Carl Spiering back with Eaton (Canadian Operations) for 2008 Ultimate Power Trip VII

BURLINGTON, ONTARIO (January 18, 2008) - Eaton Corporation's electrical business (Canadian Operations) has announced it will provide the primary sponsorship of drag racing veteran Carl Spiering for the seventh consecutive year.

"Eaton has been instrumental to our successful high-profile professional racing program," said Carl Spiering.  "A winning marketing strategy has been established by Eaton that when combined with drag racing, provides a high level of entertainment for its customers, staff and distributor partners," he went on to say.  "When you partner our racing with extensive marketing and public relations activities designed to promote the Cutler-Hammer and Powerware brands, it results in a powerful branding effort by Eaton."

The 2008 strategy for the Eaton Cutler-Hammer Team is for early-season testing at South Georgia Motorsports Park in Valdosta, Ga., during the weekend of March 6 – 8. The team's goals this season are to break the elusive six-second barrier, to win events, and to keep the Eaton Cutler-Hammer Racing Team at the forefront for its sponsors, its fans, and the media.

"Our team has always qualified well, and in 2007 had two final round appearances at International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) Series events," added Spiering. "While we had several very low six-second runs last season, one of our highlights was a personal career best quarter-mile run of 6.00-seconds at 237.63 mph in front of 1,000 Eaton VIP's at the IHRA Canadian Nationals in Cayuga, Ontario."

"Once again, we are excited to be involved with Carl and his team," stated Paul Tlustos, Marketing Communications Manager, Eaton's electrical business (Canada). "Carl and his team's performance, both on and off the track have been very rewarding for Eaton, and we are pleased to be back supporting them for another new season."

The 43-year old Spiering will be driving a new Tim McAmis Race Cars manufactured 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray powered by an ERD (Engine Research & Development) 526-cubic inch Supercharged Hemi, built and maintained at the ERD facility in Jordan Station, Ontario, Canada.

"The team and I are extremely grateful for the support of the Eaton Corporation," said Spiering.  "Eaton makes all this possible, and we'll be doing our best."

"We really enjoy traveling and representing Eaton and its customers loyal to the Cutler-Hammer and Powerware brands," he went on. "Our interaction with Eaton industry guests during the racing program is something we all get a real charge out of. "These events seem to get bigger and better and the guests turn into instant fans which is inspiring for us."

The Carl Spiering Motorsports Team, www.carlspiering.com plans include appearances at selected International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) events in Torco's CompetitionPlus.com Pro Modified category, National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) events in the AMS Pro Modified Challenge Series, and Pro Modified Racing Association (PMRA) events and venues, which will serve the marketing needs of Eaton's electrical business.

Carl Spiering Motorsports would like to thank sanctioning bodies, participating tracks, the volunteers, the fans and customers of Cutler-Hammer and Powerware brand products for their continued support along with his associate sponsors: (ATC) Aluminum Trailer Co., Competition Tire Canada - Goodyear Racing Tires, ERD (Engine Research & Development), Excel Tool & Die, Tim McAmis Race Cars, NGK Spark Plugs, Pennzoil®, PSI Superchargers, Bicknell Racing Products (BRP), The Trailer Shop, VP Racing Fuels, Aeroquip Performance Products, G-Force Race Cars Inc., Cynergy Composites, Scott Jahren Paint and JET Equipment and Tools Ltd.

Online petition to find a replacement for Calgary's Race City Motorsport Park

The online petition is located here.

A Calgary Sun article (from Jan. 14) on this topic can be found here (h/t to ITMN Facebook Group member Shawn Bishop for the heads up).

A forum discussion about this issue is happening here.

The text of the petition to the City of Calgary Aldermanic Office:

Re: Race City Motorsport Park
We are writing in support of your initiative to find a new location for Race City Motorsport Park. There is an overwhelming majority of motorsport enthusiasts in this city who are law abiding responsible citizens who seek to continue enjoying their sport at a proper facility in a safe and legal manner.
With the recent media attention given to street “racing” and the enactment of several laws to discourage it, the availability of proper racing facilities can only make the streets safer for all. In addition to providing a safe and legal place for people to race, the industry is a major source of revenue for many businesses operating in Calgary.
The City of Calgary should make it a priority to see that facilities are made available for motorsport racing events. These types of events can be a large source of tourism income as well as another one of the many things Calgary has to offer to people. Following is a petition of people who are interested in supporting the initiative to find a new location for the operation of a racing facility in Calgary.
Sincerely,
The Undersigned

NASCAR ponders raising minimum age for Cup drivers

According to Charlotte Observer report (which is referenced on TSN), NASCAR is considering raising the minimum driver age for its elite Sprint Cup division from 18 to 21. Racers in that age group would still be allowed to race in the Nationwide (formerly Busch) and Craftsman Truck divisions.

Do you think this is a good idea?

In recent years, the Nationwide Series has turned into little more than an R&D / practice class for Cup stars. Would this change give the Nationwide division a new focus as a series for future Cup stars?

Finally, any suggestions on what to call Cup drivers who dominate races in NASCAR's 'second' division? Nationwide-whacking doesn't quite have the same ring to it.

A1GP Team Canada: Wickens tops rookie session in New Zealand

Taupo, New Zealand (January 18, 2008) - A1 Team Canada's Robert Wickens continued to make a name for himself in the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport as the Toronto teen dominated Round 5's 'Rookie-Only' practice session on Friday morning at New Zealand's Taupo Motorsports Park.

Wickens, turning his first career laps at the stunning 3.5km facility, blitzed the field of rookie drivers setting a lap of 1m17.070s, almost two tenths clear of second-placed John Martin debuting for A1 Team Australia.  Canada maintained its front-running pace in the afternoon's hour-long official practice, Robert setting the seventh fastest lap time from the 22 competing nations.

With 21 laps under his belt from the morning's rookie session Wickens headed into the afternoon's practice armed with track knowledge and some set-up adjustments to try out ahead of tomorrow afternoon's qualifying runs.  Logging 18 more tours, his fastest lap, a 1m16.065s, was just half a second off of A1 Team France's timesheet topping 1m15.545s, set courtesy of veteran Loic Duval.

"We definitely improved the car today," said Wickens after Friday's Taupo sessions.  "We made a few changes from the rookie session that didn't quite work so when we started this afternoon on the new tires the car wasn't up to go P1again.  As the session went on we really progressed and I set our best lap towards the end of the day which I'm really pleased about considering the tires were worn."

Robbie continued, "The team did a great job, we're going to work on the car and hopefully get some good qualifying spots for Sunday's Sprint and Feature races.  You don't get a break at this track, it's extremely physical but the grip levels are phenomenal.  I'd heard that there wasn't too much grip here last year but whatever they've done, there's a ton of it now!  It's going to be a physical race so whoever's been to the gym will make it to the end!"

Team Manager Simon Cayzer reflected on a solid opening day down-under.  "We're at the right end of the grid," he commented.  "We tried a few things, some worked and some didn't but we know the direction we have to take.  We're reasonably happy with our qualifying set-up and there's a bit more work to do on the race set-up.  In Zhuhai we were P2 but we didn't deliver in qualifying, there are no points for the rookie session and last time we ended the weekend with no points.  I'll be happy with a decent score come Sunday evening."

ADRL Appoints Ian Tocher New VP of Communications

(Note: Prior to moving to Atlanta (from Toronto) Ian Tocher was the first-ever Assistant Editor of Inside Track Motorsport News, back in 1997 (after we all quit PRN). Congratulations and good luck to Ian on his new appointment! ... g.m.)

O'FALLON, MO (Jan. 15, 2008) The Flowmaster American Drag Racing League (ADRL) presented by the National Guard today announced today that Ian Tocher has been named its new vice president of communications.

"Over the past several years I've watched the ADRL explode in popularity," Tocher said. "I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to join a team that shares not only my passion for drag racing, but also sees a real need to deliver drag racing to a younger and more diverse audience."

Tocher will work closely with ADRL President Kenny Nowling and his staff to maximize the O'Fallon, Mo-based sanctioning body's profile in print, radio, television and online media outlets. He also will facilitate the needs of media representatives at each of the series' nine scheduled national events this year, continue as editor of Adrenaline, the ADRL's in-house magazine, and spearhead an effort to improve and maintain the company's official Web site, www.ADRL.us.

"As the ADRL continues to grow at such a rapid rate, bringing on additional staff is only natural," Nowling explained. "Ian has played a significant role in the growth of the ADRL over the past few years as a reporter for Drag Racing Online and as the editor of Adrenaline. He brings not only an immense amount of talent and experience, but perhaps more importantly he has the passion, commitment and family values that I'm always looking for when considering bringing in a new member of our team."

Among the new features planned for www.ADRL.us is Agent 660 Notes, an insider column dedicated to providing scoops, rumors and daily coverage of the ADRL and the stars that compete in its four professional categories: Pro Extreme Motorcycle, Extreme 10.5, Pro Nitrous, and the quickest doorslammer class in all of drag racing, Pro Extreme.

"Most people in drag racing know me from my work at DragRacingOnline.com (DRO), where its Agent 1320 Notes is a daily, must-read destination for everyone involved in the sport," Tocher explained. "With DRO's blessing, we've recruited Agent 660 with an identity that reflects the ADRL's racing stage660 feetbetter known as an eighth of a mile."

An award-winning motorsports writer and photographer, Tocher holds a Bachelor's degree from the University of Toronto and graduated with honors and a Journalism degree from Centennial College, also in Toronto. After interning at Performance Racing News, in 1997 he became an assistant editor for Inside Track Motorsports News in Toronto. Tocher moved south to Atlanta later that year with his wife, Susan, where for the next six years he was editor of Airline Pilot Careers, a trade magazine for professional pilots. He joined Drag Racing Online as a freelancer in 2000 and wrapped up at DRO as a senior editor.

Tocher will continue to live in Atlanta with his wife and four-year-old son, Robert. He can be reached via e-mail sent to Ian@adrl.us.

CALGARY HERALD: Race City Speedway to become a garbage dump?

City to help relocate speedway

Calgary Herald // Tuesday, January 15, 2008

The City of Calgary will work with Race City Speedway to find another location before 2010 when its lease expires on municipally owned land.
Ald. Ric McIver, whose ward includes the auto racetrack, asked city officials Monday to consult with the owners. Bureaucrats said the lease on the site in southeast Calgary expires in 2010, because the land is needed for a garbage dump. As a result, McIver said the city should help the owners find another site.
"It's a private business, but they are being kicked off of city land," he said. "If they are going to be out of their current site after 2010, the time to start looking for a new site for them is now.
"I'm thinking specifically of places along the boundaries of the city."
McIver said the track is a major tourism draw for Calgary and can only get better with the help of the city.
"The owners are interested in investing some money and building a new track," he said. "So if we can bring NASCAR or one of their junior affiliates to Calgary on a regular basis, it's just one other thing that puts the City of Calgary on the map."
Race City Speedway, located in southeast Calgary, currently has three racetracks.

Brockville Ontario Speedway cancels 'Hangover Enduro'
BROCKVILLE, ON - The lack of frost in the ground now, combined with the recent reconfiguration of the quarter-mile at Brockville Ontario Speedway have resulted in the cancellation of the annual Hangover Enduro for this year.

The event was originally scheduled to take place on New Year's Day. Track conditions that had cars sinking into the racing surface put the kibosh on that idea for January 1st. February 3rd was the replacement date on the schedule, however a recent streak of warm weather and the continued settling of the new track surface at the BOS has prompted officials to pull the plug on the event for 2008. Fans can now look forward to May and the start of the regular racing season with many special events planned in a jam packed schedule which will be released in the near future. (From the BOS)

PMRA DRAGS: Janzen returns
ST. CATHARINES, ON - Kasey Janzen is returning to the driver’s seat. The veteran racer and founding Pro Modified Racing Association (PMRA) member will get behind the wheel of the KC Motorsports Lumina in 2008.

For 2007, Janzen had fellow PMRA driver Joe Lilienthal of Kenmore, New York drive his car. “This year will about the same as last year,” said the 2006 PMRA co-champion. “Except I’m going to drive.” And other that some engine work, Janzen stated the car and team will be pretty much as last year. Craig Masterson will continue as the team’s crew chief.

St. Thomas Dragway responds to leaded fuel ban
Following up on the situation regarding the continued use of leaded fuel in racing vehicles in Canada, Dave Mathers (owner of St. Thomas Dragway) issued the following press release:

"Environment Canada on December 24, 2007 issued a bulletin under Gasoline Regulations announcing a proposal that the exemption for the use of leaded racing fuel will be dropped at the end of the 2008 season. The ramifications of this decision are dramatic, draconian and catastrophic. Race cars that require leaded racing fuel to operate will be unable to compete.

Older (1974 and older) high performance cars will not be able to operate as their design necessitates leaded fuel for their valve trains. Professional drag racing as we know it today will not be able to continue in 2009. The three National Events that we currently enjoy will have to be dropped resulting in huge economic impacts to local businesses such as hotels and restaurants as well as to the facilities that have invested heavily to host these races.

In the last elections, both federal and provincial, politicians campaigned on platforms of reducing illegal street racing. Canada’s many drag strips allow for a safe and controlled environment to allow these potential street racers to operate. This decision will possibly force the closure of many of these facilities.

The airline industry has been granted a permanent exemption under these regulations thus allowing them to continue using leaded aviation fuel. The racing community uses approximately one percent of the amount of fuel that the airlines use. Almost every other country in the world allows the controlled use of leaded racing fuels. This proposal must be challenged by everyone as soon as possible. We urge everyone reading this to immediately contact their local Member of Parliament and their Member of the Provincial Legislature and express their concerns.

A1 TEAM CANADA: Hinchcliffe and Wickens Nominated by Inside Track

(Note: Thanks to Stuart Morrison for his efforts to promote Canadian racers and the Inside Track Readers' Choice Awards!.... g.m.)

Montréal, Canada (January 15, 2008) - In recognition of their sterling on-track efforts in 2007, A1 Team Canada racers James Hinchcliffe and Robert Wickens have found themselves nominated in the 'Canadian Road Racer of the Year' category in this year's Inside Track Readers' Choice Awards Presented by Castrol.

The annual poll, now in its sixth year, is hosted by Inside Track magazine, one of Canada's premier monthly motorsport publications, and voted for by its readers.  Boasting a variety of categories to showcase Canada's leading motorsport talents competing on four wheels and two, at home and abroad, the voting opened this week at www.insidetracknews.com and will remain open until Friday 14th March 2008.

Robert Wickens, who won the 'Up and Coming Road Racer of the Year' award in last year's voting, was nominated for this year's 'Canadian Road Racer of the Year' award based on his third place finish in the 2007 Champ Car Atlantic Championship.  The 18-year-old enjoyed an impressive rookie campaign scoring a maiden victory in Portland with three additional podiums and a pole position to his credit at season's end.  Wickens was subsequently awarded the 'BBS Rising Star' award for his performances.

The talented teen made his competitive A1GP debut last November and duly steered A1 Team Canada to a third place Sprint podium in Round 3 at the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia, Canada's highest placing to-date in the 2007-08 season.

James Hinchcliffe, also nominated in the 'Canadian Road Racer of the Year' category, scored a total of five podium finishes and three pole positions on his way to fourth overall in the 2007 Champ Car Atlantic Championship, his sophomore season in the series.  The highlight of his season came as he won the 'Gilles Villeneuve Award' at the end of season banquet, traditionally given to the driver who posses extraordinary ability, star quality and who has distinguished himself through sportsmanship, dedication and perseverance in the face of disappointment.

Hinchcliffe's performances for A1 Team Canada have been no less impressive, the 21-year-old scoring Canada's sole podium in the 2006-07 A1GP season courtesy of a second place Sprint podium in just his second start in the nation versus nation series.  His efforts last season, including seven top-ten finishes, helped Canada to an 11th place finish in the Nations Standings and he kicked off the 2007-08 A1GP season piloting the Canadian entry in The Netherlands and the Czech Republic.

Robert Wickens will once again lead Canada's A1GP charge as Round 5 of the 2007-08 season takes place this weekend at Taupo Motorsports Park in New Zealand, Friday 18th - Sunday 20th January.

Transcript of Interview with Dale Earnhardt Jr. at Daytona Int'l Speedway

Note: This is a LONG transcript

PRESEASON THUNDER TESTING // DAY TWO, SESSION TWO
JANUARY 15, 2008

DALE EARNHARDT, JR., No. 88 Mountain Dew AMP/National Guard Impala SS, met with members of the media in the Daytona International Speedway Media Center during day two of the second session of Preseason Thunder Testing and discussed how it would be to win the 50th anniversary of the Daytona 500, on the affect to a team and driver on winning the Daytona 500, testing success with new Hendrick Motorsports team, expectations of running the Impala SS full-time in '08, expectations for Daytona in the Impala SS and other topics. The transcript of the press conference follows:

An Interview With: DALE EARNHARDT, JR.

JOSH HAMILTON: Dale, if you can just start off and tell us how your first day and a half and gone testing with your new team.

DALE EARNHARDT, JR.: It's been great. We've had great speed in the car. We've had Casey's car from last year and a car that we built this year, and we're real happy with both of them, happy with the guys and their work ethic and their attitude, and it's went great, it really has. We've been pretty happy with the speeds and the things we've seen the car do and how it's reacted to the changes we've been trying, so it's been really fun.

JOSH HAMILTON: You have one Daytona 500 victory. This year is the 50th running of the great American race. Talk about what it would mean to win on the 50th anniversary.

DALE EARNHARDT, JR.: Yeah, just to get a win here any time, no matter what it is, whether it's a Shootout or 125s at the Daytona 500, it's a great feeling to go to victory lane at Daytona, and I really appreciate it every time it happens to me. It's going to be ‑‑ you know, it's going to be quite a spectacle with it being the 50th, so it'll be a pretty big deal. Whoever wins it will get a lot of fanfare and whatnot. I think it'll be great for our team, great for our season to start off like that, and I'm sure we want to win as bad as anybody right now.

Hopefully we're preparing well, and I think we are. I think the cars are ‑‑ I haven't drafted yet, so I can't really comment. I don't really know how it's going to be, but I assume it'll be all right, probably about like it used to be.

If my car drives around the track and handles the same, characteristics are the same as far as how the car goes around the racetrack it feels like to me, but I heard some things from last week's test that I should be aware of and whatnot, so I don't know, might be a little bit more of a handful than we're used to. But the characteristics of the cars ‑‑ the problems and issues the guys were having last week were sort of the same old problems, just a little worse, so we'll just have to see over the next day and a half.

Q. Can you talk about your frame of mind and the only contract you're worried about now is when Whiskey River is going to be done as opposed to what you faced coming into last year?

DALE EARNHARDT, JR.: Yeah, it's been pretty nice to be able to concentrate on the things that are important right now and testing and working and getting to know the guys. It's definitely ‑‑ there's a little bit less pressure in certain areas and more pressure in other areas. I didn't have to worry about job security when I was over at my other job, but I've got to worry about that now.

I think if I do what I've been doing, I should be fine. But with being the son of the guy who built the place, you can get away with a few more things than most guys could.

You know, I've got a really good owner that makes me feel comfortable, and so that eases a lot of other pressures, talking to him and hearing from him and listening to his thoughts on what we're doing. It takes away some pressure from that side of it.

But I don't know the guys that well, so I'm just nervous in getting to know them and hoping that they like me and like the kind of driver I am and they're happy that they have me as their driver. That's what you want from the guys working on your cars is for them to be glad you're there and that you're the one that's driving it.

So it's kind of neat. It's really fun to be going through this for me, and I'm enjoying those parts, and even the difficult things or the challenging parts are fun because of the atmosphere and because of the attitude that everybody there has. Everybody at Hendrick is really pumped up and giving me a good vote of confidence going into the test and going into the season, so it really makes it exciting to face all the challenges we're going to face.

Q. The TV ratings have gone down the last couple seasons, and at the same time, maybe not coincidentally, you haven't had a lot of success on the track. Now that it looks like you might be getting into top form again and have a chance to win races again, do you think that will bring some fans back in and that maybe your fans are more traditional fans that maybe have been tuning out?

DALE EARNHARDT, JR.: I don't know. We should probably have some on‑line polls or something to figure that out. Those seem to work pretty good.

I can't tell you whether that's why the television ratings are down. It would be nice to think you had that kind of influence, but at the same time, I don't want to be the downfall or the reason for it. If I can get back into victory lane I know my fans will be excited about that, and if they're not tuning in they'll be turning up personally to see it.

Any time I run a Busch race I know my fans get excited about it and they might buy a ticket to see it on Saturday or they might set up a camper outside the racetrack regardless, whereas if we had been in the field ‑‑ it's just hard to say. I know those comments were made by Brian and taken out of context a little bit, but he referred to it ‑‑ them two things happening at the same time maybe did have something to do with each other. But it's not ‑‑ I don't feel comfortable really taking any credit one way or the other.

Q. You used to be the restrictor plate king, now it seems it's shifted over to Hendrick. Do you think this Daytona 500 is the best chance of your career to capture this second victory?

DALE EARNHARDT, JR.: It's hard to say. I haven't drafted with my car yet, but I know it's going to be pretty good, I'm pretty sure. I'll have a great shot. You know, I think I had some pretty good cars down here in the past, and it's hard to say ‑‑ hard to really rank them as to which was better than the other. We had some pretty good cars.

The Daytona 500 is ‑‑ that race, so many things happen in that race. It's like a little mini‑series. It reminds me a lot of a season in itself because of the ‑‑ there's so many ups and downs and you still can find yourself with a shot to win, and if you look back at several things that happened to you during the event, you can't imagine that all that would happen in one race. But it does.

It's a special race, and it carries a lot of weight with me and how I feel about the event. I feel very strong about it and very dedicated to it and very dedicated to winning it every time I show up. I think I've got a great shot and I think I know what I need to do to get the job done.

If I have a car that's merely capable, I think I should have a shot to win every time I show up.

Q. I know you've been in Cup obviously a long time and racing at Daytona a long time, but I'm wondering if it has you feeling any more jitters than normal, or you sort of alluded to a little pressure in some new ways. And if so, is it like any kind of feeling you can compare to any big steps or big leaps that you've taken in your life, whether that has to do with late models or Busch?

DALE EARNHARDT, JR.: The worst I ever was was trying to qualify for my first race in Charlotte. I was so scared and I wanted to get out of the car but it was too late. I already told them I'd drive it.

We were sitting right there at the ‑‑ we were like two minutes away from going out to qualify, and I just couldn't ‑‑ I was so nervous it was painful. It was painful to be that nervous. We ended up qualifying Top 10, and there were other times where I was as nervous or close to that.

Nowadays ‑‑ I've been doing this for a while, like you said, and I sort of understand what's around the next corner. When we made this decision I knew what to expect and what it would be like coming back to Daytona and what it would be like coming back to ‑‑ facing the fans, the press and the NASCAR community, and I knew what the expectations would be.

So I guess that sort of prepares you mentally to be able to deal with it one way or another because you've got to focus on driving and trying to do right by your team, and if they see that people's expectations are affecting your ability to make decisions on the racetrack, then you're not a good race car driver.

When I was a rookie and I was scared to go out and qualify for my first race, my fear and my nervousness was affecting my ability to go out there and run good, and somehow or another, we still did okay. But as you get ‑‑ as things happen to you in life that prioritize everything for you, you know, you go through ‑‑ you have like some real bad things happen to you and some really, really good things happen to you over the course of seven or eight years and that prioritizes everything in your life.

Right now I'm pretty much set on what I know I need to do. Although this is a high‑profile race team and I'm a high‑profile driver, I can handle it. With how I've grown up in the sport, I think I'm as prepared as anybody could be for this certain situation.

Q. Certainly there are people that have chased Hendrick here for a little bit. You've been in that role and now are inside the fences there at Hendrick. From your experience and just from what you're seeing now, what do you see that is so different or what's kind of opened your eyes about being at Hendrick that maybe you kind of wondered about when you were chasing them?

DALE EARNHARDT, JR.: It's hard to say what I see that's different. They have more stuff as far as if it's a CNC machine or whatever. They have more of everything. They're able to mass‑produce more, and they have the ability to cover all the bases easier with the amount of personnel and the talent in each individual. I see that.

Otherwise it's about the same. I mean, I really was proud of where I came from and proud of the team that I had last year, and it's hard for me to really put into words without ‑‑ I'd rather ‑‑ I choose really not to discuss it that often because I don't want anyone that I've worked with in the past to get the impression that I am in a much better place and much more happier and I've got better people, because it really just comes down to the tools and how you use them.

Now, Rick has built ‑‑ Rick's deal is bigger, like I said. He's got more stuff, and he's had a lot of the same employees for a long time. When I first started winning races and running good in the Cup Series, the one thing that I started to understand that I should worry about was loyalty, and I see that they have that there. They have a lot of loyalty and there's a lot of pride in being loyal and being dedicated to that team, and there's a lot of pride in people doing it for Rick. You work with people for years and years and you see where some people are ‑‑ some people concentrate and focus on how to improve their position and improve their ‑‑ whether it be their way or their title or whatever. I see a lot of people at Hendrick that sacrifice ‑‑ sort of the opposite; they sacrifice for the good of the company or for Rick or whatever makes that car go faster.

I know I'm just seeing things for the first time, but that's really the initial thing that popped up to me that I saw. You get to know things more and better and deeper and you start to understand it more, and I'm sure there will be more evident things that I didn't ‑‑ other tools or people or whatever that I didn't realize I had before or didn't use before or that wasn't around at DEI or whatever.

But it's hard to get real specific. DEI builds race cars just like Hendrick does. They build good race cars. I drove them. We won. We ran up front.

I just think you look at the track record that Hendrick has and they're doing something different and they're doing it better. It's hard to say really where it is other than just how large a program it is. They have 20‑some CNC machines cranking stuff out all the time, and DEI has nine. Or they had nine. I don't know how many they have now. That's an instance in maybe 150, 200 instances where that makes a difference when you add all that up. That's how Hendrick is so consistently dominant.

Q. I want to ask you, when you made this move you obviously anticipated your life changing to some degree. Now that you've been through it, what has changed? Is it busier? Are there more sponsors, more responsibilities, less time, and is maybe the greatest change a peace of mind?

DALE EARNHARDT, JR.: There is a peace of mind. I think one of the changes, like I said, has been not being the son of the boss anymore, going to somewhere ‑‑ me and Tony, Jr., both experienced sort of a little bit of a growth or maturity about just going from one door to the other overnight. You know, like I said, I got away ‑‑ I grew up over the years, but when I first started you could get away with saying things and get being quoted certain ways and be able to get away with it working for my daddy. I wouldn't be able ‑‑ my job now is to stay out of Rick's office as much as I can.

We have a great relationship, and he seems to ‑‑ I mean, he's known me for a long time like everybody else here, and I think everybody gets the kind of person I am. And I think he made the choice to hire me as much as I made the choice to go there, and I feel like it's going to work out and be fine. But it's sort of refreshing to not have that safety net, you know?

I've always talked about trying to get credibility and people to respect you and whatnot, and by putting yourself out on a limb here, it's definitely hopefully going to get me some of that, especially if we can perform and get the job done that everybody thinks we should get done, and I think we will.

Peace of mind, I think the peace of mind comes from probably the same thing, just knowing that I'm taking the risk and it took a lot of guts to do it, so I'm pretty proud of being able to just do it, just to do that. I could have popped out or went another direction, but I went in the best direction and I took the risk to put my career and my credibility on the line to work with a company that has won a lot of races. So that should ‑‑ hopefully if we win some races, it'll all work out.

Q. Fans are IM'ing, what did he wear today, did he get here early, did he get here late, is he smiling, not smiling, but one of the things that hasn't been addressed is Kyle Busch, whether people can compare you and him or if he does better or you do better early on and are you rivals, and can you sort of address that? Is that a story line that we might see? Is that fair?

DALE EARNHARDT, JR.: It's up to y'all what y'all write, but I told Rick ‑‑ when you were talking about what time I got up, I told him I don't like to stay at the hotels right next to the track because these race cars wake me up first thing in the morning. I thought that was funny.

But anyways, getting back to your question, I think that I've got a lot of respect for Kyle's ability, and it's been a little bit of a challenge to not let ‑‑ for me not to get under his skin and for him not to get under mine, I suppose, to end the season last year, especially after I wrecked him at Kansas.

But I think that we both understand we need to be successful where we're at, where he is and where I am, and that's what our priority should be, and getting to know our teammates and getting to work well and being an asset to the company.

Joe is an amazing man regardless of his involvement in motorsports, but I think Kyle, if he doesn't know that already, he'll understand that and realize how important that is that he does well and represents the company well and is an asset to Gibbs. And for me, too, it's probably the same thing.

Q. A lot of people talked about your relationship with Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson, but not much is talked about in your relationship with Casey Mears, and since you guys are going to be ‑‑ your cars are going to be built in the same shop, how is your relationship with him and how do you guys interact?

DALE EARNHARDT, JR.: Me and Casey, you know, I goof off with him because we've hung out before at the racetrack and we were pretty good buddies. You know, he drove for ‑‑ he drove with Jimmy who was married to my sister, so we became pretty good friends through that. I've known Jimmy for a longer period of time and I've known Jeff for even longer than that, but I've never really spent time around them away from the racetrack. I know how they are as race car drivers and what their work ethic is, and I think we'll be able to work together and be pretty happy that we're teammates.

But me and Casey will probably do more goofing off and take it ‑‑ I mean, he takes it pretty serious because he wants to do good. Me and him, we'll spend time together away from the racetrack where I might not do that so much with Jimmy and whatnot.

Q. A lot of people are already making predictions about how you'll do this year. Tony, Jr., said yesterday you'd win at least four. What are your expectations for the year, goals, and what would be a successful first season for you at Hendrick Motorsports?

DALE EARNHARDT, JR.: I just like running up front every week. I like going to the racetrack and being in the... being toward the top of the chart, at least on the left side of the page in practices and whatnot.

And in the race I like to run up front. We did that a lot last year, and when I look at ‑‑ when I take a look at all my seasons, I was better last year at showing up and being there every weekend. We weren't there every weekend, but I had a better car the majority of the season than I had had in seasons past.

That's really all I wanted out of driving race cars. I want to be up front and be toward the front and challenging, and when I show up to the racetrack I want people to expect me to run well, not just at particular tracks everywhere. It was good to go and to do that at some tracks last year that I typically hadn't been able to do that at.

I was hoping that with some of the extra ability that Hendrick has in winning championships and races on a regular basis that that could even improve my finishing. I don't want to sit here and guess how many races we'll win. We'll win some races, and I expect to win soon. I'm a good driver with a good team, and if we don't make mistakes on a Sunday we should have great finishes and win some races.

JOSH HAMILTON: Thanks a lot for your time, Dale.

Dario Franchitti: "I was ready to retire from open wheel racing."

Comments from former open wheel racers Dario Franchitti and Sam Hornish Jr. from NASCAR PreSeason Thunder at Daytona.
- with files from Dodge Motorsports / http://www.dodgemotorsportsmedia.com/ via Clear!Blue

DARIO FRANCHITTI (No. 40 Chip Ganassi Racing Dodge Charger) ON MOVING TO THE CUP SERIES "It wasn't one thing. It was a combination of factors. I was ready to retire from open wheel racing. I always ask myself the question, 'do I want to do this?' About half way through the IRL season I asked myself that question. And I wasn't sure I wanted to do this in '08.

"I was very interested in coming over to the NASCAR side. Chip and I talked about me doing it. He called me in August about this idea, to come drive for [him] next year. It was just good timing. "

ON HIS 2008 SCHEDULE "I'm going to drive some Nationwide races too, in the Fastenal car. Quite a few of those I think. It is going to be interesting to see how the new regulations work with the COT and the Nationwide car. I'm [also] doing the Rolex 24."

SAM HORNISH JR. (No. 77 Mobil 1 Dodge Charger) ON GETTING THE NO. 2'S POINTS "It's kind of a peace of mind going into the first five races knowing that you're going to get to race. It is difficult enough to be in the top 35 but if you miss the first race of the year it really puts you in a [tough spot]. Being able to go out and take it easy through the 150s and not have to put ourselves in too many bad positions. It gives you a little bit of an opportunity to get some race experience with the rest of the Cup drivers."

ON COMING TO NASCAR "It's really about the competition. When I first started talking to Penske back in 2002, one of the side questions was, is there going to be an opportunity to run stock cars? Having the opportunity to run one or the other has always interested me. I've always wanted to come to Daytona and race. I'm a huge race fan. I would watch any type of racing. [Moving to Cup] was the next thing. This is what was going to keep me motivated and push me. I feel that if I hadn't decided to do this, even though I'm only 28 years-old, I don't know how much longer I wanted to race. I needed a new challenge."

A1GP:Wickens Ready for Antipodean Challenge

MONTREAL, CANADA (January 14, 2008) - The 2007-08 A1GP World Cup of Motorsport season reaches the halfway marker in New Zealand this weekend with A1 Team Canada selecting Toronto's Robert Wickens to compete in Round 5 at Taupo Motorsports Park, Friday 18th - Sunday 20th January.

Wickens remains behind the wheel of the Canadian entry for the third straight event having made his competitive A1GP debut last November scoring Canada's only points to-date thanks to a third place podium finish in Round 3's Sprint race in Malaysia. Having confirmed his plans to compete in the European-based 2008 World Series by Renault in December, the 18-year-old A1GP rookie hopes to kick-start the New Year with another competitive showing for his country as he gets set for his debut competing at the stunning 3.5km Taupo Motorsports Park on New Zealand's North Island.

Impressive qualifying performances from Wickens, including a high of fifth place in Malaysia, have been tempered by frustrating Feature race outings with the Ontario-native posting early retirements in both Malaysia and China. Hoping that the third time will be a charm, Robert will no doubt be keen for a repeat of last season's Taupo form when James Hinchcliffe steered Canada to a pair of top-six finishes, the last time the team scored points in both the Sprint and Feature events at a race meeting.

On-track this weekend's event at Taupo breaks ground with all 22 competing nations running on biofuel. The use of the ethanol based E30 is the cornerstone of an ambitious series of initiatives to help reduce A1GP's environmental footprint and forms part of the series 'THINK Greener Racing' policy.

"I'm really excited to be racing in New Zealand," said Wickens ahead of his trip ''Down Under'. "We have to take advantage of running in the 'Rookie-Only' session to maximize our track time, I know the layout's been modified a little since the previous A1GP visit but we've proved we can get up to speed pretty quickly. The team's been working hard over the break and our aim will be to maintain the pace we've shown previously in the earlier part of the weekend through to Sunday when it matters most!"

Team Manager Simon Cayzer previewed the weekend by stating; "In China we started the weekend well but didn't get the chance to show our pace in the race. It's important for us to get a good result in Taupo and carry that momentum forward to the Australian round a fortnight later.

"We want to show our pace again and get some points. Biofuel will make fuel consumption a bit more interesting but it shouldn't affect performance. Realistically we're aiming for two podiums. Unfortunately one of our team members won't be with us this weekend and we'd just like to wish him all the best - Simon we want you back soon!"

Sunday's 20-minute Sprint race starts at 11am local time on Sunday (5pm EST Saturday 19th January) with the 70-minute Feature race starting at 3pm in New Zealand (9pm EST Saturday 19th January).

Live Feature streaming available via - www.a1gp.com

Setanta Sports Canada will broadcast Round 5 live starting at 8pm EST on Saturday 19th January and again on Monday 21st January as a tape-delay at 8am EST - www.setantanorthamerica.com

A1GP Top-Ten Nations Standings - Round 4/10: 1st Switzerland (79), 2nd France (60), 3rd New Zealand (59), 4th Great Britain (48), 5th South Africa (47), 6th Netherlands (41), 7th Ireland (39), 8th Germany (37), 9th China (28), 10th India (27), *13 CANADA (10)

How will this impact upon Canadian racing? Have your say.

The federal law concerning the use of leaded fuel in competition vehicles is up for amendment once again. The end result could be a total ban on January 9, 2009. The actual proposal is located here.

In reaction to this, a document arrived on my desk that has been circulated throughout the drag racing community. It starts:

"Racers, it seems the sky is truly falling. The Government of Canada is planning to implement a total and permanent ban on the use of leaded fuels for competition purposes, effective January 1st, 2009.
If this happens, professional Drag Racing in Canada is over. Immediately, completely and forever. This isn’t the same as the challenges we’ve faced in the past. This time, they’re dropping the ‘Big One’.
No Pro Mod, No Pro Stock, No Top Fuel or Nitro Funny Car and no American competitors in any of our sportsman classes. Only Alcohol Funny Cars would remain unscathed.
Although many Canadian sportsman competitors run their cars effectively on unleaded racing fuel or methanol, any of our competitors using leaded fuel have two choices. Change or quit...."

This issue has come up several times during the past decade. While we are in the process of researching how Canadian racing will be affected, we would like to hear from you how this change would impact your favourite form of Canadian motorsports and what should be done about it.

ACT: Cyr, Fisher Receive Top Honors at ACT Banquet of Champions

SOUTH BURLINGTON, VT – Stock car drivers Jean-Paul Cyr and Jamie Fisher were feted at the 2007 American-Canadian Tour (ACT) Banquet of Champions at the Sheraton-Burlington Hotel & Conference Center in South Burlington, VT on Saturday night. Cyr collected the seventh ACT Late Model Tour Championship of his career – his fifth in a row, an ACT record – while Fisher was given the prestigious Don MacTavish Award, ACT’s highest honor.

Cyr, of Milton, VT, strung together a remarkable record of consistency to capture the 2007 ACT Late Model Tour crown. He drove the #32 Ehler’s RV/Sticks & Stuff Chevrolet to five consecutive podium finishes to begin the 13-race season, and never finished a race in lower than 12th position. Cyr led a season-high six events in four U.S. states and Québec for a total of more than 230 laps. His car owner, Rick Paya, received a Champion’s check worth $10,000 for the efforts of his team. Cyr edged two other Milton, VT natives, Scott Payea and Brent Dragon, for the title. New Hampshire drivers Randy Potter and Roger Brown rounded out the top five. Completing the top ten drivers, in order, were Brian Hoar, Joey Polewarczyk, Jr., Donald Theetge, Ron Henry, and Jamie Fisher.

Fisher was presented the Don MacTavish Award by ACT Vice President Darla Hartt for his long-lasting contributions and profound dedication to stock car racing in the region. The Shelburne, VT native was the Track Champion at Thunder Road in Barre, VT in 2003, and is among the all-time leading race winners in the division. MacTavish, a New England native, was the 1966 National Sportsman Champion before tragically losing his life in February 1969. Past recipients of the Don MacTavish Award include NASCAR Founder Bill France, Sr. (1969), Thunder Road Founder Ken Squier (’72), ACT President Tom Curley (’81), drivers Robbie Crouch (’88), Cyr (’96), and Phil Scott (2005), and last year’s winner, ACT Director of Competition Dean Gallison.

The Ken Squier Award, which merits service to stock car racing fans and competitors, was presented for the 20th year, but for the first time was given to two individuals. Local television sports personalities Mike McGill of WCAX Channel 3 (CBS affiliate, Burlington, VT) and Jamie Scavotto of WPTZ NewsChannel 5 (NBC affiliate, Plattsburgh, NY) were recognized for their efforts in producing outstanding season-long coverage of local auto racing.

The Late Model Sportsmanship Award, as voted on by licensed ACT/Thunder Road drivers and officials, was given to Shawn Fleury of Middlesex, VT. Fleury was a part-time competitor with ACT while focusing on weekly events at Thunder Road. He finished 13th in point standings there with a top result of second place in July. Sophomore racer Mike Bailey of South Barre, VT was voted the Most Improved Driver for 2007. Bailey collected four top-five finishes at Thunder Road on his way to 8th place overall.

The ACT Late Model Tour will begin its 17th season of competition on Sunday, April 20 at Lee USA Speedway on the New Hampshire seacoast. For more information, call (802) 244-6963 or visit www.acttour.com.
