Verhoeven wins CASCAR Sportsman Series opener at Mosport
For immediate release / June 17, 2006
BOWMANVILLE, ON – Dion Verhoeven opened his CASCAR Sportsman Series title defense with a win in Saturday night’s season opener at Mosport Speedway. The Kerwood, ON resident started on the outside of the front row for the 100-lap feature race at the half-mile oval and quickly moved into the lead.
The McRoberts Pontiac Grand Prix driver survived an early challenge from polesitter Steve Munro of Carp, ON, and went on to lead every lap. Munro’s Mattel Hot Wheels Chevy spun on lap 6 to bring out the first of three caution flags. Undeterred, the veteran racer fought back over the remainder of the race to take third-place at the finish.
Second place in the opener went to London, ON racer Mike Alguire. The A-DOR Construction Pontiac driver came home eight seconds back of Verhoeven. A total of 13 drivers participated in the Mosport feature. Only the top three finishers completed all 100 laps.
The next CASCAR Sportsman Series race is scheduled for Saturday, July 1 at Barrie Speedway as part of the MOPAR Canada Day Weekend at the newly resurfaced 1/3-mile tri-oval.

CASCAR: J.R. Fitzpatrick takes the pole for Sunday’s CASCAR race at Mosport International Raceway
Thomson is the defending winner of the Clarington 200. His victory last June was the only win of his ‘Drive For Five’ season in which he was successful in capturing his fifth consecutive CASCAR Super Series National championship. Last year’s Mosport race was also notable for J.R. Fitzpatrick. His third-place finish was the first-ever podium result for the then-sophomore Super Series competitor.
Several other successful CASCAR road racers posted solid times during qualifying on Saturday and will start near the front of the pack on Sunday. Mt. Albert, ON resident Kerry Micks, who won last summer’s CASCAR race at the Toronto Indy, will start third, alongside of former Mosport road course race winner DJ Kennington, of St. Thomas, ON, in the Castrol Dodge Charger.
Peter Gibbons (Canadian Tire Chevy), who has enjoyed considerable success at Mosport over the years, will start fifth. Windsor, ON racer Ron Beauchamp Jr. will line up on the outside of the third row on Sunday in his MOPAR-powered Dodge Charger.
The 51-lap Clarington 200 is the first CASCAR road course event of the season. The 32-car field is scheduled to take the green flag at 1:30 p.m. at the legendary 10-turn, 2.459-mile road course, located north of Bowmanville, ON.

AIM Autosport to Big League with Daytona Prototype
WOODBRIDGE, ON – AIM Autosport will enter the premier division of the Rolex Sports Car Series later this month, having acquired a Daytona Prototype race car. AIM will kick off its campaign at Daytona International Speedway in two weeks with team alumni Mark Wilkins and James Hinchcliffe at the wheel. AIM Autosport is currently seeking sponsors for its Daytona Prototype campaign and is close to announcing a programme that combines conventional motorsports marketing with charitable donations.
With a Lexus-powered Riley Technologies chassis purchased from Target Chip Ganassi Racing, AIM intends to compete in three events this year, preparing for a full championship season in 2007. Following the June 29 debut at Daytona, Wilkins will go on to compete at Watkins Glen on August 11 and Infineon Raceway on August 26. AIM is speaking to several drivers about co-driving with Wilkins at these events.
Having spent many years successfully competing in junior open-wheel development series, promoting young drivers to professional ranks, AIM felt prototypes offered an opportunity for the team to take itself to the top level. The Rolex Series has grown in leaps and bounds and AIM is joining as growth continues. Given the current state of open-wheel racing in North America, young drivers are looking more and more toward sports cars as a viable choice for their futures. Adding Daytona Prototypes to the AIM stable, which includes Formula BMW and Formula Mazda, allows the team to take a driver out of kart racing all the way to a top-level North American professional championship.
"I am extremely pleased to be involved in taking AIM to the next level in professional motorsport," said AIM partner, Ian Willis, who manages the Formula Mazda team and has taken on management of the new program. "Having Mark and James teamed up for Daytona is really exciting as they work so well together and are both fast and mature drivers for their young ages."
"I'm absolutely thrilled that we have made it this far," said Wilkins who has risen through the ranks with AIM. "This will be my sixth season with AIM Autosport and I am thrilled to continue working with Ian, who has worked exceptionally hard to put this exciting program together. We understand there is a steep learning curve but we have the right people to make it happen and that is very exciting for me.
"James is a great driver," Wilkins added, "And I look forward to racing with him. I think we will be a competitive combination."
Each of the Rolex Series races AIM is entering will be carried live on Speed TV, and the Daytona and Watkins Glen races are part of NASCAR Nextel Cup events. In the meantime, AIM’s Daytona Prototype will be among the cars lapping Mosport tomorrow to help raise funds for the Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame.
About AIM Autosport: Established in 1995 with a mandate to identify, train and manage emerging motorsport talent AIM operates multi-car teams competing in the Formula BMW USA Championship and the Star Mazda Championship. Among the drivers who have graduated from AIM Autosport are former series and rookie champions James Hinchcliffe, Andrew Ranger, Andrew Bordin, J.F.Veilleux, Jonathan Macri, L.P. Dumoulin, Anthony Simone and Dan Burchill. Other notable AIM graduates include Sam Hornish Jr., Billy Asaro, Mark Wilkins, Ashley Taws, Paul Dana, Tom Dyer, Josh Schreiber, Dan McMullen and Antoine Bessette.
About the Rolex Series: The Rolex Sports Car Series is leading a resurgence of major-league road racing in North America. At the foundation of this success is the exotic Daytona Prototype division that is the fastest growing auto racing class in the world. Congratulations!!!!

We're rushing to get through a project today, so the blogging might be a little light. However, I wanted to pass on our congratulations to Jason & Kim Hathaway on the birth of their first child.
Jason is a CASCAR Super Series rookie and a regular competitor at Delaware Speedway.
According to Jamie Hakonson of EHR, "Hannah Lynn Hathaway" took the green flag at 6:25 p.m. on Wednesday, June 13. Jamie said the healthy and happy little girl was so eager to watch her daddy race that she arrived four weeks ahead of schedule.
In other EHR news, BC racer Jessica Cyr will be making her Super Series debut this weekend at Mosport Int'l Raceway; her first of four planning outings this season in the Bosch / Snap On EHR Chevy.
Le Mans: Audi claims pole with TDI Power
In qualifying for the Le Mans 24 Hour race, Audi yet again demonstrated in a stunning way the performance of TDI Power. The brace of new Audi R10 TDI cars were by far the quickest in final qualifying.
The two sportscars powered by 650-hp diesel engines will start from the front row on Saturday at 1700 hrs. After rain had affected the first qualifying on Wednesday, the conditions on Thursday evening were dry and perfect.
In the first part of the final qualifying session, the Audi drivers concentrated on fine-tuning their R10 TDI cars before Audi Sport Team Joest headed for the top of the time sheets at the beginning of the last section.
Shortly after 2200 hrs, Dindo Capello and Marco Werner set lap times beyond the reach of the opposition powered by petrol engines. Setting a time of 3m 30.466s, Dindo Capello scored his third Le Mans pole position following 2001 and 2002.
A mere 0.118 seconds behind, Marco Werner completed an all Audi R10 TDI front row. Capello, who turns 42 on Saturday, did not only present himself with an early birthday present. He also rewarded the work of his mechanics who completely dismantled and re-assembled the Audi R10 TDI with start number 7 for safety reasons after an accident on Wednesday. Just in time for final qualifying, the R10 TDI was ready again.
Dindo Capello starts at Le Mans together with record winner Tom Kristensen and Allan McNish. Frank Biela shares driving duties in the "sister car” with Emanuele Pirro and Marco Werner. All six drivers have won the Le Mans 24 Hour race at least once. However, a diesel-powered car has never won in the history of the Le Mans endurance classic. For the first time, Audi accepts this challenge this weekend.

PREVIEW: CASCAR heads to Mosport for a Father’s Day weekend double-header
TORONTO, ON – The CASCAR Super Series will take to the track for its first road course outing of the season this weekend at Mosport Int’l Raceway for the Clarington 200 presented by Canadian Shield Anti Crime Response Corporation. Sunday afternoon’s 51-lap feature race will be the highlight of a busy weekend of racing action at the legendary multi-purpose motorsports facility, located an hour east of Toronto.
Five-time and defending Super Series champion Don Thomson Jr. earned his only checkered flag of the 2005 season at Mosport, last June. The Home Hardware Chevy driver started second and took the lead from polesitter Peter Gibbons just past the halfway point of the race, en route to the victory.
Thomson, who leads the 2006 Super Series points chase after one event, came home less than a second in front of runner-up Jeff Lapcevich, while J.R. Fitzpatrick finished third to earn his first-ever CASCAR podium. During qualifying for last year’s race, Gibbons smashed the existing CASCAR time trial record when he turned in a lap of 1 minute and 26.183 seconds around the 10-turn, 2.459-mile road course.
While the majority of CASCAR’s racers are skilled on road courses, there are only a handful of drivers who have climbed the top rung of the podium on several occasions. One of them is Robin Buck, who has three Super Series road course wins on his resume (two at the Toronto Indy, and one in the Vancouver Indy).
The Oakville, ON resident hasn’t participated in a CASCAR race since 2003, but he will be returning to action this weekend, at Mosport, behind the wheel of his Jennifer Ashley Foundation-supported Pontiac Grand Prix. Buck has finished as high as second in CASCAR road races at Mosport, in the past, and is looking to break through on Sunday with a win.
“The Jennifer Ashley Foundation, in association with ‘Rebate A Cause’ will be on our car this weekend at Mosport,” said Buck. “We put a 2006 Grand Prix body on my car and we’re proud to promote the Foundation, which has helped over 3000 children and their families with treatment needs, medical expenses and financial assistance since it was formed in 1990 by National Sports owner Norman Clements.” According to Buck, “there’s a good possibility” that he will be participating in all of the remaining road course races on the ‘06 CASCAR schedule.
Qualifying for the Clarington 200 presented by Canadian Shield Anti Crime Response Corporation takes place on Saturday afternoon at Mosport Int’l Raceway, while the 51-lap feature race is slated to take the green flag on Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. Several other support classes will be in action at Mosport throughout the weekend.
The CASCAR Sportsman Series will also be taking to the track at Mosport this weekend, kicking off its 2006 schedule with a 100-lap feature race on Saturday evening at Mosport Speedway. Kerwood, ON racer Dion Verhoeven will begin his title defense of CASCAR’s Ontario-based touring series at the challenging half-mile Mosport oval. Verhoeven sat on the pole for last year’s Sportsman Series event at Mosport, but the race was won by former series champ Steve Robblee.
CASCAR ON TV: Catch the Clarington 200 presented by Canadian Shield Anti Crime Response Corporation from Mosport Int’l Raceway on Sunday, June 25 at 2 p.m. EST on SPORTSNET. OSCAAR Super Late Models Return To Barrie Speedway On Fresh Asphalt

Action packed OSCAAR Super Late Model racing returns to Barrie Speedway this weekend on June 17. There is a new twist this year with the completion of track improvements and fresh asphalt on Tuesday June 13th. Last year was the first full racing season after a major upgrading to the track was completed in the fall of 2004. Recently, the speedway decided to tweak the track a bit more with hopes of even better racing in 2006.
The Outlaws got in a few heat races during their only visit of 2005: see Race Report. Rain was a major player that day and finally brought an end to the night's racing before the OSCAAR 50 lap feature. There was a great deal of anticipation about how the race would unfold as some of the Outlaws had challenges during heat races probably aggravated by the lack of practice sessions due to rain earlier in the day.
The weather looks like it will finally give us a break. Current forecasts are for sunny and warm weather on Saturday. OSCAAR drivers and teams are looking forward to getting some feature race action under their belts. For the drivers with strong aspirations on the 2006 championship, the rain cancellations from the first two events have simply peaked their drive to race and win!
John Fletcher, Ed Bowlby, Rob Clarke and Al Shepstone put their own emphasis on strong 2006 seasons after collecting the first heat race wins of 2006. Kawartha race action also saw strong performances by John Owen, Gary Passer, TJ Woolsey, Phil Bullen and Drew Spicer. Drivers were happy with the 2006 change to soft tires on both sides of the car. The only cautions during heat races came from cars with mechanical breakdowns. Teams with car problems were a bit relieved by the rained out feature at Kawartha and can now look forward to getting back on track at Barrie.
Thank you to all OSCAAR fans for your patience and support as we try to get the 2006 season under way. We look forward to seeing you at Barrie on Saturday!

CASCAR WEST: Rollercoaster Ride For RZ Racing at Sun Valley
Kamloops, B.C.- The second stop on the FLO-PRO.COM CASCAR Western series tour was held on Saturday June 10/06 at Sun Valley Motor Speedway. The "Zimmer Wheaton GMC" racing team had an up and down day but finished on a positive note.
The #21 of Jason White spent most of the day near the top of the speed charts when he posted the third fastest practice time and qualified the "Zimmer Wheaton Used Car Superstore" Monte Carlo in the 5th spot of the 21 car field.
When the green flag dropped, Jason held his position until lap 20 when the handling of the car started to deteriorate.
"We had a car that I thought could compete for the win at the start of the race, I was comfortable with the set up but it went away very quickly and I fought an extreme push situation for quite a few laps," said White.
The first caution didn't come until the second half of the race which gave the leaders time to put Jason down a lap.
"When the caution finally flew, I was happy my crew could finally adjust the car and we could learn something from what had happened to our initial set-up. After two or three pit stops the boys put a decent set-up back into the car and we were turning some fast lap times once again, it's just too bad we went down a lap earlier in the race."
After falling back to 15th place Jason fought his way back to the top ten with a 9th place finish.
The #11 car of Marty White had a frustrating day in the "Powder Ventures Excavating" Monte Carlo. The team fought most of the day to get a fast set-up into the car.
"I could get into the corner and through the middle fast and smooth, but we just couldn't get rid of the push coming off", said Marty.
When the race started Marty was holding on in the top fifteen, but then on lap 140 mechanical problems arose for the second race this season.
This time the clutch let go and ended his day early, leaving him with a dissapointing 18th place finish. Look for Marty to enter a brand new Mike Mccoll built car in the upcoming national Super Series event at Sun Valley Motor Speedway on July 15/16 2006.........should be interesting!

Cayuga International Speedway’s coming home

HAGERSVILLE, ON – Contrary to popular belief the track most recently known as Cayuga 2000 Speedway has been sold to a consortium of prominent Golden Horseshoe business personalities. Recent reports had the track being sold to a group of Toronto investors, but those reports are untrue.
The track was sold to the Golden Horseshoe group on Friday, May 16th, and they in their wisdom have set the wheels in motion to bring the name back by which the facility was known during the glory years of the Bob Slack family— Cayuga International Speedway.
With the sale final, negotiations have now been finalized to run one last CASCAR® (Canadian Association for Stock Car Racing) race before major renovations to the track begin to occur. The CASCAR® Labour Day Classic featuring the CASCAR® Super and Sportsman Series which is the premier race event of their season will be run on Saturday September 2 and Sunday September 3 on the newly revived Cayuga International Speedway. The CASCAR® Super Series event on this final weekend of racing prior to construction will be televised over Rogers Sportsnet.
During the heady days with the Slack family, the speedway was considered the "Canada's Crown Jewel" of Canadian Stock Car racing on the fastest 5/8-mile paved oval racetrack in Canada. This once proud crown jewel struggled in recent times to retain its lustre, but that now is a part of history.
The purchasers have had a life-long passion for the sport of automotive racing particularly CASCAR® and NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing). CASCAR® has been the leading touring series in Canada since its beginnings in 1981.
During the days when the Slack family owned and operated Cayuga International Speedway their professionalism in its operation established the standard by which other owners in the Southern Ontario region operated.
Countless thousands of spectators thrilled to the sound of the push rod V-8's on the 5/8-mile high-banked Cayuga International Speedway oval at Nelles Corners, Ontario. Over the decades the facility attracted many of the top names in motor sport racing such as Richard Petty, Al Unser, Kale Yarborough, Dale Earnhardt, the Allisons--Bobby, Davey, Donnie and Kenny and Benny Parsons.
Don Biederman, who passed away in 1999 and was inducted into the Canadian Motorsports Hall of Fame, was the perennial archrival to the widely known Jr. Hanley. Bob Senneker also drove down Cayuga’s victory lane many times. He captured first place in the premier running of the Maple Leaf 250 in 1971, and the 1985 Molson Export 300, an Automotive Service Association (ASA) fall classic. Prior to the ASA’s arrival at Cayuga, the season ending event for Super Late Models was always the Maple Leaf 250.
Immediate plans for the facility are being formulated. Those plans will be clarified and demonstrated in the near future at a media conference and Open House at the Cayuga speed sport facility.

Marketing/TV agreement puts rally motorsport in the spotlight
Courtesy the Canadian Rally ChampionshipCALGARY, AB, June 8, 2006 - A 5-year deal between fast-growing ATV Productions Ltd. and the Canadian Association of Rallysport (CARS) will put automobile rallying back on Canadian television and new marketing muscle behind one of Canada’s most colourful motorsports.
The agreement will offer 26 half-hour segments on the Canadian Rally Championship to top-tier broadcasters in more than a dozen major markets across the country via the Chum Limited television system.
The arrangement gives ATV the marketing rights for the national rally championship as well as the responsibility for filming each of the six events in the series. The package gives each event two half-hour programs and concludes the coverage with a season wrap-up. The 13-episode package is repeated once for a total of 26 broadcasts. The deal was signed here May 26, 2006, at the Rocky Mountain Rally.
ATV has been quick to capitalize on the popularity of the sport by signing two sponsors for the series. Subaru Canada, a name long associated with rallying, returns as a presenting sponsor of the televised package while Yokohama Tire (Canada) Inc. joins as a sponsor.
“This is the kind of really positive development that will help us keep up the momentum the Canadian Rally Championship has built over the past decade,” says CARS president Paul Westwick. “TV helps us to market the sport, and marketing helps us deliver quality TV. ATV is the right partner at the right time, and we’re pleased they share our positive view of the future.”
ATV president and CEO, John Lovelace added, “ATV is excited about partnering with the Canadian Rally Championship. Now we can deliver to viewers what they want to see: interesting character development and motorsport action set to the backdrop of raw Canadian back roads. It doesn’t get any better then that. We certainly see the day when the CRC series will be a staple of weekend afternoon viewing in Canada!”
The ATV productions of the rally events will take a new approach, says Westwick, with the episodes concentrating on the fascinating people who seem to defy the laws of physics as they hurl exotic competition cars over impossible roads in some of the most scenic spots in Canada. For the 2006 season, the productions will be hosted by Andrew Comrie-Picard and Jen Horsey – two competitors who guide viewers through the intricacies of the sport and through the remarkable lives of the competitors. Chum stations such as A-Channel and City TV will schedule the broadcasts in time slots appropriate to their markets. Negotiations are under way to bring the broadcasts to audiences in Québec.
For 50 years, the Canadian Rally Championship has been a staple of the Canadian motorsport scene. One of the longest-running national motorsport series in the country, the championship is managed by CARS and consists of rally events from the shores of the Atlantic in the Gaspé region of Québec to the depths of the forests of B.C. CARS is affiliated with ASN Canada FIA.
ATV has established a reputation for quality automotive programming on TV. The popular Driver’s Seat TV, now in its 12th year, has earned faithful audiences across Canada and the U.S. with thoughtful automobile reviews and features. Engine Driven is a collection of four-minute shorts covering high performance products. The show is seen on Canadian Learning Television and Access Alberta and has been released for international distribution this summer. The ATV automotive portfolio includes a new series, Moto World, and the annual Targa Newfoundland rally.
ATV is a Vancouver-based full service HD television and film production company offering multi-camera productions for broadcast throughout Canada and the U.S. For 2006, 124 television episodes in seven series and 10 specials are in production for 86 broadcasters around the world. A film production company, Best Entertainment Corp., has five full length features in development. In addition to its Vancouver office, ATV has production offices in Virginia in the U.S. and in Manchester in the U.K.

McIntosh Aiming for Turkish Points Score

Courtesy Stuart Morrison Public Relations
Montreal, Canada (June 13, 2006) – Istanbul Park in Turkey plays host to the third round of the 2006 World Series by Renault this weekend, 17th-18th June, and Canada’s Sean McIntosh can’t wait to get there!
Having come close to scoring top-ten finishes in the previous two rounds in Belgium, where he was taken out from seventh on the penultimate lap, and Monaco, where he finished eleventh, the 21-year-old from Vancouver is looking to the Turkish track to jump-start his summer campaign and open his World Series points account. McIntosh’s adventure to Eastern Europe sees him faced with learning yet another new race track, this time the 5.340km Istanbul Park, a challenge the young Canadian has risen to admirably through his time racing for A1 Team Canada over the winter and in each of his previous two World Series by Renault starts.
Located in the Tuzla region and opened just last year, the 13-turn anti-clockwise track, designed by Hermann Tilke, hosted the first ever Turkish Grand Prix last August. This weekend’s on-track activities in Istanbul sees the World Series return to its double-header race format following the one-off race at Monaco. While the 30-car field was limited in its track time around the Principality they’ll head into Saturday and Sunday’s qualifying sessions and races in Turkey armed with two days of testing at the circuit on Thursday and Friday – a luxury in comparison!
Prior to his departure today Sean said: “I really enjoyed Monaco but I’m pumped to be getting back on a circuit that was actually designed for modern race cars like our Formula Renault 3.5’s! Monaco was always going to be a bit of a lottery due to the limited track time but this week in Turkey we’ve got plenty of running time to try and get in shape for the weekend’s action. “For some reason I’ve always run well on tracks designed by Hermann Tilke so I’m hoping I’ll be able to replicate that form in Istanbul. It’s a fast, flowing track and not too dissimilar from the Nurburgring where I was quick in pre-season testing. Based on that we’ll hopefully have a good set-up on the car heading into Thursday’s test session. It’s an anti-clockwise circuit so I’ve been preparing for the extra physical demands expected on the likes of my neck muscles. I’ve heard good things about the circuit and I can’t wait to see if for myself.”
With a pair of two-hour test sessions on Thursday, followed by almost another two hours track time on Friday, Sean’s race weekend starts Saturday, 17th June, with qualifying in the morning followed by Race 1 (17 laps) at 2:40pm EET with Race 2 (23 laps) starting on Sunday, 18th June, at 1pm EET.

ACT U.S. DRIVERS LOOK FOR REVENGE IN QUEBEC
WATERBURY, VT – The American-Canadian Tour’s (ACT) U.S. drivers will be looking for revenge when the traveling Late Model series heads north of the border to Quebec’s Sanair Super Speedway, July 8-9 for the $10,000 to win “La Mega Classique”. The stop at the fast 7/8ths mile tri-oval will be the first for the Late Models in some seven years.
At ACT’s earlier stop in the “Belle Province” of Quebec, the advantage at the Banlieu Ford 100 (Circuit Ste-Croix on May 13) went to the locals. Brent Dragon’s third place finish was the best the U.S. drivers could muster. Multi-time Tour Champion, Jean-Paul Cyr was a disappointing fifth, behind 2005 Tour runner-up Dave Pembroke.
Donald Theetge, a veteran racer with Quebec’s Série Castrol, claimed victory, while his perennial nemesis, Sylvain Lacombe finished second. Lacombe’s brother Martin, was sixth.
“To tell you the truth, I was surprised that we didn’t finish better,” remarked Dragon, winner of a 2003 ACT event at the 5/8ths mile high banked oval. “I knew that Lacombe and Theetge would be strong – they finished second and third behind me the last time we were there, but I thought we’d have more for them. I’m looking forward to getting revenge at Sanair,” he concluded.
Dragon is one of eight active ACT Tour competitors who’ve previously raced at Sanair and who have filed an entry for the first of three ACTion Super Series races. Others who have Late Model experience at Sanair include former ACT Tour champions Phil Scott (2002), Jean-Paul Cyr (5 times), and Dave Whitcomb (1992), as well as Mark Lamberton, Joey Laquerre and Rich Lowrey. Laquerre is the lone driver with a previous win at the St-Pie, Quebec track.
Essex Jct, Vermont’s Whitcomb, a 20+ year racing veteran has a Sanair finishing average of 10.5. “I don’t think the cars have changed a lot (over the years) although there will be a lot more competition with the $10,000 to win,” he stated. “I think we’ll have a good tire under us. I’ve always liked Sanair – I don’t think it’s as hard on brakes as some might think. They cool down on the long front stretch just before you have to go into the hardest corner – the first-second turn. You don’t have to brake hard in tri-oval or as hard in the third-fourth turn. I feel Airborne (Speedway, Plattsburgh, NY) and Lee (USA Speedway, Lee, NH) are actually harder on brakes,” he finished.
A purse of more than $70,000 has been posted for the July 8/9 event, which has been dubbed “La Mega Classique”. The winner will take home a minimum of $10,000.

Carl Spiering Motorsports Eaton Electrical Camaro head West

Courtesy Bruce F. Mehlenbacher
JORDAN STATION, ON (June 12, 2006) – Carl Spiering is heading west as part of the team’s professional drag racing swing to western Canada, as the Carl Spiering Motorsports Eaton Electrical Pro Modified Supercharged 1967 Chevrolet Camaro has dates to race in Mission, British Columbia, and Edmonton, Alberta.
Spiering will compete in the Eaton Cutler-Hammer “Thunder by the River” Pro Modified Shootout in British Columbia at Mission Dragway June 17-18 prior to the fourth Annual CARS RV, Marine & Motorsports Rocky Mountain Nationals presented by Torco Race Fuels, race four of the 11-event 2006 IHRA eMax Drag Racing Series June 23-25 in Edmonton, Alberta.
“We are really looking forward to our annual trip west, visiting our fans and spending time with the Eaton Electrical customers and employees,” said Spiering, who makes his home in Jordan Station, Ontario. “The Eaton Road Warrior ran well at the Bend, and the event at Mission will give us some quality time to fine tune her for Edmonton.”
The Eaton Cutler-Hammer “Thunder by the River” Pro Modified Shootout at Mission Dragway is an independent event, open to all competitors and will provide some solid testing for Pro Mod teams prior to the IHRA Rocky Mountain Nationals at Edmonton the following weekend. The Pro Modified racers will have the opportunity to try out the reputed Mission Raceway track surface for themselves, and while doing so compete for some serious prize money in a class with some heavy hitters, such as Scott Cannon, Rick DiStefano, Glen Kerunsky, Trevor Lowe, and Kirk Kuhns.
“Mission will be no walk in the park,” said Spiering. “Cannon, DiStefano and Kerunsky are serious competitors, that would enjoy thumping on the Eaton Road Warrior,” he added. “They have no sense of humor when it comes to getting beat up.”

Litt Takes First Sprint Car Win at Home Track
Ryan Litt took home his first feature win in a full size sprint car on Friday night, and his timing for it couldn’t have been better. At Delaware Speedway, just 30 miles from his home in Lyons, Ontario, the 19 year old took over the lead on lap 10 of the 30 lap feature, after AJ Lane and Bill Tyler made contact racing for the lead, and held the lead the rest of the way to score a popular win with the hometown fans.
As the evening progressed, Ryan was running competitively, but probably wouldn’t have been picked as the winner either. Ryan qualified the #07 BS&B Radiator, OTC/SPX Tools Beast/Claxton Sprinter 6th out of 23 cars in time trials, and finished 5th in his heat race. In the feature, after the customary Auto Value/Bumper to Bumper Super Sprints series inversion of the top qualifiers, Ryan was able to start in 3rd place and rode there until the top 2 cars tangled on the 10th circuit.
Ryan survived a few more cautions and a late race charge through lapped traffic by fellow Owens Petroleum Rookie of the Year contender Chad Goff to bring the #07 to victory lane for the first time.”I’m so happy to win at Delaware,” said Ryan of his first win. “There was a good crowd and they were really loud and happy with the outcome – it was really neat.”
There wasn’t much time to celebrate the victory however as the AVSS series moved 2 hours to the West on Saturday night to the Auto City Speedway in Flint, Michigan. The #07 was 12th fastest in time trials out of the 26 cars in attendance, and finished 4th in the heat race. 12th quickest in time trials meant Ryan could not be involved in the invert for the feature on this night and started 12th in the 21 car feature field.
A relatively uneventful race saw the #07 quietly move forward into the 7th spot by the time the checkered flag flew 30 laps later.”We figure our wide axel isn’t good for short tracks (like Auto City),” said Ryan afterwards, “So next time we race there and at other tight tracks we’re going to run a narrower axel. We just can’t make the car as good as it needs to be (to run up front) on the short tracks. It’s great on the big tracks though – I can’t wait for Toledo and Fort Wayne this weekend.”
Next up for Ryan and the rest of the travelling stars of the AVSS is another busy doubleheader weekend, this time at the Toledo Speedway in Ohio on Friday night, and the Baer Field Speedway in Fort Wayne, Indiana on Saturday night. Ryan was 5th fastest in time trials and 6th in the feature at Toledo last season in just his 2nd start in a winged sprint car. Baer Field, on the other hand, was the site of “the big wreck” which destroyed the #07 last season, necessitating a complete rebuild before another race could be run.
Ryan and the team are confident that they can improve on their results from last year at both venues.
NASCAR PRESIDENT MIKE HELTON TALKS ABOUT STATE OF THE SPORT ON NASCAR RACEDAY
Helton spoke to host John Roberts and drivers Jimmy Spencer and Kenny Wallace about some of NASCAR’s challenges and future plans. Here are the highlights of what he said to SPEED:
Roberts: …in light of last week’s race at Dover (Del.) Downs, where only 42 pit stalls were utilized for 43 starters, where does the responsibility lie between NASCAR and the race tracks on making improvements?
Helton: It comes from both directions. If you look at the history of the sport, as we’ve grown fields, race tracks have, in general, grown with the sport. Tracks have helped the sport grow by modernizing their facilities, especially when a new race track comes along and raises the standard. It’s not an instantaneous thing that can be fixed across the board or throughout every season. It’s a working relationship we have with race tracks to improve the facilities, not only operationally for NASCAR and the race teams that are there, but also for the fans and amenities they experience – to continue to grow the sport.
Spencer: ...why doesn’t NASCAR talk about all the research and development that goes on in the Concord (N.C.) (Research & Development) facility?
Helton: The primary function of the NASCAR R&D center in Concord, and the vision behind it, is to improve the sport – safety, competition and what lies behind the economy of the sport. Keeping car owners healthy is a big element to the future of this sport. The mission there is to get those target elements accomplished and not to take credit for what’s happening, and not to publicize all the activities, but to actually, physically work on those issues. It’s a great commitment by the France family to what I think is to the all of motorsports. Not just NASCAR, but all motorsports sanctioning bodies are welcome to come there and learn. We think motorsports in general being healthy, helps NASCAR be healthy. So the primary function at the NASCAR R&D Center is to make the quality of NASCAR better, and to establish some criteria for the future of the sport, so we can keep it healthy in the garage area.
Wallace: …many of the old school NASCAR Busch Series team owners feel there has been an invasion of NASCAR Nextel Cup Series owners and all of their resources. I have people every week tell me that it’s unfair. Now, I don’t think it’s unfair, but I want your response because it has become such a heated issue.
Helton: It’s not a new issue. I recently spoke to Brett Bodine, and he was talking about when he and Dale Jarrett, back in 1988 and ’89, ran both series. They both did it back then, so it’s nothing new. What I think is new however, in this modern era, is the standard and quality is being raised, as well as the depth of that quality in the Busch Series garage. It’s the uncertainty of what to do next by some car owners. I don’t think NASCAR is going to change its philosophy on the Busch Series or Truck Series. It’s open to whoever wants to participate in it. But, what we do need to pay attention to is how we can change the rules, regulations and the operational procedures – these are issues NASCAR can control. How do we do that so past champions like Joe Nemechek can defeat a Dale Earnhardt on the last lap at New Hampshire, or a Jimmy Spencer can beat a Bobby Allison competing in a Busch race? Those are the types of things I remember seeing, and things NASCAR can work on so the Busch Series can learn from the involvement of Cup teams, yet not be damaged by it.
Spencer: People write in all the time about wanting the competition to be more level and a little closer. Now, no question, the future looks really bright for the car of the future. How close are we to seeing these cars run?
Helton: We’re today closer than we’ve ever been with ‘the car of tomorrow’ being part and parcel of our everyday life on the racetrack. It’s not a new project and it’s been five or six years in the works. We’re now, very actively testing to receive input from crew members and race teams. What we’ve done on paper and in our R&D Center with the help of manufacturers and others is to develop a safer car, a car that is more ‘race-able’ on the racetrack and a car that should be much more economical for car owners to participate in the sport with. Those are the major goals. Right now, what we’re down to is finding a car that is race-able. That’s what we’re doing at race tracks with the teams is find the little minutia we need to make them run nose-to-tail and side-by-side. We will debut the car in Bristol (Tenn.) in 2007 and it will be on a fast track from then on.
Wallace: …There is some talk about a new Busch Series race in Canada. How do you make a decision on whether or not you send Busch or Cup out of the country?
Helton: It comes down to supply and demand. With the Japan exhibition race we ran almost 10 years ago now, there was timeliness within the (Nextel Cup Series) schedule. Today, it’s a lot more difficult to do that with the amount of races we run in the United States. We still had a little bit of room to play with the Busch Series, and it gave us the opportunity to take NASCAR, as a community, to Mexico City to play out in front of millions of passionate race fans. We are still exploring the possibility of doing that, maybe not with a fresh date, but some dates we can (race in Canada) with in the Busch Series. We’re not sure what will come of that, but it certainly has a great deal of interest from our side.
Roberts: …what are your thoughts about Toyota coming into NASCAR Nextel Cup Series competition next year?
Helton: There are two things, one is the Toyota brand in this country is huge. And in fairness to Toyota, they are very much a part of American daily life. There are 41,000 Americans that are employed in this country by Toyota, building those cars and trucks. In today’s world, and as small as it has become, it’s an issue you need to take a great look at, and understand the impact Toyota has, business-wise, on the American citizen. From the competition side, I think it’s always good when a new manufacturer enters the sport. When Dodge came back into our sport a few years ago, I think that was good for the sport. It gave more people an opportunity to compete at this level of the sport. People like Ray Evernham for example with Dodge, and Toyota has Michael Waltrip and Bill Davis to bring up the level of quality. It grows the sport and has kept everything healthy in the Cup Series, and in the Busch Series. I think we’ve seen evidence of health in the Truck Series because of it. I also think it’s a little bit of a wake up call for the other manufacturers to step up their level of participation.

OYSTER BED BRIDGE, PEI (June 1, 2006) - Kent Livingston is counting his blessings after walking away from a ferocious wreck in his No. 16 racecar during a shakedown session at Raceway Park on Tuesday evening. Canadian Bourque 18th in NBE Debut
Bourque, a 2006 Rookie-of-the-Year candidate in the NBE Series was hoping to utilize his previous test session at the track hoping to aid him for race weekend.
NASCAR allowed an optional practice session on Friday with the FTR (Fast Track Racing) team taking full advantage of it. During the session, Bourque turned a lap of 22.636 seconds at 79.519 MPH good enough for 26th on the charts. “I’m still learning a whole lot. We tried some different adjustments and we picked up the pace, that’s good. We’ll go back on Saturday and see if we can further advance ourselves.”
A hot and steamy day on Saturday allowed 30 drivers and team to endure the first full practice session of the season. While turning quicker lap times during the practice, Bourque and the team weren’t comfortable with their 27th position on the pylon. “We picked up again and that’s good, but I would like to see us crack the top-20. That’s our goal for qualifying. Even though I want to do so well, I have to remember I am very new at this type of racing and I just have to pace myself and everything will come around.”
In qualifying, Bourque picked up four-tenths of a second from his practice session. During his two-lap session, he turned a fast time of 22.029 seconds or 81.710 MPH. While he picked up considerably in time trials, Bourque would start his first ever NBE race from the 26th position. “We’re in the show. That’s the biggest thing,” explained Bourque. “I’m getting faster and that’s important. In the race, I just want to finish, it doesn’t really matter where I finish, as long as I finish.”
During the course of the 150 lap event, Bourque battled it all. The heat, spins, pit stops, handling issues and unforgettable racing experience. However, when the checkered flag flew on Saturday, Bourque had maintained his position on the lead lap bringing his No. 10 Full Metals Minerals-Pollara Strategic Public Opinion home in 18th.
“Patience during the learning curve,” Bourque mentioned after the race. “It was a lot of fun, very hot but something I won’t forget. “We met our goals, no doubt about that. Even though I got spun out a couple times, we did what we needed to do, finish the race.”
“It’s very possible that if we had not been involved in the spins, I could have easily had a shot at my first top-ten finish, but I will take this. Obviously, we’re going to continue to improve our race team. We’re going back racing next weekend at Stafford Motor Speedway, we’re looking forward to improving on this weekend’s finish and capture a top-15 finish on Friday night.”
Next up for the NASCAR Busch East Series is the TSI Harley-Davidson 150 at Stafford Motor Speedway in Stafford Springs, Connecticut, set for this Friday, June 16.
In the coming weeks, Bourque will unveil a new racing website.

OSCAAR: Barrie Speedway Next Stop for Team JNE Consulting
MILTON, ON – Team JNE Consulting head to Barrie Saturday June 17 for an Father’s day tilt on the OSCAAR Outlaw Super Late Model Series. John Fletcher and his team head to the 1/3-mile Tri-Oval in hopes the weather is good and the OSCAAR season can get rolling. The previous two stops on the ultra fast series have battled weather in both events.
Team JNE Consulting are chomping at the bit to begin the chase for the OSCAAR title that has eluded them for the last two years. With a feature event win in 2004, the team is poised to try to strike again.
“ We tested here in 2005 and did not get to run so we are looking forward to this event” add John. The team is coming off what looked like to be a good start to 2006 with a qualifying race win before the feature washed out until August 11 at Kawartha Speedway June 2. See you Saturday and celebrate father’s day at the races.
Barrie Speedway Notes: Built in 1965, Barrie Speedway was the first paved stock car racing facility north of Toronto and has been home to Canada's most exciting stock car action ever since. The track was originally built as a tight 1/4-mile oval, the configuration very similar in shape to Martinsville Speedway. The track was widened and the banking was increased in 1999.
The track has been continually renovated and improved since a new ownership group took over in 1999. A new sound system was put in 1999; new washrooms, heated grandstands and a state-of-the-art lighting system are all recent upgrades. Countless improvements have been made to the grounds, including provisions wheelchair accessibility. Barrie Speedway prides itself on being a fun, family-oriented facility A massive expansion of the track itself was undertaken in the fall of 2004.

CASCAR: #10 TEAM READIES FOR MOSPORTSecond Start of Season After St. Eustache Rained Out
In 2004, a missed entry heading through turn number eight at the end of the long Mario Andretti Straightaway resulted in a broken transmission in the #10 NAPA Autopro team car and a disappointing 20th place finish.
Last season, engine problems and a fire ended the team's afternoon just six laps into the scheduled 51-lap affair.
This year's race will be different a determined competitor commented as he addressed his plans for the weekend of racing at the track located north of Bowmanville. " We learned a lot from our past experiences and with a new engine builder supplying the horsepower, we believe we can finish in the top-ten or better this time out."
After only one event run so far this season - a solid fourth-place finish at Barrie Speedway on Victoria Day Weekend- Doug currently sits third in points behind five-time and defending champion Don Thomson Jr of Ayr and opening event winner Scott Steckly of Milverton.
This past weekend’s scheduled event at Autodrome St. Eustache was cancelled due to wet conditions in the Montreal area. That event has been rescheduled for September 9th at the flat 4/10th-mile oval.
This weekend's race and the July 1-2 race at Barrie Speedway are the only two scheduled events before the Super Series heads for events in Vernon, BC and Edmonton, Alberta, Doug is still unsure whether he and his team will be making the western trek. "We should know better once we get through this coming weekend and the Barrie event", he remarked when questioned of his intentions. "It's a costly trip but if we can obtain some additional sponsorship support and we do well in the next two races, we'll be going.
This weekend’s schedule not only features practice and qualifying for the CASCAR Super Series but also for the F1600 Series, Cup Lites, Civic Championship and Mazda MX-5 Cup.
CASCAR teams will qualify on Saturday with their scheduled race slated to go green at 1:30 pm on Sunday.

Delaware: Engine Gremlins Again for McCullough!
This unique event starts off with each driver receiving two time trial laps which is used to set the field for the 35 lap feature race. Driver David McCullough in his # 39 Hosie D’s Donuts / Ross Welding / Boswood Homes / BRITE SITE / Carl’s Used Cars and Trucks / Hugh McKellar / BOC Gases POWERADE Modified turned a quick time of 19.440 second at a average speed of 93 MPH which made him the 7th quickest and only 0.290 seconds of the new track record set by the #20 of Mark Watson. “I am happy with the time considering it was my the first time I have ever time trialed a race car” said Glencoe native David McCullough. After time trials, the quick time driver rolls a dice to set the inversion of the field. Watson rolled an 8 which placed the #39 David McCullough machine on outside pole for the 35 lap feature race.
When the green flag dropped for the $1000 to win feature David McCullough slipped back to the third position after struggling to find grip on the outside groove of the race track. The top 3 cars led by the #11 of Jason Woods started to develop a small lead over the rest of the 24 car field until a caution slowed the field. On the lap 11 restart the #39 machine failed to come up to speed. Driver David McCullough brought his #39 Hosie D’s Donuts / Ross Welding / Boswood Homes / BRITE SITE / Carl’s Used Cars and Trucks / Hugh McKellar / BOC Gases POWERADE Modified down into pit road where the car was diagnosed with a terminal engine failure and claiming the teams second DNF for the season. “It’s too bad, we have had good runs but we just cannot finish the races due to engine problems. We build our own engines, and we will get to the bottom of the problem and make sure it’s fixed for next week” said a dejected David McCullough. The #1 of Barry Newman went to win the race followed by the #20 of Mark Watson and #69 of Lloyd Rawlings came in third.
The next event for the #39 David McCullough Hosie D’s Donuts / Ross Welding / Boswood Homes / BRITE SITE / Carl’s Used Cars and Trucks / Hugh McKellar / BOC Gases POWERADE Modified racing team is at Delaware Speedway next Friday June 16th along with the APC Late Models, Challenger Motor Freight Trucks and also the fan popular King of the Hill Spectator Races. Racing starts at 8 P.M. Sharp!
McCullough Motorsports and driver David McCullough would like to thank their sponsors Hosie D’s Donuts / Ross Welding / Boswood Homes / BRITE SITE / Carl’s Used Cars and Truck / Hugh McKellar and BOC Gases for all of their continuing support. McCullough Motorsports is still searching for primary and associate sponsor for the 2006 season and beyond.
