NASCAR: Hawk resigns

According to my NASCAR reporter, Stan Creekmore (who is in the media room at Lowe's Motor Speedway) NASCAR has confirmed to him that Don Hawk, NASCAR's Director of Regional Racing Development (NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series), tendered his resignation on Wednesday.

Weather watchers....

Jeff Wilcox at Delaware Speedway just told me that their track is dry and they're still a go for tonight, but one good downpour would most likely be the end of their show for this evening. He suggests keeping an eye on the Delaware website for the most current updates.

Just had a look at the Ohsweken Speedway site and they were to make a call about their Friday night show at 2 p.m. UPDATE (2:40 P.M.: OHSWEKEN JUST CANCELLED THEIR SHOW FOR THIS EVENING!

We welcome any track or series to send us updates so we can help spread the word about shows going ahead or being cancelled.

Good luck everyone! Is there such a thing as an anti-Rain Dance? Here is the weathermap for the region. Here is another.

OSCAAR's First Race of 2006 Set for Friday, June 2 at Kawartha Speedway

By Don McLeod and Sandy Macfarlane / May 26, 2006

The weather created a change in plans which put the first OSCAAR race of 2006 at Kawartha Speedway. There was a mixed bag of reactions Sunday afternoon when the Flamboro race had to be called. Weather set the tone for the day in typical unpredictable spring-like fashion.

But there were several drivers waiting at the gate and fans on the way, all anxious to get racing. Unfortunately all had to turn around and go home. Everyone is now looking ahead to the famous Kawartha Speedway.

The high-banked, 2-3 lanes of racing, 3/8 mile oval has become legendary for great stock car racing. Many OSCAAR Outlaw drivers count Kawartha among their favourite tracks. While last seasons witnessed only one visit to Kawartha, this year there are two stops, June 2 and August 11. The June 3rd race of 2005 saw one of the biggest crowds and car counts of the year.

With Kawartha's opening night on June 2, there should be plenty of fans in attendance and a full field of Outlaw drivers ready for action. John Fletcher and the #61 team had one of their best nights of 2005 while winning the season opener at Kawartha. It was a great evening of racing with fantastic weather and a big crowd.

John will go for a repeat winning performance but will have to fend off a pack of hungry contenders. Everyone realizes that there is a clean slate for 2006 and will work hard to achieve a strong opening night performance. If you made plans for something else on next Friday night - change them! There is simply no better place to be than at Kawartha Speedway on opening night. See you there! Let's go racing!!!

Pierre Bourque: The Newest Addition To Racing

“New Diversity Driver Already Turning Heads”

OTTAWA, Ont (May 26th, 2006) - - At a time where driver diversity is at a high peak, the newest newcomer to the program, Pierre Bourque storms onto the racing circuit with goals as strong as any veteran driver, victory. The Ottawa, Ontario (Canada) driver has got a jump start to his racing career by taking an early stab at the ARCA RE/MAX Series.

The ARCA RE/MAX Series is well-known to be a circuit where up and coming competitors get their feet wet into the fierce competition of stock car racing. Thus far, Bourque has made an impression.

Latching himself with 1995 ARCA champion Andy Hillenburg has already started to pay off for the successful businessman. Under the guidance of Hillenburg, the duo headed to the treacherous and fast short track of Winchester Speedway in Winchester, Indiana earlier this month for his “stock car debut”.

The goal for Bourque in practice was feel the track and get comfortable with his Chevrolet Monte Carlo. Goals were easily met in practice after turning a lap good enough for 27th best (17.356 seconds, 103.711 mph). Without the proper security to guarantee the credentials for the starting grid, Bourque would have to race his way into the lineup by qualifying on time.

During his two-lap session, Bourque turned a lap of 16.974 seconds or 106.045 mph quick enough for 24th on the starting grid. It was a competitive lap for the rookie, allowing him to further learn about the cars, series and his team.

Short tracks usually bring out a brawl and that race was no exception. Throughout the course of the 202-lap event, Bourque raced hard and clean. While many used the race as a chance to aim towards a championship, Bourque used it as a rookie session. By the time the checkered flag flew, the No. 11 Full Metals Minerals Chevrolet was 13th. Many teams lost their cars to the rollback, but not this rookie. He performed brilliantly leaving the team with confidence and Bourque satisfied.

“Winchester was a grueling race, but I am very happy with the way that weekend went,” recalled Bourque. “We made the show, raced well and the car was in one piece, I don’t think we could have asked for anything more.”

With a clean finish under his belt, Bourque recently headed to the open test session at Michigan International Speedway with Andy Hillenburg and his crew in toe preparing for Bourque’s first Superspeedway attempt in the ARCA RE/MAX Series later this year.

22 teams endured an eight hour test with Bourque turning in the 16th fastest time of 42.290 seconds equaling a fast speed of 170.253 mph. While it wasn’t the fastest time on the board, the AHR (Andy Hillenburg Racing) was exceptionally pleased with their efforts.

“The Michigan test went very well,” continued Bourque. “Tuesday’s test marked the first ever time I drove on a Speedway and it was exciting. We did exactly what we wanted to do, gather seat time and post some respectable laps. We surpassed the team’s expectations for the event, so no one on this team is feeling off the pace.”

The remainder of the 2006 racing season will be a very busy one for Bourque and Andy Hillenburg Racing. In addition to selected starts in the ARCA RE/MAX Series, the group will run the full NASCAR Busch East Schedule beginning in a few weeks aiming for the championship and Rookie-of-the-Year honors.

Thursday (May 25th, 2006) marked the second testing session of the week for the team leaping from Superspeedway to the short track at Greensville-Pickens Speedway. Greensville-Pickens is the first race on the NBE tour and the team wants to get a jump-start on the rest of the competition.

Drivers in any form of auto racing deal with the heat. Thursday, Bourque experienced that first hand as sizzling temperatures in the mid 90s greeted the team. Before climbing into his car for the first time at the demanding short track, the team had an open mind.

Bourque kept a solid pace all day long turning competitive times and just a half-second off of the fastest car at the track driven by Sean Cassie under the direction of former NASCAR Busch East champion Andy Santerre.

“The test was a learning curve,” remarked Bourque. “I’ve never experienced the heat before like that in a racecar and it was a good experience, it prepares me for the future. Overall, the test went exceptionally well and I know that we’ll be in good shape when we come back for the race.”

With testing complete and the start of the 2006 NBE (NASCAR Busch East) Series drawing near, Bourque feels that he is ready for this new endeavor.

“We are ready to make a difference and I want everyone to know that we are not going in to run last,” explained Bourque. “I am very comfortable with my driving abilities and I feel having the guidance and coaching of Andy Hillenburg has already made me feel in the winner’s circle.”

The 2006 NASCAR BSE schedules consist of 11 races beginning with the Busch Series East 150 at Greensville-Pickens Speedway on June 10th, 2006. Bourque will pilot the No. 10 Full Metals Minerals entry all season.

“While the goal is to win, I want to finish the races this season in the Busch East schedule. We’ve set a couple goals for ourselves for the rest of the year and I think we can achieve them. The goal is to use the remainder of the year as a “test session” preparing for 2007 which we plan to run the full ARCA RE/MAX Series schedule. I know that Andy Hillenburg and his staff will provide me with the equipment allowing me to be very competitive off the truck, I’m really looking forward to the future.”

In the coming weeks, Bourque will unveil a new racing website.

Montreal, Québec (25 May 2006) – Attracted by the success of A1 Grand Prix’s (A1GP) first racing season, major London investors have committed to providing full funding for the Series, assuring a strong future for the first ever World Cup of Motorsport.

A1GP has engaged Nomura to raise an institutionally targeted debt financing prior to an Initial Public Offering (IPO), to support the growth of the Series over the coming years. RAB Capital plc, a leading investment manager listed in London, acting as lead investor along with other financial institutions, has committed sufficient capital through equity investments and convertible stock to complement the debt financing arranged by Nomura with the intention that A1 Holdings Ltd will IPO in the forthcoming months.

Through this financing, A1 Grand Prix is able to commit to a long term future with sponsors, suppliers, promoters and national A1 teams.

Commenting on the new financing, A1GP Deputy Chairman and Co-Founder, Tony Teixeira said: ‘Since the launch of A1GP in March 2004, the company has gone from strength to strength. I am delighted that after a strong first season, A1 Grand Prix has attracted the support of high profile investors committed to progressing the Series to the next level. In A1 Grand Prix, we have a unique and innovative product, a fact which has been recognized by RAB Capital plc and Nomura. I would like to thank all parties involved and look forward to a bright future for A1 Grand Prix, supported by these established City institutions.’

A1 Grand Prix is now finalizing the race calendar for the 2006/07 season ahead of an announcement to be made shortly. Demonstrating the popularity of the Series, grandstand tickets for the first race of the season at Circuit Park Zandvoort in the Netherlands on 1 October 2006, sold out in just five days.

A1 Team Canada finished 10th in the inaugural season of the A1 Grand Prix of Nations with the highlight of the year undoubtedly Sean McIntosh’s last-to-first victory in Round 8’s Feature race in Indonesia in February.

Prime Minister pledges to tackle street racing

Vancouver, B.C. - Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced today that the government will introduce legislation this spring to crack down on street racing. “Let’s be clear, street racing isn’t about kids having fun. It's reckless, dangerous, and all too often it kills." said the Prime Minister. “That is why our government will introduce legislation to tackle this serious problem head on.”

The effect of the legislation will be twofold. First, the legislation will create a new Criminal Code offence for street racing, one which will result in stiffer sentences for street racers. Second, the legislation will introduce driving prohibitions for those who are convicted. There have already been a number of street racing deaths this year.

In January, a Toronto cab driver was killed instantly when his car was hit by an alleged street racer. Less than a week later, four young men were killed as a result of a street racing accident in Vancouver. Today’s announcement marks the latest step in the government’s effort to crack down on crime.

Earlier this month, Justice Minister Vic Toews introduced legislation to put an end to condition sentences for serious offences and establish mandatory minimum sentences for gun crimes. The Prime Minister pledged to continue moving forward on the government’s agenda of making Canadian communities safer.

Grueling start for Team Fastline Motorsports at Barrie

Courtesy Bruce F. Mehlenbacher

BARRIE, ON (May 22, 2006) – It was not a good day for Fastline Motorsports team drivers Jeff and Jim Lapcevich, as the team finished 14th and 16th respectively in Monday’s CASCAR Super Series GO-RACING.CA 300 at Barrie Speedway.

“I managed to get into problems on the very first lap of the race and that pretty much ended my chances for a good finish,” said team driver Jim Lapcevich. “We had a good car but it was just too little too late after getting down a couple of laps at the start,” added Lapcevich, who placed 16th after starting 22nd. “I can’t say enough about the EMCEA Transport / Tim Hortons Team. They put in a strong effort all weekend under some very extreme conditions all weekend long.”

Scott Steckly won the GO-RACING.CA 300 followed closely by Don Thomson Jr. in second and J.R. Fitzpatrick in third.

“There is no question we had a top-ten car in Barrie until we got caught up in some lapped traffic that got us down some laps,” explained Jeff Lapcevich, who finished 14th after starting 12th. “The day got even more complicated when we lost a cylinder and you’re not going to pass Donnie (Thomson) on seven cylinders. We had no choice but to put the Tim Hortons / EMCEA Transport Chevrolet Monte Carlo on cruise and try to stay out of trouble.”

Based in Hamilton, Ontario, Fastline Motorsports is a two-car race team that has become one of Canada's most prominent racing enterprises in both oval track and road course competition.

The next CASCAR Super Series race of the season will take place Saturday, June 10 at Autodrome St-Eustache located west of Montreal, Quebec on the 4/10ths-mile flat asphalt oval.

Ryan Litt Ready for Little 500

Courtesy Tommy Goudge, Litt Racing P.R

The Little 500 is not your average sprint car race. In fact, it’s not even your average auto race. With 33 traditional sprint cars - each pushing out upwards of 850 horsepower - taking the green flag 3-abreast to begin 500 gruelling laps on a high banked ¼ mile oval, complete with pit stops in cars that were never designed for pit stops, the Little 500 is not your average anything.

The historic Anderson Speedway in Anderson Speedway is the venue, and the 58th Annual Pay-Less Little 500 is the event. The Little 500 purposely shares many similarities with the Indianapolis 500, including the format for time trials, and how the starting grid lines up. To even qualify for the event – which is the world’s richest pavement sprint car event - in the unique 4 lap time trial format is an accomplishment in and of itself.

In his Little 500 debut last May, Lyons, Ontario, Canada’s own Ryan Litt managed to come home with a 7th place finish – pretty good for a rookie with a hastily assembled pit crew and very little experience in a full size sprint car. This season, with more sprint car racing experience under his belt, a better prepared pit crew, and a new sponsor in OTC/SPX Tools on board, the 19 year old has his sights set squarely on a top 5 finish or better. It may be a lofty goal, but given last year’s result, definitely not an unattainable one.

Before the Little 500, teams will have a chance to tune up for the race on Wednesday night, May 24th in a USAC National Sprint Car event featuring a 50 lap feature – just one tenth of the distance the drivers will face on Saturday night, May 27th. On Thursday May 25th it will be time for first round qualifying for the big show. Friday May 26th features second and final round qualifying for the big race, and Saturday is the big day.

Ryan and the team would like to thank all their sponsors for their continued support during Ryan and the #07 Beast/Claxton Sprinter’s full time campaign on the AVSS tour this season, as well as in these special events, including OTC/SPX Tools, BS&B Radiator, Velocity Wings, BRR Media, BOC Gases, and Leaf Racewear.

For more information on Ryan, the car, and the team, including schedules, photos, merchandise, and contact information, please visit Ryan’s official website at www.RyanLitt.com .

CASCAR: TIGHT TRACK BITES BEAUCHAMP & TEAM MOPAR IN SEASON OPENER

Ron Beauchamp Jr. and the Mopar Parts team were among the quickest cars all weekend at the first CASCAR Super Series race at Barrie Speedway, however tight competition often results in contact, and in this case it caused the Mopar Dodge all kinds of trouble.

During practice and qualifying on Saturday the Mopar Dodge performed pretty much as expected. “We had the kind of car we expected” said Ron Beauchamp Jr. “Earlier in the month we were here and ran a few laps to see how the car handled and it was pretty much the same. When we have room to race, we’re fast”. Beauchamp and Team Mopar had no trouble posting quick laps and were among the top runners during the 50 lap qualifying races. Beauchamp would start the 250 lap main event in seventh.

After a one day delay due to weather, the Mopar Dodge took the green flag on Monday afternoon and once again had the speed and handling necessary to have a successful day. “Things were good for the first half of the race” said the driver. “Our lap times were consistent and we just wanted to have something for the end of the race”.

Following routine scheduled service for tires and fuel Beauchamp was back on track but in heavy traffic. “The car was just as we expected it to be, however there was some pretty aggressive driving going on. We wound up getting bumped and pushed into the back of another car and that pushed the hood up making it difficult to see. I was managing okay, but CASCAR made the call that we had to come in and that took away any chance of a top finish”.

The Mopar Dodge pit crew removed the hood to allow better visibility and Beauchamp was back on track to try and make up as many positions and collect as many championship points as possible. Beauchamp would wind up 13th at the end of day.

“It’s unfortunate how things worked out, and we’ve got plenty of work to do on the car now” said Beauchamp. “But we’re headed to St Eustache for the next race and we’ve won at that track before so we’re pretty motivated”.

The CASCAR Super Series is the only National Stock Car Racing series with events scheduled this year at great oval tracks including Kawartha Speedway and & Cayuga Speedway along with road courses and temporary street circuits like the Grand Prix of Edmonton & Trois Rivieres. You can keep up with the latest news on the CASCAR Super Series and check out the complete 2006 racing schedule by logging onto the website at www.cascar.ca. And be sure to watch the CASCAR Super Series races on Rogers Sportsnet all year long.

My wife's watching the American Idol final (blech!) so I'm going to post some of the press releases and news that people have been nice enough to send our way...... here goes.

CASCAR: CHALLENGER MOTOR FREIGHT/LOGEL’S AUTO PARTS DODGE TEAM OPEN 2006 WITH TOP TEN FINISH

Brad Graham and the Challenger Motor Freight/Logel’s Auto Parts Charger Dodge team hit the track at Barrie Speedway over the weekend for round number one of the 2006 CASCAR Super Series. While the results placed the team with a solid top ten finish, everyone felt a little disappointed with the final placing.

Photo by G. MacPherson / Inside Track

The Challenger Motor Freight/Logel’s Auto Parts Charger Dodge was quick right from the first practice session and driver Brad Graham was able to not only run quick time trial laps, but also completed his 50 lap heat race with third place podium finish. Not only did this secure the sixth starting spot for the 250 lap main event, but the heat races award full race championship points toward the final standings. “Our car was fast all weekend” stated Graham after the event. “It’s easy to forget about the points in these heat races because you get so focused on starting position, I’m glad we were able to get a good finish”.

The 250 feature race was delayed until Monday afternoon due to inclement weather however the cold temperatures throughout the weekend didn’t slow down the car or the pit crew. “The first 100 or laps or so everyone was doing pretty good staying out of trouble, but then things got kind of heated later in the race” said the driver. “We were doing our thing, running up front in the top five or six all afternoon long and then we decided to make our pit stop for tires and fuel. I thought the guys did an awesome job to get our service and get us back on track before the pace car came around, but CASCAR saw it differently.”

Brad was ruled not to have made it out of the pits before the pace car and was scored one lap down. “That deflated us, no question about it” said a dejected Graham. “There seemed to be some confusion on a couple of issues during the race and that’s frustrating. We had the car to run up front all day but that judgment sure worked against us”.

Still among the fastest runners all afternoon Brad Graham and the Challenger Motor Freight/Logel’s Auto Parts Charger Dodge did score an 8th place finish in the main event. “While initially we were a bit disappointed we’ll move on and get ready for St. Eustache in a couple of weeks. It’s a track we ran well at last year and we’ll be prepared to do that again” said the driver.

The CASCAR Super Series is Canada’s only sanctioned National touring stock car racing series competing from coast to coast. CASCAR stages events at the most famous oval tracks in Canada and will also compete at the Grand Prix of Edmonton and the Grand Prix of Trois Rivieres. CASCAR: J.R. Fitzpatrick Opens Season with Sizzle at Barrie in New Sponsor’s Debut

From Maudsley Motorsports

(Barrie, Ontario) – With a new sponsor on board, J.R. Fitzpatrick and his Milwaukee Electric Tool Chevrolet Monte Carlo arrived in Barrie on Victoria Day weekend for the first race of the 2006 CASCAR Super Series season.

Fitzpatrick entered the event, riding his ninth-place finish in the 2005 championship campaign, and was 12th on the speed chart with a lap of 14.504 seconds following practice, but less than a quarter of a second off the fastest time.

A couple of hours later, with a qualifying position on the line, Fitzpatrick stepped it up and blitzed a lap of 14.410 seconds, good enough for the fifth-fastest time of the day, and almost a tenth of a second better than practice. “We were really pleased with that run. We fought a lot today. We had a broken carburetor, and some other things, but the guys worked hard all day and got me really pumped up before we went out.”

The next time the #84 machine hit the track was for a 50-lap qualifying race under the lights on Saturday night. J.R. rolled off third behind teammate Don Thomson Jr., and D.J. Kennington, but Peter Gibbons was on the outside of Fitzpatrick on the start and grabbed third position, shuffling J.R. back to fourth. The young driver went on the hunt, trying to find a way behind the two-time National champion, and after a couple of close calls, Fitzpatrick got position for good heading into turn three. He would complete the pass, but never caught Thomson, or Kennington, who finished first and second, with John Ryan bringing his mount home third. “That was really cool, passing Peter. I’ve always been a little intimidated by him, but tonight was the first time I had ever even stayed on his bumper. Tonight I was fast enough to pass him as well.”

Sunday’s feature was cancelled on account of rain most of the day, and run on Monday afternoon. Fitzpatrick rolled off fifth for the start of the go-racing.ca 250. He was quick to fall into line and ride through the early portion of the race. The third-year driver explained, “This is a tough place. You have to be around at the end and I know I have to have patience. The guys kept me calm, and I was able to stay out of trouble. I didn’t push on the start, and later, when Kerry Micks was faster, I just let him go. I knew if I save my car, then I’ll have a shot at the end.”

J.R. brought his car to pit road for two tires and fuel just after the halfway point of the race and returned to action just inside the top-ten. He worked his way forward, as his setup allowed him to be one of the only cars to be able to run the outside of the race track. Fitzpatrick also showed his quickness, picking up the Good Year award for turning the fastest lap during the race.

As the laps wore down, J.R. was able to attach himself to his teammate while the pair worked through traffic, and avoided trouble to be shown in sixth on a restart with just 20 laps to go, trailing Thomson, Micks, Kennington, Mark Dilley, and Scott Steckly. One lap after the green dropped, Kennington spun, and Micks visited pit road with damage from the contact. This moved Fitzpatrick to fourth before Dilley spun in oil with only a handful of circuits remaining. The three-lap sprint to the finish saw Steckly, Thomson and Fitzpatrick cross the line in that order, as none could advance their positions. J.R. was thrilled with the solid finish to open the season. “After the way Saturday started, this is an awesome end to the weekend. I wanted a change to the car partway through when we made our pit stop, and Ted talked me out of it. I have to hand it to him, because the car just got better and better the later we went in the race. I was able to work the outside better then almost everyone. That made it a little easier working through traffic.” For Steckly, it was his first career Super Series victory, as he led the final 107 laps, and held off a number of charges to take the checkers.
1. Steckly, 2. Thomson, 3. J.R. Fitzpatrick, 4. Brown, 5. Dilley.

Unofficial Point Standings (after one event) – 1. Thomson (249 points), 2. Steckly (238), 3. Brown (230), 4. J.R. Fitzpatrick (228), 5. Micks (223).

It was an excellent way to open the season, and J.R. is already looking forward to event number two, June tenth at Autodrome Ste. Eustache, just outside of Montreal. “This was a great way to start the season, but last year we got off to a good start at Delaware, and then had trouble at Ste. Eustache. Hopefully this year will be different. We’re going to try to ride the momentum of this week to next race.”

CASCAR: The Quest for an Even Half-Dozen Titles Began in Barrie for Thomson

From Maudsley Motorsports
(Barrie, Ontario) – As the 2006 CASCAR Super Series season opened last weekend in Barrie, Hamilton’s Don Thomson Jr. and his Home Hardware Chevrolet Monte Carlo were prepared to defend the championship for the fifth time, as Thomson looked to add a sixth National championship to the trophy case.

The weekend started with practice on Saturday afternoon, and Thomson was the second-fastest car of the session, turning a lap of 14.325 seconds, a mere .049 ticks of the clock behind Doug Brown. A short while later, it was payoff time and Thomson ripped off a lap of 14.313 seconds around the 3/10th-mile track, besting Brown by .036 seconds, and claiming his CASCAR record 26th pole position.

Festivities continued with a pair of 50-lap qualifying races, and Don led the field to the green in the first twin event, with second-place starter D.J. Kennington tucking into line behind the black # 4. Thomson would have his way with the field, pacing all 50 laps and keeping D.J. at bay to pick up the win. “The car was really good early in the race. It got a little tight later in the run, but nothing major. It was a great way to start the season. We got the pole and led every one of the 50 laps.”

Sunday night’s feature would get ‘frozen out’ leaving the go-racing.ca 250 to be run on Victoria Day Monday. Thomson brought the field to the green with Brown alongside him, and immediately jumped into the lead. “I knew right off the bat we had a good car. We made a couple of changes to the car Sunday morning and it was awesome as soon as the green dropped.”

Thomson would pace the field, surviving a number of restarts before taking an opportunity to pit on lap 142 under yellow for new right side tires. “That’s a little later than when we wanted to pit, because that was at the end of a long green-flag run.” A number of the leaders darted to pit road for service, and the Fitzpatrick Motorsports Team whipped off a tremendous stop, getting Don back into action in sixth. The traffic on the tight track was tense, and while Thomson was trying to move to the front, he was also under attack from behind. He was still shown in sixth with just over 50 laps to go, but started to climb back into contention, reaching fifth by lap 230, with his teammate, J.R. Fitzpatrick behind him.

Shortly after a lap 230 restart, Kennington and Kerry Micks collided in front of Thomson, but Don did a tremendous job of avoiding the wreck and keeping the wheels straight. He found himself in third with a handful of laps remaining and only Mark Dilley and Scott Steckly - who took the lead when Don pitted – in front of him. As the field went green near the closing stages of the race, a layer of oil coated turns one and two. Steckly made it through, while Thomson made contact with Dilley as the pair tried to slow down enough for the corner. “It was a bad deal. I saw Mark start to slide, and I was all over the brakes, but I just slid into him. There was a lot of fluid down there and nothing anyone could do.”

This would leave Thomson on Steckly’s bumper for the final three-lap run to the finish, but Don couldn’t do anything with Scott as he chased him to the checkered flag. Teammate J.R. Fitzpatrick filled the final step on the podium. “We’ll take this run, and the points lead to start the season,” Thomson explained after the race. “I think we were better than Scott at the end, but never got a chance to prove it. This place is very tough to pass on, and we just needed the track position that we lost pitting when we did. Scott pitted on the caution before us and it was enough to get him the win.”
1. Steckly, 2. Don Thomson Jr., 3. J.R. Fitzpatrick, 4. Brown, 5. Dilley.

Unofficial Point Standings (after one event) – 1. Don Thomson Jr. (249 points), 2. Steckly (238), 3. Brown (230), 4. J.R. Fitzpatrick (228), 5. Micks (223).

Event number two for Don Thomson Jr. and the Fitzpatrick Motorsports Team will be Saturday, June tenth at Autodrome Ste. Eustache, just outside of Montreal. Don is excited about visiting the flat 4/10th-mile track, where he has tasted victory before, “Ste. Eustache is a great track to race at. It’s a challenge, because both ends are so different. Turns one and two are so tight, but three and four have almost a double apex to it. We always seem to run well there, so I’m pretty pumped up about it.”

McIntosh to test street skills in Monaco

Montreal, Canada (May 24, 2006) - Canada's Sean McIntosh will make his debut on thestreets of Monte Carlo this weekend as the World Series by Renault forms part of the support-race package to the 64th running of the illustrious Monaco Grand Prix, 25-28 May.

McIntosh, who celebrated his 21st birthday last Sunday, will get his first taste of the legendary3.34km street course in tomorrow's single practice session before going on to qualifying onSaturday and race Sunday. Unlike most rounds in the 2006 World Series by Renault, whichare usually double-headers, Monaco will play host to just one race for the 30-stronginternational line-up of F1-aspirants.

While Monaco is undoubtedly the most famous street race in the world, Sean is no strangerto the demands of such circuits having experienced the format on several occasions in NorthAmerica and most recently in Durban, South Africa in the A1 Grand Prix of Nations. The Canadian, racing for Belgium-based Team KTR this season, triumphed on the streets ofVancouver back in 2002 as the Fran-Am Championship supported the Molson Indy in hishome-town while January's A1GP street spectacular in South Africa presented Sean with atop-ten finish in the Feature race.

Following a disappointing opening weekend in the World Series last month in Belgium, where he was taken out of a guaranteed top-ten finish in the first race and failed to qualifyfor the second one, Sean hopes to get his season kick-started in Monaco with a strong finishand a handful of points before the watching eyes of the F1 community.

Previewing his first taste of Monaco Sean commented:
"I'm looking forward to getting back in the car following a very character testing weekend inZolder last month. The Monaco Grand Prix is probably one of the three most famous racesin the world alongside Le Mans and the Indy 500. To be able to compete there at this stageof my career is pretty exciting, I'm hoping it's the first of many visits!

"It's probably going to be quite challenging and unique because it's a street circuit. It's morepermanent than some of the other street courses I've raced on in North America and recentlyin South Africa in A1GP but it's going to be the usual bumpy, tight and twisty that's for sure.I'll have to work my way into it in the limited practice we have but it will be the same foreveryone. Like all street courses though, qualifying will be key to the outcome of the race asovertaking opportunities are usually pretty limited."

The action in Monaco starts with tomorrow afternoon's solitary practice session beforequalifying on Saturday and the race on Sunday morning.

CASCAR: Steckly Wins First Career Race at Barrie

Scott Steckly celebrating his first career CASCAR Super Series win at Barrie Speedway on May 22.

Barrie, ON. After failing to win a CASCAR Super Series race in his first seven years in the series, Scott Steckly of Milverton, ON has finally done it. The driver of the Erb Group sponsored Dodge Charger won the season opening race at Barrie Speedway. Steckly had a handful of second place finishes but he was unable to breakthrough until last Monday. The race was also Steckly’s first in a Dodge Charger. Scott carried momentum into the first race of the year, after posting some of the quickest times during Mopar Day a few weeks back.

Photo by G. MacPherson / Inside Track

The race at Barrie Speedway was scheduled to be run on Sunday, May 21 but because of some very cold and rainy weather it was postponed to Monday. Qualifying for the opening race was set for Saturday and that followed by twin- 50 lap races. Scott had the 10th fastest time, around the tight 1/3 mile tri-oval track of Barrie Speedway. After qualifying the field was split in half and the cars would race 50 laps and their finishing position in the heat race would determine where they would start in the 250 lap feature race. Scott started the heat race in fifth position and would pass #9 Mark Dilley early on to move into fourth. Following a caution later in the race Steckly was unable to shift his car into fourth gear off the restart. As a result he was rear ended by Dilley causing significant fiberglass damage to the bumper of the car. The Erb Group pit crew was able to fix the bumper by using a lot of duct tape, making it look just like new. Steckly wound up finishing the race in 5th place, meaning he would start the feature in 10th.

The race got underway on Monday, under very cold conditions. Barrie Speedway is a very hard track to pass at, so any position gained is well earned. Scott was able to bide his time in the top-10 until lap 50 when he was finally able to pass #39 Dave Whitlock, to move into ninth. However, during a caution on lap 75, #22 crew chief Greg Gibson made a race winning decision to pit earlier than all of the other cars on the lead lap. The move caused the team to fall back to into 11th but Steckly quickly made up those positions. During the pit stop the team changed two right side tires and added fuel to the car. The Erb Group Charger was able to pass a few cars during the green flag run and was up to seventh by the time a caution hit on lap 138. However, all of the cars that were ahead of Steckly had yet to pit, and during this caution they all chose to come in. Steckly assumed the lead at this time. It was a lead which he would never relinquish. The #22 Erb Group race car was so dominate on this day that Scott quickly opened up a 5 second lead on the entire field, nearly lapping half of the cars. That was until a caution on lap 181. But, once the green flag dropped Scott got right back on the gas and opened up a big lead again. In the closing laps there were several cautions. First, during a green flag/ white flag restart, the second place car of Mark Dilley spun out, which meant there would be another green/ white restart. This time, Steckly had five-time series champion Don Thomson Jr. on his bumper. However, on this day Thomson was no match for Steckly as he won his first race in dominating fashion, by leading the final 122 laps.

Following the race Steckly was thrilled about winning his first race saying “it's just awesome. I want to thank everyone on the crew who helped us out, plus Dodge and Mopar. I want to thank Erb Transport, too. The car was just hooked up. We made a lot of adjustments after the 50 lap heat race [on Saturday] and we planned to pit early and get track position. We knew the car would be there to the end." He also added that “what a fantastic way to start off the year in my new Dodge Charger”.

The next race in the CASCAR Super Series is June 10 at the Autodrome St-Eustache, in St-Eustache, Quebec.

In the drive for the 2006 CASCAR Super Series Championship, of which Scott presently sits in 2nd place, the 22 Race team is proudly sponsored by: Erb Group of Companies, AW Millwrights, International Dealers: ALTRUCK International, Diamond International (Edmonton, AB), Lewis Motors Sales, D.H. HINCHCLIFFE IMPRESSES IN FIRST THREE ATLANTIC EVENTS

“Two top fives and several turned heads”

Oakville, Ontario – May 24, 2005. – Canadian Forsythe Championship Racing (FCR) pilot James (Hinch) Hinchcliffe (Emexis Integrated Solutions, Indeck, #3), has made the move to the ultra competitive Champ Car Atlantic Series presented by Yokohama. With a series purse in excess of $2 million, the series is seeing an explosive group of talented drivers fighting for every race win.

For Hinch, the season started on a high note in Long Beach, California. The talented driver took his time getting up to speed as he continued to learn the track and his new Atlantic ride. Practice and qualifying went very well for the young Canadian as qualified the car in P5. Hinchcliffe would move forward in the race after sustaining constant pressure on his fellow competitors. One position would come after another driver’s retirement and another was gained on an excellent pass entering turn one off a restart. As the checkers flew, Hinchcliffe found himself on the podium joining race winner and his teammate as Forsythe would claim the first and third positions

Forsythe Championship Racing and Hinchcliffe then moved onto the Grand Prix of Houston. With a terribly bumpy racing surface and temperatures reaching 100 degrees, Hinchcliffe was on pace early qualifying the car in the fourth position. Knowing that he needed more, the team went to work to prepare for Saturdays qualifying session. Tragedy struck Saturday afternoon as the Oakville, Ontario resident did not turn a lap in the second session of qualifying due to a gearbox problem but fortunately, only dropped one position in the final qualifying order.

Saturday evening would be a busy one for the FCR team as they and eleven other competitors found engine problems related to the bumpy surface. The team was forced to change to a back up motor and would not be able to test it before race day.

At the start of the event, Hinchcliffe fell back to the sixth position but was relegated up the running order after a couple of cautions due to incidents. As the race began to wind down, the #3 FCR ride made a move for P3 and looked to have completed a clean move on the entry to corner one. The car being passed cut through the chicane and back onto the racing surface in front of Hinchcliffe and claimed the final podium position.

“My team and I deserve to have that podium,” explained Hinchcliffe. “They worked so hard the past couple of days replacing worn out parts due to the track conditions here in Houston. I am disappointed with the officials ruling on my position but am happy to gain another top-five result.”

After the event, Hinchcliffe and his team found out that the motor they put in his car was lacking straight line speed making his fourth place result that much more impressive.

Hinchcliffe would have little time off as the next event was the following weekend in Monterrey Mexico where the engine gremlins continued to hound the team. The team determined and fixed the problem during the practice sessions but they and Hinchcliffe were unable to work on the cars setup. During qualifying, Hinchcliffe claimed the 19th starting position and raced to an uninspiring 16th place finish. This was by far Forsythe Championship Racing’s toughest weekend as the team drivers lacked racing grip and were further down the running order then expected.

With two strong results in the opening two rounds, Hinchcliffe sits fourth in the overall Champ Car Atlantic Series point standings, which he claims, is not too disappointing. Looking forward, Forsythe and Hinchcliffe will begin preparation for the next round of the Champ Car Atlantic Championship presented by Yokohama at Portland International Raceway.

NBIS: DQ Something Different for Kids Day

DQ Something Different for Kids Day DQ Offering Up Treats, Free Youth Tickets

Fredericton, NB – Race fans always get excited about a great stock car event. But this weekend’s events have a little extra for the sport’s youngest fans. On Sunday, May 28th, Dairy Queen will present Kids Day at NBIS, an annual favourite for fans and drivers of all ages. The racing starts at 2pm, but the real action for the kids starts at 1pm with the pre-race autograph session in the pits. There were also be several other attractions for the youngsters.

Kid’s Day is an annual event, but this is the second year that Dairy Queen is sponsoring the day and in co-owner Steven Burns’ eyes, they made a huge impact.

“It’s always been a really popular event on our schedule, but last year DQ pulled it up another notch. They had a real presence and were very active, bringing their characters and some treats for the kids,” says Burns. “We had lot of happy kids and parents at the end of the day. You don’t even have to be a stock car fan to enjoy this kind of fun.”

The event includes an In-the-Pits pre-race autograph session from 1pm-1:45pm, where kids get to meet their favourite driver in the pits. Drivers enjoy the session as much as the kids since they don’t normally have time to interact with their youngest fans for an extended period prior to the race. They are usually busy prepping their cars.

There is also a candy scramble on the front stretch during intermission. Last year, the kids picked up 50kg of candy in less than 2 minutes. “They are the only thing faster than the cars on that day,” said Burns.

Dairy Queen has some surprises in store for the fans including free youth tickets. As part of their sponsorship, Dairy Queen is offering a limited amount of free youth tickets (ages 9-15) this week at Dairy Queen locations on Prospect St and Union St. in Fredericton starting on Thursday. Just ask for a free youth ticket upon purchase of any kid’s meal. By the way, children 8 and under are always free at NBIS stock car events.

In between off-track events, there will be points racing in the CARQUEST Pro Stocks, Martin’s Home Heating, and Coast Tire Street Stock Divisions. Autograph session takes place starting at 1pm with racing starting at 2pm.

Nice story on Nancy Bicknell....

Bicknell Garners Gater News 'Woman in Racing' DIRT HoF Award

By Tom Skibinski

ST. CATHARINES, Ontario, Canada -- The first lady in Canadian motorsports Nancy Bicknell joins Kim Jennejohn and Barb Anderson as co-recipients of the fifth annual Gater Racing News "Outstanding Woman in Racing" award during the 2006 DIRT MotorSports NorthEast Hall of Fame Induction ceremonies Sunday, May 28, on the Cayuga County Fairgrounds. This special award was initiated in 2002 to recognize outstanding contributions made by women in auto racing during a customary time of tribute to the legendary male drivers in our sport. The location for Nancy and husband Pete Bicknell's first date shouldn't come as much of a surprise to any race fan. They spent a Saturday night over 30 years ago sitting in the top row of the Merrittville (ONT) Speedway grandstand. When the final checkered flag fell that night, Pete asked Nancy what she thought about her first trip to a race track. Reflecting back, she remembers, "I had to be honest. I told Pete I didn't know a single racer all night." That was about to change.

Pete Shepherd update

INSIDE TRACK EXCLUSIVE:

Pete Shepherd III's mom Sharon just called with an update on Petey's recent news.

After several months, his visa papers came through last week to work in the States. Petey is staying with friends in the Charlotte area, but he has a condo on Lake Norman that he'll move into in mid-June.

It sounds like Roush's signing of Michel Jourdain reduced Petey's probable 2006 Truck Series outings to two (not sure which ones), but the young Canadian will have a full schedule of Silver Crown and ARCA outings to keep him busy.

According to Sharon, here are the planned Silver Crown outings, at this point: June 16 @ Kentucky; June 23 @ Richmond; July 9 @ Chicagoland; July 22 @ Milwaukee; Aug. 3 at IRP; Aug. 19 @ Springfield; Sept. 16 @ Iowa; Sept. 22 at Eldora (maybe) and Sept. 30 @ Kansas.

As for the planned ARCA races Petey will be in, they include: July 28 @ Gateway; Aug. 12 at Nashville; Aug. 18 at Michigan; Aug. 27 @ Milwaukee; Sept. 9 at Chicagoland; and Oct. 6 at Talladega.

In between all that, Shepherd's job includes working out with a personal trainer at Roush (where Petey has an office) and to soak up everything he can by being around Roush's Truck operations. He will also attend as many Truck Series races as possible. According to Sharon, if all goes as planned, he could be in a full-time Truck ride in '07.

Thanks to Sharon for the update and good luck to Petey. I can imagine lots of us will be planning some road trips to cheer him on.

Report: NASCAR plans Montreal test for June

Jeff Burton
TSN.ca Staff
5/23/2006 10:40:55 AM
NASCAR plans to test one of its cars at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal the weekend prior to Canada's Formula One race at Ile Notre Dame.
According to the National Post, veteran driver Jeff Burton could be the man behind the wheel of the Chevrolet Monte Carlo when it hits the track on June 19 or 20.
The test is seen as a precursor to NASCAR's announcement of a Busch Grand National race at the island circuit in 2007.
Burton, who would be racing at nearby Brooklyn, Michigan on June 18, says he hasn't been contacted for the test but would a willing participant.
"If I'm asked to test (in Montreal), I'll certainly find a way to make it happen," he tells the Post.

"I've been saying this for years, that the next step we need to take is into Canada," Burton explained. "We need to be there, to put on a good show that represents NASCAR and Canada well. There's no reason we shouldn't be there. It's a great market for us. We'd benefit from Canada, and Canada would benefit from our being there. It's win-win."
Burton was also the driver asked by NASCAR to test for them when the Busch Series considered expanding into Mexico last year.
"Our move into Mexico was received wonderfully, but - with no disrespect intended to them - Canada is, to me, more important. I think a Canadian race will be received even better.
"Every time I race in the bordering states, I see how many Canadian fans we have. Every week they ask me, 'When y'all comin' to Canada?'"
The 38-year-old has only seen the Montreal circuit on television but is confident the course will be more than suitable for Busch racing.
"If the track works for F-1, it will work for NASCAR," he tells the newspaper. "If the runoffs and safety barriers and garage areas work for them, it will be plenty, plenty good for what we'd be doing."
Speculation of NASCAR's arrival into Canada has been rampant for the last few years. However, the Florida-based stock car association has always played down the chances of a Nextel Cup race being staged north of the border. Series officials are working on getting a race in New York City and the American Northwest before it considers taking its premiere event across the border.

CASCAR: Dilley scores top-five finish in Barrie opener

Late-race spin on oil drops Dodge-sponsored Charger driver from second

BARRIE, ON – A fifth-place finish at a tough track like Barrie Speedway would usually be a satisfying result. But not when you’re in the hunt for the win with just three laps to go.

That’s the situation Mark Dilley found himself in on Monday afternoon following the season opening CASCAR Super Series race. The driver of the #9 Charger, sponsored by Dodge, started eighth in the 22-car field and worked his way through the pack by employing the outside groove.

By lap 180 of the 250-lap chase, the Barrie, ON racer was riding comfortably in second place, with his sights set on race leader Scott Steckly. Dilley won the lone CASCAR race at Barrie in 2005 and was looking to make it two in a row. But with three laps to go, Dilley and the rest of the field came upon an oil slick and assorted car parts in turn 2, during a restart. Following contact with several other competitors, the former CASCAR champ found himself facing the wrong direction and pondering what might have been.

Dilley was ultimately able to bring the #9 Dodge / Mobil1 / Exide / Leland Industries / Avenue Motor Works / CRS Trucking / NTN Bearings Dodge Charger home in fifth-place.

“I think we had the best car here,” said Dilley, after the race. “We came from the back after our stop and did it on the outside groove, where nobody else could run. With three laps to go, the racetrack was covered in oil and axels. We told people about it, and they told us that it wasn’t in the racing groove. Well, you saw the result.”

So while he knows fifth-place is very respectable, Dilley is frustrated at what might have been. “I think we had something for Scott [Steckly] in those last laps. I just wanted to make sure that I was out front of the third-place car [Donnie Thomson] enough before I thought about going to the outside. Whether we could have done it or not, we’ll never know.”

During time trial qualifying for the race, on Saturday, Dilley posted the eighth-fastest lap. He would later take fourth-place in the second 50-lap qualifying heat race, which placed the MOPAR-powered, #9 Charger sponsored by Dodge on the outside of the fourth row for the initial green flag.

CASCAR NOTES: Dodge Charger driver Scott Steckly won his first-ever CASCAR Super Series race, at Barrie, in his inaugural outing driving a MOPAR-powered CASCAR. Don Thomson Jr. and J.R. Fitzpatrick took the final two podium positions. The CASCAR Super Series returns to action on Saturday, June 10 at Autodrome St-Eustache, near Montreal, QC.

MULTIMATIC PANOZ DUO GRAB SECOND PLACE AT MID OHIO

Courtesy Multimatic Motorsports Team Panoz

Lexington - OH (May 21st, 2006) Multimatic Motorsports Team Panoz duo David Brabham and Scott Maxwell have continued their charge on the 2006 American Le Mans Series GT2 championship with second place today at the Mid Ohio Sports Car Course.

Brabham charged into second position from fourth on the grid and staged a titanic battle with the Flying Lizard Porsche of Wolf Henzler.

The Australian Panoz star had to use all his experience to keep the rapid German behind – the Porsche showing much faster straight-line speed. After 35 minutes, Henzler attacked at the end of the back straight – making contact with #50 Panoz. While Brabham caught a dramatic slide, his rival was not as fortunate, spinning the Porsche.

Unfortunately, the race fell under safety car conditions after 76 minutes – leaving the Brabham/Maxwell Panoz short of being able to complete the race on a single stop.

While most of the GT2 pack were able to pit straight away, the Multimatic squad were forced to wait to pit to ensure they could make it to the finish without an additional splash of fuel.

After their stop, the Panoz resumed in third place and Scott Maxwell later gained another spot when the leading Porsche of Jorg Bergmeister and Patrick Long suffered a broken driveshaft.

Maxwell brought the car home with a solid second place – the second podium finish in three races for the #50 Panoz Esperante GTLM. The #45 Porsche of Henzler and Johannes van Overbeek took the GT2 victory.

Panoz team-mates Gunnar Jeannette and Tom Milner were not as fortunate, the #51 Panoz again suffering from a return of the misfire issue which plagued the team in Houston.

Jeannette returned to the pits after the problem struck on his pre-race reconnaissance lap and the #51 car endured numerous long stints in the pits and behind the wall before having to retire.

"Second place was a great run for us today but we were a little unlucky with the timing of the first yellow flag period," Multimatic Motorsports Vice President and Motorsport's Technical Director, Larry Holt said.

"We could run 60 laps on a tank of fuel and the race went 119 laps – that meant we had a fuel window of one lap to ensure we could do the race on a single stop. We had to wait when everybody else dived in when it went yellow.

"The Long/Bergmeister Porsche really checked out into the distance at the start but Brabs charged up to second and had a great race with Henzler – that Porsche was all over us.

"Our car is really the equal or better than the Porsche through the turns – but we were getting blown away on the straights. Brabs would be six car lengths clear coming out of the Carousel, but Henzler would be all over him at the end of the straight.

"Gunnar and Tom had ordinary luck again. The car ran like a dream all week but when the problem struck in the race the guys changed everything including the replacing the steering wheel which is full of electronics.

"It looks like it may actually be a problem with the fuel system which doesn't raise its head until we have full tanks for the race. We thought we had broken a valve spring at Houston, but it now appears it was this issue that was causing our misfire."

Penske, Porsches Finish 1-2 At Mid-Ohio

Courtesy Ryan Smith

Lexington, Ohio - The Captain's cars have made American Le Mans Series history. Penske Racing's two Porsche RS Spyders finished 1-2 overall in the American Le Mans at Mid-Ohio, becoming the first LMP2 class team to post such a result in the Series.

Romain Dumas and Timo Bernhard captured their first overall Series race in the No. 7 Penske Porsche, coming from the back of the field for a monumental class and overall victory. Dumas went across the finish line by 0.424 seconds ahead of Lucas Luhr in the No. 6 sister car.

"As we came in to this weekend, we were most concerned about reliability from the last two weekends," team owner Roger Penske said. "I think this broke the ice, running against the Audis and the Dysons. You'll notice we've been real lucky with the four drivers we have; not one of them have made a mistake. Now we can say we've arrived and let's go racing."

The two Porsche RS Spyders showed their true potential as they were the only cars to lap in the 1:13-1:14 range. This was the first overall win for Porsche in the American Le Mans Series. The No. 7 Porsche is only the second LMP2/P675 car to win an overall race in the Series.

"When I had dinner last night with Timo, we decided the No. 1 target was clear: to win in the LMP2 class, just like in the first couple of races," Dumas said. "We figured we'd have to finish the race the best way we can. Then when I saw Timo had such a great start, I thought, 'Oh, now we have a chance.' Then with a good strategy of coming in a little bit earlier than we needed, and then with luck and the competition with our teammate, we got to finish first. It was for sure a great race between the team cars."

The deciding move came with an hour left. After Luhr pitted for tires and fuel at the 1:40 mark, Dumas came in for a fuel-only stop about 10 minutes later. Dumas felt the tires would be fine the rest of the way, and he was proven right. Needless to say, the mood from 24 hours earlier was completely opposite.

"Last night when I heard I had to move back because I was too light, I was disappointed," Bernhard said. "It was the perfect car. Then it became a matter of how we could get around the other competitors."

Intersport Racing's Lola B05/40-AER finished third in class and fourth overall at its home race. As a result, Clint Field and Liz Halliday retained their lead in the P2 championship standings over Maassen and Luhr.

The Audi R8 finished third overall and claimed its third straight LMP1 class victory. Dindo Capello and Allan McNish again drove a smooth and steady afternoon as they outlasted Dyson Racing's No 16 Lola, which went off track at Turn 3 near the two-hour mark and lost time in the pits during the resulting stop.

Dyson's Butch Leitzinger and James Weaver finished fifth overall and second in P1, followed by Autocon Motorsports' Lola EX257-AER and drivers Chris McMurry and Mike Lewis.

Capello and McNish are now off to the 24 Hours of Le Mans and a return to the diesel-powered Audi R10 TDI that won at Sebring in March. Meanwhile the R8 has one more race left in its competitive life, that coming July 1 at Lime Rock Park.

"It is a great result for us - another maximum points score to extend our championship lead," Capello said. "It was a struggle to get temperature into the tires; once we had some heat it was OK. But after each full-course yellow safety car period it took about five laps to get good grip."

Despite the class win and the 20 championship points, both drivers were disappointed not to take the overall victory. McNish said the Mid-Ohio track suited the RS Spyders with their lighter weight and nimbleness.

"We saw on Friday and Saturday that it wasn't going to be possible in our current situation to attack the RS Spyder around here," McNish said. "The weight difference is quite different. The start was a bit bizarre. Within 6 or 7 laps the Porsche had a good gap. I had Butch right behind me and from that point of view I was more in defense mode. We were struggling with grip and balance."

History wasn't limited to the P2 class. Olivier Beretta and Oliver Gavin won for the eighth straight time in the Series, back to Portland last year. Beretta and Gavin finished ahead of their Corvette Racing teammates Ron Fellows and Johnny O'Connell.

Beretta and Gavin moved past Karl Wendlinger, who won seven times between 1999 and 2000. Ironically, he teamed with Beretta in an ORECA Viper for several of those events.

"It's luck, and we've had that for sure," Gavin said. "But it's also that the team has done a fantastic job. We just seem to be getting it right. I look back when we first started driving together, we did make some mistakes and things weren't working so well. We knew that if we put everything together we'd get it right."

Gavin also said the race may have been won in large part at the start. He moved past the pole-sitting Aston Martin DBR9 of Darren Turner at the green flag. The move paid off in the end despite a couple of late yellows that bunched the field together. But Beretta, who drove the last stint, held strong.

"It was a great race, and Oliver did a fantastic job," Beretta said. "The only problems were the yellows. It was difficult for us the first four laps or so after the yellows (to keep the tires warm). It was a great race, and Oliver did a fantastic job."

Turner and Enge finished third in GT1, beating out teammates Pedro Lamy and Stephane Sarrazin by a scant 0.338 seconds. The Corvettes and Aston Martins will meet next at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

In GT2, Flying Lizard Motorsports won in class for the second time in three years at Mid-Ohio in its Porsche 911 GT3 RSR. Johannes van Overbeek and Wolf Henzler came back to win after an early off to beat the No. 50 Panoz Esperante GTLM of David Brabham and Scott Maxwell.

"I was almost next to him when I turned into his turn and drove a little on the curb and then on the grass," Henzler said. "Then he drove on the grass and shut the door on me. I thought the race was over, but I had a couple of good laps and came back behind him."

The Panoz finished second, a lap back. The other Flying Lizard Porsche, the No. 44 of Seth Neiman and Darren Law, was third. Henzler and van Overbeek were running second when the pole-winning car of Patrick Long and Jörg Bergmeister came into the pits while leading with a broken driveshaft.

Van Overbeek added to his lead in the class' drivers championship standings, as did Flying Lizard in the team rankings. The team has two Series victories in its three-year existence, both coming at Mid-Ohio.

"The Flying Lizards worked so hard during the offseason to get here," van Overbeek said. "The key for me was keeping it on the race track and bringing it home. The resurfacing job was fantastic, and the Michelins were great.

"This year in every department we are trying to maximize performance, from mechanics to tire performance, to be the best we can be," he added. "We're not there yet, but we are making great strides."

The next round of the 2006 American Le Mans Series is the New England Grand Prix, set for July 1 at Lime Rock Park. The race is scheduled for a 3 p.m. EDT start. CBS Sports will televise the event from 4 to 6 p.m. EDT on July 2. Live coverage will be available at www.americanlemans.com with American Le Mans Radio and IMSA Live Timing & Scoring.

Steven Laporte Wins The Opening Round Of The Canadian Civic Championship Series At Mosport

Courtesy Civic Championship

Bowmanville, Ontario - May 21, 2006: Steven Laporte of Sainte-Anne-des-Lacs enjoyed a near perfect race weekend in the season opener of the Canadian Civic Championship held at Mosport International Speedway. The Lombardi Honda Racing Team driver put his Civic DX Coupe on the provisional pole on Saturday. He then confirmed his fourth-career Mosport track pole on Sunday morning prior to winning the afternoon 16-lap race.

"What a great way to begin the season," Laporte said. "I was on the pole but nest to me, my teammate Robert (Boyer) had a much better start than I did and he took the lead going into the first corner of the race. Instead of fighting for first place, I had to deal with Didier Schraenen until he went slightly off-course at mid-race. I then decided to follow Robert in order to build a lead on the rest of the field. With two laps to go, I drafted him on the long Mosport straight and went by him in corner eight. After that, all I had to do was to keep him at bay until the finish line."

Mother nature did its best to test the drivers as they were greeted with cold temperature and snow flakes prior to the start of the race. It drizzled until mid-point, but fortunately the field enjoyed better weather at end of the event. With track conditions improving, Laporte made his move for first place on teammate Robert Boyer of Sainte-Anne-des-Lacs on lap 15 of 16.

Boyer finished a close second behind his Lombardi teammate after leading much of the opening round. Didier Schraenen of Mont-Saint-Hilaire (QC) finished third, 10 seconds behind the winner. The Énergie/NAPA/RDS driver fought for second-place with Laporte, who was holding the position at the time, until he spun following a race restart midway through the event. Normand Boyer of Sainte-Agathe (QC), who was assessed a drive-through penalty for passing during the formation lap, finished fourth ahead of Emmanuel Boivin-Moreau of Longueuil and Kris Rams of Toronto.

About the Series
This type of single-marque car racing Championship has seen Canadian drivers like Ron Follows, David Empringham, Richard Spénard, Frank Allers, Jacques Villeneuve, brother of Gilles, and more recently Kuno Wittmer, coming through the ranks on their way to making their mark on the national and international motorsport scene.

The 2006 Canadian Civic Championship Series continues with the Spring Classic double-header next weekend at Circuit Mont-Tremblant, QC. The eight-race schedule also includes events at Mosport International Raceway on June 18, at the Canadian Grand Prix on Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve on June 24, Shannonville Motorsport Park on July 16 and at Circuit Mont-Tremblant on September 24. The season finale will be held at Mosport on October 1.
