NASCAR: Versatility Puts Christopher Back On Top In Hunter Index
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Sept. 10, 2010) – It's hard to beat the perfection produced recently by Duane Howard in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series or Andrew Ranger in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Mobil 1. But then again, Ted Christopher has made it a habit of prevailing against whatever competition he faces.
The September edition of the Hunter Index is no different, as Christopher's efforts over the last month put him atop the latest edition of the monthly power poll designed to highlight the standout performances in the NASCAR Developmental Series.
The Hunter Index is a new feature in 2010 on NASCARHomeTracks.com. Drivers are ranked on their performance over the previous month. The rankings are compiled by a panel of auto racing writers and NASCAR representatives.
Christopher, who also earned the honor in May, has been on a tear lately on two levels:
He has climbed to sixth in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national rankings and is within 13 points of third with two weeks remaining. Over the past four weeks, he has rattled off four wins, six top fives and seven top 10s in eight starts in the Modified divisions at Thompson (Conn.) International Speedway and Stafford (Conn.) Motor Speedway.
At the same time, Christopher has put together a similar season-changing momentum swing to challenge Bobby Santos III for the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour title. Christopher briefly took the points lead with a dominating win at Thompson. He also led the most laps at Bristol Motor Speedway before a mechanical failure ended his day early. Christopher has two wins, a second and a fifth in his last five tour races.
"He's one of the best drivers in the business today," said voter Spencer Lewis, representing the Canadian publication Inside Track Motorsports News. "His ability to perform at a consistently high level week in and week out, against a variety of competition, puts him on a different level than everybody else."
Interestingly enough, Christopher only earned one of the six first-place votes.
Ranger, who came in second, picked up two, while third-place Howard had the other three.
Panelists rank their top 15, with first place receiving 15 points, second 14, third 13 and so on.
Ranger, who was also second in the July rankings, was 2-for-2 in his starts over the last four weeks. He continued his mastery of road courses with wins at Trois-Rivieres and Montreal. The latter came by way of a thrilling last-turn, last-lap bump-and-run on Jason Bowles – just moments after Bowles had used a similar move to take the lead from Ranger.
Howard was similarly unbeatable. The Oley, Penn., driver has five straight wins in the 385 Modified Division on the dirt at Grandview Speedway in Bechtesville, Penn. Overall, Howard has won six of the last seven features there and has eight wins and six second-place finishes in 14 starts since May 22. He is third in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national standings.
"You can't help but be impressed with the run Duane Howard has put together," said Brett Bodine, who is the chairman of the NASCAR Resumé Committee and represents the NASCAR competition side on the panel. "With Grandview's handicapping system, he's starting in the second half of the field and every week is charging to the front. He's got that track figured out this year and he's getting it done against some quality competition that has more than their share of wins and championships at that place."
Eric Holmes, who extended his NASCAR K&N Pro Series West points lead with a convincing win at Colorado National Speedway, is ranked fourth and Keith Rocco is fifth. Rocco, from Wallingford, Conn., has already clinched the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series championship and has three wins and seven top fives in his last 10 starts racing in the Modified divisions at Thompson, Stafford and Waterford (Conn.) Speedbowl.
Justin Johnson of Toyota Speedway at Irwindale (Calif.) (NASCAR Whelen All-American Series) is sixth, followed by Ty Dillon (NASCAR K&N Pro Series East), Craig Preble (NASCAR Whelen All-American Series), Don Thomson Jr. (NASCAR Canadian Tire Series) and James Civali (NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour).
Four drivers earned honorable mention, including Andy Seuss, who won the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour race at Caraway Speedway in Asheboro, N.C., and German Quiroga, who is coming off a NASCAR Mexico Series win at San Luis Potosi.
The Hunter Index is named for Jim Hunter, NASCAR's vice president of corporate communications and a longtime supporter of the weekly and touring series that make up the NASCAR Developmental Series.
The Index was designed in the off season as an opportunity to compare the top drivers from the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series all the way up to the NASCAR K&N Pro Series. It will also encompass drivers from the NASCAR Mexico Series, NASCAR Canadian Tire Series, NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour and NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour.
In addition to Christopher, Virginia asphalt Late Model driver Philip Morris (March), Paulie Harraka of the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West (April), Christopher (May), Bobby Santos of the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour (June), Rocco (July) and Holmes (August) have also earned the No. 1 position in the Index.
The panel also included media members Shawn Courchesne of the Hartford (Conn.) Courant representing the Northeast, Adam Fenwick of National Speed Sport News from the Southeast, Tim Haddock of haddockinthepaddock.blogspot.com from the West Coast, and Lewis. INDYCAR SERIES ANNOUNCES 2011 SCHEDULE
WEST ALLIS, Wis. (Sept. 10, 2010) - The return of two traditional venues and the addition of an exciting new downtown event are highlights of the 17-race 2011 IZOD IndyCar Series schedule announced Sept. 10. Series officials unveiled the 2011 event lineup at the historic Milwaukee Mile, which will return to the schedule next June. New Hampshire Motor Speedway also is back, and the inaugural street race in Baltimore joins the schedule.
In its continuing effort to offer competitors the most diverse and challenging championship in motorsports, the 2011 IZOD IndyCar Series schedule features eight oval races and nine road/street events.
Highlights of the 2011 schedule:
• The season opener will be contested March 27 on the temporary street course in St. Petersburg, Fla., as the series opens in the U.S. for the first time since 2009.
• The street course in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on May 1 will play host to the first international event of the season and serve as the lead-in race for the 100th anniversary of the Indianapolis 500.
• The Indianapolis 500 will be contested May 29, preceded by two weeks of practice and qualifications. Pole Day is May 21. The event will mark the 100th anniversary of "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing" and will include many special Centennial Era activities for fans and media.
• Texas Motor Speedway will feature dual races under the lights June 11, allowing for a weekend off following the Indianapolis 500.
•After a one-year absence, the historic Milwaukee Mile will rejoin the schedule June 19, featuring a new event promoter.
•Iowa Speedway will showcase its first IZOD IndyCar Series night race June 25.
•The IZOD IndyCar Series races at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon after a 13-year hiatus on Aug. 14. New Hampshire played host to annual Indy-style events from 1992-98.
•The inaugural race in Baltimore, which incorporates the Inner Harbor, will be on a series-designed street circuit Sept. 4.
• The 12th IZOD IndyCar Series race at Kentucky Speedway shifts from Labor Day weekend to Oct. 2.
• The season finale race, which will take place on an oval, will be announced at a later date.
"It was important that the IZOD IndyCar Series continue to strike a balance between ovals and non-ovals to maintain our claim to the most diverse racing schedule in the world," said Randy Bernard, chief executive officer, IZOD IndyCar Series. "We want to have the best drivers in the world, and it's important that our schedule truly challenges the best through short ovals, speedways, temporary circuits and road courses."
Auto racing at The Milwaukee Mile debuted Sept. 11, 1903, when William Jones of Chicago won a five-lap speed contest. It has played host to auto racing every year since. The Milwaukee Mile first staged Indy car races in 1933.
"As tomorrow marks the 107th anniversary of the first race ever held at The Milwaukee Mile, it is only appropriate that we hold our 2011 schedule unveiling at this facility today," Bernard said. "We all appreciate the heritage and legacy of this sport while looking at all the new opportunities we have to grow.
"IndyCar is entering a new and exciting era. Fortunately, this brings opportunities with new venues and promoters that are fully aligned with our strategy moving forward. We are committed to working with our partners and listening to our fans about what they want as we do what is in the best interest of the sport.
"The Milwaukee Mile is an important track in the heritage and legacy of open-wheel racing in the U.S. The fans have been passionate about seeing it return to the schedule so we're pleased we could deliver it."
AB Promotions -- a joint venture between Avocado Motorsports Marketing and BMG Event Productions - will manage and promote the event for 2011. Avocado, a Carmel, Ind.-based company, also has a tie with The Mile - managing director Chris McGrath's father, Richard, was a longtime general manager of the racetrack. AB Promotions will use tiered pricing for the 40,000-seat venue, and it will work closely with state government and business leaders and the Wisconsin State Fair Park Board on promotional activities and sponsorship opportunities.
"We are also optimistic about continuing the efforts in subsequent years, so we are highly driven to make this a successful and enjoyable event for all parties involved," said McGrath, who noted the company has negotiated with the Wisconsin State Fair Park Board and the IZOD IndyCar Series to secure a long-term agreement.
"We recognize the challenges The Milwaukee Mile has experienced in recent years," he said. "We're certain that we can deliver an exciting event weekend using a simple, financially well-grounded approach. We want to be back for 2012, building an even higher-value event on the solid foundation of success established in 2011."
BMG Event Productions, which this year has overseen the successful IZOD "Race to the Party" promotion, will handle all aspects of event management, including facilities and equipment oversight and operation, as well as logistics for all associated entertainment and activities.
The 2011 IZOD IndyCar Series television schedule will be announced at a later date. The 2011 Firestone Indy Lights schedule will be announced in the immediate future.

Not racing but.... a very good cause
Following up on the post yesterday about Canadian racer Steve Arpin going with a pink theme for this weekend's ARCA race in Toledo, OH, in support of raising funds to fight breast cancer... I'd like to post something about my wife Melody.
Starting tomorrow - and for the second year in a row - she's taking part in the Toronto edition of the Weekend to End Womens' Cancers walk, which will take her and her Cosmic Girls teammates through the city for a total of 60 km on Saturday and Sunday.
Won't go into full detail here, but more than a decade ago, she was diagnosed with Stage 4 Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, so the fact that she can participate in the walk is very special to all of us. Among other things, she is walking proof of the great things being done by the doctors and researchers at Sunnybrook and Princess Margaret hospitals.

Race 101 offers race driver scholarships for second year; Applications now open for deserving racers from the US and Canada
September 9, 2010, DENVER, NC - RACE 101 (Research, Analyze, Consult, Educate 1 on 1) is now accepting applications from scholarship hopefuls for 2011. The educational program that drew great reviews with its inaugural 2010 class is ready for a dynamic 2011 group.

Respected motorsports industry professionals Blanchard, Anna Marie Strawhand, and Adam Ross make up the teaching faculty of RACE 101.
“Anyone can make empty promises of stardom for a hefty price,” said Blanchard. “We believe we offer a greater service by providing sound fundamentals a young racer needs to advance his or her career.”
The inaugural class features students from the United States and Canada ranging in age from 14 years old to 21 years old. The class includes racers from both asphalt and dirt; open wheel and full fendered race cars.
“Our biggest reward has been the success of our students,” said PR Director and Instructor Annamarie Strawhand. “Our students came from diverse backgrounds, and every one of them has excelled and some even advanced divisions this year.”
From rookie championships to new sponsorship agreements, the RACE 101 class of 2010 has paved the way for the 2011 group with high hopes.
“We were blessed with an eager class this year,” said RACE 101 Canada’s Adam Ross. “They will be wonderful mentors to the next group, and they’re racing proof that knowledge and confidence is the best tools we can offer young racers.”
Tony Blanchard is particularly well known for his work with Joey Logano as crew chief for Joe Gibbs Development in the USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series. Blanchard’s principle for Race 101 is quality, not quantity. He plans to work yearly with selected drivers, and give them each 'one on one' attention.
Blanchard's mission is to improve the sport of auto racing across the board by educating drivers in their area of need. Blanchard wants to make it clear that this scholarship program is not based on a driver’s financial status, and it is not a ‘driver development’ program.
“We do not promise any stardom in racing,” Says Blanchard. “We are here to educate, plain and simple. You cannot build a driver by renting a car a showing up at the track. One on one mentoring is crucial to a driver’s success. With this program the drivers will get that mentoring.” He continues, “We also work with the parents of the younger drivers so they fully understand what to realistically expect for their kids from the sport.”
Race 101 also differed with an international approach. Blanchard recognized a great deal of talent in Canada. The partnership with Ross helped introduce the program to deserving Canadian drivers creating opportunities that previously did not exist. Adam Ross is the voice of the Nascar Canadian Tire Series, and he is co-owner of motorsports businesses Dirt Track Digest and Stealth Racewear.
“It was exciting to introduce this program to Canadians,” says Ross. “I have never seen anyone with Tony’s passion for discovering talent and developing their ability to advance. The program makes sense, and any young aspiring driver will benefit from Race 101.”
Drivers can apply online, and ten final scholarship recipients will be awarded a full year with the educational program in 2011, which will include seat time in RACE 101’s super late model program race cars. Out of those ten drivers, one will earn a ride in the RACE 101 program car for the 2012 in actual late model competition.
There is no cost to apply. A total of 20 drivers will be accepted into the program, 10 drivers will be awarded a scholarship that will cover a major portion of the yearly tuition cost. The remaining 10 drivers will have the option to attend the program through paid tuition. Drivers must be between the ages of 12-28, and currently/actively racing for the evaluation process. The scholarship is open to drivers from the Continental U.S. and Canada.
The RACE 101 Driver Scholarship Program currently also has opportunities for Canadian sponsors, partners, and scholarship donors. Current RACE 101 partners include; McGunegill Engine Performance, Stealth Racewear, Dirt Track Digest, SponsorEdge.com, Drive-In Webdesign and Marketing, Innovative Safety Products, Victory Circle Communications, Performance Analysis, Race City Race Cars, and Volusia County Race Cars. Affiliations Include; Hickory Motor Speedway, CRA, PASS North and South Tour, the Annual Driver Advancement Marketing Summit, and the North Carolina Motorsports Association.
The RACE 101 Late model program cars are utilized as a teaching tool for these students, as well as a venue to represent RACE 101's sponsors and partners. Students are learning how to properly represent these sponsors and interact with the media and fans, as well as learning the mechanical and driving side of the program.

SCOTIA SPEEDWORLD: To crown five champions during season finale weekend
HALIFAX, NS - Scotia Speedworld will host five Championship races this Friday and Saturday as part of Season Finale Weekend. After an incredible season of racing the Weekly Racing Series will crown Champions in four divisions Friday night under the lights. The CARQUEST Pro Stock Tour will follow suit on Saturday afternoon at the Season Finale Parts for Trucks 200. Friday night will see the final checkers wave for the Hydraulics Plus Bandolero cars, Legends, Sportsman and Trucks. Contenders in all four divisions will go to battle for the final points of the season at 7:00pm. Saturday at 4:00pm the stars of the CARQUEST Pro Stock Tour will go head to head for the final time this season and after 200 laps the 2010 Pro Stock Champion will be crowned.
The Sportsman Division battle is down to Colby Smith of Cape Sable Island and Mike Alexander of Cole Harbour. Alexander has already clinched the Debbie Hallahan Memorial Rookie of the Year Award, but would like nothing more than to take home his first feature win at the Season Finale. Smith, with three feature wins this season, holds a 31 point advantage over the rookie heading into Friday night.
Six drivers have a mathematical chance at the 2010 Legends title heading into the final race on Friday. The top six drivers are separated by only 35 markers. Paul Blenkorn of Truro is the current leader with 885 points; Blenkhorn holds a slim 14 point margin over Steve Pye of Lantz who has 871 points. Just ten markers behind Pye is Truro’s Bruce Johnston with 861 points. Justin MacNeill (Bedford), Matt Moore (Falmouth) and Jeff Atkinson (Port Latour) are also still in the running. Every heat race and feature lap will count for these six drivers as they try to become the 2010 Legends Champion.
The rookie Truck division is nearing the completion of its first season. The top two truckers have eight points between them heading into Finale Friday. Gordon Ritchie of Antrim currently sits atop the standing with 1047 points, followed by JP Arsenault of Church Point with 1039. The Truck Championship is set to come down to the final laps of the final race of the season. Not bad for a rookie!
The Hydraulics Plus Bandolero division Championship is within Cole Butcher’s sight. The Porter’s lake driver has had an outstanding season with eight feature wins. Butcher, with 1069 points, holds a seventeen point lead over Emily Meehan of Rawdon who has 1052. Bucther needs only a decent night to take home the crown. When the green flag waves on Friday Cole’s brother Jarrett will lock himself into third position and all other drivers in the division will be eliminated from Championship contention.
On Saturday, the CARQUEST Maritime Pro Stock Tour takes the track with six drivers mathematically involved in the championship hunt. Targa Newfoundland 2010 provides a natural extension to the current US based motorsports program that was revealed late 2009. Kia Motors America revealed its US motorsports program by teaming up with the Kinetic Group to build and campaign two Forte Koups in the 2010 Grand-Am KONI Sports Car Challenge Series in the Street Tuner (ST) class. For the second time in less than a month, Forte Koups are back on the road competing in Canada. On August 13-15 at the Grand Prix de Trois-Rivières both Team Kinetic Koups made a stop at the tour.
The 2010 Forte Koup has been entered into the Modern Division of Targa driven by Adam Hill who originally hails from Perth Austrailia and now calls Vancouver home and Mark Kostick of Edmonton Alberta. Both competitors are competing under the banner for Team Wishful Thinking as part of a partnership to raise $100,000 for the Children’s Wish Foundation. Both Kostick and Hill partnered with Kia Canada for this cause.
Kia dealers across Canada have joined the fundraising effort by committing a portion of the proceeds of each vehicle sold between August 16 and September 18, 2010. “Kia Canada retailers across Canada are behind us on this endeavor” said Mark Kostick. “They want to see the car perform well and understand that the Children’s Wish Foundation is a great charity”.
The 2010 Forte Koup finished in ‘racing red’ was donated by Kia Canada for the 2010 Targa Newfoundland rally. Sherwood Kia in Edmonton, Alberta modified the vehicle to make it ‘rally ready’ for specific class. The new 2.4-litre Forte Koup promises to uphold the family tradition, with a mix of power, handling and durability ideally suited to the rigors of a week of competition.
After competing in Targa, the vehicle will tour the vast majority of autoshows in Canada and will be located in the brand new Kia Canada display for the 2011 autoshow circuit. In early spring 2011, the vehicle will be auctioned-off and all proceeds will be donated to The Children’s Wish Foundation.
Kia was among the earliest corporate supporters of Targa, fielding a then-new Kia Rio for the media team of auto writer Bob English and local radio personality Ken Ash in the inaugural Targa Newfoundland in 2002. Over the next three years, Kia cars won class honours for the company several times.

ARCA: Canadian Steve Arpin and team to wear pink in Toledo
CORNELIUS, N.C. – When Canadian racer Steve Arpin heads to Toledo Speedway for this weekend’s Northwest Ohio Ford Dealers 200, he’ll be showing off the team’s new colors...in pink!
“Supporting breast cancer research is something very personal to the entire Mike’s Hard Lemonade Co. and we’re really honored to be a part of the mike’s hard lemonade ‘Pink’ program,” said Arpin. “It gives us a chance to bring awareness and support to those affected by breast cancer.”
“The fight against breast cancer is one that's very personal to us at Mike's,” said Philip W. O’Neil, President of Mike’s Hard Lemonade Co. “Which is why we're supporting The Breast Cancer Research Foundation in memory of Jacqueline S., a part of the Mike's family since we were founded and a really great woman who left us way too soon.”
As a tribute to their long-time colleague, the company made a $250,000 donation to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation in her memory last year....a contribution Mike’s has pledged to repeat in 2010.

Canadian Motor Speedway: A big step forward
INSIDE TRACK EXCLUSIVE: On Tuesday, Sept. 7, Fort Erie (ON) City Planning Committee gave unanimous approval to amend the zoning to allow the proposed Canadian Motor Speedway (CMS), which is to be located adjacent to the QEW Highway, near the Canadian border town. All that is left is for the group to address the few remaining appeals related to the project, at the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) level, and provide further details on some of the engineering studies previously submitted.
Project Director & Partner Azhar Mohammad told Inside Track that with the Ft. Erie council vote, "a huge, huge milestone has been achieved."
On Monday, Sept. 13, Ft. Erie will enact the zoning by-law and after that, according to Mohammad, things will start to proceed in terms of the process of building a world-class motorsports complex on Canadian soil, with an eye to opening in 2012.
"There is a lot of work to do with respect to Site Plan approval and the actual construction start," continued Mohammad, "but it's a process now; there are no more gray areas. Jeff Gordon and our entire team want to thank the millions of fans who have stuck with us throughout the process and we look forward to delivering something exceptional for them soon."

Kawartha Speedway: Hey Buddy, Can you Spare $3,000.00
FRASERVILLE, ON - An old saying tells us ‘good things come to those who wait’. Thanks to Mother Nature, fans of Kawartha Speedway’s NAPA Auto Parts ACT Late Models have had to wait more than 3 months to see one of the track’s marquee events. Originally scheduled for Friday, July 9th the show was delayed by heavy rains and thunderstorms and will be made-up Friday, September 10th. General Manager and Promoter Derek Lynch says based on the way the division has run during the 2010 season, fans are in for an exciting race.
“A lot of track operators would like to be in the position we’ve been in all season,” said Lynch. ‘There have been more than 30 drivers in our premier division who’ve made at least 1 start in a main event. If you look at our point standings, there is only a difference of 200 markers between first and tenth. The top 3 runners are just 32 points apart. With 150 laps of racing in 3 segments and the payoff we’ll hand out at the end of the night, anything can happen.”
Casual conversation throughout Kawartha’s pit area reveals that some drivers have been planning their race day strategy for quite a while. Barrie, Ontario’s Sean ‘the Barbarian’ Cronan – who currently sits 12th in late model points – started making notes as soon as the 2010 schedule was made public.
“I think we’ll run the first segment like we do a regular Friday night feature,” said the 25 year-old, second year late model racer. “From there, we’ll get a chance to see how the car feels and the break between each 50 lapper will allow us to make some changes and be ready for the money run. In a perfect world, we’ll come off the 4th turn 3 wide on the last lap. I’d be on the outside – just inches from the wall – and take the win by a fender at the line.”
In addition to the 150 lap Summer Sizzler for the late models, the Friday, September 10th event will also feature action for the Hasiuk Trailer and Container Rental Mini Stocks and Better Carpet Thunder Cars. Fans will also get their only chance of 2010 to see the Ontario Pro Challenge racers tackle the 3/8th mile Fraserville, Ontario oval. Merrittville Speedway: Triple Header Finale Weekend Preview
Thorold, Ontario (September 7) The 59th Season Finale at Merrittville Speedway is upon us and with it comes quite an array of events that make up the J&S Heating and Air Conditioning Weekend that kicks off Friday September 10th and concludes Sunday September 12th.
While the tripleheader is anchored by the two day International Modified Lite Championship Weekend for Classic and Modified Lite-style Dwarf Cars, also in the spotlight are the 4 Cylinder Cars … and Trucks on the Opening Night.

Rounding out Friday Night’s events is a return visit from the Southern Ontario Sprints with their 15th season Points Race winding up. Glenn Styres currently leads the standings with the top 5 including Tyler Rand, Keith Dempster, Adam West and rookie Jim Munsie.
Saturday Night’s program is the Sportsman Super DIRTcar Series with a 50 lap Event expected to draw top Sportsman Teams from across the Northeast. Merrittville’s own Ryan Susice sits atop the standings with a 24 point lead.
The 59th Season comes to a close in a Sunday Afternoon Tradition with Merrittville Motorized Mayhem.
The Grantham Lions Ironman Enduro Series accelerated by Niagara College takes on a new format however in 2010 with qualifying heats setting up the field for the 100 lap Enduro. The annual Ladies Race will return with the afternoon closing with Small and Big Car Demolition Derbies.
“It’s quite an exciting end to our 59th season,” reveals GM Erica Bicknell, “race fans won’t want to miss a night …. There’s no other event that draws such a diverse field of Classics and Modified Lites … the Street Stocks also put on quite a show as do the Sprint Cars and Sportsman and then Sunday … you’ve never seen anything like it … the Enduro is like a traffic jam on the QEW … only with no rules.”
The 11th Annual Modified Lite International Championship for Classics and Mod Lites attracts some of the best Classic and Mod Lite Drivers from across the United States - the States of Texas, South Carolina, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, New York, Georgia, Ohio and others have been represented over the years.
The invaders of course will challenge Merrittville Speedway’s regular New York Dwarf Car Association (NYDCA) J&S Heating and Air Conditioning Modified Lite Members that compete weekly at the Thorold track.
11 years ago, Jim Varble, the then president of the NYDCA, set the groundwork for a special night to showcase the Classic Division each fall.
When Lee Webber won two Merrittville Speedway Points Championships, he also served as treasurer of the club and his wife Rose Marie was an integral part of both as well. Rose Marie was diagnosed with cancer a little more than 5 years ago and after a courageous battle, succumbed to the disease.
Fellow driver Wally Billing was a good friend of both Lee and Rose and wanted to honor Rose by making the International Race a memorial to her and for 10 years her memory was celebrated.
The mix of Mod Lites and Classics will compete in 25 lap Events Friday and Saturday Nights.
“We’re proud to host this event that will pit the best Street Stockers from across Ontario against the top teams from New York State,” boasts Bicknell, “it will definitely compliment the Classic and Mod Lite teams that visit us as well … and with the Sportsmen Super DIRT Series and the Southern Ontario Sprints … the pit area will be at capacity at each event.”
Beginning Friday, there is free camping and parking all weekend long.
Showtime Friday and Saturday Nights is at 7:00 after the gates open at 5:30. For Sunday’s Enduro – the Grandstand opens at 12:00 Noon.

Maritime Pro Stock Tour: Parts for Trucks 200 to determine champion
(Halifax NS, September 7, 2010) - The CARQUEST Pro Stock Tour Championship battle comes to a head this Saturday at the Season Finale Parts for Trucks 200. After 10 races, 57 drivers, four tracks in three provinces it all comes down to the final event of the season.
On Saturday afternoon at Scotia Speedworld someone will be crowned the 2010 CARQUEST Pro Stock Tour Champion, a prestigious title that every stock car driver wants on his racing resume. To add some additional drama to the day, NASCAR legend Ken Schrader will go head to head with the Pro Stocks at the 3/10 mile oval, Schrader will be driving the #10 Parts for Trucks sponsored Chevrolet. Grandstands open at 1:00pm; Atlantic Tiltload Time Trials will begin at 3:10pm with racing action slated to start at 4:00pm.
Mathematically six drivers are in contention for the Championship; however four drivers have emerged as the real contenders. Fredericton NB’s Shawn Tucker is the current points leader and holds a slim 16 point margin over his closest competitor and reigning Champion Shawn Turple of Enfield NS. Timberlea NS’s Wayne Smith is 29 points behind Tucker and Donald Chisholm of Antigonish NS is just 3 markers behind Smith.
Chisholm may be the dark horse of the four contenders as the three drivers ahead of him are all former or reigning CARQUEST Pro Stock Tour Champions. These drivers will be battling a talented field of 26 drivers in an attempt to lead as many laps as possible and gain maximum points in order to clinch the elusive and illustrious title…and of course the $10,000.00 Champions cheque.

Kia returns to Targa Newfoundland with Forte Koup and a special wish
ST. JOHN’S (September 7, 2010) – Nine years after a young Kia Canada Inc. dipped a tentative toe into Canada’s motorsport waters, the company returns to Canadian motorsports and Targa Newfoundland 2010 with a dramatic new Forte Koup, an ambitious new commitment and a new partner with a big wish.
A new 2010 Kia Forte Koup will be co-driven by Adam Hill, who originally hails from Perth, Australia, and now calls Vancouver home, and Mark Kostick of Edmonton. The Koup has been entered in the Modern Division of Targa and will carry the banner for Team Wishful Thinking as part of a partnership to raise $100,000 for the Children’s Wish Foundation.
“Kia Canada is very excited to utilize the 2010 Targa Newfoundland as its official debut for motorsports in Canada,” said Jack Sulymka, public relations manager of Kia Canada Inc. “You couldn’t ask for a better venue for our return and we expect the Koup to turn a few heads.”
Both drivers are affiliated with Kia Canada: Kostick is the General Manager at Sherwood Kia in Edmonton and Hill is Chief Executive Officer of Omni Corporation, provider of Kia Canada extended warranties.
Kia dealers across Canada have joined the fundraising effort by committing a portion of the proceeds of each vehicle sold between August 16 and September 18, 2010.
“Kia Canada retailers across Canada are squarely behind us on this endeavour,” said Kostick. “They understand that the Children’s Wish Foundation is a great charity and want to see the car perform well.”
The Forte Koup, finished in racing red, was donated by Kia Canada for the rally. Sherwood Kia modified the vehicle to make it rally-ready for the class. The new 2.4-litre Forte Koup promises performance to match its dramatic looks, with a mix of power, handling and durability ideally suited to the rigors of a week of competition.
After the competing in Targa, the vehicle will tour the vast majority of auto shows in Canada and will be located in the new Kia Canada auto show display. In early spring, 2011, the vehicle will be auctioned-off and all proceeds will be donated to The Children’s Wish Foundation.
Kia was among the earliest corporate supporters of Targa, fielding a then-new Kia Rio for the media team of auto writer Bob English and local radio personality Ken Ash in the inaugural Targa Newfoundland in 2002. Over the next three years, Kia cars won class honours for the company several times.

Antoine L’Estage and Nathalie Richard Eyeing the Victory and a New Record
Montréal (Québec), September 7, 2010.– After a two-month break in the Canadian Rally Championship calendar, that was put to good use by Antoine L’Estage and Nathalie Richard as they became the 2010 Rally America Champions and won a bronze medal at the popular ESPN Summer X Games, the Rockstar Energy Drink Royal Group team will be back in competition this weekend for the Rallye Défi (September 10 & 11), round four of six in the Canadian championship. The Quebec team from St-Jean-sur-Richelieu has already won the Rallye Défi on four separate occasions and a victory this weekend would be a new record for this particular event.
Victorious at the Rallye Défi in 2009, Antoine L’Estage and Nathalie Richard are among the heavy favourites at the wheel of their Rockstar Royal Group Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X. I’m impatiently awaiting the start of Défi, it’s our home event and last year’s win allowed us to tie John Buffum’s record. If we win again this weekend, Nathalie and I will move up into the record books as the only ones with five victories at Défi mentions Antoine L’Estage, our current standing in the championship dictates that we have to go for the victory he adds.
In preparation for the Rallye Défi, the Rockstar Royal Group team tested its Mitsubishi Evo X at the end of August, a test session that went off without a hitch. The point of our test was to put the car back to our regular rally-spec after making a few adjustments for the X Games in July. I was really happy with the car and it just reinforced my confidence heading into the rally explains Antoine, who hopes to continue the momentum after winning the Rally America title and his success at X Games. Another title up for grabs at the Rallye Défi this weekend is that of the overall North American Rally Cup. Victorious at the Rallye Défi in 2009, Antoine L’Estage and Nathalie Richard are among the heavy favourites at the wheel of their Rockstar Royal Group Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X. I’m impatiently awaiting the start of Défi, it’s our home event and last year’s win allowed us to tie John Buffum’s record. If we win again this weekend, Nathalie and I will move up into the record books as the only ones with five victories at Défi mentions Antoine L’Estage, our current standing in the championship dictates that we have to go for the victory he adds.
In preparation for the Rallye Défi, the Rockstar Royal Group team tested its Mitsubishi Evo X at the end of August, a test session that went off without a hitch. The point of our test was to put the car back to our regular rally-spec after making a few adjustments for the X Games in July. I was really happy with the car and it just reinforced my confidence heading into the rally explains Antoine, who hopes to continue the momentum after winning the Rally America title and his success at X Games. SOUTHERN ONTARIO SPRINTS: JONES JAMS AT BRIGHTON
by Tommy Goudge (September 4, 2010) - Chris Jones dominated the first night of the Southern Ontario Sprints Labour Day Classic doubleheader at Brighton Speedway on Saturday night. The win was the local driver's second career Sprint Car feature victory, the first also coming at Brighton in July. Keith Dempster finished second, while Glenn Styres claimed third and extended his points lead, as he tries to win an unprecedented fourth SOS title.
Keith Dempster and Chris Jones started the twenty lap feature on the front row, and Jones utilized the high groove to take the lead. The field was just crossing the line to complete the first lap when Doug Banks spun to a stop in turn three to bring out a caution flag. The yellow flag quickly turned red when April Wilson tangled with Dick Mahoney as the field slowed. Wilson rolled over and did enough damage to her machine to be done for the night.
Jones led on the restart, while many eyes were on August feature winner Rick Wilson, who moved from eighth to challenge for fifth in the early going. Doug Banks again brought out a caution on lap four when he stopped on the backstretch, and then went to the pit area.
Jones again led on the restart, and started to lap slower traffic on the ninth circuit. Dempster gained on Jones in traffic, but the caution flag flew again on lap eleven for debris on the front straight. Jones took off on the restart and contacted the frontstretch wall with his right rear as he crossed under the green flag, but continued on.
Lap fifteen found Rick Wilson and Dain Naida trading the fourth spot back and forth, with Wilson eventually prevailing. Jones worked traffic successfully over the last four laps and cruised to his second career win, followed by Dempster, Styres, Wilson, and Naida.
"The car felt a little funny, and I eased into the next corner and just felt it out a little bit," said Jones of his close call with the wall. "The bite was still there, the car felt ok, so I just kept trying to hit my marks."
The Brighton surface was in great shape on Saturday, and featured fast grooves both top and bottom. Jones commented on the track conditions afterwards.
"I knew the key to the race was getting a good start because I really thought the bottom was going to be the place to be tonight," said Jones. "But, it was a really nice cushion. You could put the right rear up against the cushion. I kept looking at the scoreboard and I saw it was Dempster behind me every time, so I was thinking there wasn't a lot of passing going on behind me, so if I could just hold my own and keep hitting my marks, it would be ours!"
Glenn Styres finished third on Saturday, but the finish was as good as a win for the three time SOS champ, who extended his margin in the standings to forty-four over Tyler Rand.
"I was hoping I could stay up front there for awhile," said Styres afterwards. "That 11 car got hooked up pretty good - he was out of sight, and congratulations to their team. I was trying everything, and it's just really tough. The competition is so close right now and the fans gotta love it."
Heat races for the twenty car field were claimed by Dick Mahoney, Rick Wilson, and Dain Naida, while Naida also won the Black's Transport Dash For Cash.
NOTES
- Michigan driver Dain Naida made his first visit to Brighton a successful one by winning his heat race, dash for cash, and finishing fifth in the feature.
- June feature winner Jamie Collard returned to competition on Saturday night for the first time since a crash at Ohsweken Speedway on July 30 put him out with a back injury. Collard had a solid night in his return, and claimed sixth in the feature.
- Warren Mahoney had trouble with the rear end and drive-shaft on his primary car during heat race action and switched to "Lefty", his backup car, for the feature. Warren drove from nineteenth on the grid to finish eleventh and claim Hard Charger honours, and the Stealth Racewear "Under The Radar" award.
- The SOS tour gets back to action for round eight of the fifteenth anniversary season and second night of the Labour Day Classic on Sunday, September 5 back at Brighton Speedway.
