JAMES RIVER, NS (April 20, 2011) – NASCAR’s Marcos Ambrose has confirmed he will return to Nova Scotia this July to enter the 2011 edition of the IWK 250 presented by Steve Lewis Auto Body. The Richard Petty Motorsports driver will spend a rare NASCAR Sprint Cup Series off-weekend at Riverside International Speedway July 22-23 hoping to take the IWK 250 championship trophy back to his home North Carolina.
Ambrose will return to Riverside as a sophomore behind the wheel of a super late model race car, making his first attempt in last year’s IWK 250. The two-time V8 Supercar champion turned NASCAR driver adapted quickly and led laps early in a car he felt was good enough to challenge for the win, a feat he hopes to accomplish this year.
“We had a car good enough to win last year,” said Ambrose, who finished 19th last year, “but we had a motor lay over with around 100 laps to go. We had heaps of speed so if everything hangs together, and I keep my head screwed on straight, we should be close to the front all night.”
While leading laps last year is Ambrose’s favourite memory from his trip to the IWK 250, he is quick to acknowledge the event as the best short track race he has ever seen or been a part of.
“The atmosphere is incredible,” said Ambrose. “I was impressed with the huge crowd, the competition, and the other racers, the great facilities, and the awesome oval. I’m really glad to be going back this year.”
Ambrose added the support the race offers for the IWK Children’s Hospital is a big part of his wanting to come back, and that he hopes to be able to bring his own family this year to enjoy the event with him.
“It is such a family atmosphere, with the Chisholm’s (track owners) and everyone else at the track being so hospitable,” said Ambrose. “And with all of it helping support the IWK, it makes me want to enjoy the weekend with my family.”
Since its inception in 2007 the IWK 250 has raised more than $80,000 for the IWK Health Care Centre in Halifax.
Ambrose, originally from Tasmania, Australia, started in NASCAR in 2006 in the Camping World Truck Series. In 2007 he stepped up to the Nationwide Series, where he is a two-time winner. In 2008 he moved to the Sprint Cup Series. Late in 2010 he was hired to drive the No. 9 car for “The King” of NASCAR, Richard Petty, at Richard Petty Motorsports. After eight races this year Ambrose is 21st in overall standings with one top five finish, and two top 10’s.
Ambrose will drive a car in the IWK 250 fielded by Antigonish’s Nova Racing, as a teammate to Donald Chisholm and George Koszkulics. Car sponsor announcements are expected in the near future.
The 2011 edition of the IWK 250 weekend presented by Steve Lewis Auto Body kicks off Friday July 22 with races for the Napa Sportsman and Maritime Legends. The highlight of the weekend is Saturday July 23 with the IWK 250 for the Parts for Trucks Pro Stock Tour.
Riverside International Speedway is a 1/3-mile high banked asphalt oval located in James River, between New Glasgow and Antigonish, at exit 30 off Trans Canada Highway 104. Montréal, April 20, 2011 - Another of the world's most prestigious single-marque competition series, the Porsche IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge by Yokohama, will complete the 2011 Grand Prix du Canada support-race program next June 10, 11 and 12. Over thirty competitors, driving specially prepared Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars for competition, will be ready to race on Sunday morning on Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve. For the IMSA sanctioned series, which last competed in 2008 at the Grand Prix du Canada, this event marks its return to Montreal.
"Spectators at the Grand Prix du Canada greatly enjoyed the performance offered by drivers of the Porsche IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge during their first visit here in 2008," said François Dumontier, President of Grand Prix du Canada. "Last year, the late announcement of the return of our event on the FIA schedule prevented us from concluding an agreement with their series. Back in 2008 at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve, German driver Dino Steiner collected two podiums, including a race win and a third-place finish, while American Tony Rivera finished second in the first event before winning the second round. Another American, Bob Faieta, was the only other driver to walk up the podium steps twice, finishing third in the first race and second in the final event.
This year, Venezuelan and Florida resident Henrique Cisneros drove his NGT Motorsport GT3 to the winners circle in the first two rounds of the Cup Challenge, sweeping the season opener double-header in the 12 Hours of Sebring. Three Canadians - Perry Bortolotti of Ottawa, Torontonian Marco Cirone and Randy Oswald of Pickering - are competing full time in the series, whose next event will be held at Miller Motorsport Park, Utah, the series' last stop prior to the Montréal meeting.
The IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge by Yokohama features semi-professional drivers racing head to head in the largest single-make series in North America. Powered by one of the world's most successful race cars, the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car, the multi-class structure of the series teaches drivers essential skills for an eventual career in the American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patrón. The series is divided into two classes; the Platinum Cup, featuring the more powerful 2011 and 2010 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars, and the Gold Cup, which includes 2005.5 - 2009 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars. Throughout Merrittville Speedway’s history … there have been stories of many families where second … third and even fourth generations have shared an involvement in the sport. One such family is the Wood Family where in 2011 … two cousins have some big projects ahead of them.
Cousins Nick and Austin Wood have virtually grown up in the local racing community and each will celebrate the 60th Anniversary Season in their own way.
12 year old Nick will join students from across the Niagara Region at Fort George in Niagara-on-the-Lake as a part of the eighth annual District School Board of Niagara’s Heritage Fair this coming Tuesday. Nick will spend the day talking about his project he put together that covers much of Merrittville’s history like he did recently successfully at Westmount School in Thorold where he attends Grade 6.
“I spent about an hour or so with Nick,” relates Merrittville Speedway’s Reunion Committee Chairman Rick Kavanagh, “he really had some great questions … it’s thrilling to see the younger generation taking such an interest in our heritage.”
About the time Nick finishes up for the day … his 16 year old cousin Austin will be preparing to take to the track with his new project after Saturday’s Test and Tune postponement. After several seasons in the Turn 4 Collision 4 Cylinder Division – the Thorold High School Student will be a Hoosier Stock Rookie - driving the former Kevin Aube #3 which is now the Brian’s Tire #38. Tuesday Night’s new date will be the second time he has been on the track this season although engine problems cut short his track time in last week’s Pete Bicknell Driving School.
“In the few laps that I was able to get in … the car felt really good,” commented Wood, “definitely a lot more power … and it’s a different driving technique … I so wanted to get as much seat time as I could.”
Austin’s problems were related to a bearing failure and since then the power plant has been repaired by Joe Fioravanti. After practice, Wood will face a big test right away with a 60 lap Feature April 23rd on the schedule.
It was only a matter of time for Austin to get behind the wheel of a race car as while growing up he would be in the grandstands cheering on his uncle Scott and several years ago his dad Chris who raced himself as a team-mate to Wayne Conn in the Sportsman Division back in the day. One day Austin raised the question, “Can I race sometime?” with the answer … maybe next year we can put together a 4 Cylinder and as they say the rest is history.
“That first season … I attended the driving school too,” remembers Austin, “the first time on the track was my first time driving any kind of car ever … I thought I was going so fast … but I got told otherwise in the pits.”
Wood actually drove one event last season in the Hoosier Stock Division, “it was the final event of the season at Humberstone,” added the Grade 11 Student, “it was really something to run with the top guys … I can’t wait for a full season.”
For his rookie season, Austin plans on concentrating on Humberstone and Merrittville with some trips to Ohsweken as well. While his team-mate Sam Rodgers will remain in the 4 Cylinder Division in 2011, his former #38 was sold to the Kocariks for Kourtney and both of those are stories that also need telling this season.
Recently Nick announced that when he gets to be Austin’s age that he too would like to get behind the wheel of a 4 Cylinder. The longtime member of the PartSource Kids Club has begun to help out on his dad’s car – putting it together in the off season and keeping it clean and waxed through the season.
In the off season Nick and Austin are both active in the Thorold Athletic Association playing hockey for the Thorold Blackhawks. With Nick preparing to move on to the Bantam level next season as a goalie he no doubt is watching his favourite Carey Price for some pointers as they battle the Boston Bruins in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Funny thing is though … his favourite team is the Toronto Maple Leafs. We can always hope for next year.
“My grandfathers starting taking me to Thorold Junior B Games,” thanked Nick, “my grandmother and mom have always been involved in power skating and figure skating … so it was only time that I took to the ice myself.” Nick and his grandfathers still attend the Thorold Junior B Games where Nick helps with the between period Puck Toss.
Nick’s grandfathers are former racer and L. St. Amand Enterprises Wall of Fame Member Lyndon Wood and Phil Manning who while as an owner/operator supported Scott’s racing through his Phil Manning Trucking Company before retiring.
On the ice Austin played for the Thorold Midget Red House League Team.
Beyond his rookie season in the Hoosier Stocks, Austin would like to work his way up the racing ladder with thoughts of one day competing against his uncle Scott – a driver that he still looks up to to this day.
About to complete Grade 11, Austin is thinking of learning a trade after high school. While working summers for his dad’s Wood and Company Landscaping business he spent time at Ken Cosgrove Auto Repair and Machine as a Co-op Student.
“I’d like to apprentice as a welder,” looks ahead Austin, “I have experience doing it through school and such … but I think it’s something that really interests me.”
Since he got started in racing, Austin has enjoyed support from the Thorold Tim Horton’s and select St. Catharines locations and they will join him again on the Brian’s Tire Repair #38. “I got my first win last season,” boasted Wood, “it was a double feature night at Humberstone … I didn’t know what set-up to go with but it worked out real good … before a caution – I had built up almost a straightaway lead.”
While Austin has a goal of racing against his uncle … Nick probably would like to show up his cousin one day.
Merrittville Speedway’s rich history is made up of many stories of it’s racing families. With third generation driver Austin Wood on his way and the same love for the sport developing in Nick – the cousins can only rely on their heritage. One that will keep the celebration going well beyond the Thorold track’s 60th!

TALLADEGA, Ala. – Call it Talladega Superspeedway math. Four wide plus two deep equals one fantastic finish. Sunday’s Aaron’s 499 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race concluded with a pack of eight cars spread out four wide across the track, all crossing the finish line within a blink of the eye. It took video replays to conclude that Jimmie Johnson had nipped Clint Bowyer for the victory by 0.002 seconds, matching the closest margin of victory since NASCAR began using electronic timing.
The race also equalled the NASCAR record for the most passes in a race, set last year at Talladega Superspeedway. There were a total of 88 lead changes among 26 drivers.
“When you’re four wide coming across the finish line, that’s a pretty good race,” Johnson said. “There was just so much going on at the end of that thing coming to the stripe.
It originally appeared that the sprint to the finish would come down to a battle between Jeff Gordon, who was being pushed by Mark Martin, and Clint Bowyer, who was being pushed by Kevin Harvick. But as that quartet came out of turn four and entered the tri-oval, Johnson and Dale Earnhardt Jr. dipped down to the low side and barely squeezed past the Gordon-Martin combo.
Meanwhile, just before the pack reached the finish line, Carl Edwards and Greg Biffle got into the mix on the high side near the wall, and all eight cars roared across the line within a fraction of a second of each other. Gordon finished third, Earnhardt fourth, Harvick fifth, Edwards sixth, Biffle seventh and Martin eighth.
“If you didn’t like that finish, you’re crazy,” Bowyer said. “That was an unbelievable finish. I hope people enjoyed it, because it looked pretty wild through the windshield.”
Several drivers agreed with Bowyer’s assessment. The new two-car tandems that have become all the rage at restrictor-plate tracks have enabled cars to gain speed and make passes, something that had been more difficult during the days of pack racing.
“There is some technique required now, instead of just running wide open all the time and sitting there in a guy’s tire tracks,” Johnson said. “There’s some work and skill required. I think this racing was fun. When you have this many lead changes in a Cup race, that’s a good thing.”
The final pass occurred at the last possible moment. Gordon and Bowyer ran side by side in the middle of the track through turns three and four, enabling the Johnson-Earnhardt combo to make a late charge through the tri-oval.
“They were worried about racing each other and left the bottom open, and we had momentum on our side and off we went,” Johnson said.
Bowyer said he was hoping that Gordon and Martin would shift toward the bottom of the track in an effort to block Johnson, a move that Bowyer felt would have given him the victory.
“I saw them coming, and (Gordon) and I were drag racing off each other and trying to break each other’s momentum,” Bowyer said. “I was like, ‘Oh no. Block ‘em, block, ‘em.’ I knew if they had dipped down to block them, that we had the race won. But we came up just short. It’s frustrating.”
Earnhardt said he was willing to push his Hendrick Motorsports teammate to the victory because their tandem did not seem to work as well when Earnhardt’s car was in front and Johnson was doing the pushing.
“I was more comfortable pushing Jimmie. I think that way was the faster combination for us,” Earnhardt said. “When we got to the white flag (indicating one lap to go), I got on the radio and told Jimmie not to lift, no matter what.”
Johnson never did, and afterward he gave Earnhardt the checkered flag to thank him for his help in getting Johnson to Victory Lane.
“Junior was more worried about the team having a good performance than anything,” Johnson said. “We worked together all day, and in the end he was responsible for this win. I can’t thank him enough.”

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Mike Conway, coming back from serious injuries suffered in a crash late in the 2010 Indianapolis 500, overtook Ryan Briscoe in Turn 6 of Lap 72 of 85 and went on to lead to the checkered flag of the 37th Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach.
Conway is the first first-time winner of an IZOD IndyCar Series race since Briscoe in Milwaukee 2008. It was Andretti Autosport's first victory since June at Iowa Speedway. Five different teams were represented in the top five.
"His comeback is now complete," said team owner Michael Andretti, whose first and final Indy car victories came at Long Beach. "The first time we put him in a race car, I could tell he had potential. I'm just so happy he was able to (win) this early and win one of the greatest races here in Long Beach. I'm just so proud of him and the whole Window World Cares team."
Dario Franchitti, the reigning series champion, finished third to move back into the championship points lead. James Hinchcliffe, competing in his second IZOD IndyCar Series race, was fourth, and Alex Tagliani gave Sam Schmidt Motorsports a season-high fifth place.
Earlier in the day, Sam Schmidt Motorsports won the Firestone Indy Lights race with Connor Daly behind the wheel of the No. 77 Mazda Road to Indy/SSM car. Daly inherited the lead when the car of teammate Josef Newgarden nosed into the Turn 8 tire barrier of the 1.968-mile, 11-turn circuit and went on to win under caution.

Toronto, Canada (April 17, 2011) – Robert Wickens enjoyed a solid start to the 2011 Formula Renault 3.5 Series with the Canadian claiming the pole and a second place podium finish in the first race held on Saturday, followed by a fifth place in Sunday’s second outing at Spain’s Motorland Aragon Circuit. Competing this season for the UK-based Carlin outfit, Wickens exits the opening round sitting second overall in the Driver Standings.
The 22-year-old from Toronto, backed this season by Marussia Motors, enjoyed a perfect start to the weekend claiming pole position for Saturday’s first race. Firing himself around the 5.43km Spanish track in 1m42.901s, Robert topped the 26-car field on his return to the ‘World Series by Renault’ where he first made his European open-wheel racing debut in 2008.
Saturday’s 25-lap race didn’t quite go to plan for the 2010 GP3 Series Runner-Up. Dropping back to fourth after losing out under braking into the first turn, Wickens was then faced with the challenge of clawing back position. Confident in the pace of his car though, Robert knew his opportunities would come and none more so than on lap 11 when he darted by Daniil Move for second place at the hairpin. America’s Alexander Rossi claimed the victory followed home at the checkered flag by Wickens in second and France’s Nelson Panciatici in third.
Sunday’s qualifying effort proved to be a source of frustration for Wickens. A series of yellows hampered Robert’s flying runs – not least on his third lap, traditionally when the tires on the Formula Renault 3.5 Series cars are at their optimum. Disappointed to be seventh quickest on the timesheets knowing the pace available to him, the afternoon’s race would at least provide an opportunity to make up ground.
Immediately up into fifth at the start, he held station for the first leg of the race until the mandatory pit-stops. Unfortunately a slower than expected stop, for two new rear tires, cost Robert valuable time and potential track position – having been ahead of Rossi, who would eventually finish second. After the field cycled through the stops, Robert remained fifth and that’s where the Canadian would take the checkered. Estonian Kevin Korjus won the race with Rossi second and home-favorite, Spain’s Albert Costa completing the podium.
“My goal coming into this weekend was to leave as championship leader so I’m a little disappointed not to have achieved that,” stated Wickens. “Second isn’t too bad though, we’re coming away with a decent points haul. It was good to get the pole on Saturday. I obviously expected to translate that into a win but lost out at the first corner. Today’s issues were unforeseen but for my first time competing here at this track, I’m satisfied with a pair of top fives and I can’t wait to head to Spa next, a track I know very well and enjoy racing at!”
