RUMOURS: Paul Tracy, Champ Car and the IRL

A few days ago, TSN thought it was "curious" that Paul Tracy wasn't mentioned in a team press release announcing the merger of his team with another.

"Canadian Paul Tracy has a contract with Forsythe through 2011, and while he was curiously left off this week's announcement concerning the merger with Pettit, Tracy is expected to be one of two or possibly three drivers with the team next season."

Fast forward a few days and the Champ Car forums are full of talk that PT may be done racing for Forsythe and possibly in Champ Car.

Today, a poster purporting to be Tracy's mother wrote the following on Champ Car Fanatics:

"Here's the heart of the matter from a real "insider". PT has a binding four year contract with Forsythe Racing, with no "out" clauses and no "performance" clauses on either side, and with both parties committed to the contract until the end of the four years. As far as PT is concerned, he is prepared to honour his commitment to this contract. He is not sure FCR has the same aspirations. Where this will end up no one knows, but if PT gets released from Champ Car, he will continue to race somewhere, be it IRL, ALMS, NASCAR wherever, as this is what he does ."

IRL???? Wow.

Ma Tracy's remark about Paul possibly racing in the IRL is giving them fits at ChampCarFanatics. Some are saying it will be the death of the Toronto race. Others are already moving toward the classic "his skills were slipping, we don't need him, F'im if he goes" line. PT fans are getting attacked for saying they'd watch him in the IRL. Hilarious! It seems like the less relevant the series becomes, the more fanatical its remaining devotees are.

Paul Tracy going to the IRL sounds bizarre but it might be the best thing for him. He will be 39 in a couple of weeks. Oval racers can stay competitive longer (it is not easier, just a different skill set). Champ Car is all road courses now. PT only has one win in the last 36 races. He is a GREAT oval racer. Give him a decent car and he would be a championship contender in the IRL. He would win a lot more races there than he will in Champ Car. He could go out a winner. It would be great. Imagine the rivalry with Penske and Andretti-Green! Imagine PT winning Indy and taking Tony George's money! The chances of it happening are about a million to one but it would be the most exciting thing to happen in North American open wheel racing in years.

Tracy in the IRL would be a riot. It would freak out the champcarfanatics AND the hardcore Gomers. Those fanatics have done as much as anyone to hurt OW racing. Tracy doing NCATS is a great idea. He needs stock car experience if he wants to do NASCAR.

It would be tough for Tracy to continue to work for GF after the dirty laundry was aired out at the Fanatics Forum.

As far as PT racing at Indy, well, I say bring it on. It would be altogether fitting and proper for him to return after getting handed his walking papers at The Series Formerly Known as CART.

Tracy could retire from racing and get a paycheck from the IRL or Nascar.

The last time he drove one of the IRL crapwagons he won so we know he can do it.
