Next stop, double secret probation

LONG POND, Pa. - Kurt Busch was docked 100 driver points Friday, fined $100,000 and placed on probation until the end of the year for reckless driving and endangering a crew member on pit road. Car owner Roger Penske also was penalized 100 owner points because of Busch's infraction. "We felt like we got everybody's attention," said Robin Pemberton, vice president of competition. "We felt like the 100-point penalty, the $100,000 was substantial."
NASCAR placed Busch on probation until Dec. 31. With the penalty, Busch fell from 11th to 17th in the Chase standings. The top 12 drivers are in the final 10 races for the title.
Busch apologized on Monday and said he regrets his behavior on the track.
"It's a bit surprising, but safety on pit road can't be compromised," Busch said outside his hauler. "I understand that. To me, it's a matter of making sure everyone is safe on pit road."

11th in Little 500; Homecoming At Delaware Next For Ryan Litt

From Litt Racing P.R. (Wednesday June 6, 2006) – Ryan Litt endured a difficult and eventful night at the Anderson Speedway to come home in the 11th position in the gruelling Little 500 event during the US Memorial Day weekend.

After getting caught up in an on-track incident, dealing with a disastrous pit stop, and overcoming a problem with his seat belts that caused severe back pain, Ryan and his team were happy to be running at the finish and able to return home in one piece, with the knowledge that a top-5 finish was definitely in the cards had Lady Luck smiled on the team even just a little bit.

The 20 year old is excited about the next event on the team’s schedule and his first event with a wing on the #07 BS&B Radiator, OTC/SPX Tools Beast/Claxton sprint car this season. The event is the team’s home race at the Delaware Speedway, just 30 miles from the team's home base in Lyons, Ontario, Canada on Friday, June 8th and is the only visit by the Auto Value Bumper to Bumper Super Sprints tour to Delaware this season. Ryan and the #07 BS&B Radiator/OTC-SPX Tools team are excited to be performing in front of their home fans, family, and friends.

Delaware is a special place for Ryan for another reason besides being his home track. The ½ mile paved oval was the site of his very first event behind the wheel of a winged sprint car in 2005. Ryan was 16th fastest in time trials that night, finished 3rd in his heat after leading briefly, and finished 14th in the feature after a late race spin took him out of contention for a top 10 finish – Not too bad for a rookie.

Last season, during his full time campaign on the AVSS tour, Ryan improved significantly on his previous performance by taking the feature win at Delaware on June 9th, 2006 - his first feature win in a winged sprint car. Ryan later took home another winged sprint car feature win last season, on Labour Day weekend at the Berlin Raceway in Michigan.

Ryan and the team would like to thank all their sponsors for their continued support during Ryan and the #07 Beast/Claxton Sprinter’s 2007 season, including OTC/SPX Tools, BS&B Radiator, BRR Media, BOC Gases, Leaf Racewear, and Kolors by Kropy.

For more information on Ryan, the car, and the team, including schedules, photos, merchandise, and contact information, please visit Ryan’s official website at www.RyanLitt.com.

TSN: Villeneuve criticizes Hamilton

Apparently, JV has replaced Eddie Irvine as F1's bitter guy on the sidelines.

From TSN
"Jacques Villeneuve says [Lewis] Hamilton's aggressive defensive moves off the starting line should draw some sort of warning from FIA and he's surprised at the amount of leniency shown by the governing body.
"When will these chopping moves stop?" Villeneuve tells Autosport magazine. "Lewis is not getting penalized for these things and his behaviour off the startline has started to look the way Michael (Schumacher) used to."
"So far, he has been lucky, so we'll see if it carries on. He makes progressive moves that would have got some of the other drivers black-flagged."

Toro Rosso Drivers Challenge Local Karters

Story and Photos by Paul Pedicelli

Toro Rosso drivers Scott Speed and Vintantonio Liuzzi hit Kart-o-Mania near Montreal to challenge KCM racer Jesse Lazare in a pre-Grand Prix showdown.

Lazare raced them last year but wanted a rematch, and while times weren’t recorded, Lazare got the quickest time in his session against Liuzzi, Speed, Schuler (a local racer) and Speed’s brother.

Kimi Räikkönen Visits Montréal School

Story and Photos by Paul Pedicelli

MONTRÉAL, QC – Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro driver Kimi Räikkönen went back to school on June 6, far from his native Finland, as he paid a visit to the children of Coronation elementary school in Montréal, QC. The 400-plus students, most dressed in red, awaited eagerly for the 27-year-old star driver to appear, with many holding up papers bearing Ferrari’s prancing-horse emblem.

All were keen to see the “ice man” and share a day in his life as a driver in the fastest sport on earth with the most famous team in motorsport history.

Kimi was kept busy with a multitude of questions from the speaker and later from the children, with questions ranging from how he goes so fast to what type of transmission his car has. Also on the agenda was the race with miniature F1 cars on a replica Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve, presented by students that are winners in the World Robotics Championship. Needless to say Kimi’s car came out the winner in that one!

The day’s visit was capped off with racing on the simulator (having Kimi as driving coach, no less) and the students getting autographed cards from the ace driver. Definitely a day the kids won’t soon forget!

Formula BMW USA: A Busy Week for Petriello!

Montreal, Quebec, June 5, 2007- Sportimage.net- After stepping up to the second step of the podium after his first race in the Formula BMW series, Jeffrey Petriello from Terrebonne is determined to taste victory this week-end on the Gilles Villeneuve track.

However, it’s important that I concentrate for the qualifying session held on Friday and to perform the best I can during both races,” explains Petriello.

To Be Prepared!
“It is difficult for me to predict the outcome for this week-end since many drivers are very familiar with the track. I continue to work with the team’s footage of races from last year. Since the last race, we have practiced with virtual simulation. In addition, I have been visiting the track regularly for the past week to better understand the details. This is something that helped me tremendously for my first race and during my years in karting,” explains Petriello.

Fourth place in the Championship
After only two races out of 14, Petriello is in fourth place in the championship with 15 points from Daniel Morad of Ontario and one point from Alexander Rossi. “I feel comfortable with my present situation. I will work hard to accumulate points this week-end in order to get closer to first place in the championship. We’ll see the outcome once the checkered flag has dropped,” explains Petriello.

In Association with Cinema Guzzo
It has been less than one month that he signed with the energy drink 24 Power and it is now Cinema Guzzo’s turn to support Petriello. “I am extremely happy to associate myself with Cinema Guzzo,” explains Petriello with the presence of Mr. Vincent Guzzo. “It is my greatest pleasure to drive a car and represent Cinema Guzzo. They’ve given me confidence and I think I will make them proud,” concludes Petriello.

Pre Entries Open As “CANADIAN SPRINT CAR NATIONALS” Preparation Continues

OHSWEKEN, ON - The third edition of the “Canadian Sprint Car Nationals” presented by Arrow Express is scheduled to take place at Ohsweken Speedway, the Styres family owned three-eight mile clay oval just outside Brantford, Ontario on Saturday, September 15.

As pre entries begin to file in, early indications are encouraging as five regional sanctioning groups have once again cast their support behind the fall event which in only two years has gained a reputation as a “must see” on the sprint car calendar.

In conjunction with the “Arrow Express - Canadian Sprint Car Nationals” running on September 15, “Village Pizza; Village Café; and Sit-N-Bull Construction” will host “The Night Before the Nationals” on Friday, September 14. The Friday portion of the weekend will feature the third running of the “Village Pizza - Ohsweken Shootout” along with a pair of 15 lap “A” Main’s that will guarantee the winners a position in the Saturday feature starting grid. Also on the card will be a full Mini Stock program with a series of sprint heats lined up by a random draw.

The third annual “Arrow Express - Canadian Sprint Car Nationals” will retain a one day format but will take on a slightly new look. As in the past, time trials will once again set the starting line-ups for the heat races with six cars being inverted in each heat. There will however, be a couple subtle differences from there on. First of all there will be six heat races, up from four the previous two years. The winners of the heats will transfer directly to the “A” Main and be lined up according to their time trial results. The dash races will then be eliminated in an effort to shorten the length of the program with hope of an earlier finish.

In keeping with the initial goal of adding to the purse each year and building the event into the premier sprint car race in the north-east, the “A” Main winner will collect $7,000 for their efforts, up from $6,000 in 2006; and $5,000 in 2005 while positions 11 through 26 will see an increase with the final position collecting $600. Again in 2007, all prize money will be paid out in U.S. currency. The Saturday show will be a “Sprint Only” event with no support class.

The Southern Ontario Sprints who have called Ohsweken Speedway home since their inception have signed on once again. Keith Dempster driving an Ohsweken Speedway house car will lead the pack of SOS competitors with the likes of Adam West, Warren Mahoney, Kevin Job, and Fred Cade always a threat to stand in victory lane at Ohsweken.

From New York State, the Empire Super Sprints are once again backing the event. Last year, ESS “Rookie of the Year” Steve Poirier stood in victory lane at the Canadian Nationals with a popular win and is among the early entries for this year’s event. Lance Yonge, Justin Barger, Jeff VanDusen and Jessica Zemken are all expected to be on hand when the gates swing open for the third running.

Also from New York State, the ASCS Patriots have again signed on. Like the SOS and ESS, the Patriots have been instrumental in the success of the Canadian Sprint Car Nationals from day one. The team of Bryan Howland and Chuck Hebing are poised to challenge for the win this year as the green flag drops.

The State of Michigan will be represented as the ASCS Sprints On Dirt organization has once again signed on to support the event. Dustin Daggett has indicated that he will return for another try at capturing the Nationals crown along with Tim Norman, Brett Mann and Dain Naida.

Returning for their second year as an affiliate, the NRA Sprint Invaders of Ohio will see Tim Allison and Phil Gressman carrying the NRA Banner. Car Owner Ron Hammons who had Dale Blaney wheeling one of his entries in last year’s event has indicated he will also return with the three cars with regular driver Mike Dussel wheeling one of them.

With independents such as the Rick Wilson team from Joyceville, Ont., Kyle Patrick of Tilbury, Ont., Mark Broughman of Hillsdale, Mich., J.R. Stewart of Bellefontaine, Ohio, and a possible Mike Woodring entry, the field is poised to be as strong as ever. The previous two runnings of the event have averaged 80 cars and with this year’s $7,000 winner’s share of the posted $55,000 purse the competition is expected to once again be fierce.

Make your plans now to join us at Ohsweken Speedway on September 14 & 15, 2007 for the “Arrow Express - Canadian Sprint Car Nationals” weekend. Be sure to watch for more race information and sponsorship news as plans are finalized. Log on to the official website of Ohsweken Speedway at www.ohswekenspeedway.com and click on the “Canadian Sprint Car Nationals” ad on the left side of the home page for rules and entry forms.

KYLE MARCELLI SWEEPS THE ONTARIO FORMULA FORD CHAMPIONSHIP OPENING WEEKEND

PHOTO: ex-Formula 1 racer Derek Daly who's son Conor was Kyle Marcelli's teammate this past weekend.

Barrie, ON (June 3, 2007) – 17 year old Kyle Marcelli’s racing career is off to a roaring start as he swept the CRDA Shootout at Shannonville this past weekend, claiming both pole positions, leading every lap and winning both races in dominant fashion.

Marcelli rolled into the Friday test sessions never having driven the Shannonville circuit and not quite knowing how he would stack up against the considerable talent and experience of competitors like Shane Jantzi and Matt White. “I was a little nervous heading into the weekend because there is a lot of good racers in the series, and Shane and Matt have a ton of experience at these tracks,” said Marcelli. “I was happy to be near or at the top of the time charts fairly quickly on Friday so my confidence was good and I was excited about getting the season started.”

On Saturday Marcelli made it known he was going to be the guy to beat as he posted many impressive lap times and claimed the first pole of his career. At the start of the race he was challenged early on by Matt White but managed to hang on to the lead and as the laps wore on increased the gap to a comfortable distance and cruised home, with fists pumping, to the first victory of his career in just his first start.

The story was much the same Sunday. Marcelli claimed the pole position in convincing fashion and was confident for the race. Under threatening skies he took off from Matt White once again and lap after lap increased his lead to bring home his second victory in just his second start.

“I can’t tell you happy I am to be here today,” said the youngster. “It’s even more special to win in front of my family because they have done so much to help me realize my dream of becoming a professional racecar driver,” he added.

“I also want to thank the whole team at Brian Graham Racing for all of their hard work and their confidence in me. They have been running three cars here this weekend and for two of them to finish on the podium just shows what a great team of guys Brian has put together – my car was awesome all weekend.”

Kyle Marcelli has a commanding lead in the Ontario Championship but will shift his focus this weekend as he travels to Montreal to take part in the Formula Ford support race at the Montreal Grand Prix Formula 1 event.

“After having the kind of weekend I’ve just had I can’t even tell you how excited I am to be heading to Montreal. I will be racing on the circuit named after the great Gilles Villeneuve and in front of tens of thousands of race fans. I have also heard that a lot of the F1 mechanics and engineers like to watch the Formula Ford race there so it will be cool to run in front of them as well.”

Kyle Marcelli, a resident of Barrie, Ontario, has started his professional career by contesting the entire Ontario Formula Ford Championship this season in preparation for one off events in Formula Zetec and the Star Mazda series.

Canadian Touring Car Championship : GT Racing scores another double

Drivers Bilodeau and Borgeat split the Shannonville double-header

MONTREAL – GT Racing drivers towered again over their competition last weekend by winning both races of the Castrol Canadian Touring Car Championship presented by Toyo Tires double-header in Shannonville. Driver-owner Charles-Andre Bilodeau scored his third consecutive win Saturday, and team mate Etienne Borgeat took the spoils Sunday.

Qualified second, Bilodeau edged Scott Nicol’s car in the first corner and stayed in front until the end to win Saturday’s race. “Scott’s Civic was really fast and forces us to raise our game,” underlines Bilodeau. “It was important for us to strike early or risk getting distanced. After that, the plan was to keep focused and stay error free all the way to the end. That’s often easier said than done.” Borgeat turned a 21st spot on the grid (mechanical woes during qualifying) into a top five finish after an amazing comeback.

Sunday, Etienne Borgeat took advantage of an error by team mate Charles-Andre Bilodeau to get in front and push all the way to the finish, scoring his first win of the season. “I had qualified fifth for the second part of the double-header, so I had to work hard again,” recounts Borgeat. “I came back on the pack one by one. When I got to Charles-Andre, he gave me a good fight. We had a lot of fun. I got by him when he made a mistake between corners 4 and 5 and I’ve been able to keep the lead until the end. We got the checkered flag almost side by side.”

GT Racing cars’ successes in Shannonville are the result of a sustained team effort. “We have to emphasize the amazing work the mechanics did this week,” insists Bilodeau. “They gave us great cars once again. Our chief mechanic, Eric Cote, outdid himself. Not only did he give us fast cars, but reliable cars. That’s real hard to achieve.”

All efforts are now directed at preparing for the Grand Prix of Toronto, the next stop on the Championship schedule. “We’ll spend some time in St-Eustache over the next couple of week to test using urban course settings,” confirms Cote. “We’re heading to a tight, bumpy and dusty course… It’s always hard to find the right balance for conditions such as those.”

GT Racing wishes to acknowledge the precious support of its partners: Ultramar, idCAD, Pavnat, Sequoia Travel, Provan, SKF and Base.

NASCAR: Bill France Jr. has passed away

My NASCAR reporter, Stan Creekmore, is at the rain-delayed NASCAR Nextel Cup race at Dover. He told me they just announced that Bill France Jr. passed away earlier today.
More on this story as details emerge.

Here is the WIKI link on the life of Bill France Jr.

UPDATE 2:27 >> Can't find anything concrete on this yet, other than Fox Race Trax has the following, linking to a photo gallery: "PHOTOS: Bill France Jr. (1933-2007) "

UPDATE 2:36 >> Stan Creekmore just sent me the following:

"NASCAR officials announced today that Bill France Jr., 74, passed away at approximately 1 p.m. EST while resting comfortably at his home. His wife, Betty Jane, son Brian and daughter Lisa France Kennedy survive France.
France, the son of NASCAR founder Bill France, was often called Jr., shepherded the sport of stock car automobile racing from the early '70s, as the sport grew past its southern roots and onto the national scene with television coverage from ABC, CBS, ESPN, TNN and other networks.
He took the sport first to Australia and then to Japan as he explored possible paths to increase the international presence of stock car racing. Five years ago he turned the day to day control over to his only son, Brian France while his daughter, Lisa France-Kennedy, rose to the top of ISC (International Speedway Corporation), another France family owned corporation which controlled racetracks around the country.
France will long be remembered as a pragmatic man who dealt with a firm-unwavering hand, as the sport of stock car racing took its place in the world of professional sports."

UPDATE 2:55 >> NASCAR has posted the following:

Bill France Jr. dies at 74
By Mark Aumann, NASCAR.COM
His father may have been the architect of NASCAR, but throughout his life, Bill France Jr. proved to be the ultimate general manager.
His plaque at the International Motorsports Hall of Fame may put it best: "Other than the founding of NASCAR itself, Bill Jr.'s appointment to leadership is probably the most significant event in the history of the sanctioning body."
France Jr.'s ability to transform his father's original vision into something greater than the sum of its parts was his greatest accomplishment. Under his three decades of leadership, NASCAR evolved from a regional sport to one with a world-wide fan base. He was a trailblazer in the field of corporate sponsorships and the guiding force behind a television contract worth billions of dollars.
"In life you've got rules you have to live by, and you have to have people to enforce those rules," France Jr. once said. "If you don't have rules, you have chaos. Basically we are the government in the little country of motorsports.
"Our rules are the statutes and the laws of this little country. To gain and keep the confidence of everyone involved with NASCAR, those participating need to know, as evidenced by our behavior, that the rules are applicable to everyone and are enforced fairly."
France Jr. suffered a mild heart attack in 1997 while in Japan for a NASCAR exhibition race, and was diagnosed with cancer in 1999. He has never revealed what type of cancer he had.
Although his cancer was in remission, he handed off day-to-day duties of running NASCAR to his son, Brian, in late 2003.
In March, France Jr. was admitted to Halifax Medical Center under the care of his personal physicians but was released to his doctor's care.
William C. France, chairman of the board of directors for International Speedway Corporation, died Monday at home. He celebrated his 74th birthday in April.
Born in Washington, D.C., in 1933 but raised in Daytona Beach, Bill Jr. was immersed in the sport of auto racing from the time he could talk. Being the boss' son, that also meant a measure of responsibility.
After attending the University of Florida and a two-year stint in the U.S. Navy, France Jr. returned to make racing promotion his full-time occupation. He parked cars and sold concessions at the old beach and road course, then took a hands-on approach to his father's dream of building a superspeedway in the swampland west of Daytona Beach.
"We went seven days a week for 13 months to build the speedway," France Jr. recalled. "We went from 7 in the morning to 7 at night, and worked in the winter until it got dark."
In many cases, that meant operating the equipment himself.
"I ran a motor grader some and a bulldozer, but mostly I was on a compactor," France Jr. said. "I did a little of this, that and the other. I even had a mule out there one time pulling trees out of the swamp.
"Everything that was motorized back then got stuck in the swamp. I said, let's try a mule. That didn't work either."
With miles of strip malls and restaurants along International Speedway Blvd. today, it may be difficult to imagine how wild that tract of land would have been 50 years ago.
"We'd have big piles of stumps that we had to burn," France Jr. said. "I remember seeing a big rattlesnake out here one day. They asked me, 'Where did you find him at?' I pointed to where I found it.
"This one man had an ax and he swung it into a stump and we heard rattles buzzing all over the place. The area was full of snakes. We cleared out of there pretty fast."
France Jr. had an uncanny ability to recognize potential growth and take advantage of those opportunities. While in the service, he developed a relationship with Californian Bob Barkheimer, a move which strengthened NASCAR's ties to the west coast.
He loved motorcycles and competed in the Baja 1000, which led to the addition of a motocross race at Daytona International Speedway. The Daytona Supercross is now one of the highest-attended events at the track and correlated with the growth of Daytona's Bike Week.
France Jr. served as vice president of NASCAR for six years before his father retired in 1972. France Jr. negotiated a deal with R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. to sponsor NASCAR's top-tier series, then went after television partners to expose his product to potential fans.
Following successful ratings for flag-to-flag coverage of the Daytona 500 by CBS in 1979, France Jr. was able to leverage the broadcast rights to the point where he negotiated a $2.4 billion contact with FOX, NBC and Turner Sports for the 2001 season.
Jim Hunter, former president of Darlington Raceway, said France Jr. was open to suggestions but only to a point.
"Bill always let you speak your peace," Hunter said. "And if you disagreed with him that was OK, if he thought you had a good reason. But he had a way of looking at you over his glasses after a while, and when he did that you knew he'd had about enough of you. Bill France didn't lose many arguments."
Still, France Jr. never lost sight of what made NASCAR popular in the first place: its drivers.
"If you go back and look and think about it, NASCAR started off in 1948 with a group of racecar drivers who were in their 20s and 30s and started racing," France Jr. said. "They all came up together, and then they went out together. Then you had the Fireball Robertses of the world ... but then came David Pearson and Richard Petty. Then came Darrell Waltrip.
"I remember when Waltrip put out a statement that said the old guys better watch out because there are some new kids in town. Then came the time when he had to step back. So this is another cycle we're going through now, that's all."

Jacombs Racing set to introduce another international racing star to stock cars?

During the past year, Dave Jacombs has put Canadian open wheel stars Patrick Carpentier and Andrew Ranger behind the wheel of his stock cars. Former Canadian road racer (and former CASCAR competitor) Robin Buck has also driven for Jacombs Racing.

A hint on Jacombs' website indicates that the creative team owner is preparing to put Canadian two-wheel legend Miguel Duhamel into the seat of his #8 car. Over the past 12 months, no other team owner has done as much as Jacombs to put his series in the spotlight.
