THE DALY FLIER -- CONOR DALY AGAIN QUICKEST IN DAY TWO OF STAR MAZDA CHAMPIONSHIP PRACTICE FOR THIS WEEKEND'S ROUND 11 AT THE TIME WARNER CABLE ROAD

Elkhart Lake, WI (August 20, 2010) – As it was yesterday during a pair of 'promoter test sessions,' so it was today… with a few differences. Anders 'The Viking' Krohn, currently second in the championship battle, was quick in a morning session with a 2:07.597 (114.210 mph) in the #47 Andersen Racing / Norse Cutting & Abandonment / Trallfa / Colosseum Mazda, but in the afternoon he slid down the order to 5th with a time of 2:07.326 (114.453 mph). The morning session was curtailed by a damp fog that caused the field to be red-flagged after a few laps and sit in the pits for 10 minutes before being allowed back on track for a final 5-minute run.

And Conor Daly, currently leading the Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear points battle with five wins and seven poles, who was just 0.249 sec. behind Krohn in the morning with a lap of 2:07.846 (113.987 mph) turned up the wick on his #22 Juncos Racing / INDECK / The College Network / Merchant Services Ltd. Mazda in the afternoon session and put in a flier – 2:05.767 (115.871 mph)… more than 8/10ths of a second clear of the main surprise of the day, Californian Connor De Phillippi, who after languishing mid-pack in yesterday's sessions, was 2nd-quick with a lap of 2:06.619 (115.092 mph) in the #11 JDC Motorsports / MAZDASPEED Motorsports / Skip Barber Mazda. De Phillippi, the 2009 Skip Barber Pro Series champion, is racing in the Star Mazda Championship this season via scholarship funding provided by the unique and highly coveted MAZDASPEED Motorsports Driver Development Ladder.

"We struggled with some mechanical problems on the car yesterday, and this morning's session was worthless with the red flag for fog," said De Phillippi. "But the JDC Motorsports team found that one adjustment for this afternoon that completely transformed the car and I felt very comfortable with my new-found speed. Hopefully it will stay with us for qualifying tomorrow morning and then the race; I've raced here before in Skip Barber and I'm confident that we can have a good result."

With that sole exception, the cast of characters at the sharp end of the quicker afternoon session were the same names from yesterday; young Quebec racer Mikael Grenier (4th in the championship with one win and two poles) moved up from 11th in the morning to 3rd-fast fast in the afternoon driving the the #17 Andersen Racing / Slow Cow / April Super Flow / NAPA Auto Parts / HS Telecom / Desharnais Mazda to a lap of 2:06.669 (115.046 mph), and Texan Rusty Mitchell posted the 4th-fast time in both morning and afternoon sessions, the quickest being a 2.07.320 (114.458 mph) in the second outing.

Among the Experts (drivers 30 – 44) and Master (45 and older) Series drivers, series veteran Gerry Kraut found a setup more to his liking today and posted a lap of 2:09.703 (112.355 mph) in the #55 JDC Motorsports / Dougherty & Co. / Dougherty Funding LLC Mazda to set the 14th-fast time in the afternoon. Kraut, currently 2nd in the Master Series championship battle with three in-class wins is the co-owner of the championship-winning JDC Motorsports team. Quickest among the Experts was Texan J.W. Roberts, who currently leads his championship with seven in-class wins, turning a lap of 2:11.240 (more than two seconds quicker than his morning time) in the #65 Team GDT / General Data Tech Mazda. Roberts is the owner of Team GDT and swept the honors last weekend at Trois-Rivieres when his team scored their first-ever overall race win with Alex Ardoin and won both the Expert (Roberts) and Master (Carlos Conde) races.

On-track activities for the 2010 Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear continue tomorrow, Saturday, August 21, with an 8:40 - 9:25 am qualifying session. This will set the grid for the Series' traditional standing start, scheduled to get the green light at 1:00pm for the a scheduled 45-minute event.

This is the second event of a 3-race, back-to-back 'road trip' for drivers and teams in the Star Mazda Championship. The next event, Round 12 at MOBIL1 Presents the Grand Prix of Mosport will take the green at 1:15 pm Saturday, August 28. The series' finale, also with ALMS at the Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta, will take place October 1.

Ernie Saxton: Sponsors want more for their money these days

LANGHORNE, PA - Putting the name of a business on the race car is not enough to get them to cough up serious sponsorship money these days. Actually that type of sponsorship has not worked successfully for businesses in quite a while. More and more businesses are refusing to cough up sponsorship dollars just to see the car go racing by with their name on it.

“In order to get a business interested in sponsoring a race car these days takes planning and serious effort,” said Ernie Saxton, considered by many to be an expert when it comes to sponsorship in motorsports. “Businesses want to see a serious return on their sponsorship investment and that means racers have to be in a position to provide a sponsorship package that produces significant results, results that a business can actually see in their sales.”

Saxton, publisher of the newsletter Motorsports Sponsorship Marketing News (since 1985), is offering a ready to use sponsorship proposal that is basically ready to go once some personalization has been added. Even the cover letter, an important marketing tool that is often forgotten, is included.

In fact Saxton has a package that includes an actual proposal, a CD titled “How to Write a Winning Proposal” by Milt Gedo, a subscription to Motorsports Sponsorship Marketing News (loaded with information on how to be successful at sponsorship marketing) and his famous “Hodgepodge of Sponsorship Helps and Tips.” The total price for all the items would total close to $250. The package is now ready to ship for just $149.95 plus $10 to cover shipping and handling.

To order the package telephone Ernie Saxton at 215.752.7797. Visa, Mastercard and American Express is accepted. Saxton also offers all the items separately. Check out his website at www.saxtonsponsormarket.com. Sponsorship marketing articles, penned by Saxton, a veteran of more than 40 years in sponsorship marketing, can be found in National Dragster, Late Model Racer magazine, Circle Track and other publications.

Canadian Steve Arpin Tops Afternoon as Goess Takes Day at ARCA Chicagoland Test

JOLIET, IL - Steve Arpin drove the No. 55 Mike's Hard Lemonade Toyota to the fastest lap in the afternoon session of ARCA Racing Series presented by RE/MAX and Menards testing at the 1.5-mile Chicagoland Speedway, but Craig Goess's morning speed held up as the day's fastest. 19 drivers and 20 cars participated.

Arpin drove the Venturini Motorsports Toyota to his best of 21 afternoon laps in 30.829 seconds (175.160 mph), falling just short of Goess's 30.807-second (175.285 mph) morning effort in the No. 81 Greenville Toyota of N.C. Toyota for Eddie Sharp Racing.

Mikey Kile, who had finished second in the opening test session, posted the afternoon's second-fastest time, at 30.922 seconds (174.633 mph) - an improvement of 0.145 second from the morning. Kile's effort listed third on the day's overall chart.

Chad McCumbee and Grant Enfinger filled out the top five for the afternoon.

Justin Marks, who was working out two different cars for Win-Tron Racing, brushed the wall at the exit of Turn 2.

The ARCA Racing Series races at Chicagoland Speedway on Friday, August 27, but will first run on the dirt of the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield in Sunday's Allen Crowe 100.

The 100-lap, 100-mile Allen Crowe 100 is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Central (2 Eastern) on Sunday, August 22, with live timing and scoring and live audio coverage presented by ARCA Nation at ARCARacing.com.

The lone practice is scheduled for 9 a.m. Central, with Menards Pole Qualifying presented by Ansell - which has produced 11 different pole winners in 12 qualifying sessions this season - taking place at 11 a.m. Live audio coverage and live timing and scoring of all events will be available on ARCARacing.com.

The ARCA Racing Series presented by RE/MAX and Menards features 20 events at 17 tracks on its 2010 schedule. The series has crowned an ARCA national champion each year since its inaugural season in 1953, and has toured over 200 racetracks in 28 states since its inception. The series tests the abilities of drivers and race teams over the most diverse schedule of stock car racing events in the world, annually visiting tracks ranging from 0.4 mile to 2.66 miles in length, on both paved and dirt surfaces as well as left- and right-turn street and road courses.

Founded by John Marcum in 1953 in Toledo, Ohio, the Automobile Racing Club of America (ARCA) is recognized among the leading sanctioning bodies in the country. Closing in on completing its sixth decade after hundreds of thousands of miles of racing, ARCA administers over 100 race events each season in two professional touring series and local weekly events.

CANADIAN LEGENDS OF MOSPORT TO BE HONOURED AT MOBIL 1 GP OF MOSPORT WEEKEND

Six Canadian Hall Of Fame Drivers To Help Celebrate Mosport's 50th Anniversary Season And Meet Race Fans

(BOWMANVILLE, ON - August 18, 2010) Their names are memorable, their accomplishments are great, their ties to Mosport are unmistakable and next weekend, six Canadian Legends of Mosport will be on hand as part of Mosport's 50th anniversary celebration.

The circuit will pay tribute to these Canadian road racing stars from Mosport's storied past, recognizing their achievements and providing fans with an opportunity to meet them and learn about their careers.

The Legends taking part in the festivities are all members of the Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame; Bill Brack, Eppie Wietzes, Ludwig Heimrath Sr., Craig Hill, Horst Kroll and Ross de St. Croix.

On Saturday, the Legends will participate in Q & A sessions with fans and will be followed by autograph sessions. On race day Sunday, the Hall of Famers will again hold an autograph session and then participate in the Mobil 1 presents The Grand Prix of Mosport Opening Ceremonies.

There will be a wide-array of historic race cars on display including Kroll's Can-Am Frisbee and Brack's 59/69 Lotus.

Brack is the only Canadian driver to have won three Canadian Driving Championships and more impressive, he did it in consecutive years, 1973-1975. To accomplish this feat, Brack had to defeat future Grand Prix champions and a young up-and-coming star by the name of Gilles Villeneuve. To top it off, Brack also won championships in both Formula Atlantic and Canadian Touring Car.

Inducted into the Canadian Motorsports Hall of Fame in 1993, Wietzes won two Canadian Driving Championships, in 1969 and 1970. He won in everything he drove including a Sunbeam Alpine, Cornstock Mustangs, GT 40's and later the very quick F5000.

Heimrath Sr. boasts a very impressive resume. He won the first Canadian Sports Car Racing Championship (later renamed the Canadian Driving Championship) in 1961 and again in 1964. He finished in the runner-up spot in '62, '63 and '65. Heimrath Sr. was also the second Canadian ever to compete in Formula 1 and twice won the SCCA Trans-Am championship. An expert long distance racer is still active today, competing in endurance races.

In a driving career that spanned nearly 40 years, Hill was successful in almost every type of race car that he got behind the wheel of, from midgets to super-modifieds, sports car and open-wheeled formula cars. In 1973 and '74, Hill teamed up with Heimrath Sr. to win the Sundown Grand Prix.

Kroll is a decorated road-racer having won the Canadian Driving Championship in 1968 in a Kelly Porsche, the same car that he later beat the factory Porsche's in a United States Automobile Club (USAC) race atWatkins Glen. Kroll made the move into Can-Am, winning the championship in 1986.

Having driven everything from MG's to the ex-Miss Whiz Lola, de St. Croix enjoyed great success in everything that he ever drove. He also contributed greatly to the sport as the president of the Canadian Automobile Sports Club (CASC) and the Montreal Motor Racing Club.

A full schedule of activities will be posted online at
www.mosport.com and on-site during race weekend.

SPEEDWAY 660: DQ Kids Day & Street Stock 75

Fredericton N.B. - This Saturday August 21, 2010, Speedway 660 will host a full day of excitement. Fans won't just see excitement on the track, but the young races fans will have double the excitement with the rescheduled Kids Day festivities. DQ has hopped on board for another year with Speedway 660 to sponsor the kid's day festivities.

The evening's events will begin with an "In-the-Pits" pre-race autograph session from 6pm-7pm, where kids get to meet, have pictures taken and get autographs from their favourite drivers. This is a chance for the young race fans to talk to the drivers as they are not permitted to go in the pit area under the age of 16 during the races. The drivers especially look forward to the opportunity of meeting their race fans and sign autographs for the kids. This is a chance for the drivers to interact with their youngest fans for an extended period prior to the race. The drivers rarely get to leave the pit area as they are usually busy with pre-race meetings and the preparing their cars for the night's events.

Some of the festivities will be the ever so popular candy scramble on the front stretch during intermission. This will give the youngsters an opportunity to fill their sweet tooth for the evening. Our Speedway 660 mascot Speedway the Moose, will also be on hand to meet and greet with the fans. Speedway has been a hit with the race faces each weekend. So if you see Speedway, don't hesitate to give him a high five.

Aside from the DQ Kids Day festivities, the Leisure Family RV.com Street Stock will be running a 75 lap event that was rescheduled from last weekend. This will be the first big race for the Street Stocks, and they will get a chance to strut their stuff in a long race. Watch the #54 of Rick Cashol as he is the point's leader in our Street Stock division at the moment, but Peter Gaddess, #20 and Mike Francis, #23 are hot on his tail. Also, the Martin's Home Heating Sportsman, Coastal Blending and Packaging Pro Stock, the 4 CYL division and the Bandolero division will be on track racing in the weekly points' series. The point's season is winding down, with only one week left after this one.

In the Martins Home Heating sportsman division keep your eyes on the #1 of Michael Banks and the #85 of Ken MacKenzie as there is only 3 points between them. Pro Stock drivers Greg Fahey #20 and Chris Duncan #97 are in a point's battle as well in the Coastal Blending & Packaging division. Our new divisions are also a must to see. The 4CYL division is drawing new cars each week; Mike Weagle #60 of Peticodiac is currently leading the points, with local driver Kevin Dunster #16 running in second. Our youngest racers are driving in the Bandoleros. These young racers are between the ages of 9 – 15 and they put on a great show.

Race fans; be sure to bring your cameras and autograph books. It will be a night of racing that you won't want to miss.

It's sure to be an exciting evening with lots of Kids day festivities and racing action. So come on out to the Geary Woods this weekend and check out Speedway 660 for some WicKID Family Fun!

Hinchcliffe Heads to Infineon

Toronto, Ontario (August 19, 2010) – California's Infineon Raceway plays host to Round 10 of the 2010 Firestone Indy Lights Series this weekend, Friday 20th – Sunday 22nd August, with Canadian James Hinchcliffe looking to claim the glory on the schedule's final road-course outing.

Success at the undulating circuit, located in the Sonoma Valley outside of San Francisco, would deliver Hinchcliffe's third victory of the season, having previously triumphed at Long Beach and Edmonton. More importantly for the driver of the #2 Team Moore Racing entry, it would help eradicate the memory of a frustrating outing at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course from earlier in the month when a guaranteed second place finish was wiped out with an off in the closing stages.

While James held onto his second place in the Driver Standings behind France's J.K. Vernay, Mid-Ohio winner, Martin Plowman, equaled his points haul – 'Hinch' holding the advantage with one more win than his UK rival.

Infineon Raceway holds no surprises for the 23-year-old from Toronto having raced there in Indy Lights last season and earlier in his burgeoning open-wheel career. Last year's trip netted a sixth place finish for James having initially qualified in fifth. Qualifying has been the key to success in virtually all of this season's races with James one of the stand-outs in the Saturday session bagging a total of six front-row starts including four pole positions.

"I'm looking forward to a good one this weekend," stated James having been in San Francisco since earlier this week. "I've won here in the past in other series and I know we have a fast car to take on this kind of circuit. We were fast at the beginning of the month at Mid-Ohio, I can't see that changing for Infineon.

"We've got three races in the next three weeks so it's important we get some good momentum going now to carry into the oval races. Hopefully we can make a bit of a dent into J.K. Vernay's lead. It would be good to take the final road course win of the season just to put a stamp on that side of the series. The momentum would be an advantage to the whole team heading to Chicago and a return to ovals to close the year. We definitely want to end the season on a high and the homestretch is in sight!"

2010 Top-5 Driver Standings (R9/13): 1st Vernay (FRA) – 359pts, 2nd HINCHCLIFFE (CAN) – 306pts, 3rd Plowman (GBR) – 306pts, 4th Kimball (USA) – 287pts, 5th Saavedra (COL) – 269pts

(Halifax, NS, August 18, 2010) The CARQUEST Pro Stock Tour returns to Halifax's Scotia Speedworld for the rescheduled Lucas Oil 100 this August 21. The original Lucas Oil 100 was rained out back in June and is now the Tour's third appearance this season at the 1/3 mile oval across from the Halifax Stanfield International Airport and the ninth for the regional touring series.  Canada's best stock car drivers will start the evening with qualifying for the Lucas Oil 100 in the Atlantic Tiltload Time Trials set for 5:10 pm.  Gates open at 3:00pm and tickets are available at the venue on race day.

With the season winding down, the competition is heating up! After the completion of the last three races, we have seen a different driver at the top of the heap each time. Currently sitting there now is previous Tour Champion Shawn Tucker, who is still looking for his first win of the season and eager to get it. If Fredericton's Tucker can do that this Saturday night, he will be the ninth different winner in as many races this summer. It won't be an easy feat if the home track drivers have their say. Enfield's Shawn Turple and Timberlea's Wayne Smith both know their way around Scotia Speedworld. They are also the other two drivers who have sat atop the point standings, they are previous Tour Champions, and they have won races this season. You can also expect to see a charge from Terence Bay's Craig Slaunwhite who is looking for his first win and sits in the top ten.

Another driver that has been closing the gap and is trying to make 2010 a championship season is Brudenell's Jonathan Hicken. Hicken got his first win of his Tour career this season and is looking to be the first driver to win twice this season. Last weekend's winner Donald Chisholm from Antigonish will be looking to ride that momentum through this weekend to repeat. Hicken and Chisholm sit third and fourth in the standings respectively. Prince Edward Island will be sending over their troops to try to take this weekend's trophy back with them as well. Expect to see Crapaud's Kent Vincent and Springvale's Greg Proude battling up front as they too try to take home a second victory in 2010. Chris Hughes from Brackley Beach is looking for his first win and sits just behind Vincent and Proude in the points at eighth. Rounding out the top ten in points, is the leading rookie so far this season, Sydney's Jerome Kehoe. Kehoe has been running consistently in the top ten all season and is looking to perhaps get a feature win in his premiere season.

Fans will also be treated to 50 laps of amazing action from the Maritime League of Legends Tou prior to the CARQUEST Pro Stock Tour main feature, the Lucas Oil 100! Tickets for the Lucas Oil 100 are $25.00 for adults, $5.00 for youth, children 7 and under are admitted for free. Pit passes for Saturday's event are $30.00 and restricted to those 16 and over. Tickets are available at the gate on race day.

Jake Thompson TDI Cup Rounds 7 & 8 Preview

Jake Thompson prepares to tackle Road America during Rounds 7 & 8 of the TDI Cup

The Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup enters its home stretch this weekend, as Rounds 7 & 8 will take place at the historic Road America circuit in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. The 4-mile road course is the fastest track on the calendar, with competitors reaching a top speed near 210km/hr, and averaging over 150km/hr during a lap. This weekend's double header will be the second to last event in the TDI Cup season, with the final two rounds taking place in Puebla Mexico next month. Canadian racer Jake Thompson currently sits 4th in the championship hunt, a mere 20 points back of the lead, and can move to the top of the points table with a pair of strong results.

The 2009 Road America race was an eventful one for Thompson. After a strong qualifying run to 3rd place, he spun attempting a pass into corner 1, leaving him at the tail of the field. He then proceeded to pass 15 cars in 10 laps to salvage a 12th place finish. He will definitely be looking to improve on that this year, as he showed the speed to run at the front of the field on one of America's toughest circuits.

This weekend Thompson will be continuing his pledge drive to raise money for the children's charity Right To Play. Thus far the program has been a huge success as currently $51.95 has been pledged for every lap Thompson completes during the 2010 season. To date over $6800 is set to be donated to Right To Play. To find out how you can get involved please visit www.jakethompson.ca/righttoplay/.

You can follow the action all weekend long at www.jakethompson.ca, and on twitter at www.twitter.com/jakethompson19. Live timing will also be available during on track sessions at http://livetiming.net/scca/VW.
