NCATS: Gaunt Brothers Racing tabs NASCAR West champ Jason Bowles to drive at Mosport

CORNELIUS, NC - Gaunt Brothers Racing announced today that reigning NASCAR K&N Pro Series champion Jason Bowles will drive the No.11 Triad Racing Technologies racecar in next weekend's Vortex Brake Pads 200 at the Mosport Int'l Speedway.

Bowles, a former karting champion from California, carries an impressive résumé which includes K&N Series wins the last two years at Infineon Raceway.  GBR's regular driver John Gaunt will step out of the car for the road racing events in 2010, focusing on the ovals.

"I told my brother Marty early on that if we were going to do this thing right and build this team for the long haul, we should probably be working on developing a driver," said Gaunt, fresh off a top-5 finish in the season's opening race at Delaware.  "The road courses have never been my strong suit, so we thought it would be a good opportunity to take a guy like Jason who has the credentials, and give him a shot. We're all pretty excited about going to Mosport and seeing what we can do there with him in the seat."

Bowles has spent the last three seasons in the NASCAR K&N West Series where he won nine races, nine poles and the championship in 2009.  Four of his wins came on the twisting road circuits, and with a background in top-level shifter kart racing including multiple championships, road racing is something Bowles enjoys.

"I wish they had more road races in NASCAR to be honest; I look forward to these events," said Bowles.  "Getting a chance with GBR and going to a place like Mosport in the Canadian Tire Series is going to be great.  The cars are similar to what I ran in the west, the biggest difference is probably the level of competition.  The guys up in Canada are tough, they run these cars every year and know these tracks.  You don't have a lot of drivers from what I've been told that are learning to race like maybe you do in the West or East Series down here in the states.  This is the top level in Canada, the field is really strong and full of veterans.  These guys get after it, so I'm looking forward to that."

Gaunt Brothers Racing is fresh off their first event of the year where they finished 4th at Delaware with driver John Gaunt behind the wheel.  It's a new team, but in name only.  GBR's core group has been together for over three years.

"We're a close team, we've got some new pieces here in cars and equipment," said crew chief Don Jacobson.  "But the guys have all been together for awhile.  I've done some homework on Jason and he's going to fit right in, this kid is a really good racecar driver.  Mosport's a tough, tough place, but we brought him in here knowing he can get up to speed quickly and try and help us put a win on the board."

With GBR building a new car for road racing, Bowles has not had an opportunity to test.  His only exposure to Mosport's twisting 2.5 mile track is through a high-end simulation machine at Triad Racing Technologies in North Carolina.

"It won't be the first time I've come to a track without testing and probably not the last," Bowles said.  "I raced Formula Fords at Mosport a few years back, so I've been there.  Compared to the cars we're racing next weekend though, it's totally different.  The simulator has been great to get a feel for what a stock car will be like there.  Knowing the turns and layout is a big help; the simulation is very realistic in that respect."

NCATS: Micks has an up and down day at Delaware

LONDON, ON - After an up and down day at the first event on the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series 2010 tour Kerry Micks brought the No. 02 Beyond Digital Imaging/Dickies Ford Fusion across the finish line in 9th.

Micks started the day with a great practice run where he posted the forth quickest time and qualified even better, putting the 02 BDI/Dickies Ford Fusion in third place to start the race.

Micks stated that he was thrilled with qualifying, “This is a brand new car so we were able to see what it’s capable of.”

The first 10 laps of the Keystone Light 200 were not looking good for Micks as he ended up at the back of the pack, but dickies logo 300dpihe fought hard and was running as high as forth when he got a flat tire and went down a lap late in the race. Luck, however, was on Kerry’s side when there was a caution with two laps to go and he was the benefactor of the free pass award therefore got his lap back. Micks restarted the race at the back of the pack and was able to avoid the wrecks on the last lap to finish in 9th place.

After the race Kerry commented that “The car was great for most of the race, but there were a lot of ups and downs. We managed to lead a lap so all in all it was a great learning experience and I’m looking forward to next week”

Finish:  1. D.J Kennington, 2. JR Fitzpatrick, 3. Jeff Lapcevich 6. Kerry Micks.

The Delaware 200 presented by Keystone Light will be aired on TSN on Saturday, June 12th at 2 p.m. EST.

NCATS: Steckly runs up front early in Delaware NASCAR opener

LONDON, ON - Scott Steckly driver of the No. 22 Racing/Canadian Tire Dodge had a solid first half in the Delaware 200 presented by Keystone Light but several incidents kept them from the deserved finish and they posted a 16th place finish. Steckly qualified the Canadian Tire Dodge in the 11th position. “We didn’t qualify where we had hoped, but we have a great car,” said Steckly after qualifying.

Steckly stayed out of trouble early on in the race and was steadily moving up through the pack to third place before pitting. After restarting at the back of the pack the No.22 ran into traffic and got caught up in a wreck on lap 137, but still managed to stay on the lead lap. After fixing the car and restarting 12th, another wreck occurred on Lap 141 putting Steckly down a lap. From there Scott got caught up in more slow traffic and other people’s wrecks. “I just could not go anywhere, there was caution, after caution and we couldn’t get to the front to get our lap back.” said a disappointed Steckly after the race. On a positive note the car was running terrific and the team is excited about the next oval race which takes place in St. Eustache in a few weeks time.

The Delaware 200 presented by Keystone Light will be aired on TSN on Saturday, June 12th at 2 p.m. EST.

The next event for the No.22 Canadian Tire Dodge will be at Mosport International Raceway, just outside of Bowmanville, ON. Steckly posted the second quickest time and started on the front row for this event one year ago. For more event information please visit www.mosport.com.

Lapcevich impressive in NASCAR Canadian Tire Series opener; Third place finish a great start for Grimsby racer

June 5, 2010, KOMOKA, ON – Jeff Lapcevich dodged last-lap accidents to score an impressive third place finish in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series opener at Delaware Speedway Saturday night.

Scattered showers all around the London area speedway made track conditions difficult, but the Grimsby, Ontario, driver overcame adverse conditions to find the podium.
"I don't think I've ever had to dodge so many accidents," said the Tim Hortons/Castrol-sponsored driver after the race. "There was two on the last lap alone.

"This really feels good. We had the cars rebuilt in North Carolina this winter, and we've made changes on the crew and in the shop. It's a big morale booster to come out and run this strong. I couldn't be happier for Tim Hortons and the rest of our sponsors."

Lapcevich qualified a disappointing 12th in time trials, but he steadily moved to the front early in the race. With rain looming over the speedway Lapcevich's new crew chief Rob "Bucket" Torrey elected to gamble by staying on the race track when most cars pitted for fresh tires. The gamble forced Lapcevich to drive a loose handling race car, but it saw him lead briefly mid-race.

After being shuffled back on a restart, Lapcevich finally pitted for fresh tires with less than 50 laps to go. The chances of regaining a top spot seemed slim for Lapcevich, but opportunity knocked in the closing laps.

"The late race restarts were crazy," said Lapcevich. "Everyone was racing really aggressively. The last restart with two laps left was wild."

Lapcevich restarted seventh with two laps remaining. The ensuing carnage was a challenge. With one lap remaining Lapcevich was outside the top five, but two separate accidents on the closing lap changed everything. Lapcevich narrowly avoided the carnage to come home third behind DJ Kennington of St. Thomas, and JR Fitzpatrick of Cambridge.

"I was happy to just keep the car in one piece on that last lap," he said. "When I realized we finished third I was pretty excited."

Lapcevich returns to one of his favourite race tracks next weekend when the Canadian Tire Series heads to Mosport International Raceway. The veteran road racer always shows well on the road course, and momentum is a big factor in stock car racing.

"We've finished our last few seasons fairly wellg," recalled Lapcevich. "It's reassuring to start this strong. The crew has worked hard for this."

McColm's stellar season opener ruined 300 meters from the finish; Ajax driver sees top-five run disappear with last-lap crash

June 5, 2010, KOMOKA, ON – Joey McColm's career-best NASCAR race in the Canadian Tire Series opener at Delaware Speedway near London, Ontario, was ruined on the last lap Saturday night. The Ajax, Ontario, driver appeared destined for a podium result when contact with another car sent him careening into the outside wall.

The UltimateDrivers.ca Dodge suffered heavy damage, and McColm was unable to finish. The official tally shows McColm 13th, but the young talent feels he deserved better. "We had a great car at the end of the race," said McColm. "It's hard to explain how disappointing that crash was.

"Our team came into this season with so much enthusiasm. We've added Ultimate Drivers and WATCH IT! as sponsors, and the cars are the best they've ever been. We'll rebound from tonight's crash, but a top-three finish would have been awesome."

McColm qualified 13th in the competitive Canadian Tire Series field, but the team remained confident they could perform. Crew chief John Fletcher joked before the race that they could make the 13th starting spot lucky.

Pending rain caused various race strategies, but McColm's pit crew worked well on pit road. In the race's closing laps McColm found himself well inside the top-10.

The final restart with just a couple laps remaining led to carnage on the fast 1/2 mile speedway. McColm dodged a first mishap in turn one, and he emerged from the melee in the top five. Race officials allowed the race to stay under a green flag condition for drivers to determine the outcome on track. With just two corners remaining, McColm made contact with another car and crashed hard into the back stretch wall..

He fell from third to 13th in the blink of an eye. The UltimateDrivers.ca Dodge was unable to complete the final 300 meters.

"We'll rebound and head to the Mosport road course for next weekend's race," said McColm. "I feel like our program is really coming along on the road courses, and I've been anxious to get to Mosport all winter. I started racing on oval tracks, but I'm starting to feel like we're more competitive on the road courses recently.

"It's exciting how fast the car was. We just need some luck to go with our speed."

DJ KENNINGTON WINS AT DELAWARE

June 6, 2010. St. Thomas, Ontario’s DJ Kennington, driver of the #17 Castrol Edge/Mahindra Tractors Dodge put name at the top of the contenders for the 2010 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series Championship with a victory in race number one of the season. At the Keystone Light 200 Saturday evening at Delaware Speedway near London, Ontario Kennington made it his second consecutive victory at his home racetrack.

The day started off with a huge challenge for the #17 Castrol Edge/Mahindra Tractors Dodge team when after only five laps of practice a problem was noticed with the motor. Not wanting to take any chances the team swapped engines and were ready to make their scheduled qualifying run. Kennington set the tone when he put in a blistering lap of 19.22 seconds and scored pole position with an average speed of 93.652 MPH around the half mile oval. “What an effort by the whole team” said Kennington. “All my guys worked so hard that was a great reward for their efforts” he added.

As the green flag waved and wet weather loomed Kennington took off in the #17 Castrol Edge/Mahindra Tractors Dodge and had little trouble leading the first seventy five laps of the scheduled 200. “I think that Castrol Edge gave us an edge” he smiled and stated. “The car was so good right from the start of the race. It’s a great feeling as a driver”.

Rain was looming around the track and the #17 Castrol Edge/Mahindra Tractors Dodge team debated when to make their scheduled pit stops. “We weren’t sure if we’d get the all the laps in but as we got close to half way we decided to make our stop so we’d still have to time to get back toward the front” explained Kennington.

Deep in the field the #17 Castrol Edge/Mahindra Tractors Dodge driver then had to avoid the many racing incidents. “It got a little wild sometimes” said Kennington but I just kept going and pretty soon we were back up at the front”. he added.

Kennington would take over the lead for good on lap 160 but a late race caution period made things tense. The event would end under a green, white checker sprint and Kennington faced a hard charging #84 car. “I just took off and we body slammed pretty good going into corner one” said the driver. “But he went a bit high going into turn three and we managed to hang on for the win.

It’s just feels so good to win here at home” stated the #17 Castrol Edge/Mahindra Tractors Dodge driver. “When you have a day like we did you really find out how many friends you’ve got and we’ve got a lot of them. I just want to thank everybody on the team, our great support as always from Castrol, Mahindra Tractors, Contact Welding, and Hitachi Tools who have come on board with us this year. This is a fantastic way to start off the season” he concluded.

Round number two of the 2010 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series season will take place next weekend, June 12th & 13th on the famed Road Course at Mosport International Raceway. All races will be televised on TSN. The Keystone Light 200 will air at 2PM Eastern on June 12th. BEST EVER FINISH FOR PIERRE BOURQUE

London, ON. (June 6, 2010) NASCAR Driver Pierre Bourque began his 2010 Canadian NASCAR racing season this past Saturday at Delaware Speedway near London, Ontario in the Keystone Light 200.

Bourque along with the #00 Telus Dodge team worked exhaustively throughout the entire day to improve the handling and performance of the race car and achieve a strong finish to start the season. Their efforts were rewarded with his best ever series result.

New this season Pierre’s #00 Telus Dodge entry is fielded by DJK Motorsports. Moving to a new team presents challenges for a driver to communicate to his new team how the car is handling and what changes are necessary to achieve maximum results. This process takes time and it was a struggle for the #00 Telus Dodge team early in the day. Bourque would begin the 200 lap feature event from the tail end of the field.

“I didn’t start well today, but wasn’t at all discouraged because the team was working so hard, they worked as a team and I knew we could only get better” said the driver. Bourque would go down a lap to the leaders but did regain it after improving on every circuit around the half mile oval and staying away from the many incidents on the track.

As the laps ticked away and rain showers were looming Bourque continued to maintain as consistent and quick a pace as he could in the #00 Telus Dodge and his efforts were rewarded. A late caution period set the field up for a green, white checker finish and Bourque took advantage of the situation. As cars were colliding ahead of him Pierre was able to gain spots right up until the final lap and concluded the race with a sixth place finish.

At the conclusion of the race Pierre Bourque was extremely pleased with the efforts of the entire #00 Telus Dodge team and very pleased about their first effort of the 2010 season together. “Not only was it was a lot of fun to start from the back and finish where I did, but it’s the very best finish that I’ve ever had in the series, so to start off the season, what more could I ask for”

DEREK WHITE SCORES TOP-TEN FINISH AT DELAWARE

June 6, 2010. Racer Derek White and the #99 DPW/OCR Gaz Bar Race Team have worked extremely hard during the off season preparing for their first year of competition in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series. At race number one of the season, The Keystone Light 200, at Delaware Speedway near London, Ontario the team’s efforts were rewarded with a splendid seventh place finish.

The #99 DPW/OCR Gaz Bar team worked tirelessly during practice but didn’t quite have the car handling perfectly. White would only be able to manage a seventeenth place starting spot on the grid and knew he would have to be patient despite the rain showers that were approaching.

When the 200 lap event began White kept to his approach. “I just waited, waited and saved my tires, saved gas and let the guys battle it out” said the driver. “You’ve got to be so patient and let the race come to you” he added. The #99 DPW/OCR Gaz Bar driver was rewarded for his efforts as he began to make progress in the field.

Despite the threat of an early end the #99 DPW/OCR Gaz Bar car driver maintained his approach and further improved his position late in the race. “I just stayed calm and waited for chances to snake through the mayhem out there” he smiled. “There were a lot of guys who were a lap down that were trying to get it all back and I just kept steady, tried to hold a good pace and did my best to avoid all the contact," he added.

The 200 lap event would have a total of thirteen caution periods for 101 laps and through it all the #99 DPW/OCR Gaz Bar car driver Derek White maintained his composure and finished with a seventh place result. “I was a bit lucky for sure, I don’t know how I got through it all, a couple of them were really close but this is the first top-ten I’ve had and I love it. I’m really excited and that’s the way to start the year. I’m ready for that road course next week” he concluded.

The #99 DPW/OCR Gaz Bar Race Team would like to thank the following sponsors for their support during the 2010 season: Game Busters, MJ Construction, LES Terraces enenchates, Snakes Poker and O.T.T.

Derek White and the #99 DPW/OCR Gas Bar Team will return to action June 12th & 13th for round two of the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series at Mosport International Raceway June 12th & 13th. The team plans to compete in all thirteen series races this season. As in years past all NCATS races will also be seen on TSN. The Keystone Light 200 will air at 2PM Eastern on June 12th. TEAM MOPAR BATTLES BACK FOR A TOP-TEN FINISH

June 6, 2010. Ron Beauchamp and the #60 Mopar Parts/Mobil 1/Exide Batteries team arrived at Delaware Speedway near London, Ontario for the Keystone Light 200, round one of the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series expecting a challenging night from the competition. The hard fought duel on the track came as no surprise and Beauchamp was more than up to the task.

The #60 Mopar Parts Dodge was quick during the afternoon practice session and Beauchamp posted the fifth quickest time in qualifying. “It was a solid day early on for our team” said Beauchamp. “The car was a little loose but I knew it would race well, and a top-five starting spot is very good for the first race of the season” he added.

The green flag waved thirty minutes early due to an impending storm and Beauchamp wanted to make the the most of what might be a rain shortened race. “The #60 Mopar Parts Dodge was a little off in the early going and I did drop a few positions” said the driver. “Crew Chief Chris Couvillion made the call for an early pit stop for an adjustment and that really helped the handling” he stated.

As Beauchamp returned the #60 Mopar Parts Dodge to the fight he immediately began improving his position and was soon inside the top-five runners. “The car was performing perfectly” he said excitedly. “Then the racing well…..she got a little rough out there. Everybody knew the rain was close by and everyone was getting a little too aggressive and we got chopped across the nose by the #9 car. I was up to his door and he just came across and didn’t seem to care that I had the inside on him.”

The contact would set Beauchamp back in the field but with an improved handling #60 Mopar Parts Dodge he would again move toward the front of the field looking for a very good finish with the green, white checker finish that was looming after late caution flag. On the restart once again all competitors were extremely aggressive and Beauchamp was collected in another incident. “I got caught in something out there and I got hooked together with the #3 car and I couldn’t get loose” said the frustrated driver. “We did manage to shake loose and we came up with an eighth place finish, but the #60 Mopar Parts/Mobil 1/Exide Batteries car was even better than the result. I just want to thank everybody for their support, and to my whole team who worked really hard all day. Now that we’ve got the first one underway, I’m even more pumped up about the rest of the season” he said excitedly.

Ron Beauchamp Jr and the #60 Mopar Parts/Mobil 1/Exide Batteries Dodge Team will compete in all thirteen races on the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series. Round number two is next weekend, June 12th & 13th on the road course at Mosport International Raceway. All events this season will again be broadcast on TSN, the Keystone Light 200 airs at 2PM Eastern on Saturday June 12th. RAIN SHORTENS SCHEDULE AT DELAWARE SPEEDWAY... Steve Book wins Transmission Direct Enduro Race... NASCAR Canadian Tire Series race TONIGHT (Saturday) at Delaware...

Heavy rain and some thunderstorm activity put a temporary halt to the action at Delaware Speedway 5 laps into the Demar Aggregate Trucks feature race.  Devon Bloemendal , winner of the night’s first Truck heat, had been leading with Matt Korcina in second when the 25 lap feature was called because of the weather.

After a brief delay to allow the worst of the storm pass over the half-mile track, the Transmission Direct Enduro cars came off pit road for their 35 lapper.

Doug Capp was the early leader and several cars endured some slipping and sliding in the first few laps but were able to right themselves.  Steve Book took over the lead on lap 9 and held on to win the race despite a bumper-to-bumper threat from David McCullough, who had won the division’s second heat earlier in the night.  Piet Blaaubeor made several impressive runs to avoid ending third but that’s where he landed.

On lap 19, Capp had an apparent mechanical problem and had to leave the track.

The race’s only caution was called on lap 23 as Dave Goertz hit the wall in turn three and sustained some damage to the right front of his #15.

The other Transmission Direct Enduro heat race was taken by Todd Head.

The second Demar Aggregate Truck heat was won by Paul Fothergill.

NASCAR Late Model Heats were won by Dion Verhoeven and Scott Lindsay.

TONIGHT, race fans and drivers from all over this country and parts of the U.S. will be at Delaware Speedway for the opening race in the NASCAR Canadian Tires Series.  The action starts long before the big race.  The main gate opens at 1 pm so fans can watch some of the best racers in Canada run through their practice laps.  Super Stock time trials begin at 4:30 with the main Super Stock race at 6, NCATS time trials at 5:15 and the main race at 8 pm.

Lots of campers are taking advantage of Delaware Speedway’s campground this weekend and there’s a festival atmosphere at the track with plenty of displays on Saturday and of course, lots of great food provided by the concessions.

NCATS: Durham racers to run in NASCAR event at Mosport

BOWMANVILLE, ON – Oshawa's David Thorndyke and Ajax's Joey McColm will be competing at their home track in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series Vortex 200 at Mosport International Raceway on June 13. Thorndyke will be running a limited season schedule in his #67 Thorsons EVT 2007 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS.  He will be sticking to the road courses in 2010 which includes Mosport, the Toronto Street Course on July 17, The Grand-Prix de Trois Rivieres on August 15 and conclude at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on August 29.

"I have been in the Canadian Tire Series since it started but with limited schedules every season," said Thorndyke.  "With running only two or three races a year, I've only got about a full season of experience under my belt.  We will be running a new motor this year and I am really excited about it.  I would be thrilled if I can get a top-10 finish."

The 53-year-old has been racing since 1988 and his company, Thorsons EVT is the corporate sponsor for the Mosport Speedway home class Six or Less.

"Mosport is awesome," proclaimed Thorndyke.  "Regardless if it's my home track or not, it's such a cool track to run on.  A track like that, with all the elevation changes, it just makes it challenging but a lot of fun to drive."

Thorndyke is the president of Thorsons EVT (Enclosed Vehicle Transportation) which he runs with his brother.  They currently have a fleet of 13 trucks all of which are 53 feet and they haul cars from coast to coast.

"All of our transports are enclosed," explained Thorndyke.  "There are no open carriers so that what we transport is protected."

Joey McColm of Ajax is a NASCAR Canadian Tire Series Veteran at the tender age of 24.  He has been with the series since its inception back in 2007 and will run a full-season schedule in 2010.  McColm who will be driving the #50 Ultimate Drivers.ca Dodge Avenger caught the racing bug as a teenager.

"My dad used to take me to Mosport every Saturday night and I told him that I had to get into that somehow," the Ajax resident proclaimed. "When I was 15, we built my first car and I started racing.  To grow up around Mosport and to be able to race there is pretty special."

McColm has been noted as one of the more personable drivers in the series and can often be seen signing autographs and interacting with his many fans.

Off-track the 24-year-old is a Civil Engineering student at Ryerson University in Toronto.  Upon graduation, he plans on enrolling in a Masters of Business Administration (M.B.A.) program and major in marketing.  McColm is also involved in several charities such as The Children's Breakfast Club of Canada, Racing Against Drugs, Ontario Special Olympics, The Ride to Conquer Cancer and Hope With Wheels.

Racing starts Friday (June 11) with a full-day of testing for all series' but the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series.  Saturday (June 12) will have both practice and qualifying in the morning, followed by races for the Castrol Touring cars, F2000 Championship and OFFC-F1600. Sunday (June 13) morning opens with more qualifying and then races in F2000, NASCAR, Castrol Touring and OFFC-F1600 to close out the weekend.

For more information and to purchase tickets call the Mosport Hotline at 1-800-866-1072 (Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm ET), visit online at www.mosport.com, or email info@mosport.com

BOURQUE READY FOR NASCAR SEASON OPENER

Ottawa, ON. (June 2, 2010) NASCAR Driver Pierre Bourque has a new team, a new car number, and a new sense of optimism going into the start of the 2010 Canadian NASCAR season, set to begin June 5th at Delaware Speedway near London, Ontario.

For the past several years, Bourque has run in select Canadian NASCAR events as part of the Whitlock Motorsports team. With former stock car champ Dave Whitlock hanging up his helmet and withdrawing from the racing business at the end of '09, Bourque reached an agreement with DJ Kennington and DJK Racing to provide him with top quality equipment for this year's campaign.

“I couldn’t be happier about coming aboard with DJ and the whole team” said Bourque. “He's a hungry driver and a team owner with a proven track record as a front runner fielding well-prepared cars. I’m thrilled to come aboard. It gives us a solid footing for success every race we'll do together this season."

So far, the team's been out testing at two venues on this season's schedule, Kawartha and Delaware speedways. “The two sessions were a great opportunity for everyone to get to know each other and to feel each other out” said the driver. “With a new team it takes a little time to explain what I’m looking for in the car and for the team to understand what I’m telling them” he added.

Both team and driver are confident they will improve performance as the season develops. DJ Kennington, who built Bourque's racing car, is equally pleased with how things have gone so far. “You couldn’t ask for a better teammate than Pierre”, said Kennington. “He’s professional and passionate. He knows what he wants and what the car needs to get better. He's extremely media-savvy and a sponsor's dream from a marketing and spokesperson's perspective. I’m really excited about the season” he added.

Also new for Pierre Bourque this year is a new number. Bourque will drive the #00 this season. Aaron’s is back as our primary sponsor for many races. They run #00 in the NASCAR Sprint Cup so it seemed right to align with them up here. Later this season, Bourque will also carry sponsorship from Mahindra Tractors for the Trois-Rivieres event.

About Pierre Bourque: Pierre Bourque will participate in select events of the 2010 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series. New this season Bourque will pilot the #00 Dodge prepared by DJK racing. Pierre is supported in this year’s effort by Aaron’s, Mahindra Tractors, Telus Mobility and Mohawk Internet Technology. You can watch all of the 2010 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series events on TSN. FENWICK FLYER: ONWARD AND UPWARD

by Tommy Goudge (June 3, 2010) - Tom Huppunen's 2010 racing season hasn't gone according to plan so far after a spin in the first week, and a crash last Friday. The Fenwick, Ontario-based driver and the #12c Best Western Cairn Croft Hotel will try to get back on track this Friday, June 4 at Ohsweken Speedway as they look to defend their 2009 championship in the Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Car division.

On opening night, Tom had a race-long battle for the fifth position with Kyle Moffit. With just two laps to go Tom got high in turn three and spun to a stop. He salvaged an eleventh place finish.

In week two, Tom's night ended in his heat race when a car got sideways in front of him and Tom had nowhere to go. The #12c rolled over, causing enough damage to force the team out of action.

"The car should be fixed after tonight," said Tom on Monday. "We’ve got to straighten the right front torsion tube. The frame will still be a little bent but it won’t affect the handling. We will run some of last year's stuff to get by."

Tom and the team are testing out a new line of tires for Competition Tire Canada/Goodyear Racing.

"They've donated two left rear tires to test. They are the first ones from their new line of sprint tires and are equivalent to the Hoosier left rears that we usually run in every way - weight, size, and durometer reading."

Tom and the team would also like to welcome three new sponsors to the fold:

Five Star Racing Products, builders of Mod-Lite race cars, and suppliers of REAL Racing Wheels and WINTERS Racing components to the #12c team.

Excalibur Crossfit is on board helping Tom start a new fitness regimen. Check them out at www.ExcaliburCrossfit.com.

OMNI Media in St. Catharines is helping out too. Look for some new Fenwick Flyer videos later this summer.

This Friday, June 4, Tom and the rest of the Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Car regulars from Ohsweken Speedway will take part in the first round of the "Battle on the Grand" versus the traveling New York-based ASCS Patriots series. Despite the slow start to his season, Tom is considered one of the favourites heading into the night.

TOM'S TRIVIA
This Friday's race is on June 4. Tom has raced a Sprint Car once before on that date - a feature win with the Southern Ontario Sprints tour at Ransomville Speedway on Friday, June 4, 1999. It was the Fenwick Flyer's first career Sprint Car feature win.

WHAT'S HUPPUNEN?
Randy from Woodstock asks: "Do you think racing at Ohsweken weekly gives you and the other local racers an advantage when the travelling series come to town?"

Tom answers: "No, I don`t think racing weekly is an advantage here at Ohsweken. I believe the team that can read the track and set up the car accordingly with a driver that can adapt his/her driving style will be up front. I believe the key to success is a mixture of experience and knowledge bound together with a heavy dose of good luck!"

Tom and the #12c team would like to thank all their sponsors and partners for their support during the 2010 season, including Best Western Cairn Croft Hotel, NGK Spark Plugs, Cobra Motorhomes & Trailers, Five Star Racing Products, Excalibur Crossfit, OMNI Media, Jawzy Graphics, Kim Arndt Photography, Niagara Custom Powder Coating, Gaerte Engines, Maxim Racing Chassis, Mom's Videography, Colleen, Meghan, Andrew and Jimmy's Crew Service, MW Graphics and Outlaw R/C Motorsports.

Do you want to be an insider and have "Fenwick Flyer" delivered straight to your inbox? Got a question for Tom? Just send an e-mail to tommygoudge@hotmail.com and we'll do the rest. Questions will be featured in future editions of "Fenwick Flyer", so be sure to include your name and hometown!

If you're a Facebook or YouTube user, make sure to join the official Fenwick Flyer groups by searching "Tom Huppunen".

Ohsweken Speedway: Friday June 4 races cancelled by wetness

From Ohsweken Speedway

Mother Nature has done it to us again as Ohsweken Speedway management
has been forced to cancel all activities at the speedway scheduled for
today (Friday, June 4). Heavy rain during the last couple of days and
overnight has left the grounds saturated and standing water in the pits
and parking lot only indicate a recipe for trouble if we were to go
ahead as planned. "With the Patriots coming tonight and the travel
involved for them, it is essential to get the word out early regarding
the cancellation and waiting until later today would only delay the
inevitable," stated Glenn Styres.

Next Friday (June 11) we will try again as Trailers by Jim Bray presents
Haldimand County Night where everyone with proof of residence in
Haldimand County will be admitted for half price as the CORR/Pak
Sprints, Thunder Stocks, Mini Stocks, and Bombers resume their
Championship battles. Vintage cars and a Mini Van Figure 8 will also be
on the program. Pit gates will open at 5:30 with on track activities
scheduled to begin at 7:45.

COMPASS360 WELCOMES CARMEN & CAMILLE AS MARKETING PARTNERS - Canadian Powerhouse Music Duo Featured on Team's #76 Honda

(Watkins Glen, NY) -- With five podium finishes in five races so far this season, the bright orange Honda Civic Si's fielded by 2009 Grand-Am Street Tuner Champions Compass360 Racing (C360R) have reason to stand proud. At the upcoming Continental Tire 150 race on June 5th, they'll have reason to shine.

That's due to the fact that one of the hottest music acts in Canada has signed with the team as marketing partners on the #76 Honda, and the debut event is at the historic home of American sports car racing, Watkins Glen in upstate New York. Sisters Carmen & Camille, who currently are enjoying tremendous success on both sides of the border with their Juno-nominated hit single, "Shine 4U", are thrilled to be a part of the Grand-Am family.

"We're so excited to be involved in the series and to team up with Compass360 Racing," exclaimed Camille. "We're looking forward to coming out to some of the races this year, to meeting the fans and hopefully performing." Sister Carmen added, "We'll be doing our part to spice up the off-track action for those races that don't conflict with our touring dates!"
The #76 Honda will be piloted at the Glen by Vancouver-based Carlos Tesler-Mabe, who was instrumental in putting the musicians and the team together, as well as John Kuitwaard, who won the series' Lime Rock race in 2009. "These girls are the real deal," said Tesler-Mabe. "Music's been the driving force in their lives and it's so wonderful for them to have the opportunity to reach out to the Grand-Am fans." Tesler-Mabe has made two starts this year with the team, and finished in the top-ten both times.

Compass360 Racing is no stranger to non-traditional marketing partnerships, and were an integral part of the initial launch of Garth Stein's remarkable book, The Art of Racing in the Rain. The novel, which remains near the top of bookseller sales charts nearly three years after its debut, has been a worldwide hit with plans to have its cinematic release under the watchful eye of Patrick Dempsey's production company.

Likewise, Carmen & Camille's breakthrough song is one of the top dance songs in the country. Enjoy the music video here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=B8ehY5tutHs and find out more about the girls on their website at http://carmenandcamille.com/ .

Compass360 Racing (C360R) is the motorsports division of Compass360 Branding Communications, a firm offering marketing expertise to clients in diverse industries across North America. The team, with support from Honda of America, fields four front-running Honda Civic Si's in Grand-Am's Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge, and won series Championships in 2009 and 2007. The team also fields three Hondas in the Castrol Canadian Touring Car Championship with support from Durabond. For details visit http://c360r.com/.
Pop-rock twin sister duo, Carmen and Camille, have been compounding success with major national press in the US and Canada, several songs featured on national programs, as well as their recent Juno Nomination for Shine 4U. C&C have performed in cities all over the world including London, New York, Transylvania (Romania), Houston, Glasgow, Vancouver, Manchester, Toronto, Cairo, Fife, Boston, Budapest, Dubai, Austin, Crete, Brighton, LA, etc. They have had extensive media exposure in print, radio, online magazines, blogs, and social networks, with web impressions in the many tens of millions.

Cordeiro report; Season 3 - Susperstitions are just that! Third time wasn't a charm.

The past two seasons of Jetta TDI Cup have resulted in a rained-out weekend for New Jersey Motorsport Park. They had also concluded with somehow-someway, my car being put into the wall. We as racers have our own sort-of "racing religion". No green paint on cars, don't bring peanuts to the track, stepping on spiders makes it rain. These superstitions are interesting, how did they come to be? Third times a charm right? Well thankfully not! Otherwise I would have smoked the wall, again. That being said, I wouldn't have minded the rain, these Jetta's handle amazingly well in the rain and are very fun to pilot. Perhaps I should have stepped on a spider?

I felt pressured, pressured to stay off the wall. I wanted to break the "curse". Third times the charm, you know? I kept myself reserved. I found myself backpedaling. I knew that I was going slow in my sweet spot, but I was haunted by memories. I qualified 15th. About one second off pole position. Could have been worse, tight field. It was a decent comprimise. How so? I kept my mental stability in check, didn't hit the wall and improved myself from last year. Yeah, I had more in me this year but I didn't go balls to the wall in fear of it becoming more than a pun.

I took my third NJMP weekend in strides. In fact, we all did. We had a surprise fitness test. Each of us had to jog about four and a half miles and when we got back to the track we did about 45 minutes of strength and cardio training. Volkswagen is big on proper health and nutrition. This year, they have us on personalized physical training and nutritional schedules setup by Athletes Performance.

Anyhow, about the race. I was punked at the start. Everyone funneled into the inside lane going into turn one. Couldn't make a safe move. It was a very dicey first lap. A lot of shoving around and wild moves took place throughout the race. I had a near run in with a new guy, he had forced me off the track while I was making a pass. I overtook him on the outside of the corner, on the grass with nowhere else to go. He managed to fold in my mirror, it was that close. The pass stuck, great for TV. I brought my ViON, TrackMart, LevelTronic, Can-Alignment Motorsports, YNotSportShots, Inside Track News, Keizer Racing Wheels, and Malone Tuning Volkswagen - Jetta TDI to a 9th place finish. I must thank my supporters for their enormous help and encouragement throughout the season.

Grand-Am: AIM Autosport all primed for Six Hours of The Glen

WATKINS GLEN, NY - It has been a hectic week for the AIM Autosport crew with just four days between races as they moved from Lime Rock Park in Connecticut to Watkins Glen, New York for this weekend's Sahlen's Six Hours of The Glen. The entire team had a lot of work to do in preparing the car after what started as a rough outing at Lime Rock. The race had ended alright but not after the crew had to rebuild the car after an accident in qualifying and while Burt Frisselle and Mark Wilkins ran a fantastic race in the Pacific Mobile No. 61 Ford Riley, job one was to tear the car down and make sure it was fit to run a six hour enduro at the very fast Watkins Glen International.

The team took some extra time at Lime Rock to work on the car before loading for the trip to Watkins Glen and they were at the track early this morning going over every detail while the engineers started working out their plan for the race. Practice begins on Friday morning with qualifying that afternoon followed by an early-evening practice so that teams can get used to the changing conditions that could occur during the race into the sunset.

But the team goes into this race with some marked optimism after showing they could come back from adversity to run at the front at Lime Rock. Burt had the Pacific Mobile No. 61 Ford Riley near the front of the field through most of his stint and handed the car over to Mark from the second position. Mark would lead twenty laps and also never be far from the front.

"Burt and Mark both put in a terrific drive", commented Team Principal Ian Willis. "The crew did a great job getting us onto the starting grid after the accident and we had the car to run at the front. The only hiccup was when we missed the call on the last pit stop an not making it in before the caution. That cost us track position but Mark still fought back to finish in the top five."

He continued, "The result of all that hard work is that now we can come back this weekend at The Glen and make a run for the podium. We have a history here, taking the win on the short track in 2008, so now we'd like to add a win in the Six Hour to complete the package. The No 61 started from the front row in 2008. No reason we can't do that again and go on for the win."

In their first three appearances in the Sahlen's Six Hours of The Glen, AIM had three drivers in the car. This year, the team will do it with just Burt and Mark.

"The boys are fit and ready for this", said Willis. "Both have already done the Rolex 24 this year and the 6-hour race at Laguna a few weeks ago. Mark also competed in the 12 Hours of Sebring earlier this season. They have been training very hard."

To determine the benefits of that training, this weekend, founder and Chief Technologist of AIM's new technical partners, Biosign, will be on hand to demonstrate their UFIT® health monitoring system and determine how it can be used to enhance Mark and Burt's training regimen.

The GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series presented by Crown Royal Cask No. 16 presentation of the Sahlen's Six Hours of The Glen takes place on Saturday, June 5th. The race will be broadcast live in two, two-hour segments on SPEED TV starting at 2:00 p.m and 6:00 p.m. ET. The entire race will be carried live on MRN (Motor Racing Network) affiliates on the Sirius Satellite Network.

PATRIOTS INVADE OHSWEKEN SPEEDWAY FOR “BATTLE ON THE GRAND” THIS FRIDAY

by Tommy Goudge (June 2, 2010) – The first special event of the 2010 season hits the track at Ohsweken Speedway when the ASCS Patriots tour invades for the first round of the “Battle on the Grand” versus the Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Cars this Friday night, June 4. Best Western Cairn Croft Hotel is the presenting sponsor for this week’s third round of Friday Night Thunder, which also features the ESSO Thunder Stocks, ESSO Mini Stocks, and Bombers.

Two races for the Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Cars are already in the record books for 2010, while the ASCS Patriots have completed four out of five scheduled features so far. A large field of cars is expected to fill the pit area, as Friday’s event pays full points for both sanctioning groups, and it’s a qualifier event for ASCS Patriot tour regulars for the Village Pizza Ohsweken Shootout to be held during Canadian Sprint Car Nationals weekend in September.

Port Colborne’s Dave Dykstra is at the top of the list of Corr/Pak drivers looking to defend home turf heading into the weekend. Dykstra claimed a win on opening night and backed it up last week with a strong second place run. Dykstra is followed closely in the Corr/Pak standings by Kyle Moffit of South Dayton, NY who claimed the feature win last Friday night. Fellow New Yorker Jared Zimbardi is third in the Corr/Pak standings and also sits second in Patriots points, while Fenwick’s Jim Huppunen, and 2008 Corr/Pak champion Keith Dempster of Alton round out the top five.

The ASCS Patriots contingent is led by three time tour champion Bryan Howland of Savannah, NY, who claimed his first feature win of the season on Saturday night at Ohio’s Sharon Speedway. Zimbardi is second in the standings for the New York-based tour, followed by Tim Kelly of Rock Stream, NY, Williamsville, NY driver Don Adamczyk, and Bubba Broderick of Brookfield, Connecticut, who took the feature honours at Erie, Pennsylvania on Sunday.

The ESSO Thunder Stocks division featured another entertaining race last week, with Billy Bleich taking his second win in a row. By virtue of his strong start, the young driver from Port Robinson leads the Thunder Stock point standings, and is a marked man in the region after taking feature wins at all three area tracks over the weekend. Caledonia’s Ryan Dinning is just three points back of the lead after his second runner-up finish in a row last week. Mike Thorne’s season hasn’t gone the way he planned so far, but the Caledonia resident battled through various problems to sit third in the points after two weeks, while Dave Bailey of Hagersville and Grimsby driver Rob Disher round out the top five.

ESSO Mini Stocks action also saw a repeat winner last week as Trevor Goulding got the feature win. The Welland resident is eleven points ahead of Brantford’s Kevin Hilborn in the points chase, while Craig Erskine also of Brantford, Ohsweken’s Steve Hess, and Caledonia veteran Mike Evers finish off the top five. Former Mini Stock champ Abel Castelein has a large hole to climb out of in the standings after problems forced him to the sidelines last week. The veteran from Cayuga will be looking to bounce back this week with a strong run.

Record numbers in the Bomber division have produced wild races over the first two weeks. Last Friday, Rockton’s Dave Patton got his first career feature win, but he’s still outside the top five in the points standings. Opening night feature winner Karl Sault of Dundas leads the way over Waterdown’s Trevor Roszell, Jeremy Hughes of Burlington, Hamilton drivers Derek Chechalk and Kacey Huffman, and John Cote tied with Huffman for fifth.
