CASCAR: EMCO Taurus driver Kevin Dowler ready to chase sixth CASCAR Western Series championship

VERNON, BC – Kevin Dowler has a soft spot in his heart for Sun Valley Speedway. The Edmonton, AB racer won his record-extending fifth CASCAR Western Series championship at the Vernon, BC stock car oval last fall. And this coming weekend, the EMCO / Westlund Ford Taurus driver will return to Sun Valley to begin his quest for a sixth Western crown.

“We love racing at Sun Valley. I think we’re about seven for 10 in terms of feature wins in races we’ve participated in there,” said Dowler. “And the last time we were there, we collected our fifth CASCAR Western Series championship. So it’s safe to say that we feel good about heading there again.”

Looking at the season as a whole, Dowler intends to compete for a sixth Western Series championship before hanging up his helmet.

“This is my swan song. After the final race of the year, I’m going to cut the chinstraps out of my helmets. Or at least shorten them so that my kids can use them. We’re going to do our best to win our sixth championship and go out in style. But after this season, I’m going to do what I can to give my kids the same opportunities my father gave me. I love racing, but it’s getting to be their turn.”

In addition to being a racer, Dowler has been a driving force behind the growth of CASCAR in the west, and he’s heartened by what he sees this season.

“I feel really good about the CASCAR Western Series this year,” the EMCO Taurus driver continued. “With the new title sponsorship from Flo~Pro.com Performance Exhaust and the excitement of having a beautiful new track in Saskatoon, I think this is going to be a great year. And we’re hearing that there could be a great turnout of new and returning drivers for 2006, so adding new blood to the series is very encouraging.”

Before starting his final title quest, Dowler would like to recognize the support of his primary sponsor, EMCO Ltd., as well as the many associate sponsors that make his racing program possible – specifically Westlund, American Standard Heating & Air Conditioning, Burnham Boilers, Haydon and Performance Friction.

“We’re planning to do the Mosport road course race, the GP de Trois-Rivieres and hopefully the Montreal Champ Car weekend if that comes together in the next little while. We’re going to have Trevor Seibert in an Apollo car for those races. Trevor last raced for us in 2004 and the highlight was when we finished second and third at the Toronto Indy.”

Ohsweken Speedway Cancelled for May 19th

Ohsweken Speedway Cancelled for May 19th Unfortunately due to poor ground conditions the racing action slated for Friday May 19th, 2006 has been cancelled at Ohsweken Speedway.

Heavy rains throughout the week saturated the speedway grounds and in particular the pit area. Racing action will get underway next Friday night at 7:45pm sharp when Village Cafe Proudly Presents a regular card of action including DIRT Sportsman, Thunder Stocks and Mini Stocks.

No word has been given yet as to whether or not the Southern Ontario Sprints event scheduled for tonight will be re-scheduled or permanently cancelled.

RANSOMVILLE AND HUMBERSTONE PREPARING TO LAUNCH NEW LUCAS OIL SHOOTOUT SERIES EVENTS: DIRTTRACKDIGEST.COM TOURS TO VISIT FIVE TRACKS

Thorold, Ontario - Since the announcement of the new Lucas Oil Shootout presented by DirtTrackDigest.com, excitement has been building as each host track has opened their 2006 Seasons.

With the exception of Ohsweken Speedway that kicks off it's new season Friday May 19th, Ransomville, Genesee, Merrittville and Humberstone Speedways have all played host to some exciting early season action in the Sportsmen and 358 Modified Divisions.

"It's something all of our facilities need," relates Ransomville's Joel Friesen, adding, " with each series about to debut . will our race teams be able to keep up the pace . and for our fans . it should bring some real excitement to each track through the summer."

Ransomville Speedway will play host to the first Lucas Oil Shoot-out for the 358 Modified Division - Friday May 26th and what a start it has been at the Western New York facility.

In three Mighty Taco Feature Events - there has been three different winners. Boyd MacTavish topped the field in the season opener and since then Rich Vinson and Scott Kerwin have also made the trip to Victory Lane. MacTavish and Kerwin both scored their career firsts while for Vinson - it was his first Friday Night triumph since 2003.

At the Merrittville Speedway there has only been one L. St. Amand Enterprises 358 Modified event after a rain-out Saturday May 13th - but what a finish the large opening night crowd saw.

Once again Boyd MacTavish was on top - this time in the Paul Ashton 3A - but at the stripe the second generation driver was edged by Larry Lampman - in a finish that only a transponder could decide.

Ransomville and Merrittville Speedways are the two tracks that host weekly 358 Modified Events. After the opener at the Big R, the next event heads to Batavia NY and the Genesee County Speedway Friday June 24th for a 35 lap main event. From there it will be the focus of the TRW Nostalgia Night activities at the Thorold track with a 55 lap feature at Merrittville followed by a visit to Humberstone Sunday July 23rd. The Lucas Oil 358 Modified Shootout concludes at the Ohsweken Speedway Friday August 11th.

"We're really looking forward to hosting the Sportsmen opener," adds Humberstone GM and Race Director Bob Davidson, " with the help of Lucas Oil and Dirt TrackDigest.com . all of us are looking forward to showcasing our drivers in a unique way."

When the Sportsmen portion of the new unique series launches at the Humberstone Speedway - Sunday May 28th - one driver will be looking for a home track advantage. Bill Bleich has won two of the three Trail End Sportsmen Events in the books at the Port Colborne track. Bleich and fellow winner Rob Knapp will be among the ones to watch in the 50 lap Series Opener.

Ransomville Fans have also enjoyed quite a start to their Original Pizza Logs Sportsmen Division as like the 358 Modifieds - there has also been three different winners to date. Don Spatorico won the season opener while Jeff McGinnis and Kevin Wills have also won. The Lucas Oil Sportsmen Shootout will wind up at Ransomville Friday August 11th.

In Merrittville Speedway's version of the Original Pizza Logs Sportsmen - the single event to date saw Wayne Conn dominate in taking the win. Interestingly, although there have been three different winners at Ransomville, it is Conn that leads the Friday Night points also.

Merrittville's event will also celebrate it's 55th Season with a 55 lap event hosted by Avondale Food Stores - Saturday July 23rd.

In the two Genesee Sportsmen Bloch Industries feature events to date - Rob Pratt and Greg Mrzywka have each made trips to the Winner's Circle. Genesee will host the 40 lap Sportsmen event Saturday July 8th.

"With how unique the Lucas Oil Shootout is for both the 358 Modified and Sportsmen divisions," relates Genesee GM Dave McCready, " w thought that it should have a unique point system as well."

The Lucas Oil Shootout by DirtTrackDigest.com for both the Sportsmen and 358 Modified Divisions will crown an overall champion - but it will be the driver with the least amount of points not the one with the most that wins.

"Local race fans have never seen anything like it," informs DirtTrackDigest.com's Clint Geoffrey, speculating, " as the Shoot Out unfolds . the points should be so close . anyone will have a shot at the title . local Dirt Racing is what we're all about - we're just as excited about the possibilities . look what we've seen so far"

Race fans are encouraged to support their home track Shootout Events and follow their favorites when the Series visits another track.

"This new and exciting series gives our race teams a chance to participate in a lucrative series," says Merrittville GM Erica Bicknell, " with each of the tracks in close proximity . it should be very economical for them to experience other tracks and the fans too."

For each Shoot Out Series, a Point Fund will be awarded to the top 10 at the final event of each series. As an added bonus, drivers in each respective series that attend all 5 of their events will share in a 5 for 5 $2500 Series Bonus for their perfect attendance - for example if 10 Sportsmen drivers attend all 5 events - the 10 drivers each will earn $250.00. All point fund and bonus money will be in Canadian Funds.

Points at each series event will be awarded according to the driver's finishing position - i.e. if the driver finishes 1st - that driver will receive 1 point, for 10th - 10 points, 15th - 15 points etc. Drivers that miss an event will receive 30 points while drivers that don't qualify for the 24 car starting field will receive 25 points.

Between the 5 Series events for each Division, Point Fund and 5 for 5 Bonus Monies - the 2006 Lucas Oil Shoot Out by DirtTrackDigest.com will award Southern Ontario and Western New York Race Teams more than $70,000.

New Computer Debuts at St. Thomas

St. Thomas Dragway is pleased to announce that our new state-of-the-art TSI (Track Services Incorporated) race computer has been installed.

The new system includes many new features including Auto Start, provision for Cross-over, timing to four decimal points, the ability to add 1000' timers, the ability to print on the time slips the Elapsed Times at the 594' mark for 1/8 mile races, the ability to display speeds in metric (kilometres) or miles, several internal improvements for faster computing and reporting as well as new LCD display screens.

As well a new tree ‘blinder’ system is available. Discussions will be held with selected racers before some of the new programs are instituted.

We invite everyone to come to the control tower to view the new system and offer comments and suggestions on the new features.

Potekhen sets the pace during Thursday's wet test sessions at Mid-Ohio

May 18, 2006. Lexington, Ohio. Michael Potekhen, of Silverthorne, Colorado posted the fastest time of the day on Thursday during unofficial practice for Round Three of the Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Driving the Apex Racing Avenue Communities Mazda, Potekhen overcame the cold and wet conditions throughout the day to lap the 2.25-mile road course in 1:23.464 (97.393 MPH) in the second of three practice sessions.

"Today was a really good day for us at Apex Racing, even though the weather was gloomy, in fact I wouldn't mind if rained up until qualifying," Potekhen, who enters this weekend tied for the championship with Adrian Carrio explained. "We tested here several weeks ago and in the few dry laps we had today the balance in the car came right back and the lap times were falling. We are a new team this season and while we knew we would be strong we didn't know how quickly we would be running up front, so to come into this weekend tied for the championship and setting the fast time today is a credit to all the crew and their hard work."

Severe thunderstorm and high wind warnings greeted the teams on their arrival to the circuit this morning, and while the threats failed to fully materialize all three sessions were slowed by rain and damp conditions, with the second session, which started in dry conditions before showers rolled over the circuit near the halfway mark, offering drivers the best opportunity to set a quick lap.

Ross Smith, of Plano, Texas, set the second fastest time of the day at 1:23.618 (97.214 MPH) in his John Walko Racing Maxwell Paper Products Mazda, while Carrio, from Monument, Colorado, was third fastest on the day in the World Speed Motorsports Rockford Fosgate Mazda at 1:23.850 (96.945 MPH). Ryan Justice, who led every session in Houston and captured his first series victory, topped the time sheets in the first and final practice session but could only set the fourth fastest time of the day at 1:25.615 (94.946 MPH) in his Northwest Autosport Mazda. Defending Masters Champion John Pew rounded out the top five drivers on the day, with the North Palm Beach, Florida, driver clocking a time of 1:26.632 in his NVG Velocity Motorsports Mazda.

Official practice for Round Three of the Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear is scheduled to begin on Friday, May 19th at 8:50 AM Eastern Time.

CASCAR: Dilley looks to continue hot streak at Barrie Speedway

Dodge Charger driver won CASCAR’s lone visit to Barrie in ‘05

BARRIE, ON – It’s easy to see why Mark Dilley is looking forward this weekend’s CASCAR Super Series season opener at Barrie Speedway. The driver of the #9 Dodge Motorsports Charger guided his MOPAR-powered late model to the checkered flag in last year’s lone stop at the 1/3-mile tri-oval, and he’s looking forward to defending his win in Sunday night’s 250-lap feature event.

“We won the Barrie race last year,” said the Barrie, ON resident, whose Dodge will carry associate sponsorship from Mobil1, Exide, Leland Industries, Avenue Motor Works, CRS and NTN in ‘06. “Actually, we’ve had a really good run at Barrie Speedway in the past while. We also won the CASCAR Sportsman Series race there in 2004 and some Legends races. Hopefully we can keep our streak alive, because I think we’ve won our last five races there, in various cars.”

The format for the CASCAR opener will include pole position time trials on Saturday afternoon, followed by a pair of 50-lap qualifying sprint races later that night, which will set the grid for Sunday evening’s main event.

“The key to racing at a short track like Barrie is you have to qualify in the top 10 or else you really make it hard on yourself in the race,” continued Dilley. “It’s just that much tougher coming through traffic at a track like Barrie. You don’t want to have trouble in the 50 lapper and be starting in the 20s on Sunday night, that’s for sure. It’s going to be exciting for the fans and that’s what it’s all about. Our goal is to qualify up front, and barring that, get it to the front as soon as possible and try to keep it there.”

Dilley is starting his eighth season as part of Whitlock Motorsports. The former CASCAR Super Series champ finished in eighth-place in the 2005 points chase, and is looking to challenge for the title in ’06.

“We have a bit of a new look on the #9 Dodge Motorsports Charger this year and we’re happy to welcome our sponsors back. I’m also looking forward to our eighth season with Whitlock Motorsports.” In addition to a tweaked paint scheme on the #9 Charger, Dilley is excited about having a brand new oval car, which performed well in pre-season testing at Barrie.

Time Trials for the GO-RACING.CA 300 take place on Saturday (May 20) at 4:30 p.m. The first of the Twin 50s is scheduled to begin at 8:45. On Sunday (May 21) the spectator gates at Barrie Speedway will open at 3:00 p.m. The driver autograph session is slated for 7:00 and the 250-lap Super Series season opener will take the green flag at 8:30 p.m.

CASCAR: DOUG BROWN SEEKS STRONG START TO CASCAR SEASON

BRANTFORD, ON – Doug Brown and his NAPA Autopro team mates head to Barrie Speedway this weekend determined to kick start their season with a solid run and strong finish in CASCAR’s 2006 Super Series opener.

The Brantford racing veteran is also hoping to erase the memories of the past two season openers when engine problems brought about early ends to the afternoon activities.

“We definitely need better results to start the season and we’ll need to put forth some solid and consistent runs throughout the year to crack the top-ten when the final season points are tallied,” he commented when discussing his thoughts for improving upon his finish in last season’s standings. “ We’ve spent a great deal of time and money to refresh our engines and refurbish the chassis in order to improve our competitiveness, now it’s a case of racing one race at a time”.

Brown finished eleventh in the national standings last year –his first full season on Canada’s premier stock car racing circuit. With eight top-10 finishes in the 12-event/14-race series, he’s quietly optimistic a 10th-place or better finish in this year’s national series standings is an attainable goal.

This year’s Super Series schedule will see the Brantford-based team compete in six Ontario events; a special appearance at the CHAMP Car World Series event in Edmonton; a weekend special at Vernon, BC’s Sun Valley Speedway; a three-day weekend at the historic road racing Grand Prix des Trois Rivieres and a Saturday night special at Autodrome St. Eustache, north of Montreal. The site of an eleventh event is still to be confirmed.

The ten confirmed events on this year’s schedule are projected to draw upwards of 355,000 live fans and with Rogers Sportsnet and US-based Speed Channel again providing tape-delayed coverage of Super Series events, the series will again receive the most television coverage of any Canadian motorsports series.

The CASCAR schedule for this weekend at Barrie begins on Saturday afternoon with time trails and two 50-lap qualifiers with the “GO-RACING.CA 300” scheduled to get underway at 8:30 p.m. on Sunday.

ACT TOUR DRIVERS SWITCH GEARS FOR RE/MAX 100

LEE, NH -- The ACT Tour’s Late Model teams head to New Hampshire’s 3/8ths mile Lee USA Speedway Sunday (post time 2:00 pm) for the Re/Max 100. For the competitors who traveled to the 5/8ths mile Circuit Ste-Croix for last Saturday’s Banlien Ford 100 in Quebec, there will be some adjustments necessary to find the handle at the smaller track.

The Ste-Croix speedplant is one of the more challenging on the 2006 12-race schedule. The speed coming off both straight-aways and into the first and third corners required a tremendous amount of brake. The speeds reached at the Lee oval, due to its size, are considerably less, although stout brakes are a benefit through the track’s tight corners.

The Granite State track’s corners are more symmetrical when compared to those at the Canadian race track, which are drastically different. The fourth turn even does up hell before turning on to the front stretch! The talk in the pits among the drivers competing at Ste-Croix for the first time centered on how to successfully negotiate both ends of the track.

Most were able to get one end figured out while the other caused a lot of head scratching. Additionally, Lee USA features a retaining wall all the way around the perimeter of the track whereas Ste-Croix allows for a car to scrub-off speed before coming into contact with a concrete barrier.

Who are among the favorites to win the Tour’s Re/Max 100? In addition to the usual cast of characters including multi-time champion, Jean-Paul Cyr, Brent Dragon and Dave Pembroke, there are a host of young guns hoping to make their mark.

Leading the way is the “Rocketman” Roger Brown from Lancaster, NH. Brown has turned in some impressive runs at Lee USA since his 2003 rookie season with ACT including several podium finished, but he’s yet to carry the checkers. Sunday could be his breakthrough day. Mike Collins of Strafford, NH, who plans to run the Tour in 2006, cut his racing teeth at the seacoast speedplant. Just a few short weeks ago, Collins edged Brown out for a 100 lap win at the track. There’s a grudge match in the making.

Other up and comers to watch out for include AJ Begin, Joey Polewarczyk, Bobby Baillargeon, Ryan Vanasse, Marc Curtis, Scott Payea and Ryan Nolin, among others. Coupled with veterans Phil Scott, Joey Laquerre, Dave Whitcomb, Patrick Laperle, and Ben Rowe, the stage is set for a showdown on Sunday.

Lucas Oil: Staying in Canada... and in Canadian motorsports

MISSISSAUGA, ON – In the past few weeks, speculation has swirled about the future of Lucas Oil in the Canadian motorsports market. Lucas Oil has made a huge impact on the Canadian racing scene in recent years with its aggressive sponsorship of several series, racers and events north of the border.

In April, Don Baker – the face of Lucas Oil in Canada – went on "indefinite leave of absence" from the company. The reason for the move was not disclosed.

The situation with Baker caused speculation to run rampant in recent weeks, including rumours that Lucas was canceling all of its Canadian motorsports-related sponsorships and closing shop in Canada.

Reached today at Lucas’ Mississauga, Ont. office, Steve Snowden addressed these rumours and the issues that gave rise to them.

“Lucas Oil is remaining in Canada at its current location and will be running business as usual out of Canada,” said Snowden. “And we will continue to support motorsports in Canada.”

Snowden underlined these themes on several occasions during the on-the-record interview.

As for Don Baker’s status, Snowden said, “Don [Baker] is no longer with the company, and I am in charge.”

Asked about the various sponsorships that Lucas has been involved with, Snowden said, “We are still going forward with our NHRA commitments. We are still going forward with the Can-Am Midgets and the Canadian Vintage Modifieds and Brighton Speedway.”

Snowden also confirmed that the company’s sponsorship of the recently announced Lucas Oil Shootout dirt oval racing series would proceed, as would the Festival of Horsepower.

After itemizing the series and programs that would remain, Snowden commented on the remaining properties that have yet to be settled, including the Weekend Warrior Series.

“Yes, there’s that and a couple of deals with individual drivers that are still being negotiated, as well as some facility agreements out west.”

Snowden said he hoped to have something more concrete regarding the WWS in “about a week”, and that “We are endeavouring to honour most of our commitments.”

While Snowden didn’t confirm that Lucas was ending its sponsorship of the WWS, more than one WWS track promoter contacted today said it was their understanding that the Lucas deal with the WWS would not continue into 2006.

Fresh off his 13th-place finish in his ARCA debut at Winchester Speedway, Ottawa's Pierre Bourque sent us this note about his next few on-track outings. The web news guru will be driving a Whitlock Motorsports prepped-Dodge Charger in several CASCAR events this season.

"I'm racing ARCA at Toledo this weekend ... practice & qualifying Saturday, race on Sunday. Then on Tuesday I'm in the official ARCA test at the Michigan International Speedway. Andy Hillenburg's sending up two cars for me, the first for the half-mile at Toledo, the second for the 2-mile speedway at Michigan.

I'm stoked for Toledo and anxious to capitalize on my 13th place finish at Winchester two weeks ago. I'm also looking forward to driving the 2-miler, will be the longest track I've driven in a stock car and I think the day I spent on the 1.5 mile Atlanta Motor Speedway will have been time well spent for me.

Andy spots for me in the races and during all other track activities. Since he's a former ARCA champ, and the owner of a top stock car racing school, I feel like I've got the best eyes possible working for me ! I'll also be thinking about my new CASCAR teammate Dave Whitlock and I hope he does really well in the CASCAR season-opener at Barrie on the weekend."

A record field of Rookie drivers has entered this years FLO-PRO.COM / CASCAR West Series program setting the stage for what will be an exciting and entertaining season of racing. Among the Rookie challengers will be Raichelle Wagner of Hague Saskatchewan, one of two female drivers in CASCAR racing.

Jessica Cyr of Sechelt, BC.is also running her Rookie year in CASCAR, but is contending the National Super Series. Brothers Scott and Chris Dennis from Edmonton, Shawn Press of Calgary, and Robb Zimmer of Kamloops are among the full crop aspiring contenders for this year's Rookie title.

A host of veteran CASCAR racers are returning this year hoping to dethrone five time CASCAR West Champion Kevin Dowler of Edmonton, AB who is also back to do battle on the tarmac, and no doubt, has his sights set on yet another crown! CASCAR Super Series season set to kick off this weekend at Barrie Speedway with the GO-RACING.CA 300

TORONTO, ON – The CASCAR Super Series opens its 2006 season this weekend at Barrie Speedway with the GO-RACING.CA 300. Sunday night’s 250-lap Super Series feature race will be the highlight of a busy weekend of racing action at the 1/3-mile tri-oval, which will also include a pair of 50-lap Super Series qualifying sprint races on Saturday evening, as well as all of Barrie’ regular weekend divisions.

As has been the case for the previous five CASCAR Super Series seasons, the talk heading into the season opener will centre on the ability of any of the contenders to unseat Don Thomson Jr. from the top of the point standings. The Chevy driver has won the last five consecutive CASCAR Super Series National titles, and appears to be as determined as ever to keep the string alive in ’06.

Living by the old adage, ‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,’ Don Thomson discussed his strategy for defending his championship. “I know it’s boring, but I’m not looking to do a lot different. We go to every race and try to get the car fast, qualify well, and save our car for the end of the race.”

The only real difference with this year’s season opener, as opposed to others in recent years, is that it will be taking place at a physical short track. Barrie has a reputation for tough wheel-to-wheel action, and Thomson believes he’s ready for whatever happens.

“We’ve made some changes to address the situation of being at Barrie,” Thomson continued. “We mounted two bodies on the car – one we call the ‘Barrie body’ – and another set of spares, in case we run into trouble. If something was to happen to the bumper assemblies or the body panels, I have spares ready to go.”

All of Thomson’s main rivals from recent years will be returning to take another shot at the Home Hardware Chevy driver, including last year’s points runner-up Peter Gibbons, DJ Kennington, Dave Whitlock, Brad Graham, Ron Beauchamp, Kerry Micks and Mark Dilley.

Pole qualifying for the GO-RACING.CA 300 takes place on Saturday afternoon (May 20) at 4:30 p.m. The first of two Twin 50 Qualifying Sprint Races is slated to commence at 8:45 p.m. and will set the grid for Sunday’s feature event. Spectator gates open at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday (May 21) in advance of a full slate of Barrie Speedway’s regular home divisions. Following those features, the CASCAR drivers take to the track at 7 p.m. – with pens in hand – for the autograph session. The 2006 Super Series season will get underway officially at 8:30 p.m. when the green flag flies to start the 250-lap main event, the GO-RACING.CA 300.

Barrie, Ontario racer Mark Dilley won last year’s CASCAR Super Series stop at Barrie Speedway, in his Dodge Charger… Another racer who used to call Barrie Speedway his ‘hometrack’ is former Super Series champion Kerry Micks. The Mt. Albert, ON racer is heading to the opener with sponsorship from Two-Tyme Recycling & Disposal on his Ford Taurus. Micks Motorsports is looking for a sponsor for the remainder of the season, but Micks is happy to have Two-Tyme on his car at Barrie, where he won the pole and finished second in 2005… The Twin 50 qualifying sprint races on Saturday night (May 20) will offer championship points.

CASCAR WESTERN SERIES NOTES: FLO~PRO.COM Western Series racer Kevin Dowler will begin his quest for a record-extending sixth Western Series crown this weekend at Sun Valley Motor Speedway, in Vernon, BC. The Edmonton, AB racer says this will be his final year of CASCAR competition.
The FLO-PRO.COM Western Series takes the green flag on Saturday night (May 20) at the half-mile Sun Valley oval. In all, the series will consist of eight races, including a pair of Super Series cross-over events, at Sun Valley and the Grand Prix of Edmonton Champ Car weekend.

CASCAR SPORTSMAN SERIES: While two of CASCAR’s touring divisions will be in action this weekend, the start of the 2006 CASCAR Sportsman Series will take place next month on the oval at Mosport Speedway. The season opening event, on Saturday, June 17, will be part of the Father’s Day CASCAR Doubleheader Weekend at the legendary Mosport facility.

BRIAN WORKMAN: The CASCAR community was saddened to hear of the recent passing of longtime team member Brian Workman. For many years, Brian was on the crew of Neil Fair’s #55 team. And in 2005, the Ancaster, ON resident was a key part of Don Thomson’s successful ‘Drive for Five’ in which the #4 Home Hardware team earned its fifth-consecutive Super Series National Championship. Commenting on the passing of Workman, Thomson said, “Our thoughts are with Brian’s family and friends at this difficult time. I was fortunate enough to have him on my crew last year and he was a huge part of this team’s fifth National Championship. People don’t realize what a funny guy he was. When things started to get down and out, we always had Brian to keep us in stitches and keep things light. We’re really going to miss him at Fitzpatrick Motorsports and I know a lot of people on a bunch of teams will miss him. We only had him on our team for a short time, but Neil Fair and his guys got to enjoy his company for years. Everyone liked Brian. He will be missed.” CASCAR joins Thomson in offering condolences to the family and friends of Brian Workman.

Formula BMW USA in Mid-Ohio: Junior BMW scholar Pelletier starts open wheel career

Montreal, May 17th, 2006. – Maxime Pelletier has been waiting for the moment for months and he will finally debut his open wheel career with a double header in Mid-Ohio this weekend in the international ladder series that has become the Formula BMW USA championship.

After extensive testing last winter and the official pre-season testing, the 15-year old from Longueuil, Quebec is ready to tackle heavy competition from the 25-plus car grid that enters this series for its third year in North America.

He will steer the Gelles Racing Western Union #3 car. The BMW Junior scholar will also benefit from the presence of engineer- mechanic Marco Tischer who prepared World champion Marco Holzer’s FB02 machine last year in Europe and veteran driver coach Claude Bourbonnais.

‘’The learning curve has been unbelievable since I left karting last fall, argues Pelletier. First I got a scholarship from the series in Spain where we had the BMW training camp. Then I joined Gelles Racing and our test days have been very successful all winter and in the pre-season testing sessions. I worked hard with my teammates and the racing staff and we proved we would be the team to beat.”

“Now I learn that mister Claude Bourbonnais will be available to develop my driving skills over the season and that Marco Tischer will join Gelles to prepare my car. He is recognized as one of the best in the series in the last years and was crew chief for (Marco) Holzer in Bahrain. I don’t want to pressure myself but I feel we will have the tools to succeed.”

Still in High School in a special sports program, Pelletier was recently named Ambassador and will represent his institution, Charles-Lemoyne College.

May 17, 2006. Ron Beauchamp Jr. and the Mopar Parts team are completing final preparations on their Dodge Charger for the first race of the 2006 CASCAR Super Series racing season set to take place this coming weekend at Barrie Speedway.

Following months of meticulous work the team is now fine tuning the car and setting the plan for what is always a grueling summer race schedule. “We want to have exactly the same kind of start as last year” beamed Ron Beauchamp Jr. “Winning the first race of the season with such a dominating car last year really put us in the right frame of mind to start the year off. CASCAR: JACOMBS SET TO TAKE TO THE TRACK FOR SEASON OPENER

HAMILTON, ON - The season opener of the CASCAR Super Series 2006 schedule is set to take place this Victoria Day long weekend at Barrie Speedway. After many years of opening the season at Delaware Speedway, London’s popular half mile, the first event this year will take place on the tight confines of the Barrie track. The fans are going to see 250 laps of all out rubbing and racing when 28 cars take to the track for the GoRacing.ca 300.

“We are excited that the season is about to start and there is no doubt in my mind that the fans are going to get their moneys worth this weekend,” said Dave Jacombs. “Barrie is known for its competitive bumping and grinding style and I am sure this race will be no different. OSCAAR: Fast & Furious Super Late Model Action at Flamboro!

OSCAAR's 2006 season opener takes place this Sunday, May 21, at Flamboro Speedway. After a long winter, everyone is anxiously waiting for the return to action-packed Outlaw racing on Ontario's speedways. With the first of 14 races now only days away, OSCAAR fans have a great racing season to look forward to.

Before drivers and teams get to the track, who will win the race to get ready for the first event? Every year this remains a big challenge for the teams. Over the off-season there were some rule changes. That led to decision making time in the engine department. So it will be interesting to see which teams arrive at the track with modified engines or perhaps new ones. As always, OSCAAR fans can look forward to seeing some new car bodies and paint jobs!

Rookie of the Year contender Glenn Watson has served notice that his first year in OSCAAR will be a strong one. The team practiced recently at Peterborough and Barrie Speedways. The new #22 team have prepared an awesome looking super late which has power to boot.

John Fletcher and the #61 team had a great off-season with announcements about new and returning sponsors. Recently, their web site featured an interview with John: "The Championship - I could go the year without winning a race if we can give the championship to JNE". With that statement John has served notice to the other teams that 2006 will see a very determined push for the OSCAAR Title by the #61 team.

However, speculation abounds on the look for the #61 Outlaw. Will it be the same white body and blue decals as last year or will John show up with a new look for 2006? We don't know and the answer to that question will only be found by showing up at Flamboro on Sunday!

OSCAAR's 2005 Champions, Rob Clarke and the #49 team, weren't sitting around playing Blackjack over the winter. Any one who regularly visits the OSCAAR web site will have already seen the great looking #49 Outlaw car for 2006. The team worked hard getting it ready for the Performance World Car Show and that put them ahead of most other OSCAAR teams in the "ready-for-racing" department.

The following quote is from the Driver Page of Rob Clarke's web site: "As the 2006 season approaches there have been many changes over the past 26 years, but "ONE THING" still remains consistent, Rob's continued desire to WIN!". That ever-burning flame of racing passion will keep Rob in championship form for many years!

Top performers from last year, Drew Spicer, Gary Passer, Ed Bowlby, John Owen and Ken Hayward, are all returning with strong intentions of giving Fletcher and Clarke a run for the money. Jeff Hanley's 2006 racing program continues to be source of great interest by many fans. Will he be in a late model, super late model or both? Which super will he drive? Only time will tell folks!

Several drivers have stepped up their racing programs from last year. The list includes Rob Bickle, Bruce Gowland, TJ Woolsey and Phil Bullen. TJ Woolsey will be driving the #43 car again but intends to complete a full season of racing in the recently purchased Jeff Hanley car. Meanwhile, The V&L Transportation racing team has prepared the #93 Outlaw as a back-up car for TJ and a three-race ride in '06 for Steve Lyons. Other new drivers for 2006 include Tom Cuzzila Jr in the #50 and Jim Lowenberg in the #11.

Sunday's racing starts at 6pm but as with all OSCAAR events you will want to arrive early to get a seat. Cheer on your favourite driver(s) and join us in celebrating the start of the 2006 super late model season. See you there!

Fluid cooling is one of the keys to providing a performance package that will allow a vehicle to attain its ultimate performance level and provide long service life. With the SuperCoolers offered by B&M you will be able to provide the additional fluid cooling your vehicle needs. In addition to the fluid coolers, B&M also offers many additional products that will allow you to complete the entire cooling package for you or your customers’ vehicle. SuperCoolers are found on pages 61-64 in the B&M catalog.

For example: When installing a high-stall torque converter to improve the acceleration of the vehicle, often times this higher stall is achieved by using a smaller diameter torque converter. A smaller converter holds less fluid with a result of decreased fluid capacity in the transmission and converter assembly. To maintain the typical fluid capacity or to increase the capacity of a stock transmission and converter assembly a deeper transmission pan is one of the easiest solutions.

Another example: For diesel powered pick-up applications where performance chips and exhaust upgrades are currently popular items, keeping the automatic transmission running cool is a must! A SuperCooler is one key component in keeping the transmission fluid cool. Another item to consider is a deep pan for the automatic transmission which will increase the fluid capacity. Increasing the fluid capacity will improve the cooling ability in the entire system. Deep Pans are found on page 58 in the B&M catalog.

MOSPORT'S VICTORIA DAY SPEEDFEST IS THE PLACE TO BE THIS LONG WEEKEND

Sounds of Racing, Rock, Fireworks & Camping Are Featured

(BOWMANVILLE, ON – May 15, 2006) Mosport International Raceway kicks-off the 2006 season this holiday long-weekend with the Victoria Day SpeedFest, May 19, 20 & 21, featuring a great line-up of auto racing, live music and fireworks. Mosport's 750 acres of private parkland is the perfect setting for one of the biggest and best Victoria Day weekend celebrations in Ontario.

The muscle cars of The American GT Challenge (AGT) and four other race championships will help put the speed into the SpeedFest weekend. The roar of the AGT’s powerful V-8 engines is music to ears of race fans, as the 16-car field of Corvettes, Camaros and Mustangs will bring back memories of the now-defunct Trans-Am Series to Mosport’s challenging 4-kilometre road course. The AGT’s twin finals will run on Sunday.

Saturday’s feature is the three-hour Sundown Grand Prix endurance race into darkness, with GT and Touring cars, like Acuras, BMWs and Porsches battling for overall and class wins, plus entries from the new U.S.-based Miata Endurance Championship.

The race schedule also includes the Cup Lites Series (three-quarter scale stock cars that are slick looking and have the same power-to-weight ratio as a full size Grand National car), the Civic Challenge for Hondas and the F1200 open-wheel series.


The off track activities at this year’s Victoria SpeedFest are as strong as ever, with six bands taking to Mosport’s infield Concert Stage. Saturday’s line-up includes All The Brightness, Little Sunday and Stevie Ray Vaughan tribute band, Rave On. Sunday’s acts are Rise For Order, The Room (who opened for Bon Jovi last March) and Wildt with their tribute to Jimi Hendrix. The shows will start at 5 pm each day. Mosport’s Victoria Day weekend fireworks show is scheduled for Saturday night just after darkness.

10th place for Ryan Litt at Auto City; Berlin Next

May 11th, 2006 – The Auto Value/Bumper to Bumper Super Sprints series has a rule which says all drivers must start at the rear of each race they compete in during their first night of competition. While Ryan Litt is not really a rookie in sprint cars anymore, having competed part time with various series over the past 2 seasons, he is competing for the AVSS rookie of the year award this season and therefore had to follow the rookie rule. This meant the 19 year old from Lyons, Ontario, Canada and his #07 BS&B Radiator/OTC-SPX Tools Sprinter would have to start at the back of the 3rd Heat despite Time Trialing 11th out of 24 cars.

Starting at the back of Heat Race #3 with fellow Rookie of the Year candidate Chad Goff, Ryan fought an ill-handling race car and was only able to finish 7th, short of the 5th place transfer spot directly to the A-Main. In the B-Main, Ryan was able to squeak into the 5th and last transfer spot and earn a starting spot in the A-Main. Starting shotgun on the field in 21st, Ryan was able to charge all the way through the field during the non-stop 30 lap A-Main to finish in 10th position, becoming the race’s highest finishing rookie in the process.

Summing up his first visit to Auto City Speedway, Ryan had this to say:
"We had a pretty good day. We had to change the setup around quite a bit and we were off until feature time - we seemed to be pretty close then. It took me some time to learn the fast way around Auto City. It's a real tricky place - oddly shaped and pretty tight.

“Contending for rookie of the year meant I had to start near the back of the race so that made it really tough to get up front, but we'll take a top 10 and look to be up front at Berlin. I have to thank all my sponsors and my crew for working so hard to get the car good at the end."

The 10th place finish means Ryan also sits in 10th place in the AVSS drivers standings going into Round #2 of the AVSS season at Berlin Raceway near Grand Rapids, Michigan this coming weekend. Berlin is one of Ryan’s favourite tracks and it is the site of Ryan’s best finish in a full size sprint car – a 2nd place in June of last season during only his 2nd start in a winged sprint car.

Milton On; The OSCAAR Outlaw Super Late Model season opens this weekend, and John Fletcher already sounds like a guy who needs a day off. Then again, he may be relieved to finally spend a little time in a race car. John Fletcher and his Team JNE Consulting are opening their 2006 Season this Sunday at Flamboro Speedway near Hamilton and after an off season of rebuilding and preparing cars for other competitors it will be nice to strap himself in the 2006 Team JNE Consulting Chevy for a nice Sunday afternoon romp. The very familiar 1/3 mile Flamboro Speedway plays host to race 1 of 14 and home of many of John’s victory’s over the years.

“I’m very excited to get back racing and challenge the 49 team for the title.” John was also asked to comment on the new crop of rookies, his rivals, sponsors and the series.

Q. OSCAAR – How has it changed a how do you feel you fit in as a competitor, mentor and challenger for each race win?
John – Wow, We have raced everything in Ontario and the series has made tremendous strides to be the premier race series in Ontario, If not Canada. To help the up and comer’s with there cars is great, we are all racing out there and as the get better we all will be better. My business is to race and win.

Q. Rival Rob Clarke or Jeff Hanley?
John – I have the utmost respect for both guys, Rob and I can go wheel to wheel for 50 Laps and know I will get raced the same as I race him. Jeff is the same and we will miss him in 2006 but he will be back.

Q. As in NASCAR there seems to be a good crop of rookies every year?
John – Like NASCAR the good young talent wants to race the fastest and best series they can and if they see OSCAAR as that then that is great.

Q. Your Crew?
John – Next Question….. No but seriously I would not race as much or as good without the guys we have on the team.

Q. Sponsors?
John - JNE Consulting has been a sponsor come true, they love the sport and have great company support of what we need as a team. All our sponsors have great products or services that we go after because we use them.

Q. Media Coverage in Ontario.
John – We take for granted that media people who cover NASCAR, CART or F1 should cover us but we have to give them reasons to want to. The fans know what we can do as a series but it is up to the teams to make sure we do what we can to allow any type of media to want to cover us.

John – The Championship, I could go the year without winning a race if we can give the championship to JNE.

The renewal of a 10-year lease for racing on Ile Notre Dame, a contract between the city of Montreal and motorsport promoter Normand Legault, is the final turn to be negotiated, one that's expected to be rounded in the next couple of weeks.
And when it is, Legault will announce that the NASCAR Busch Series will unleash 43 of its 3,400-pound Chevy, Ford and Dodge lookalikes for a fender-rubbing, paint-trading race on the Expo 67 island.

Busy weekend for A1 drivers

A number of A1 drivers continued their summer programmes with a busy weekend of racing.

In the fourth round of GP2, Nelson Piquet, Alex Premat, Nicolas Lapierre and Fairuz Fauzy were taking part in their second successive weekend of racing, this time at the Catalunya circuit just outside Barcelona. After a qualifying session that was turned on its head, Piquet started from pole, Premat second, Lapierre thirteenth and Fauzy 25th, after a number of drivers, including original pole sitter Lewis Hamilton and Lapierre had their fastest times taken away for not heeding yellow flag warnings.

At the start of the first race, Piquet and Premat held their positions, but after pitting, Premat emerged behind ART team mate Lewis Hamilton. Piquet lost the lead after suffering a drive through penalty for speeding in the pit lane which dropped him down the field. This left Hamilton in the lead, with Premat a close second. On the last lap, Premat dived past Hamilton, resulting in contact which sent his team mate into a spin. Hamilton recovered to take second behind Premat. Piquet, meanwhile managed to fight his way back up to fourth.

The second race was a much quieter affair. Piquet made a lightening start to move up from fifth to second while Premat followed him through the field, up to third from his eighth place grid slot. Positions remained unchanged at the front of the field, with the Piquet and Premat finishing a close second and third respectively.

Piquet leaves Spain at the top of the championship table, with Premat currently lying third, and Lapierre fifth.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the Atlantic, two of A1GP’s younger stars were getting to grips with the new street circuit in Houston, in the second round of the Champ Car Atlantic series.

A1 Team Lebanon driver Graham Rahal showed he had the pace to challenge for race wins, starting the race from third on the grid and making it up to second halfway through the race. With only a few minutes to go, Rahal challenged for the lead, making contact with race leader Matos, which saw Rahal fall down the field with damaged suspension. A1 Team South Africa driver, Stephen Simpson also had a day to forget after a promising sixth row start. Simpson made contact with the wall on the opening lap, which effectively ended his race.

Yoong and RfH team opt to miss the Spa Le Mans Series race
A1 Team Malaysia driver, Alex Yoong, did not take part in the Spa round of Le Mans Series following a team decision to change the engine installation of the Dome S101 sportscar driven by Yoong and team mate, Jan Lammers, who is also team owner of A1 Team Netherlands.

The Dome S101 Hb ran with a Mugen engine during the Paul Ricard test and the 1000KM race in Istanbul, but RfH has decided to change back to a Judd engine.

Yoong said of this decision, ‘It is a shame we couldn’t run at Spa, which would have given us more track time before the 24 hour race, but the ‘big’ race has always been our priority and we have to give ourselves the best possible chance for success in France. I’m enjoying driving in the sportscar, it makes a change to be in a bigger car than the A1 Grand Prix car. As in A1GP, the racing is fast, furious and very competitive.’

RfH with drivers Alex Yoong and Jan Lammers will be returning to track action for the Le Mans testing days in early June prior to the famed 24 hours of Le Mans race which takes place from 17-18 June. With the event coinciding with the Football World Cup, the car has been liveried with black and white football shapes. The team is planning for fans to be able to buy a ‘ball’ on the car – further details will be available shortly.

Winning A1 Team Malaysia Car on show in Malaysia
The A1 Team Malaysia car driven to victory by Alex Yoong at the Shanghai International Circuit on 2 April 2006 is currently in Malaysia.

A1 Team Malaysia have put together a roadshow in order to show the car to as many people as possible between now and mid June 2006.

A1GP chassis number 41 was used throughout the inaugural A1 Grand Prix World Cup of Motorsport season at circuits in 11 countries on 5 continents. The car was driven by both Alex Yoong and Fairuz Fauzy resulting in A1 Team Malaysia finishing 5th overall in the World Cup of Motorsport.

Yoong says of the roadshow, ‘We felt that it was important to have the car in Malaysia to allow our commercial partners and the Malaysian public the opportunity to see the car 'up close and personal'. We are very proud of our achievements in the first A1 Grand Prix season and wanted to share that feeling with our supporters and fans. The most logical way to do that was to ship the car to Malaysia and show it off!’

From 26 May to 4 June the car will be on display as an integral part of the Proton stand at the KL International Motorshow at the PWTC in Kuala Lumpur.

Another mile stone for first female A1GP driver
Katherine Legge had a successful day of testing on the infamous Milwaukee Mile, happy with her first taste of oval driving.

‘We had a good day’, Katherine said, ‘I think we were faster than the guys who were there last week, which is always the aim. There were similar conditions as well, so it was a success as far as we’re concerned.’

Katherine took to the track in an A1GP car at the Dubai Autodrome for A1 Team Great Britain last December. John Surtees, Team Principal, was very impressed with her feedback on the car during the two extra test sessions, ‘Katherine did absolutely everything that was asked of her’, adding ‘when it comes to reviewing the situation for next year’s programme, she’ll certainly be considered’.

‘We the People’ car makes a pit stop en route to Indy

A1 Team USA and title sponsor GEICO invited nearly 25,000 Berkshire Hathaway shareholders to cheer for Al Unser, Jr. driving the ‘We The People’ car at this year’s Indianapolis 500 during the GEICO parent company’s annual shareholder’s meeting. Berkshire Hathaway is headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska.

A1 TEAM USA Owner Rick Weidinger presented Berkshire Hathaway Chairman Warren Buffett (pictured) and GEICO CEO Tony Nicely with Official team helmets at the meeting, while both executives took turns behind the wheel of their team’s Indianapolis 500 entry.

‘As a native Nebraskan, someone who grew up in Omaha and graduated from high school, college and graduate school right here in town, it is a real honor to present A1 Team USA to Mr. Buffett.’ said Weidinger. ‘I personally want to thank Tony and Bill Roberts [Executive Vice President of GEICO] for the opportunity to participate in this fantastic event. Next stop, Indy and we’ll carry the spirit of the entire GEICO and Berkshire Hathaway community with us.’
