CASCAR SUPER SERIES: Kerry Micks mounts a late charge to win the ATTO 100 CASCAR Super Series race at the Molson Indy Toronto

TORONTO, ON – CASCAR Super Series veteran Kerry Micks won Sunday afternoon’s ATTO 100 CASCAR Super Series race at the Molson Indy Toronto. The PowerWater Ford Taurus driver started 11th in the field for the 36-lap chase around the 11-turn temporary street circuit and passed race leader Don Thomson with seven laps to go en route to his first-ever Toronto Indy win.

Thomson’s Home Hardware Chevy led from lap 8 and stretched out an almost 10-second lead on the rest of the field, before the handling went away quickly on his car. At that point, Micks started to carve into Thomson’s lead and it became just a matter of time before the Mt. Albert, ON racer was in position to challenge Thomson for first place. That opportunity came at the end of the long Lakeshore Blvd. straightaway on lap 29 as Micks out-braked the reigning National champion on the entry to turn 3.

Once in front, Micks was able to build a solid lead of his own as Thomson continued to struggle. On the last lap, Peter Gibbons was able to slide his Canadian Tire Chevy inside of Thomson, as the pair entered turn 1, to grab second-place. Micks took the checkered flag 8.4-seconds ahead of Gibbons, while Thomson hung on for the final podium position.

“This was at the top of my list for races to win and I can’t believe we actually did it,” said Micks after the race. “The PowerWater Ford was strong all day and it didn’t go away. This was just our second race with this car. It’s the product of years of input and experience and we finally had it right on. I was backing off a little bit early but about mid-way, it looked like there wasn’t going to be a caution so I knew I had to get going after Donnie. Obviously, I caught him pretty fast because his car went away pretty severely.”

Polesitter DJ Kennington led the first seven laps of the ATTO 100, but pitted suddenly just prior to the race’s second restart when he felt a tire going down on his Castrol Dodge Charger, thereby handing the lead to Thomson. CASCAR’s seventh appearance at the Molson Indy Toronto was slowed by two full-course caution flags for a total of four laps.

With his third-place finish, Thomson retained the Super Series points lead after five events. Fourth-place Toronto finisher Mark Dilley (PowerWater / Dodge / Mobil 1 / Exide Charger) moved into second-place in the overall standings. Tara MacLeod (Central Merchant Svcs. Ford) is the top rookie in the points, in 16th-place. The Innisfil, ON racer came home 24th in her inaugural Toronto Indy outing.

The next CASCAR Super Series event is the MOPAR 500 Race Weekend at Calgary’s Race City Motorsport Park, on July 22-23.

CASCAR: MacLeod and her Central Merchant Services #37 look forward to competing at Molson Indy for the first time

Toronto, ON – Driving the Central Merchant Services entry, rookie Tara MacLeod looks forward to competing in her very first closed street course race at the Molson Indy in Toronto this weekend.

“I’m a little nervous about this one, it’s a huge event and the course is pretty tight” she explained. ”I’ve taken a couple laps around the track in a street car, but that really can’t prepare me for the race. “

MacLeod heads into this race as she has all the others, looking to finish all the laps and leave the Molson Indy as the PowerWater rookie points leader.
The CASCAR Super Series will make its seventh consecutive appearance as part of the Molson Indy Toronto race weekend. And for the first time ever, Canada’s top home-grown racing series will be part of the Sunday feature program at the temporary Exhibition Place street circuit.
MacLeod currently leads the PowerWater CASCAR Super Series Rookie of the year standings, and is 15th in the 2005 CASCAR Super Series Points Championship.
The Molson Indy will take place July 8-10 in Toronto on the 11-turn, 2.824 km street circuit.

CASCAR: Team Fastline Jeff Lapcevich Shoots for Molson Indy Toronto Hat-Trick

“This is one string that we don’t want to see be broken.”

Toronto, ON – Team Fastline driver Jeff Lapcevich has his sights set on completing a hat-trick this weekend at the 20th Anniversary running of the Molson Indy Toronto in the Tim Hortons - EMCEA Transport #23 Chevrolet Monte Carlo.

“Our string of five consecutive road course wins was recently broken,” explained Lapcevich. “The Fastline Team have been working hard, making improvements to both Jimmy’s car and to mine. This is one string that we don’t want to see be broken.”
In 2004, Jeff Lapcevich dominated the CASCAR Super Series competition at road courses by winning three events, including the Molson Indy Toronto and Vancouver for the second consecutive season a well as the challenging Mosport Road Course event.
“I would really love a podium finish and to share the stage with Jeff. That’s something that we have never done and it would be really special,” smiled an enthusiastic Jim Lapcevich. “I’ve been dreaming about that for years, me crossing the finish line for the checker and Jeff just behind me….of course.”
The CASCAR Super Series will make its seventh consecutive appearance as part of the Molson Indy Toronto race weekend. And for the first time ever, Canada’s top home-grown racing series will be part of the Sunday feature program at the temporary Exhibition Place street circuit.
Team Fastline drivers Jeff and Jim Lapcevich currently sit seventh and eleventh in the 2005 CASCAR Super Series Points Championship.
The Molson Indy will take place July 8-10 in Toronto on the 11-turn, 2.824-km street circuit.

SOD: GELDART Grabs SOD Cash at I-96 Speedway

For Immediate Release – Ken Pelkie, Sprints On Dirt, Holt, MI
DATE: July 8/05 // TRACK: I-96 Speedway

With a night off on the All Star Circuit of Champions trail, seventeen year old Cody Geldart from Mossley, Ontario took advantage of the opportunity to travel to I-96 Speedway to “tune-up” for the “Full Throttle Nationals” scheduled on the half mile August 19 & 20. The results were as good as it gets as the young Canadian hot shoe blasted into the lead from his fourth place starting position to sweep the twenty lap Engine Pro, Sprints On Dirt series presented by Total Seal “A” Main.

With J.R. Stewart and Dain Naida pacing the twenty-one car starting field to the green flag, the duo accelerated through turns one and two side by side. As they entered turn three, Geldart, who was riding on the high side of the track used the momentum to carry him by both Naida and Stewart out of four and into the lead. From that point on, the race was for second.

Dustin Daggett moved from fifth into the runner-up spot on lap three but could never mount a serious challenge to Geldart as Stewart, Naida, and Gregg Dalman settled into third through fifth. Kyle Patrick moved up from ninth to challenge Dalman and Naida after a mid race caution for a blown engine on the Ryan Grubaugh machine but could not maintain the advantage and would finish sixth. Sean Robinson, Brett Mann, Matt Alloway, and Mark Broughman rounded out the top ten.

Incidents during hot laps eliminated the machines of Davey Brown with his second blown engine in a week, and a hard crash eliminated the Tim Norman mount for the night with heavy damage. Norman substituted in the Kyle Poortinga machine for the evening as SOD rules allow driver changes up to heat race time, thus allowing Norman to maintain a slim point lead over second place Ben Rutan.

SOD moves on to the tight quarter mile of Owendale Speedway July 9 for a twenty-five lap affair before the running of the mid-season championship at Crystal Motor Speedway on July 16. For all the latest news be sure to log on to the official website of SOD at www.sprintsondirt.com .

Preliminary action saw Dustin DAGGETT take the Ohsweken Speedway sponsored heat race #1 while the XYZ Machining heat race #2 went to Ben RUTAN. Rookie Louie CARUFEL captured the Engler Machining & Tool heat race #3 over Sean Robinson while Matt ALLOWAY captured the COMP Cams / Lane Automotive 4th and final heat race over Brett Mann. Ryan GRUBAUGH took the Engine Pro / Total Seal “B” Main.

SHOULDICE ALSTAR: Kawartha Summary & Results

Shaw takes second ALSTAR win of ‘05 in the series’ first-ever visit to Kawartha Speedway

FRASERVILLE, ON – Jason Shaw became the first two-time winner on the 2005 Shouldice Stone ALSTAR Late Model Series tour when he led every lap of Friday night’s scheduled 75-lap feature race at Kawartha Speedway.
With the victory, the Guelph, ON racer added to his all-time ALSTAR wins record by collecting his 10th career Shouldice Series checkered flag. The Spira Fire Protection Ford driver started on the outside of the front row and exploded to the lead immediately after taking the initial green flag.
Once out front, Shaw was able to build solid leads and was smooth through traffic. Following each caution period, the former ALSTAR Series champ was able to pull quickly and safely away from his pursuers.
The result was a bit of a relief for Shaw, who has struggled since winning the season opener at Sauble on the May long weekend. Engine woes have plagued the #82 team in several subsequent outings, but there was no sign of trouble on this night as Shaw had the field covered right from the start. At times, the veteran stock car racer was able to put almost a full straightaway between himself and his nearest rival.
“That was a bit of a gimme tonight,” said Shaw in victory lane. “We had a good car tonight. It was good to get that monkey off ours backs.”
Finishing second to Shaw in the series’ first-ever visit to Kawartha Speedway was Glenn Watson of Barrie, ON in the racingracios.com Chevy. Watson started seventh in the 23-car field and mentioned, following the race, that engine trouble kept him from going after the win. “The car had a bit of a miss after halfway and it wasn’t real strong,” said Watson. “So I’m glad with this result.”
The race finished under caution as Shaw took the white flag that signaled the start of the last lap just moments before a spin by Craig Zurbrigg brought out the sixth caution flag of the event. As the field was preparing for a one-lap sprint to the finish, the rain that had delayed the start of the race by 40 minutes returned and the decision was made to throw the checkered flag after 74 laps.
The final podium position went to Tyler Williams, who overcame a mid-race spin en route to bringing his B&L Farm Services / Hank’s Auto Wreckers Ford home in third-place. “I had to work for it pretty hard,” said the Chesley, ON racer of the result. “It’s a great track; it’s the first time I’ve ever seen the place and I think I’d like to come back.”
Reigning Shouldice ALSTAR Series champ Robbie Thompson finished fourth to add to his points lead following the completion of the first half of the ’05 Shouldice ALSTAR schedule. In earlier heat race action at Kawartha Speedway, checkered flags went to Chris Morrow, Kyle Donaldson, Robbie Thompson and Glenn Watson. The next Shouldice ALSTAR Late Model Series race takes place on Saturday, July 16 at Sunset Speedway, just south of Barrie, Ontario.

July 4, 2005 - Barrie, ON - Driving the Central Merchant Services entry, rookie Tara MacLeod finished 12th in the CASCAR Super Series at Barrie Speedway, the feature event of the Canada Day Northern 500 Weekend at Barrie Speedway.

"It was a hard race," explained MacLeod after the race. "Barrie Speedway is a tight, tough little track and I'm happy with our finish in the Central Merchant Services Ford."

Mark Dilley won the Dodge Charger 300 presented by the Dodge Dealers of Ontario followed closely by Kerry Micks in second and D.J. Kennington in third.

"The car was really strong and by lap 54 we were able to move into first place."

"We had a good run going in the Tim Hortons - EMCEA Transport Chevrolet Monte Carlo," explained a disappointed Jeff Lapcevich after the race. "The car was really strong and by lap 54 we were able to move into first place and led for 25 laps before being wrecked. It's unfortunate, I really think we had a shot for a podium finish," added Lapcevich.

Mark Dilley won the Dodge Charger 300 presented by the Dodge Dealers of Ontario followed closely by Kerry Micks in second and D.J. Kennington in third.

"Jeff and I both were headed for a good finish, it's really unfortunate when you are dealt these hands by another competitor," said Jim Lapcevich. "The EMCEA Transport - Tim Hortons 25 car was running great in the top ten before all hell broke loose, but don't worry we'll be ready for Molson Indy next week."
Team Fastline drivers Jeff and Jim Lapcevich currently sit seventh and eleventh in the 2005 CASCAR Super Series Points Championship.

July 4, 2005, Barrie, ON - Kerry Micks, driving the PowerWater 2005 Micks Motorsports Ford, started on the pole at Barrie Speedway and finished in second position on the third-mile tri-oval on Sunday.

"The PowerWater Ford was great all day and we finished only one position from our ultimate goal for the weekend," stated Micks. "We were able to lead over 50 laps at the beginning of the race and got the lead back at the about the half way point after pit stops."

Mark Dilley won the Dodge Charger 300 presented by the Dodge Dealers of Ontario followed closely by Kerry Micks in second and D.J. Kennington in third.

"It was an extremely tricky race track with not much room to work. You had to be good in the lower groove and we were," smiled a happy Micks. "At the end the car was not running on all cylinders and we were having problems and didn't have enough to get by Mark (Dilley) for the win."

The next CASCAR Super Series race of the season, the Molson Indy will take place July 8-10 in Toronto on the 11-turn, 2.824 km street circuit.

Knowing that track position would be everything here, the Wyoming ON team owner had a disappointing qualifying time that placed him deep on the grid at 11th.

"Our #39 Avenue / NMT Dodge was a bit better in the early stages" said Whitlock who had moved to 7th by lap 20, to 4th by lap 40 and to 2nd behind Dilley by lap 80. The two Dodges ran together until both pitted at lap 131. Whitlock was not happy with the changes and again pitted on lap 170 with nine cars remaining on the lead lap. By lap 260 he had mustered 6th and moved to his finishing position during the final 10 laps. Only six cars finished on the lead lap.

"Racing the track itself and getting around the slower cars were the biggest challenges today. I think we went a bit too far with the changes we made during that stop but considering everything that we had to deal with today, a fifth is just fine. I’m sure that when the problems get fixed, we’ll see Barrie Speedway become a real fan favourite."

The surface of the newly configured track deteriorated badly causing two race stoppages to sweep debris. But what may soon be dubbed as CASCAR’s Bristol, the facility was pristine and efforts by track management will undoubtedly make this a popular future event. Pole-sitter Kerry Micks came home 2nd, DJ Kennington 3rd, and Don Thomson Jr. 4th - netting Dodge 3 of the top 5 spots.

Steckly qualifying on July 2 at Barrie Speedway

The CASCAR Super Series returned to the Barrie Speedway for the first time since 1995. Last year the speedway underwent a significant upgrade and was reconfigured into a 3/8 mile tri-oval.

On Saturday, July 2, the Super Series competitors had 2 practice sessions to gain knowledge of the track and to prepare for qualifying. Despite having only one days experience at the track, the 22 Racing team was able to qualify the Lewis Motor Sales/ Erb Group Pontiac Grand Prix in 8th position which was the best starting position for Scott Steckly so far in the 2005 season.

The Dodge Charger 300 went off on Sunday at 2:00 with perfect weather and packed grandstands. On the drop of the green flag, Scott seen his good starting position slip away as he was caught on the outside and lost 5 positions until he could drop down to the bottom grove. Running the lower line would be the story of the day at Barrie. It was a frustrating day for all the front runners as the slower traffic, running the inside line would hold up the faster cars. Scott was having his challenges moving up through the field, but a 2 tire pit stop during a caution at lap 125, gave Scott the edge he needed to make his move to the front. During the pit stop the team removed the hood of the car to alleviate an overheating problem with the car. When racing resumed Steckly was moving up through the field until CASCAR black flagged him, forcing Scott to return to the pits and re-install the hood. Apparently, CASCAR rules do not permit teams to remove your hood unless you have front end damage. Steckly was forced to pit under green flag racing to replace the hood and by the time he got back to racing he was 2 laps down to the leaders. Replacing the hood was short lived as shortly thereafter, as the short track racing took its toll, as the entire front end, hood and fenders were smashed off the #22 Lewis Motor Sales/ Erb Group Pontiac. In the end Steckly brought the car home in 8th place.

Next up in the CASCAR Super Series is the Toronto Molson Indy road course on July 9. http://www.molsonindy.com/toronto/index.php

Dilley wins inaugural Dodge Charger 300

Barrie, ON – Jul 03 2005: "What a dream day" said Barrie’s Mark Dilley after winning the CASCAR Super Series event during the Canada Day Northern 500 weekend at the newly reconfigured 1/3 mile tri-oval Barrie Speedway. "To win driving a Dodge Charger in the race sponsored by Dodge and the Ontario Dodge Dealers debuting the new production-version of the Charger, and to do all that at my home track in the first appearance here of the Super Series in ten years – it’s all just awesome" beamed Dilley.

But many will remember this event as a nightmare, including Dilley who told the fans from Victory Lane that track management would be doing whatever it takes to make this a premiere facility. The track itself, which may quickly be dubbed as CASCAR’s Bristol, deteriorated with the heat and the abuse of the two-day event and required repairs overnight. The race was stopped twice to sweep away debris in an effort to provide a surface the competitors could tolerate.

"That was like driving on ice," said Dilley, who qualified his #9 Dodge Power Water Charger third in the 22-car field. "Every turn felt like driving down a dry road and then hitting six inches of slush right when you want to turn. That started about lap 30. Once I saw what was going on, my whole plan was to stick to the bottom of the track and focus everything on bringing this Dodge home in one piece."

Dilley moved into 2nd on the third lap and took the lead briefly on lap 77. He regained the lead from laps 82 – 131 being closely followed by team mate Dave Whitlock who had moved up quickly from his 11th starting spot. Both pitted and Dilley worked his way back to the point for the final time at lap 251 being challenged many times by pole-sitter Kerry Micks. DJ Kennington finished 3rd, Don Thomson Jr. 4th, and Dave Whitlock 5th - netting Dodge 3 of the top 5 spots.

Don Thomson Jr. Posts Top-Five in Barrie – Leads Points Heading to T.O.

Courtesy Fitzpatrick Motorsports

(Barrie, Ontario) – Following an absence of almost 10 years to the day, Don Thomson Jr., and his Home Hardware Chevrolet Monte Carlo returned to the newly remodeled Barrie Speedway for the Dodge Charger 300. It was race number four of the 12-event CASCAR Super Series season and Thomson entered the weekend with a 27-marker lead in the point standings over Ron Beauchamp Jr., as Don chases his fifth consecutive National championship.

The weekend started with practice and Thomson was lurking near the top of the speed charts all day, with a fast lap of 14.387 seconds.

When the cars hit the track again, it was for real during pole qualifying and Don backed up his hot laps with the second fastest time of the session, lapping the 1/3rd-mile in 14.449 seconds, a mere 21/100ths of a second behind fast qualifier Kerry Micks. “Our car was good all day on Saturday. It’s going to be tough to pass here, so starting up front is so important.”

After getting caught on the high side when the green came out, Thomson slid back to third, but he was able to climb back into the runner-up spot before 25 laps were on the board. Shortly after that, Thomson was involved in a chain reaction, and the hood on his Home Hardware machine got crunched. “We had to come to pit road and fix the hood, because I couldn’t see. The track was really starting to come up as well, and make the outside lane useless, so we decided that track position was going to be everything. We took our two right side tires and were set for the day.”

The plan worked well as Thomson used a few passes, some attrition, and others visiting pit road over the next 100 laps to find his way to the front of the pack, taking the lead on lap 150. It looked like it could be the # 4 cars race to win as the laps wound down, but with D.J. Kennington, Mark Dilley, and Micks breathing down his neck, Thomson made a mistake trying to lap a car. He went to the outside, but couldn’t clear the car, and watched as Kennington darted underneath him on lap 208 to take the lead. Thomson would lose two spots late in the event to Dilley, and Micks, and wound up with a solid fourth-place finish.

“The big problem was all the marbles on the outside. As soon as you got out there it was like racing on ice. Our tires weren’t worn out at all, because you couldn’t get any grip with them. You just had to stay on the bottom, and we went to the top trying to lap a few cars, but it cost us. We’ll still take the weekend we had. We sat on the outside of the front row, led a few laps, and finished in the top-five. We still have the points lead, and we’re already looking forward to next weekend.”

Dilley held off a late charge by Micks to win his first feature of the season, while Kennington stood on the final step of the podium.

D.J. Kennington Finds Podium Again in Barrie

Courtesy D.J.K. Racing

(Barrie, Ontario) – Almost 10 years to the day, the CASCAR Super Series returned to the newly remodeled Barrie Speedway. D.J. Kennington and his Castrol Canada Dodge were looking to turn their season around following a disappointing run at Mosport, and climb back into championship contention.

The weekend started with practice for the Dodge Charger 300, and Kennington struggled to stay in the top-ten. “Our setup is off, and I think we have a lot of work to do before qualifying”

In time trails, the Castrol machine didn’t pick up at all, as Kennington recorded the 19th-fastest lap of the session. “We missed it today. We came with a different setup, because at this new track we thought it would work. We’re going to go back to our old setup for tomorrow and see what we can do.”

Sunday’s Dodge Charger 300 rolled off under sunshine and beautiful skies, with Kennington on the outside of the ninth row. Saturday’s action had started to tear the track up and despite a concrete patch job, Sunday wasn’t much better for the CASCAR Super Series racers.

“The track was tight to begin with, but as soon as the asphalt started to come up there was no upper groove. As soon as you tried to get someone on the outside in turn four you would slide right into the wall.”

D.J. figured that track position would be much more important than new tires and under yellow on lap 22 he came to pit road to top off the fuel tank on his Charger, giving up 13th-place in the running order. The plan worked as he climbed into the top-ten after restarting at the back. Kennington would come to pit road again just before the lap 106 red flag to sweep the marbles off the racetrack, and Kennington hoped it would be his final appearance of the day in his stall.

After restarting ninth, D.J. passed a few cars under green and gained a number more spots when the leaders pitted just after halfway. Kennington was third on a lap 160 restart, behind Don Thomson Jr., and Jim Lapcevich, but Lapcevich was hit by a lapped car, and D.J. slid into second position. On lap 208, Kennington took advantage of Thomson slipping up while trying to lap a car, and D.J. took the top spot away, opening up a two second cushion on second-place Mark Dilley before another late race yellow packed the field. Kenningon couldn’t hold off Dilley, as both he, and Kerry Micks got by, relegating the # 17 machine to a third-place finish.

“After all the cars that wrecked today, we’re just happy to have ours in once piece. We pitted early for tires, because I knew track position was going to be everything, but at the end, Dilley and Micks just had fresher rubber, and we were probably a third-place car. The car was so much better today than yesterday, and we took a shot at the win, but just didn’t get it."

With the finish Kennington jumped from 11th in the standings to eighth, just a single point behind Jeff Lapcevich, and 33 markers out of the top-five.

CASCAR: Toronto Indy Preview

LONDON, ON – This weekend, the CASCAR Super Series will make its seventh consecutive appearance as part of the Molson Indy Toronto race weekend. And for the first time ever, Canada’s top homegrown racing series will be part of the Sunday feature program at the temporary Exhibition Place street circuit.

All of CASCAR’s drivers and teams are looking forward to participating in the Toronto Indy; one of Canada’s top motorsports extravaganzas. But none is more keen to get the race underway than Jeff Lapcevich, who is looking to Sunday afternoon’s ATTO 100 Super Series race to provide an opportunity for redemption.

The Caistor Centre, ON racer won the 2003 and 2004 CASCAR Indy races on the streets of Toronto and was – until June 27 at Mosport Int’l Raceway – CASCAR’s unquestioned ‘king of the road racers’. But that changed when four-time National champ and current points leader Don Thomson (Home Hardware Chevy) edged Lapcevich en route to Mosport’s victory lane. The Fastline / Tim Hortons/ EMCEA Transport Chevrolet Monte Carlo driver is not taking the defeat lightly, to say the least.

“After being beaten at Mosport, we’ve been thinking about what we can do to prevent that from happening again,” said Lapcevich, as he prepared for the Toronto race. “We certainly haven’t taken that loss sitting down. We’re making considerable changes and we hope to pick up again right where we left off last year in Vancouver.”

In terms of specific changes his team has made in preparation for Toronto, Lapcevich doesn’t want to show his whole hand, but he said that his Fastline Motorsports team has acted to address some of the shortcomings that befell them at Mosport. “We worked on the horsepower because we were a little out-gunned at Mosport. We’re also doing some other things based on what we learned there. And I don’t think the big horsepower is as much of an advantage at the Toronto Indy as it is at Mosport. Toronto does have the big long straight, but it also has a lot more twisty sections, too. You need to be a little more graceful in Toronto and that suits our package a little better… I hope. Second is just no fun anymore.”

And if he needed any more incentive to do well in Toronto, Jeff Lapcevich is still smarting from last weekend’s Super Series race at Barrie where he led briefly before being caught up in an incident with a lapped car. “I was working pretty hard for an oval victory last weekend at Barrie, but it didn’t happen for us. That was a pretty big disappointment, so we’re looking to get that win back in Toronto.”

CASCAR has a half-hour practice session on Friday afternoon (starting at 4:45 p.m.), in advance Saturday’s lone qualifying session (6:00 p.m. – 6:45 p.m.) to set the starting grid for the 36-lap, 100 km chase. The ATTO 100 CASCAR race is scheduled to take the green flag at 4:25 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, following the ChampCar race.

CASCAR NOTEBOOK: Reigning CASCAR Western Series champ Kevin Dowler, driver of the EMCO Ford, swept both ends of the British Columbia doubleheader race weekend. On Saturday night, the Edmonton, AB racer won at Sun Valley Motor Speedway in Vernon. The next day, he completed the dream weekend by winning at Penticton Speedway (in Penticton, BC) after leading all but 14 laps of the 200-lap affair. Derek Polack came home in second place in both races… Three drivers are tied atop the leader board in terms of career CASCAR wins at the Molson Indy Toronto. Robin Buck, Kevin Dowler and Jeff Lapcevich each have two. Only Lapcevich is scheduled to compete in CASCAR’s seventh annual visit to the streets of Toronto.

FASTLINE MOTORSPORTS: Another top team looking for support

Yesterday afternoon, I spoke with Jeff Lapcevich in advance of his return to the Toronto Molson Indy. The Caistor Centre, ON resident is heading to the Toronto street circuit in search of his third consecutive T.O. Indy win.

Last week, I put out a call for help for another racer. At the time, I noted that there are many teams in many series who are actively looking for more sponsorship support for their racing programs and that we would do our best to help any of them who want it.

... and that brings me to Fastline Motorsports. Jeff and Jim Lapcevich are grateful for the support of their current sponsors: Tim Hortons, Day & Campbell, EMCEA Transport, Gates Canada, Mr. Lube, Source Cable & Wireless, Springer's Meats and Troy Cove Marine.

But Jeff said that the team is still in need of additional support if they're to complete the full Super Series National schedule. There are even sponsorship opportunities available on the car for this weekend's Toronto Indy. Given Jeff's track record at this event, this is a great opportunity for any company looking to get some guaranteed exposure.

Anyone wishing to discuss being on the #23 (Jeff) and/or #25 (Jim) CASCAR Super Series Chevies of the Lapcevich brothers should contact Jeff directly at: lapcevich23@hotmail.com or Bruce Mehlenbacher, the team's Director of Public Relations at: mehlenbacher@nas.net

Bob Brockington

This sad news was just forwarded to me by John Hopkins, who frequents the Canadian MotorSport History Group online forum.

Bob Brockington was a fixture at Mosport Int'l Raceway for decades. We at Inside Track had the pleasure of knowing him through the editorial contributions he made reporting on historic events at the track. Bob was a very nice man and we pass along our condolences to his family and friends.

Robert Brockington
It saddens me to report that Robert Brockington passed away this morning at home in Don Mills.
He visited us on Monday and was alert, cheerful and demonstrated his sense of humour as well as his thoughtful side. We were fortunate to see him together with his wife Yolanda, daughter Kelly and 3 month old grandaughter Reegan.
As some of you probably know, he has been ill for some time but never lost his passion for racing, cars and details.
We have no other information at this time but will do our best to keep you posted.

PETE SHEPHERD CHOSEN FOR ROUSH 'GONG SHOW'

Last night, CASCAR's 2004 Super Series Rookie of the Year Pete Shepherd found out that he has been invited to be the lone Canadian participant in the next version of Jack Roush's 'Gong Show' racer talent search.

From what I understand (and more details are to follow...), Petey will participate in a three-week competition featuring 25 up-and-coming stock car racers that will take place starting in early August at Concord, North Wilkesboro and Hickory Motor Speedway.

The popularity of Roush's 'Gong Shows' has grown to the point that the competition will be broadcast as a 'reality TV-style' show on Discovery Channel, and on Discovery Canada up here.

According to Petey's mom, Sharon, he will not miss any CASCAR races during production of the show.

Talk about great news! This is a great opportunity for a talented, nice kid to take a shot at reaching his dream.

Best of luck Petey!

Confident Bessette Heading to Toronto Indy

Courtesy Bessette Racing Team: Michel Poirier-Defoy:
(514) 942 – 8463

Molson Indy, Toronto, July 4. – Halfway into the season, Antoine Bessette is more than ever in the title chase for the 2005 Toyota Formula Atlantic championship after a string of top-five results and two podiums. The 23-year-old rookie driver wants to focus on his driving and trying to improve his skills in the #3 Unik Auto Design Car. He currently sits third in the series standings after six rounds of 12. He has, at times, looked like he could emerge as the top driver among a new breed of Atlantic road racing stars this season. He was also involved a few incidents that took valuable points away from him.

"I think we're still in good shape for winning the championship," Bessette said recently after completing back-to-back doubleheader weekends at Portland and Cleveland that left him trailing only series leader Charles Zwolsman and second-place driver Tonis Kasemets in the title chase. "With a little luck and getting the car a bit quicker and no mistakes, I think we can do it."

Bessette came out of the gates quickly in his first race for Polestar Racing Group. He led both rounds of qualifying at the season-opening race at Long Beach and paced the first 26 laps of the race before finishing a close second to teammate Katherine Legge. He returned to the podium this past weekend, finishing second behind Zwolsman in the second of two races at Cleveland's Burke Lakefront Airport.

In between his two podium visits, however, Bessette knows he performed well but also had some missteps. He spun early in Round 2 before finishing fourth in Mexico. He went off course in the first Portland race then made contact with another car in the second race as he brought home two fifth-place finishes. If he hopes to realize his championship dreams this season, Bessette knows he has to eliminate errors from his race-day performances.

"No more of that," said Bessette. "I will not do that again this year."

The native of St. Bruno, Quebec, located just outside of Montreal, will be the focus of more and more fans and media over the next weeks. The fact is three of the series' final six races will be run in Canada and that he's the top Canadian driver in a circuit that's become known for producing some of the country's biggest names in racing.

Aside from the added pressure of competing in his home country, however, Bessette is looking forward to upcoming races in Toronto, Edmonton and Montreal. "They are all really important events for me," he said. "If I'm going to win a race this year, for sure I want it to be in Canada. But I will keep pushing as hard as I can in every race. I just want to win."

Bessette thinks his best shot might come this coming weekend - the annual Molson Indy at Toronto's Exhibition Place street circuit. He earned his best North American Formula Renault Series finish of fourth place last year at Toronto and he also finished fourth at the venue in 2003 in the Barber Dodge Pro Series. He likes competing on street circuits and it's no coincidence that his first and only Atlantic pole position to date came on the street course in Long Beach.

"I like racing in Toronto and I like being in between the walls, like in Long Beach," said Bessette. "The street is bumpy (in Toronto) and there are a couple of corners I really like there, like Turn 1. I don't know why, but I'm not scared of the walls. I just don't see them - and hopefully they don't see me."

Third in the standings Bessette retains third place with 137 points behind Tonis Kasemets (162) and Charles Zwolsman (169). Polestar Racing Group heads north of the border to Toronto, Ontario for the Molson Indy, the first of three events in Canada. Next round of the 32nd season of the Toyota Formula Atlantic will take place on July 8 to 10 at Exhibition Place in downtown Toronto, a temporary 1,755-mile 11-turn temporary street course. Antoine Bessette will drive the Polestar Racing Group #3 UNIK Auto Design car.

You may visit Antoine Bessette's web site at www.bessetteracing.com and the series at www.toyotaatlantic.com.

BROWN-OUT AT BARRIE SPEEDWAY: FOILS STRONG RUN BY NAPA/AUTOPRO TEAM

Release Prepared By: Ken Spencer, Marketing and Media Relations, Brown Auto Racing

July 4, 2005 - If one didn’t know better, one would suspect Doug Brown was getting his electrical power from Hydro One. One minute everything was generating just fine in his NAPA/Autopro Monte Carlo, then without warning, the car suddenly shut down following a restart that left him stranded on the track and forcing a caution flag.

The incident happened twice during the running of the “Dodge Charger 300” at the recently reconfigured Barrie Speedway and forced the team to take a five-lap penalty for repairs under red flag conditions well past the half way point in the marathon 300-lap event. A faulty battery was the suspected problem.

“The car just quit”, Doug shouted through his radio when the car shut down following a restart. He was in a strong running position at the time of the problem. The car re-fired in the pits during the caution break but the delay cost him a couple of laps in the running order. It redeveloped several laps later under similar circumstances.

At the mid point in the contest Doug had worked his way up to third place and appeared to have a strong contending car using a timely pit stop and taking advantage of the pit stops of others to work his way forward from his 14th starting position in the 22 car field.

“The car was definitely hooked up today’’ the sweat drenched driver remarked following the race. “We were capable of at least a seventh-place finish and possibly better had we not had that battery problem.”

For many, the cars they loaded on their haulers at the end of the Canada Day weekend bore little resemblance to the immaculate machines that lined the front stretch for the pre-race autograph/photo sessions. Most went home minus hoods, front fenders and an assortment of rear clip and quarter panel damages that resulted from skirmishes with lapped cars or from battles with the deteriorating track conditions. The #10 car was among the victims who will have extensive repairs to perform before their next oval track outing.

It took 12 caution periods (totalling 83 laps) - including two mandated by Series’ officials for track maintenance- to complete the entertaining event.

Despite the results appearing on team monitors at the end of the day that showed the #10 car in the tenth finishing position, unofficial results placed the car thirteenth. The team has subsequently filed an appeal with CASCAR to review the final results.

Local favourite Mark Dilley of Barrie, driving the Dodge/Mobil One/ Power Water Dodge Charger outdistanced Kerry Micks of Mt. Albert (Power Water Ford Taurus) and D.J. Kennington of St. Thomas (Castrol; Dodge) to claim the victory. Defending Super series Champion Don Thomson of Hamilton in a Chev and Dave Whitlock of Wyoming rounded out the top five positions.

Doug Brown and the rest of the CASCAR Super Series teams now head to Toronto’s lakefront for this weekend‘s Molson Indy extravaganza where they will play a major support role in the special week long racing and off track activities.

Toronto Star story on former Sunset racer who is now blind and works with others

Yesterday's Toronto Star had a very nice piece on Jay Phinnemore. Anyone who has followed racing in Ontario knows about the Phinnemore racing clan.

Jay Phinnemore lost his sight to Type 1 Diabetes, but he hasn't allowed that to slow him down. Good for him and to the Star for this excellent story.

SHOULDICE ALSTAR: Delisle set to return at Kawartha

WINDSOR, ON – Shouldice ALSTAR Series rookie Dan Delisle driver of the #1 KFC/CharterHouse Printing Chevrolet has been cleared by his physician to return to action this weekend at Kawartha Speedway. Delisle has been sidelined since early June because of a work related injury.

“I feel great and very anxious to strap back in this weekend at Kawartha. It’s been very difficult to sit back each week and see the Shouldice Stone Alstar results come in and my name not be anywhere on that page.”

“We’re ready for Kawartha. It looks like an awesome track, and the crew has done their homework. With only 7 races remaining winning the championship may not be in the cards but we are gonna win a few.”

The Shouldice Stone Alstar Series resumes racing this Friday night at Kawartha Speedway.

TRANS-AM: POINTS LEADER RUHLMAN LOOKS FOR REPEAT PODIUM FINISH AT MOLSON INDY TORONTO

Courtesy Derhaag Motorsports

TORONTO (July 5, 2005)--After scoring his second win of the season in a dramatic come from the back finish at the Cleveland Grand Prix, Randy Ruhlman is looking forward to racing the #49 Preformed Line Products Canada Corvette this weekend at the Molson Indy Toronto in Round 4 of the 2005 Trans-Am Series.

The current Driver's Championship point’s leader, Ruhlman will be making his 150th start in Trans-Am, having scored two wins and a second in the first three Rounds of 2005 competition. Ruhlman hopes to continue that streak in Toronto, and feels he has some unfinished business at the track at Exhibition Place.

Ruhlman says, "We've run some great races so far this year against the Jags and Fords, and I have a great team to thank for giving me a winning car. I am still really hungry for a win at Toronto, though. We fell a bit short last year, when Ron [Fellows] and I finished just off of the win. So coming back this year, I feel good about our chances. I've been coming to Toronto since 1988 in the Corvette Challenge. I love this track and the fans are some of the most supportive and knowledgeable in the sport." Ruhlman scored a second place finish here last year, where along with teammate Canadian driver Ron Fellows, they made it a two-three podium finish for the Corvettes.

Not only will Ruhlman be fighting the Jaguars again, but he will have an additional 25 pounds of "reward weight" added to his Corvette. This weight (a 25-pound penalty for each win), plus that for the Long Beach win, puts the #49 car at a 150-pound weight disadvantage against the AJ V8 of Gentilozzi, and 125 pounds heavier than Portland winner Klaus Graf.

Braking, acceleration and tire wear are the major issues with weight and are especially critical at a fast and tight track like Toronto. With a significantly heavier car, Ruhlman will be forced once again to call on his ability to drive a fast, steady pace and his skill at keeping the car and tires in good shape for the final dash to the checkered flag. Ruhlman has continued to be very fast in the Corvette, setting a new track record at Portland with the fastest race lap, and, while driving to a 16 second winning margin at Cleveland, he missed the fast lap of Klaus Graf in the Jaguar by thousandths.

Ruhlman drives the #49 blue and white PLP Corvette, sponsored in Canada by Toronto area, Preformed Line Products Canada.

This year, Ruhlman is joined on the Derhaag Motorsports team by Calgary native and rookie contender Hima Maher. The two drivers will be talking to the media at the trackside pre-race press conference on Thursday, July 7th.

The Toronto Trans-Am race will be held on Saturday, July 9th at Exhibition Place in downtown Toronto. The 100-mile race of 57 laps will be run at 3 PM EDT. Television coverage will be Sunday, July 17th at 12:30 EDT. The Toronto race is one of three Canadian races for Trans-Am in the 2005 season. The series travels to Edmonton, Alberta next week, and ends the season at the Molson Indy at Montreal.
Alright F1 fans…most of us ‘lifers’ know that the behind-the-scenes wrangling is often more interesting than the racing itself. So it comes as no surprise that the proposed F1 regulations for 2008 were introduced shortly before the Indy race, allowing enough time for the two youngest members on staff to produce a point/counterpoint. I, for one…am firmly against the proposed regulations.

The purpose of the new regs is to keep costs in check. Well guess what – they won’t. Instead of manufacturers being able to spread out their budgets over a wide range of departments (chassis, aero, engine, etc.), the workforce will be concentrated on refining the most minute part of the car’s package. This will force teams to do more development for far less achievable performance gains.

James Neilson (JN) and Michael Banovsky (MB) report.

ENGINES
“All components of the engine will be controlled by an Electronic Control Unit (ECU) which has been manufactured by an FIA designated supplier to an agreed specification.”
MB: Bad – Think “fuel rig” on this one. The FIA isn’t capable of contracting a company to supply a fuel rig that doesn’t malfunction, let alone a complex ECU.
JN: Good – Fuel rig? They don’t work because teams like Benetton modified them outside of FIA regulations. Remember Jos Verstappen and the inferno that obscured his stricken Benetton in 1994? I’m sure a company like Magnetti Marelli, who currently provide ECU’s to Ferrari, could provide a standard ECU to all teams.

“The ECU may only be used with FIA-approved software and may only be connected to the control system wiring loom, sensors and actuators as specified by the FIA.”
MB: Bad – So what if there’s a faulty sensor and the car fails during a race? Does the FIA lose constructor’s points? Of course not. And what will be the cost to each team for this technology and the software to use it?
JN:
Good
– Cost is always an issue but cost debates always revolve around some teams having more money than others. If the software is provided to teams at the same price what’s the problem with standard electronics?

“A 3 litre V10 engine will remain an option for teams unable to obtain a 2.4 litre V8, but subject to similar strict performance limitations as in 2006 and 2007.”
MB: Bad – Don’t worry, the new 2.4L V8s will be up to today’s performance levels in two years. So it would be a farce to allow teams to use V10 engines in 2008, considering their increased longevity through the increased displacement. I say engine regs should allow for more creativity. Cap the displacement at 4L, and produce a rev limit for any combination of V6-V16 engines at that displacement. This would allow, say, a 3L V8 limited to 18,000 RPM to compete alongside a 4L V12 at 9,000 RPM.
JN: Good – Longevity is irrelevant as the 2.4 litre V8 will be designed to make it through two races. If a V10 could last longer, say four races, it will most likely still be changed after two as the rules allow you to do that. Development will inevitably cease on the V10 and any advantage that configuration might have initially will be nixed by the crappy chassis, think Minardi, it will be strapped to.

GEARBOXES
“All cars will be fitted with gear ratios, final drive ratios and differentials that have been manufactured by an FIA designated supplier to an agreed specification.”
MB: Bad – Is there one gearset allowed for a season? What is the maximum number of parts allowed to be purchased by teams? What are the fatigue levels for each component (how long will the gears last)? And who agrees to this specification?
JN: Good – Gearboxes are one of the most expensive items on a car to develop and maintain. Considering the money BAR spent this season on their “seamless shift” transmission and the resultant embarrassing performance, it’s obvious that money could have been spent elsewhere, like giving David Richards an offer to return he couldn’t have refused.

“Gear changing will only be permitted by the use of a manually operated mechanical linkage to the gearbox.”
MB: Good – This should help drivers shake the in-car image of being robots.
JN: Good – I Still remember watching poor Ukyo Katayama clang through the gears and dance the two-step in the footwell of his anemic Tyrrell at the ’94 Japanese Grand Prix. Bring that back! Please!

“Clutches will only be operated via a foot pedal connected mechanically to a release mechanism.”
MB: Bad – I firmly believe that F1 technology should precede technology available to the consumer, not follow it. So, in the world of SMG and DSG, where is the link between F1 and available technology? At the very most, limit clutch use to the start of the grand prix and pit stops.
JN: Undecided – I’m still trying to figure out where the teams would fit a third pedal in a modern Formula 1 Car.

BODYWORK
“Downforce will be reduced to approximately 10% of current levels.”
MB: Bad – The trick here is to increase the overtaking, but to reduce the tendency for the cars to slide. When a car slides, it puts drivers/spectators/track workers at more of a risk from out-of-control vehicles. Also, without the downforce, how will high-speed component/tire failures be controlled? And how will the cars stay on the ground after tire-to-tire contact?
JN: Good – Cars should be less dependant on their aerodynamics in a bid to increase overtaking but to 10%? That’s a little extreme. Reduce the drag, reduce the resultant turbulence that renders the aerodynamics of a following car ineffective, increase the mechanical grip, but don’t just cut downforce. For the ‘95 season they did that, the cars went faster, when they raised the height of the front wing, the cars went faster, when they changed the rules for this year the cars inevitably caught up. Is the FIA ignorant? Oops, silly question.

“Drag will be maintained at current levels.”
MB: Bad – Less downforce with current drag levels will produce ugly looking cars, as most of the drag currently is created by the wings and tires. If a major source of drag is at 10% of current levels, something will have to be added to put the two back into balance. Bumpers?
JN: Bad – Can anyone explain to me how the FIA intends to do this? I shiver at the thought of how big a gurney flap you need to pull this rule off!

“Overall car width will be increased.”
MB: Bad – This is bad only because it isn’t clear where the width will come from, and by how much. Increasing width will allow for lower, more tightly-packed sidepods that should make the cars look better. Or like old Indycars.
JN: Good – Assuming they increase the width of the cars by moving the wheels out farther, and back to pre-1998 configuration, I’m all for it.

“By stipulating maximum and minimum dimensions cars will be “cleaned up” with devices such as barge boards, flip ups, winglets and other small add on parts removed.”
MB: Bad – If an engineer is told he can’t put winglets on a car, he will instinctively try to find other ways to make up for the lost downforce. And if the team has a big budget and wants to win, instead of developing a wide array of test parts (different barge boards, wings, flip-ups, etc.), they will concentrate their resources on the bigger components: the nose cone, airbox, sidepods, etc. to make up for the lost performance. This will increase manufacturing costs as the components will be larger and more complex to manufacture.
JN: Good – Engineering costs will go down, despite my associate’s claims. The development costs for some of these parts are staggering. And how many times have we seen an F1 car lose a bargeboard and continue on like nothing happened? Besides if there were untapped development potential in areas such as the Airbox and Nose-cone teams would have been all over that by now. In fact, teams are all over it already. Williams ran their bizarre front wing with “tusks” last season. Mclaren have their novel “canards” on this year’s MP4-20. I also think they would look a hell of a lot better devoid of all those incongruous appendages.

“Total advertising area on the car to remain unchanged.”
MB: Good – Who cares, anyway? Just paint the cars in the colour of the manufacturer’s home country and post a website on the side of the car that lists the sponsors.
JN: Good – Remember when they wanted to ditch airboxes in ’94? Every team cried about losing ad space they had already sold. I say keep them, F1 teams whine enough as it is. We don’t really need to give them another reason as they will surely find one themselves

WHEELS AND TYRES
“Tyres will be supplied by one manufacturer appointed by the FIA after an invitation to tender. Such an appointment will be conditional upon.”
MB: Good – Do I have to explain why?
JN: Good – See above, US GP, cough, cough.

“Slick tyres will be introduced for use in dry weather.”
MB: Bad – At first I was against grooves, but I think there needs to be a link between F1 and top-level road cars. Keep grooves, and introduce a more aggressive tread.
JN: Good – Mechanical grip should be increased, slick tyres is one easy way. Bring on the overtaking!

“Lower profile tyres will be introduced.”
MB: Good – Again, this would allow for a link between road and race cars.
JN: Who cares really?

“Significantly larger wheels with minimum and maximum sizes stipulated for front and rear will be permitted.”
MB: Good – So staggered wheels, and optimized sizes for each track, eh? (Smaller sizes for faster tracks, larger for high-grip tracks like Austria.) But just how will one supplier keep up with all of the different sizes? And does “significantly” allow for future cars to roll on 24-inch dubs?
JN: Good – It makes the technical package more fluid and we’ll get to see some interesting tyre configurations throughout the season.

“Tyre blankets and other heating devices will be prohibited.”
MB: Good – This will put more emphasis on the start and restarts.
JN: Good – I’m all for placing more emphasis on a driver’s car control ability. Plus I’m sure F1 teams have found a way to over-engineer and pay a fortune for what is essentially a space heater.

CHASSIS
“The minimum height of the centre of gravity of the chassis will be specified.”
MB: Good – But really – this will just allow teams to concentrate the majority of the component weight at the minimum allowed.
JN: Irrelevant – Like MB said, teams are just going to lower the car’s centre for gravity to within acceptable limits anyways.

“The minimum weight for a chassis will be specified.”
MB: Good
JN: Good

“Energy of all impact tests will be increased.”
MB: Good
JN: Good

“Loads for all static tests will be increased.”
MB: Good
JN: Good

“Side intrusion test requirements will be increased.”
MB: Good
JN: Good

“Ballast will be reduced to minimal levels.”
MB: Bad – Without ballast, how will teams keep weight at the corners? They will spend more money on things like the floor of the car and sidepods and mould ‘heavy spots’ into the composite component. This will create a need for track-specific floors and sidepods, as well as increased replacement cost per component.
JN: Good – I’m sure all those genius designers in F1 can build a car to legal weight without ballast right? Aside from Geoff Willis of BAR of course.

BRAKES
“All cars will be fitted with brake discs, pads and calipers which have been manufactured by an FIA designated supplier to an agreed specification.”
MB: Good – This will allow for differences between drivers to show through, like Sato’s brake wear vs. M. Schumacher’s. However, the design of said components can be fixed, but the teams should be allowed to manufacture the components in-house to allow for tighter quality control.
JN: Good – Like BAR’s seamless transmission, Ferrari have spent a fortune developing trick brakes for this season and the performance benefit is indistinguishable.

DATA ACQUISITION AND TELEMETRY
“With specific exceptions, any data acquisition system, telemetry system or associated sensors additional to those associated with the ECU will be physically separate and completely isolated from the control electronics.”
MB: Good – Keep it simple. This will also allow fans to see where the cars are on track.
JN: Good – Like MB said it could open this information up to the general public.

“Pit to car telemetry will be prohibited.”
MB: Good – Telemetry is different from radio, of course. Drivers should focus on driving only.
JN: Good – see above

MATERIALS
“Limitations, similar to those within the 2006 engine regulations, will be imposed on all parts of the car.”
MB: Bad – What about Britain’s advanced composite manufacturing industry? Most people don’t know that F1 is the breeding ground for advanced material production. If the F1 doesn’t develop things like carbon fibre, who will?
JN: Good – Those exotic materials in the engine are unnecessary and at times dangerous. Remember the beryllium components in the Mercedes Engines of a few years ago? The vapors caused by the worn parts were poisonous to breathe.

STARTER
“All cars will be equipped with a driver operated starter which is capable of starting the car without outside assistance a minimum number of times.”
MB: Good – This will prevent M. Schumacher from waving marshals across the track.
JN: Good – This gives a chance for a driver that has spun and stalled to get going, and most importantly off the racing line, much quicker which will increase safety and decrease race stoppages.

SPARE CARS
“Spare cars will be prohibited, i.e. no team may have more than two built-up cars available at an Event at any one time. Spare chassis will be permitted but precisely what constitutes a car in this context will be clearly defined.”
MB: Bad – In the event of an accident, more money will be spent on flying additional needed components to the track, possibly requiring damaged cars to sit out whole sessions at the expense of spectators.
JN: Bad – The third car is a good rule. Sooner or later a driver is going to wreck his car. He shouldn’t be handicapped for taking chances because that’s what we all want to see right?

TESTING
“Testing will be limited to 30000km per team between 1st January and 31st December, subject to a single tyre supplier being appointed.”
MB: Good – Teams will be able to spend vast sums of money on testing (by having more personnel at the track to maximize data acquisition/testing analysis and computer simulation software.) Oh, and wind tunnel time.
JN: Good – Cutting costs and decreasing the divide between the haves and the have-nots is good for F1 in the long run.

CAR ACQUISITION
“Teams will be free to buy a complete car or any part of a car from another constructor.”
MB: Good – It will be nice to see Lola and Dallara (back) in F1.
JN: Good – Bring back the days of March! Frank Williams wouldn’t be in F1 if he didn’t have that choice while running Piers Courage.

George: Reunification talks going nowhere.

Good news for a Canadian race at the end of this post.

George: Reunification talks going nowhere.

TSN.ca Staff

Indy Racing League boss Tony George says don't look for an end to the
open-wheel split for 2006 - or anytime after that for that matter.
George tells the Indianapolis Star that the window of opportunity to bring
the two rival factions together is slowly closing shut, likely for good.
"I don't think (reconciliation) is possible for 2006," George said over the
weekend. "I don't think it's possible ever."
George says he offered Champ Car owners a set of compromises in a letter
just prior to the U.S. Grand Prix but that the rival series' desire to share
ownership of the IRL was the primary stumbling block.
While he would not say if talks are continuing, he indicated that he had
heard back "indirectly" from the other side.

George's desire to give up any kind of control in any kind of partnership
with Champ Car has long been mentioned as a problem to reconciliation.
George points to last month's U.S. Grand Prix fiasco as the primary reason
behind his desire to retain control.
The IRL is expected to unveil its 2006 schedule within a month, hence the
reason why the two sides likely won't get together in time for next year.
It's believed the IRL will make its first appearance in Canada next year
Quebec City slated to hold a street race.
Champ Car officials are also putting the final touches on their 2006 schedule
as well.

Not racing, but....

Hi everyone,

At the risk of lowering (ha!) the level of journalism on this blog, I wanted to make a personal post regarding my family.

I have so many great friends in the racing community and a lot of people know that my wife, Melody, and I have been going through the process of adopting a child for the past year. This past weekend, we had some great news.

On Friday afternoon (Canada Day), Taylor Joy MacPherson was born at Humber River Hospital. Melody was in the room with the birth-mother the whole time. On Saturday afternoon, after being checked out, Taylor came home with us.

We're getting her just over four years after Melody received a bone marrow transplant from her brother to get rid of her Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. We can't believe how lucky we are in so many ways. Everyone is doing very well, although somewhat sleep deprived.

Thanks to everyone for all of their good wishes over the past while. Again, we have so many great friends in racing and we'd promised to let everyone know as soon as we had any news... and this was the best way to do it.

Greg.

NORMAN The new “King of Michigan”

“I’ve tried to get this one a lot of times but could never finish it off”

stated Tim Norman as he exited his car following a dominating performance in the Engine Pro, Sprints On Dirt presented by Total Seal series 7th Annual “King of Michigan” at Hartford Speedway Park Friday night, July 1. While being joined in victory lane by car owner Joe Gaerte and his crew, the Warsaw, Indiana veteran was “on a rail “all night capturing his heat race, the first dash, and the thirty lap “A” Main event sponsored by his company, XYZ Machining in the MOPAR powered J&J.

Twenty four cars lined up for the start of the 30 lap “A” Main with Norman and Ben Rutan setting the pace. At the drop of the green flag, Norman and Rutan stormed into the first turn side by side. Exiting turn two, Norman squeaked out an early lead but Rutan fought back and lead at the conclusion of lap one. Norman once again grabbed the lead coming out of turn two and took command of the point for the remainder of the event.

The race for position was furious throughout the pack but up-front it was Rutan settling into the second position with J.R. Stewart and Dain Naida doing battle for third and fourth. Changing positions at each end of the track, Naida and Stewart put on one of the most ferociously contested on-track battles of the season through the first twelve laps. When the first caution flew at lap twelve for a spin in turn four involving Tim Hunter, Tim Allison had quietly moved into fifth spot.

The restart found Norman again moving out front quickly as Rutan maintained his hold on second. Naida was able to get away from Stewart and began to challenge Rutan for the runner-up spot as Norman stretched out his lead. As the field moved past the half way portion of the race, Allison overtook both Stewart and then Naida while moving into third. The “Hoosier Rocket”, Brett Mann continued to make a charge to the front from his eighteenth starting spot to move into fourth on lap sixteen.

Caution flew for the second time on lap twenty-three as the right rear tire on the Sean Robinson machine gave way and came to rest in turn two. The restart would line up with Norman up front followed by Rutan, Mann who was now third, Allison and Naida. Caleb Griffith, Nick Mulheim, Bill Johnson, Kyle Patrick, and Gary Fast rounded out the top ten.

With the green waving, Norman once again opened up a substantial lead as he pulled away. It was Allison who made a charge to try to move to the front as he overtook Mann and Rutan in turn one. Mann followed by Rutan then quickly disposed of Allison as he set his sights on the leader.

Caution waved for the last time as the white flag was displayed for Ryan Grubaugh as his machine stopped on the racing surface. The track was cleared quickly, setting up for a “green – white – checker” finish to determine the “King of Michigan”.

With the green being displayed Norman was not to be denied as he claimed the crown. Brett Mann held on for second over Allison, Caleb Griffith, and Dain Naida. Gary Fast finished sixth with Kyle Patrick seventh after needing a provisional to get in the race, Rutan slipped to eight, Mulheim and Bill Johnson rounded out the top ten.

SOD moves on to Mike Mouch’s I-96 Speedway next Friday night, July 8 for a tune-up for the “Full Throttle Nationals” scheduled at the half mile facility on August 19 & 20. Then it is on to Owendale Speedway July 9 for the only visit to the tight quarter mile on Michigan’s thumb.

CHALLENGER MOTOR FREIGHT/LOGEL'S AUTO PARTS DODGE SLIDE TO SEVENTH

July 3, 2005. Brad Graham and the Challenger Motor Freight/Logel's auto parts Charger team were excited about the possibilities at round four of the CASCAR Super Series at Barrie Speedway. The Dodge Charger 300 presented by the Ontario Dodge Dealers marked the return to Barrie for CASCAR and Graham had a fast car to work with.

Sixth would seem like a good qualifying effort but it actually left the driver a little disappointed. "I just tried a little too hard on the second lap and it got away from me" said Graham afterwards". Track position would be hard to hold onto during the race as well.

From the drop of the green flag to the end of the contest Barrie Speedway proved to be a one groove race track. "Every time I got up even just a little bit from the bottom, the car would slide like it was on ice" reflected Graham. "And with that set of circumstances cars are going to get into each other". That they did. Even during one of the 12 caution periods during the race. There was contact between the Challenger Motor Freight/Logel's Auto Parts Dodge and another competitor.

Yet with this difficult set of circumstances and what was at the end of 300 laps a very torn up race car, Brad Graham was able to take the checkered flag and a seventh place finish, his third top-ten of the season. "We keep improving a little bit each week and that gives me a lot of confidence for the rest of the season, I really like the direction we're moving in " said the driver afterwards.

The CASCAR Super Series resumes competition on the temporary street circuit as part of the Toronto Molson Indy weekend. CASCAR Super Series competitors have consistently shown to be one of the highlight races of the weekend and this year should be no different.

The CASCAR Super Series is Canada's only sanctioned National touring stock car racing series competing from coast to coast. CASCAR stages events at the most famous oval tracks in Canada such as Cayuga Speedway and Delaware Speedway and also competes on the temporary street circuit at the Molson Indy Toronto.

RON BEAUCHAMP JR A VICTIM OF CIRCUMSTANCES IN BARRIE

July 4, 2005. The Mopar Parts team was off to a great start on the Canada Day weekend. Preparing to compete in round four of the CASCAR Super Series at Barrie Speedway, the #60 team was the winner of the pit stop competition in downtown Barrie on Friday night. Little did they know how hard the crew would be forced to work during the race.

After a disappointing qualifying run the Mopar Part team went to work and found the stagger to be well off the optimum setting and made quick adjustments for the race. Relegated to a 21st starting spot in the Dodge Charger 300 presented by the Ontario Dodge Dealers the team hoped to stay out of trouble early and use the Mopar power under the hood to get to the front.

In the early going Ron Beauchamp Jr. would gain several spots but with the asphalt coming apart Barrie Speedway was proving to be a one groove race track. While trying to move around slower cars Beauchamp slid sideways and crashed heavily, forcing the team behind the pit wall for extensive repairs to the Mopar Dodge. "Anytime you go to the outside, you had no control and just slid" said the disappointed driver afterwards. "We had a fast car, I just didn't get a chance to use it" he concluded.

The Mopar Parts Charger was actually the fastest car on the day. For the second time this season Ron Beauchamp Jr. claimed the Fastest Lap of the race award and the $1,500 cash prize with it.

Teams will return to action this coming weekend on the temporary street circuit as one of the main attractions at the Toronto Molson Indy weekend. Practice begins on Friday and the race takes place Sunday afternoon.

The CASCAR Super Series is the only National Stock Car Racing series with events scheduled this year at famed oval tracks including Delaware Speedway & Cayuga Speedway along with road courses and temporary street circuits like the Toronto Indy. BRYAN CATHCART DISAPPOINTED WITH RESULTS IN BARRIE

July 4, 2005. Bryan Cathcart and the Meyers Transport/Peterborough Homes/Parkview Homes team had their hands full along with the rest of the CASCAR Super Series competitors at round four of the season, The Dodge Charger 300 presented by the Dodge Dealers of Ontario.

Frustration began with qualifying when as the driver said "I just got a little excited and overdrove the car; we should have been starting in the top ten". Instead the Meyers Transport/Peterborough Homes/Parkview Homes Dodge would start 19th. Staying out of trouble would be the key early in the race.

As the green flag dropped it was apparent the newly reconfigured Barrie Speedway was a one groove race track, making passing extremely difficult. "We were doing alright for the first few laps but during our first pit stop I made another mistake" said Cathcart.

Caught speeding on pit road, Bryan was handed a stop and go penalty. "That really put us behind and made for a difficult afternoon" surmised the driver.

With only one groove working and the track coming apart it made for a long caution filled race. "I was trying to be considerate, but when I moved up to allow a fast car through, sometimes they'd run me hard into the corner, tempers were pretty short" stated the driver.

Even with so many factors working against them Bryan Cathcart and the Meyers Transport/Peterborough Homes/Parkview Homes Dodge would gain eight positions and come home with an 11th place finish. "Considering everything that happened during this race, just missing the top ten is pretty good" stated Cathcart.

CASCAR teams are back in action right away at this coming weekend at the Toronto Molson Indy. The CASCAR Super Series competitors have always shown to be one of the best races of the weekend on the temporary street circuit since they began competing their in 1999.

The CASCAR Super Series is the only National Touring Series of Stock Car Racing in Canada. All CASCAR Super Series Races can be seen on Rogers Sportsnet and SPEED TV. For more information and to follow the progress of Bryan Cathcart and the CASCAR Super Series log onto www.cascar.ca.

SEAN STAFFORD AND THE LE WALKER CHEVY SUFFER THROUGH A LONG AFTERNOON IN BARRIE

July 4, 2005. Sean Stafford and the #42 LE Walker Transport Chevrolet team got off to a strong start for round number four of the CASCAR Super Series at Barrie Speedway on the Canada Day Long weekend.

The crew had prepared a strong car, and Stafford was able to maneuver the LE Walker Chevrolet into the 10th starting spot, a good effort. "The car felt pretty good right away and we were just hoping to follow along at the start and then see how things played out" said the driver afterwards. "Too bad it didn't work out that way."

Stafford would be forced to make a pit stop during the first caution period of the 300 lap event as the temperature was hitting 260 degrees. The team tried to cool the engine, but the stop put Sean and the LE Walker Chevy back in the heavy traffic, and the line of fire.

With the asphalt surface coming breaking apart all weekend, Barrie Speedway was a one groove track and even the slightest variation of the racing line would cause the car to slide. Sean was involved in contact with others and the crew removed plenty of fiberglass body work.

Even with all of the circumstances working against the LE Walker team, they had a fast race car. "When we were ahead of Mark Dilley (the eventual race winner) and away from the traffic we were just as fast as he was" said Stafford. "I had no problem staying ahead of him after a restart".

However the 300 lap main event would conclude with a torn up race car and the LE Walker Chevrolet team credited with an 18th place finish. "After looking so good it went away quickly" said Sean after the race. "It's too bad it really can be a fun track to drive, but not today".

During the race veteran LE Walker team member and tire changer Adam Smith of Ancaster was injured, suffering burns to his right hand while trying to make repairs. He is resting at McMaster Medical Centre in Hamilton and while he is uncomfortable, the prognosis is optimistic and Smith hopes to be back with the team soon.

Next up for the CASCAR Super Series competitors will return to road racing as one of the top attractions as part of the Toronto Molson Indy weekend. This temporary street circuit has been the sight of great CASCAR racing every year since 1999.

TEAM 3 RED GRABS TOP TEN FINISH

By: Jamie HakonsonTeam 3 Red

July 3, 2005- Barrie, Ontario- Team 3 Red worked their way through a trying weekend earning a well deserved 10th place finish at the Dodge Charger 300 this weekend at Barrie Speedway.

As the Teams took to the newly configured racetrack on Sunday morning, it was quite apparent that it was a one groove race track and passing would be tough. The Team qualified in the 15th starting spot in the tight field and the name of the game for the grueling 300 laps was to stay out of trouble and be there at the end of the race.

As the green flag fell, drivers jostled around to find their spots on the track and Team 3 Red driver Stu Robinson Jr. picked up 2 spots on his first lap. When the first caution flag flew on lap 36 the #3 Snap-on Tools machine was running 11th. The team took a temporary set back when they had to come into the pits for a stop and go penalty, but quickly set back into their rhythm working their way back up to 19th. As the laps clicked away, lapped traffic became an issue and Robinson Jr. avoided multiple accidents, keeping the car straight and in contention.

The first of two competition yellow flags came out on lap 105 in which all of the cars were brought to pit road while track officials swept the track. By the half way point of the long 300 lap race, Robinson Jr. was running 15th. Fighting a tight race car and a track that was coming apart in the corners, the Team worked together and kept their pace going. The best battle of the day came on lap 273 as Robinson Jr. made the pass to take the Team to their 10th place finish on the inside of the #10 along the back stretch and into corner 3.

"This is one interesting race track!" exclaimed Stu Robinson Jr. as he climbed out of his #3 Snap-on Tools Dodge. "If you were on the outside at this track you were freight-trained for sure. It was tough, but the Team worked hard and my spotter Mike Wagner helped me all day long! 10th place feels great and we will take it!

Crew Chief Duane Swinkels was proud of the Team "Our Team focused on the big picture today and that was to keep the car in one piece and be there in the end. 10th place feels great and this team worked really hard for it! Stu drove an awesome race!"

The Team is right back into action this week as they take their road course car out for its second and final outing of the year at the Molson Indy Toronto this weekend. The Team will qualify their car on Saturday evening on the 1.72 mile asphalt city street road course and run their main event on Sunday at 4:25 pm.

You can catch Team 3 Red in the BERMS-R-US presents the Clarington 200 from the road course at Mosport International Speedway on Wednesday July 6 at 2pm EST on

Antoine L'Estage wins the Baie-des-Chaleurs Rally

Toronto’s Peter Thomson finishes 4th

New Richmond (Quebec), July 3, 2005 - Quebec rally driver Antoine L'Estage (96) who has been fairly unlucky so far this season. 96 took a sweet revenge this past weekend by winning the North American Baie-des-Chaleurs Rally, Round 3 of the Canadian Rally Championship held in Gaspesia, Quebec.

Co-driven by Ontarian Brian Maxwell, L’Estage set a blazing pace from the word go. Driving a Hyundai Tiburon 4WD, L’Estage took the lead of the rally on Friday night, setting the fastest times on the dusty gravel roads. At the end of the first day of competition, he enjoyed an impressive one-minute gap over their pursuers!

On day two, Antoine L’Estage continued to push hard to maintain a comfortable lead over his rivals, mainly American Matthew Iorio and Quebecer Sylvain Erickson. At the finish, L’Estage of St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, PQ, finished first with a 57-second lead ahead of Iorio. This victory puts Estage back in hunt for the 2005 title.

By finishing in second place aboard his Subaru Impreza WRX, Iorio greatly impressed everyone, as this was his first participation to the Baie-des-Chaleurs Rally, an event known as one of the most competitive on the schedule. Iorio followed by Erickson (who was co-driven by his daughter Chloe) fought hard all event long. Finishing in third place may decide Erickson to compete in the next event, the Defi Ste-Agathe/Duhamel Rally.

Toronto, Ontario’s Peter Thomson, the winner of the opening two rounds of the season and point standings leader before the event started, drove his Group N Subaru Impreza to fourth place ahead of a trio of American competitors. Thomson is still first in the championship standings, 23 points ahead of John Cassidy.

Frederick Labrie finished 8th and the Sprongl brothers 10th, scoring a class victory and bringing home their showroom stock Suzuki Swift + in first place in the two-wheel drive division. In Group 2, Eric Lapointe (Honda Civic) and Alberta’s Gord Olsen (VW Golf) were both classified in first place.

The next round of the Canadian Rally Championship will be the Defi Ste-Agathe/Duhamel Rally held September 9 and 10. Information about this rally can be found at www.rallyedefi.com. The Canadian Rally Championship is now in its 49th year of running and information about the series and other rallies in Canada can be found at www.carsrally.ca.

OSCAAR: HANLEY MEASURES UP TO SUCCESS AT MOSPORT

The OSCAAR Outlaws roared into Mosport, Saturday July 2, on a hot, sunny afternoon, displaying just what makes them the fastest racing series in Ontario!

On the stopwatch during practice, it was obvious that the OSCAAR Outlaws were set to do battle on Mosport’s half-mile oval. According to the track’s radar gun, different Outlaw teams were caught speeding down the backstretch at an easy 110 mph throughout the night!

Jeff Hanley hit all the marks, scoring the maximum available points for the night. Two heat race wins, race leader for all 50 feature race laps and of course winning the feature, all reflect the domination of the #70 Outlaw last night. The 330 points gained moves Hanley up 7 spots to 8th in the standings.

The race for the lead was an exciting battle all evening with several Outlaw drivers trying to chase down the #70. Early on it was the #15 of Al Shepstone, who was definitely one of the fast teams of the night, and the #03 of Shane Maginnis who were giving chase. Both cars retired from the race early, Al Shepstone with motor problems and Shane Maginnis with break problems.

The familiar sight of Rob Clarke in the #49 Outlaw working his way up from 7th in the starting grid left everyone wondering whether Clarke would be the one to catch Hanley. Despite a couple of late race cautions that closed in the field, Hanley had the car to beat and pulled away from Clarke. The #49 took home 2nd place and a 15-point lead over the #61 of John Fletcher who finished the race in 3rd place.

The #54 Outlaw of Michel Beyore finished an impressive and strong fourth place, while OSCAAR’s Fast Eddie Rookie of the Year contender, Ed Bowlby, drove to a solid fifth place.

OSCAAR’s next event is at Peterborough Speedway on July 16th. Fans won’t want to miss this night of racing action; as the Outlaws use this event to test and tune for the 7th Annual Don Biederman 75 Lap Memorial Event, set to take place at Peterborough Speedway on September 3rd.
