Cordeiro report; Things are looking greener!
Over 25 percent of sales were Clean Diesel TDI's
HERNDON, Va., July 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Volkswagen of America, Inc. today announced June 2009 sales of 19,027 units, representing an 18 percent decrease over June 2008. However, Volkswagen's award winning clean diesels posted their best sales month since their re-launch with 5,072 units, representing an impressive 26 percent of total sales.
The Jetta SportWagen once again posted its best sales month ever with sales of 1,982 units. Clean diesel TDI's accounted for 81 percent of SportWagen sales, 40 percent of Jetta sedan sales, and 29 percent of Touareg sales.
"Volkswagen of America is encouraged by the momentum of our clean diesel TDI sales," said Mark Barnes, Chief Operating Officer, Volkswagen of America, Inc. "It appears that U.S. consumers are starting to realize the many benefits of today's clean diesels--vehicles that attain more than 30 percent better fuel economy while emitting 25 percent less greenhouse gas emission, all without sacrificing driving dynamics," Barnes added.
Volkswagen also announced today that they have been named a corporate leader in Strategic Visions Total Quality Index® (TQI). For 2009, Volkswagen has the most models across the segments that were measured than any other brand--New Beetle, Rabbit, Jetta, CC, and Tiguan were all recognized as TQI leaders in their respective segments.

Delaware Speedway: Night of Destruction this Friday
From John Houghton
NewsTalk 1290 CJBK night will be an evening not to be missed at Delaware Speedway. Friday night is the first scheduled Throne King’s RV Ramp Jump of the year. Kevin Overholt plans to pilot his Crown Victoria jump car, launch it over a set of ramps and straight through a pair of trailers.
Running support for the ramp jump will the wild Ultimate Sandblasting & Coating Chaos Cars in a special Friday night format. The last time the Chaos Cars hit the track, Gary Triska’s Blue Thunder took the win and moved to within striking distance of his chief rival, points leader Spencer Rabideau and his car Bush Bomb. What format the Chaos Cars run will remain a surprise until the day of the event, but fans can be sure it will be full of the crazy barrel turns and bus stops they have come to expect.
The evening, as well as a “night of destruction,” is aimed at supporting the Canadian Diabetes Association Clothesline Program, which hopes to collect four million kilograms of clothing during their 2009 campaign.
The Clothesline Program provides Canadians the opportunity to donate their reusable clothing and household items. It’s a free and convenient way for individuals to donate to the Canadian Diabetes Association, while doing their part to preserve our planet. 100% of the proceeds from clothing, which are sold at wholesalers across Canada, are used to support the Association’s mission of promoting the health of Canadians through diabetes research, education, service and advocacy.
Race fans and speedway staff are being asked to bring their reusable items to the race track that night to help the Diabetes Association reach its goal. Items accepted as donations include clothing, linens and shoes. The Diabetes Association will have trucks and staff on site to accept donations in support of Clothesline.
Also appearing at the track in support of the Canadian Diabetes Association and the Clothesline program initiative is Strongman Len Elliott of London, Ontario. At 6’2, 375 lbs Len is the third strongest man in Ontario in Strongman competitions and the oldest competitor in the series at age 42. A strongman is person who performs feats of strength such as pulling trucks, farmers walk (walking distance with weights), grip holds events, Hercules holds, dead lifts (lifting weights off the ground) and much more.
“Six years ago I found out I am a type-2 diabetic,” explained Elliott. “This means I am dependent on insulin, but I do maintain my sugar with diet and other pills. Having learned that I tried out for strongman in 2004 for the first time ever. I trained for two months and placed seventh. Today I am the third strongest in Ontario.”
Len will be performing some of these feats of strength on the spectator hill throughout the evening, and plans to pull a truck down the front straightaway before the ramp jump.
“After getting the education from the diabetes association and seeing how valuable they are, I got involved volunteering doing presentations and weightlifting demonstrations for schools and groups,” said Elliott. “My principal message it to ‘get off your but’ - - I mean the ‘buts’ the prevent us from doing the things that contribute to a healthy lifestyle: ‘but, I’m busy, but I’m tired, but my tv show is on, but there’s not enough time’. The answer is to get off your butt and actually do something to be somewhat active. You don’t have to do what I do as a strong man, it’s about living a healthier lifestyle.”
The Throne Kings Ramp Jump itself will conclude the evening. Kevin Overholt has jumped through an RV once before, at the Delaware Speedway season finale last September. Overholt is very enthused about this jump and has been working hard this season to bring the jump to the track.
“There are many partners who came together to make this a reality,” said Overholt. “Ofners Auto Sales, Whitworth Towing, BDS Frame & Alignment, Rona (Commissioners & Highbury), A Daisy Limousine Services, Stewart Automotive, Paint Plus, AutoTrim Design, Ponderosa Campgrounds Thamesford, Crazy Night Productions, Cathcart Autoparts have all helped to make this possible.”
The main racing program on Friday will feature NASCAR Whelen All-American Series action. The Demar Aggregates Trucks, Delaware Super Stocks and POWERADE Modifieds will all be running their weekly racing programs. Gates open at 6:00 pm, racing starts at 8:00 pm. Tickets are available in advance through the speedway’s website www.delawarespeedway.com.
Four Nights of DIRTcar Series Racing On Tap for Chris Raabe (June 30, 2009)
From Craig Revelle – Finish Line Web Design
The “Teenage Tornado” will be in full force this weekend, with Four consecutive nights of Mr. DIRTcar series racing, beginning on Thursday, July 2nd at the Rolling Wheels Raceway in Elbridge, New York. From there, the series will shift northeast to the Brewerton Speedway, just north of Syracuse on Friday, July 3rd.
On Saturday, July 4th, Raabe will make his season debut at the Brockville Ontario Speedway, where he is the defending winner of the Mr. DIRTcar Sportsman series race, and also reigning track champion. The weekend will wrap up on Sunday July 5th, for the inaugural stop on the series at the Cornwall Speedway.
Last weekend, on Friday night at the Can Am Motorsports Park, after an hour and a half delay due to rain, Raabe finished fourth in his qualifying heat, and lined up 12th in the 25-lap feature event. As the race started, a light rain began to fall over the Speedway, and after just 11 laps of racing, track officials were forced to postpone the remaining laps until Friday night, July 10th.
Saturday night, at the Thunder Alley Speed Park, Raabe took the lead on lap nine and never looked back as he drove his 2006 Scott Industrial Services, Kingston RV, Tyroute Telus, Corcoran Excavating, McColman Media, Kwik Load Products, Canadian Tire Cataraqui, Kingston Hyundai, Word for the World Ministries, Aaron’s Sales & Leasing, Endura Paints, Brunet Plumbing, Waste Management and Finish Line Web Design sponsored TEO car to victory lane for the third time in 2009 at Thunder Alley, and fifth time overall in 2009. With the win, Raabe now moves into the points lead.
After this week, and the four nights of Mr. DIRTcar tour racing, the 01 team will then shift its focus to the newly acquired asphalt car. The first race on the schedule for Raabe will be Saturday, July 11th at the Peterborough Speedway in Peterborough, Ontario. Chris will be making his debut in the Ontario Sportsman Series, and they will be running twin 50 lap features. More details can be found at www.peterbouroughspeedway.com.
Depending on sponsorship, the team hopes to run at least two more races with the Ontario Sportsman Series and then the final two events in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series. Those events are September 12th, at the Barrie Speedway in Barrie, Ontario and September 26th at Kawartha Speedway, near Peterborough, Ontario.
The team would like to thank its sponsors, fans and friends for their support throughout the 2009 season. Due to the economy, and lack of funding, we haven’t been able to run as many pavement races as we had originally planned, but we now have the car, and are very excited about the coming weeks.
The Chris Raabe t-shirts will be available shortly. Last week, there was a mix up at the printer, which delayed the process another week. Once they are done, they will be available for purchase at the team hauler on race night, as well as chrisraabe.com.
For more information on Chris Raabe, please visit www.chrisraabe.com.

Castrol Canadian Touring Car Championship: Round 4 report - Mirabel ICAR
Mirabel, Quebec - Canada's Best Drivers Racing Today's Hottest Touring Cars gave the fans what they paid to see & more during Round Four of the Castrol Canadian Touring Car Championship presented by Toyo Tires this past weekend at the Jacques Villeneuve Mirabel Grand Prix at Circuit ICAR just north of Montreal. On the Mirabel Airport facility’s technical 3km tarmac road course, 30 drivers put on a pair of ‘shows’ in front of the large contingent of race fans.
To open Saturday afternoons heat race, GT Racing’s BMW drivers Greg Pootmans and Etienne Borgeat led Auto Analyser Lexus IS 300 pilot Andrew Wojteczko and Lombardi Racing’s Nick Wittmer and the other 26 drivers to the green flag and down into tight turns one & two. As Pootmans was forced wide in turn one Wojteczko, Borgeat and Wittmer were able to jump out ahead of him forcing him back to 7th position that would take Pootmans another 7 laps to fight his way back to 3rd place. Another GT Racing driver, David Bensadoun ran his BMW hard and was able to put himself in the top 5 in the Super Touring class for the end of the race.
The typical yet extremely exciting Touring Class battles began early as class pole sitter Alain Lauziere put his MINI Cooper right where he needed to be just ahead of Acura driver Nigel Heron & class points leader Anthony Rapone in his Honda Civic SI. On lap 11 Silvain Laporte & Patrick Seguin battled each other in their Honda’s to round out the top 5.
Sunday’s feature race was held under beautiful sunny skies as 27 drivers made the call to start the 30-minute race. Starting from the front row, Super Touring class drivers Andrew Wojteczko and Etienne Borgeat led the tightly packed field to the green flag. Borgeat suffered a mechanical failure on the second lap forcing him to park his BMW. Greg Pootmans always ready to pounce on an opportunity put his NorthWest Value Partners sponsored BMW into the 2nd spot and battled Wojteczko and his Lexus IS 300 for the balance of 19-lap race. Pootmans teammate Paul Dalla Lana charged into the number three position on lap two and never looked back. Eight Legs Racing’s Eric Hochgeschurz and Arek Wojciechowski brought their pair of BMW’s from their 8th & 9th starting positions and battled not only each other but GT Racing’s David Bensadoun for the entire race.
The intense battle in the Touring class was between MINI Cooper driver Alain Lauziere, Honda driver Anthony Rapone & Nigel Heron in his Acura Integra had the crowd on their feet the entire race. Lauziere broke out into an early lead leaving Rapone & Heron to battle amongst themselves for the first 11 laps. Lauziere’s gamble to get an early lead cost him dearly when his tires started to “go away” allowing Rapone & Heron to make up valuable lost ground. The last eight laps saw some of the closest, cleanest racing as Rapone did everything he had to keep Heron at bay with Lauziere waiting to pounce on any mistakes the two class front runners might make.
Tom Kwok ran his Honda Civic SI hard from the 26th starting position to gain eight positions putting him just behind Bully Clutch sponsored Patrick Seguin to round out the top five for the day.
During the podium festivities everyone in attendance was extremely delighted to have Canadian racing icon Jacques Villeneuve on hand the present the trophies to the class winners. Drivers & the fans alike were treated to autographs and pictures with the racing superstar.
The drivers and crews now prepare for one of the championship’s premiere road course events, The Honda Indy Toronto, July 10-12 2009.

Subaru Rally Team Canada's Richard and Ockwell - 2nd Consecutive Win
Driving a Subaru Impreza WRX STi, Squamish, BC based Richard and his co-driver Alan Ockwell, of Toronto, ON, took the lead after the fourth stage and never looked back, marking Richard's second overall win in a row, and third overall win at this particular event. Three victories by a single driver is a new record for this classic event which has been held for 32 years.
"This was billed as the North American showdown of the season,"explained Richard, "we had the fastest drivers in North America at this event and it didn't disappoint in terms of action for the fans." The entry list included the top ranked teams from the American national championship including Ken Block, who won the last round of the Rally America series and is a 2 time X Games medalist. Despite a flat tire on the second stage, Richard and Ockwell shared the best stage times with Block, who eventually crashed out on stage 4. "After Ken crashed out we pretty much paced ourselves to the end. It was one of those rallies where you either broke or crashed trying to keep up."
The team's event wasn't without some drama, however. "We decided to try some different suspension settings, which didn't really work out," explained Ockwell. "Once we reverted back to the original setup, the only issues we had were with the tires." Despite leading the event from the fourth stage, the team endured a total of four flat tires. "It wasn't like we were pushing, we had several minutes of advantage, but we kept pulling tires off the car. In the end, the car ran flawlessly but we'll have to look at what we can do about our tire situation before the next event."
The Rallye Baie des Chaleurs is considered the toughest round of the Canadian Rally Championship, and normally teams fight to stay in the event with engines, transmissions and suspension components pushed to the limit in this tough test of speed and endurance. "I have to give credit where credit is due - the car was absolutely flawless. Aside from the tires we didn't have anything go wrong at all, and that is despite the fact that we were leading the toughest event in the championship.
Our Squamish, BC-based Rocket Rally crew did a fantastic job." Rocket Rally Racing is based in Squamish, BC, Canada and operates the Subaru Rally Team Canada on behalf of Subaru Canada, with associate sponsors Vision-X Lighting, Crawford Performance and ACT providing product support for the 2009 Canadian Rally Championship.
This victory puts Richard and Ockwell solidly in the lead of the 2009 Canadian Rally Championship, now at the halfway point of its season.
Richard and Ockwell are the defending champions from 2008. All rounds of the Canadian Rally Championship are televised nationally on TSN, TSN2 and RDS, as well as internationally. For television times, please check your local listings. More information about the Canadian Rally Championship can be found at the Canadian Association of Rallysport's website http://www.blogger.com/www.carsrally.ca. Photos, videos and more information about the team can be found at the team's website http://www.blogger.com/www.rocketrally.com.
Varney Speedway Race Results for June 27 & 28
Varney Speedway Race Recap and Results for Saturday, June 27 and Sunday, June 28, 2009
Multiple Winners In Varney's Double Header
Saturday proved to be arguably the best race night of the season so far. The sun was shining, the grandstands were full and the drivers were ready to race. Sunday's Invitational Night narrowly missed cancellation as thunderstorms to the north and south of the speedway threatened to end the double feature minutes before it began. All of Varney Motor Speedway's regular racing divisions were included on the race card for both nights, giving the fans more than their money's worth.
Saturday nights Stock 4 feature saw a fan-favourite take the checkered for his first win of the season, while Sunday's race was a caution marred runaway. Hanover's #7 Charles Embro picked up his first win of the year after #9 Dennis Cremasco, who appeared to on his way to the win, got together with #86 Nick Clarke while battling for the lead. The two spun and Embro sped on for the win. Sunday's feature was filled with caution flags and; time wise; ended up being the longest race at Varney so far this season. With several cars visiting from other tracks, it was #2 Billy Mellenhorst perservering through the crashes leading every lap of the race for the win. Saturday's qualifying heat races were won by #28 Jim Suter, Cremasco, Clarke and #38 Sherry Smart. Sunday's qualifying heat races were won by #51 Clark Hartman, Mellenhorst, Embro and Cremasco.
The Street Stock class continues to be dominated this year by #3 Gary Atkinson and #93 Bill Cole. While some drivers have come close, running up front in the late stages of the race, the two Hanover drivers have wrangled every feature race win so far this season. On Saturday night, #99 Jamie Hunt may have been the only driver to break the streak but a broken rear axle ended the young driver's night early as Cole cruised on to the win. Sunday, Hunt was back and on Cole's back bumper for most of the race; even ducking down to the inside of the veteran on several occassions; but for the second night in a row, Bill Cole stole the show as Hunt faded late. Saturday's qualifying heat races were won by #48 Mke Wilson and #3 Jaz (substituting for Gary Atkinson). Sunday's qualifiers were won by Atkinson and Cole.
The top five ran nose-to-tail in Saturday night's Super Street Stock feature race as the laps wound down. Hungry for the win, #61 Chad Eden; who was running second and not willing to settle; made a last lap - last turn bump and run on race leader #56 Bobby Zee exiting turn four but as the two ran to the checkers, it was Bobby Zee hanging on for his second feature race win of the young season. Sunday's Invitational feature saw the usual suspects upfront and from the pole position, #83 Scott Way led every lap for the win. Heat races on Saturday were won by #85 Matt Clarke and #72 Marty Monette while Sunday's heats were won by Way and #77 Rob Brown.
A vicious wreck in the Late Models heats saw last years defending points champion #96 Monty Kelly walk away from what was left of his car after sailing off the track at the top of turn one and slamming rear first into the tire and dirt bank barrier. Kelly was okay but his car looked about two feet shorter than it was before the wreck. In the feature race Saturday night, #27 Doug Cameron led for several laps before handing the reigns over to series points leader #18 Jason McLellan. Building momentum over the last couple of weeks, #2x Mike Brown; surprising to many; was able to keep pace with the #18 car even challenging for the lead late but, McLellan proved to too strong and held on for the checkered flag. As if that wasn't enough, McLellan took the lead on lap two after starting fourth in Sundays feature and sailed on to his second win of the weekend. Qualifying heat races were won by McLellan and #2 Ed Peterson on Saturday night and, Brown and McLellan on Sunday night.
Making his return to the All Pro Modifieds at Varney Speedway, #3 Glen Coulson was quick to rekindle old on track rivalries from years gone by. In Saturday's feature race, Coulson battled late with #12 Justin McLellan. While the rust appeared to be fully shaken off, Coulson settled for second as McLellan took the checkered flag. Sunday night saw #8 Gary Mclean; who had front end problems the night before; take the lead early. Coulson and McLellan tried to run him down but, McLean held on for the win. Mod heats were won by McLean and Coulson on Saturday as well as on Sunday.
The Train feature on Saturday night saw the Markdale Salvage Crushers take the win but it was Sunday's feature that saw the most action. From a three-wide standing start, the Trains took the green in what was the most exciting Train race this season. The competition stayed tight for the entire race.Three and sometimes four wide racing with multiple battles for the lead had the fans on the edge of their seats. The Crushers were going for the long-weekend sweep but, momentum is everythng in this class and The Train Wreck didn't lose much of it as they were able to hold the field back for the win.
Point battles remain tight in all divisions with the top five often seperated by only five or six points. If you are curious to see what all the excitment is about, Varney Motor Speedway runs the best grass-roots stock car racing in the province every Saturday night. THE MOPAR CANADIAN NATIONALS ADDS ALCOHOL FUNNY CAR “CLASH OF THE TITANS” MATCH RACE, CANADA’S FASTEST TOP FUEL BIKE and the BALLISTIC EAGLE JET MOTOR
Ever consider getting on a two wheeled rocket? Well, we have two of them at this year’s event. The first is a Top Fuel motorcycle, you launch it with only the back tire, steer only with your body and go 231MPH in 6.08 seconds. That is what Geoff Pollard of London, Ontario does. In fact he is the fastest man in Canadian history on a Top Fuel bike and he is going to show you how it’s done during the Pro Qualifying rounds on Saturday at 3pm & 7pm.
In contrast to Geoff, is Kevin Martin’s Ballistic Eagle Jet Motorcycle which puts on a great flame show and then accelerates entirely from the thrust of the jet engine. While the start is more controlled the thing is a monster by the time it crosses the finish line at 200MPH. Centre for Speed: Nott captures Super Sportsman Series 100
SHEDIAC, N.B.) -- Glynn Nott (#12) of Burton, N.B. and Robert Légère of Tracadie, N.B. captured their first career feature wins during Sunday's Maritime Super Sportsman Series 100 and Schneiders Mini Stock 50 stock car racing action at the Centre for Speed, Atlantic Canada's Super Speedway and "Metro Moncton's Playground of Power".
A total of 57 drivers from New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island took the green during this 'double header' racing event.
Nott, who has competed in a number of Maritime Super Sportsman Series events at the CFS over the past few years finally tasted victory on Sunday by leading the second half of the 100-lap feature event. Meanwhile, Légère who travels from Tracadie to compete at CFS, picked up his first career feature win crossing the stripe first in the Mini Stock 50-lap main event.
Nott started the Super Series feature event in the11th starting position on the 24-car grid and took advantage of some timely passes to make his way up to the lead pack. For the first half of the 100-lap event, it looked like pole-sitter, Cal Hatfield (#11) of Rothesay would be tough to beat as he set the early pace and led the first 50 laps of the event. However, Hatfield's day came to an abrupt end on lap #50 when mechanical problems forced him to the pit area thus handing the lead to CFS 2008 Sportsman and Super Series Champion, Claude Gaudet (#22) of Grand Barachois.
On the ensuing restart, Gaudet held off the charge from Nott, who had worked his way into second spot, until lap #53 when Nott passed Gaudet on the backstretch to take the lead. Over the final half of the event, and through a few restarts, Nott was able to fend off challenges from Gaudet and Mike Power (#58) of Salisbury to finally pick up his first win at CFS something that has eluded him over the past few years. Gaudet had to settle for second, while Power took home third place hardware. Heat winners were Hatfield and veteran Bert Cormier (#3) of Bouctouche while Luc Bourgeois (#88) of Memramcook took the win in the Trophy Dash.
In Mini Stock action, Légère made the drive from Tracadie worthwhile as he also picked up his first career feature win in the Schneiders Mini Stock 50 by methodically making his way through the pack to finally take over the lead just past the halfway mark. By lap #3, five of the top competitors where locked in a fierce battle for the lead with Martin Landry (#00) of Grand Barachois leading the way, followed closely by Légère, Brad Daley (#33) of Moncton, defending CFS champ Pierre Gautreau (#99) and cousin Daniel Gautreau (#20) both of Shediac.
On lap #38, Landry lost traction coming out of turn #2 and quickly found himself back peddling to third position with Pierre Gautreau inheriting the lead and Légère in hot pursuit. Over the final 12 laps, Gautreau and Légère exchange the lead a few times with Légère finally winning out to cross the finish line just ahead of Gautreau and Landry, who nonetheless collected some valuable South East Challenge Series points with victories in both the 10-lap heat and semi-finals.
In Streetstock action, veteran Saint John driver, Rick Cashol (#54) came out victorious in the 25-lap feature. With the feature win, Cashol was able to erase some of the not-so-fond memories of coming in a very close second during his last visit to CFS during the Atlantic Streetstock Championships in October 2008. Victor Vienneau (#03) of Cocagne, who had earlier picked up the win in the 10-lap heat, had to settle for second in the feature ahead of John Doucette (#57) of Summerside, PEI who had in turn picked up first place hardware in the 10-lap semi.
Finally, in the Four Fun division, it was also a first career trip to victory lane for Mike Weagle (#60) of Petitcodiac as he was first across the stripe in both the 25-lap feature and the 10-lap semi-final. In the feature, Weagle waited patiently for an opportunity to get by leader Jonathan Doucette (#57) of Summerside, PEI. On lap #14, Weagle smoked his tires as he powered his way around the outside of Doucette coming out of turn #4 and then, never looked back to capture the win ahead of Doucette and Eldon Campbell (#17) of Moncton, who took some consolation with his earlier win in the 10-lap heat.
Next Sunday afternoon, July 5th at 2:00 p.m., the CENTRE will host the Eastern Well Drillers Streetstock 50 along with regular South East Challenge Series points championship racing in Sportsman, Mini Stock and Four Fun divisions.

Brighton Speedway: CanEHdian Day at the Track - June 27th results
BRIGHTON, ON - There was red and white everywhere as Brighton Speedway hosted “CanEHdian Day at the Track” on Saturday, June 27th. Presented by Dibbit’s Excavating, the Brighton Automotive Canada Day Championships and Fan Appreciation events provided the crowd with a huge show with fast cars, increased laps, extra races and a chance for the fans to meet and greet the drivers on the track.
Following a set of time trials for the drivers to establish starting positions, the FAB FOUR of Bill’s Johns Comp 4, Picture This Pure Stocks, Brighton Automotive Pro Stocks and Bainer’s Radiator Canadian Modifieds, were joined on the track by the Quinte Towing Stingers and the Pro Stock Mechanics Race, for a total of more than 130 feature race laps, that followed the second Brighton Automotive Fan Appreciation intermission, and included a fireworks spectacle, thanks to Mystical Distributing Fireworks.
Kyle Sopaz, #12 Bill’s Johns Comp 4, of Carrying Place, and Jeff Sallans, #72 Bainer’s Radiator Canadian Modified, of Glen Miller, both timed the fastest lap in their respective class, and then after earning the pole position for the night for that time, took their qualifying heat and division feature win. Also taking features were Bob Greene, #26 Picture This Pure Stock, and Andy Fletcher, #42 Quinte Towing Stinger, both from Brighton.
The Pro Stock Mechanics race was won by former driver turned track supporter, Jason McCrory, also from Brighton. The Brighton Automotive ProStock race was won by Corey Earl, #11, of Ameliasburgh, however following post race inspection both he and second place finisher Doug Anderson, #72 of Trenton, were disqualified, giving the double points and extra purse to the 2008 Division Champion, Kraig Handley, #91 of Picton.
“It really was a good night of racing. With Mother Nature giving us cooperative weather, the sponsors providing fun stuff for the fans, everyone pumped about Canada Day and summer vacation, time trials and double points to be had, the air both on and off the track was buzzing with positive energy and healthy competition. We are certain that the season will only continue to get better as the drivers push for greater speeds and more success, and the fans fill the grandstands to watch it all roll out,” said Brenda Whitehead, Pit Director, at the conclusion of CanEHdian Day at the Track.
The next race event is the CBM Concrete Presentation of the First Ever Figure 8 Races ( rules available at www.brightonspeedway.com), along with Flat Track 4 Wheeler Racing, Brighton Speedway’s regular classes, and the Hotch’s Auto Parts Canadian Modified Pro Stock Showdown on July 4th. INDYCAR: DIXON WINS AT RICHMOND, TIES HORNISH'S ALL-TIME VICTORY RECORD
RICHMOND, Va. (Saturday, June 27, 2009) - Scott Dixon one-upped Sam Hornish Jr.
Dixon, who started next to polesitter Dario Franchitti, won the SunTrust Indy Challenge at Richmond International Raceway by 0.3109 of a second over his Target Chip Ganassi Racing teammate.
The victory - Dixon's third of the season and second at Richmond - was the 19th of Dixon's IndyCar Series career and tied Hornish for the most in series history. Dixon, driving the No. 9 entry, matched the record in his 104th race - one less than Hornish, who totaled 116 starts from 2000-2006.
Graham Rahal finished third - his best oval finish - in the No. 02 McDonald's entry for Newman/Haas/Lanigan Racing. Hideki Mutoh, who led the first laps of his IndyCar Series career, finished fourth in the No. 27 Formula Dream car and Andretti Green Racing teammate Danica Patrick was fifth.
Franchitti, who earned a bonus point for winning the PEAK Performance Pole Award, took the championship points lead (279-278) over Dixon. Ryan Briscoe, the points leader entering the eighth of 17 races, suffered his first DNF since July 2008 at Nashville Superspeedway and fell to 26 points behind. His Team Penske teammate, Helio Castroneves, also crashed exiting Turn 2 and is fourth with 225 points heading to Watkins Glen International, the first of three consecutive road/street races.
DAY 2 NOTEBOOK:
Helio Castroneves' third Indianapolis 500 victory, which he accomplished six weeks after being found non-guilty by a federal court jury of tax-evasion charges, is nominated in the "Best Moment" category.
"It's so many things together," said Castroneves, who celebrated with his traditional fence climb and broke into tears in Victory Circle. "It was a moment for me, a moment for the fans, a moment for the track being 100 years old. It's certainly one moment that I'll never forget."
Also nominated are the victory by the U.S. swim team in the Olympic relay and University of Florida quarterback Tim Tebow's emotional speech in a news conference following the team's only loss during the 2008 season.
Castroneves and reigning IndyCar Series champion Scott Dixon also are nominated in the "Best Driver" category along with Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton, NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson and NHRA top Fuel champion Tony Schumacher.
"To be in this category is just fantastic. It's great if we can make it happen," Castroneves said.
Added Dixon: "It's cool."
