NASCAR TRUCKS: Timothy Peters Wins Wild NextEra Energy Resources 250

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series once again provided fans with a thrilling finish as the first 10 trucks to take the checkered flag in the NextEra Energy Resources 250 did so within .500 seconds of each other.

Leading the pack was the No. 17 Toyota of Timothy Peters, who captured his first win at historic Daytona International Speedway and the second NASCAR Camping World Truck Series win of his career.

“I can’t believe it,” Peters said of the win. “To win here at Daytona is just unbelievable. Look at the history that this place has behind it. To get out of that truck and to get soaked with Gatorade from the guys, knowing that you’re in Victory Lane at Daytona – it just sends chills down my back. It’s an awesome feeling.”

Peters made his move on leader and two-time defending NextEra Energy Resources 250 champion Todd Bodine on the Superstretch on the final lap and benefited from a push by eventual third-place finisher Dennis Setzer in the No. 46 Dodge. The Virginia native is a popular victor in the garage -- even with second-place finisher Bodine.

“Timmy just did it right,” Bodine said.  “He’s a great race car driver. He’s a good kid. If I had to lose, he’s a good one to lose to.”

“It’s disappointing for sure,” Bodine continued. “But, it’s a great way to start the year with a second (place finish).”

Today’s announcement extends what has been a long-term relationship for NHRA with all three entities.  ESPN International distribution in 2010 will reach more than 19 million households in more than 138 countries and territories around the world.   TSN has been the exclusive broadcast partner in Canada for nine years, and plans on broadcasting more than 70 hours of final round coverage of 2010 NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series events.    American Forces Network, in 175 countries and U.S. Territories, will continue to make NHRA programming available to U.S. Armed Forces television stations located outside the United States.

Of course, NHRA’s international reach goes beyond its broadcast partners.  NHRA has long maintained NHRA Member Tracks throughout North America, including Puerto Rico.

"Beyond the Dirt" with Darren Pallen

Kaz Grafix photo

by Greg Cybulski - Darren Pallen has come full circle and returned to his roots in dirt track racing. Twenty years ago, Pallen ventured into the world of open wheel racing by racing a Mini-Sprint with the Manitoba Mini-Sprint Association. For the next four years, he went on to win several track championships at Grand Forks Speedway in Grand Forks, Norh Dakota and Greenbush Race Park in Greenbush, Minnesota.

Darren also traveled and competed in several larger Mini-Sprint events in the United States.. He placed third at the 1991 U.S. Mini-Sprint Nationals in Newcastle, Wyoming. His greatest highlight, however, was winning the 1994 Florida Speedweeks Mini-Sprint Championship at Volusia County Speedway.

In 1995, Pallen graduated to the tougher and much more expensive full-size Sprint Car class. Success was limited with some heat wins until he finally broke into the feature winner's circle in 1997.

At the end of 1997, Darren decided to pursue an announcing opportunity at Victory Lane Speedway in Winnipeg, Manitoba where he could be heard weekly with his announcing partner Pat Mooney for the next twelve years. In addition, Darren has also announced at numerous Monster Jam and Motocross events.

In 2008, Pallen's desire to return to his roots in racing along with a growing interest by local racers started the creation of the Northern Lightning Sprint Association. In 2009, NLSA President Darren Pallen realized his dream as the Lightning Sprints ran their inaugural season at Winnipeg's Red River Co-op Speedway. As the 2010 season approaches, the man responsible for Manitoba's fastest growing car class shares his thoughts....

Greg Cybulski: First of all, congratulations on your first season as President of the NLSA. Following an 11 year absence from racing, what was it like for you to get back into racing a Lightning Sprint?
Darren Pallen: Thanks Greg. Getting back into racing was a huge eye-opener for me. I completely forgot about the level of dedication and organization required to run a successful race team. Coupled with my Presidency with the Northern Lightning Sprint Association and being a dealer for Bailey Chassis Company, it is pretty safe to say that I didn’t get much time to devote to my real job! It was all a much larger undertaking than I ever thought possible, but like everything else in the world, hard work paid off. I can truly say I learned a lot about racing, about racing cars, and most importantly about people.

GC: Many racers have a story behind the number they run on their car. What is the significance of #11 to Darren Pallen?
DP: The number 11 came to me at a very early age. As a youngster, I used to go over to my grandpa and grandma’s house quite often. Two doors down from them was a family that went by the last name of Holden. Ray Holden was the driver of this particular #11 car, and I distinctly remember that his car was always covered by a bright orange tarp when they weren’t working on it. Anyway, I recall telephoning my grandpa each time my parents were about to drive me over to ask him if the #11 car had the tarp off. When my grandpa told me that the tarp was indeed off and the crew was working on the car, I couldn’t get my parents to drive me there fast enough. Every time I arrived, I was treated like gold. My highlight was when Ray presented me with an official “11” racing t-shirt, which I think I wore to elementary school for the next two weeks solid. I was so proud, and I was hooked for life.

GC: You were very competitive and finished a close second to Roland Bernard. What are your impressions of the NLSA's inaugural champion?
DP: Roland Bernard and his team are a group that every race team should model themselves after. They are dedicated, conscientious, clean on the race track, and great people away from the race track. Win or lose (with losing not being too often for Roland) they were always gentlemanly. They were a big part of our extensive promotional program, and it would have been very difficult to build the Northern Lightning Sprint Association without this team. Really, what more can you ask for from a champion? Now, we need to go out and find twenty more teams just like Roland’s. Then, I can sit back and call the Northern Lightning Sprint Association a true success.

GC: The membership of the NLSA is a very diverse group of people coming from different racing backgrounds. What is it about the NLSA that makes it an attractive option for racers?
DP: Without question, the Northern Lightning Sprint Association encompasses a diverse group of individuals, but at the end of the day we seem to be working towards the same common goal. Almost all of us have been around racing in one form or another, and we have seen some of the nastiness that goes on in other classes. Our drivers realize that in order to make this a successful organization, we need to roll out the welcome mat for new drivers and teams rather than display a whole bunch of bickering in the pits. Racing is an expensive sport and the payouts are very low, so if this isn’t about fun, then what’s it about? Having fun and being competitive is what we want to do at the Northern Lightning Sprint Association.

GC: The NLSA is very strict on it's rules and the consequences for those who break them. This appears to be the cornerstone of the organization. Is this a fair statement?
DP: That is absolutely a fair statement, Greg. The Northern Lightning Sprint Association is committed to growing an organization that plays by the rules. Unfortunately, everyone in the industry thinks that cheating is just part of racing. And while that may or may not be true, we are at least trying to discount that theory when it comes to our organization. Tight rules means better racing and better growth. That is our ultimate goal with the NLSA.

GC: Was there any one moment that stood out as a highlight for you as the President or as a competitor from 2009?
DP: For me, the highlight of the season was actually an event called “Cruisin’ Dauphin”, located in Dauphin, Manitoba. We took the Northern Lightning Sprint Association to this northern Manitoba town and gave the crowd their first taste of Lightning Sprint Racing. Our group signed autographs, allowed young fans to sit in their cars, and did a great job showing true professionalism. Cruisin’ Dauphin had always been a great motorsports event on its own, yet our class went up there and added yet another dimension. We couldn’t have been happier with the result.

GC: Now that you have a year under your belt, as President, what are your hopes for the NLSA this year?
DP: For 2010, our hope is to continue with our mandate of providing safe, fast, fun, and affordable open wheel racing. Our recent rules meeting produced no rule changes, which saves everyone money in the long run. So, we are going to hit the start button, step on the gas, and see what 2010 will bring for the Northern Lightning Sprint Association.

GC: If you could look into a crystal ball, where would you like to see the NLSA in five years from now?
DP: Five years from now I would like to see the Northern Lightning Sprint Association with 30-35 cars on a nightly basis. Given our first-year growth and the level of interest in this area and across the border into North Dakota, I believe this is a very achievable goal. We are working towards fundraisers to help increase payouts and cover travel expenses, which I think will be a key to our growth.

GC: Sponsorship is key to helping pay the racing bills. Who are some of your sponsors?
DP: Sponsorship certainly helps to pay the bills, although I hate to use the word “sponsorship”. For me, the words “marketing partner” suggests an agreement where the advertiser gives you something (money or product) and you reciprocate with some out-of-the-box promotions away from the race track. Some of the companies we will be working with in 2010 include Dynasty Bathrooms, Bailey Chassis Company, Dave’s Signspot, TP Wings, Advanced Racing Suspension, Associated Crankshaft Services, MASS Merchandising & Sales, Darren Pallen Productions, Commandline Web Design, Adam’s Detailing Products, and PrairieDirtDigest.com

GC: As we conclude this interview, would you tell the fans what changes they can expect to see from Darren Pallen in 2010 and how that came about?
DP: I will be competing in two classes for 2010; Lightning Sprints and Super Trucks. Having only Lightning Sprint/Sprint Car experience, I believe the Super Truck is going to be quite an adjustment. You are dealing with a big, wide, 2800 pound truck with about 400 horsepower. Conversely, the Lightning Sprint weighs just 950 pounds with driver and produces 150 horsepower. The lap times are much faster in the Lightning Sprint than in the truck, and I imagine the superior handling characteristics of the sprint car are largely responsible for the difference in lap times. I think I will be faced with learning to drive a vehicle with a less favorable power-to-weight ratio and handling that may not approach that of the sprint car. This, I think, will be the most difficult adjustment for me as a driver.

We are very excited to welcome Dynasty Bathrooms as a marketing partner in 2010. Ken Onsowich is the owner of Dynasty Bathrooms, and his company has been in business in Winnipeg since 1984. Ken purchased the Super Truck this year and asked me to drive. After a couple of meetings, Ken and I realized we shared the same goals regarding marketing both at and away from the race tracks. Ken loves to market his company in many innovative ways, and that fit well with our Lightning Sprint program. Several meetings later, we were a team. We have a great crew with lots of experience and everyone shares a positive attitude. We want to win as badly as everyone, but we also realize the value of making racing enjoyable for all. If we are not having fun, there’s no point doing it. It’s not like we are making money out there, so let’s at least enjoy the ride.

LINARES RACING BECOMES FIRST-EVER VENEZUELAN TEAM TO ENTER STAR MAZDA CHAMPIONSHIP AS THE SERIES CONTINUES TO GROW IN ITS 20TH YEAR OF COMPETITION

Brownsburg, IN (Feb. 10, 2010) – Linares Racing today announced that it will become the first-ever Venezuelan team to enter the Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear. The team, owned by Gustavo Linares (brother of famed Venezuelan karting champion Carlos Linares), takes delivery of its first brand-new Star Mazda single-seater today and will begin the 2010 season fielding a car for the 2009 Venezuelan national FF1600 champion Carlos Linares with backing from IND, Venezuela's National Institute of Sport.

Linares, born on June 20, 1992, has been karting since age 7 and competed two seasons in the Venezuelan FF1600 series before winning the championship last season with a record of two victories and seven podium finishes. He has also tested with the Campos Racing F3 team in Spain.

"The United States offers a lot of opportunities for a young driver like me and I'm really happy to be running in a high-profile series like the Star Mazda Championship," says Linares. "With the MAZDASPEED Ladder and the Indy Racing League's 'Road to Indy' program both working to help Star Mazda drivers, I feel that I am heading toward my goal of competing in the Indy 500."
Bringing an additional dimension of top-level expertise to the team will be Rob Ridgely, who engineered Venezuelan driver E.J. Viso's car on the HVM Indy Car team during the 2009 season. The widely-experienced Crew Chief will be Claudio Novoa, a veteran of the Barber Dodge Pro Series, Indy Lights with Andersen Racing and several Indy Car teams, including Team Minardi, Roth Racing and Team Rahal. The new Linares Racing team, headquartered near the heart of the Indy Car racing community at a facility in Brownsburg, Indiana, will have its first test of car, driver and personnel at Sebring on March 3.

"The Star Mazda Championship is a professional, intensely competitive series that attracts rising stars from around the world like Carlos Linares," says Ridgely. "This is a new team, but they are going about it in a very professional way and I believe that the two-year program we have planned to develop Carlos into a top driver is very realistic. And the plans they have for the future are very exciting. I'm delighted to be part of Linares Racing."

Linares Racing will expand to a two-car effort later in the season when Carlos' Linares brother, Gustavo, joins the team. Currently in his first year of college in Indiana, Gustavo Linares drove several Star Mazda Championship races during the 2009 season.

"We looked at entering many different series for our team, but the Star Mazda Championship made the most sense now and for the future of our team, our drivers and our sponsors," says Linares Racing team owner Gustavo Linares. "We have a two-year plan to compete in the Star Mazda Championship before expanding our team to include the Firestone Indy Lights series. We hope to be able to help other young Venezuelan and South American drivers advance their careers in this country, and we've also had interest from American and European drivers, so we are confident that Linares Racing is on the right track."

The first race of the 2010 Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear takes place on March 19, during the 12 Hours of Sebring weekend. Round 2 is the following weekend, March 26-28, in the streets of St. Petersburg, Florida with the Indy Racing League.
Media inquiries, as well as requests for further information about driving and commercial opportunities at Linares Racing, should be directed to Gustavo Linares at 317.418.5054 or Claudio Novoa at 954.326.1404.

About the Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear
For 2010, the Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear will feature an 11-weekend, 13-race schedule in the U.S. and Canada, most on major race weekends with American Le Mans, the Indy Racing League and USAC. Rising stars from around the world will compete for prizes valued at $1.5 million and benefit from two prestigious driver development programs, including the MAZDASPEED Motorsports Driver Development Ladder and the Indy Racing League's 'Road to Indy' program. The Star Mazda Championship features standing starts, wheel-to-wheel racing at 150 mph and budgets a fraction of other top open-wheel ladder series.

Subaru Canada's Richard/Ockwell show dominating speed- Fastest car in the field nets no points

MANIWAKI, QC, FEB 8 2010 - Subaru Canada Rally Team driver Patrick Richard and his co-driver Alan Ockwell made an impressive start in their campaign to win their third consecutive Canadian Rally Championship, at the 2010 Rallye Perce Neige, held this past weekend near Maniwaki, QC, Canada. Overcoming an early deficit, the pair clearly demonstrated that they were the fastest team in the field, but an unknown mechanical issue on the events 9th stage forced the team to withdraw, meaning the defending Canadian champions failed to score any points at the first event of the 2010 championship season.

"We were running pretty strong, and we were getting ready to re-claim the lead," explained co-driver Alan Ockwell, of Toronto, ON. "But on a road section we noticed an odd sound coming from the engine bay. Despite that, we started the stage, but when the warning lights came up on the instruments, we pulled over and that was that. We still dont know what caused the problem but the mechanics will be going over it when we get back."

Despite retiring from the event, Richard and Ockwell both remained buoyant for the remainder of the season. Driving a Subaru Impreza STI prepared by Rocket Rally Racing, of Squamish, BC, the team was able to dramatically claw back an early deficit, putting on a great show for fans and specatators lining the ice covered roads. An off-road excursion on the first stage of the event saw the team momentarily lie in 50th position out of a total of 55 entires. Once repairs were effected, the team dominated the remainder of the event, winning every stage but one, and at times being nearly 2 seconds per kilometer faster than their nearest championship rivals. This raw demonstration of speed put the team firmly into a podium position and in contention for the lead of the event when they had their problem.

"As usual, if I put myself in a position where I need to respond with really fast times, its not a problem, but it puts a lot of stress on the equipment, and the co-driver," joked four time Canadian Champion Patrick Richard. "Its too bad we couldn't finish the event, as we had already reclaimed all of the time we had lost at the beginning, and we were having a lot of fun in the process."

It was also a fantastic debut for the team's new tire supplier, Yokohama Tire Canada. Having recently signed a deal with Yokohama to run ADVAN Motorsport tires for the entire 2010 Canadian Rally Championship, the driver was adamant that running their tires was the right choice. "In Canada, unlike in most other rally championships world-wide, drivers must compete on ice covered roads without using any studs, meaning tire choice and selection is critical. On the ice and snow, the Yokohama product clearly gave us an advantage over the rest of the field, and we wouldn't have been the fastest car out there without them."

Despite not scoring any points at this seasons' opening event, the team's primary championship rivals also did not fare very well, with the 2009 Championship runner up also failing to score points due to an off-road excursion. "With all the championship contenders falling to finish, the championship is basically going to re-start at the next rally, and with the speed we've shown we're confident for the rest of the season."

The next round of the 2010 Canadian Rally Championship will be the Rocky Mountain Rally, held in Calgary, AB. All events of the 2010 Canadian Rally Championship are televised nationally in English on TSN and TSN2, and in French on RDS. The Canadian Rally Championship is also internationally broadcast in Europe/Asia on MotorsTV, please check your local listings for details.

Rocket Rally Racing is based in Squamish, BC, Canada and operates the Subaru Rally Team Canada on behalf of Subaru Canada, with associate sponsors Yokohama Tire, Gulf Lubricants, Vision-X Lighting, Crawford Performance and ACT providing product support for the 2010 championship campaign.

Canadians Take top Honours in BMWCCA Club Racing

Toronto, ON - Feb 8th/2010 - It is my distinct pleasure to announce that Peter Carroll has just been confirmed as the BMWCCA Club Racing C-Modified National Champion (again).

This is a ‘threepeat’ for RAVEN Racers. 2009 is the third year running that a RAVEN driver has taken this North American Title. Also, positions number two and three on the podium this year are occupied by Allan Lewis and Mark Marquis – so it’s RAVEN 1, 2, 3 in 2009! We are a small group of Canadians competing in what is essentially an American Series, but we seem to be making a bit of a mark.

Congratulations to Peter, Allan and Mark for an excellent effort in 2009. 2010 should prove to be a very interesting season because it looks like we might just be our own best competition again. Good luck and safe racing to all….

Cheers,

John Dimoff

Canadian Rally Championship: Bruno Carré takes first national win at Rallye Perce-Neige

Maniwaki (Quebec), Feb. 7, 2010.- Icy conditions and mechanical issues took their toll on the field of 54 entrants at the 2010 Rallye Perce Neige on Saturday. Only 36 cars made it to the finish of the first round of the 2010 Canadian Rally Championship, presented by Subaru and supported by Yokohama.

Calculated and cautious driving by Bruno Carré (Laval, QC) and co-driver Yvan Joyal brought the pair their first National Championship win. "You couldn't push too hard because you would get caught somewhere" said a happy Carré at the finish, "The snowbanks were very small and you couldn't lean on them."

Without special tractionized ice tires, Mathieu L'Estage (St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, QC) and Yanick Napert were hoping just to stay on the road. A cautious approach and skilful drive landed them second place, the highest overall finish of their career. "I think Bruno and I are the two guys who never went off the road today, so that was the key to doing well here," said L'Estage, "It's a good start for the season, so now we'll try and get the car ready for Rocky Mountain Rally."

Rounding out the podium, Craig Henderson (St-Constant, QC) and Co-Driver Lyne Murphy had resigned themselves to a mid-pack finish after getting stuck in a snowbank, then stopping to help pull Antoine L'Estage back on the road later in the day. The good karma must have paid off, because the duo found themselves in third place at the finish.

Defending champions Patrick Richard (Squamish, BC) and Co-Driver, Alan Ockwell (Toronto, ON) of the Subaru Rally Team Canada were struck with bad luck early in the event. The pair left the first stage on a corner that later claimed several cars, but they were able to get back on the road after losing only two minutes. In their push to reclaim the lost time they posted a string of stage wins before retiring from the rally early with a mechanical problem.

Their main rivals, Antoine L'Estage and Nathalie Richard (Ste-Jean-Sur-Richelieu, QC) looked set to repeat last year's win until they also suffered a series of setbacks. A two-minute lead was dashed when they spun into a snowbank on the treacherous Kitigan Zibi stage. Mechanical problems followed and led to a small fire that thwarted their comeback fight on the penultimate stage. They finished out of the points in sixteenth position.

With the attrition at the front of the rally, Leo Urlichich (Thornhill, ON) and Co-Driver Martin Headland, who are always contenders for the podium, led the rally for three stages also went off the road. While the incident only caused light damage to their car, the team took too much time in the ditch and finished in 13th place.

With Urlichich and other competition by the wayside, defending North Americain Rally Cup Champion Andrew Comrie-Picard (Toronto, ON) and Jeremy Wimpey drove flat out to try and reel in Bruno Carré for the win. Their charge ended when they slid off on the road on the challenging final stage. The team got back on the road, finishing the rally in 12th place.

With an impressive drive in a two-wheel drive car, Jon Nichols and Carl Shenk (Lachine, Quebec) beat a lot of high-powered all wheel drive cars to a sixth place overall finish. The series veterans hadn't competed in a two-wheel drive car since 2006, but drove hard to make up for the lack of traction, finishing nearly six minutes ahead of their closest two-wheel drive competition.

The championship battle will resume at the Rocky Mountain Rally near Calgary, Alberta in May. New faces on top of the championship standings should bring a lot of teams out west for the second round of the championship.

The Canadian Rally Championship is comprised of six events held nationwide in a season that extends from February to November. The series is presented by Subaru Canada, supported by Yokohama Tire Canada and features contingency programs from Subaru Canada and Mitsubishi Canada. The Canadian Association of Rallysport (CARS) is the official sanctioning body for rallying in Canada.

Rally car racing is often described simply as "real cars, real roads, real fast." The all-season motorsport sees drivers and their co-drivers take modified road cars to the limit as they achieve blistering speeds over closed-road courses that typically cover more than 150 kilometers of gravel, dirt or snow-covered roads. Fans can get up close to the cars in the service areas and catch all the action from specially designated spectator points located at the best spots on the route.

Full coverage of the championship will air on RDS and TSN. Check local listings.

New Yokohama social media campaign will meet consumers on their own terms

LANGLEY, B.C. (February 8, 2010) – Yokohama Tire (Canada) Inc. will meet it’s newest customers where they live – on-line – in a bold initiative to use digital media to reach a broad spectrum of consumers with news, information and attractive offers on Yokohama tires.

Yokohama Canada has launched a suite of new social media channels, including a blog, a Facebook page, a Twitter feed, a YouTube channel and Flickr presence, to offer the latest in product information and interactive fun to customers seeking a better understanding of the company and its products. The multi-pronged initiative is the most ambitious approach to digital media of any tire company in Canada.

Yokohama will use the various channels to offer an array of information to interested consumers, from updates on the company’s involvement in the high-action sport of rallying, to the latest information on ‘green’ products like the new Yokohama dB Super E-spec tires for hybrid cars.

The company will also create cross-promotions with retail partners through channels like Twitter, in which followers of both companies can roll-up the special offers from both organizations to maximize their savings. “The most successful ventures in digital media are the most authentic efforts to reach consumers and have an honest, straight-forward dialogue,” says Jonathon Karelse, marketing manager for Yokohama Canada. “We’re passionate about cars and tires, and we hope that comes across in our encounters with consumers through social media. We like the subject and we are happy to share our enthusiasm with the people who feel the same way.” All the channels can be accessed by the Yokohama website (www.yokohama.ca) as well as directly through their respective platforms.

The launch of the interactive initiative is in parallel with the company’s extensive advertising, point of sale and promotional activity aimed at consumer and trade audiences across Canada.

Yokohama Tire (Canada) Inc. markets and distributes a full line of tires for high performance, passenger car, light truck, and commercial truck applications, as well as off-the-road tires for mining, forestry and construction applications. It maintains distribution centres across Canada to serve more than 700 independent tire dealers and more than 2,000 retail locations.

New Smyrna Speedway: Hooker Brothers Racing - Post Race Update #3 from Florida

(February 7, 2010 Report) The last Canadian heading to Florida must have left the door open as cool temperatures were blowing in from the north as Hooker Brothers Racing headed to New Smyrna Speedway on Super Bowl Sunday. Racing was scheduled to start at 4:00pm to allow teams time to watch the football game later in the day. The Hooker crew removed the tires to check the brakes and immediately found the problem that caused the loose condition going into the corner during the previous night of racing. Due to narrowing up the track width, the right rear tire had made contact with the spring pocket and the rubbing was putting drag on the rear, causing the 'loose in' condition.

The crew repaired the problem, adjusted the brakes and went out for practice to confirm that they had in fact fixed the handling problem. Driver Kirk Hooker was happy with the car despite not being able to turn it as well as he wanted to in the centre of the corner. A stiffer right rear spring was put in the car and the gears were changed to lower the RPMs. The motor was singing a little high as the car was getting through the corners better than in the past, bringing the speed up down the straightaway.

With the inversion from the previous night's race, the #38 Delaware Speedway Chevy lined up on the outside pole for the 25 lap feature. At the drop of the green flag, Kirk soon found himself as the meat in the sandwich as he was three wide down the backstretch. By the halfway mark, Hooker was battling for fifth.  pulled ahead of the #47 and the #38 who were in a battle for 4th. The #47 broke going into turn four just as Kirk was running hard on his tail and the two made contact due to the sudden change of speed by the #47.

The caution came out and the track sent Hooker to the back for spinning the #47. But some quick talking by Randy Hooker with track officials and the spotter for the #47 car changed their minds and Kirk was given his position back. Kirk raced hard over the final laps to come home fifth. He later reported that he lost oil pressure as the race was winding down so the crew went to work checking the oil filter for debris. With the filter looking fine, the crew put on a new Wix filter and refilled the engine with Lucas oil. The oil pressure returned and after fixing minor damage from getting into the #47, the crew watched the final two races and then headed back to the condo to enjoy the Super Bowl.

Team BRP to launch assault on victory lane at Volusia

St. Catharines, Ontario – (February 5) With Pete Bicknell himself perhaps the final driver to score a win in 2009 – one of the largest ever contingents of Team BRP drivers are all looking to be among the first to win in 2010. Bicknell’s December pre-Christmas win of course came in his first ever visit to the Maryborough Speedway during a whirlwind tour of Queensland Australia – capping off a 670 plus win season for the cutting edge chassis and components manufacturer.

When the 39th Florida DIRTcar Nationals By University of Northwestern Ohio comes to life at the Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville Florida – February 10-13th – many of the almost 30 strong BRP-chassied racers will look to draw on previous success.

In last year’s 38th edition on the strength of his first 2 feature wins in the Sunshine State – Team Gypsum Driver Pat Ward won the Florida title with perennial down south competitor Jamie Mills earning a single win in the 4 race series.

Ward’s team-mate and 2008 Mr. DIRTcar Champ Billy Decker would surely like to keep the pre-season mini-series crown within the John Wight-owned race team. Ward – from Genoa NY earned his first DIRTcar Nationals Title in 2004. The Gypsum Team also will include 18 year old up and comer Larry Wight.

Billy Pauch – the lone New Jersey driver is also a two time Florida Champ. 13 years separated his two titles – the last coming in 2008.

One driver who will surely be looking to pick right where he left off in 2009 is Matt Sheppard who came within 4 points of 2009 Mr. DIRTcar Champion Brett Hearn and his first Big Block Championship.

Sheppard enjoyed quite a strong finish last season in winning the final three Super DIRTcar Series Tour events - including the Super DIRT Week Rite Aid 200 finale at Syracuse.

The Waterloo NY second generation driver who led DIRTcar Northeast with 20 Big-Block triumphs in ’09 - has yet to visit Victory Lane in 5 visits to Florida to date. Sheppard will be joined by team-mate Jeff Brownell Jr.

Several two car teams will see brothers Randy and Rodger Chrysler making the trip south – representing the DIRTcar Western Region as well as the father and son team of Rex King and Rex Junior – staples on the BRP Modified Tour.

The Len & Jo’s Restaurant-sponsored entries of Bill VanInwegen and Jeremy Markle are also hoping to serve up some top finishes.

The Canadian contingent will see the province of Quebec featuring another father and son team - Wallace and Dexter Stacey in addition to former Mr. DIRTcar 358 Mod Champ Mario Clair and Michel Chicoine while Eastern Ontario race fans will be cheering on Tim Kerr.

With 11 previous Florida wins to his credit, Danny Johnson will also be part of Team BRP this year – joining his brother Alan Johnson in the Sunshine State.

Central New York Team BRP fans can cheer for another three drivers – Dave Rauscher, Chris Higgins and Dale Planck while Easterners will no doubt be behind Bobby Varin and Keith Flach.

From the Keystone State – Darwin Greene, Ray Swinehart and Dan Vauter will be looking to put Pennsylvania on the Volusia Podium.

Volusia Speedway Park’s events are just the start of another assault on 2010 Victory Lanes at a dirt track near you throughout the spring, summer and fall.

In 2009, BRP-chassied drivers won more features than any other Chassis Manufacturer in Big Block, 358 and Sportsman competition. In fact since 2002 – Team BRP drivers have annually combined for at least 500 total wins each season.

Steve Kinser Wins Finale of DIRTcar Nationals

Barberville, FL- February 7, 2010-Heading into the 2010 season, 20-time World of Outlaws champion Steve Kinser said that he felt better than he had in two or three years, after having off-season surgery to fix a bulging disc in his neck. He started the season off very strong and was in contention for wins in each of the first three races of the 39th Annual Florida DIRTcar Nationals by University of Northwestern Ohio at Volusia Speedway. Kinser sealed the deal on Sunday night, picking up his first win of the season and his first victory since joining Tony Stewart Racing.

Kinser battled Tim Kaeding for most of the 30-lap contest and had Joey Saldana challenging him in the late going. For the Hall of Famer, it was his third career World of Outlaws A-Feature win at Volusia Speedway Park and his fifth overall triumph at the half-mile. Kinser now has 553 career A-Feature wins with the World of Outlaws.

"It feels good to get the first win of the year early on," Kinser said. "The car got better as the race went on and I had to let it come to me. I was able to run low and also up top. I'm just glad to be in Victory Lane. Thats what we want to do, win races with this car."

Kinser lined up second in the Bass Pro Shops Maxim and took the lead for the first time on the 12th lap from Tim Kaeding in traffic. Kaeding took the top spot back on the 16th lap using the high side of turn four. Just two laps later, Kinser was able to dive under Kaeding in turn one to take the lead and would pace the field for the rest of the way. On the second and final double file restart of the night, Kinser had Joey Saldana to contend with, who was using the extreme high side of the track to get a run on the leader. Kinser used strong restarts each time to hold down the top spot.

"The car was good on the restarts," shard the native of Bloomington, Ind. "We have been trying some different things here lately and I think we found a few that seem to work."

Kinser had a very strong week at the DIRTcar Nationals, finishing fourth or better in all four events he competed in, with three of those being podium runs. He leaves the Sunshine State second in points, just three markers behind his teammate Donny Schatz as he chases his record 21st series title.

"We had a pretty good week here and it was good to get back to the track and racing again," noted Kinser. "We still have some work to do and we'll go back to the shop and keep plugging away. This is a pretty good start to the year and we have plenty of racing left."

Joey Saldana powered his way from the eighth starting spot to a runner-up finish in the Budweiser Maxim. He tracked Kinser down late in the race and got along side of him a couple of times on the 23rd and 24th laps, but was not able to make a pass. Saldana was up to third just seven laps into the race, passing Donny Schatz, Craig Dollansky and Jason Sides along the way.

"We had a very good car tonight and it's a good run to finish second," Saldana said. "I am disappointed though, because I feel like we had a better car than he did I was able to track him down a couple of times and just about had him passed once and feel like we should have won this race. We'll keep working hard and go from here."

Saldana, who finished first or second in all four races at Volusia, earned the overall DIRTcar Nationals championship for his strong performance over the course of the week, which brought drivers from across the country to the half-mile. He is currently tied with Kinser for the second spot in points as he chases his first series championship.

"It does feel good to win the overall title with all of the strong cars that were here," stated the second generation driver. "We started eighth a couple of times and fifth and were able to pass very strong cars. We are doing the right things and if we keep at it, we'll get the wins."

Danny Lasoski passed more cars than any other driver on Sunday night. The 2001 series champion lined up 14th and wound up third in the Caseys General Stores JEI to earn the KSE Hard Charger Award. On the double file restart on the 15th lap, he powered his way from eighth to fifth as he marched toward the front of the field.

"I'm very happy for this entire team," Lasoski said. "We didn't quite start the week how we wanted and to finish on a strong note like this is great. Barry (Jackson), Pete (Stephens) and Cody (Jacobs) worked very hard all week and certainly deserved a strong finish like this."

Donny Schatz, the four-time and defending series champion, who won on Saturday night came home fourth in the Armor All J&J and left the Sunshine State as the series championship point leader as he chases his fifth consecutive title.

Tim Kaeding led 13 laps aboard the DTR Transport KPC and ended up fifth. Jason Meyers was sixth in the GLR Investments KPC, with Craig Dollansky seventh aboard the Big Game Treestands Maxim. Terry McCarl was eighth also in the Big Game Treestands Maxim. Jason Sides set fast time for the second consecutive night and wound up ninth piloting the Wetherington Tractor Service Maxim. Paul McMahan rounded out the Top-10 in the Indy Race Parts Eagle.

The World of Outlaws return to action on Friday, February 26 Las Vegas Motor Speedway's Dirt Track for the second annual Las Vegas Super Sprint Classic.
