Joe Gibbs who?.... GM crows about re-signing with Hendrick

RICHMOND, Va. - Chevrolet, the winningest nameplate in NASCAR, will continue its partnership with championship team Hendrick Motorsports in NASCAR competition in 2008 and beyond.

"Rick Hendrick knows how to win championships, and we're proud that those wins have been in Chevrolets," said Ed Peper, Chevrolet general manager. "With four strong Hendrick teams and drivers, three currently in the Top 10 in Driver standings, we are looking forward to even more exciting racing this year and continued success with the Hendrick organization in the Bowtie brand going forward."

In 23 years (1984-2006) of NASCAR competition, Hendrick Motorsports has garnered six NEXTEL Cup Series (formerly Winston Cup) championships, three Craftsman Truck Series titles and one Busch Series crown, making it one of stock-car racing's premier organizations.

Rick Hendrick is the only team owner in NASCAR's modern era to earn more than 150 Cup Series victories and is currently at 160 Cup wins - all of them coming in Chevrolets. Hendrick Motorsports' win at the first "Car of Tomorrow" race at Bristol earlier this year also earned Chevrolet its first Impala SS win and Chevy's 600th win in NASCAR Cup competition.

The four full-time NASCAR Cup teams of Hendrick Motorsports slated to run in 2008 include four-time champion Jeff Gordon in the No. 24 DuPont Chevrolet; 2006 NEXTEL Cup champion Jimmie Johnson in the No. 48 Lowe's Chevrolet; Casey Mears in the No. 5 Kellogg's/CARQUEST Chevrolet; and new addition Dale Earnhardt, Jr., who has only driven Chevrolets in his NASCAR career.

"I'm not sure I'd be in the car business or racing business if it weren't for Chevrolet," Hendrick said. "My first dealership was a Chevy store and the first car I ever owned or raced was a '31 (Chevrolet) that my dad and I built when I was 15. I've always been a Chevy fan, a Chevy dealer and a Chevy racer. "

So much of our success on the track is due to the commitment Chevrolet has made to its teams. The impact of the technology and engineering support they provide is immeasurable, and the dedication they've shown to our sport is second to none. We take great pride in being a part Chevrolet's winning tradition and look forward to continuing our longstanding relationship."

Chevrolet has 614 wins in NASCAR NEXTEL Cup competition, more than any other manufacturer. Team Chevy drivers have won 18 of 25 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup races in 2007 giving Chevy the lead in the Manufacturer Cup standings. Currently Chevy drivers hold nine of the top 12 spots in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series standings.

Sale of Barrie Speedway announced the day before it will host the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series

The new ownership group at Barrie Speedway just issued the following press release:

Sale of Barrie Speedway Complete ... Popular Barrie Speedway Attracts New Ownership

Barrie ON, September 7th, 2007

Barrie Speedway, a 1/3 Mile, paved tri-oval located north of Toronto between Barrie and Orillia, has been sold to a new ownership group.Barrie Speedway has been growing in popularity. The racetrack has been running regular Saturday night racing for over 40 years and has quite a history of popular drivers and loyal fans.

With the growth the track has experienced in the last few years, including the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series events, there has been growing interest in the facility.“It was time for us”, states previous owner and track President, Brad Moran.

“My partner, Steve St. Onge and I, after being approached by the new owners, decided that maybe it was time to bring some new energy and experience to the track. I think we’ve done a pretty good job with it. I’ve been working at it for 7 years now and I’m pretty proud of what we’ve created here. We believe in change and we know the track is going to be in pretty good hands with the new owners”, he added.

“As a racer, I wanted to make sure the track went into the hands of a management team that will remain committed to providing a great facility from the drivers perspective. Not just the quality of the facility, but of the racing organization as well. We also know it’s important to provide cost effective programs that make racing affordable for new drivers to get into. After spending time getting to know the new ownership team, they understand that the real products are the cars and the drivers and crews behind them. They also know business, and racing is a business. I think it’s a great step forward for the Speedway,” stated Steve St. Onge.

The new owners are three experienced businessmen from Barrie and Orillia: Dave Simpson, Jim Payetta and Mark Hayter. “We’re very excited about this deal”, says Jim Payetta, the spokesman for the group. “It was one of those things that came together quite quickly. Dave, Mark and I have all run successful businesses and we see opportunity with the Speedway. With the NASCAR Canadian Series and the weekly NASCAR Whelen Series, we’ve got a solid foundation on which to build. There’s been lots of rumors floating around and we wanted to let everyone know who we are and what our plans are. We do have plans, which we will share over time, but we want to make sure people don’t expect things to happen too fast. We’re just getting our feet wet. Right now it’s business as usual,” said Payetta.

“We will be making some improvements right away, but we’ll be taking things one step at a time”, he added. The track has undergone many improvements in the last few years, including being re-built as a 1/3 mile tri-oval from a 1/4 mile oval. Barrie Speedway has a solid and loyal fan base, which was an important consideration for the new owners.

“We visited a number of racetracks that ran regular Saturday night programs and we were most impressed with Barrie. The fans and drivers are great and there is a real history to the place. This track belongs to the fans, the drivers and their crews. We view our role as being the next custodians of the Speedway and to do what we can to help Barrie Speedway realize it’s potential,” stated Jim Payetta.

An official ‘handing over the keys’ ceremony will take place on Saturday September 8th when the NASCAR Canadian Series visits Barrie Speedway for the ATTO 300.

NCATS: Micks a favorite going into Barrie’s NASCAR event... “Anything can happen, as we’ve seen that this year.”

MOUNT ALBERT, ONTARIO (September 6, 2007) – With six top-five finishes in the last seven races, including two wins in the Beyond Digital Imaging sponsored Ford, team driver Kerry Micks will be one of the favorites at this weekend’s ATTO 300 at Barrie Speedway in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series.

“Our record this year is good considering,” said Micks, of Mount Albert, ON. “We’ve had two dismal finishes this year, and our record should be better than it is.”

The stock car expert currently sits in second position in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series Top 10 Driver Points.

“Everything considered we’re having a good season thanks to BDI and our associate sponsors, a dedicated crew, and family,” added Micks. “I certainly couldn’t do this without all of their help.” BDI is Canada's leading digital printing company an official partner and licensee of NASCAR in Canada.

Micks trails series leader Andrew Ranger by 122 points going into race ten in the 12-race NASCAR Canadian Tire Series and is tied with D.J. Kennington in second position.

“There’s no question that we have a lot of ground to cover to catch the first place team,” he went on to say. “But then again four races ago we were in 13th position, so anything can happen as we’ve seen that this year.”

The ATTO 300 will take place Saturday, September 8 at Barrie Speedway. For information about Barrie Speedway tickets and camping, call (705) 487-0279 or visit online at http://www.barriespeedway.com/

Beyond Digital Imaging Inc. (BDI), Canadian Detailing Services, Cathcart Trucking and APX Racing Gear and Incentives Inc., Nur America, and HP Canada are sponsors of Micks Motorsports.

Another podium finish for Twofast Racing at Mosport

Montreal, September 4th, 2007 – It was in Mosport Ontario on September 1st and 2nd that the Twofast Racing team was for one more Castrol Canadian Touring Car Championship race of the year in the Super Touring class. With a lot of ups and down for the Mazda and another prestigious podium for the Subaru, everything lets us think that the team will keep its very good top 5 position for the final 2007 standings.

The driver of the number 04 MAZDA, Christian Raymond explains : « During the Saturday practice, I got off line in corner 8 cause I wanted to let another car by, but ended up losing the rear end and smashing in to the wall. It gave my mechanics a bit of a hard time! I got a good qualifying session, I made my best time of the year on this track. Nevertheless, I went off again this time in corner 2, which again gave a little work to my crew members. We took the decision to install new tyres in the back only to stabilize it a bit, which proved to be a poor choice, I was glued to the track and a lot of drivers passed me... »

For Sunday’s race, Raymond follows: « I began in 12th position but I was stopped since I forget to put my safety net up. I got black flagged, and had to start last. After coming up to the 8th position in the ST class, my transmission broke a little after the midway of the race. It was the first DNF of the season and first major mechanical failure as well, so it’s hard to complain, these things happen. »

Éric Leblanc, driver of the number 140 Subaru WRX/STI, came back with yet another podium, finishing 3rd. In spite of the 5th position gained in the qualifying session considered a bit deceptive, Eric says: « I had a good start in the pre-final race but I lost some positions in the first turns. I started the final race in 6th position. I had a small battle with Steve Anderson’s SRT4 car, which allowed me to get in 5th position for almost all the race. I finally ended in 3rd position, thanks to the first two drivers taking each other out ! »

In brief, Christian keeps positive and hopes to stay in the top 5 position for the final standings but he will have to fight since a few drivers got closer to him in the points this weekend. « At least, I had all possible bad lucks happen had the same time, hopefully we wont have anymore for this season! » he says to us. As for Eric, even if the 1st place in the Championship seems unreachable, he intends to keep is well deserved 2nd place !

The next race of the Castrol Canadian Touring Car Championship will once again be in Mosport, on September 15th and 16th.

The drivers want to thank their loyal crew Yves Bédard, Dominic Brazeau, Alexandre Boiteau, Mathieu Ouellette and Marilou. As well as all of our precious partners for there support: Rythme Urbain, Rack’N’Roll, InMotion Promotion, Motul, Lettra dSign, TwoFast Performance, Mazdaspeed, International Allstars, mazdatuning.com and Rire en Coeur.

NCATS: Barrie event preview

· Veteran Don Thomson Jr. Focuses On Everything During A Race
· Subway 200 Post-Race Notes
· Pressure Mounts With Three To Go

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Sept. 4, 2007) – Veteran drivers play the game very well. They have all the answers to the questions which have been asked dozens of times over their careers. They see the big picture and don’t get caught up in the minutia of a race, or a season, for that matter.

The CASCAR Super Series graduated several savvy and wily veterans to the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Sirius Satellite Radio for its inaugural season of racing in Canada. Perhaps the most accomplished of that experienced group is Don Thomson Jr. (No. 4 Home Hardware Chevrolet). Hailing from Ayr, Ontario, he won five consecutive CASCAR Super Series championships from 2001 through 2005.

Not surprisingly, Thomson, once again, is in the hunt for the championship. This time, though, it’s under the NASCAR banner which takes the been-there-done-that element out of the equation for him.

"No doubt, it would be nice to win, but there is still a lot of racing left," he said.

Thomson, who got caught up in an early incident in last weekend’s Subway 200 at Cayuga Speedway Park, holds the fifth spot in the championship point standings, 169 points off the pace of leader Andrew Ranger (No. 27 Wal-Mart/Tide Ford). While that sounds like a large deficit, keep in mind that Thomson entered the race 91 points in back of Ranger. One moment of being in the wrong place at the wrong time can easily lead to drastic movements within the standings.

This Saturday’s race at Barrie (Ontario) Speedway, a 1/3-mile bullring of a track, can easily result in an early departure from the action.

"You have to be careful at Barrie, but even then it may not matter if the three or four guys around you are not careful," said Thomson. "You just do what you need to do and hope for the best from everyone else."

Track position is an obvious key, putting heavy emphasis on qualifying well, but the overall dynamics of the race and the track diminishes that factor quite a bit.

"With the track being fairly short, differing pit strategies and the double-file restarts, you’re in traffic all night long," Thomson stated. "It’s easy to get turned around there, but all of that is what makes it fun – the challenge and the survival."

Being in the midst of a championship battle is not at all new to Thomson and he admits to thinking about everything from points to calculating risk to specific race tactics not only for himself, but also of his competitors.

"I think about all kinds of stuff on the track," he stated. "Everything from what comes next in the current race to what is the next race and how does it relate to what I am doing at the minute."

Some drivers, as the season winds down, have someone feeding them information on the current status of all the championship contenders. Some don’t want any information of that type and just want to run the race. And others, like Thomson, have an innate feel for the situation.

"It’s usually down to two or three guys, so I don’t have too much of a problem figuring things out for myself. We all know what we need to have happen before the race starts anyway."

Thomson also feels that it’s human nature to think about those things during the race.

"I don’t know how anyone can’t," he said. "We put all this hard work in all year long to win the championship. There is no way to put it completely out of your mind – at least I can’t."

The first ever NASCAR Canadian Tire Series championship hangs in the balance over the final three races of the 2007 season. If the racing throughout the season is any indication, then the title will be decided on the final lap of the year. After all, that’s the Canadian Tire Series way.

Subway 200 Post-Race Notes

Ø Spreading the wealth … With his win in the Subway 200 presented by Sicard Holiday Campers, Derek Lynch (No. 77 Allied Steel Buildings/Canadian Shield Dodge) became the sixth different race winner this season in the nine NASCAR Canadian Tire Series events. There have been five different Bud Pole winners this year with the most recent being Don Thomson Jr. (No. 4 Home Hardware Chevrolet).

Ø Dodge picks up second win of the season … Lynch gave Dodge its second win of the season in the Canadian Tire Series. D.J. Kennington (No. 17 Castrol/Krispy Kreme Dodge) won the July 1 Canada Day race at Barrie for Dodge’s first win. In the manufacturers’ standings with just three races to go, Chevy leads the way with 62 points. However, Ford and Dodge are well within striking distance with 55 and 54 points, respectively. Pontiac has 27 points. For each event, the winning car’s manufacturer receives nine points. The next-highest finishing maker gets six points and the third and fourth-place manufacturers are awarded four and three points, respectively.

Ø Mobil 1 Oil "Command Performance of the Race" Award … As an added bonus for his NASCAR Canadian Tire Series victory at Cayuga Speedway Park, Lynch collects $1,500 from Mobil 1 as a reward for his effort.

Ø Hot, hot, hot … Without question the hottest driver in the Canadian Tire Series, and perhaps in all of NASCAR, is Kerry Micks (No. 02 Beyond Digital Imaging Ford). He rebounded from an early incident, and a subsequent penalty from NASCAR officials, last Saturday evening to notch a fourth-place finish. It was his sixth top-five effort in the last seven events.

Ø Mopar Fast Five … This program awards the top-five finishing Dodges in each race. In this race, obviously, Lynch’s Dodge was the top finisher and was awarded $2,000. Kennington finished third overall, but was the second-highest finishing Dodge which earned him $1,250. Ranked third among the Dodge entrants was Brad Graham (No. 19 Full Throttle Energy Drink/Challenger Freight Dodge Charger), who logged a fifth-place finish and a $1,000 bonus. The fourth and fifth-highest finishing Dodges were those of Jason Hathaway (No. 3 Snap-on Tools/Super 8 Dodge Charger) and Randy MacDonald (No. 71 Castrol Dodge Charger). They finished ninth and 10th and earned $500 and $250, respectively.

Ø Ranger stretches lead … With his fourth runner-up finish in the last five races, Andrew Ranger (No. 27 Wal-Mart/Tide Ford) continues to execute the strategy of points racing success with consistency being highly rewarded. He went into the Subway 200 with a 91-point lead on Thomson, who found trouble on the track in the early going. As a result, Ranger (1,472) grew his lead to 122 points over Micks and Kennington, who are tied at 1,350. Micks gains the advantage and assumes the second-place position due to his two wins this year.

ATTO 300 NEWS & NOTES

Ø The race … This event is the 10th race for the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Sirius Satellite Radio in 2007. It is the second of two visits to Barrie Speedway this season. The ATTO 300 is scheduled for an 8:45 p.m. E.T. start on Saturday, Sept. 8. Joining the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series at Barrie Speedway will be several local classifications including the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series. This year is Barrie’s first season as part of the NASCAR weekly racing series’ family of tracks. They are joined in Canada by Autodrome St-Eustache in Quebec, Edmonton International Speedway in Alberta and SunValley Speedway in Vernon, B.C.

Ø The track … Barrie Speedway is a 1/3-mile tri-oval located near the shores of Lake Simcoe north of Toronto. The track opened in 1965 and underwent a complete facelift in late 2004. At that time, the track was expanded from a 1/4-mile oval to its current layout. Also included in that work, was an overall widening of the racing surface along with the addition of a pit road to accommodate longer races. What makes pit road unique at Barrie is that it is located on the backstretch of the track.

Ø Just three to go … With just three races to go in the inaugural season of the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Sirius Satellite Radio, the already intense racing action is sure to become even fiercer. Five of the last six races have been decided by last-lap exchanges of the lead. In the July 1 race within the cozy confines of Barrie’s 1/3-mile track, the lead changed hands 13 times before Kennington collected the win.

Ø Ticket information … Information for the ATTO 300 can be obtained by calling the track at (705) 487-0279 or by logging onto www.barriespeedway.com. Advance tickets can be purchased at Jeff Walters Diamonds, conveniently located at 331 Bayfield Street, Suite 203, in Barrie and at St. Onge Recreation, located at 74 Saunders Road in Barrie. Tickets also can be purchased online from the track’s website. And tickets will be available on race day at the track. Camping will be available at Burl's Creek Family Event Park. Contact Burl's Creek directly at (705) 487-663 for reservations or check them out online at www.burlscreek.com. Please note this special traffic advisory this weekend – traffic heading to Barrie Speedway from the south should exit highway 11 at Line 7, follow line 7 to Ridge Road and then take Ridge Road to Line 8. The direct exit to Line 8 from Highway 11 will be congested due to the automotive flea market.

NCATS: Brown good to go at Barrie with loaner from Kennington

Despite taking a heavy hit to his Haldex/NAPA Dodge at Cayuga Speedway last Saturday, Doug Brown will return to action at Barrie Speedway this weekend but in a borrowed car.

“Our primary car was heavily damaged in that crash last weekend and based on our evaluation, it’s beyond repair,” the Brantford racing veteran conceded. “DJ Kennington, who we have been working with on our road course programs, and I worked out an agreement to finish out the year in the car that Randy MacDonald drove to a 10th-place finish at Cayuga. The deal will allow us to fulfill our commitment to our sponsors and hopefully continue our pursuit of a higher place in the standings.”

The car is the same car Doug used in four road course races this season but modified for the ovals. It will be equipped with his motor and drive train.

Although he injured his right hand in the Cayuga crash, the Haldex driver is confident he’ll be ready to go for the balance of the season.

The gritty competitor has had his share of broken bones and bruised body parts before through his previous involvement in competitive motocross and hockey but until last Saturday hadn’t taken a really bad jolt in a stock car.

“I jammed my thumb back in the accident and thought I might have broken my wrist, but the x-rays didn’t reveal anything so I should be ok. I’ve still got some marks on my chest and shoulders where the seat belts and safety restraints did their job,” he added. “We (competitors) should all be thankful for the safety requirements mandated by NASCAR.”

Brown dropped to 15th in the standings as a result of the Cayuga accident but remains confident he can still gain a spot or two with some solid runs over the next three weeks.

“We’ve already spoken to our Title sponsor Haldex and they are happy to see us continue for the balance of the year,” Doug reported following Wednesday’s meeting in Guelph. “Given that the borrowed car is basically white, the paint scheme will be a reverse to the team’s familiar blue car/white trim colours but our sponsors don’t have any hang-ups with that. They have been really supportive of our efforts todate.”

Saturday’s race at Barrie is the 10th of 12 events on the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Sirius Satellite Radio. The “ATTO 300” is scheduled for an 8:45 p.m. E.T. start on Saturday.

HB Motorsports is pleased to have Haldex Limited as its Title Sponsor with NAPA Autopro supporting team programs through its role of Major Associate Sponsor role. Bicknell Racing Products; World of Graphics; HurryPrint Imaging Centre; WIX Filters; KWIC Internet; Gates Canada; BOC Gases; Brochures etc; Leitch Performance Engines; Strodes BBQ & Deli; and BrentZone Graphics are also valued members of our Associate Sponsorship Marketing team.

NCATS: Kent Nuhn at Cayuga... A Bad Start Turns into a Positive Finish

After a grueling couple of weeks of disappointment, Kent Nuhn, driver of the No. 09 the Fuel Genie/Nuhn’s Auto Recyclers Pontiac Grand Prix and his team were ready for some improvement and a good finish.

The weekend did not start off how Nuhn and the team would have liked. After the practice sessions, they had to change the brand new transmission that they had just put in. Unfortunately this meant having to put in the older transmission to which they have had problems with.

The night started off with a bang. Skydivers floated from above the crowd and with racing legend Bobby Allison giving the command to start engines, everyone was ready to go.

Unfortunately for Nuhn, things went bad pretty quickly. With having to change the transmission to an older one, as soon as Nuhn put the car into gear on the first lap the gear shift broke. They pulled the car in to begin repairs, but an eighth lap red flag for a multi-car accident involving No 4 Don Thomson Jr., No 84 J.R. Fitzpatrick and No 10 Doug Brown, stopped the team from quickly fixing the car. After the clean-up crew quickly cleaned up the track, the team was able to finish the repairs on the car and returned to the track on lap 27.

Everything was going well, or as well as could be expected, until lap 100. Nuhn pulled the car back onto pit road and then behind the wall. This time it was electrical, the battery was not holding a charge. After a few more laps, Nuhn drove the car back onto the track for the rest of the race. He realized that coming out of the corners, the charge was good but it would quickly fade, but as quickly as it started, it quickly fixed itself. This enabled Nuhn to finish the race in the 19th position. After the race, the team was all smiles, for finally being able to finish the race despite all the problems.

“We had a good car, but it’s always the little things that get you in the end,” Nuhn said. This 19th place finish brings Nuhn up 17th position in points. The team is now looking forward to return to what they consider their home track at Barrie Speedway for the Atto 300.

Strachan wins President’s Trophy at Mosport

After missing the majority of the 2007 season, Malcolm Strachan left no doubt as to who was the leader of the pack. With the Mobil-1 Corvette fully fitted with a new engine lubrication system, as well as some other little tweaks, Strachan dominated the Labour Day weekend.

Qualifying had Strachan’s Mobil-1 Corvette on pole, ahead of Nick Majors’ Dodge Viper Competition Coupe. Race One was a comfortable win for the Prince Edward County driver, winning by eight seconds over Majors. Race Two provided a small amount of tension, with lapped cars allowing Majors to close the gap to Strachan with two laps to go. Strachan responded with two quick laps to pull out a comfortable lead at the finish.

For the final race, Strachan wanted to better the best lap-time for the Mobil-1 Corvette, which was 1:24.252. At the green-flag, the Mobil-1 Corvette rocketed into the lead, pushing as hard as possible. By the third lap, Strachan held the lead that stretched the full front straightaway. Strachan settled into a comfortable, yet quick pace, and eventually won with a margin of victory nearing 20 seconds, with an average race speed of over 162 km/h. Strachan also managed to shatter his personal best time, with a stellar fastest-lap of 1:23.793.

Strachan will return to Mosport on September 15/16 for the BEMC Indian Summer Trophy Races, and will finish the season at Mont-Tremblant on September 22/23 for the Fall Classic.

AP has the story on Joe Gibbs' Racing's move to Toyotas here.

GM reacts to Joe Gibbs Racing switching to Toyota.

Statement from Brent Dewar; General Motors North America Vice President of Vehicle Sales, Service and Parts Regarding Joe Gibbs Racing's decision to sign with another manufacturer:

"General Motors has been associated with Joe Gibbs Racing for 16 years working together winning races and championships. While we understand the business nature of racing, we are disappointed in J.D.'s decision and announcement today. With our long-standing relationship and record of winning with them, we hoped they would remain with Chevrolet. We will continue to support our JGR drivers in this year's Chase for the Championship. We wish JGR well as they go forward, and Chevrolet will compete against them on the track next year to defend its title as the winningest name in racing."

NCATS: Scott Steckly Cayuga Report

MILVERTON, ON – The 22 Racing team headed to Cayuga Speedway this past Saturday, September 1 for the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series race. This was the second race at Cayuga this season, with the first resulting in a 12th place finish for driver Scott Steckly. The Milverton, ON driver was hoping he would be able to put on a good show for new sponsors Leafs TV and Wilride Transport. The #22 Leafs TV Dodge Charger practiced and qualified in the middle of the pack, with Steckly started in the 14th position.

The drivers really came to race on Saturday night as the race saw two major crashes mark some of the highlights of the race. The first crash came seven laps into the race and involved four of the front running cars. Because of that crash Scott moved up to fifth race in the race, after only a handful of laps. That crash was all Steckly needed to get the Leafs TV Charger running at the front of the pack. It took the next 50 laps for Scott to work his way into fourth place by passing #3 Jason Hathaway.

Off a restart on lap 84 Steckly put the Leafs TV Dodge Charger up into the top-3 passing #25 Jim Lapcevich. Scott would remain in third place until lap 113, when he got caught on the outside line and was passed by three cars putting him back to sixth place. The team had an excellent pit stop on lap 124 and that gained one position for the team, moving the team back into the top-five.

However, the day was not all good news for Steckly. He was involved in an incident with three other cars on lap 157, as a result a load bolt holding in the right rear spring in place broke and the team lost 39 laps fixing the problem on pit road under green flag conditions. Steckly finished in 16th place.

Scott was disappointed in the result saying “we are thrilled to have Leafs TV onboard as a primary sponsor for the rest of the year at our Ontario races. We had a great car tonight, but just didn’t get the finish again. We have had top-five cars every race this year, which is a credit to out crew chief Greg Gibson and the crew at the shop”.

In the drive for the 2007 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series Championship, Scott Steckly currently sits in 10th place.

The 22 Racing team is proudly sponsored by: Leafs TV, Erb Group of Companies, AW Millwrights, Thermo King of Eastern Canada, Diamond International (Edmonton, AB), Wilride Transport, Sommers Motor Generator Sales, D.H. Jutzi Limited, Groeneveld, Twin City Graphics, Chris Root Precision Machine, Stratford Motor Products, Generation Filtration, Mr. Transmission (Guelph), Commercial Babcock, Classy Collectibles, Glasvan Great Dane, Motorsport Design, Milverton Garage.

You can catch a replay of this race this Saturday, September 8 at 11:00 AM on TSN. For more information on the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series visit NASCAR.ca and for information on 22 Racing contact kyle_erb@hotmail.com.

NCATS: Whitlock leads laps and finishes 11th at Cayuga

HAMILTON, ON - No. 39 Dickies/Hamilton Tiger Cats/NMT Dodge Charger driver Dave Whitlock led laps during the the second half of Saturday nights Subway 200 at Cayuga Speedway but settled for an eleventh place finish at the end.

Whitlock who has been bit by racing gremlins of all sorts this year changed a motor prior to the second practice session on Saturday afternoon. After qualifying seventeenth the team had a discussion and decided that they needed to change the carburetor prior to the 200 lap main event.

According to NASCAR rules, in an impound race event if you make any changes to your car after qualifying you are relegated to start in last place. After the warm up laps, Whitlock dropped the No. 39 Dodge back to the tail end of the field for the start, and it appears the carburetor change was the right move as by lap forty he had moved into twelfth and was looking at the top ten.

Just before the half way point Whitlock brought the car to the attention of his crew who made major adjustments as well as two tires and fuel. The Dickies Dodge Charger lined up on the grid in tenth for the re-start. He would then start his march to the front where on lap 130 he took the lead. After a short stint at the front, the cars handling started to go away and it continued to get worse as the race progressed and an eleventh place finish was the result.

"We really thought the car would stay good for us once we got a chance to make the changes we needed on the pit stop," stated Whitlock after the race. "We used up a little too much getting up through the field and just did not have enough tires left at the end. If we hadn't gotten spun in the late stages of the race, we for sure would have finished solidly in the top 10. Still we will take the eleventh place and build on that for next week at Barrie."

Derek Lynch in the No. 77 Allied Steel Buildings Dodge Charger posted his first win in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series followed closely by Andrew Ranger and D. J. Kennington. Kerry Micks and Brad Graham rounded out the top five. Ranger now takes a 122 point lead into the next event at Barrie over Kerry Micks and D. J. Kennington who are tied for second.

All three Whitlock entries, including teammates Mark Dilley and Pierre Bourque had in-car cameras and should have some great shots for the broadcast of the Subway 200 on Saturday Sept. 8th at 11 a.m.

Barrie Speedway will host event number nine in the twelve race NASCAR Canadian Tire Series on Saturday Sep. 8th. Time Trials will take place at 5:30 with the Autograph Session scheduled for 7:15 p.m. and the green flag drops at 8:45 p.m. for the Atto 300. NCATS: Top-five finish for Micks at Cayuga NASCAR event

Micks rallies from early incident to take fourth in race: now second in standings

NELLES CORNERS, ONTARIO (September 1, 2007) – Kerry Micks finished fourth in Saturday’s Subway 200 at Cayuga Speedway in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series, despite an early race incident putting him a lap down early in the race.

The finish was the fourth consecutive top-five finish for Micks and his Beyond Digital Imaging sponsored Ford stock car.

Micks was involved in a multi-car incident early in the 200-lap race that put the team a lap down.

“That got me down and honestly I was ready to give up”, said Micks. “We pitted at lap 90 for fresh tires, which helped us go through the field, which got us our lap back, but it wore out the car out in the process.”

Micks fought back all night, regained his lead lap status for an impressive top-five finish vaulting him into second position in the Top 10 Driver Points with three races to go in the 12-race NASCAR Canadian Tire Series.

“I’m pleased with our finish, the team did a great job keeping me in contention for the top-five finish which moved us into second position in the points,” added Micks.

Derek Lynch took advantage of the last lap crash for the win, followed by Andrew Ranger in second, D.J. Kennington in third and Kerry Micks in fourth in the race that 14 lead changes between 10 drivers and 6 cautions for 40 laps.

The next event for Micks Motorsports will be race ten in the 12-race NASCAR Canadian Tire Series at Barrie Speedway in Barrie, Ontario on the third-mile tri-oval on September 8-9.

NCATS: Pierre Bourque Gets Spun Out of a Top Finish at Cayuga

CONCORD, NC (September 2, 2007) – It was back to the ovals for the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series, Pierre Bourque and his Whitlock Motorsports team on Saturday night for the running of the Subway 200 at Cayuga Speedway Park in Nelles Corners, Ontario. Bourque started 18th and finished 13th in the event.

As respectable as that result was, it could have been much better if not for some contact on the course.

"I am very proud of my Whitlock Motorsports crew,” said Bourque. “They gave me a top five car at Cayuga and we were gaining huge ground from my place on the grid, until I got spun trying to pass for sixth place at the half-way point of the 200-lap race.

“That flat-spotted my tires and I felt like I was skating around on ice with barely any grip. The car was quite a handful, but I kept it on the lead lap, picking off the odd spot or two whenever I could.’

The skating was the least of Bourque’s problems though, as he trucked on to the finish.

“Things got worse when the sway bar broke and I lost three or four laps when NASCAR called me in under the green flag to check it out with less than 20 to go. The most nagging part of the whole race is that the guy I was passing when I got spun went on to win the race. Under the circumstances, my 13th place finish was small consolation.”

Still the fact that Bourque’s loyal team and great sponsors put him in a position to win was cause to be happy.

“I need to thanks to my sponsors Driving.Ca, Canada.Com, Working.Com, Dose.Ca, Sonomax, and Immunotec for their support. We had a great car for the race and the effort that everyone put in really showed through.”

Bourque will now prepare to enter next weekend’s ARAC RE/MAX Series event at Chicagoland Speedway (IL), where he’ll drive an entry fielded by Fast Track Racing.

Bourque is splitting his time between the Whitlock Motorsports NASCAR Canadian Tire Series entry and Kevin Buckler's The Racers Group team in Grand-Am road racing. He also made his NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series debut last month at Indianapolis’ O’Reilly Raceway Park and will be making additional announcements on his future racing plans very shortly.

CRC: Exceptional starting grid for Defi!

Stouffville (Ontario), September 3, 2007. Fourth round in the Canadian Rally Championship presented by Subaru and Castrol, Defi Ste-Agathe/Duhamel will take place Friday and Saturday September 7 and 8. With 43 teams entered, including two Canadian overall champions, the rally promises to be exciting to the thousands of fans expected to watch the event on Friday in Sainte-Agathe in the Laurentians, and in the Petite-Nation area on Saturday (special stages in and around Ripon, Montpellier and Duhamel).

Leading the championship with wins at Rocky Mountain and Baie-des-Chaleurs rallies in May and June, and winner of the last two editions of Defi, defending 2006 Canadian champion Antoine L’Estage, from Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, QC, will again be the crowd’s favorite. Driving a Hyundai Tiburon 4WD, he is teamed with co-driver Nathalie Richard.

Second in the championship, only two points behind, Andrew Comrie-Picard (Toronto, ON) and American co-driver Marc Goldfarb, in a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 9 RS, wants to add to his Perce-Neige win this season to regain command of the championship.

But these two won’t be the only ones aiming for a win. About ten teams can seriously look for victory at Defi this year, starting with 2005 Canadian champion Peter Thomson (Toronto, ON) and American co-driver Rod Hendricksen in a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 8, making their comeback to national competition. Also coming back are Jon Nichols (Lachine, QC) and Carl Schenk (Montréal, QC). They are moving up from their famous FWD VW Golf to a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 6.

Third in the overall championship and leading Production 4 class after a podium finish in Baie-des-Chaleurs rally, Martin Gauvin and co-driver Daniel Duchesneau (both from New-Richmond, QC) in a Subaru Impreza WRX, are entering Defi for the first time. A very talented driver, Gauvin is considered the underdog in this event. Also to be watched are Mathieu L’Estage/Yannick Napert (Subaru Impreza WRX), Rejean Losier/Philippe Poirier (Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 5), Peter Reilly/Phil Assad (VW Gold 4WD), John Cassidy/Dave Getchell (Subaru Impreza WRX), Mathieu Dubé/Éric Losier (1st in the Novice standings with their Subaru impreza WRX), as well as Group 5 champions Zbigniew Szewczyk and Tomasz Karzinski (Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart), from Calgary, AB.

Rally Defi Ste-Agathe/Duhamel will run its first stage on Friday at 2:15 PM, to be followed in early evening with the famous Palomino stage. The 43 teams will run the stage three times. On Saturday, all the teams move west and south of Ste-Agathe to the Petite-Nation area. The finish is scheduled for 5:00 PM in Ripon.

For more information on the event, visit its official website at www.rallydefi.com. The official program of the event, including maps and schedule, can be found in Pole-Position Magazine presently in newsstands throughout Quebec. The TV production of the show is ensured by ATV Productions. Information on the Canadian Rally Championship and the various Canadian rally competitions is available at www.carsrally.ca.

NCATS: Lapcevich deprived of NASCAR win at Cayuga

NELLES CORNERS, ONTARIO (September 1, 2007) – While Jeff Lapcevich of Fastline Motorsports had a sixth place finish in Saturday’s NASCAR Canadian Tire Series, brother and teammate Jim had his first new series win taken away from him on the final lap at Cayuga Speedway.

Jim Lapcevich and Peter Gibbons traded the lead five times in the final 37 laps, but on the final turn of the final lap the two locked bumpers and tangled after getting involved with a slower car, sending both leading cars spinning out of contention. Lapcevich was able to get back on the track, but lost valuable time and his #25 Fastline car finished a disappointing eighth.

“I expected that of Peter (Gibbons). He always runs hard and he wanted the win as much as me,” explained a disappointed Jim Lapcevich after the 200-lap race. “We’ve been running great and that makes two for two podium finishes taken away from us in the last two oval races by other teams.”

The EMCEA Transport – Tim Hortons Monte Carlo with Jim Lapcevich at the controls started 13th, and exchanged the lead with Gibbons the first time at lap 163 of the Subway 200, which set up a dramatic duel to the finish. “There’s no question we were the car to beat in the final laps,” he went on. “The team worked hard all day and gave me the late race set-up I needed to close the deal. It’s unfortunate it didn’t work out the way we had planned, but we did put on a great show the fans.”

Derek Lynch took advantage of the last lap crash and won, followed by Andrew Ranger in second, D.J. Kennington in third and Kerry Micks in fourth. “The EMCEA Transport – Tim Hortons Chevrolet took a pretty good licking, we’ll get it fixed go to Barrie and see if we can’t put this thing in the winners circle and put an end to our unfinished business.”

Team driver Jeff Lapcevich had a steady run all night after starting 19th in the race that 14 lead changes between 10 drivers and six cautions for 40 laps. The next event for Team Fastline Motorsports will be race ten in the 12-race NASCAR Canadian Tire Series at Barrie Speedway in Barrie, Ontario on the third-mile tri-oval on September 8-9.

PMRA: Joe Boniferro takes PMRA final at Grand Bend, first two-time winner in PMRA history

Bruce Boland takes 2007 PMRA Championship in tight points battle

GRAND BEND, ONTARIO - (September 2, 2007) – The Pro Modified Racing Association has provided exciting action on the track throughout its existence, and the 2007 PMRA final at the Grand Bend Motorplex over the Labor Day weekend certainly provided a dramatic finish to the season.

With the running of this final event, the PMRA finally has a repeat winner, as a different team won each of the previous 13 events. Joe Boniferro of Niagara Falls, Ontario, beat Bruce Boland of Hamilton, Ontario in the final round to become the PMRA’s first repeat winner. Boniferro, driving the Smokin’ Joe’s 1999 Dodge Avenger, ran a 6.625-sec, 216.86-mph pass over Boland’s 6.780-sec, 213.06 effort.

“I’m just ecstatic to become the first two-time winner of this series,” said a pleased Boniferro after the race. “All my four sons are here today, along with the whole crew”, he went on. “We came here with a whole new combination, and I would have been content just to have qualified. But everything went our way, and I’m very happy.”

NCATS: CRASH ENDS NIGHT EARLY FOR BROWN AT CAYUGA

Doug Brown’s quest for a strong run before his hometown fans and a group of supportive sponsor guests came to a crashing halt at Cayuga Speedway on Saturday night.

The Brantford competitor was caught up in a wild, multi-car crash just eight laps into the running of the “Subway 200” at the fast 5/8th-mile oval south of Hamilton.

Brown had started tenth in the 23-car field and was clearly on the move when Mt. Albert’s Kerry Micks clipped the rear of Ayr, Ontario’s Don Thomson Jr’s Monte Carlo at the end of the fast backstretch causing the pole sitter to spin in front of the oncoming field. The resulting melee left no room for Brown to avoid hitting Thomson’s car, the wall and JR Fitzpatrick’s machine.

“I could see the cars staring to spin and bunch up in front of me but that’s the fasted part of the track and there just wasn’t anywhere to go to avoid hitting Donnie and anyone else in the area. I also got a shot from behind but that too was unavoidable

Although the Brantford competitor suffered minor injuries to his hand and wrist in the crash, it was his car that was the centre of his attention as he inspected the damages in the infield.

“It’s too early to determine our status for the next race a Barrie,” he responded when asked for his thoughts. “We’ll know better when we get the car back to the shop and start tearing it down.

“It’s a darn shame this had to happen when it did but we’ll see what we can do to finish the season provided the engine wasn’t damaged with the impact the car took. It wasn’t a great way to host our sponsors either, but I’m sure they understand that this is a highly competitive sports and accidents do happen.”

The impact of the crash broke the motor mounts and shifted the car’s front end. The crew will attempt to fix the car for the three reaming races but with no weekend breaks in between it will mean overtime for those involved in the repairs.

Warkworth, Ontario’s Derek Lynch won the event in what can only be described as a bizarre finish.

Lynch had worked his way up to third spot in the closing laps and was content to finish there until leaders Peter Gibbon of Stouffville and Jim Lapcevich took one another out as the began exiting the final turn. The ensuing spin opened the door for Lynch to speed to the finish line ahead of Roxton Pond, Quebec’s Andrew Ranger and St Thomas, Ontario’s DJ Kennington.

With his second place finish, Ranger widened his lead atop the standings and now has to contend with. Micks who recovered to finish fourth in the race and up to second in the standings. Kennington and Gibbons also leap-frogged past Thomson who dropped to fifth-place in the points race as a result of the accident.

NCATS: Tough Race Salvaged by Hathaway & Team 3 Red/EHR

Nelles Corners, Ontario- Jason Hathaway and Team 3 Red/EHR competed in the ninth race of the season this Saturday night in the Subway 200- at Cayuga Speedway Park near Hamilton. Returning to the oval tracks on the 2007 Canadian Tire Series, Team 3 Red/EHR set the bar high for the night aiming for a top 5 finish in the event.

The #3 Snap on Tools Dodge looked great in practice on Saturday afternoon. Jason was comfortable with his race car after practice. "The car feels pretty stable all the way around the track. It should be pretty good for the race tonight."

In front of a great crowd at Cayuga Speedway Park, Team 3 Red started in the 12th position. As the race got underway it was obvious that the 200 laps were going to be action filled. The Team's plan was to let the field shake out a little and get into a comfortable race pace on the 5/8 mile paved oval.

At the half way point of the race, Hathaway was battling back from going one lap down to the leaders after a back marker spun Hathaway in corner #1. The Team bought the car in for inspection after the spin, changing a right rear tire and filling the car with fuel. Hathaway worked his way back up to the 13th spot after the pit stop. With great driving and some perseverance, the Team received the "Lucky Dog" award on lap 153 earning their lap back.

The last 47 laps of the race were great for Hathaway as his aggressive, yet smart style of driving shone through making some great passes gaining valuable positions. With team spotter Mark Busse helping from the spotter's stand, Hathaway made it safely through one final crash as the field took the checkered flag and finished 9th in the field of 24 cars.

Crew Chief Giulio Montanari discussed their evening. "We had a good night tonight. The car was great in practice, but the dropping temperature of the cool evening changed the race track. As the night went on we could not compensate for the temperature change in the handling of the race car. We are proud of our Team and will take our 9th place proudly representing all of our great supporters and corporate partners."

The next event for Jason Hathaway and the #3 Snap on Tools Dodge will be at the cozy 1/3-mile Barrie Speedway oval next Saturday night, September 8, 2007. The last time the Team visited the track, their car was strong and the Team is looking forward to a great finish.

Team 3 Red/EHR is proud to be associated with their great sponsors and supporters. Team 3 Red/EHR thanks Snap-on Tools, Super 8 Motels, Advantex Freight Forwarders, Fast Eddie Racewear and Choko Motorsports, Briggs & Stratton, Castrol, Napoleon Fireplaces & Barbeques and Xilarate Sports Fluid, BOSCH Canada, Praxair and The Busted Knuckle Garage.

NCATS: KENNINGTON PUTS CASTROL DODGE ON PODIUM AT CAYUGA

DJ Kennington and the Castrol Dodge Team prepared for the final third of the NASCAR Canadian Tire series racing season with the intent of putting on a charge for the championship title. The team made a great step forward collecting a podium position this past weekend at Cayuga Speedway.

DJ Kennington also brought along a little help this weekend with veteran racer Randy McDonald behind the wheel of another Castrol Dodge sporting the number 71. Kennington has run several Busch series events already this year in McDonald’s prepared car and plans to take part in several others. “Randy is very good at getting a handle on the cars performance quickly and it helped us out for sure” said Kennington. “And hey I guess I owed him after he put me in the Busch car so much this season” he joked.

The Castrol Dodge was quick right from the first practice session at the 5/8 mile oval located near Hamilton, Ontario. Kennington would post the third quickest qualifying time and line up the Castrol Dodge on the inside of row two for the main event.

Following an early incident that collected several top cars Kennington found himself at the front of the field. “We were on the pole for the first race of the year at this track and didn’t have the finish we wanted but the way the car felt early I thought we could really have something. As the laps ticked away and the hard fought competition continued the handling of the Castrol Dodge began to change. “I’m not sure exactly what it was, we thought at first maybe a flat spot on the tires, but the car developed a bad vibration in the middle part of the race” said Kennington.

The Castrol Team made their scheduled pit stop for fuel and tires and hoped to put the difficulties behind them. Unfortunately that wasn’t the case. “It didn’t really improve for a while and I was just hanging on during the middle part of the race” said the driver who fell out of the top-ten but stayed on the lead lap.

Fortunately for the Castrol Dodge team the problems began to subside in the latter stages of the race. “It’s kind of funny how it happened but the car definitely got better again later in the race and I was able to gain some spots” said Kennington who fought back and climbed into the top five.

Good fortune continued for the Castrol Dodge team as a last lap incident collected two of the front runners and allowed Kennington to leap ahead and score a third place finish. “It was a pretty strange night out there” he concluded. “We were good early, not so great in the middle and better at the end. I’m pretty happy winding up on the podium for all the people that support us. We couldn’t do any of this without Castrol and Dodge and everybody else who helps us out. My dad built a great motor that was strong all night”.

After nine races DJ Kennington and the Castrol Dodge Team sit third in the overall championship standings.

The NASCAR Canadian Tire series resumes action this coming Saturday night at Barrie Speedway. The twelve race NCATS schedule features events from coast to coast in Canada including stops at the best ovals in the Country along with temporary street circuits in Edmonton and Trois Rivieres. NCATS: BEST FINISH OF THE YEAR FOR BRAD GRAHAM & FULL THROTTLE TEAM

In a season that has challenged the resolve of Brad Graham and the Full Throttle /Challenger Motor Freight/Logel’s Auto Parts team their efforts were rewarded during round nine of the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series posting a top-five finish at Cayuga Speedway.

For much of the racing season the Full Throttle team has worked hard to learn the intricacies of their new Hess built race car. It has taken time for the crew to understand how the adjustments made impact the handling and performance of the car but now feel they are on their way.

The Full Throttle team and driver Brad Graham worked diligently during practice to prepare the car but came away with a disappointing qualifying time placing them fifteenth on the starting grid. “I was expecting it to be a long night” said Graham afterwards “but things sure worked out for us in this one”.

Graham maneuvered the Full Throttle Dodge around the 5/8 mile oval and began moving through the field. The driving was aggressive right from the start of the 200 lap main event and quickly turned into a battle of survival. “It was pretty aggressive in the first race of the season here and this one was no different” said Graham afterwards. The cooler evening conditions suited the car and Brad quickly moved the Full Throttle Dodge into the top-ten.

A little before the midway point of the race the Full Throttle team made their scheduled pit stop for fuel and new right side tires and team performed flawlessly returning Graham to the race in the top-ten. “The car was really good with those new tires and just got better, I was faster than some of the cars but when I tried to pass it got a little physical. So I just tried to take my time and pretty soon we were running third.

The physical type of racing continued as the two cars ahead of the Full Throttle Dodge made contact, Graham checked up to avoid the incident and was punted from behind. “After that spin the car we made a pit stop but obviously wasn’t quite as good”. Graham though would return to the battle after service and again move up through the field.

The aggressive driving continued until the very end of the race with two top-runners collected in a last lap incident. Graham avoided the dust up and despite the less than perfect handling car Brad would bring the Full Throttle Dodge to the finish line in fifth position. “To come away with a fifth place in this race obviously we’re pretty pleased” said the driver afterwards. “We’ve made some progress with the car and with all the banging that went on to grab a top-five is great, it gives us a boost for next week”.

Brad Graham and the Full Throttle/Challenger Motor Freight/Logel’s Auto Parts Team are back in action this coming weekend as the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series returns to Barrie Speedway on Saturday September 8th. For more information about the series log onto www.nascar.ca and for more news information about the team go to www.bradgraham.ca All 12 races this season will also be broadcast on TSN.

NCATS: THOMSON SCORES POLE IN HOME HARDWARE CHEVROLET, NIGHT ENDS EARLY

Don Thomson Jr. and the Home Hardware Chevrolet team returned to Ontario to begin the final third of the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series (NCATS) season at a track they claimed victory at earlier in the year, Cayuga Speedway. While Thomson was fast during practice and scored his second Bud Pole Award of the season, his race was cut short due to contact from behind.

Already twice a winner this season Thomson and the Home Hardware Chevy team were intent on continuing their strong season that had them second in the overall championship, but weren’t content to just sit back and use follow what they did during the first race of the season at Cayuga Speedway. “You know me, I’m always trying little things to get better” said Thomson. Those subtle differences put the Home Hardware Chevy on pole for the 200 lap main event with a scorching qualifying lap of 20.864 seconds. Thomson would be joined on the front row for the second time this season by teammate J.R. Fitzpatrick.

Race strategy for the Home Hardware Chevy when starting up front is typically, lead a lap early and then begin to settle in and make sure the car is solid for the entire race. As the green flag waved to begin competition Thomson claimed the bonus points for leading a lap and after only a few laps began to feel pressure from the 02 car. After completing only seven laps of the 200 scheduled Thomson was punted from behind, sending his Home Hardware Chevrolet spinning and crashing hard into the wall on the backstretch. “I don’t get it” he shrugged afterwards. “You know me, if you want go that badly so early in the race I’ll let you go, there’s no need for that. We got punted from behind by the 02 car and I don’t know what else to say, our night was finished. The team did a great job getting the Home Hardware Chevy ready for this race, we qualified up front and our night is finished almost before it starts, it’s a shame”.

The competitor that hit Thomson’s Home Hardware car from behind was penalized by NASCAR officials for overly aggressive driving, however the damage was done. Despite the efforts by the team the car was bent and twisted both front and back, too severely damaged to continue.

Don Thomson Jr. and the Home Hardware team are fifth in the championship point standings after nine events.

The Home Hardware team will be back in action this coming weekend as the series makes its second stop of the year at Barrie Speedway on Saturday September 8th. The NCATS run a twelve event schedule on ovals, road courses and temporary street circuits across Canada. You can watch all twelve races this season on TSN. NCATS: J.R FITZPATRICK STARTS MILWAUKEE ELECTRIC TOOLS CHEVY ON FRONT ROW

John Ryan (J.R.) Fitzpatrick and the Milwaukee Electric Tools Chevrolet team began the final third of the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series season at Cayuga Speedway this past Saturday. As usual J.R. had a fast race car and was looking to make some headway in the overall points standings. Sadly in what is becoming the norm the actions of others severely impacted the finishing position of the team.

The Milwaukee Electric Tools car showed great speed during the early practice sessions but J.R. did not have the same comfortable car during second practice. “The rubber from some of the cars in the other racing series was really causing us some problems” he stated. The team however made the necessary adjustments and gave Fitzpatrick the handling and speed he was seeking. J.R. would post the second fastest time during qualifying and join his teammate Don Thomson Jr. on the front row for the 200 lap race.

As the race began the two teammates raced hard but gave each other room to each lead a lap and gain bonus points. Fitzpatrick looked to settle into a solid early race pace and let more aggressive drivers through so as not to cause problems. “It makes no sense to run that hard early” he concluded. Despite his best intentions trouble would once again fin the Milwaukee Electric Tools Chevy. Contact with Fitzpatrick’s teammate initiated by the 02 car would cause a huge pile up on the backstretch collecting several cars including the Milwaukee Electric Tools Chevrolet.

Due to the severity of the collision the race would be red flagged for several minutes to clear the cars and debris. “I just can’t believe it; this is the third time we’ve been collected by somebody else. One second I’m coming out of turn two hard on the gas, and in the next moment my teammate is coming toward me, two good race cars got wrecked by this and it’s totally unnecessary”.

The Milwaukee Electric Tools team went to work immediately to try and make repairs to allow Fitzpatrick to get back into the race. The team would get J.R. back into the competition and the car was surprisingly quick. “If the car was that fast, being bent up, it would have been incredible in peak shape, we definitely would have had a car to win. I just don’t understand how you drive like that early in the race, when we got back in after making the repairs we still weren’t at halfway”.

After nine events J.R. Fitzpatrick and the Milwaukee Electric Tools team are now sixth in the overall point standings.

J.R Fitzpatrick and the Milwaukee Electric Tools team are back in action this Saturday evening at Barrie Speedway. More information on the series can be obtained by visiting www.nascar.ca All twelve races will also be shown on TSN.

NCATS: TEAM MOPAR DAY SURVIVES ROUGH RACE AT CAYUGA

The Mopar Parts Dodge team has fought tooth and nail through the middle portion of the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series season to regain their expected level of performance. Persistence by Ron Beauchamp Jr. and company was rewarded in a battle of survival at Cayuga Speedway this past Saturday.

A sense of improvement for the team began with qualifying and Beauchamp was able to post the 9th quickest time in the Mopar Parts Dodge. “The car was feeling better than it has and I knew we’d be able to run well in the evening conditions” said the driver afterwards.

There was plenty of action early in the 200 lap main event at the 5/8 mile oval with a spectacular multi vehicle collision in the first few laps. “I saw it happening and just went inside across the grass to avoid it” said Beauchamp. The Mopar Parts car would escape with only some body damage to the right front fender but it would severely impact the team’s fortunes.

When the racing resumes Ron Jr. and the Mopar Parts Dodge were clicking off one consistent lap after another and running solidly in the top-ten. All seemed on track until a ruling by NASCAR officials changed the tone of their race. “I didn’t like it” said Beauchamp, they were worried about the body work on the right front fender and black flagged us to stop and check it out, it was fine, but it changed our whole race”.

Despite the setback Team Mopar dug in and continued to compete hard for the rest of the race. Pit stops were solid and as expected the car was strong for the entire event. “At the end of the race we were running faster than most of the lead cars” said an excited Ron Beauchamp Jr. afterwards. “We finished this one and that’s a start, I think we’ve taken a big step forward”. The Mopar Parts Dodge would finish the race 14th.

A series of mechanical misfortune, racing incidents and just plain tough luck have caused the Mopar Parts team to underachieve through the last several events but being able to survive a race that was full of aggressive driving like Cayuga can give a team a boost. “We’re definitely feeling improvement” said Beauchamp afterwards. “We had a tough break with the right front fender call, but without that, we’re running up front, we’re as fast as the top cars and we’re in the mix. I’m really excited to get going next weekend”.

The NASCAR Canadian Tire Series will be back in action next weekend as teams head to Barrie Speedway on Saturday September 8th. The 12 race schedule will take the teams from coast to coast and will consist of ovals, road courses and temporary street circuits. For the complete schedule, results and other information log onto www.nascar.ca You will also be able to watch all twelve races this season on TSN.

NCATS PHOTO GALLERY: Cayuga... by Dave Franks

Another NCATS race, another last-lap battle that ends up with one car on top of another. The gallery also includes photos from the Ontario Sportsman Series season finale.

Thanks to Dave Franks for sharing these photos from Saturday's event at Cayuga Speedway Park.

NCATS: LYNCH TAKES OPPORTUNITY AND WINS SUBWAY 300

(Another wild finish. Track owner Jerry Santucci estimated 5,300 (incl. VIPs) for the race. The stands looked full, as was the campground. And with another wild NCATS finish, you can bet they'll be back. I'll post a photo gallery shortly. - GM)

*******

NELLES CORNERS, Ontario (Sept. 1, 2007) – Derek Lynch (No. 77 Allied Steel Buildings/Canadian Shield Dodge) played the role of opportunist to win the Subway 200 presented by Sicard Holiday Campers at Cayuga Speedway Park.

Peter Gibbons (No. 1 Canadian Tire/Master Craft Chevrolet) and Jim Lapcevich (No. 25 EMCEA Transport/Tim Hortons Chevrolet) exchanged the lead five times in the final 37 laps, but on the final turn of the final lap the two locked bumpers sending both cars spinning out of contention. Lynch was more than happy to fill the void and pick up his first NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Sirius Satellite Radio victory. He was able to outdistance runner-up Andrew Ranger (No. 27 Wal-Mart/Tide Ford) to the finish line by just over a half second.

Last lap passes for the win are some of the most exciting in racing and the Canadian Tire Series has made it routine. Five of the last six races have been determined on final lap lead exchanges.
“Gibbons and Jim (Lapcevich) were going at each other pretty hard there for a long time,” said the victorious Lynch. “I wasn’t going to stick my nose in there. I had a top five car and I wanted to bring it home that way.”

Lynch, out of Warkworth, Ontario, was racing under the colors of a new sponsor – Allied Steel Buildings – and he was happy to bring them on board with a win.

“It really could not have worked out better,” Lynch said. “It’s the perfect ending for their first race. The car looked great, but more importantly it drove great. It hasn’t been our best season, but this gives us some great momentum for the last three races.”

Polesitter Don Thomson Jr. (No.4 Home Hardware Chevrolet) had his sights set on taking both ends of the Cayuga doubleheader in 2007 after having won the May race, but that bid was foiled on just the eighth lap. As the field was heading into turn three, Kerry Micks (No. 02 Beyond Digital Imaging Ford) made contact with Thomson which sparked a multi-car accident. Involved in the accident beyond Thomson was his Fitzpatrick Motorsports teammate J.R. Fitzpatrick (No. 84 Milwaukee Electric Tools Chevrolet) and Doug Brown (No. 10 Haldex/NAPA Dodge). All three cars were knocked from contention. Only Fitzpatrick was able to make repairs and re-enter the race despite being 85 laps down.

With Thomson and Fitzpatrick sitting second and third, respectively, in the championship point standings, the beneficiary of the accident was Ranger. As the current points leader, Ranger found himself in the second position on the track after the smoke cleared.

Ranger took the ball and ran with it by wrestling the race lead away from D.J. Kennington (No. 17 Castrol/Krispy Kreme Dodge) on lap 35. He did not surrender that lead until he headed to pit road for service on lap 130 along with most of the other leaders.

The changes made to the Ranger machine by the Jacombs Racing team did not have the desired effect. The car did not seem as strong once the green flag racing resumed.

“No, the car did not like the changes at all,” stated Ranger. “But second place is a great finish for us here.”

The pit stops shuffled the field, but Gibbons, who was running second to Ranger prior to the stops, quickly worked his way through the pack and assumed the race lead on lap 138. He went on to lead 41 of the final 62 laps of the race. However the final lap incident with Jim Lapcevich relegated him to a seventh-place finish.

Kennington started the race in the third position and stayed among the leader all evening and collected the third-place trophy and snapped a brief two-race slump.

Micks rebounded from the early race incident to finish fourth – his fourth consecutive top-five finish. Brad Graham (No. 19 Full Throttle Energy Drink/Challenger Freight Dodge) earned his first top five of the season with his fifth-place effort.

Jeff Lapcevich, Gibbons, Jim Lapcevich, Jason Hathaway and Randy MacDonald rounded out the top 10. The race was slowed six times for 40 laps. The lead changed hands 14 times with 10 different drivers out in front.

In the unofficial championship point standings, Ranger’s second-place finish certainly didn’t hurt, but his case was further aided by the suffering of Thomson and Fitzpatrick. Ranger stretched his lead from 91 points coming into the race to 112. Micks and Kennington now share the second spot, but Micks gets the nod due to his two victories compared to Kennington’s one. Thomson and Fitzpatrick dropped to fifth and sixth, respectively.
