Luke Stewart Scores Another Top Ten Finish at Brockville After Jumping to 358 Modified Division; Season Comes to and End This Weekend

When moving up to the 358 Modified division after nearly three seasons in the Sportsman division, Luke Stewart didn’t know what to expect. While still competing in Sportsman weekly at Brockville, Stewart ran three events at Can Am in the 358 Modified division earlier this season and felt comfortable right from the start, and after making his first appearance in the division a few weeks ago at Brockville and scoring an eighth place finish, Stewart and his family operated team decided to make the move full time to the 358 Modified class.

At Brockville Speedway last Saturday night, Stewart started the evening with preliminary qualifying and he started from the fifth position. After struggling a little with the handling of the car, Steward finished the race in sixth and reported to the pit area to make some changes to the car before the 30 lap main event.

“The car didn’t handle very well in the qualifier, so we are going to make some adjustment, and hopefully we can get it working better for the feature”, says Stewart before getting in the car for the feature. “Hopefully we can stay out of trouble, get some valuable experience and get another top ten finish”.

Stewart started the feature from deep in the field, lining up on the inside of row ten in the 19^th position. After taking evasive action to avoid a spin on lap four, Stewart had moved up to the 12^th position and just three laps later he was in the top ten, riding along in the ninth position. At the checkered flag, Luke finished in tenth place, posting his second consecutive top ten finish at Brockville.

“It was pretty good, we learned a lot and we accomplished or goal of being in the top ten”, says Stewart after the race. “It is a really tough field here at Brockville, so to finish in the top ten is pretty big”.

In the five events that Stewart has raced in the 358 Modified this season, he has yet to finish outside of the top ten. His best result came at Chapman’s Can Am Motorsports Park on August 5^th with a fifth place finish. He also posted finishes of ninth and tenth at Can Am to go along with his two top ten finishes at Brockville.

In order to keep his rookie status for the 2012 racing season, Stewart can only run a maximum of six races in the 358 Modified this season. The sixth race will be this Saturday night at Brockville Speedway. Stewart will be looking for another strong finish and end the season on a good note, and build some confidence going into next year.

“We are going to take the car apart after this weekend and go over it, and slowly start putting it back together for next year”, says Stewart. “We haven’t finalized all of our plans for next year yet, but we will be back in the 358 Modified somewhere”.

Numerous changes enhance drivability of popular customer racing car

MISSISSAUGA – September 2, 2011 --- For racing customers all over the world, the Porsche 911 GT3 R is extremely popular for its speed and its forgiving handling. It is exactly these characteristics that have been targeted for improvements in the 2012 model year.

Engine output has increased by 20 hp, now totaling 500 hp. Paddle shifters on the steering wheel ensure gear changes are even quicker and simpler, making it easier for racers to concentrate on braking. Moreover, the transmission electronics, featuring an automatic throttle blip control, make it almost impossible to miss a gear and over-rev the engine. A softer anti-roll bar on the front axle reduces understeer.

The power increase of the rear-mounted 4.0-litre flat-six was achieved through optimizing the intake system. The gearing of the sequential six-speed dog-type gearbox was adapted to the higher maximum output. In order to bring the power to the tarmac safely and to assist race drivers, the 911 GT3 R has featured a sophisticated traction control system, standard since the 2010 model year. The new Porsche 911 GT3 R will be delivered to teams around the world starting in November 2011. The vehicle costs 304,500 Euro plus the value added tax of respective countries. The Porsche 911 GT3 R from the 2010 and 2011 model years can be up-graded to the 2012 spec. An upgrade kit is available from Porsche Motorsport for 43,100 Euro.

The 911 GT3 R represents the mid-range of Porsche’s customer racing vehicles. The 911 GT3 Cup, as the top-selling race car in the world, serves as its basis. Ranking above the 911 GT3 R is the 911 GT3 RSR, built for GT2 racing, which competes in series like the American Le Mans Series, the Le Mans Series and at the Le Mans 24 hour race.

J.R. Fitzpatrick and Go Canada Racing Part Ways

CAMBRIDGE, ON (September 1, 2011) – Effective immediately J.R. Fitzpatrick has announced today he is no longer driving for the Go Canada Racing Team.

The Cambridge, Ontario, Canada native will continue to compete in both the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series for Fitzpatrick Motorsports and will also be back behind the wheel in the NASCAR Nationwide Series before the season is over.

“First I want to thank all the guys at the shop in Nashville for all their hard work. It’s not easy being part of a Start-up operation and they were a passionate group and a lot of fun to be around. Second, I want all of my fans to be assured that I will be making some really cool announcements about the continued development of my NASCAR career and that I can’t wait to jump behind the wheel of a Nationwide car later this season.”

Fitzpatrick is fresh off a 5th place finish in the NAPA 200 in Montreal, his 3rd top ten finish in the Nationwide series in just a handful of starts.

“I think I played a large role in helping Go Canada develop their program. We started out with disappointment at Daytona and soldiered through some rough weekends with ill-handling cars at California and Dover and a DNF at Watkins Glen but they should be in a good place moving forward. Thanks to Steve Meehan for bringing me in at the beginning to do that.”

Ohsweken Speedway: Friday Night Thunder continues Sept. 2!

School is starting next week, but summer isn’t over at Ohsweken Speedway. Friday Night Thunder continues on September 2 when Pierced Parts presents the “Labour Day Special”. The Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Cars, Lighthouse Tattoos Thunder Stocks, HRW Automotive Mini Stocks, and Pierced Parts Bombers will all be in action with championship chases winding down, along with Vintage Cars, Chain Races, and Kids Box Car Races.

CORR/PAK MERCHANDISING SPRINT CARS

The Sprint Car championship has been contested mostly by two drivers this season – Jim Huppunen of Fenwick and Tilbury driver Kyle Patrick – but Burford’s Jamie Collard can’t be counted out after two consecutive feature wins. Huppunen holds a 14 point lead over Patrick, and 39 point lead over Collard with 2 full-points events left in the Corr/Pak division season. South Dayton, NY driver Kyle Moffit, and Brantford’s Mitch Brown round out the remainder of the top 5.

LIGHTHOUSE TATTOOS THUNDER STOCKS

Phil Nyssen crossed the finish line first last Friday night, but his car did not make it through technical inspection, which handed the feature win to Caistor Centre rookie Cory Turner. Consistency has given Caledonia driver Mike Thorne a large lead over Turner in the championship standings however, as Thorne has not finished worse than 7th in any feature race this season. He holds a 109 point lead over Turner heading into the final 2 weeks of the points chase, with Caledonia’s Ryan Dinning, Cambridge driver Wyatt Van Wart, and Devin Habiuk of Port Robinson also in the top 5.

HRW AUTOMOTIVE MINI STOCKS

Dundas driver Karl Sault rebounded with a feature win last Friday and regained the Mini Stock points lead as a result. Abel Castelein of Cayuga is back to 2nd in the standings, followed by Caledonia’s Mike Evers, Brantford driver Jake Brown, and Hamilton’s Dale Cooke. Sault’s win was his division-leading 5th of the season, and he also leads the Rookie of the Year standings.

PIERCED PARTS BOMBERS

Roles reversed again last Friday as Waterdown’s Rodney Rutherford retook the points lead from Caledonia driver Jesse McDonald. Rutherford won the feature while McDonald had trouble, giving Rutherford a 14 point lead in the standings with 2 races left in the championship chase. Hamilton’s Jeremy May is just 1 point ahead of Dundas driver Sarah Rutherford for 3rd in the standings, while Kathi Dickie of Brantford and Hagersville driver Dusty DeBoer are tied for 5th.

MONSTER MASH CANCELED

Ohsweken Speedway regrets to announce that the first annual “Monster Mash” scheduled for October 15 has been cancelled. Ohsweken Speedway thanks competitors and fans for their interest in the event, and hopes to reschedule it next season.

Ladouceur Claims Cornwall Speedway Pro Stock Championship; Seeks Third Consecutive Mohawk Racing Parts Title

It was a quiet weekend in the Joey Ladouceur race shop this weekend. For the second week in a row, Cornwall Motor Speedway was forced to cancel their racing program due to a persistent all day rain. While Ladouceur virtually had the championship won in the past couple weeks, the rainouts have made it mathematically impossible for anyone to catch him.

With his fourth consecutive and sixth Cornwall track title now conquered, the attention now shifts to the Mohawk Racing Parts Series. After winning all four events so far in the series, Ladouceur has a commanding lead going into this Sunday’s 50 lap main event at Cornwall. Ladouceur is looking to become the first driver since the series began in 1998 to sweep all of the events in a season. With the imminent championship, Ladouceur will have won his third consecutive Mohawk Racing Parts Pro Stock series crown, and eighth of his career.

Once the season ends this weekend at Cornwall, the attention will shift full time to the Mr. DIRTcar Pro Stock championship, with races on September 9^th at Autodrome Drummond, September 17^th at Mohawk Raceway, October 9^th at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse, and Brockville Speedway on October 17^th for the season finale.

“It has been an unbelievable season for us so far”, says Ladouceur. “We really want that DIRTcar Pro Stock championship though. We have won a lot of races and the Cornwall Championship and all of the other championships, but it would really top off our year to take home the Mr. DIRTcar crown”.

Ladouceur will also race at Mohawk International Raceway on Thursday night as they kick off the Labor Day Weekend celebrations. Ladouceur will be looking to find the perfect set up for the upcoming Mr. DIRTcar Pro Stock event.

TWO CHAMPIONS TO EMERGE AT LUMBERMART TWIN 50'S

(Halifax, NS – Sept 1st, 2011) Billed as “the BEST four-cylinder drivers in Atlantic Canada,” the Lumbermart Thunder and Lightning divisions will take centre stage at Scotia Speedworld this Friday night as they crown the first two champions of the 2011 season. The popular four-cylinder classes will compete for their final time on the oval this summer in the Lumbermart Twin 50’s. Also seeing action this week are the Hydraulics Plus Bandoleros, Trucks and Coco Beach Legends. Gates and Box Office open at 5:00 pm; racing gets underway at 7:00 p.m.

It’s down to formalities in the Lumbermart Lightning class as Jorden Smith (Lakeside) has a 92 point advantage heading into Friday evenings festivities and will only have to start the main feature to secure his first championship. Everyone behind him has something to fight for when it comes to the season ending standings. Jamie Dillman (Carroll’s Corner) takes a 21 point lead into the Lumbermart 50, over last week’s feature winner, Nick Hurshman (Lakeside), “Crazy” Craig Cordeau (Windsor) and Cody Singer (Kennetcook). Only 34 points separate sixth through twelfth in the championship standings heading into Friday night.

Four drivers have a realistic shot at the Lumbermart Thunder crown. Dave Matthews (Kennetcook) enters the battle with the slimmest of margins – one point to be exact over Matthew Warren (White’s Lake). Tylor Hawes (Sheet Harbour) who finished runner-up last season only needs to gain four points on Matthews and three on Warren to emerge as champion. While the top three jockey for what would be their first championships, 2010 champ Stevie Lively (Shubenacadie) will be looking to upset their hopes and take home back-to-back crowns. Lively is 24 points back of Matthews but a win in the 50-lap event could make things exciting when it comes to the point picture on Friday.

Admission for the Weekly Racing Series is $12.00 for adults; $2.00 for youth aged 8-15; children 7 and under are admitted free. All children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. CTCC Weisode 7 Features Etienne Borgeat

Toronto, August 31st 2011 - Etienne Borgeat drives the #2 GT Racing Pontiac Solstice and he is poised to take the 2011 Championship points lead in the Super Class. The only thing standing in his way is the actual leader, Richard Boake in his Subaru STI. The 48 point spread breaks down to only ten positions, but with only three races left in the season, time might be running out. Will Borgeat be able to keep everything together as CTCC takes on Montreal's legendary Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve for the first time?

"During the season I was always there with two third places, a few fourth and sixth places… I was always there, but I was never had a big chance to win a race" states Borgeat. "It's difficult here because it's a different configuration than what we are used to, lots of double corners."

Rain Forces Cornwall Cancellation; Doiron to Finish Season Third in Track Points

Just two weeks ago, Joel Doiron was third place in track points at Cornwall, and within striking distance of his first Cornwall Speedway track championship since taking the title back in 2002. With two consecutive weeks of rain on Sunday nights canceling the final two points events at the track, Doiron will finish the season in third place in points.

“We would have liked to have those two races to see if we could have caught up to the leader in points”, says Doiron. “That is racing though and we can’t control the weather. We have been real strong the second half of the season, and we look forward to this weekend. Congratulations to Stephane Lafrance and his team on winning the championship. Stephane had a great year and is deserving of the laurels”.

With the final race at Cornwall this Sunday being a non-points event, Doiron will end the season third in track points, just 29 points behind the leader. After struggling early in the year as the team learned the characteristics of their new Bicknell chassis, Doiron had a solid second half of the year, posting a win on July 24^th, and also posting top five finishes in five of the last six events.

This coming weekend, Doiron will be at Mohawk International Raceway on Thursday night for their 50 lap Frenchie’s Chevrolet American Revolution Series finale. On Sunday night, Joel and his team will make their final appearance of the season at Cornwall with a 125 lap Mr. DIRTcar/Canadian Nationals Series race.

After this weekend, Doiron’s schedule is up in the air for the rest of the season. They will be back at Mohawk Raceway for their Mr. DIRTcar 358 Modified series race on September 16^th, and also plan to attend the Brockville Mr. DIRTcar event on October 15^th. There may also be races added on Joel’s schedule that will be announced at a later date.

Danny O’Brien On Verge of 10th Brockville Speedway Track Championship

With an off weekend for the 358 Modified division last week, Danny O’Brien and his team were looking forward to getting back to the track this week, and making their final run to the end of the 2011 regular season at Brockville Speedway. O’Brien carried a 36 point lead into the weekend. The O’Brien team also planned to travel to Cornwall Speedway on Sunday night in hopes of getting the car dialed in for the season finale Labor Day Weekend.

At Brockville on Saturday night, O’Brien started the night out by finishing fifth in his qualifying heat race. After the qualifier, O’Brien returned to the pit area and the team deliberated as to what changes to make on the car before the 30 lap main event. Danny started the feature from inside of row seven in 13^th place. After avoiding a multi-car spin on lap four, O’Brien was now up to seventh and by lap 7 he was up into the top five. The caution came out on lap eight, and O’Brien restarted the race from the fourth position, when the race resumed he made his move to third and held that through halfway. A few laps later, O’Brien made the pass for second, and that is where he finished.

“It was a good run for us again tonight. We are doing what we need to do to win this championship”, says O’Brien. “We lost a few points to the 115, but if we can come in here next week and run our own race, and have a solid finish we will be in great shape”.

O’Brien had planned to race at Cornwall Speedway on Sunday, but the dissipating remnants of Hurricane Irene that come up from the east coast caused an all day rain, and track officials were forced to cancel the racing program.

This coming weekend O’Brien will be back at Brockville on Saturday night for the season finale for the regular season. O’Brien hopes to clinch his 10^th Brockville Speedway title. On Sunday night, Cornwall Speedway hosts a 125 lap Canadian Nationals/Mr. DIRTcar 358 Modified Series race.

Engine Woes Sideline Sallows at MIR; Heavy Rain Washes Out Cornwall Double Features

It was all set to be a busy weekend for Dillon Sallows and the DKD Racing team. First up was the usual Friday night stop at Mohawk Raceway, and then it was a double header at Cornwall Speedway with a make up feature from a month ago.

At Mohawk Raceway on Friday night, Sallows started in the front row for the 35 lap main Frenchie’s Built Ford Tough main event and battled in the top five for much of the event, but motor issues developed just past half way, and Sallows was forced to the pits. It was soon discovered that the motor problems were terminal, and Sallows began making phone calls to get a replace GM Crate Motor installed before Sunday’s events at Cornwall.

Sallows spent much of the day on Saturday getting a new motor lined up, and spent Saturday night and Sunday morning installing the new power plant.

“It has been a long couple days dealing with the motor issues, but it is part of the sport”, says Sallows. “I really have to thank our sponsors for everything they do for us. If it wasn’t them we would not be racing”.

Sallows was ready for Cornwall Speedway on Sunday with double features on tap for the evening. Unfortunately, Mother Nature had other plans as the remnants of Hurricane Irene caused an all day rain forcing Cornwall Speedway officials to cancel their racing program.

This coming weekend Sallows will have a rare Thursday night show at Mohawk International Raceway. This will conclude the 2011 regular season at MIR. On Sunday, the season will come to and end at Cornwall Speedway. The double features that had been scheduled the previous week have been scrapped and a regular show will end the 2011 season.

Looking ahead, Sallows has some special events planned as the season begins to wind down. Mohawk Raceway will host a Mr. DIRTcar Sportsman Series race on September 16^th. This will conclude the season at MIR for Sallows. The following week, on Friday, September 23^rd, Sallows will be back at Brighton Speedway for their annual Applefest Weekend. This race will also be a Mr. DIRTcar Sportsman Series race. The following couple weeks are still up in the air, but Dillon and the DKD Racing team plan to attend Super DIRT Week at the New York State Fairgrounds, participating in the DIRTcar Sportsman Futures Race on Thursday, October 6^th, and the Mr. DIRTcar Sportsman race at the Fairgrounds on Saturday, October 8^th.

Robbie Shuttleworth Claims Ontario Topless Sprints Victory at Humberstone Speedway

The much-anticipated debut of the Ontario Topless Sprints at Humberstone Speedway in Port Colborne, Ontario finally took flight last Friday night.  A field of 11 Wingless Sprint Cars were on hand and thrilled the crowd at Humberstone Speedway.

The night started out with qualifying events, and Don Adamczyk and Brad Knab took home the checkered flag in their respective events.  Robbie Shuttleworth won the C.J. Ricker Mobile Maintenance Dash for Cash.

In the 15 lap main event, Shuttleworth, of Geneva, New York survived a pair of red flag incidents and took home the $2500 top prize and became the inaugural winner in Ontario Topless Sprints competition.  April Wilson, making her first ever wingless sprint start finished second and claimed the Tapp’s Water Treatment Hard Charger Award.  John Watson, Dick Mahoney and Doug Banks rounded out the top five.

“We feel like we put on a good show for the crowd, and we have something we can build on for the future”, says Series Director Ken Bayliss.  “We understand that we can make some improvements for next year to make this a better event for everyone”.

Ontario Formula Ford - Back to Mosport for Trent Hindman

Wayside, N.J., August 31 – MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development driver Trent Hindman returns to Canada this weekend to rejoin the battle for the 2011 Ontario Formula Ford Championship at Mosport International Raceway off of his second win of the season in Skip Barber National competition at Lime Rock Park. With the school year fast approaching, Hindman is getting in as much seat time as possible before classes become the priority.

After Lime Rock Park, Hindman enjoyed a well deserved break before heading down to Florida for the second round of the selection process for Team USA Scholarship; a two-day shoot out in slightly detuned USF2000 cars at Andersen RacePark. Hindman joined a group of seven finalists that included fellow Skip Barber National competitors Brandon Newey and Sebastian Ordonez and Skip Barber National alumni Dennis Trebing.

"The Shoot-out was a great experience", said Hindman. "I traveled by myself for the first time and stayed with Jonathan and Quinn Jorge for the week. Andersen RacePark is a blast to drive and it was nice to get behind the wheel of a USF2000 car again."

"I really want to thank Jeremy Shaw and Team USA Scholarship for considering me, Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing for giving us well turned-out cars for the Shoot-out and Andersen RacePark for hosting the event. I did the best I could and I'm looking forward to hearing the results."

While awaiting the final Team USA Scholarship selection, Hindman turns his attentions north to the Ontario Formula Ford Championship, where he holds a 174 point lead over Garrett Grist in Formula Ford A despite missing the opening rounds of the season.

"My main reason for running Ontario Formula Ford was to get some extra seat time between Skip Barber National weekends. I've been pleasantly surprised how well I've done and a big part of my success comes down to BGR Team Grote. Week in and week out they've given me well prepared cars to drive. All I have to do is show up with my gear and jump in and I'm able to contend for poles and wins."

Mosport International Raceway

Since making his Ontario Formula Ford Championship debut at Mosport in June, Hindman has become rather familiar with the Bowmanville, Ontario circuit and the surrounding area.

"Like many tracks, Mosport is kind of in the middle of nowhere; about 20 minutes away from the town where we usually stay. What makes Mosport different is you feel like you go through a time warp on that ride into town. The few houses around the track look like they're from the 1940's, but by the time you get to the hotel you're in the middle of a modern small town."

Who is Trent Hindman?

Trent Hindman, 15, began racing karts at his local track at the age of 8. In 2005 he began racing and winning in World Karting Association (WKA) and Stars of Karting competition before moving up to cars with the Skip Barber Racing School in early 2009. Hindman's goal is to progress through the "Mazda Road to Indy" program, culminating in a ride in the IZOD IndyCar Series. Hindman would like to thank MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development, Skip Barber Racing School, Sparco, Premier Woodcraft, Racelite Protection and Altemus Prime Communications for their support. Exotic Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati supercars headed for Targa Newfoundland

CALGARY (August 31, 2011) – A brace of the world’s most exotic cars are headed for one of the world’s great automobile adventures as five ‘supercars’ make the long trek from Alberta to the start of the 10th annual Targa Newfoundland.

The names conjure visions of the greatest sports cars of the century – Ferrari, Lamborghini and Maserati. And although it’s the first time most of their names have appeared on the Targa Newfoundland entry list, group organizer Zahir Rana thinks a visit to Newfoundland is overdue.

Rana, principal of ZR Exotic Auto of Calgary and self-described car-crazy, believes that the world’s most sophisticated cars are meant to be enjoyed on some of the world’s most challenging roads. Rana’s company sells, services and modifies exotic cars, and in between time organizes driving adventures for customers who share his belief that fine cars are only appreciated when they’re driven. Rana views the five cars coming to Targa 2011 as the vanguard of a legion of exotic car owners who are looking for opportunities to see interesting places from the driver’s seat.

The roll-call of cars coming to Targa reads like every car aficionado’s lottery-win wish list: a pair of Ferrari F430s (a Spyder and a 707 hp coupe from tuner Novitec Rosso), Lamborghini Murciélago LP750, Saleen S7, Maserati MC12 (one of just 50 in the world), and what Rana determines is the world’s fastest Ferrari Enzo. Each is a coveted supercar in its own right and worthy of a magazine spread.

But while their collective value is greater than the national debt of several small countries, Rana says the cars’ owners are remarkably down-to-earth. “They’re really normal folks who really love cars. They’re enthusiasts, and they own terrific cars, but they’re just like passionate car fans everywhere. They want to enjoy their cars and I make sure they do.”

Rana organizes several trips a year, and has taken his followers through exotic locations in Canada and the US. He’s organized charity events, and generated considerable attention last year when he staged a race between his exotic Ferrari and a Canadian Forces CF-18 jet on the runway at CFB Cold Lake, Alberta.

“We have fun,” he grins.

“We just love the idea of coming to Newfoundland,” Rana says. “Last year, a group of us went to Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and PEI and had a terrific time. We said, ‘One day, we should do Newfoundland’. Then I saw the Targa show on TSN and said, ‘Wow! That’s us’!”  In addition to the drivers and navigators and service crew for the cars, Rana has invited a video crew and some media from Germany to capture the story.

The visit to Targa is also a fact-finding mission for Rana. The cars will be part of a separate touring event that is not included in the regular competition – a chance, he says, to better understand the event and prepare proper competition cars for next year.

Owned and operated by Newfoundland International Motorsports Limited, Targa Newfoundland is one of three internationally recognized Targa motorsports events in the world. The 10th annual Targa Newfoundland will start in St. John’s on Saturday, September 10, 2011, and end back in the capital Saturday, September 17. The competition will cover more than 2,000 kilometres of the challenging, twisty roads of the central and eastern portion of Newfoundland, including up to 450 kilometres of closed-road, flat-out Targa stages.

NASCAR: Chase For The NASCAR Sprint Cup field taking shape

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Aug. 29, 2011) — Two races remain before the complete 12-driver Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup is set, seedings and all.

Here’s what we know: Five drivers have clinched a Chase spot in some fashion. Kyle Busch, five-time defending champion Jimmie Johnson, Matt Kenseth and Carl Edwards have locked up a top-10 spot. Kevin Harvick, on the strength of three 2011 victories, has clinched at least a Wild Card spot – and will likely cement a top-10 berth in this Sunday night’s AdvoCare 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

After race No. 26 at Richmond International Raceway, the top-10 drivers in points will fill out the first portion of the 12-driver Chase. Spots 11 and 12 go to those drivers outside the top 10 with the most victories, provided they are in the top 20. The Wild Card tiebreaker is points position.

A few words on bonus points: Only the top 10 get them. Once the Chase field is set, all 12 drivers will have their points reset to 2,000. Then, for those in the top 10, three additional bonus points will be tacked on for each win during the 26-race regular season.

Sunday’s race in Atlanta will likely further shore things up. The “magic number” for Atlanta is 49. Leaving Atlanta, any driver who has a 49-point lead over 11th-place clinches a top-10 Chase spot (Note: If the driver in question owns the tiebreaker over 11th of best-finish, that magic number shrinks to 48.). Here are the clinch scenarios going into the weekend…

Kevin Harvick and Jeff Gordon: Both 93 points ahead of 11th, Harvick and Gordon can guarantee a top-10 spot with at least a finish of 40th; or 41st and at least one lap led; or 42nd and the most laps led.

Ryan Newman: Currently 73 points ahead of 11th, Newman can guarantee a top-10 spot with at least a finish of 20th; or 21st and at least one lap led; or 22nd and the most laps led.

Kurt Busch: Currently 60 points ahead of 11th, Busch can guarantee a top-10 spot with at least a finish of seventh; or eighth and at least one lap led; or ninth and the most laps led.

Both Dale Earnhardt Jr. (39 points ahead of 11th) and Tony Stewart (21 points ahead) can both mathematically reach that 49-point threshold but would need to help. No specific finish guarantees a spot.

There are Wild Card clinching possibilities for this weekend, but all depends on finishes from various competitors on Sunday.

The Change CRAFTER Services Mazda RX-8 was crowned Canadian GT1 Time Attack Champion

Aug 28, 2011- Mosport International Raceway: The Change CRAFTER Services Mazda RX-8 was crowned Canadian GT1 Time Attack Champion by turning two record laps at the 2011 ASN Canada FIA Time-Attack (solo I) National Championships this weekend at MIR. Driven by MIR expert Scott Murfin the car broke the GT1 lap record of 1:36.868 on Saturday with a new record of 1:36.568 to be followed on a cool Sunday with a truly amazing 1:35.168. "I doubt that I could repeat that lap, it was a real one off effort where I was on the limit everywhere" commented Murfin.

Car owner Gary Wood said, "this is the 2nd Canadian National Championship for the car which earlier won the 2005 Autoslalom (solo II) title in B Stock trim. Since then we have done annual performance upgrades including adding many Mazdaspeed Motorsports Development racing parts, having the 2 rotor engine rebuilt by Mazdees of Pickering ON and adding a Petitt Stage 2 Supercharger. Suspension setup was done by Can-Alignment of Millgrove ON and due to class positioning it ran on 255/40/17 Hankook R-S3 tires which provided astonishing levels of grip of 1.83 G in turn 2 at MIR. Brakes by Racing Brakes using Hawk DTC 70 brake pads completed the package. KAWARTHA SPEEDWAY: August 26, 2011 report and photos

Every short track speedway promoter in the land dreams of a packed pit area and a spectator area where every seat is filled. Those dreams came true Friday, August 26th as Kawartha Speedway welcomed the Ontario Legend and Pro Challenge tours to a night of racing that also included a 50 lap Better Carpet Thunder Car invitational main event, along with the NAPA Auto Parts ACT Late Models and Hasiuk Trailer and Container Rental Mini Stocks.

The night’s action got underway with a pair of 10 lap late model qualifying heats won by Ryan Kimball and Larry Jackson. Chad Strawn and defending track champion Willie Reyns shared the opening round of thunder car battles and earned the front row for the night’s 50 lap feature. Ryan Oosterholt and invader Nolan Gould moved to the semi feature by winning the mini stock preliminaries. Earl Ireland captured the late model semi feature, with Matt Spence and Gould earning the same honours in the thunder car and mini stock fields respectively. Mike Hennink closed-out qualifying by scoring a thunder car consolation round win.

The first feature for Kawartha’s regular divisions was the 50 lapper for the Better Carpet Thunder Cars.  At the drop of the green, Chad Strawn out-dragged fellow front row starter Willie Reyns and broke away from the pack.  Early in the going, it looked like the Newcastle, Ontario runner would score his second career checkered flag, but the story of 2011 has been the strong runs by Queensville, Ontario rookie Ken Donaldson Jr.  Racing more like a veteran than a freshman, Donaldson – who has all but locked-up the class championship – closed ground on Strawn lap after lap.  A pair of solo spins by Mike Sinopoli failed to produce a yellow flag and the entire race distance was run without a caution.  Donaldson entered the night with a 31 point cushion over defending track champion Willie Reyns and his victory – combined with Reyns’ 3rd place effort – widened that gap.  Strawn held-on for second, with Steve Mayhew and Andy Ford 4th and 5th.

The NAPA Auto Parts ACT Late Models were next to shine, as Ryan Kimball and Larry Jackson brought the field to the green flag.  The chase for a track championship in Kawartha’s headline division is one of the tightest in years and every driver was looking to not only gain a position on the track, but a spot in the standings.  Jackson would manage to dispose of Kimball early, while 3rd place starter Dwight Brown focused his attention on the back bumper of the #84J.  As the drivers signed-in for action, Brown trailed the 2007 track champion by just 1 point as the pair fought for 3rd and 4th place.  There was only a 46 point difference between top 5 drivers in the standings. 

Cale Bailey spun the #67 in turn 2 with 5 laps complete, while Kimball looped his #16 in the same turn two laps later, but when the green flag reappeared, the fierce battles continued throughout the pack.  As the leaders came off turn 4, Brown nudged Jackson just enough to cause the rear of the Oakville, Ontario driver’s Pontiac to lose grip.  As soon as the #20 slipped past, Jackson was back on the hammer in search of his rival.  He’d get close, but not close enough to keep Brown from his second 2011 win.  Earl Ireland’s strong late season charge continued, as the Peterborough, Ontario car dealer finished 3rd.  Kyle Donaldson was 4th, with Dan McHattie 5th.  Four of the top 5 finishers are in the hunt for the championship.  6th place finisher Bryan Mercer entered the night 13 points behind McHattie in the quest for a seat at the champion’s table.

Michael Batchelor and ‘Too’ Moroney brought the province’s finest 4 cylinder runners to the green flag for the Hasiuk Trailer and Container Rental Mini Stock feature race.  For the first time in weeks, the mini stock main event was slowed by a pair of yellow flags.  The first came for contact between Batchelor and Nolan Gould in turn 3 with 2 laps complete.  A spin by Ryan Oosterholt in the first turn ended the night for the Blackstock, Ontario racer’s #79 machine.

From the halfway point of the 20 lapper, Moroney faced a solid challenge from Alex Lees.  The division’s point leader was able to maintain the top spot until the Cameron, Ontario teen slipped past with just a handful of laps remaining to take his second career win.  Gould was 3rd, with Brad Martin and Danny Benedict finishing out the fast 5.

Kawartha klips:  Matt Haufe continued his K.D. hot streak with a win in the 20 lap Ontario Legends main event.  The regular at Capital City Speedway is unbeaten in 3 starts.  California-based legends runner Steve Contrell was the first car across the line, but was penalized 2 spots for jumping the race’s initial start.  Tim Forbes won the Pro Challenge Series feature event...Legends’ racer Kevin Foisey made hard contact with the front stretch retaining wall early in the feature.  His car was damaged too badly to continue, but the driver – although frustrated – was uninjured...Nolan Gould made the trip from Almonte, Ontario to run with Kawartha’s mini stocks.  Oshawa’s Mike Poulton, Tom Cormier from Carrying Place and Aylmer, Ontario’s Mike Hennink all made their first thunder car starts of the year...John Bryan’s return to the thunder car wars was a brief one.  The 2001 track champion experienced mechanical issues during practice and ran only 1 lap of his qualifying heat before calling it a night.  There was also an incident in the pits where a radiator hose came off Bryan’s #88 car, scalding his wife Kathy Bryan – a former racer in the mini stock division – with a hot, pressurized mixture of antifreeze and water.  Initial treatment was provided at the track by Apollo Patient Transfer medical staff.  Drivers, teams, track staff and officials wish Kathy a speedy recovery.

Kawartha Speedway takes another week off Friday, September 2nd before closing-out the 2011 regular season Friday, September 9th.  A 50 lap Hasiuk Trailer and Container Rental Mini Stock invitational will be the featured attraction, along with the NAPA Auto Parts ACT Late Models, Better Carpet Thunder Cars and the year’s final appearance by the Ontario Legends Series.  Fans can find the latest news on the 2011 schedule – including the 250 lap NASCAR Canadian Tire Series finale Saturday, September 24th – by visiting www.kawarthaspeedway.com.
