despite a disappointing qualifying time that saw him line-up 18th for the 400 kilometre chase through the rolling course north of Bowmanville, the Brantford driver was comfortable at the drop of the green flag and quickly settled into a steady pace through the first dozen laps around the 10-turn track. By lap 18th he had moved to 12th place and was chasing down fellow Dodge Charger competitor Brad Graham for another spot. But as he swung through the sweeping turn three on lap 20, he felt a sudden drop in fuel pressure taking away much of his momentum and forcing him to drop off the pace.
“It appears there is a problem in the fuel pickup”, Doug reported as his crew prepared for a fast pit stop for two tires and fuel. Once he got back into the chase the car felt fine but the problem redeveloped again around lap 40. He retreated to the pits for another splash of fuel but failed to regain the speed needed to improve his 14th-place position.
“I’m confident we could have gained a top ten finish or even better had that fuel problem not developed,” he added. “The two tires we changed were like new and the car felt comfortable with lots of power before and after the problems”.
The event was the first of four road course/street circuit events Doug will be running in the Kennington-prepared machine.
Like many of their fellow competitors, Doug and his teammates had some anxious moments during the events’ pre-race inspections in order to correct and resolve some issues required to comply with the tough NASCAR mandated specifications.
“Having gone through that inspection process, there is little doubt, all teams are playing from the same sheet of music now that NASCAR is in charge of our series,’’ remarked crew chief Kelly Hallett when the final NASCAR official’s initials were placed on his inspection sheet. “That in itself is a sure sign the competition in this series can only get better”.
The team is now making the final preparations to their primary Haldex-sponsored oval track Mopar-powered Dodge Charger for the Canada Day race weekend at Barrie Speedway.
Heading to that July 1st event Doug finds himself 13th in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series points’ standings and just eight points out of 10th place occupied by Grimsby, Ontario’s Jeff Lapcevich –a position the Brantford driver would like to be in before the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series teams head out on their mid-July swing to Western Canada for an oval track race at Sun Valley Speedway near Vernon, BC and a road course event as part of the CHAMP Car Series weekend in Edmonton.
During pre-race autograph sessions, Doug had an opportunity to renew acquaintance with Miguel Duhamel, the legendary Honda motorcycle racer, winningest AMA road racer and 5-time Daytona 200 Superbike champion, who making his debut on four wheels at the wheel of the #8 – Bitumar – Jacombs Racing entry in the “Dickies 200” presented by Canadian Shield.
The two had competed in Super Cross racing back in the 1980’s before breaking away to other motorsports programs – Duhamel to motorcycle racing and Doug into stock cars.

Pete Shepherd to make his first NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series start of '07 this weekend at the Milwaukee Mile
(Interesting quote from the crew chief, saying his goal for Petey for the weekend is to, "complete all the laps and keep all four fenders on it." Shepherd did that last year and ended up on the bench. Screw the fenders, Jack can afford some more.... GO PETEY GO! .... g.m.)
From Rory W. Connellan // Roush Fenway Racing
Peter Shepherd will make his first NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series start of the 2007 season this weekend at Milwaukee. Shepherd last competed in the Truck Series at Las Vegas in September of ’06, where he drove the No. 6 truck to an 18th-place finish.
The No. 50 Roush Fenway Racing team is bringing chassis RK240-34 to Milwaukee. This chassis last raced at Mansfield last month, where T.J. Bell started 19th and finished 13th.
Shepherd is currently scheduled to drive the No. 50 at Milwaukee, Memphis and Kentucky.
PETER SHEPHERD ON THE MILWAUKEE MILE. . .
“I’m really happy to be back behind the wheel of the No. 50 Roush Fenway Racing Ford F-150 this weekend. I like racing at Milwaukee, I ran there last year in ARCA. Hopefully we can complete all the laps and bring home a good finish.”
MATT PUCCIA ON THE MILWAUKEE MILE. . .
“It’s been a while since Peter has raced with us, but we’re really happy to have him back. Our goals for this weekend are pretty simple, complete all the laps and keep all four fenders on it. If we can accomplish that, we’ll feel like we had a successful weekend.”

J.R. FITZPATRICK AND MILWAUKEE ELECTRIC TOOLS CHEVY TAKE SECOND AT MOSPORT
BOWMANVILLE, ON – The Milwaukee Electric Tools Chevrolet team with John Ryan (J.R.) Fitzpatrick behind the wheel returned to action for round 2 of the NASCAR Canadian Tire series this past weekend at Mosport International Raceway. And right from the first session J.R. knew he had a rocket of a racecar.
During the practice sessions the Milwaukee Electric Tools Chevy was very fast and the team made very few changes to the set up. J.R. did all he could for a quick lap and would run second quickest, and score a front row starting spot for the 200-km race. “The car was just great,” said the 19-year-old driver. “We’ll definitely be fast for the race.”
As the race began, Fitzpatrick was jumped at the start by the pole-sitter, the subsequent penalty to the #27 car only ensured that the Milwaukee Electric Tools car would be out front. “Penalty or not we were going to be out front,” said J.R. afterwards. Their were no other competitors who could match the power of the Milwaukee Electric Tools car and Fitzpatrick would lead comfortably for the first 22 laps until pit stops began.
It was routine service for the team as they returned J.R. and the Milwaukee Electric Tools car to the fight. As the rest of the drivers made their scheduled stops Fitzpatrick cycled back to the front of the pack. “I was just trying to save the car for the final five laps after that,” said the driver. The challenge came a little earlier than that however.
On lap 43 during the approach to corner 5 the #27 car made significant contact with the Milwaukee Electric Tools Chevy, sending Fitzpatrick off course. Using his skill and ability, J.R. recovered without losing any further positions. Unfortunately he was not able to retake the lead and had to settle for a second-place finish.
While happy to be on the podium, Fitzpatrick was disappointed with what appeared to be his first win bumped away. “My crew chief, Ted McAllister gave me such a good car for this race. We were hooked up right from the start. We definitely had the best race car. It’s unfortunate that we didn’t get the win, I really wanted this one for my dad on Father’s Day.”
After the race both competitors came together on the course, Fitzpatrick was still upset about the pass. “I was a bit emotional after the race,” said J.R. “And I let him know how I felt. But everything is fine, he’s a talented driver and I think it’s going to be a great battle on the rest of the road courses this year between us.”
NCATS: McColm Hampered by Transmission
BOWMANVILLE, ON – Joey McColm, of Ajax, ON took to Mosport last weekend, an hour northeast of Toronto for the Dickie’s 200 presented by Canadian Shield. McColm, the driver of the Team ATTO / Lang Michener Dodge Avenger, would be competing in the second event of the NASCAR Canadian Tire Racing Series presented by Sirius Satellite Radio, and it would also mark his first ever start on a road course.
McColm got his feet wet early in practice as he stayed on the course, and improved with every lap. “Halfway through the first practice session, we were 16th of the 29 cars there. We kept improving, but really got hurt in the second practice. There were a number of cautions for problems on the track, and we only got a couple of good laps in between yellows.”
During qualifying, McColm had a tough time finding drafting partners up the backstretch, but still knocked down a best lap of one minute, 32.6 seconds. “I was really looking forward to Sunday. We gained so much during the day on Saturday, and for my first start I was confident about the feature.”
The 200km main event rolled off on Father’s Day, with McColm climbing the scoring chart quickly. “The car was amazing, and I was able to reel them in and pick them off. We were getting one or two a lap, and I was having a lot of fun.”
Joey climbed to 13th when the leaders started to cycle through regularly scheduled pit stops. As they dropped to pit road, McColm’s number finally appeared in the top-five, and shuffling as high as third before he brought his # 50 in for service. When Joey got to his pit stall he had to back the car up, and when he did that, the transmission locked itself up. “It was so hot that it just welded it first and second gear.”
McColm was disappointed, especially considering the 25th-place result that was in no way indicative of the way the team preformed, “I’m heartbroken – more upset than anything. I’d never been on a road course before and we ran great. We were looking at a top-10, maybe a seventh or an eighth. We received a lot of positive comments after the race, and I think we impressed some people. I know we’ll be a lot more confident heading to Edmonton for the next road course event.”
The next event for Team ATTO will be Canada Day weekend at Barrie Speedway, Sunday July 1st, for the MOPAR 300. For McColm, it will be a homecoming of sorts, as he returns to the track he cut his Late Model teeth on. “I’ve been there since they redid the layout a few years ago. It’s a great track, and we’re really excited about going there. We made some changes to the car since Cayuga, and I think we’re going to have a good Canada Day weekend.”
NCATS: Beauchamp Snags Podium

BOWMANVILLE, ON – Ron Beauchamp Jr. and the Mobil 1/Mopar Parts Team came to Mosport International Raceway with a new look to the car, but also wanting some of the success he’d achieved in the past. They got the job done.
Though they were not the fastest car in qualifying the Mobil 1/Mopar Parts team knew they had a good race car for the 200km main event for round 2 of the NASCAR Canadian Tire series. “The way we were setting up the racecar, we didn’t expect to have one really fast lap, but I know that this car will be a good car for the race,” said Ron Jr. prior to the start of the event.
As the green flag waved for the main event Beauchamp was able to move the Mobil 1/Mopar Parts car up several positions from their seventh starting spot in the opening few laps. “Things went just as we expected at the start,” said the driver. “I just wanted to move up a little and see how things went until halfway and then have something left for the end.”
Things continued to go well for the Mobil 1/Mopar Parts team and Beauchamp was in the top group of cars and took over the race lead just prior to halfway as pit stops began for the competitors. During the service stop the only real trouble for the team occurred as the car rolled off the jack during the left side tire change. “It was my fault,” said Beauchamp Jr. “I took a drink and my foot came off the brake and the car rolled a bit, the guys did a great job getting the two tires on and making the call to send me out with only the left side tires changed.”
The Mobil 1/Mopar Parts Dodge was back on course and having only changed two tires did not slow them down. Beauchamp was back in the lead pack and working hard for a better position. Beauchamp would come home in third place, claiming the first podium position for the team this year. “We didn’t’ use up the car in the first part of the race and that was a key,” said Ron Jr. “I was able to fight for position all day, in fact my fastest lap of the day came with only three laps remaining, and we only changed two tires. My crew chief Chris Couvillion and the guys did a great job today.”
With two of 12 races complete, Ron Beauchamp Jr. sits fourth in the overall series championship point standings.

NCATS: Graham not happy with 10th

The start to the Father’s Day weekend event on the famed Mosport International Raceway road course had the team chasing some mechanical troubles during practice. Those quickly corrected Graham was prepared for a good afternoon in the 200km main event. “If we’re not in the top-10 by the end of the day I’ll be disappointed,” he stated prior to the race. Graham’s wish would be realized.
Brad was able to move the Full Throttle Fury Dodge up several positions in the early going. An early caution period slowed the field briefly after only five laps, but during a long green-flag run afterwards Graham was able to continue his move toward the front of the field. As pit stops began to cycle through Graham would take his turn in the race lead before making his scheduled stop for service.
Just past the halfway point of the race Brad Graham and the Full Throttle Fury team were in the top-10 of a very competitive field of cars. As the race laps wound down Brad felt there was more in the car but the gear selection the team had made for the race was not ideal. “I think we made the wrong choice in gear because running down the long backstretch I could feel the car had plenty of Dodge power, but the gear we were running wouldn’t allow us that little extra we need.” Graham would fight hard with several other cars and complete the race in 10th spot.
“I said before the race if we didn’t finish top-10 I’d be disappointed. Well, we finished 10th and I’m still disappointed,” he concluded after the event. “I got held up quite a bit by one car, that and the gear choice our team made both hurt us or I think we certainly would have finished even better. We definitely learned from our experiences this weekend, we’ll be even better when we come back here again.”

NCATS: Kennington Pleased with Results

BOWMANVILLE, ON – DJ Kennington and the Castrol Dodge Crew returned to action in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series with round 2 taking place this past weekend at the famed Mosport International Raceway road course. Fast during all sessions, Kennington would claim a top-five finish in the race on Sunday.
Knowing that the team had a fast racecar in round 1 of the series at Cayuga and not getting the finish they deserved, Kennington and the Castrol Dodge team were determined not to let that happen again. For the second straight race the Castrol Dodge was a fast car and DJ claimed the third starting spot for the 200km race. “This car was really good right from the start of the weekend. We made a few minor adjustments, and when we put new tires on for qualifying we picked up over a second and a half on our laps times, it all worked out really well.” The team would continue their solid weekend during the race.
Kennington was cautious on his approach to the start of the race. “The two guys in the first row I knew were going to fight hard for the lead in the first few corners so I wanted to make sure nothing happened and we’d start to settle into a rhythm,” said the driver. As the race began to settle in Kennington was right among the front runners battling for position.
Pit stops began around the mid-point of the race and the Castrol Crew performed as usual with quick efficient service changing four tires and fuel that would take the Castrol Dodge to the finish. “The car really felt good all afternoon,” said Kennington. “We didn’t make any changes just got back out there after our stop.”
With a fast, well-handling racecar Kennington was again able to stay with the lead group of cars and fight for position. When it was over the Castrol Dodge recorded a fifth place finish. “We needed that one,” said a smiling DJ Kennington afterwards. “We ran great all day, we might not have had the fastest car but this finish has really got us back on track for the rest of the season.”

NCATS: Thomson has Trouble at Mosport

BOWMANVILLE, ON - Don Thomson Jr. and the entire Home Hardware team were preparing for another strong run in round 2 of the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series (NCATS) as the teams went road racing on the challenging circuit at Mosport International Raceway this past weekend. Sadly a number of mechanical issues would see their day end early.
Thomson has been a consistently strong runner at the world class Mosport circuit throughout his career. The Home Hardware Chevy was quick through both qualifying sessions and claimed the fifth starting spot on the grid. While that was good it was a little disappointing for the driver. “I think this is the first time since 1997 that I haven’t qualified on the front row,” said Thomson. “I need a little more steam to really challenge these guys.” An electrical problem was also found by the team during the pre race preparations.
Early on in the 200km race there seemed to be plenty of power under the hood of the Home Hardware Chevy, but other issues were getting in the way of Thomson moving up to the front of the field. “We had a clutch problem almost right from the start,” said the driver afterwards. “I knew if we were going to salvage any kind of finish we’d have to address it right away”. The Home Hardware team summoned the driver to pit road during an early caution period to try and diagnose the problem. After some quick work Thomson called crew chief Sandy Hamilton on the radio and said there were still problems and the team would have to work on the clutch issues all afternoon. Unfortunately they never really got the opportunity.
As Thomson worked hard to ease the strain on the battered clutch, more serious problems would later surface. During an extended green-flag run, motor problems would force the Home Hardware Chevy out, ending their afternoon on lap 30. “We’ll have to take the car apart to find the true cause of what happened but it’s certainly disappointing,” said Thomson. “I can’t say enough thanks to everybody for working as hard as they did with the troubles we had this weekend. We just have to regroup and we’ll be ready to go again in a couple of weeks,” he concluded.

NCATS: Hathaway Report from Mosport
June 17, 2007- Bowmanville, ON - The second round of competition and the first road course event of four on the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series was filled with a lot of mechanical work for Team 3 Red/EHR and driver of the Snap on Tools Dodge, Jason Hathaway.
The work for the team started on Saturday morning at the 2.5 mile, 10-turn Mosport International Raceway when they experienced a transmission failure on their race machine during the first practice. The team replaced the transmission and went out for their second practice later in the morning. The team came out of the final practice in the 18th position and went to work on their car to improve it for the qualifying session on Saturday afternoon.
In qualifying, Hathaway went out in the first session and recorded five laps before he reported a problem with his motor. The crew brought the car into the garage area and under the direction of Crew Chief Giulio Montanari diagnosed their problem. They pulled the motor out of the car and prepared for a motor change to get their car into the starting field for Sunday.
"The guys worked really well together and we were buttoned up and running in good time this morning," said Giulio as the car rolled out of technical inspection and out onto the starting grid Sunday morning. "This is a great group of guys and I am pretty proud of what they have accomplished already this weekend."
With the motor change, Hathaway had to give up his qualifying position and started at the rear of the field in 29th position. The team set their plan to be patient and work their way through the pack. As the green flag flew on Sunday afternoon, Hathaway started his way toward the front. On the start he picked up two positions and by lap 11 was in a steady rhythm running 21st. Green flag pit stops started on lap 23 and the field rotated through the pits taking on fuel and tires. Hathaway stayed out until lap 29 before coming to the attention of his crew, leading a lap and gaining five valuable points in the driver points standings.
After a full course caution on lap 30, Hathaway picked up his rhythm once again and made some beautiful passes in corners 8 and 9 passing cars and securing a 15th-place position. The transmission problem they had hampered the team earlier in the weekend rose once again on lap 37 and Hathaway dropped back to 18th as he shorted shifted out on course. Hathaway babied his car for the next 14 laps and was able to work his way back up to 15th in the running order to finish the 51 lap event.
"The start of the weekend was pretty tough," Hathaway volunteered as he climbed out of his car at the end of the race. "During the race the car handled pretty good and I got into a pretty good rhythm out there. I wish we could have finished better. We'll take this result and improve for our next road course event at the Edmonton Grand Prix in July."

NCATS: #9 Dodge / Mark Dilley Mosport Report
Dodge-sponsored Avenger driver Mark Dilley advances eight spots to finish sixth at Mosport Int’l Raceway
BARRIE, ON – The goals a racer brings to the track differ from event to event, depending on the venue. On Sunday afternoon at Mosport International Raceway, Mark Dilley was intent on bringing his #9 Dodge-sponsored Avenger home with a top 10 finish.
In the end, the veteran NASCAR Canadian Tire Series (NCATS) racer surpassed his target, scoring a sixth-place result in the 51-lap chase around the legendary 10-turn road course. Following two rounds of the 12-race NCATS series, the Barrie, ON resident is in third-place in the overall point standings.
"I’m really happy with our run,” said Dilley, after the race. “We came here with the goal of finishing in the top 10 and anything near fifth would have been really good. So to leave with a sixth is really positive for our team. We always seem to run between fourth and seventh in the road races, so this is about par for the course.”
The result was all the more impressive, considering Dilley fought from 14th at the start of the race. The #9 Dodge / Mobil1 / Exide / MOPAR / Leland / Wild Wing / CRS Dodge Avenger crew tried some setup changes following practice that didn’t improve the handling of their car for qualifying.
“We made some adjustments to the car prior to qualifying hoping to improve on where we were in practice. But it didn’t work out for us and our qualifying effort wasn’t where we wanted it to be.
“But as we got into the race, the guys worked through the handling issues and it was strong at the end. It’s such a long race that we had a chance to chip away and we advanced eight spots from where we started. We made a bunch of our passes on the track and the guys got us some positions in the pits, so it was a real team effort. My only real adventure was when I got a few wheels off in turn 5 just to keep me sharp.”
LOOKING AHEAD: Canada Day MOPAR 300 at Barrie Speedway
The next race for the #9 Dodge-sponsored team will be the Canada Day MOPAR 300 on Sunday, July 1 at Barrie Speedway. The event is special to Dilley for a number of reasons. The 1/3-mile tri-oval is Dilley’s ‘hometrack.’ And he’ll be returning to the speedway looking for a checkered flag that eluded him on two occasions, at Barrie, last season.
“We were within striking distance of winning at Barrie last season. In the first race, we were out front but got into oil with a few laps to go. And then in the second race, we were leading and got dumped near the end. It owes us one. We’re going to be fast there.”
MOSPORT NOTEBOOK: Former Champ Car open-wheel racer Andrew Ranger won Sunday’s Dickies 200 km race at Mosport International Speedway. The Quebec native started on the pole but earned a ‘drive through’ penalty for jumping the start for the initial green flag. Undeterred, Ranger emerged from the pits in 10th-place and started to recover the lost positions.
J.R. Fitzpatrick dominated the majority of the race, but couldn’t hold off Ranger. Following contact on lap 42 in the turn 5 complex, Ranger emerged with the lead and held on the rest of the way for the win in just his third career stock car start. Fitzpatrick came home second, ahead of MOPAR-sponsored Avenger driver Ron Beauchamp Jr.

OSS: Mosport Race Summary
In pre-race qualifying, Kitchener’s Shawn McGlynn set fast time allowing the driver of the #81 Ford to start the first contest (a fifty lapper) from pole position. Taking advantage of his grid placing, McGlynn assumed the race lead at the drop of the green, outside front row starter Steve Robblee slotting in behind in second place. These front two racers swapped the lead three times before lap nine when Robblee finally made his passing move stick, securing the lead which he held to the checkered flag.
Josh Wood (#66 Chevy) managed to work his way around McGlynn and up into the runner-up spot on lap 12, these top three, Robblee, Wood, and McGlynn running out the caution-free contest in order with Kenny Forth and Dave Connelly rounding out the top five finishers.
A dozen sleek Sportsman cars answered the bell for Saturday night’s Round Two, this dash slated for thirty laps.
As in the previous contest, the pole sitter claimed the early race lead with Matt Robblee (son of Steve) jumping into top spot when the green flag flew. Immediately harassed by first Mike Hryniuk and then by McGlynn, the younger Robblee held the point for nine circuits of the Mosport half-mile, but found himself relegated to second place when McGlynn swept low entering Turn Three, moving by the #27 Ford and into top spot.
By the race’s halfway mark, the elder Robblee had wrestled his #28 Ford into third place and then with ten to go, outbraked his son entering the first corner to move into second place. Continuing his charge towards the front, Robblee in the end had nothing left for McGlynn, coming up several car lengths shy of the race winner.
On lap 25, Matt Robblee came under fire from a host of challengers and bobbled under braking for Turn Three, sliding wide and opening the door for Kenny Forth (#86), Hryniuk (#80) and Connelly (#82). Taking advantage of the gap, all three squirted past Robblee, this freight train running in order to the stripe, completing finishing positions three through five.
In the combined standings, Steve Robblee was declared the evening’s overall champion, his first and second place finishes outscoring McGlynn’s win and third place result.

NCATS: Ranger Wins Dickies 200 Presented by Canadian Shield
As the pole sitter, he jumped the start of the race and was penalized with a pass-through penalty costing him nearly 10 positions. Then, on a lap 22 pit stop he seemingly stopped too close to the wall giving the jackman the difficult task of lifting the right side of the car.
Ranger took the lead for good on lap 43 of the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Sirius Satellite Radio event. It was a lead that he had to wrestle away from second-place finisher J.R. Fitzpatrick. After flirting with a nearly three second lead, Ranger beat Fitzgerald to the line by 1.694 seconds.
A native of Roxton Pond, Quebec, Ranger had not spent a great deal of time behind the wheel of a stock car, but was able to earn his first win in just his second NASCAR event. A year ago, Ranger finished 10th in the CHAMP Car final point standings. He made the full-time switch to the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series last off season.
“This is such a competitive series. It is such an honor to win the pole and the race,” said the victorious Ranger. “After the mistake at the very beginning, I just started pushing it as hard as it could go and never let up.”
“Andrew is a very talented driver especially on road courses,” said Fitzgerald.
Ron Beauchamp finished third followed. He was followed by Peter Gibbons and D.J. Kennington in fourth and fifth, respectively.
Mark Dilley, Jeff Lapcevich, Dave Whitlock, Derek Lynch and Brad Graham rounded out the top 10.
Miguel Duhamel, multiple time AMA Super Bikes champion, earned an 11th-place finish in first race behind the wheel of a stock car.
The NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Sirius Satellite Radio is back on the track next for a big July 1 Canada Day race at Barrie (Ontario) Speedway.
