CASCAR MOPAR 500 Weekend: Twin 100s and Starting Grid

By Robert K. Rooney

DOWLER & MICKS WIN CENTENNIAL 100s

CALGARY, AB - The first two 100 lap races of the MOPAR PARTS 500 Weekend at Race City, the Centennial 100s, ended up with a pair of veterans taking the winners’ trophies in front of 3,615 fans.

In the Alberta Centennial 100, Ontario drivers Dave Whitlock (#39) who will start on pole in tomorrow¹s 300-lapper) and Peter Gibbons (#1) battled for the entire race with Kevin Dowler of Sherwood Park (#35) making frequent challenges from third.

When Gibbons slipped coming off turn two on the last lap, Whitlock stuffed his Dodge¹s nose into the resulting gap at the bottom of the track. The two rubbed fenders all the way into turn three. When they slid high, Dowler leaped his EMCO #35 under them both and crossed the finish line a few feet ahead of Whitlock. Ron Beauchamp of Windsor, Ontario managed to nip around Gibbons for third.

In the Saskatchewan Centennial 100, Kerry Micks of Mount Albert, Ontario out-dragged Don Thompson of Hamilton, Ontario at the green flag and held off every challenge to take the win. Thompson was second and D. J. Kennington of St. Thomas was third.

Spectator gates open today at 1 p.m. for the MOPAR FanFest. The autograph session will be from 5pm to 6pm and driver introductions begin at 6:30. The MOPAR PARTS 300, Canada¹s biggest stock car race, begins at 7pm.

ALSTAR: Steve Tiemersma two-for-two in Shouldice ALSTAR outings at Delaware Speedway

LONDON, ON – Steve Tiemersma is hoping that it won’t be another three years before the Shouldice Designer Stone ALSTAR Late Model Series returns to Delaware Speedway. The Newmarket, ON won the last time the series visited the half-mile, London, ON-area oval in 2002, and he won again on Friday night, putting an end to a personal winless streak that dated back to his previous Delaware victory.

The driver of the #67 Aurora Automotive / Pennzoil 10 Minute Oil Change Pontiac started sixth in the field of 20 who took part in the eighth ALSTAR feature race of the season. But by lap 12, he was up to second place. Four laps later, he was underneath early leader Jim Molenhuis and into the lead.
Following a yellow flag near lap 20 of the 75-lap chase, the event went green for more than 50 laps, during which time eventual runner-up Kyle Donaldson was able to close to within inches of Tiemersma on several occasions. But as the race wore on, the former ALSTAR champ put some distance between himself and the rookie Donaldson.
A caution with two laps to go bunched the field for a final sprint, but it wouldn’t change the outcome of the race. Tiemersma earned his second Shouldice ALSTAR feature win at Delaware Speedway and the fifth victory of his ALSTAR career. Meanwhile Donaldson’s Custom Engines Ford came home a respectable second after an impressive outing by the young star.
“We’ve been here twice and we won both times. This place is great,” said Tiemersma, who said his car was actually stronger in the heat races before some changes to the car actually slowed it down. “I think we have some more speed in her.”
The third and final podium spot went to Kirk Hooker from nearby Chatham, ON. The Country View Golf Course Chevy driver charged from 14th at the start to earn a top result at Delaware in front of many of his fans. Dan Delisle of LaSalle, ON was fourth.
Claiming the final top-five spot at the end was reigning ALSTAR champ and current points leader Robbie Thompson in his SMP / Logel’s Dodge. The Southampton, ON resident came from 18th at the initial green flag and when all was said and done, he boosted his points lead over Derrick Tiemersma by a single point in the championship chase. Tiemersma’s Wayfreight Pontiac was sixth at Delaware.
A pair of 15-lap heat races took place prior to Friday night’s 75-lap main event. Robbie Thompson won the first to bring his series-leading heat-race checkered flag total to seven for the season, while another former series champ, Jason Shaw, won the other sprint to collect his fifth heat win of ’05.
The next Shouldice ALSTAR Late Model Series race takes place on Saturday, July 30 at Sauble Speedway, just west of Owen Sound, Ontario. In terms of the overall title race, Thompson leads Derrick Tiemersma by 16 points as the racers prepare to start the final third of the 2005 Shouldice ALSTAR schedule.

CASCAR MOPAR 500 WEEKEND: Pit Stop Competition

The team crewing D. J. Kennington's Castrol-sponsored Dodge won the Pit Stop
Competition at Eau Claire Market in downtown Calgary today. When the
winning team's prizes were presented, however, courtesy of sponsors Super 8
and Snap-On Tools, Kennington's shirt was different from everyone else's in
the winning group.

The reason for the sartorial mismatch was that the regular pit crew for
Kennington's St. Thomas, Ontario-based Dodge was still in transit. The
jackman, tire carriers and tire changers who completed the stop in a
blisteringly-quick 10.22 seconds were actually borrowed from the #02 Power
Water team of Kennington's friendly rival Kerry Micks from Mount Albert,
Ontario.

Second-fastest among the teams participating was the #60 MOPAR Dodge outfit
of Ron Beauchamp from Windsor, Ontario which did their stop in 10.83
seconds. Mark Dilley's #9 Dodge crew was third.

TOMORROW the CASCAR teams get down to business with qualifying at 6pm and
the Twin Centennial 100s beginning at 7pm. Both the Alberta Centennial 100
and the Saskatchewan Centennial 100 are full-points races.

Spectator gates open at 5pm.

SATURDAY night, it¹s the MOPAR PARTS 300. Pitting the top CASCAR National
Super Series teams from Eastern Canada against the best of the Western
Series, the 300 will fall to the driver and crew who best combine speed,
strategy and racing luck.

SPECTATOR GATES open at 1pm for FanFest with an autograph session with all
the drivers late in the afternoon. The MOPAR Parts 300 goes green at 7pm

Micks PowerWater Ford ready for CASCAR Western swing

"We were fortunate last year and made two visits to the podium"
By Bruce F. Mehlenbacher

July 18, 2005, Mt. Albert, ON - With his PowerWater 2005 Micks Motorsports Ford, Kerry Micks is heading west for this weekend's MOPAR 500 at Race City Motorsport Park. The veteran driver is looking forward to another strong finish at Calgary's high banked, half-mile oval along with his first visit to Sun Valley Motor Speedway in Vernon, BC.

"We were fortunate last year at Calgary and the PowerWater Motorsports Ford made two visits to the podium, said Micks. "We always run strong at Race City and this year should be no exception. It's a long ride, over 5,000 miles to the west and back, but it's usually a good trip. Last year we were able to win a 100-lap qualifier at Calgary and placed a very respectable third in the main event."

Micks, last weekend's Molson Indy winner currently sits third in the 2005 CASCAR Super Series Points Championship, and the PowerWater Micks Motorsports Ford has won two events this season.

"Last season's race at Calgary's Race City Motorsport Park was really hard on tires," Micks continued. "We had to pit four times and were very lucky not to get a flat under green flag which plagued a lot of teams. The team gave me great pit stops and made the right decisions with the handling problems to keep us on the lead lap and in contention for the win. Our last pit was with 100 laps to go and most teams pitted with 70 laps to go. I ran out of tires at the end and (Dave) Whitlock and (Mark) Dilley had more left than I did. With 20 laps to go, Pete Shepherd was running second behind me and I thought the two of us could draft to the end and stay out front. Unfortunately, Pete got a flat and Dave and Mark passed us both. I could keep my car on the bottom, but at that point they had the tires and horsepower to pass on the outside."

Three-time CASCAR Super Series National champion Dave Whitlock won his fourth career MOPAR Parts 300 at Calgary's Race City Motorsport followed closely by Mark Dilley in second.

The CASCAR Super Series, MOPAR 500 Weekend at Race City Motorsport Park, Canada's finest high banked, half-mile oval, will take place July 22-23 in Calgary, Alberta.

Fletcher Engineers Late Race Pass to Capture OSCAAR Race at Peterborough Speedway

Milton, ON - The JNE Consulting #61 headed into the fast 1/3 high banked mile oval Saturday July 16 with the goal to rebound from a series of unfortunate results at this track. John began the night winning a qualifying race win and a third place finish in the other.

As it is custom in the OSCAAR Outlaw Super Late Model series the top 10 Qualifiers draw for position inside the first 10 starting spots. The Milton resident drew 10th, with Johns rivals all around starting all around him the team knew that a good start of the Main 50 lap event would be in order. At the drop of the green flag, there was a quick caution to restart the field with the JNE Consulting car already moved to eighth.

After the restart, John pounced on the field of cars carving his way up to second place just after 14 laps. John once again found himself hounding eventual second place finisher and very competitive Shane Maginnis for the 24 laps. Once John found a hole and powered by the #03 car of Shane the #61 car opened up an astounding 4-second lead in four laps and cruised to the victory and recaptured the overall OSCAAR points lead back for the nights third place finish Rob Clarke.

"This is one of the hardest races I have won so far in OSCAAR, the other teams are getting so good week in and week out" John had to say in is post race interview on the front stretch of Peterborough Speedway.

The Teams next event is Saturday July 23 and the last race for OSCAAR at Sauble Speedway for 2005 where the JNE Consulting Team are coming off a third place finish.

OSCAAR OUTLAWS SET FOR ROUND FOUR

By Don McLeod

The OSCAAR Outlaws will make the first of three stops at Peterborough Speedway on July 16. Local weather continues to call for hot and sunny conditions and it is fair to predict that the on-track action will also be hot and furious. A tight battle for the championship continues between Rob Clarke and John Fletcher at the top of the standings. But they can't rest on their laurels because at the last race Jeff Hanley served notice that he is back!

Recent on track performance also suggests that a number of other Outlaws will contend for the win at Peterborough: Shane Maginnis, Al Shepstone, Michel Beyore, Gary Passer and John Owen to name a few will be among those contending at the top.

TJ Woolsey is set to return to action to this weekend, in his newly purchased ride of former OSCAAR Champion Stu Robinson Jr. Will he bring the former #68 Outlaw car up through the field and also contend for the win - come to Peterborough and find out!

Racing at Peterborough Speedway this Saturday will also serve as an excellent "test session" for the teams to key in on their setups for The 7th Annual Don Biederman Memorial 75 Lap Event. With less than two months to go, the anticipation is building towards OSCAAR's major race event of the year. Racing fans will want to book that weekend on their calendar now; the race will take place on Saturday September 3rd.

The green flag drops at 7:00, with the pit gates opening at 2:00 and the spectator gates opening at 5:00. Outlaw fans should arrive early and stop by OSCAAR’s souvenir canopy to take a peek at the new 2005 hats and t-shirts, and don’t forget about OSCAAR’s new line created especially for the female outlaw fan!

Tyler Brown finds a cause to race for!

Tyler Brown to use 4B Racing Dodge Intrepid to raise funds for CanWest Raise a Reader.

WATERDOWN, ONTARIO - Brown had to patiently wait for his 14th birthday, so he could finally compete in the Ontario Pro Challenge series. Finally that day has come; the 4B Racing/Assante Dodge Intrepid hits the track this Saturday at Peterborough Speedway, Ontario's fastest 1/3 mile track. While Brown is set to make history on the track as the youngest driver ever to compete in this high speed series, a mere 5 days after his birthday he also wants to get the most out of his new racer both on and off the track.

"Tyler has always wanted to use his racing to help raise funds for charity," says 4B Racing team owner Darrell Brown. "This year was a perfect time, as he is stepping up to cars. This morning on CH Morning Live in Hamilton Tyler announced an initiative to raise money for CanWest Raise a Reader charities."

"This Charity in near and dear to my heart" Tyler says. "First Raise a Reader is the corporate charity for Assante Wealth Management one of my sponsors, second when I was younger I had trouble reading and comprehending what was being read. I was lucky enough to work hard and with extra help manage to overcome the problem, now its time for me to step up and help others". Once the charity was chosen Tyler needed a way to raise funds, that is where Ken Whiting of Outdoor Travel in Hamilton came in. "I first met Tyler and his family when he was 8 years old racing go karts and when I heard that at age 14 Tyler had it in his mind to help others, donating the prize was the least I could do. Outdoor Travel has donated a one week motorhome vacation valued at $1,700.

Tyler will be making appearances throughout southwestern Ontario as well as at the tracks where we race from mid July until September 10th promoting the charity and he wants everyone to enter the draw for the motorhome vacation package. There is no cost to enter the draw, but hopes are that people will dig into their pocket and donate to the charity or donate a gently used book. The draw for the motorhome and the presentation of the cheque to CanWest Raise a Reader will be done on Saturday Sept 10th at Flamboro Speedway.

To find out more about the CanWest Raise a Reader and Tyler's appearance schedule go to www.4bracing.com.

Tyler Brown Fast Fact:
Tyler Brown is a 14-year-old racer from Waterdown, Ontario. In seven years of karting he has started more than 225 races and has won, "One championship", "Most Improved Driver award", and a "Team of the Year" award. At the local level he has never finished lower than 5th in series points and at the regional or national level he has never finished lower than 10th.

Brown drives for 4B Racing (www.4bracing.com) and he is supported by Assante Wealth Management, VH Web Dezine, Leaf Racewear, The Adin Group Inc (www.adin.ca), and Big Brother Big Sisters.

The JNE Consulting #61 Team Looks to rebound at Peterborough Speedway.

Courtesy Scott Fletcher

Milton On: John Fletcher would probably like to have at least one of the results back from Ontario's fastest 1/3 mile Peterborough Speedway back from 2004. The JNE Consulting team competed in 3 events in 2004 with there best result being forth and this was after starting ninth behind Johns rivals, rocketing to the front, taking the lead for three laps before being spun by a lapped car and having to go to the back with less then 20 laps to go.

The second event at the speedway resulted in a early race crash that ended the teams day in 20th place and the last event of the year was well documented while leading with 8 laps to go in the 50 lap race and the championship, only to lose the OSCAR title by a mere 10 points. The Team lost a total of 105 points to the 2004 Champion alone at this speedway alone.

"To say Peterborough owes us one would be wrong, we race to win every race, and we had the best car at every Peterborough event last year".

The JNE Consulting #61 Team head to Peterborough Speedway July 16, 15 points behind last years champion and 136 ahead of third place. The races this year have been exciting and so far unpredictable.

CASCAR: The CASCAR Super Series heads west for a pair of oval events starting with the MOPAR 500 Weekend at Calgary’s Race City Motorsport Park

CALGARY, AB – The drivers, teams and officials that make up the CASCAR Super Series are on their way to Calgary, Alberta for this weekend’s MOPAR 500 Weekend at Race City Motorsport Park. The event is one of the longest-running and most popular stock car races on Canada’s top racing circuit.

The annual extravaganza at the high-banked, half-mile oval features a ‘Speedweeks-like’ format in the lead-up to the main event. On Friday evening (July 22), time trials will set the front row for the MOPAR 300. Immediately afterwards, a pair of 100-lap MOPAR 100 qualifying sprint races will establish the rest of the starting field for Saturday night’s (July 23) 300-lap main event.

Dave Whitlock of Wyoming, ON won the last two MOPAR 300s, leaving him with a series-leading four wins in this illustrious event. The Avenue Motor Works / NMT Dodge Charger driver’s memories of last year’s race in Calgary are especially sweet, given that he came out on top of a lengthy side-by-side, late-race battle with his teammate Mark Dilley, en route to a ‘one-two’ finish for the longtime Whitlock Motorsports duo.

Another racer who has enjoyed a lot of success at Race City is two-time National champion Peter Gibbons, who has three career MOPAR 300 victories on his impressive resume, the last of which came in 2000. Additionally, the Canadian Tire Chevy driver has collected numerous checkered flags in the 100-lap qualifying sprint races over the years. These 50-mile chases are full Super Series points events, and can be counted on to produce thrilling action as the drivers fight to improve their standing in the championship chase, as well as their starting positions for the MOPAR 300.

The race marks the end of the first half of the Super Series schedule. Home Hardware Chevy driver Don Thomson Jr. leads the points chase entering the MOPAR 500 Weekend as he battles for his fifth-consecutive CASCAR National Championship. The Hamilton, ON racer has never won the MOPAR 300. Dodge Charger driver Mark Dilley is second in the points, 49 markers back of Thomson after five events. Micks has a pair of wins to his credit in 2005, including last weekend’s race at the Toronto Indy.

CASCAR NOTEBOOK: On Thursday afternoon, Calgary’s Eau Clair Market will once again host the Super 8 CASCAR Pit Stop Competition. The teams will gather at the Saddledome for 11 a.m., prior to heading downtown to the Eau Claire Market. For years, the Pit Stop Competition has signaled the start of Calgary’s annual visit by Canada’s elite stock car tour… Peter Gibbons and Kerry Micks won last year’s MOPAR 100 qualifying sprint races at Race City… Don Thomson Jr. won the pole for last year’s MOPAR 300 with a single-lap time of 17.510 seconds around Race City Speedway… Following the MOPAR 500 Weekend, the CASCAR Super Series teams will continue their tour through Western Canada when they head to Vernon, BC and Sun Valley Motor Speedway (July 29-30)… Like the Calgary Super Series race, the Sun Valley event will double as a CASCAR Western Series regular points race…

Montreal in NASCAR drivers seat for 2007?

Montreal in NASCAR drivers seat for 2007?

The window for staging Canada's first ever NASCAR race is quickly closing, according to series officials. It's now looking more and more like the premier stock car series will make its way north of the border in 2007.
"We're open-minded; we've been approached by a number of groups (in Canada). But certainly Montreal has a lot to offer," NASCAR CEO George Pyne tells the Winston Salem Journal.
"Normand Legault (Chairman and CEO of Grand Prix F1 of Canada) has expressed a real interest in a race in Montreal. That's a great facility. That's something we'll take a good hard look at, but I think that's more of an '07 option than '06."
"We're pretty far along with the schedules for 2006. And we'd have to move some things around on the schedule for '06 (to fit in a Montreal race)."
However, fans expecting a Nextel Cup race to debut in Canada will be disappointed.

"It wouldn't be for the Nextel Cup series," says Pyne, indicating that a Busch Grand National event was a more likely scenario. However, every effort would be made to schedule a race on an open Cup weekend so that many of the Nextel drivers would be able to attend.
NASCAR recently staged its first ever Busch Series race in Mexico City and Pyne believes they can replicate that success in Canada.
"Canada is a great market, and we've got a strategic alliance with CASCAR (Canadian Association for Stock Car Racing) and a partnership with TSN (Canada's leading sports television network), and we need to have an event up there if that's a market we want to grow in," he tells the newspaper.
"I think we're making a lot of progress. There is a lot of interest among some of the major Canadian corporations to support a NASCAR endeavor. It will take a lot of corporate support for CASCAR, TSN and the race itself. And we're working on that and cautiously confident good things will happen."
Pyne says weather will play a crucial factor in when NASCAR schedules a race in Canada with June, July and August the most likely dates for a race.
Formula One currently stages a race in Montreal in June while the Champ Car series races on the Gilles Villeneuve Cir

SPRINT CARS: Two For Lou!!!

Before an overflowing grandstand of race fans, Winnipeg's Lou Kennedy Jr captured the inaugural NAPA Auto Parts Mid-Canada Sprint Car Challenge at Victory lane Speedway, MB. Included in Kennedy's winnings was the $500 bonus money paid for a 360 Sprint to win the NOSA-sanctioned race which made his grand total payday $1500 dollars U.S.

This marks the second consecutive year that Lou has cashed in on the "Prairie Dirt Challenge" as he won the first Challenge race hosted by Estevan Motor Speedway on August 14, 2004.

The 360 sprints swept the event's top three spots and with that, collecting the additional bonus money of $250 paid to any 360 finishing in the top three postions in the feature. The other recipients of the bonus money were the second place car of Wade Nygaard of Fargo, ND and the third place car driven by Dave Sobczak of Winnipeg. The highest finishing 410 sprint was that of Mark Dobmeier of Grand Forks, ND who finished in fourth place.

During the race program an announcement was made that NAPA Auto Parts will once again join with Victory Lane Speeday to host the second annual NAPA Auto Parts Mid-Canada Sprint car Challenge again in July of 2006.

O’YOUNG CELEBRATES DOUBLE WIN

Vancouver B.C., July 18, 2005: Twenty-five year old Vancouver-born racer Darryl O’Young gave his Hong Kong based Team Jebsen much to cheer about at this past weekend’s double-header round of the Porsche Infineon Carrera Cup Asia in Beijing. Fresh from his previous week’s experience in Monza, Italy where he competed in a round of the European Le Mans Championship (also in a Porsche), O’Young dominated both races 6 and 7 of the prestigious Asian racing series. He didn’t put a foot wrong in either race, despite coming under pressure from a number of hard-charging and extremely formidable competitors including, among others, the likes of reigning British GT Champion, Jonathan Cocker and Formula 3 star Danny Watts.

Both races were tremendously exciting with Briton Danny Watts finishing third in Round 7 after what he described as “one of the most enjoyable” races of his career. During that race, Watts managed to stay ahead of reigning series Champion, A-Ha Racing’s Matthew Marsh and 2005 series leader Charoensukhawatana Nattavude although he was unable to overhaul GruppeM Racing’s Jonathan Cocker.

Said O’Young after his second win of the weekend: “When you get on the grid, you just never know what is going to happen, but I think I did a good job… I just needed to be consistent at the front. I did have a couple of ‘moments’, but managed to get away with it.”

After racing Karts and Formula cars in North America since he was eight years old, adapting to racing in Asia has been an interesting challenge for O’Young, but from all indications, (especially after back-to-back wins in Beijing), he seems to be very much up to the task.

With four rounds to go, Nattavude leads the 2005 Porsche Infineon Carrera Cup Asia on 120 points with O’Young taking second position on the leaderboard, 14 points behind. Following his performance this past weekend however, Darryl O’Young has most definitely shown everyone that the title is still very much up for grabs. Said O’Young of his title aspirations: “Winning the Championship was always our aim since the start of the season. We had a couple of setbacks earlier on, so it’s great to have two wins here. I’m looking forward to the next two rounds in Korea.

Rounds 8 and 9 of the Porsche Infineon Carrera Cup Asia will be held at South Korea’s Taebaek Circuit on August 6 and 7 followed by appearances at the Formula One race in Shanghai Oct. 15/16 and at the Macau Grand Prix Nov. 19/20.

MERRITTVILLE’S BIGGEST WEEKEND HAS NEW LOOK: KICKS OFF WITH TRUCKER APPRECIATION NIGHT

By Jim Irvine 905-892-8266 (Office)

THOROLD, ONTARIO … Merrittville Speedway is preparing for its biggest annual weekend of the season with racing action both Saturday July 30th and Monday August 1st.

Modern Landfill Night July 30th will once again feature the 5 divisions of the Weekly Racing Series – the L. St. Amand Enterprises 358 Modifieds, Original Pizza Logs Sportsmen, Dwarf Cars/ Mod Lites, Hoosier Stocks and Turn 4 Collision 4 Cylinders.

When race fans enter the grandstand area on the final night of July, they will surely marvel at some of the trucks on display as part of the Trucker Appreciation Night Show & Shine. The first Show and Shine was a highlight of last season and it was a tough choice for best appearing truck. All of the entries did laps on the Speedway with the fans voting for their favorite in a contest conducted by Merrittville’s announcing team of Erik Tomas and Clint Geoffrey with the fan’s pick the 1982 Peterbilt of former Sportsmen competitor Bill Baker of WA Baker Trucking.

“We had quite a turn-out last season eventhough the event was rain delayed,” informs (GM) Erica Bicknell, “ the individual owner/operators and the corporate trucks on display were quite impressive … they take a lot of pride in their vehicles.”

Drivers with a commercial license are reminded that with proof of license, all truckers will receive a $3.oo discount July 30th on their grandstand admission.

For further information on Trucker Appreciation Night call the Speedway Office at 905-892-8266 or visit http://www.merrittvillespeedway.com/.

Modern Landfill Inc has been serving the Niagara Region and Hamilton-Wentworth for over 30 years in addition to Western New York. Working in harmony with the environment they can service residential, commercial and industrial requirements with front lift, lugger and roll off containers from 2 to 40 yds. Modern also specializes in recycling and maintains portable washrooms for rent.

To reach Modern call 905-262-6000 or toll frees 1-800-561-4409.

Pete Cosco Haulage of St. Catharines once again will present Merrittville Speedway’s most prestigious 358 Modified event - Monday August 1st – in the 13th Annual Trevor Wilkens Memorial Modified Classic.

Traditionally it is one of the highest paying stops along the Advance Auto Parts 358 Modified Super DIRT Series with lap and bonus money available to the starting field.

When that field takes the green flag it will have a new look – the event will only be 50 laps in length with caution laps not counting.

Since 1972, Merrittville Speedway has held a Syracuse Qualifier and each year the event continues to draw race teams from across DIRT Motorsports to the challenge the Thorold track’s stars.

“Race fans are in for an awesome show,” boasts Bicknell adding, “all the laps will be green flag laps – and with the shorter distance … the drivers won’t have the luxury of waiting to make their moves later in the race.”

Merrittville Speedway has held 50 lap Super DIRT Series events previously. In 2001, Azurix North America presented the Triple 50’s event in celebration of the Speedway’s 50th Anniversary and each segment was quite a race in itself.

The Monday August 1st Civic Holiday event also will see the Hoosier Stocks, Dwarf Cars/Mod Lites and the Turn 4 Collision 4 Cylinders in action with the Hoosier Stocks set for 30 laps. Both the grandstand and pit gates open at 4:00 PM with the 358 Modified Time Trials set to start at 6:30.

Merrittville Speedway and Cosco Haulage will be welcoming Club Castropignano for their second taste of dirt racing. The home of Merrittville Speedway’s Awards Banquets will be assisting in presenting an Italian Night prior to race time complete with an Italian Dinner from 4:00 to 6:15.

Tickets for the Italian pre-race dinner will be available from the Speedway Office during the week or on a race night starting June 25th for $10 plus the cost of an admission ticket.

Merrittville Speedway has lap sponsorships available for $30 for the L. St. Amand Enterprises 358 Modifieds and $10 for the Hoosier Stocks. At the $30 level, a Pasta Dinner Ticket is included. Other opportunities available include heat sponsors, halfway leader, first Merrittville Regular or any idea that you may have.

Race Fans have purchased laps over the years to cheer on their favorites and the business community has used it as an economical means of reaching race fans at the best family entertainment in Niagara.

For further information about the event of the summer - race fans should call the Speedway Office at 905-892-8266 or visit www.merrittvillespeedway.com.

Roller Coaster Ride for VMS At Vernon/Penticton Double Header

Theresa Carey, Van Domselaar Motorsports

July 2nd, 2005 -- Vernon, BC: The #14 team of Van Domselaar Motorsports was put through its paces this Canada Day long weekend. On Saturday, July 3rd the CASCAR Western Series teams raced at Sun Valley Speedway in Vernon, BC, and then convoyed down to the southern Okanagan valley to compete at Penticton Speedway the next day.

The weekend was chock-full of ups and downs for the VMS team. Two downpours wreaked havoc with the race schedule on Saturday, with additional problems arising from some defective tires which required 11th hour replacement. Despite the chaos, the VMS team still qualified 5th overall, in a field of 16 competitors. Cars were impounded after the qualifying session, and the team had to hold on to the hope that the earlier tire problems were now behind them.

Skies remained clear for the 200 lap feature event. The race started cleanly and James Jr. stuck with the lead pack despite fighting an understeer problem. By Lap 63 Jr. had been passed by several competitors and took advantage of a yellow flag to come in and make a wedge adjustment. The car’s handling improved somewhat and by the halfway point the SouthFort Monte Carlo was in 7th position.

At Lap 131 the #14 was progressing through the field when the #6 car locked up his brakes and unavoidably slid into Jr., sending the VMS car into a spin. The caution came out again, and Jr. headed into the pits for a much-needed right rear tire change. The VMS entry came off pit road still in 7th place, but a lap down.

On Lap 181 the #87 car spun coming out of Turn 2 and the caution came out again. The team made the decision to return to pit road for a right front tire change and another wedge adjustment. When the track returned to green flag conditions on Lap 146, Jr. radioed in that the car’s handling was now bang on, and he set his sights on getting his lap back.

With about 40 laps remaining, the #14 entry started having power-loss problems again, similar to those at the Vernon season opener. (At that time the culprit was found to be a damaged fuel pump, but that had since been replaced.) With the return of the nagging power problem Jr. was forced to struggle once again to keep the #14 machine out of harm’s way. Laps continued to count down, with the VMS entry losing positions until eventually crossing the line in 7th, one lap down.

After the race the team was disheartened, but had no choice but to regroup and start working on preparations and repairs for the Penticton race to be held the next day. While doing so the team discovered the source of the nagging fuel problem: In the words of Crew Chief James Sr.: “I think we've got the engine problem figured out now. It won't run without fuel! We found the pickup in the tank was not in the ideal location to get the last drop out of the tank causing us to run out before the end of the race. We've moved [the pickup] now and this won't be a problem again.”

July 3rd, 2005 --Penticton, BC: Mother Nature cooperated for the second day of the double-header event, with clear skies and not-too-hot temperatures. There were still some scheduling glitches to overcome, but the team was fast in practice and was looking forward to a quick qualifying run.

Additional glitches with the timing and scoring equipment meant teams had to re-do their qualifying laps, but this proved to be a blessing in disguise for the VMS team as they took their first pole position of the year! The team eagerly awaited the start of the Penticton 200, knowing that with a little good racing luck a podium finish was within reach.

James Jr. took the green flag at the front of the pack, but by Lap 2 the track was already under yellow due to a spin by the # 26 car. When the field restarted again on Lap 8 Jr. could not hold off the #35 car and relinquished the lead. Tires on the #14 machine took a while to come in, and in the meantime Jr. was passed by the # 30 and # 79 cars on Lap 19, and later by the #12 and #68 cars.

Jr. found himself in 5th spot by Lap 44 when the caution came out for a crash involving the #79 car. Jr. brought the #14 Chevy Monte Carlo in for a quick wedge adjustment, which helped improve the car’s handling. Back under green, Jr. was now able to pass and regain some of his lost track position.

The roller coaster ride took another downward turn on Lap 113, when the #14 car was spun out going into Turn 2 by the #36 car. Jr. managed to get the SouthFort ride pointing back in the right direction and underway, so no caution was called. The VMS entry’s left rear tire was flattened however, and the team was forced to change tires under green flag conditions.

The team lost two laps as a result of the spin-out, but the new left-side tire was just what the #14 machine needed. James Jr. was now able to drive the car anywhere on the track, and he made short work of the field, passing everyone by Lap 152. Jr. was working on getting his other lap back when another caution came out on Lap 181. By the time the field took the green again on Lap 195 there were not enough laps left to work through all the traffic once again. And so, Jr. crossed the finish line in 4th place, the first car one lap down.

This weekend’s double header marks the halfway point for the CASCAR Western Series 2005 season. The team now sits solidly in 4th place in the championship standings, by unofficial points standings only 4 points out of 3rd spot. Despite some disappointments, the team’s current standing marks their best ever mid-season achievement to date. And the team has every intention of taking it uphill from here.

ALSTAR: Thompson wins at Sunset

STROUD, ON – It took longer than planned, but Robbie Thompson once again demonstrated his dominance of Sunset Speedway when the Shouldice ALSTAR Late Model Series’ seventh feature race of the 2005 season took place on Sunday, July 17 at the Barrie-area stock car oval.

The race, originally slated to take place on Saturday night, was pushed back to late in the afternoon on Sunday by recurring rain in the region. But in the end, neither the weatherman nor a deep starting position could keep the Shear Metal Products / Logel’s Dodge driver from making his third consecutive trip to Sunset’s victory lane.
The Southampton, ON resident started 19th in the 24-car field and quickly moved to the front thanks to a few early caution flags. By lap 15, the reigning Shouldice ALSTAR points champion was already up to fifth and showed no sign of slowing during his march to the front.
Thompson completed his charge at the midway point of the race and held the top spot to the checkered flag to bolster his championship points lead following seven events. Jason Shaw, who won Race #6 at Kawartha Speedway on July 8, finished second to Thompson.
Shaw, who resides in Guelph, ON, started eighth at Sunset but was involved in an early incident that sent him to the back of the pack. The Spira Ford driver recovered from the setback, however, and demonstrated he’s capable of putting together solid results after a string of early season disappointments that plagued him following his season-opening win at Sauble Speedway. Shaw was running third on the final lap, but executed a dramatic fourth-turn pass on eventual third-place finisher Derrick Tiemersma, which included a scrape with the outside wall.

The next Shouldice ALSTAR Late Model Series race takes place on Friday, July 22 at Delaware Speedway, just outside of London, Ontario.

SHOULDICE ALSTAR POINT STANDINGS: Following Race #7 at Sunset Speedway: 1. #9 Robbie Thompson (655 pts.); 2. #7 Derrick Tiemersma (641); 3. #76 Tyler Williams (630); 4. #38 Kirk Hooker (622); 5. #22 Glenn Watson (615); 6. #72 Rob MacDonnell (615); 7. #53 Kyle Donaldson (611); 8. #98 Michael Almand (610); 9. #82 Jason Shaw (609); 10. #4 Craig Zurbrigg (604); 11. #57 Brett Murray (598); 12. #67 Steve Tiemersma (597); 13. #11 Chris Morrow (590); 14. #75 Jeff Cassidy (572); 15. #30 Jim Molenhuis (565); 16. #69 Alan Inglis (554); 17. #42 Richard Holmes (552); 18. #3 Ken Naves (549); 19. #8 Paul Gresel (537); 20. #93 Tim Cole (413); 21. #23 Steven Thompson (386); 22. #1 Dan Delisle (351); 23. #81 Bryan Mercer (257); 24. #28 Roy Wilkie (79); 25. #55 Thane Woodside (74)

Courtesy Erik Tomas, Raceline Radio

Burlington Ontario: Raceline Radio, Canada’s only nationally syndicated motorsport magazine and open-line radio show is delighted to announce a new partnership with “Home Town Radio” AM 900 CHML, where Hamilton’s News/Talk leader becomes the new flagship station for The Raceline Radio Network.

Raceline Radio will now originate from CHML’s Main Street West studios in downtown Hamilton Sunday nights at 8:06 PM Eastern. “ CHML has been an information giant for generations in the golden horseshoe/Lake Ontario market, and we couldn’t be prouder to be working hand in hand with one of the finest News/Talk stations in the country, that also just happens to be a key Canadian motorsport hotbed!”, commented Raceline Radio Network Executive Producer and show analyst John Massingberd.

“Big signal, low on the dial, and CHML’s just around the corner from our corporate offices in Burlington!” stated Raceline Radio writer/producer/anchor Erik Tomas.”

I’ve known Assistant Program Director Bob Sherwin and several CHML staffers for years, and they’re absolutely top-drawer. Program Director Jeff Storey and his staff have gone far beyond the normal call of duty to get us moved in. I’ve always admired CHML for their commitment to serving their community with news and information. It’s fantastic to be aboard! ”, Tomas continued. “CHML’s been a Raceline Radio Network affiliate for a few years, so it was an easy decision to say yes when they approached us to be the new flagship station.” stated AM 900 CHML Program Director Jeff Storey. “Motorsport is such a big part of the sports framework in our market, and this new association with The Raceline Radio Network helps increase brand awareness for AM 900 CHML.”, Storey added.

A consistent winner of major international broadcast journalism awards, The Raceline Radio Network is carried on 15 affiliates in Hamilton, Montreal, Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg, Fredericton, Windsor, Kitchener-Waterloo, London, Niagara Falls, Peterborough, Truro, Oromocto and New Maryland. Raceline Radio’s broadcast partners include: Subaru Canada, Texaco-Havoline, Krown Rust Inhibitor, Globalstar Satellite Telephones and Inside Track Motorsport News.

Dilley scores a fourth-place finish on the streets of T.O.

Heads out west in second place in the CASCAR Super Series points

Courtesy Don Brooks, Whitlock Motorsports

TORONTO, ON – On Sunday afternoon at the Molson Indy Toronto, CASCAR Super Series veteran Mark Dilley earned an impressive fourth-place finish in the series’ annual appearance on the streets of Toronto.

The Barrie, ON racer started 12th in the 32-car field and meticulously worked his way forward, through traffic, all the while being careful to protect his PowerWater / Dodge / Mobil 1 /Exide Dodge Charger for a late-race charge. At the conclusion of the 36-lap CASCAR feature race around the 11-turn temporary street circuit on the grounds of Toronto’s Exhibition Place, Dilley was all over third-place finisher Don Thomson Jr., and narrowly missed making an appearance on the podium.

“The guys worked really hard on the car on Saturday and Sunday morning and really got it a lot better than it was,” said Dilley, after the race, which took place in front of a Sunday crowd of over 70,000 fans. “Our plan was to save the car to put on a late charge at the end. I almost got Donnie [Third-place finisher Don Thomson Jr.] at the end; I was up almost to his door by the finish line on the last lap. Another lap and we would have gotten him.”

Dilley continued, “That’s my best Toronto Indy finish and it equals my top road course result; we got a fourth at Mosport once before. It was a great showing for PowerWater with Kerry Micks winning and me coming fourth; that’s for sure.”

The Toronto weekend was also special for Mark and the entire Whitlock Motorsports team because it marked the return of his long-time sponsor NTN Bearings to Dilley’s car. “They’re back on board with our program for the rest of the year and we couldn’t be happier. The people at NTN are like family to me and our team because we had such a long association together. It was so great to have them back on the car in Toronto and for the rest of the season. I’d like to join the Dodge and DaimlerChrysler people in welcoming NTN back to our program.”

LOOKING AHEAD:
On the strength of his performance in Toronto, Dilley cemented his hold on second-place in the overall point standings as the series heads to Alberta and B.C. for its annual two-race swing through Western Canada.

“We’re feeling really good about where we are at this point in the season,” said Mark, as the series approaches its midway point. “We’re going to some of our strong tracks right now; especially Calgary’s Race City Speedway. We finished second there last year to our teammate Dave Whitlock in the MOPAR 300 and we had that race won the year before we got into it with a lapped car. We’re excited heading to that track for a MOPAR-sponsored event with our new Dodge Charger. The track owes us a win.”

RACE NOTES:
Kerry Micks won the CASCAR race at the Toronto Indy, ahead of another former series champ Peter Gibbons. Points leader Don Thomson Jr. was third… The next CASCAR Super Series event is the MOPAR 500 Race Weekend at Calgary’s Race City Speedway (July 22-23).

CASCAR POWER WATER SERIES: Cayuga Summary & Results

Munro wins Sunday’s rain-delayed CASCAR PowerWater Sportsman Series race at Cayuga 2000 Speedway

HAMILTON, ON – CASCAR PowerWater Sportsman Series veteran Steve Munro won Sunday afternoon’s 100-lap feature race at Cayuga 2000 Speedway. The event, which was originally scheduled for Saturday night at the 5/8-mile banked speedway, was moved to Sunday by inclement weather.

Munro, who hails from Carp, Ontario, started third in the 21-car field and took the lead from Dion Verhoeven just before the halfway point of the race. Verhoeven’s McRoberts Fuels Pontiac started on the pole and showed the way for the first 47 laps until giving way to Munro’s Chevy.

Verhoeven held on for second place at the finish, less than a quarter of a second behind Munro, whose only other PowerWater Series victory came on August 13, 2003 at his hometrack; Ottodrome Int’l Speedway, near Ottawa.

Finishing third on Sunday at Cayuga was multi-time Sportsman Series champ Steve Robblee, of Dorchester, ON. Ironically, the Grogan / McRobert Propane Ford Taurus driver also claimed the final podium position in Munro’s ’03 win at Ottodrome.

Sunday’s race at Cayuga was the third CASCAR PowerWater Sportsman Series race of the season. The next outing for the Sportsman Series takes place August 13 at Barrie Speedway. Barrie, ON racer Ron Lethbridge led all 100 laps of the July 2 PowerWater Series race at his hometrack.
