Eddie MacDonald Takes Inaugural ACT Invitational Checkers... Brandon Watson third.

LOUDON, NH – Eddie MacDonald of Rowley, MA won the Inaugural ACT Invitational at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. MacDonald came from the 19th starting position and took the lead on lap 36 from young Brandon Watson from Stayner, ON.

Watson hung with MacDonald, not more than a car length away and eventually took the lead again on the lap 41 restart. MacDonald would eventually take the lead again for good.

"It was awesome to win the first ACT race here. I'm sure there will be more but winning the first one is special. There were still a lot of fans in the grandstands from after the truck race," said MacDonald who scored his second win of the weekend after taking the East Series race at NHMS on Friday.

After MacDonald took the lead for the last time the battle of the race became for second. Nick Sweet of Barre, VT and Joey Laquerre from Montpelier, VT caught Watson for second. The three ran under a blanket for the final 7 laps with Sweet getting the advantage and Watson fell back to third after Laquerre momentarily lost the handle. Watson then had to hold off Patrick Laperle from St-Denis, QC for third at the line by a bumper.

Laperle had to settle for fourth followed by John Donahue of Graniteville, VT taking fifth. Laquerre held on for sixth followed by Brad Leighton, Brian Hoar, Bruce Thomas, and Joey Polewarczyk, Jr. came home tenth.

Joey Doiron of Berwick, ME got the initial jump on lap one and led by three car lengths over pole sitter Bruce Thomas of Groton, CT by the time they were in turn 2. Doiron then pulled out to a comfortable lead for the first 20 laps before the handling on his car appeared to fade.

Thomas was right there to take over followed closely by Ontario's Brandon Watson. Watson and Thomas battled through lap traffic as the field remained under green for the first 31 laps. That ended when Eric Chase spun in turn two. Watson took the lead on the restart until MacDonald took over the lead after coming from his 19th starting position.

The Inaugural ACT Invitational at New Hampshire was completed in 38 minutes and 32 seconds with only 2 cautions. The lead was swapped five times among four drivers.
The Série ACT Castrol drivers will be back in action tomorrow at St-Eustache Speedway in St-Eustache, QC for a 300 lap to cap off their season.

The American Canadian Late Model Tour will finish off their season at Oxford Plains Speedway on Sunday, October 11. Next Sunday, September 27 most of these drivers will show up for the 47th Annual Chittenden Milk Bowl at Thunder Road International Speedbowl.

NASCAR KOMATSU 300 AT RIVERSIDE POSTPONED UNTIL SUNDAY

JAMES RIVER, NS (September 19, 2009) - Steady rain at Riverside International Speedway today has caused the postponement of the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series Wilson Equipment/ Komatsu 300 until Sunday afternoon.

Time trials to set the starting grid will go at Noon Sunday followed by a 12:30 autograph session. Driver intros and pre-race ceremonies will start at 1 p.m. and the green flag for the Komatsu 300 is scheduled to fly at 1:30 p.m.

The trackside box office and grandstand will open at 11 a.m. Ticket prices range from $8 to $40 depending on age group and seat location; children seven and under are admitted free.

The Komatsu 300 is round 11 of 13 on the 2009 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series.

Targa Newfoundland Leg 4 Update

NEWFOUNDLAND - If it’s Thursday it must be Marystown — and Garnish and Fortune and the sweeping stages of Harbour Mille.

Competitors rose to frosty windshields in the morning, but it was a bright day of long straights and tight town stages that started with a competitor favourite, a bracing run through Little Bay East to a hearty breakfast at Harbour Mille, then back out for the first of the town stages.

The long beach of Frenchman’s Cove gave lots of people a chance the make up time lost in the tighter bits, but in the end, only three Targa teams finished the day without adding penalty points. A change in Leg 3 scoring gave Glen Clarke and Andy Proudfoot a four-second penalty, but they do hold on to the overall lead.

“We’ve been on the Burin of seven years,” said Robert Giannou, president and CEO of Newfoundland International Motorsports Ltd., “and this has been one of the best years every recorded from Targa both from a safety and a competition point of view.”

That holds true for the Grand Touring competition as well, where the BMW 325i-driving team of Ferdinand and Chrisoph Trauttmansdorff can claim the only clean slate.

Leg 5 starts bright and early at Boat Harbour Friday with a brand new stage into Petit Forte, and puts another Targa Newfoundland into the books back in St. John’s.

Owned by Newfoundland International Motorsports Limited, and operated by Targa Newfoundland Motorsport Club, Targa Newfoundland is one of three internationally recognized Targa motorsports events in the world. The 8th annual Targa Newfoundland will start and end in St. John's and will cover more than 2,000 kilometres of the challenging, twisty roads of the central and eastern portion of the island of Newfoundland over six days, including up to 400 kilometres of closed-road, flat-out Targa stages. NASCAR Canadian Tire Series: Riverside ready to race.... NASCAR style

JAMES RIVER, NS (September 17, 2009) - Riverside International Speedway is ready for Saturday's Wilson Equipment/ Komatsu 300, the 12th of 13 races on the 2009 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Mobil 1 schedule - and the final race of the season at the fabled facility, a favourite among fans and NASCAR Canadian Tire Series competitors.

2007 event winner Mark Dilley (Barrie, ON) likes Riverside so much he is considering using certain elements in the renovation of a track he is helping operate in Ontario.

"From a competitor's point of view, it's got it all," he said. "Just a lot of fun to race at."

2008 event winner Don Thomson Jr. (Hamilton, ON) echoed Dilley's sentiment.

"It's a great track in a great part of the country," said Thomson. "They bring in a good crowd and create an atmosphere."

Andrew Ranger (Roxton Pond, PQ), the inaugural series champion (2007) and current point leader, would love to pick up a third win on the '09 season this weekend, especially at Riverside where he's led laps but never the one that counts.

"It's a fantastic track," said Ranger. "A lot of fun to drive. I really like racing there with all the fans that come out to watch."

While the NASCAR guys share similar sentiment about Riverside the sentimental favourite among fans would have to be Antigonish's Donald Chisholm, the only local driver expected to enter the Komatsu 300.

Chisholm's racing focus has been primarily in the regional pro stock circles but he has competed in each of the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series events at Riverside the past two seasons as well as making a road trip to compete with the series in Ontario. Chisholm has made steady progress with the series and is eager to defend his home-turf Saturday.

"Running with these guys has become a highlight of our season the last few years," said Chisholm, who led the most laps at last weekends CARQUEST Tour season finale. "The cars are different than the pro stock so there is an adjustment for us, but we've had this car out testing and feel like we're going to be very competitive - maybe even a top five finish."

Besides great racing action and enjoying the pomp and circumstance that is NASCAR, fans at the Komatsu 300 may also get the chance to see themselves on television as TSN crews will be on hand filming the race for a September 26 broadcast. And - as a special treat Wilson Equipment, the regional Komatsu dealer and present sponsor of the race, will distribute a limited number of a special edition event t-shirts FREE to lucky fans.

The Komatsu 300 is the highlight of a double-header weekend at Riverside that starts Friday with the Napa 100, the season finale for the Highland Home Hardware Sportsman Super Series and the second and final leg of the 2009 Lockhart Truck Centre Maritime Legends Challenge - the season finale for the 2009 Maritime League of Legends Touring Series.

Frank Fraser Jr. (Shubenacadie) holds a seven point lead over second-place Darren Wallage (Enfiled) in the Sportsman series with Scott Allen (Antigonish) third, just one point behind Wallage. James Graves (Halifax) and Craig Chisholm (Antigonish) are tied for fourth eight points behind Allen.

Ian Mollins (Moncton, NB) leads the Legends with a 15-point advantage over Justin MacNeill (Bedford) who is 49 markers ahead of third-place Matt Moore (Falmouth).

Friday's show is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. with qualifying heat races followed by features for sportsman and Legends. The grandstand gates and box office will open at 4 p.m.

Saturday will see all NASCAR action starting with a 1:30 p.m. practice session. Qualifying time trials at 5 p.m. will set the starting grid for the Komatsu 300 then fans will have a chance to meet the stars and see the cars of the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series at an on-track autograph session, scheduled to start at 5:45 p.m. Pre-race ceremonies and driver intros go at 6:30; the green flag for the Komatsu 300 is set for 7 p.m. Fans will be privy to all the excitement of the day with a 1 p.m. open time for the box office and grandstand.

Advance tickets are available until Noon Friday at the Riverside Int'l Speedway box office in the Antigonish Mall. Along with the frigid weather, snow storms and ice pellets, Canadian drivers need to be conscious of switching our their summer tires for winter ones. We all know this can be quite the hassle! Drivers encouraged to install proper tires for cold weather driving

Winter is fast approaching, but people shouldn’t wait for the snow to fly before they install winter tires.

“Tires are a critical piece of equipment,” says Greg Sims, President and CEO, OK Tire. “While the industry has worked to educate Canadians about risks, we know there are still some drivers who don’t install winter tires and rely on all season or summer tires instead.” According to the Rubber Association of Canada, modern winter tires offer 50 per cent more winter traction than all season tires.

But drivers who don’t switch out their tires when seasons change do have a second alternative. The all-in-one tire with the snowflake and mountain symbol meets traction requirements for snow and are recognized by Transport Canada and the Rubber Association of Canada.

Drivers can also take other simple steps to stay safe in winter months. Checking tires for signs of wear each month is a good habit, and using a gauge to check tire pressure anytime the temperature changes more than 15 C will reduce the risk of under-inflation. Under-inflation is the most common cause of tire failure and can lead to accidents caused by poor braking, steering and acceleration.

Kawartha Speedway 2009 - It's the Final Countdown

FRASERVILLE, ON - They’ve been racing all season, but for drivers in Kawartha Speedway’s Better Carpet Thunder Car and Discount Car & Truck Rental Mini Stock divisions, it will all come down to a one race shootout.  There will be a run for all the marbles Friday, September 18th.

With the top 2 drivers in points – Dan McHattie and Brandon Watson – taking part in the ACT Invitational at New Hampshire Motor Speedway Saturday, September 19th, the NAPA Auto Parts Late Model points were decided Friday, September 11th as McHattie earned his second consecutive crown.

Throughout the current campaign, Kyle Donaldson has held the hot hand in the thunder car division – but last season’s champion Willie Reyns and John Baker Jr. are still mathematically alive.  Reyns is 41 points behind, while Baker is 60 out of the top spot.  In the track’s 4 cylinder class, Mike Wallace has been all but assured of the title.  The 3rd generation racer from Peterborough, Ontario has been hotter than a firecracker lately and swept every race he entered during a recent show. 

2008 champion Jason Juriga is 38 markers in arrears, while ‘Too’ Moroney sits 111 points back.  Even though the title won’t be decided until the final checkered flag falls, many expect to see Wallace accept the hardware at the champion’s celebration come January.

Kawartha Speedway will host a 100 lap invitational event for the NAPA Auto Parts Late Models Friday, September 18th.  With the season’s points already decided, a battle for the $2,000 winner’s purse on the line means a huge car count is expected.  Also on the show will be the year’s final events for the Better Carpet Thunder Cars and Discount Car & Truck Rental Mini Stocks.  Gates open at 3:00, with racing at 7:00. 

The season concludes Saturday, September 26th as the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series wraps-up their 2009 campaign with the Z-Line Design 250 – presented by the Dodge Dealers of Ontario and Coca Cola.  In last year’s rain shortened event, Jason Hathaway scored the win while Scott Steckly wrapped-up his first series championship. 

This year’s race was scheduled to be the Canadian Tire Series debut for 2008 Mr. DIRTcar sportsman-modified champion Chris Raabe of Napanee, Ontario.  The 18 year-old, who recently clinched the track championships at Can Am Motorsports Park and Thunder Alley Speedway, has decided to focus his attention on earning back-to-back titles before moving along to a full-time asphalt program.

Stacey Learning The Ropes

 

In different professions, learning on the job has various names—internship, residency, fellowship, on-the-job training and many others. No matter the name, the 2009 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Mobil 1 is little more than a glorified test session for Dexter Stacey.

 

At 16 years of age, Stacey (No. 55 WJS Motorsports Pontiac) is on the track to increase his base of knowledge in stock cars, tracks and how to race. Therefore, it's not about winning and losing, but rather how much can he learn while on the track.

 

"Sure, it would be nice to be up front and win a race, but that's not what we're here for," he said.

 

The philosophy is this: Race the full season, visit all the tracks, learn everything possible and stay within a budget before making purchases and plans with questions having unknown answers.

 

"If we do this for a year, then we'll have a better idea of what exactly we need and what fits what we do," said Stacey, racing out of Kahnawake, Que., a town located in Mohawk Indian territory along the St. Lawrence river.  Next year is for keeps according to the youngster.

 

"We're going to buy a couple new cars this winter and put together a solid engine program to race for points next year."

 

Despite not having the best equipment available, Stacey has spent far more time on the track as opposed to off it this season. None of the performances have been anything to write home about, but his depth of knowledge grows by the minute.

 

"We've learned a lot this year," Stacey said. "And we're really looking forward to next year."

 

Stacey also noted that several other people have helped them along this year—his fellow NASCAR Canadian Tire Series competitors.

 

"Everybody has been great all year. They loan us stuff, they give us stuff. If we can't figure something out, they tell us how they do it. I really can't thank all of them enough," Stacey said.

 

Stacey has a goal of being a top-10 team next season, but that is a short-term goal and as lofty as that may be, his long-term goal is reaching for the stars.

 

"When I turn 18, I want to start moving up and get to the big leagues," he stated.

 

By big leagues, he means the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.

 

Youth is not wasted on this energetic young man nor is he lacking in confidence. Take a walk through the garage area at a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event; its hardly a unique combination.

Antigonish: A Favorite In NASCAR Canadian Tire Series

 

The words Bristol Motor Speedway create visions of paradise within the stock-car racing world. Everyone loves the high-banked turns and the speed they can generate.

 

Riverside International Speedway in Antigonish, N.S., was built as a scale model of the legendary track in Tennessee.

 

"It's just a great facility with an awesome track and great fans," said Scott Steckly. "We look forward to making this trip every year."

 

Mark Dilley likes it so much that he is considering using certain elements in the renovation of a track that he currently is helping to operate—Sunset Speedway in Innisfil, Ont.

 

"From a competitor's point of view, it's got it all," he said. "Just a lot of fun to race at."

 

Defending race champion Don Thomson Jr. echoed the sentiment of his colleagues.

 

"It's a great track in a great part of the country. They bring in a good crowd and create an atmosphere."

 

Andrew Ranger, who has won a pair of oval-track races this season, would love to pick up a third this Saturday. He led 61 laps in the race a season ago.

 

"It's a fantastic track. A lot of fun to drive. I really like racing there with all those fans who come out to watch."

 

Rain caused a postponement of the 2007 race from Saturday evening to Sunday afternoon. Dilley picked up an emotional win as it came just days after the death of his mother. And Thomson edged teammate JR Fitzpatrick to win last season.

 

Riverside News & Notes

 

The Race: This event is the 12th of 13 races on the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Mobil 1 schedule and the eighth of nine races on oval tracks this season. It is the series' third visit to the track.

 

The Procedure: The starting field is 24 cars, including provisionals. The first 21 cars will be determined through two-lap time trials. The remaining three spots will be awarded through the provisional process. The race will be 300 laps covering 99.99 miles.

 

The Track: Riverside Speedway originally opened in 1969 and was modeled after the legendary Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway. In 2005, the track was completely demolished and rebuilt including a new racing surface, concrete walls, lighting, grandstands and control tower. Like its counterpart, Riverside features high-banked turns of 14 degrees. The frontstretch is 440-feet long with a banking of six degrees while the back stretch is also 440 feet but with five-degree banking.

 

The Records: The one-lap qualifying record for the Canadian Tire Series is 14.883 seconds (80.548 mph), set by Peter Gibbons on Sept. 16, 2007. The 300-lap race record is held by Mark Dilley at 1 hour, 49 minutes, 16 seconds, also set on Sept. 16, 2007, for an average speed of 54.857 mph.

 

Last Year: Picking up the win was Don Thomson Jr. after Gibbons and Andrew Ranger got tangled up in the closing laps. Thomson was able to hold off his teammate, JR Fitzpatrick, on a green-white-checkered finish. The race had 12 lead changes involving seven different drivers.

 

Will He Or Won't He?: Thomson was set to unveil a brand new car in Nova Scotia with a NASCAR spec motor under the hood. Does his win last Saturday night at Barrie (Ont.) Speedway change those plans?

 

Big Weekend On Tap: On Friday, Sept. 18, the Highland Building Supplies Sportsman will compete in the NAPA 100. The Maritime Legends Challenge will also be on hand. The NASCAR Canadian Tire Series and the Komatsu 300 will be the main order of business on Saturday.

 

NCATS Notebook: Torbram Electric 300 Wrap-Up

 

Turning It Around: The top two finishers in the Torbram Electric 300 presented by The Source —Don Thomson Jr. (No. 4 Home Hardware Chevrolet) and Mark Dilley (No. 9 Dodge/Leland Ind. Dodge)—had slow starts to the season, but both want to close out the season on a good note. Thomson reached Victory Lane for the first time in 11 races and Dilley has logged back-to-back finishes inside the top five.

 

No Sophomore Jinx: After a sometimes rough rookie season, Anthony Simone (No. 95 Crown Modular/United Lumber Chevrolet) is having a solid second season. In Barrie, he collected his first series career pole.

 

Dominating Dodges: Seven of the top 10 finishing cars in the race carried the Dodge logo. Thomson's Chevy, along with the Fords of Andrew Ranger (No. 27 Walmart/Tide) and Kerry Micks (No. 02 Beyond Digital Imaging), were able to infiltrate the Mopar mob.

 

Mobil 1 Command Performance Driver of the Race: As a reward for his NASCAR Canadian Tire Series victory at Barrie Speedway, Thomson collects $1,500 from Mobil 1 as the Command Performance Driver of the Race.

 

Mopar Quick Three: This program rewards the top three finishing Dodges in the race eligible for the award. In the Torbram Electric 300, second-place finisher Dilley was the highest-finishing eligible Dodge and thus earned a $2,000 bonus. Brad Graham (No. 19 Logel's Auto Parts Dodge), who came home in fourth place, was the second-highest finishing eligible Dodge, which earned him a $1,000 award. Picking up $500 for finishing as the third-highest eligible Dodge was Jason Hathaway (No. 3 Snap-on Tools/Vortex Brake Pads Dodge). He finished fifth overall.

 

Coca-Cola Move of the Race: Improving his position the most over the course of the race was Joey Hanssen (No. 40 Prime Champ Dodge) for the second time this season. The 17-year-old native of Holland started 19th on the grid before navigating his way to a season-best finish of eighth. As a result, he earned the $1,000 award from Coca-Cola.

 

MAHLE Clevite Engine Builder of the Race: In a new program for 2009, the driver who compiles the most points in a specialized system involving qualifying, race finish and leading laps collects the $1,000 award.  Thomson won the race and led the most laps (106).

Ranger Closing In On Second Series Title

 

It's to the point that the scenarios that don’t end with Andrew Ranger as the 2009 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Mobil 1 champion almost have to include him oversleeping and missing one of the final two races or opting to stay home to paint his kitchen.

 

Nonetheless, the math says that his 138-point lead over DJ Kennington heading into this Saturday's Komatsu 300 at Riverside Int'l Speedway in Antigonish, N.S., isn't quite enough to wrap up the 2009 title. In fact, in addition to Kennington, Ron Beauchamp Jr. and defending series champion Scott Steckly have a mathematical chance of hoisting the trophy.

 

The simple fact of the matter is that the options for each of those three are dwindling.

 

Short of Ranger physically not making it to an event, one of the three challengers would have to win both the final races of the season and lead the most laps while Ranger does not lead a lap and finish dead last.

 

"(Ranger) has had a great year. They have no bad luck, but that's what it takes in this series," said Steckly. "We had a pretty fortunate year last year when we won."

 

If Ranger closes it out, it will be his second series championship in three years having won the inaugural title in 2007 for the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series.

 

"We've been right with them at almost all of the races," said Kennington. "They've just been so strong that none of us really had too much of a chance to make up significant ground."

 

"We've just tried to keep it simple and take one race at a time," Ranger said.

 

In each of the first two season in series history, the battle for the points championship was not decided until the final event of the year at Kawartha Speedway in Fraserville, Ont.

The NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Mobil 1 wraps up its third season of competition and crowns the 2009 series champion following the Z-Line Designs presented by The Dodge Dealers of Ontario at Kawartha Speedway in Fraserville, Ont., on Saturday, Sept. 26.

 

It will be the third visit to the track for the series. In each of the first two visits the race was won by a first-time winner. In 2007, Scott Steckly picked up his first series win as Andrew Ranger won the inaugural series title. Last year, Jason Hathaway earned his initial win while Steckly was crowned as the champion..

 

Also, last year's event was shortened due to rain becoming the first and, to date, the only series race to have that happen.

 

The .375-mile oval is opposite Dover (Del.) Int'l Speedway as the horse track is on the outside of the speedway.

Targa Newfoundland Leg 3 Report

NEWFOUNDLAND - The weather co-operated Wednesday, but the backroads of Newfoundland are presenting their usual challenges at Targa 2009.

Forty-nine competitors started Leg 3 at Gander, down from the 52 that left St. John’s just two days earlier. By lunch, it looked like two more teams were out, but only one of the teams didn’t log a finish at Gooseberry Cove before heading to Vernon Smith’s spectacular Toy Shop at Swift Current.

While the stages from the airport town took a bit less of a mechanical toll on the Targa parade, the timing clocks were another story.

According to unofficial results, only four teams managed to finish the without collecting penalty seconds, including overall and Classic leaders Glen Clarke and Andy Proudfoot who sit alone penalty free for the three days.

Modern leader Steve Millen took another six seconds of penalty but held on to a 21-second gap over the next modern car Porsche GT3 RS of Tom Collingwood and navigator Chris Collingwood.

Cars leave the Marystown arena at 8 a.m. Thursday for stages around the Burin Peninsula, returning to the stadium for a second car show Thursday night.

Capital City Legends Qualifier

STITTSVILLE, ON - This past week, Capital City Speedway in Ottawa hosted the Legends Racing National Qualifier event. The winner of each class earns an entry to the 2009 National Championship Race in Atlanta, Georgia in October.

The 30 lap feature was a heated battle to the last lap, producing an exciting day for the record setting crowd in attendance. Brandon Shipman took the young lions win, while rookie Matthew Haufe earned the Semi-Pro victory.

Chad Windsor and Kevin Foisy won the Pro and Masters features, respectively. Congratulations and good luck to the winners.

Targa Newfoundland: Leg 2 Report

NEWFOUNDLAND - The rain threatened to bless Targa Newfoundland competitors for Leg 2 Tuesday, but the skies cleared and left drivers and spectators cheering by the end of the day.

The sun even peeked out for the jewel of the stage — lunch at Leading Tickles. Although, the drivers would likely argue the day’s final run through the streets of Gander is the real treasure.

With the second day in the books, the overall lead has solidified, unofficially, with Glen Clarke and stage homeboy Andy Proudfoot logging the soul zero for the day on that final stage.

Division leaders also emerged at the end of the long day, with Clarke’s Porsche 911 Carrera. Steve Millen and navigator Mike Montiello has the best time in Modern, accumulating six seconds of penalty.

The Touring class proved a challenge as well, although there are still eight teams showing no penalty points.

Five cars didn’t make it back to the Gander Community Centre, mostly succumbing to the rigours of the Newfoundland roads. However, the Subaru Impreza of Roger Tillotson and Steve Robertson did roll off the course in Pleasentview. Navigator Robertson was injured, but he was sharing his new war story, with a laugh, beside a very injured car carrying its latest sign. It said Yard Sale.

Leg 3 begins Wednesday morning with a stage in Mainpoint, and calls it a day in Marystown.

GRAND-AM: AIM Autosport geared up for Miller Motorsport Park

AIM Autosport geared up for Miller Motorsport Park... Team is poised for another top five result in championship

Woodbridge, Ontario (2009.09.15) Heading into the final two races of the season, AIM Autosport has something to look forward to as well as the opportunity to take care of some unfinished business in the 2009 Rolex Sports Car Series presented by Crown Royal Cask No. 16. After ten races, the AIM Autosport No. 61 Ford Riley with drivers Mark Wilkins (CAN) and Burt Frisselle (USA) sits in a tie for sixth overall in the championship with fifth place within its grasp. Of course a lot depends on the fortunes of the other teams during the final two events. Ideally, AIM can match its overall performance in the 2008 championship.

While the team could sit as high as fifth at the end of the year, it belies the fact that AIM has yet to reach the podium in 2009. They have come close (4th at Laguna, 5th at New Jersey and Mid Ohio) but it must be noted that the season is not over yet and overall, the team has improved on its performance. In 2008, the average finishing position for the No. 61 Ford Riley after ten races was 10th, including the win at Montreal. After ten races so far in 2009, the average finishing position is 8th (7.7). With two opportunities left to reach the podium, everyone on the team is working hard to reach that particular goal.

"Getting a podium result is the ultimate goal" commented team principal Ian Willis, "but a strong finish and championship points go a long way toward making a successful season. Last year we had three DNF's that hurt us but 2009 has seen us cross the checkered flag nine out of ten times. The reliability factor is what has kept AIM in the fight and on track for a possible top five overall."

Going into the race Miller Motorsport Park, the team is confident they can produce a good result. In 2008, when the race was 1000 Km, the No. 61 Ford Riley finished sixth and was running strong early, leading the race at one point and running third at the three hour mark. This could be significant seeing this year's race will run the standard two hours and forty-five minutes.

"Last year at Miller we were running great in the early stages" noted Mark Wilkins, "but we fell off a bit toward the end. Sixth was a good result but after the race everyone on the team was wishing it had been a 250-miler as that would have given us our fourth straight podium. But that of course is wishful thinking."

Wilkins continued, "We just need to take that attitude and the strengths we have been working on all season, plus the fact it is a sprint race this weekend and shoot for the podium. Miller is a tough track with its twenty-four turns, but Burt and I have been training hard and the team has been working hard to give us a great car. We are certainly looking to end the season on a strong note."

The Utah 250 at Miller Motorsport Park takes place on Saturday, September 19 at 3:30 p.m. MT (5:30 p.m. ET) and will be broadcast live on SPEED TV.

ACT INVITATIONAL AT NHMS FILLED WITH 24 PAST CHAMPIONS

Waterbury, VT – The field is set for the inaugural American Canadian Tour (ACT) Invitational to be held this weekend at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway (NHMS) in Loudon, NH. The 36-car field for the historic first-ever Late Model stock car race is filled with the best short track drivers in the Northeastern US and provinces of Quebec and Ontario, Canada. The $65,000 event is slated to take green at 5:30 Saturday afternoon, following the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series 'Heluva Good! 200'.

ACT teams from throughout the Northeast have spent the past six months battling each other for a coveted spot in what will be the most unique racing opportunity most have had in their careers.

Veteran racer from Barre, VT, Joey Laquerre said, "This has to be the highpoint of my 50-plus years of racing. I had so much fun at the 'test and tune' (over 50 ACT teams were invited to a test session at NHMS in August) and I really wanted to get an invitation to this race. I hope this will be good for the future of Late Model racing. I think it is just great for the young kids like Joey 'Pole' (Polewarczyk), those two 16- and 17-year olds, (Brandon Watson from Stayner, ON and Joey Doiron from Berwick, ME). They are the future, but I wish I could be starting all over again with them. They are going to have a lot of fun racing in the next ten years or so". Laquerre was a former Thunder Road Track Champion and has raced at just about every track in New England for over 5 decades, in just about every kind of stock car.

The starting grid for the ACT Invitational will have twenty-four former and present Track Champions and Series Champions. Three of the hottest drivers in ACT racing represent each of the Touring Series which the sanctioning body manages.

Montreal's Patrick Laperle has the most wins entering the Invitational, with four (4). Laperle is contending to win his second Série ACT Castrol Championship on Sunday, following the NHMS event. He is chasing two-time Castrol Série Champion Donald Theetge from Quebec City, who leads the Series by 33 points going into the 300 lap finale at Autodrome Ste. Eustache outside of Montreal. Laperle will receive a $2,000 bonus for his 4 Invitational wins.

Veteran driver Brent Dragon from Milton, VT enters the Invitational with three qualifier wins and is coming off an impressive third place finish after starting twelfth at the Fall Foliage 300 at the Airborne Speedway in Plattsburgh last Sunday afternoon. Dragon battled eventual winner Laperle for over 100 laps in the final half of the event, swapping the official lead a half dozen times. Laperle won the 300-lap event, but only after running out of fuel while pitting during the final caution, on lap 255.

Former NHMS Track Champion, and now full-time ACT competitor, Brian Hoar of Williston, VT took over the ACT Tour point lead following the Fall Foliage 300. Hoar leads Scott Payea, of Milton, VT by 28 points going into the final event of the campaign at Oxford Plains Speedway on October 11^th. "I really am not thinking about the ACT title with the Invitational in front of us. When I was racing on the old NASCAR Busch East Series, this was a place I just loved to come to. Being named as the NHMS Track Champion ranks right up there with my five ACT titles. I can't wait until 5:30 on Saturday, and I think fans are going to have some fun also. During the testing we found out that these cars can draft, carry big speed through the corners, and that the outside lane is the place to be. That should provide a good combination for putting on a great show. MY RPM team is pumped up and ready", said Hoar.

Nine tracks from throughout the Northeast and Canada will be sending their 2009 champions to the ACT Invitational, along with 6 other past track champions from throughout the region. There are 5 ACT TOUR Champions entered, 3 Serie Castrol Champions and a multi-time PASS Super Late Model Champion.

"The starting field for this event will be the very best 36-car field in the 25-year history of ACT racing. These teams all deserve to be here based on what they have accomplished either in the Qualifiers or in their racing careers, and we are proud to have them represent ACT and Late Model racing. NASCAR announces 2010 National Series schedules... Montreal Nationwide Aug. 29, 2010

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Sept. 15, 2009) – NASCAR announced today the 2010 schedules for its three national series, which will open their seasons at Daytona International Speedway on the weekend of Feb. 12-14, and conclude at Homestead-Miami Speedway on the weekend of Nov. 19-21.

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will again have a 36-race schedule starting with the Daytona 500 on Feb. 14, plus two “non-point” events – the Feb. 6 Budweiser Shootout at Daytona and the May 22 NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race at Lowe’s Motor Speedway.

Other key dates for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series include:

June 27 and Sept. 19 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, the respective openers in the “Race to the Chase” and the “Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup”; the Coca-Cola 600 on May 30 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway; the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on July 25; and the annual “Chase cut-off race” at Richmond International Raceway on Sept. 11.

The NASCAR Nationwide Series will again race 35 times, while the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series will again have 25 events, including one of the most intriguing additions to the schedule in the series’ 15-year history: a new event at Pocono Raceway’s 2.5-mile triangle-shaped track on July 31, as a companion to one of the two traditional NASCAR Sprint Cup Series weekends there. The Pocono truck race will be the only new event on any of the three series’ schedules. It replaces the truck series’ previous February event at Auto Club Speedway.

There will be some significant “shuffling” of events in 2010, compared to the current season’s schedules.

In the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series:

*       Qualifying for the Daytona 500 will be held on Saturday, Feb. 6, the same day as the Budweiser Shootout. Previously, qualifying was held the day after the shootout.
*       The season’s first Dover International Speedway race will be on May 16, before the all-star race and the Coca-Cola 600 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. Dover traditionally has followed that consecutive two-week stop in Charlotte.
*       Phoenix International Raceway’s first race will be April 10, with Texas Motor Speedway’s first event April 18. Previously, Texas went first in April.
*       Also, the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will have four “off” weeks including the traditional Easter holiday on April 4.

In the NASCAR Nationwide Series:

*       A Nashville-Phoenix-Texas run on April 3, April 9 and April 17 will replace a Texas-Nashville-Phoenix spring lineup.
*       The first Dover race will be run earlier than usual, on May 15, in companion to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.

In the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series:

*       The Kansas Speedway race will be May 2, one week later.
*       The series’ race at Dover, as in the other two national series, will be held two weeks earlier, on May 14, kicking off a national series tripleheader weekend.
*       The Iowa Speedway and Gateway International Raceway events will be two months earlier, on July 11 and 16.
*       Nashville Superspeedway’s date moves a week later, to Aug. 7.
*       Kentucky Speedway’s date moves from July to Sept. 3.
