Greg Belyea and his Excel Tower Service race team have had a phenomenal 2011 racing season, winning seven feature events, the Brighton Speedway track championship, and finishing second overall in points at Chapman’s Can Am Motorsports Park in Lafargeville, New York. Belyea entered this past weekend with just two more events remaining on his schedule, beginning with a Friday night event at Fulton Speedway in the Go Nuclear Late Model Challenge Series.
Belyea holds the distinction at Fulton Speedway as the first ever feature winner in the Crate Late Model division at the track when he won on opening night back in 2010. Belyea had struggled in his last appearance at the track, and was hoping to finish out the Go Nuclear Late Model Challenge Series with a strong run.
“We are at a bit of a disadvantage here because most cars run the American Racer tire, and we decided not to buy a set just for this one race, and we are still on our regular Hoosier tires that we race at Can Am and Brighton”, says Belyea. “We still hope to get a good finish here and have some fun”.
In the 25 lap main event, Belyea started from deep in the field in 23rd position. After getting caught up in a wreck on lap two, Belyea had minimal damage and was able to continue on. It was a struggle right from the start, and when the checkered flag was displayed to the field, he was credited with a 16th place finish.
“It was tough going out there, and we realized that it probably would be”, says Belyea after the race. “We wanted to come down here and support Shayne (Tenace) and the Go Nuclear Series and we had a good time”.
The final race of the 2011 season for Belyea will come on Thursday night at Rolling Wheels Raceway in Elbridge, New York with the World of Outlaw Late Models. The Excel Tower Service team will be looking to end the season with a good performance against the best of the best when it comes to Late Model Racing.
