SPEEDWAY 660: Weekly racing falls to weather

FREDERICTON, NB - With the current and forecast rain today and running
well into evening, officials at Speedway 660 have decided to postpone
tonight's Riverview Ford Lincoln events. There is no Sunday rain date
for this event, so, the next event at Speedway 660 will be the Martin's
Home Heating Sportsman 100, next Saturday Night at 7pm.

SOUTH BUXTON RACEWAY: June 18 Preview

Thanks to Joe Atkinson’s dream, drivers and fans are celebrating South Buxton Raceway’s 40th anniversary this season.

It was 40 years ago this past week – Saturday, June 12, 1971 – when stock cars first took the track at Raleigh Raceway Park’s 3/8th-mile dirt oval.

“I had raced for about 15 years at Ridge, Windsor and other tracks in the area … long before anyone ever thought about building a track there (South Buxton),” said Atkinson, an 80-year-old lifelong race fan from Merlin.

He was in his late 30s when he first came up with the idea of constructing a race track in the southwest Kent County area.

“It appeared the Ridge was going to close and a lot of guys had cars but would have had no place to run if it closed,” Atkinson recalled.

He recruited Dennis Pook and the late Louis Thibodeau to see if they could build a track. They found the perfect location – the Len Bryden farm just south of old Highway 98 in South Buxton.

“It was a suitable size for what we wanted to build,” he said. “We really didn’t look at any other sites because this was just right and the Brydens were behind us.”

Securing the site was the easy part for Atkinson in seeing his dream come true.

Getting approval from the former Raleigh Township, however, was at times a nightmare.

“They were pretty hesitant,” Atkinson admitted.

“We built a model to show them what we had in mind and they agreed to let us build it,” he said, as approval came in September of 1970.

They broke ground that fall and began the bulk of the construction early the next spring.

“We had help from a lot of friends who were interested in racing to get things going,” Atkinson recalled.

“We borrowed tractors from everyone we could. George Massender brought his grader to build the track.”

It was Atkinson’s idea to build the track in a ‘D’-shaped oval, a smaller version of the famous Daytona International Speedway.

“I was at the first Daytona 500 in 1959 and thought it would be great to build a smaller version of Daytona on a dirt track,” said Atkinson, who after retiring after 31 years from International Harvester bought a winter home in Daytona to be close to his favourite track.

Raleigh Raceway Park was a profit-sharing enterprise as management, drivers and car owners all shared in the money.

Raleigh started with three classes – late models, stock and modified coupes – and had approximately 50 cars in its first year.

Records of the opening season are sketchy, but Doc Emerson won the late model feature and Fred Chambers the modified coupe feature on the second week, June 19.

Chambers went on to win the modified coupe points championship in the track’s inaugural season.

Atkinson and the Raleigh Raceway Park Profit Sharing Ltd. operated the track until 1978 when the board of directors decided not to operate the track any longer.

John and Dianne LeClerc took over in 1978 and changed the name to Raceland Speedway.

In 1981, land owners Len and Peggy Bryden took over operations and changed the name to its present South Buxton Raceway.

The Brydens ran the track from 1981-1993, with the exception of 1992 when Bob Robinson ran both South Buxton and Checker Flag in Windsor.

Mike and Heather Crombez ran the track from 1994-97, followed by Anne Rombouts and Blake Outhouse from 1998-2002.

Scott and Shelly Mihalco bought the property prior to the 2003 season and purchased surrounding farm land during their tenure to expand the pits and parking lots.

The Outhouses returned to operate the race track, leasing the facility from the Mihalcos in 2010.

Atkinson looks back with pride at all of the hard work that went into building the race track 40 years ago.

“It took quite a bit of effort, but it was worth it,” he said.

“It was a family affair for us … we all worked at the track. My sons Larry, Ron and Tim all raced.

“I’ve spent my life around racing and have got to know so many great people.

“We enjoyed every minute of it” he said.

South Buxton Raceway is holding a 40th Anniversary Night on Saturday, July 30 – a night Atkinson is eagerly anticipating to renew old friendships.

Pit Notes:

• There will be a pre-race ceremony on Saturday to present Shawn Jones with his Cory Schives memorial race trophies after his Tirecraft Comp 4 feature win last Saturday. The race was called by rain after 11 of 20 laps and the post-race ceremony was washed out. Jones and Schives were lifelong friends, growing up in Blenheim and spent their childhood and teen years together at South Buxton. Schives died of cancer in 2009.

• There were no changes among the top two drivers in all divisions after last week’s action. Jones padded his lead to 27 points over Cottam’s Denis DeSerrano in the Comp 4s; Shrewsbury’s Jim Dale Jr. increased his lead to 61 points over Leamington’s Joel Dick in the Schinkels Gourmet Meats UMP Modifieds; Chatham’s Kirk Hooker has a 20-point advantage over Ridgetown’s Dale Glassford in the Windride Transportation Sport Stocks; and the closest race is the Dover Sanitation Sport Stocks where Merlin’s Eren Vanderiviere is six points up on Essex’s Gerald Martin and eight up on Chatham’s Ken Morrison.

• Next weekend is South Buxton’s first major show of the season with the first leg of the Northern Summer Nationals sprint car series, co-hosted by South Buxton and Ohsweken Speedway. Five series – Southern Ontario Sprints, Sprints On Dirt, Empire Sprints, Patriots Sprints and the Corr-Pak Sprints – will race at Ohsweken next Friday and at South Buxton on Saturday, June 25. Over 30 cars from both sides of the border are expected to take part in the four-race series, which concludes Aug. 19 at Ohsweken and Aug. 20 at South Buxton.

• The gates open this Saturday at 5:30p.m. with racing startng at 7 p.m.

Western Speedway: June 18 Preview

VICTORIA, BC - This Saturday night at Western Speedway, it’s a Four Star night as O’Dell Slinger Service, features the Late Models, Stock Cars, Mini Stocks and Dwarf Cars on the fast 4/10th mile paved oval located in Langford. 

The always popular Late Models will take to the track for their second points event of the year, after the last event on May 14th was rained out after the heat races.  Courtney’s Bart Smith will be looking to make it two wins in a row after winning first Late Model event on April 30th.  With the win Smith is the current point’s leader by a slim 1 point margin over Geoff Morris 212 to 211.  Vancouver’s Jason Terasenko holds down third position with 208 points, followed by Brandon Carlson with 294 and Mike Schott with 175. 

In the Island Stock Car Series Aaron Wilke continues to lead the point standings by 14 points over Ryan Wade 732 to 718.  Wilke was looking for a clean sweep at the last event on June 4th, Wilkie set fast time, and won both the trophy dash and his heat race before finishing third in the 50 lap feature event. Wade gained three points on Wilke by winning his second main event in a row and will be hoping to add another win on Saturday night. Dave Reside holds down the third spot in the championship point standings with 670 points, followed by Rookie Cody Auman with 645, Auman finished second in the main event last time out and should be a threat to break into the winners circle soon. . Kyle Cottam rounds out the top five with 629 points.

In the IMS4 Mini Stock Division Alex Mouner will try to make it four wins in a row as he continues to lead the point standings, Mouner has a 66 point lead over Matt Szauer 733 to 667.   Jeremy Waksel is in third place with 645 points followed by former champion Gilles Parenteau 642 and top Rookie driver Sean Staniforth with 586.

The Island Dwarf Car Club returns with Nanaimo’s Jim Pridge leading the way,  Pridge who has won both events so far this year will have strong challenges this Saturday Night from Jeremy Stevens and local Sprint Car driver Randy Vincent.

Ryan Litt: High-banked holiday

London, Ontario – Ryan Litt and the #07 BS&B Radiator Sprint Car team had last weekend off, following a 4th place at Berlin Raceway on June 4. This weekend they’ll get back in action with races at Toledo Speedway on Friday, and Winchester Speedway on Sunday.

Many drivers and teams found trouble getting a grip at Berlin on the new spec tire for the Must See Racing series. Qualifying times were well off track-record pace, but were very close throughout the field. Ryan’s time of 13.332 seconds placed him 5th in the time trial session, but less than one tenth of a second off Jason Cox's fast time.

"It was real greasy," says Ryan. "With the harder (tire) compound all of us were fighting for grip."

Ryan came home 4th in the feature at Berlin, and finds himself 3rd in the Must See Racing Xtreme Sprint Car Series standings heading into Sunday's Winchester event. Friday at Toledo will mark his 1st start of the season with the Auto Value/Bumper Super Sprints tour. The two high-banked venues are amoung the fastest Ryan and his fellow Sprint Car competitors visit each season.

"Two of my favourite tracks!" says Ryan. "This weekend's average speed is about 140 miles per hour."

Ryan and the team have run well at both tracks in the past, especially at Toledo. Ryan was in contention for the win there last year, before settling for the runner-up spot behind Jason Blonde.

MERRITTVILLE SPEEDWAY: Father's Day Special

Thorold, Ontario (June 16) Three divisions will pour the foundation for an exciting night of racing at Merrittville Saturday July 18th as Cotton Inc forms a great kickoff to Father’s Day Celebrations.

On tap for the special Lucas Oil Weekly Racing Series Program – the Patriot Sprint Tour … the Bobcat of Hamilton 358 Modifieds and the Hoosier Stocks.

”It’s shaping up to be an awesome event,” relates (Merrittville GM) Erica Bicknell-Jones, “there’s something for everyone … especially Dad with the winged Sprint Cars … the Modifieds and the full fendered Hoosier Stocks and a free gift from Elite Products for the first 100 in the Grandstands!”

Saturday’s event will be the third event of 2011 counting towards the Bonnell’s Collision/ Fine Touch Collision King of the Western Swing Series, however it will be the only stop of the mini series in Ontario. Speaking of Canada, this will be the leg of the 2011 PST Canadian Campaign.

Merrittville has hosted two PST A-Mains in the past, with four-time series champion Bryan Howland of Auburn, NY scoring in the inaugural visit in 2006.  Scott Kreutter, of Alden, NY scored his only career A-Main win there the last time the series was there in 2009.  Aside from the pair of 24-year-olds being excited, a number of drivers that have nearly won there are also stoked.

Jared Zimbardi leads the PST point standings by nine markers and just wants to showcase the strength of his No. 35.  The Little Valley, NY driver was a winner at Ohsweken Friday in weekly competition, as well as the last PST-only A-main at Stateline.

Don Adamczyk and Tim Kelly are tied for second in the standings and have a solid history at Merrittville.  Adamczyk of nearby Williamsville, NY, lead early in 2009 event and would love nothing more than to win at the track where his inspiration to switch to sprints was founded.  Tim Kelly was second in that race and was also a winner at the facility back in 1993.

Vern Wasson and rookie Steve Collins and Mitch Brown are among some PST drivers that are expected to make their first start at the Bicknell/Williamson-owned facility this weekend, while sophomore shoe Dave Wickham, Todd Hoddick, Brad Knab, Kyle Moffit and George Suprick are also expected to be on hand.

A slew of competitors from Southern Ontario should also be part of the festivities with Travis Cunningham and Mikey Kruchka among those looking to break through for their first career sprint win.  Glenn Styres, Keith Dempster, Dain Naida, Jamie Collard, Kevin Job, Dave Dykstra, Jim Huppunen, Tom Huppunen, John Burbridge, Tim Zack and Jim Porter among some of the elite names that could throw their name into the discussion Saturday.

F1600: BGR Team Grote wins in Montreal!

MONTREAL, QC - BGR Team Grote enjoyed the ultimate success this past weekend with a well-deserved victory in the Formula Tour 1600 F1 GP support event. The team returned to the GP with the last visit being in 2007 with Kyle Marcelli and Conor Daly. 

With 41 cars to contend with and 3 of the 5 team drivers having never seen the track before it was a steep learning curve. Both Kieran Murphy and JC Cote had been there last season so they had some but limited knowledge of the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.  A very short qualifying session did not help much as a total of 6 laps to learn the track and get a handle on set up put the team under pressure to figure things out in a hurry.  The approach to Saturday's race was to keep learning and use it to get ourselves further up the grid for the Sunday feature.

Qualifying 8th was Trent Hindman making his debut in FF, Chris Vlok lined up 15th, JC Cote in 21, Ayrton Triolo 25th and Kieran Murphy suffering through a misfire the whole session was 36th. The race went green the whole distance and the group enjoyed a 16 lap event with all of the drivers getting more acclimated to the track. Each driver improved and learned what they set out to do and other than a spin with JC who had light contact and was forced to retire, they moved up with Trent coming home in 6th, Chris improving 6 spots to 9th, Ayrton jumping up to 19th despite a spin to avoid another competitor and Kieran improving to 28th with the misfire still not completely cured.

The Sunday race was what we had been working towards and when the team  arrived to a rain soaked track  it was obvious it would be a wild affair with very tricky conditions for everyone. From the start it was Trent making his way methodically through the fast group of leading drivers, one by one he moved forward and he was up to second by the 5th lap, then it was a duel between the reigning Quebec FF Champion Olivier Bonnet and Trent. After several attempts he made the pass on the long straight run down to the final corner and took the lead, he then was able to stretch his lead and secure the win for the BGR Team Grote group. Chris Vlok had another solid run with a 9th place finish despite being pushed off the road for the second straight weekend and losing a couple of spots on the final lap.  Ayrton had made his way forward from his grid spot but a late spin dropped him back to 18th at the flag. He had climbed to 14th at one point but none the less enjoyed his first trip to the GP. JC had moved up but the tricky conditions caught him out as he had a spin and made contact with the wall in his first ever FF rain race.  Kieran with the misfire now cured finished 28th after a spin took back the 6 spots he made up during the first 7 laps.

"It was a great weekend for  BGR Team Grote despite the troubles we had with Kieran's elusive misfire and the bad luck that JC encountered. Trent did an outstanding job and we are very excited about the rest of the season as he will contend for wins from here on out.  Chris did a great job as well, he has the speed and as he becomes more familiar with the circuits and the competition he will definitely be on the podium soon. Ayrton did a good job and would have had better results if not for a some evasive moves he had to make to miss cars and spin himself in doing so. It was our first weekend with JC and he is a pleasure to work with. He was thrown into the deep end with the weather as he had never driven a FF in the rain. Some more seat time would pay dividends and we hope to see him again soon. I have to thank all our crew for their hard work, Mark, Gibby, David, Christine, Kyle, and our engineer Eric Langbein provided great cars. The Formula Tour 1600 officials did a great job and worked through some difficult situations with the courtesy we have now become accustomed to with them. We were also very grateful for attendance of our guests from Grote who were treated to a win by their own car! " commented team principal Brian Graham.

Scotia Speedworld's Weekly Racing Series Returns Friday Night

HALIFAX, NS - Scotia Speedworld’s Weekly Racing Series returns to action this Friday Night after a two week hiatus.  This week 5 divisions of racecars will hit the 3/10 mile oval under the lights, including the Hydraulics Plus Bandoleros, Lumbermart Thunder and Lightning cars, Trucks and the Coco Beach Legends. The Dartmouth Dodge Sportsman are off this week but return to action on June 24th.  

Heat races to determine the qualifying order for each feature will begin at 7:00 pm. Features are expected to get underway by 8:00 pm.

Admission for the Weekly Racing Series – is $12.00 for adults; $2.00 for youth aged 8-15; children 7 and under are admitted free. All children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Pit admission is $15.00 and restricted to those 16 and older.  Tickets are available at the gate on race day. OHSWEKEN SPEEDWAY: Bring a friend to Brant County Night

Ohsweken Speedway is ready for another action-packed edition of Friday Night Thunder this week for “Brant County Night” presented by Lighthouse Tattoos. All fans with proof of residence in Brant County will be given two for one admission this Friday! Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Cars, Twin 15 lap features for the Lighthouse Tattoos Thunder Stocks, HRW Automotive Mini Stocks, and Pierced Parts Bombers are all on the card, plus Mini-Van Figure 8 racing, and a demolition derby.

The Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Car division championship chase is already heating up, with just 9 points separating the top 5 drivers in the standings. “The Tilbury Tornado” Kyle Patrick leads the way heading into round 3 this Friday, but Grimsby driver Travis Cunningham is just 2 points behind. Defending champion Dave Dykstra of Port Colborne is currently third, followed by New York driver Kyle Moffit, and Michigan’s Dain Naida. Moffit claimed the opening night victory on June 3, while Patriot Sprint Tour points leader Jared Zimbardi went to the Engine Pro Racing Winner’s Circle last Friday. Zimbardi and the other PST regulars will be at nearby Merrittville Speedway on Saturday, and some are expected to come a day early to get some laps at Ohsweken before the first 2 rounds of the Northern Summer Nationals, which are coming up June 24 at Ohsweken, and June 25 at South Buxton.

Larry Czinege, Jr. of Ridgeway leads the way in the Lighthouse Tattoos Thunder Stock division by 11 points over Caledonia’s Lee Winger. Two more Caledonia drivers - Ryan Dinning and Mike Thorne - are tied for third along with Brantford’s Brad Herron. Czinege claimed the feature win on opening night, while Winger got the win last Friday. All of the Thunder Stock drivers are looking forward to this Friday’s Twin 15’s, which always provide great racing. The drivers will have some extra cash on the line this week too, as Engine Pro Racing will give the winner of each Twin 15 feature a $50 bonus.

Dundas driver Karl Sault remains undefeated so far in his rookie season in the HRW Automotive Mini Stock division. He dominated on opening night, then drove through the field from 19th on the grid to win again last Friday. Sault sits atop the points standings by 14 markers over 2010 rookie of the year Jake Brown of Brantford. Ohsweken’s Steve Hess is third, followed by Caledonia veteran Mike Evers, and Mike Sarantakos of Smithville.

Rodney Rutherford of Waterdown is leading the Pierced Parts Bomber standings heading into this week’s race. Rutherford got the win on opening night, and leads last week’s feature winner Trevor Roszell by 7 markers.. Rockton driver Dave Patton, Caledonia’s Craig Dowd, and Sarah Rutherford of Dundas round out the top 5.

OSCAAR MOSPORT PREVIEW: Inside Track Motorsport News 50

OSCAAR returns to action on Saturday, June 18 at Mosport Speedway for the third of twelve events on the 2011 schedule in what promises to be an exciting night of events. The Inside Track Motorsport News 50 marks the first of two events at the Bowmanville half-mile oval, with the other taking place July 23. Several drivers will look to continue their success in the quest for the 2011 OSCAAR championship crown.

Lloyd Ritchie will look to return to action with a strong finish after a successful outing at Kawartha Speedway where he finished in second. Ritchie suffered some poor luck early in the season at Sunset when engine trouble prevented him from competing in the first event of the year. Ritchie looks to be successful in his ‘Orange Blossom Special’ under the lights on Saturday night.

“I just want to have a good steady run and stay out of the trouble” stated Ritchie about the upcoming race.

Jeff Dunford and Charlie Gallant will both look to rebound from unfortunate circumstances in both of the first two events. Dunford drove the final forty laps of the feature race at Sunset on opening night without any brakes. Two weeks later at Kawartha, Dunford was involved in a lap 34 spin involving Charlie Gallant and Dave Taylor, but Dunford described the damage as mostly ‘cosmetic’. Gallant also had difficulties at Sunset and was unable to complete the event and suffered a similar fate when he was involved the aforementioned accident at Kawartha. Mosport offers an opportunity to regain some ground in the 2011 points race.

Glenn Watson attempts to continue his perfect start to the season after winning at both Sunset and Kawartha. Watson has stated on numerous occasions he has to constantly improve his car in order to compete with the talented field. Watson will be without a doubt the car to catch come feature time Saturday night.

Returning driver Dave Taylor has started his season off with two top-five finishes and surely aims to continue the streak and potentially put the car in victory lane. Taylor has been happy with his car so far this season, but has also said “more work on the car” is necessary in order for a win to occur. Whether or not the hard work pays off will be seen at Mosport.

Todd Campbell’s rookie-of-the-year chase has taken off well with Campbell posting two sixth place finishes to start the season. Intending to run a full schedule, Campbell’s success lies in repetitions and much practice as continues to familiarize himself with his Outlaw. Look for Campbell to break in to the top-five in his first OSCAAR visit to Mosport.

Wayne Isaacs finished in the top-five of both events with fourth and fifth place finishes, respectively. Tyler Hawn looks to better his career-high eighth place finish at Kawartha and Hawn certainly has all the tools to put his #42 Chevrolet up front.

Last year’s Mosport events were won by Jeff Hanley and Derrick Tiemersma, with Hanley winning the spring race and Tiemersma taking the summer event.

The pit gates open at 2:30pm with practice for OSCAAR beginning at 3:30pm. Final OSCAAR practice takes place at 5:00pm and will be followed by a 5:30pm driver and crew chief meeting. The first green flag is scheduled to drop at 6:00pm. OSCAAR will take the green flag in the third set of heats following Mosport’s pure stock division and the Ontario Legends. Anticipation is high for the Mosport event as many drivers have finished their off-season preparations and are ready to race. The racing is guaranteed excitement with Ontario’s fastest show on asphalt.

Canadian Returns to Formula Renault 3.5 Action 
Toronto, Canada (June 15, 2011) - Following a busy week back in his native Canada - attending his first Grand Prix as an official reserve driver for Marussia Virgin Racing, Robert Wickens returns to the 2011 Formula Renault 3.5 Series this weekend with the fifth round of the season hosted at Germany's Nürburgring Circuit, Saturday 18th - Sunday 19th June.  
A second-place podium finish last time out on the streets of Monaco boosted the 22-year-old from Toronto from third to second in the Driver Standings, Wickens currently sitting just one point behind his Carlin team-mate, France's Jean-Eric Vergne.  Robert's fourth podium of the year, a tally which includes a second round victory at Spa-Francorchamps, proved very welcome after a disappointing no-score in Monza's third-round outing earlier in May due to a technical failure and accident. 
With the season approaching the half-way marker in Germany, Wickens is focused on a return to the top step of the podium, confident that the pace he has demonstrated through the first four rounds in his Marussia Motors-backed entry will continue to keep him in the title fight.  The 4.56km, 12-turn Nürburgring Circuit is one of the few remaining European tracks where Robert has yet to break the top-three, a fact he's hoping to rectify this weekend. 
"Of all the tracks I've competed at in Europe it's only the Nürburgring in Germany and Donington Park in England where the podium's eluded me," stated Wickens candidly.  "Hopefully we can change that now as we get back into a regular race weekend after Monza, which ran with the World Touring Car Championship, and Monaco which was obviously with F1.  We're back to being the headline event which is great but more importantly I think the Nürburgring should really suit us. 
"We've been strong everywhere this season and I'm not expecting any surprises this weekend.  That said, we're always looking to improve and there's definitely been times already when we've hurt our chances of successes.  Monza was obviously a bad weekend for us despite our pace.  We have to start taking advantage of our ability to be in a place to win every race.  The competition at this level is tight but we're up there every weekend and a mistake-free race meeting will reap its own rewards!" 
Round 5 of the Formula Renault 3.5 Series starts with Race 1 held at 1pm CET on Saturday 18th followed by Race 2 at 9:35am CET on Sunday 19th June 2011.

Richard Petty Driving Experience (RPDE), the North-Carolina-based worldwide leader in NASCAR stock car ride and drive entertainment, recently announced that it is coming north with a series of dates in July, marking the first-time motorsports enthusiasts will have the opportunity to drive one of “The King’s” cars on a Canadian racetrack.

Richard Petty Driving Experience - named for the 7-Time NASCAR Cup Champion and 2010 Hall of Fame Inductee – will visit three tracks in Ontario and one in Nova Scotia during its inaugural “Canadian Summer Tour”; Kawartha Downs & Speedway (Fraserville, ON), Delaware Speedway (Delaware, ON), Sunset International Speedway (Innisfil, ON) and Riverside International Speedway (Antigonish, NS).

“We’re real excited to bring the Driving Experience to Canada this summer” said Petty, who was on hand for the announcement in Toronto. “I know, first-hand, that some of the greatest fans in the world are right here. I loved coming here to race back in the day and I know they’re going to love getting in our race cars.”

It was a fitting setting for the announcement, as Petty’s first-ever NASCAR-race took place at Toronto’s CNE stadium in 1958.

NASCAR Canadian Tire Series Television Package Announced

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (June 14, 2011) – Coming off a record-setting viewership audience in 2010, TSN again will be the television home to the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series. It is the fifth consecutive season for TSN, Canada’s sports broadcast leader, to televise series events.

Ten of the 12 scheduled NASCAR Canadian Tire Series events in 2011 will have a one-hour race recap show telecast nationally on TSN on a tape-delayed basis. Additionally, there will be a season in review show after the season has been completed.

The events at Circuit de Trois-Rivieres (Que.) and Montreal’s Circuit Gilles Villeneuve will be recorded live in their entirety and aired later the same day. The Trois-Rivieres race on Sunday, August 7 will air at 5 p.m. ET following the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Pa., while the Montreal race on Saturday, August 20 is scheduled for telecast at 12:30 p.m. ET leading into live coverage of the NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

“When Canadian racing fans thinks sports, they think TSN,” said George Silbermann, NASCAR vice president regional and touring series. “Fans of the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series will continue to have the best of both worlds this year, experiencing the thrill of the Canada’s premier stock-car racing series in person when the series comes to a nearby race track, while catching the action from all the races across the country on TSN.”

The programs are produced by James Robinson Associates Ltd. and include race coverage, driver interviews and features. All coverage will be broadcast in High Definition.

TSN’s NASCAR Canadian Tire Series coverage complements its full-season coverage of NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and NASCAR Nationwide Series events. Many of the Canadian Tire Series recap shows are set to be telecast either leading into or immediately follow other NASCAR programming.

2012 NASCAR Hall of Fame Class Announced

Yarborough, Waltrip, Inman, Evans And Glen Wood Comprise List Of New Inductees

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (June 14, 2011) – NASCAR announced today the 2012 class of inductees into the NASCAR Hall of Fame. The five-person class, which will be officially inducted in a ceremony during the weekend of Jan. 20, 2012 at the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte, N.C., consists of: Cale Yarborough, Darrell Waltrip, Dale Inman, Richie Evans and Glen Wood.

Members of the 55-member NASCAR Hall of Fame Voting Panel met today in a closed session in Charlotte, N.C., to vote on the induction class of 2012. The announcement was made by NASCAR Chairman and CEO Brian France in the NASCAR Hall of Fame’s “Great Hall.”

The class was determined by votes cast by the Voting Panel, which included a nationwide fan vote conducted through NASCAR.COM. The accounting firm of Ernst & Young presided over the tabulation of the votes.

As was the case for the first two classes of the NASCAR Hall of Fame, the results of this year’s voting were competitive. Yarborough led with 85 percent of the vote, followed by Waltrip (82%), Inman (78%), Evans (50%) and Wood (44%).

Also receiving votes were Jerry Cook, Cotton Owens, Raymond Parks and Herb Thomas.

The fans’ five picks, in alphabetical order, were Richard Childress, Benny Parsons, Fireball Roberts, Waltrip and Yarborough.

The five inductees came from a group of 25 nominees for induction into the 2012 NASCAR Hall of Fame class that included:

Buck Baker, Red Byron, Richard Childress, Jerry Cook, H. Clay Earles, Richie Evans, Tim Flock, Rick Hendrick, Jack Ingram, Bobby Isaac, Dale Inman, Fred Lorenzen, Cotton Owens, Raymond Parks, Benny Parsons, Les Richter, Fireball Roberts, T. Wayne Robertson, Herb Thomas, Curtis Turner, Darrell Waltrip, Joe Weatherly, Glen Wood, Leonard Wood and Cale Yarborough.

The NASCAR Hall of Fame opened on May 11, 2010 in Uptown Charlotte, N.C. The 150,000 square foot entertainment complex honors the history and heritage of NASCAR and the many who have contributed to the success of the sport.  In its first year of operation, the NASCAR Hall of Fame entertained more than 270,000 customers, making it the second most-visited sports hall of fame in North America.

Class of 2012 Inductees:

Cale Yarborough

William Caleb Yarborough was the first driver to win three consecutive NASCAR premier series championships, from 1976-78. During his three-year dominance, Yarborough won 28 races – nine in 1976, nine in ’77 and 10 in ’78. His final championship points margin in those three years was never fewer than 195 points and was as much as 474 in 1978. Yarborough totaled 83 victories in his 31-year career, which ranks sixth all-time. His 69 poles rank fourth all-time. He also won the Daytona 500 four times (1968, ’77, ’83-84), a mark that ranks second only to Richard Petty’s seven. He was named one of NASCAR’s 50 Greatest Drivers in 1998.

Darrell Waltrip

A three-time NASCAR premier series champion (1981-82, ’85), Waltrip won all three with legendary driver/owner Junior Johnson. Waltrip is tied with Bobby Allison and Jeff Gordon for third all-time in series victories with 84. His 59 poles rank fifth all-time in NASCAR premier series history. He competed from 1972-2000, which included a 1989 Daytona 500 victory in a Rick Hendrick-owned Chevrolet. He currently is a commentator on FOX’s NASCAR broadcasts. He was named one of NASCAR’s 50 Greatest Drivers in 1998.

Dale Inman, NASCAR Hall of Famer Richard Petty’s crew chief at Petty Enterprises for nearly three decades, set records for most wins (193) and championships (eight) by a crew chief. Inman won seven of those championships with Petty (1964, ’67, ’71, ’72, ’74, ’75 and ’79), and a final one in 1984 with Terry Labonte.

Richie Evans

The recognized “king” of Modified racing, Evans captured nine NASCAR Modified titles in a 13-year span, including eight in a row from 1978-85. In the first year of the current NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour format in 1985, Evans won 12 races, including a sweep of all four events at Thompson, Conn. Evans ranked No. 1 in the 2003 voting of the NASCAR All-Time Modified Top 10 Drivers, and he was named one of NASCAR’s 50 Greatest Drivers in 1998.

Glen Wood

Glen Wood laid the foundation for the famed Wood Brothers racing team as a driver in NASCAR’s premier series. Competing on a semi-regular basis, mostly at tracks close to his southern Virginia home, Wood won four times – all at Bowman-Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C. Wood, of course, is best known for his collaboration with brothers Leonard and Delano in Wood Brothers Racing. The Stuart, Va.-based team, which dates to 1950 and remains active, has amassed 98 victories.

Parts for Trucks Pro Stock Tour Set to Roar into Riverside

(Halifax, NS. June 12, 2011) – The Parts for Trucks Pro Stock Tour heads to the high banks of Riverside International Speedway this Saturday, June 18th for the Ron MacGillivray Chev Buick GMC 100.  This will be the first event of the season for the 1/3 mile track located just outside of Antigonish in James River, NS and round three of twelve for the touring series.  Last season Greg Proude of Springvale, PE took the checkers at this event. This time around Proude will have beat 25 of Canada’s best drivers in order to be a back to back winner of the Ron MacGillivray Chev Buick GMC 100.  Racing action starts at 6:00 pm, with Atlantic Tiltload Time Trials set to begin at 5:10 pm.  Box office and grandstands open at 2:00 pm.

Shawn Tucker of Fredericton, NB leads the championship standings by the slimmest of margins, just one point ahead of Timberlea, NS’s Wayne Smith and John Flemming of Halifax, NS, who are currently tied for second. Donald Chisholm of Antigonish, NS sits just ten points back and will look to make up ground at his home track. Kent Vincent of Crapaud, PE rounds out the top five and sits fifteen points behind Tucker. 

NASCAR Canadian Tire Series driver Jason Hathaway will join the field for the Ron MacGillivray Chev Buick GMC 100. Hathaway of Appin, ON will pilot the #09 Vortex Brakes Ford Fusion out of the Nova Racing stable.

Vortex Brakes also joined the Tour this season as the sponsor of the Hard Charger Award. Each race the driver who gains the most positions at the conclusion of the feature receives $100 cash award. In addition to the cash award the driver also receives a full set of Vortex brake pads valued at approximately $800.00.  Shawn Pierce of Blockhouse, NS took home the Vortex Brakes Hard Charger Award at the season opener CARQUEST 100 and Jerome Kehoe of Sydney, NS picked up the prize at the Lucas Oil 100; Kehoe started in the 16th position and finished third.

Opening the Ron MacGillivray Chev Buick GMC 100 is the Napa Sportsman Tour who will be kicking off their season with the Highland Building Supplies 50 lap feature.

NCATS: Great start, but a tough finish for Shepherd at Delaware

LONDON, ON - Pete Shepherd and the #7 National Exhaust/Hy-Tech Drilling Challenger, had a great start at Delaware Speedway, but mechanical issues caused him to retire from the Keystone Light 200 early.

Shepherd struggled early in practice finding a balance in the race car. Initially the team was facing a lose race car, but they made several changes towards the end of practice that helped the team, and gave Pete Shepherd a sense of comfort going into qualifying.

Before qualifying, Shepherd pulled the #1 position, which usually is the most feared position to pull, as no one wants to qualify on a dirty race track. “Before qualify, I talked to the team and Mike McColl, and they assured me that the division before us would not leave any rubber on the track, and the surface would be relatively clean for my qualifying run. I didn’t worry about it, and I put down a smooth lap, and was surprised to see the time hold up,” Shepherd explained.

After two laps of qualify Shepherd’s time of 19.482 seconds, held up for the entire session, giving Pete Shepherd his first NASCAR Canadian Tire Series pole. “It felt good to get the pole, because we really struggled in practice, and we didn’t think we had the speed it would take to start near the front for the Keystone Light 200. The team worked really hard, and hard work pulled off as we had a fast car going into the race,” Shepherd replied.

After the green flag dropped, the top three cars pulled away from the field; #7, #17 and #22. Shepherd led the first 17 laps, but was overtaken by the #17 and the #22. “I settled in third as I recognized the #17 and #22 had really good cars. It’s a long race, and I knew towards the end I would have a fast car, as my car was not fading away on old tires.” Shepherd described. After the first caution of the race, before the half way point, Shepherd followed the #17 into the pits. The crew filled up his car with fuel, and as he drove away the crew noticed the car was leaking gear oil.

“When we went back to green, my tires were covered in oil, and I had a hard time even hanging onto the car. I knew the situation was getting worse when I could smell burnt gear oil, and I lost a lot of top end speed. At that point our day was pretty much done.” Shepherd stated. After 200 laps, Shepherd wound up with a DNF in 17th position. Pete Shepherd Motorsports looks forward to taking their efforts to the Toronto Indy, where Shepherd will make his first road course appearance since 2004.

NCATS: Steckly retains points lead with 2nd place finish at Delaware

LONDON, ON - Scott Steckly, driver of the 22 Racing/Canadian Tire Dodge Challenger, had another solid weekend, starting on the inside of row two and moving up one spot for a second place finish. 

In practice the team turned a few laps and the No. 22 Dodge came down pit road to make a few adjustments.  The crew worked on the car changing the drive shaft after Steckly indicated he felt a vibration. The No.22 went back on the track and posted the second quickest time.

Steckly drew one of the last qualifying positions and took to the track determined to take the top spot and with a time of 19.546 Steckly would be third in a field of twenty cars. “With the changes we made to the car I wanted to make sure it was going to do what I wanted when I got to the first turn of qualifying so I was being a little easy on it.  We were gunning for the pole position today, but starting on the inside of row two is okay.”

When the green flag dropped Steckly was on the gas and quickly settled into second and maintained that position until the first caution came out at lap 57.  All the leaders came down pit road for fuel, but Steckly stayed out to take over the lead and pick up the bonus points. On the restart the No. 22 easily pulled away from the pack.  On lap 102 the second caution came out and the No. 22 Racing/Canadian Tire Dodge came to pit road for service. The pit crew went to work changing the right side tires and Steckly was one of the first cars out of the pits, but came back to pit road under the same caution to top up on fuel.  The pit stops were quick and clean, but most of the pack took fuel at the first caution so they only came to pit road once for adjustments, while Steckly made two stops so he restated in eighth.

There was not much rubber on the track which made it difficult to pass and as result the leaders all maintained the position they restarted in until the third caution came out on lap 151, when most of the leaders came to pit road for tires moving Steckly back up to second on the restart.

The final restart came with less than 10 laps to go and Steckly was on the back bumper of the first place car of Don Thompson Jr. and did everything he could to pass him, but Steckly raced the No. 8 clean and took home third podium finish in three events this season.  

 “We are real happy with the night, the car was good and there were lots of people from Canadian Tire here so I’m glad we could put on a show for them. I want to thank all my sponsors and my team; they work so hard at the shop and at the track to give me the best car possible.”

This weekend’s events at Delaware Speedway will air on TSN on Sunday June 26 at 1 p.m. ET. 

The next stop for Steckly and the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series will be in two weeks’ time at Mosport International Raceway in Bowmanville, Ontario. Steckly continues to be in first place in the NASCAR point standings heading to the second of five road course events this year.
